Oh, no - cruise was slated for an Amsterdam-Budapest voyage. Had to be rerouted to Rotterdam as a sailing event that takes place every year in Amsterdam consumed all mooring spaces. Something the cruise line failed to let anyone know at the time of booking. A coach trip was not anything we had signed up for - thus, why we choose cruising. On arrival a mediocre dinner was served, which began two weeks of the best meals being purchased off the ship. Quite a disappointment. To compound, the food quality, was the attitude of servers. Seemed most irritated that we were there most of the time. Very regimented, if you asked for 1 egg in morning, you were told, "only do 2 egg orders". Coffee was slow in coming with regularity, so asked for a carafe of coffee for table, told "we don't do that, we serve". Of course, that was only every 15 min or so they "served". Which you would have to find them or flag them down. In there defense, I would say they were understaffed. Cabins were kept clean, wonderful hot water and pressure. No complaints. Beds on the other had were miserable. When stated after first night that we were uncomfortable, were told "all beds on ship the same, nothing can be done". I pointed out their 24 satisfaction policy, and the "hotel manager" said "well it is because the ship is new and the mattresses are not broke in",surely they did not buy the mattresses with that in mind. I suggested they put 4 duvets across our bed with sheet on top, they did and it was better, never really comfortable. One reason being they only have linens in twin for bed, even though it is a king size variation. So every night we got caught up in the sheets, my husband said it was like camping. Not something you would expect in "luxury" cruising. Two of the things I love about cruising - good food and a comfortable bed. Never been disappointed before. This cruise was not the best. Europe, though, is still beautiful and we loved that. Read Less

We were supposed to board at Amsterdam to Budapest and instead we ended in Rotterdam because of some tall ships celebration at Amsterdam. We were not aware of the low river water level until we arrived and boarded a sister ship instead. We were told half way of the cruise we would meet up with our original ship where we would be transferred into. The service and activities were excellent. The ports and shore excursions exceeded our expectation where some inconveniences such as unable to dock at certain port were bus there and compensated with extra activities. The dining and entertainment aboard the ship were excellent. Disembarkation at the final destination to the airport with transportation provided went real smooth. We had a great time on the cruise and enjoy every part of it plus the staff were the BEST ! Read Less

We were told that we would not be sailing from Amsterdam due to a congested harbor, we sailed from Rotterdam. We were met at the airport by a very nice young man from Viking and put aboard a bus to Rotterdam. We were the only ones on the bus. This change was no problem. We were also told several days ahead that the water level on the Danube was low, not the fault of Viking and we might have to change boats with a Viking boat that could not get down river. This we did and our tour director came with us. We packed before a shore trip and our bags were in our room on the new boat when we arrived. Viking even went so far as to give us the same room number, do not remember the name of the new boat The same problem faced us below Budapest so Viking took us to Budapest on a tour bus.To make up for the inconvence we were taken to lunch at the four star Gundel Restaurant . The food was out of this world and the chocolate crape, WOW. Viking did every thing they could to make our trip great. The service on the boats was great and also the food. We learned to make a strudel on the second boat. I have made it twice sense we have been home. All in all we had a great time and could not have been more pleased. All the shore trips we took were fun and we learned a great deal about that part of the world. I am a WW2 student and the WW2 trip to Nuremberg to the Zepplin field and the Court House where the War Trials took place, took care of two items on my bucket list. The highlight of the trip was the concert in Vienna. This was another item off my bucket list to hear the BLUE DANUBE WALTZ played in Vienna. You need to schedule 2 days there please. Great trip. Ready to schedule our third one. Read Less

A long-time travel buddy and I traveled with Viking River Cruises on the Rhine Getaway.First, we spent 3 nights in Bruges, Belgium, at the Duke's Palace, a hotel that Viking chose for us. And it was wonderful! In addition to the good food and central location, I especially loved the old elevator.Touring the city was on our own with suggestions and maps from a Viking representative. Favorite restaurant? The 't Vagevuur. A change in plans because of a water event in Amsterdam caused us to embark in Rotterdam, and Viking bused us there with no inconvenience. (We had been to Amsterdam and seen the sights on a previous trip.) Our ship was the Viking Eir. Oh gosh, I love these new ships! The Eir was modern, airy, sleek, comfortable, bright, and passenger friendly. The food was delicious: fresh and tasty. Favorite stops included Kinderdijk, Marksburg Castle and Strasburg. We took excursions at every stop, either the included one or a for-fee one. They were all very good: interesting and educational, especially because the guides were very knowledgeable. I attended each session that told of the next port of call and the sights we would see. I like that Viking did that in large groups and didn't just tell us via intercom or newsletter. (Yes, I am a former educator who likes to learn about the places I visit.) This was a very relaxing reip along the scenic Rhine River. It was a wonderful trip, and I liked the ship, our cabin, the food, the service, the itinerary and shore excursions. I would recommend this trip to someone who wanted to try a European river cruise, especially a Viking river cruise, for the first time. Those who love big ships with their excitement and beach destinations should continue with those cruises. Otherwise, I recommend this Viking river Cruise "Rhine Getaway" to you. I will take more Viking cruises, both river and ocean, because they just do a wonderful job. Read Less

My husband and I travel often, however, this was our first Viking Cruise. It will definitely not be our last. Everything about this cruise was top notch. Crew members were amazing They were always pleasant and went out of their way to accommodate any reasonable requests made by any of the guests. They also did a great job of handling the the unreasonable complaints made by guests.[One person complained of no balcony after booking a room with no balcony!?] The Longship was kept spotless. Our house keeper did a fabulous job of restocking and being sure that everything in our cabin was perfect. Food was tasty and plentiful. The kitchen staff did any and everything possible to be sure to meet each passengers' specific needs. Tours were very good. I'm not a "group tour" person, so did some exploring on my own. Sites we visited were outstanding. Each evening before dinner guests were given a briefing of the following day's activities. A "newspaper"describing the following day's activities was also left in each stateroom. We were well informed of what to expect. The ship's lounge was the gathering place for the briefings and most on board activities. The on board activities were varied and always fun and/or informative. One of my favorites was the Glassblower from Bamberg. We joined folks in the lounge daily for Happy Hour and again after dinner for either scheduled entertainment or to listen to the wonderful piano playing of Nikoli. We opted to do an extra 2 nights in Budapest at the end of our cruise. The hotel was fabulous. Our room had a view of Fishermen's Bastion and the Danube. We were fortunate to have a wedding take place on the bastion that we watched from our room. Be sure to try the paprikash in Budapest! All in all I would highly recommend this Viking cruise and am looking forward to doing another within the next two years. Read Less
