Compared to our previous Viking river cruise, this one was a disappointment -- primarily because the cruise portion was too short. Cruise director Jamie and the ship personnel were great, as were the cabin and the meals. We enjoyed our day and a half in Berlin, both the included tour and particularly the "A Taste of Berlin" optional. Highlights on the cruise itself were Worlitz, Wittenberg (with its focus on Martin Luther, the Reformation and the art of Lucas Cranach), Dresden and its rebuilt palaces and churches, the Green Vault and the porcelain museum, the walk throughTorgau and the hike to the Bastei. Meissen was a good shopping opportunity. Prague was a disappointment -- too many fellow tourists and a hotel that was too far from the center of the city. The Polish extension had a great tour guide, a fascinating city in Krakow (and a great hotel location), and an underwhelming Warsaw. And two long bus rides. Read Less

The cabins were very nice and comfortable. The food and dinning staff was very good. Having wine and beer with lunch and dinner was great. We enjoyed the different ports of call each day and the excursions. All of the excursions were conducted in English and very informative. In addition we signed up for additional excursions that were also very nice the transportation at each port was conducted with top notch transportation busses and we were very impressed we have been on several cruises on different cruise lines. The Viking river cruise boats were very nice and clean. We would definitely use Viking cruise line again. We met lots of people from all over and everyone was very nice. The entire crew were by far the nicest group of people and they made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We can’t think of anything that was a negative during the cruise. Read Less

Going on a river cruise was just a dream that my husband and I shared. We had been on more than a half dozen ocean cruises and looked forward to this new experience. I loved having the excursions as well as drinks included in our price. I enjoyed getting to know the other passengers and was really able to get to know many with such a small number of passengers. I really liked being welcomed up in the wheelhouse at anytime to ask questions and learn about the ship. We had a group of ten that traveled together and we were always able to sit together and when a few of us wanted massages, the crew set up appointments as well as figured out transportation for us as well. Cabins were very clean and we still talk about how luxurious the towels were. Service and food was wonderful with lots of attentiveness. Already on my radar is going up the St Lawrence in Canada as well as a Scandinavian cruise. Read Less

When my daughter and I arrived we were pleased with the organization and smoothness of our embarkation with Viking Cruise. Previous reviews and especially the agent we contacted for the Rhine River Cruise offered by Viking Cruises was very helpful and sincere. We trusted his sincerity in the company, believed, and booked. The dinning atmosphere and foods were relaxing and enjoyable. The Alruna shipcrew and Captain made this cruise very memorable and would do again. The timing and cost of this cruise ideally coincided with our travel plans. The crew, especially the staff were helpful and accommodating. All of our added excursions were insightful in understanding the history and culture of this area. If you appreciate World War II; the Audie Murhpy Memorial is a must. Activities and enthusiasm of the Alruna staff and crew was contagious. My family and I would - if time and monies allow - do again. Read Less

After a lot of ocean cruises, we were ready for something different and more interesting. Viking lived up to all the good reviews we had read. From reservations and pre-cruise support to air and hotel arrangements, embarkation, cruising and shore excursions everyone was highly organized and very friendly. Our Main Deck cabin was small but pleasant, with small windows at water level, about 5 feet above the floor. Most of the cruising was at night, and in port we often moored alongside other ships, so the value of higher level cabins seems limited, except maybe avoiding noise of passages through locks- which happened 67 times on this route. We liked the food, the shore excursions were mosty very interesting, and we got a lot of walking, sometimes 2 to 5 miles a day depending on time in port. The cruise director and staff were very good, and we liked the fresh Scandanavian decor. Hotels, transfers, and air tickets were all perfectly handled. On this cruise 90 percent of passengers were retired Americans in 60s and 70s, mostly well traveled and intelligent. There were no children and no facilites for them. The ships are well organized but there is no gym or fitness space and rhe “sun deck” cannot be used at all except on the Danube due to low bridges. Free wifi was a plus but as they note often very slow. Anyone with disabilities should not do this, unlike ocean cruising the ship has narrow corridors and tight rooms and requires use of stairs and steeply sloping gangplanks, and German cobblestone- paved towns require a lot of walking and stairs; buses have steep steps and narrow aises and are not acceptable. Even large cities have little or no accommodations for the disabled. The headsets provided for shore excursions were very helpful. In short, this is very enjoyable for older adults who can get around, but I think most chidren or teens would be bored. We were sorry to leave after te cruise and we are certainly looking forward to another Viking cruise. Read Less

The fifteen(15) day Grand European Tour exceeded our expectations! The ship was beautiful and extremely accommodating. Our veranda stateroom was very nice and had everything we needed to be comfortable while enjoying the beautiful scenery as we sailed the rivers. However, the most amazing part of the cruise was the cuisine. Chef Jakub and his staff presented wonderful meals that depicted the culture and essence of the people we visited. We had the opportunity to join Chef on a visit to Vienna's famous Naschmarket and it was a dream come true. We walked through the market tasting the delicious wines, cheeses and other delicacies as Chef Jakub explained to us the awesome qualities of the white asparagus he intended to prepare for dinner. What an unbelievable adventure! Another outstanding aspect of the trip was how well Caitlyn and her team organized the daily tours, entertainment and activities. Not only were the lectures educational but they were entertaining and chalked full of attention getting antics. I learned more about this part of the world in fifteen(15) days than I had previously learned my entire life. The excursions, entertainment and lectures were top of the line! Finally, the service from the entire crew was incredible! My husband and I felt as though we were royalty being catered to throughout the trip. Thank you Viking Team for a fantastic travel experience and we will definitely be joining you again soon! Read Less

* Very impressed with personal journey booklet, all details if we were needed, which were perfect because our flight were delayed. * Our cabin was always very clean and the cruise service were polite. * I am impressed with cruise director information daily, our cruise director always working above our expectation. * Included tours and optional tours are great. Transfers were excellent. * I did not drink wine or soft drink except for water, which is fine with me. However, we did not like dinner food, main courses, most of the time. Breakfasts were great. * We could not invite any family members and friends because they did not like the idea of paying for full price a year in advance, or when booking. * We like the idea of switching to different groups, which given cruisers a chance to get to know people from different countries. Sometimes it might turn out that people are from you home town/ state. * We are physically active, unfortunately walking desk was closed due to the weather. However, we enjoy the music and dancing at night instead for our physically work out. Read Less

We started getting treated very well from the moment we checked our bags. We didn't have to touch them till we got on the Idi. We were cruising for the first time together and without our children for the first time also. The ship was large but intimate. The ship was clean, quiet, and the trip up the river was very smooth. Our cabin felt huge. and it had a massive bed that was very comfortable. We had the pleasure of having a Veranda suite, right on the river level. It was spectacular. I enjoyed seeing swans and ducks most mornings. Every inch of the Idi was well cared for and that care was reflected in the care that the crew extended to its passengers as well. Our cabin was attended to at least twice a day by our steward Petra. She always had a smile on her face, as did every person we encountered working on the ship. Every meal we ate was a feast of the local cuisine. Dinner was local specialties but breakfast was everything you could think of. Dimitri (our chef) paid very close attention to our food allergies and every meal was vetted to make sure they were safe. Our servers Igor and Bogdan were exceptionally nice. We had a great deal of fun going on the tours during the day and at night the staff including Arturo and Vicki were so entertaining. Vicki detailed all the activities that were to follow in the morning and Arturo made sure everyone got bottles of water and a smile before the tours. The tour buses were so plush and very clean. We got to see castles and the stories that went with them. Windmills and what they did. Shopping and bicycle's, canals and castles, chocolate, interesting street markets. Vicki even helped us rent a car to go see my old unit where I was stationed when I lived there. We hit the markets at every port and loved it. We also had a wonderful time meeting all the different people on the Idi. We were among the younger bunch but everyone was so friendly and kind. I felt like I had a hundred friends who were all enjoying this fantastic voyage with us and it was all the better for it. Our tour guides were a variety of characters. Our favorites were Vicki from the Idi, Vicki with the hat, and the best was Rocko in Cologne. He was so funny and irreverent. A true comedian . The cruise was a relaxed special time to recharge and relax. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. We met people from Korea, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia and so many other places too numerous to recount. We met so many delightful and varied persons it was so sweet. I hope to take another river cruise on the Idi and many other Viking river ships in the future. I miss my friends on the crew and every soul we traveled with. It was awesome!!! Read Less

I enjoyed this trip very much, the cabinet, the beautiful variety food, the nice service that made us feel at home. we were deeply impressed. we are waiting to plan the 2nd visit. I have just reviewed my diary of "my Viking River Cruise on May 11, 2016 to May 31" it says, "it was the most enjoyable cruise I have ever went in all these 12 years .... " my advice - continue to keep the excellent work! I was impressed. things need to improve - the only thing that needs to improve is the evening entertainment. i think, Viking may add more musical entertainments after dinner time because every night was piano and singing would become kind of boring after few days on the ship. therefore, I would like to suggest the following idea - have a DJ or some one who works on ship to invite customers to stand out to tell jokes, stories of funny experiences, play bingo, play cards, set prize for the winner. a little prize may bring up the atmosphere, may create more fun! I understand today everything costs money, but with our smart brain, I am sure Viking would be glad to try to give customers the most satisfactory cruise every time they cometo visit. All The Best! We had a spacious balcony where we could sit and enjoy the passing scenery. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food and wine was amazing. The trips into port were always fun and informative with local tour guides. The only thing we lacked were bicycles but next time we will rent them in port. We started our trip in LePec, a suburb of Paris adjacent to the very historic town of St. Germaine-en-laye. We sailed from Paris to Normandy with stops in Rouen to see the great cathedral, Monet's house and gardens at Giverny and several other ports of call in historic and charming towns along the Seine. We also had a wonderful day in Paris. The highlight was a day spent at the Normandy beaches including a walk through the American cemetery and World War II museum. Read Less

We choose this cruise since a went from Budapest to Amsterdam, and some friends were doing the same cruise. We embarked on time and when we got to Amsterdam there were not problems with disembarkation. The ship, cabin, dinning, entertainment, service and shore excursions. were just great. The shore excursions provided a lot of walking so for those who want to get a lot of exercise this is a good way to go. All the staff and crew were very friendly and extremely helpful. Both my wife and I have traveled for years in numerous countries and this is by far the most stress free trip we ever took. We are looking forward to another river cruise in the future and would definitely choose Viking if they were available in the area we were traveling. I don't know what more to add. We booked the two day stay in Budapest before the cruise and that was also excellent. The breakfast buffet in the morning at the hotel was really good and the Viking personnel at the hotel was great at suggestion places to eat, setting up tours and general information. Viking is absolutely the top of the line if you want a great cruise. Read Less

We loved the crew, from the cabin help to the chefs. The shore excursions very well planed informative. The food was amazing along with the servers. We purchased the upgrade drink ticket which aloud us great wine and the brand liquor we enjoy. One thing that made this trip for us, was that there no children it was a total adult trip. We have told everyone we know about our trip and how much we loved it and would experience it again and again. We arrived in Amsterdam 2 days eary so we could experience the area. The crew, when it was time was there at our hotel to take us to our ship. It was a great beginning to the trip. Read Less

We arrived in Amsterdam very early in the morning as we had an overnight flight. Our Viking Cruise host met us while we were waiting for our luggage to come off the plane. We were then shuttled to our ship aboard a coach bus and given cold water immediately. It was a nice way to start. When we arrived at our ship, the staterooms weren't ready yet but we were encouraged to go to the dining room and enjoy a hot breakfast as service was still ongoing. Another fantastic way to start our trip. We did take advantage of the shuttle bus that took us to the center of Amsterdam so we could explore a bit. Unfortunately many of the museums were closed and the Anne Frank house was completely sold out but we took a wonderful canal cruise and saw many of the sights. The weather was a bit chillier than I thought it would be at that time of the year so we didn't spend any time on the sundeck but the Aquavita Terrace was wonderful! And on the one day that we were hit by rain while on an excursion, the ship's kitchen staff met us with hot chocolate and rum! YUMMY!!! The food was excellent! I loved that we had the choice of either a more 'informal' meal on the terrace or a more formal meal in the dining room for lunch and dinner. Even for breakfast there were many many choices from the to die for buffet to the order from the menu options. If you just wanted muffins, coffee, and cereal there were those options also! The bar staff was extremely friendly!! My husband and I looked forward to going to the lounge whenever possible because it was so welcoming! Ships staff weren't afraid to interact with us and it made it seem like we were cruising with family. Our cabin steward was fantastic! He entertained us with towel animals and fresh fruit each day! The ports are wonderful and the shore excursions are very interesting but bring your walking shoes!!! Walk before you go on the trip to get ready for the walking you will do. Many areas are accessible only on foot and sometimes the ship has to dock a decent hike from the main entrance to town. You will definitely get your exercise! We did extend our trip into Lucern Switzerland and I can't say that I would recommend that portion of the trip. Our hotel was again a distance from the city center and having to walk for everything was not the way I really wanted to end my trip. But my husband and I are looking forward to going on another excursion with Viking. We just know what we want to do more than we did for the first trip. Read Less

A small river boat from Budapest to Amsterdam. City tours every day, river cruise every night. Incredible staff, better food, and luxurious accommodations. I got an understanding of the history or the river valleys, the castles, the monasteries, the Prince Bishops and the stages of the agriculture, the wars, the religions, and economies over 2000 years. Detail: Embarkation and debarkation - The crew took care of everything. All we had to do was walk on board. Ship: 200 staterooms, three dining areas, rooftop lounge and walking track. Dining: Three gourmet meals a day, each spread over a wide time band, running into each other. Snacks and coffee/tea all the time. Often the lunches and dinners were themed, with excellent food based on where we were travelling. Local wines in abundance. Just when I was wondering how they could improved as the trip had five days to go, they went all out for a series of incredible meals. Entertainment and activities - Onboard, music and culture, electronically showing pictures reliving the day. Offboard, several trips every day with varying levels of effort, showing the best each city or region had to offer. Service - Sublime, personal, from new friends. Ports and excursions - We hit all the big cities, castles and monasteries, with great local guides pointing out their favorite points and the importance of what had happened. Also remember a trip to a family vineyard and wine bottling and selling operation, excellent in-town food, souvenirs and just time to ramble in town, waving to the ship staff going the other way in a small alley. We are already planning another viking cruise or two, probably Portugal and the Baltic Read Less
