We chose this cruise for the tour down the Danube. Our first river cruiswe and we were thrilled. We met wonderful people and the staff was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The cruise itself was so fun and picturesque. We really enjoyed the tours and learned so much about the history and culture of the cities and tours. We started 2 days ahead in Prague and then went to Passau, Germany to start our cruise. So many places to see! The ship was clean and the cabin, although small was very organized and you had room to unpack and put your suitcase under the bed. The ports were fun and the excursions we chose were enjoyed! Panoramic tours of the cities: a wine tasting in Austria, bread making at a farm in Linz, A market tour with our chef in Vienna, A Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna. We would have loved to stay in Brataslava to enjoy the Slovakian food but sadly we were there just a half day. Such beautiful cities and towns. We loved them all - Budapest is very interesting and beautiful. We arrived at night and saw the beautiful parliament building all lit up looking gold with a full moon shining also. Very impressive. I think people with mobility issues would find this trip a challenge. Lots of walking and cobblestone streets in these centuries old cities. The food was delicious with many choices and fare from the areas we toured, The piano player at night was great. Someone complained in a previous comment - we enjoyed him. Read Less

I very much enjoyed this cruise because of the ship and it’s excellent crew. The cabin was clean and neat with great housekeeping staff. Food choices were often a bit overwhelming during dinner. Breakfast and lunch were very good also. The wait staff in the lounge was very efficient and friendly. The staff often remembered my preference of beverage. My only dislike were the size of crowds at various venues that we visited. The alternative choice of smaller groups with less famous attractions would be nice. Maybe not famous, but still interesting. More wineries, night time pub crawls, even old artisanry professions. Leather working, wood working. Even boat building. More bike touring. I will cruise with Viking again. The cabin was much nicer than the Corinthians hotel in Prague. That hotel had poor service and terribly prepared breakfast entrees. Poor facilities in the hotel room....eg. Only one luggage easel for four suitcases. No drawers for clothing. Bathtub was a waiting lawsuit for safety. Handicap bars in wrong positions and bathtub bottom was different elevation than the floor. Poorly designed room facilities wound up injuring one of my toes to the extent that I could not participate in walking tours for the remainder of the trip because shoes with closed toes would not be possible to wear. Lucky to have brought a pair of Hawaiian flip flops to hobble around in. Bare skin on long haul aircraft for return flight to my home in Hawaii. Thanks for spoiling me on the boat. I will never go to that hotel in Prague again. I mean never!. Read Less

This one-week cruise was excellent. The Sigrun was first put into service in March 2019. We booked this as a once in a lifetime trip and now we can’t wait to book another one. Viking sets the standard for river cruising in Europe. The staff, food, staterooms, and daily shore excursion exceeded all of our high expectations. It starts with the staff. They are extremely friendly and very responsive. They pleasantly greet every passenger every time they pass one around the ship. The restaurant and bar staff learned our names and preferred beverages within a day. There are many four- and five-star hotels in the U.S. and Europe that could learn the “Viking method” for treatment and accommodation of guests. We felt pampered every day aboard the ship. The staterooms may seem small, but they are marvels of design and functionality. The food was simply sensational. Each day’s menu included one page of regional entrees and another page of standard food. The head chef stopped by our table most evenings to chat and answer questions. The program director was very accommodating and informative. The lounge had different post-dinner activities most evenings. Every evening, we found a four-page newsletter in our room discussing the included and optional shore excursions for the next day. Viking has high standards for the local guides that lead the shore excursions and every one of these met or exceeded expectations. They all provided local insights and had great senses of humor. A highlight was visit to the ship’s bridge with the captain. There may be other river cruises in Europe, but none are better than Viking. Read Less

We embarked at Budapest onto the Viking La Var. From the moment we were met at the airport, in Budapest, until we alighted at Nuremberg the Viking crews saw to every fine detail. Accommodation was perfect as was the service on & off board. George, the entertainments & events manager was outstanding, and I am sure the boat could not run without him. All the tours, free and paid for, were arranged down to last detail, with amazing tour guides, who were very knowledgeable and spoke perfect English. Food was excellent with a choice of 3 menus for lunch & dinner... a regular, a local & a Chef's menu... we were spoilt for choice. Service at the table was faultless, with attentive, helpful, friendly waiters. All in all a very pleasant, interesting, historic trip Would definitely travel with Viking again and would recommend it to future travellers for a really nice experience Read Less

The beauty and the history was the leading factor. I chose Viking because of the stellar reviews. The food was not as elegant as I expected. I probably was looking for more of richness of the French since we did sail on a river in France. The wines were all in good taste and I did enjoy trying a new one with dinner each evening. The on shore excursions were great. The towns visited were extremely welcoming, clean and full of history. I do think that there should be more on ship choices in the evening. The local entertainment was great, but more movie choices in the passenger rooms would have been good. Although it may not be entirely possible, internet service was spotty. It would seem that there would be better internet service even while sailing since it is in inland waters. Overall, I would choose Viking and sail with you all again. The staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating. The small personal "I wish" list is small and overall the experience was wonderful. Thank you Read Less

It was our 50th anniversary and wanted to do something special. From the moment I called Viking's travel agent, Esteban, things went smoothly. He patiently answered all my questions and set up the trip. The flights went well and we were picked up and taken to the ship, where we were warmly welcomed. There was a delicious lunch waiting for us and we nearly instantly started getting acquainted with both staff and passengers. Our cabin was very clean and comfortable. Our dining options were delicious and well presented and served. Evening activities often consisted of an excellent piano player as well as local entertainment and an very entertaining bar tender!. The cruise director, Victoria, was wonderful. She was a wealth of knowledge and so helpful answering questions. The food was great and the staff was very attentive. The included as well as our two extra excursions were wonderful...very well organized but also with some flexibility. We really liked the small boat experience and the relaxed pace. We had the opportunity to make many friends on the trip and are looking forward to our next Viking adventure soon! Read Less

Have been ocean cruising for a few years now and thought we would give river cruising a try. We saw Jane Mcdonald on a Danube river cruise, liked the itinery, so started looking around. Viking seemed to get a lot of excellent reviews, nothing negative that we could find, so we booked with them. First off, they posted a nice personalised brochure to us. I logged onto their website and reserved our trips-don't worry if you forget this, you are automatically reserved on each of the included excursions and can change these at anytime, even on board. The meet up with the Viking rep at the airport and coach trip to the ship is very smooth.Once on the coach you won't touch your luggage again until its delivered to your cabin. On arrival we were shown around the ship and our cabin, and (depending on the time you arrive) were directed to a wine and cheese tasting event to get things going. The cabin was bigger than I expected, at least the same as on ocean cruises. Spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Bottled water every day. Food was very good. Great choices with local variations at each port. Wine and beer included with every lunch and dinner. Waiters are mainly Philippino, very cheerful and clearly enjoy working for Viking. Nothing is too much trouble. Entertainment is obviously different to on an ocean cruise but the singers, musicians, and Tim our entertainment Director, are of very good quality and perfect for a ship of this size. Be prepared to join in, it makes for a great evening. Tim must eat Duracell batteries for breakfast, he's a human dynamo. The excursions are excellent, they run so smoothly and are fabulous. Water bottles are handed out as you leave the ship, so no getting dehydrated. No photographer on board (hooray! ), no sales pitches,no gym, a small onboard shop for those who collect memorabilia. Basically, what you pay for the cruise is virtually all you need to budget for, no nasty surprises. And no children on board! We are definitely using Viking again, we only need to decide where to go! This trip was for our anniversary that we were not sure we would make as my husband has cancer. This was also our first River Cruises. We so happy with not only the service and the accommodation but more than anything the Crew. The Program Director Candi and her team were fantastic everything from the organization of the excursion to the entertainment. The shore excursions, we great and the knowledge that was shared by the local guides was so helpful in understanding the local culture. The entertainment on board was also perfect. This was truly a trip of a lifetime. They truly made us feel welcome and like were part of the family. We are already thinking about another trip, I can only hope that it will be just as wonderful. Thank you, Viking, for a wonderful vacation. Thank you again for a wonderful trip and we hope to see you again. Read Less

This was our first river cruise so we asked friends for their recommendation. They had no hesitation in recommending Viking and particularly the river Douro. We departed Manchester on a KLM flight, changing at Amsterdam then onward to Lisbon. The flights were comfortable and kept to the scheduled times. On arrival in Lisbon we were welcomed at the airport by the Viking representative who escorted us to the Viking coach for transfer to our hotel. We stayed 2 nights at the sumptuous Tivoli Hotel and , during our stay enjoyed a most informative conducted coach tour of Lisbon and the surrounding area. Following our stay in Lisbon, we traveled by coach to Porto where we were welcomed on board the "Osfrid" and ushered to our individual staterooms. The whole process of embarkation and disembarkation was handled with great care, Viking staff helping and guiding at every point. Our Journey took us up the river Douro, calling at vineyards, castles, places of worship, places of learning and all within a very informative and interesting environment. The guides were very experienced and knowledgeable. In addition to the inclusive excursions it was also possible to book additional ones to other places of interest, however, we never felt the need as the inclusive coach excursions proved to be more than enough to keep us occupied during the entire holiday. Our cruise took us toward the border with spain. We boarded our coach which crossed into spain to the stunning city of Salamanca. A city steeped in culture, history and with lots of interesting places to explore. A real gem. This being our first cruise, we weren't quite sure what to expect of the ship itself and were very pleasantly surprised to find that the ship glided so quietly and gently when underway and the docking/undocking at the various "ports" was so smooth that one was completely unaware that we had cast off! Travelling through the enormous locks was awe inspiring to say the least, such magnificent structures that raised the ship some 30metres on the larger locks. Life on board was idylic, the food was plentiful, the menus varied with lots of choice and the friendly staff were most helpful in every way. We enjoyed on board entertainment ranging from a demonstration of cork artwork to spectacular flamenco dancing. On our final day, after leaving for Porto airport one of our party suffered an injury just prior to boarding our aircraft which meant that we weren't allowed to fly. We rang the "Osfrid" explained our predicament and the staff arranged for a taxi to bring us back to the ship where we were welcomed back on board. As we relaxed over dinner the very caring staff (one of our tour excursion guides) spent the whole evening arranging for hotel accommodation in Porto, flights back to the UK and all transfers back to Manchester. I cannot speak too highly of the trouble taken to smooth our return journey. Would we go again? Most certainly, we really would love to repeat the same "River of Gold" cruise as there is still so much that we did not get to see that a repeat visit would solve. However, we decided to "expand our horizons" next year and have already booked a Viking river cruise to Eastern Europe. Read Less

It was recommended by previous friends and relatives who had travelled with Viking numerous times. Having done many ocean cruises we decided to try a river cruise. It did not disappoint the excursions were very good only you need to be fit with all the walking involved but from our point of view they were excellent. Staff were very helpful nothing too much trouble and always very professional in their attitude, and keep you well informed of any activities and what to see of places of interest etc. The ship was always clean in fact it was spotless. There was a small amount of evening activities but by the time you had the evening meal you were ready for bed due to the hectic day you had with the excursions. The only complaint we had was the cabin with a French balcony it was so small the twin beds were so close. It would be nice if Viking did river cruises in the British Isles. Read Less

The guides, ah we talked a lot about how much fun they were; they made the experience fun as well as providing a historical background. I would do this cruise again as it was fun. Really enjoyed the day sailing with all the castles, vineyards, made this a day to remember. Cologne was my favorite stop. City was close and accessible with lots of dining sites to see. Our Cabin was great, didn't have time to turn on the TV, there was always something to do, and for down time just going up on deck was our choice. Nothing was left out of the experience, and leaving, though regretful was handled so there was little though required. Read Less

The menus at meals offered healthy options and a vast selection of items from which to use. The crew was so much fun! I don't believe I've laughed that hard in years because of the great evening programs. I appreciated the casual atmosphere where there were no requirements for formal wear. The cabin was small but immaculate, adequate with all the comforts anyone would need. Our luggage did not arrive with us in Moscow. Two days later it appeared but the staff did everything to help us and offer laundry service and bathroom accessories until our luggage was found and delivered. What could have been a horrible experience turned into a somewhat humorous approach. In general, this trip was not only fascinating because of a diverse culture but it was extremely fun! Read Less

Although we had been on several ocean cruises with other lines, this was our first river cruise. It coincided with our 40th wedding anniversary and we wanted something special. We boarded the ship and immediately felt welcome. The crew was awesome. No need went unmet. Unlike the ocean cruises, we were part of a small group - 180+ passengers. By the end of the cruise, we'd gotten to meet almost everyone and formed special friendships with several. The Captain, at first, gave the impression of a gruff exterior but soon revealed a warm and friendly person. He invited us to visit the bridge to see how they navigated and welcomed the passengers to visit as long when things weren't too busy. The entire crew was very friendly - from the captain to the cooks and deck hands. Our cabin was kept fresh and stocked by a delightful young lady. Of particular note was the Cruise Director - Bujon (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). He went out of his way to insure everyone had a great time. His personality couldn't be better suited for the job. Always a ready smile. The dining experience was also delightful with special attention to dietary restrictions. The dining room staff was very friendly and pleasant to work with. The food never failed to please the palate. We couldn't have asked for a better 40th Anniversary celebration! Read Less

I loved the dining options...al fresco, nothing but great views, small and large tables depending on your mood. Kind of felt like a place "where everybody knows your name" and I can't wait to go again. Best part is, you feel like a tourist but get a relaxing vacation all at the same time. Many times we opted out of excursions just to sit on top of the boat and watch the beautiful scenery slide by! Don't miss booking a room with a "juliet" balcony. Every evening she had a different program to keep us entertained. The food was great as well as the service. The crew made you feel like you were part of the family. The excursions were well thought out and very interesting. The ship was spotless and very attractive. All of the crew members were great. I would travel on Viking again in a minute. We have wanted to visit Russia for a long time, but were a bit concerned about going independently due to potential language barrier, safety, etc. Viking took care of all of the details and we were able to just enjoy the experience. There was a nice mix of planned excursions and free time. We enjoy some exploring on our own and the staff was so helpful in providing maps, directions, and helpful tips. The crew on the ship were delightful and we felt we got to know many of them. They remembered our preferences and were always welcoming and friendly. Our room was nice, although there was a slight musty odor at times. The bathroom was very adequate and we loved having the private balcony, which we used often. The excursions were extremely well organized and led by wonderful Viking tour guides or local guides. We enjoyed all of the excursions, although the Hermitage museum was so crowded (not Viking's fault) it was difficult to get to see everything we would have like to see. Our Viking guide at the Hermitage guided us expertly to all of the "must-see" masterpieces and we made the best of a packed museum. We found the Russian people friendly and hospitable and interested in talking with us. The post trip to Helsinki was wonderful and we highly recommend a visit to beautiful Helsinki. The hotels chosen for us in both Prague and Paris were centrally located which made it very easy to explore on our own The negatives....most ports required transportation to the cities on our itinerary, sometimes taking up to two hours. Therefore following our tour we had very little time to explore before we got back on a bus again. We enjoyed Wassau Valley as words can’t describe his beautiful it is. Food was good. The only negative is that we felt our room was cramped. On the plus side, there are lot of extra amenities in the room such as a Flat screen TV, a small refrigerator, and a comfortable bed. The room service was excellent. I have a hearings disability. They have an excellent sound system for both tours and on ships. They were very accommodating to ensure my hearing aid and cochlear device works well with their sound system. I observed that the Ve personnel were very accommodating to limited mobility passengers. On a tour to Czech Republic, a passenger got tired while touring and the Ve proceeded to get him a cab and returned him to the ship 2 hours away. I'm a solo traveler, and would definitely take this tour again. It's my favorite Viking cruise to date! The Bordeaux region is fabulous - I'd recommend it whether or not you love wine! I'd highly recommend the pre-cruise tour of the Loire Valley. All of the towns and villages throughout the cruise were so enjoyable - picking up a baguette from the local boulangerie and fresh cheeses at the fromagerie, picking out treats at the master chocolatiers, buying tulips for my room at the farmers market, and, of course, visiting wineries and top notch wine shops with a full range of France's finest beverage. That's not to diminish the cognac tour! Blending our own cognac was delightful. Also made some new friends who I've enjoyed connecting with since returning home. Also: * Embarking and disembarking was a breeze. * The ship's updated cabin was comfortable and efficient. * The crew was exceptionally energetic and fun! * The food did not disappoint - good variety and options, as usual! The staff on our most recent cruise was particularly enjoyable. Mario the cruise director was knowledgeable and always ready to assist and answer any questions. The two game nights were especially entertaining. The wait staff in the dining room, were beyond delightful. Carman, one of the dining room captains, along with Chip, were a delight to be with, and they took the extra time to assure we had everything we needed. The staff in the lounge, led by head bartender Armando, and his trusty, knowledgeable duo of Robert and Matej, made sure whatever drink we desired was prepared, and prepared properly.
