We had been on Viking once before in China and loved the experience. The stops were great, the food was good, and the crew was extremely helpful. The cabin we had was clean and the cabin steward was attentive to our needs. The cruise director was a Hoot and gave us both informed about coming attractions but also sang like a bird. For us, food service is acceptable. We traveled with a picky eater which made dinners on board a problem some times. Breakfast was the best meal of the day because of the custom make eggs each morning. We traveled to Budapest for seven-days. We have excellent weather and even on our one bad rainy day, we were entertained by our tour guide with stories and enjoyed a great lunch. Arriving in Budapest at night was the highlight of the trip. The cruise director alerted the camera buffs to be ready for the run and return to our dock. Read Less

The entire staff was the best, always available if we had any questions, and able to help with anything. The food and wine were excellent, and we had great local guides on our outings. My adult daughter and I had a terrific time, and enjoyed every minute. We met some lovely people on board, and we both loved the smaller sized ship. Our cabin was perfect for us - but we really didn't spend much time there. We didn't partake of the entertainment, as after a leisurely dinner, we were ready to relax and get ready for the next day's adventure. Shore excursions were diverse and very interesting. We particularly loved the hike through the vineyard (with a wine tasting afterward, of course!), and our cooking class. We loved learning some of the history and sampling food and wine in the smaller towns along our route on the Rhone River. We are ready to go again! Read Less

I enjoyed the cruise very much. Even with the rioting in Paris, Viking kept everyone safe and comprimised with excursions to everyone’s satisfaction. Staff was wonderful,as was all the excursions they offered. The ceremony at Normandy Beach was very moving. I don’t have any negative comments to give about this cruise. The ports and all the sights were very enjoyable. The ship was very clean and laid out very well. The food served was excellent. The embarkation and disembarkation all was very smooth, and handled very well by the ship staff. I have sailed Viking before and have two additional cruises booked right now. I would very highly recommend Viking to anyone and everyone. I recommend both the river cruises as well as the ocean cruises. The service and ports of call are all well thought out and are offered at no cost in most instances, also the free WiFi and the beverages offered for no additional cost at meal times is a great plus. I absolutely would recommend Viking to anyone. This cruise was spectacular. We had the large cabin, not sure i would go that big again, you really don't spend that much time in your room so you really don't need it. Gia our cruise director was fantastic. The only problem that we had was we were supposed to get early access to our cabin but we were one of the last people to get their cabins. Also when we got to the airport we didn't have a viking rep to help us through the airport and our driver dropped us at the wrong place. The food was excellent the excursions were great. We did miss one of our ports because of the yellow jacket protests. We will most certainly do a viking again. Another thing that was really cool about this cruise was there was a bunch of different age groups. Read Less

We've received many Vikings brochures but never booked one. When the brochure for the Danube Waltz Cruise arrived we were fascinated; we'd long wanted to try a Vikings Cruise and this itinerary seemed perfect for us - and it was! We booked both the pre-excursion stay in Prague and the post-excursion stay in Budapest. We saw/did everything we possibly could during the 3 day stay in each city, immersed ourselves in their cultures, and fell in love with both of them. Our hotel in Prague, Art Nouveau Palace Hotel, is absolutely beautiful, in a fabulous central location and thus walkable to almost everything in Prague. The Vikings staff were with us from the time we got off the plane in Prague to the time we went through the Security as we left Budapest; the Vikings desks in each hotel were valuable resources. When we left Prague for the drive to Passau, a bus (one of 2) picked us up at the hotel for a 4 hour drive through the Czech and then the German country-sides and delivered us to Passau where we embarked the ship. The Hermod is a lovely ship, our cabin (109) was perfect and our cabin steward terrific. Food at every meal was delicious and beautifully presented and the wine excellent. The wait staff were professional, pro-active in taking our orders, and conscientious in making sure everything met our expectations. The entire ship's staff was excellent - knowledgeable, thoughtful, caring, always responsive to any questions/requests, with the added plus of great senses of humor. Program Director Lee was truly outstanding; he did a great job with the programming, he interacted superbly with the guests, and always was interested in our feedback on shore excursions as well as our experiences on board. His descriptions of the views during our scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley were wonderful. The evening we sailed into Budapest at 10:00 pm, Monday, July 2, he made sure everyone knew to be on deck to see the magnificent lights of this beautiful city. Truly, is was an incredibly spectacular sight that took our breaths away! Not to be missed! We found every port to be wonderful to have a chance to explore - to at least give us a taste of it, and the Vikings excursions we selected were all very good. We'd like to highlight a few that we especially treasured. Even in the rain, the Passau walking tour was very pretty and the organ concert in St. Stephen's Cathedral magnificent--to hear our wedding processional (Purcel's Trumpet Voluntary) played on that instrument was very moving. The scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley was incredibly lovely - and Lee's narration perfect without being intrusive. We thought the tour of the Wachau Valley Winery - the Morwald family's winery, was the best winery tour and tasting we have ever experienced! Our group was small, which made it more personable, our Vikings guide fun, Erhard personally gave us the tour and was an absolute delight, and the 6 delicious wines we tasted were served in crystal glasses with generous pours, along with baskets of fresh bread. We bought 4 bottles! We thoroughly enjoyed our Danube Waltz cruise. To put our experience in perspective, we have traveled extensively around the world and also have been on many ocean cruises including 2 transatlantics, a Mediterranean cruise, Alaskan, and many different Caribbean islands, and we're doing a Panama Canal cruise in March 2019. We would absolutely do another Vikings River cruise. But first, we actually booked (on board the ship) the British Isles Ocean Cruise for the spring of 2020 -- along with our dear friends with whom we were traveling. We are very much looking forward to that. Read Less

We enjoyed the different ports of call each day and the excursions. All of the excursions were conducted in English and very informative. In addition we signed up for additional excursions that were also very nice the transportation at each port was conducted with top notch transportation busses and we were very impressed we have been on several cruises on different cruise lines. The Viking river cruise boats were very nice and clean. We would definitely use Viking cruise line again. We met lots of people from all over and everyone was very nice. The entire crew were by far the nicest group of people and they made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We can’t think of anything that was a negative during the cruise. Read Less

Locations visited and length of cruise was perfect. The staff was exceptional, and the food was delicious and plentiful! The wait staff kept the wine glasses filled as requ at both lunch and dinner. Although we weren’t on the optional drink plan, the wine selections were very good. It was a very comfortable journey...not rushed, and we enjoyed the actual cruise alng the rivers. Seeing the scenery of vineyards, small villages, old castles, windmills and large cities lit up at night was an unexpected delight and it was glorious. On our last evening in Budapest, the captain took the boat out on the river to see the glorious lighting on all the buildings. It was beautiful! Because of the smaller size and fewer passengers, we had time to meet, chat with and relax at the lunches and dinners with other guests. We would sit with some several times at both lunch and dinner, as well as see them on the daily walking tours. We exchanged contact information with some of them. Read Less

Took the Viking Gullveig with friends. Loved the ports with local and informed tour guides. The Captain was outstanding, greeting the guests every time we boarded or left the ship. We were greeted at the airport, taken to the ship and taken care of like family. We were taken to the airport on our last day and were escorted through the airport to assure we got home safely. Bartenders knew our name and drink on the first day and were great! Servers went out of their way to be helpful and courtious: one example: we wee having coffee on the third deck where continental breakfast was served. As we were approaching a lock I sad to my wife" I would love to see this lock, but we need to go to the dining room for breakfast". This was overheard by a server at the continental buffet and asked what would you like from the dining room? We told her and she gracefully went to the dining room and brought breakfast to us.......OVER and ABOVE service. Can't say enough other than ...can't wait for our next Viking Cruise!! Read Less

End of season deal allowed us to experience a taste of Europe, while gaining our first experience of river cruising. From the cruise director, captain through the crew everybody went out of their way to ensure the best cruise experience ever. The shore excursions were very informative with enough time to explore on your own before returning to the boat. Learning about the local culture, food, and activities was very enlightening. The intimate environment of a couple of hundred passengers meant you got to know or recognize everyone very quickly. The meals were excellent with an offering of the local cuisine of the country we were visiting, and the open dining allowed for more opportunity to mingle and get to know a variety of shipmates. The cabins were very comfortable and functional, although we basically only slept and changed in the room. Post cruise we purchased train tickets to Prague, and the crew made sure we were disembarked in time to catch our train. Though we had pre booked a cruise this year, we have already booked our next years cruise with Viking to try an ocean vessel. Read Less

We chose Viking River Cruises because we had heard so many excellent things about them from previous customers. The date and cost of the cruise also fit into our plans. We have been on the larger cruise lines and liked them, but Viking is a totally different, positive experience and totally exceeded all expectations we had. The rooms were very nice, the heated floor in the bathroom was totally awesome, the amenities were top of the line and always replenished and on hand. The complimentary water provided in the rooms was also topped off sufficiently, sometimes more than once a day. Bottled water was provided as you disembarked the ship for excursions, as well as umbrellas when the weather was wet. Viking's manner of communication while on excursions, was nothing short of awesome -- they were called "quiet boxes" with earphones and each person had their own, which was charged in your room when not in use. The person leading the excursion would talk into their own quiet box and you could hear everything being said without being right next to the guide. The staff on our ship were beyond attentive and pleasant, the who while being professional. The food was geared to the town we were visiting and always appetizing and interesting. The towns and all the history were something I will always treasure and a great and unique experience. Read Less

Itinerary, love Viking, our 2nd river and one ocean Montreal to NYC, wonderful. Highly recommend to everyone. Service is perfect, tours are well planned and interesting. The only point of disappointment was the 2 times we were parked between 2 other Viking ships, no light in the rooms, couldn't use the balcony; the entire ship was dark. Tour manager was very knowledgable, loved the expert lectures on board. Food was always delicious and appealing. Service everywhere was perfect, always attentive, aware of what guests needed, swift and friendly ....in just the right amount. Room was kept very clean, service was perfect; asked once and they consistently provided what we needed without reminders. Front desk very helpful anytime we had a question. Especially helpful when we had to disembark at 3:30 am! Staff was out there, attentive and effecient. We had rainy weather, however, tours continued, can't control the weather. Thank you! Read Less

Great crew and Magnificent food and excursions that were some of the best we have seen. We could not have been happier. I would recommend Viking River cruise anytime. The region is outstanding as you see all the Castles and the small towns. such a feeling to be with the locals. Looking forward to takin other Viking cruises to destinations that I have not been to. The cook on the ship was unique in his delivery of the dishes and made you feel you were eating what the locals eat, but presented in an fancy way. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We had hoped to see the Rhine-Meine Canal as we transited it but due to the low water we were unable to transit that section. The ship change was handled very smoothly by the staff and crew. We attended at least one excursion at each port so we had a good overview of the entire area, the excursions were well run. Occasionally we got a guide that was a bit hard to understand but for the most part that wasn't a problem. The process of getting people off the ship and to the designated locations for their excursions was handled in a very smooth fashion. The seemingly impromptu evening cruise of the lights of Budapest the last evening was one of the highlights! We truly enjoyed the time cruising through the scenic countryside and would have enjoyed a little more of that. Our cabin was spacious, comfortable and well appointed and the Service was impeccable. We enjoyed the flexibility of open seating and the opportunity to get to know many of the other passengers by sharing a table with different people throughout much of the cruise. It was a fabulous experience and we will definitely take another Viking Cruise. Read Less

We wanted to experience Europe and with starting in Amsterdam then finishing in Budapest, Viking River Cruises seem the best way to enjoy the trip at our age. The itinerary with all the included tours gave us exactly what we wanted. I enjoyed the castles, the small towns, the history from whatever you want to believe to the present, the tour guides selected by Viking were knowledgeable, entertaining, and gave a good presentation of their local city/town. We did not eat off the Baldur as the meals were superior, plus well prepared, dining staff pleasant with your every request fulfilled with competence and humor. Viking River Cruise has to be complimented on their staff hiring, the personnel was pleasant, efficient, thus resulting in a memorable wonderful experience. The weather co-operated as we enjoyed beautifully days with only one day of light showers. Going under those low bridges, the up then down of the locks, all interesting for first-time river cruisers, then the seemingly endless vineyards, all made the cruise exceptional. Thank you. The food was simply the best, and the chef was good at fulfilling special requests. Complimentary wine/beer with each meal was appreciated. River cruises are a very good way to travel. You see a lot more that if you were in a coach. The choice of day stops was good. There was a variety of venues, each different and very interesting. We had heard good reports of Viking and found that our trip was first rate. Our fellow passengers were British, American and Australian which made for some very interesting conversations over Dinner or in the lounge. We could not fault the staff. I had the misfortune of slipping in a restaurant in Coimbra cutting my head and spraining an ankle. The Viking staff were wonderful. One of the staff came with my husband and me to the local hospital so I could be checked over and she was a great help in translating and sorting things out. I was able to rejoin the ship and we continued our trip. The hotel (ship) manager found me a walking stick so I was able to get around but all the staff were so kind to me. We enjoyed every meal on board so full marks to the chef and his team. The waiting staff were also very efficient. Our cabin was kept very clean.I am sure that as the staff were all Portuguese they took a pride in their work and in their country. Both my husband and I are Hotel School trained and have lectured in Catering Colleges so if anything we are more critical but in this case the whole package was very good. The included trips were most interesting and enjoyable.. The hotel we stayed at in Lisbon (Lisboa Tivoli) was central and very comfortable and we enjoyed a lovely Dinner and Fado in the top floor restaurant overlooking the town. Overall the whole trip was well planned and thought out. We will travel with Viking again of that there is no doubt. Read Less

A friend of mine was taking this cruise with his wife and suggested my wife and I join them. It was a last minute decision on our part but was on our list of things to do....it turned out to be one of the best cruises we ever took (first river cruise). Viking was excellent and we are surely going to do another one. Since this was our first River cruise it was really exciting for us. We loved the continually changing scenery and the ability of getting off the boat at different towns and mixiting it up with the locals. We thought the included tours were excellent. After being on multiple ocean cruises, the only thing we noted was there didn't seem to be much security as when getting on and off of an ocean cruise. I assume it's there but it wasn't as obvious to us as it is with an ocean cruise. Read Less

Viiking let us know and offered alternatives as well as compensation. We went and were so glad we did. At one point we had to leave the Astrid and be moved to a sister ship at the point where the water was too low. All we had to do was pack. The staff took care of everything else. Even the captain was helping to move us. When we got the the other ship which was exactly like the Astrid everything was exactly in place. Very impressive. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. We had toured parts of Europe on or own before and thought a cruise would provide a convenient lodging structure that would allowed us to spend time in various cities without searching for hotels and the flexibility to participate in group excusions or to go our own way. The Viking Cruise was perfect. We spent six days and nights prior to the cruise in the Netherlands and Belgium befoe boarding the Alruna and embarking from Amsterdam. At the conclusion of the tour in Basel Switzerland, we added another week to tour Switzerland on our own. We were very impressed with the ship. It was like being in a very upscale hotel. Service was outstanding, the room, while small, was plenty spacious, well appointed and very comfortable. It actually lived larger than I expected. This was partially because the rest of the ship was so available and comfortable at any hour as lounge, lobby, restaurant, observation platform, bar, library, etc. Food was very good, entertainment fine. Cruising the middle Rhine while on the upper deck was all that it is cracked up to be and offered amazing views and an excellent informative narrative. Shore excursions kept us busy, entertained, and educated but there was plenty of time for us to explore on our own. I have to say that our Activities Director, Alex was a highlight of the trip. His tours, and programs are simply outstandking! His contributions especially were educational but presented with great humor, and knowledge. He not only informed but entertained us. It was a joy to benefit from and watch such an accomplished professional at his craft. We really can't imagine what a cruise line could do to top the experience we had with Viking and we will go again. Read Less

The food aboard ship was outstanding. After a tour of the kitchen area, I don't know how such fine meals were produced in such a small space. Each night in the lounge we enjoyed games, entertainment and one night there was a glass blowing demonstration. I cannot say enough about the crew. They were all so accommodating, friendly and fun and I cannot say enough about our cabin steward, Novak---such a pleasant young man who kept our cabin in order in such a short amount of time.
