We had received brochures from Viking for several years, but until we both retired we didn’t take them “seriously”. Once we made the decision to book a cruise we researched the options, spoke with friends who had taken Viking trips and chose the Rinda Cruise along the Seine. The trip was beyond our expectations...the food, the accommodations, the attention to detail. We felt so comfortable on the excursions, liked the “audio-box” communication on the excursions, the staff were terrific, the food great. The itinerary sheets delivered to our room for the next day were very helpful and the evening meetings pertaining to the next days’ excursions were very appreciated. We intend to take another Viking Cruise in the future, although at this time we have not booked a trip....personal health issues have a bearing.....We highly recommend the Viking Cruise excursions! We hope to take a cruise along the Rhine River and maybe a Southern France trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it included Paris, Normandy beaches—and then, on part two, Provence—Arles and Avignon. On a prior cruise—“Romantic Danube”—we particularly enjoyed stops at smaller towns along the river. This trip did have those stops, and we liked them a lot! Every tour guide we had was EXCELLENT. The on-board cuisine did well to give us what would be “local fare.” The only meal I really did not like was NOT due to flavor, but due to “logistics”—that is, serving a meal that was totally—i.e. all courses—buffet style was not good. Cumbersome, slow, and not as conducive to a good sampling of the local fare as I think Viking thought it was. All of the included tours we went on were VERY WELL led, with guides who were personable and knowledgeable. Our only “glitch” was not being fully informed about our train “get off” point in Lyon—our guide did tell us to get off at Lyon the last train station, but did NOT tell us that Lyon had. TWO rail stations. So we got off the train when it arrived in Lyon. This was not right! While the subsequent scramble we experienced to get from Lyon rail station #1 to the docking point for our Viking boat was an adventure, I’m not sure all Viking travelers would have recollected it in such amusement as did we! It’s great to “let go and let Viking” in terms of most ALL of the travel details. Thank you! Read Less

My wife had never been to France even though we’ve travelled on six continents. So we planned this week on the Rhône to be followed by a week on the Seine, and then a week in an apartment in Paris. We arrived in Avignon a day early and stayed near the dock. In the morning I walked to 5he ship and was pleasantly surprised that our room was ready. The Viking employee that helped us with our luggage was one of our waiters from the Grang European Viking cruise we had taken two years before. Surprisingly, he remembered us! As usual, the tours were well organized and interesting. We didn’t do any of the optional tours but since our ship was well located, we were able to entertain ourselves in the towns we visited. The ship was well maintained. No nicks or scuffs or other signs of wear. The food was outstanding. I also thought the evening entertainment was good, but the tv coverage wasn’t up to the standard of our previous trips with Viking. If you’re interested in France, I’d recommend this trip with Viking. Read Less

We enjoyed the pre-tour of Paris. It gave us time to relax and adjust to the time change before we sailed. The tour director was great, always available to help with our questions. We liked the choices of tours included with the cruise. The food was very good, with very helpful waiters for custom requests. This was our third cruise followed by our fourth on Viking after we took the bullet train to southern France for another cruise. We appreciate the fact that almost everything was included in the price. The evening entertainment was good when there was something available but we would have would have enjoyed more local entertainment brought in and more talks on the local food and culture. Always having beverages available was a nice convenience - especially including cookies or muffins or some type of snacks we could just go and pick up. We are looking forward to one of your ocean cruises. Read Less

My husband and I recently made our second Viking cruise. Both trips were wonderful. The excursions and ship entertainment were both enjoyable, but the most outstanding thing about both trips was the service. So many situations come to mind when I say service but one was most memorable. At about 9:00 PM on a Wednesday evening I realized that I had not packed enough insulin for my husband. Immediately, I went to the front desk to ask about medical possibilities for getting a new prescription on France. The attendant called a doctor who came to us. He examined my husband, wrote us a script, and said that we needed to have it immediately. Now the most amazing part: a young ship employee actually ran from where we were docked to a pharmacy to get our medicine! he had it back to us in almost half an hour. Now that is service! Read Less

The Rinda trip from Paris to Normandy was spectacular. I loved the port stops in Vernon/Giverny, Rouen and Les Andelys. The ship was gorgeous, the food was amazing and the crew were a delight. A couple of suggestions: 1. The “Silver Spirits” bar package was well worth the $300 per cabin. Not that we were barflies, but it entitles you to almost any wine off their wine list. The house wines included with lunch and dinner were fine, but they had some really great ones on the list. 2. Be aware that the ship docks in Le Pecq, a suburb, and not Paris proper. If you want to go into the city on embarkation day, you can get there for less than 5 euros on the RER train. The St Germain en Leye station on the A1 line is close and stops in the heart of the city is close but it is a steep climb The included tour to Giverny is a bit rushed, while you have more time than you need. You might want to consider getting a cab to stay longer. The crowd does tend to skew older, although we did have some intergenerational groups. I am happy to answer any questions. Read Less

This trip was amazing from the start. We were met by Viking representatives that had a desk at the airport. We were driven from the airport to the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel. We had no idea that it would be so far from the airport. We had initially considered finding a cheaper hotel and seeing Paris on our own. We so glad that we decided to book the 3-day pre-cruise in Paris. It gave us the opportunity to rest after the long flight from the west coast. We also had the opportunity to visit top visitor attractions in Paris that other cruisers saw only on a bus tour. The hotel was close to the Opera House and many visitor attractions. But the best part of the trip is that we got to meet other Viking cruisers at the hotel and quickly became friends. We visited Notre Dame, the Louve, Musee D'Orsay, the Eifel Tower, and had the opportunity to use the Paris Metro transportation system with our new friends. Viking had a desk in the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel and the pre-tour excursions and neighbor walk was well done. The hotel's buffet breakfast was great. We found Paris' attractions to be very crowded, although we were traveled during an off season. We especially enjoyed Viking's itinerary and being able to see places off of the beaten track: Giverney and Monet's Garden, Roeun and it's spired cathedrals, Normandy, and La Roche-Guyon with its amazing castle built next to a cliff and 300 spiraling steps that lead UP to the dungeons at the top. I could have stayed at Monet's Garden all day! The history of D-Day and Normandy lead us to do a lot of reading about WWII when we returned and gave us a greater appreciation of the ingenuity to build artificial harbors in England for the 5 Normandy beaches and the courage of our US and allied soldiers. We had previously gone on a Holland America cruise, but preferred the more intimate Viking river cruise experience with a maximum of 190 cruisers. The food and the service were superb. The chefs were very accommodating when there were special diet requirements. Throughout the trip, we liked the portable audio device that allowed us to hear the local guides clearly. We also liked that we were broken into smaller groups and that there were several guides. It was nice that daily excursions were included in the cruise price. Some of the excursions required us to get up early the next day so we didn't take advantage of the entertainment. We went only to one. The staff calls you by name. You are not a room number. Amazing! On the final day, a Viking agent accompanied us to the airport. We got to the airport 3 hours, 20 minutes before the departure time. It was like Disneyland with lines that snaked. We crept along one long line and that was followed by at least 3 additional long lines. We were so glad that a Viking agent was there to communicate with the French-speaking agent at the airport. We barely made it on to our flight. What made our trip especially memorable was meeting new friends. We hope that we can travel together on future Viking cruises. Everything was perfect and it this was one of our most memorable trips. Thank you Viking staff! Read Less

The only river cruise I could get my husband to agree to because it was going to Normandy. However, we both loved the whole trip! The cabin, the food, the crew were all outstanding! The views of the French countryside were so beautiful! It was such a delight to visit the small towns and villages along the Seine. Monet’s gardens were one of the many beautiful highlights! Each included tour at the different towns we docked at were led by very knowledgeable locals. The tour guides gave us the history of each of the French villages we visited as we walked along seeing the sites that the guides described. The ship itself was the perfect size, less than 200 passengers which made it easy to meet new friends and dinner mates. The food at each meal was so tasty and presented like a true first class restaurant. The service at meal time was amazing! The servers were very friendly and accommodating and their service was better than any we have had stateside and we’ve eaten at many restaurants! The cruise director was also amazing, he was so funny and delighted us with information about upcoming shore excursions as well as humorous comments about the daily happenings. Read Less

We did the Viking Rhine cruise last year and wanted to see Paris & the Normandy excursion seemed to fit our needs this year. As usual, our cabin was nice & they kept it that way as well as the whole ship. We found the staff extremely helpful & competent & all went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food was outstanding, the wines were good and the entertainment was very nice. Our shore excursions were just right and the guides were extremely knowledgeable & helpful. Our only complaint was the bed covering was a combination bed spread, sheet & blanket. It became too hot in the middle of the night, yet your only option was to throw if off & then it became too cool. A sheet would help, but at least have a light blanket in the closet that could be used to compensate for this poor design. Also, our tour guide to Versailles apparently lost his ticket and we were sidelined for about 30 minutes while he tried to telephone for a replacement. In the mean-time, about 3000 other people poured into the place while we just stayed out of their way. Other than that incident, he was quite competent. Read Less

We decided to take a Viking River Cruise just because it looked like a good thing to try for our first trip abroad. And we were not disappointed! Starting with our flight. We chose the round trip air option from Viking on Air France, great airline. We were met on our arrival in Paris by Viking representatives and taken by motor coach to our ship The Viking Rinda, the ship was just beautiful. We were greeted graciously and checked in, then explored the ship a little and by the time we got to our very nicely appointed Veranda (B) cabin on the main deck our luggage was already there. Dining aboard the ship was an delightful experience. We looked forward to every meal on board ship. The entertainment and activities provided on board made us feel included with all that was going on. Our ports were very convenient and shore excursions were both beautiful and educational. Now about the crew... From the Captain to the deck hands, What a ride, smooth and comfortable. From The Head Chef to the waiters, food and drink we could not have enjoyed more. From the Program Director to the tour guides, knowledgeable and well coordinated. And from the Hotel Manager to the cabin attendants, very accommodating and attentive. We would like to say that the entire crew were courteous, hard working and eager to meet all our needs. None of our request went unanswered or unfulfilled. Would we go again? Absolutely, We are already looking for our next destination! Read Less

We were a party of eight traveling with our family and friends. Our special pleasure was traveling with our eighteen and fourteen-year-old granddaughters that made our trip so wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the beauty of Paris and how wonderfully we were treated by the French people. The excursions to the towns and beaches of Normandy were so moving, we really appreciated what our soldiers as well as the allies did to stop Hitler's tyranny in Europe. Our visit to Giverny and Monet's Garden was much more than we ever expected, living pictures of what we have seen on his canvas. The ship was beautiful, the crew could not be more accommodating, especially the husband and wife team who were the Executive Chef and Maîtres d'. We also would like to give praise to the Hotel Manager, the Cruise Manager, our tour guides and the food servers for their dedicated work. The food of course was fabulous! The chance to see the site of the World War 2 Invasion was one major reason for the choice. Also my first experience of Paris. Airport greeting, embarkation, disembarkation and airport return were exceptional. The 3 day stay over in Paris was more than I had hoped for. The Hotel Rochester was just 2 blocks from the Champs Elysee and very chose to a Metro entrance. The guides were fantastic, both during the cruise and during the stay over.. As this was my third Viking River Cruise, I knew I would be treated like a king. The ship and Cabin were always clean and comfortable. The service was immediate and always friendly. The wine selection at each meal was quite appropriate. I am looking forward to my next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We decided to see France in style and comfort, and we certainly did! - We arrived at Charles de Gaule at 9 AM on Easter Sunday, and were met by a Viking driver in a black Mercedes--just for us. Then, off to the pre-cruise hotel, the 5-star (in my view) Hotel Rochester Champs Elysees, Paris. This hotel, on Rue La Boetie, is perfectly situated: 1/2 block to a bakery, 1/2 block to an ATM, 1/2 block from the Saint Phillipe du Roule metro stop (get the 10 metro/bus ride carnet pack), and 1/2 block to St. Phillipe Church for Easter morning services! The Rochester staff is helpful and very accommodating, the rooms perfect, and the morning breakfast was great. Note to Viking HQ: keep this hotel in your stable of Paris hotels--and at the top of the list!! - The provided Viking Walking tour the next day of the Bastille-St Paul-Hotel de Ville areas and the Jewish Quarter were outstanding. Our Swedish-American-Parisian tour guide was as informative as he was hilarious. That night we opted for 4-hour evening dinner on the Seine with Bateaux Mouches. The sun set as we began the cruise, and the lighted Eiffel Tower at 10 PM is spectacular. The next day we took at full day bicycle tour of Versailles town and market, the Palace gardens and Palace itself with Fat Tire Tours. I cannot imagine a better tour of Versailles. - Yes, we boarded the Viking Rinda in the suburbs at Le Pecq, 45 minutes of town. A very nice suburb, beautiful museum and gardens, and a direct RER line to downtown Paris. The staff of the Rinda were great, and our next 6 days were wonderful. Highlights: Giverny and the Gardens; Rouen and the optional Countryside tour to a Sheep Farm/Apple Orchards; Normandy and Omaha Beach visit; and Napoleon and Josephine's Chateau at Malmaison. Our tour guide in Normandy was the granddaughter of a "D-Day" family, whose farm traded sides that day, twice. She made the tour very special, and very personal. This individual touch is something Viking is noted for, and should be recognized for their forethought. Our private tour of Malmaison and its gardens closed out a great experience in Paris and the Heart of Normandy Read Less

This was the second part of the France's Finest 14 day cruise we booked. The first leg was from Avignon to Lyon. We were taken to the train station in Lyon for the high speed train trip, first class, to Paris. This took about 2 hours. We were met by a Viking representative and taken by small luxury van to the port in Le Pecq outside of Paris. Our embarkation was smooth and within minutes we were in our room. Lunch was also being served for the new passengers and it was nice to be well rested and able to take advantage of the ship at this time. This leg we also chose the lowest category as we did not wish to have a balcony due to the time of year (October) and being told that sometimes the ships are stacked and you are facing another ship. Considering how little time we spent in our room, we are glad we did not spend the extra money. We were in room 123, which was the opposite side from our room on the Delling the previous week. We preferred the even side as in most ports we were facing the river, not the port. The room is well planned and lit. There is room under the bed for luggage, a water bottled filled daily on your desk, small listening devices for the tours (make sure they are always charged and take them with you for every tour), as well as a real hair dryer, not like some that we have had on ocean cruises. The bathroom is small but plenty of room for toiletries and great water pressure in the shower. The room is impeccably clean and remained that way throughout the cruise. Let me say now that the staff on the Rinda was wonderful. From the captain to the kitchen staff, to the great Program Director, Susann, they could not have been more friendly or helpful. The; ship is beautiful and clean. The food is outstanding with so many choices. The wait staff if also amazing. We tried to keep the same server thoughout and we had the most wonderful waiter, Paul. He took care of our table of 5 women and one man with humor and perfect service. I highly recommend taking advantage of the included walking tours. They are filled with good information and will provide you a glimpse of the town where you may choose tor return on your own. Paris: We opted for the Paris City Tour with Louvre Optional Excursion, but you could simply do the city tour for free and stay in the city until the shuttle returned. By bus we drove through the city seeing the Champs-elysees, a photo stop at the Eiffel Tower and a stop at Notre Dame Cathedral. Here we had a tour and time to explore on our own. Due to the timing of this excursion, rather than returning to the ship for lunch, we had lunch at a local cafe which was included. It was cool but nice enough to sit outside. Nothing like sitting in an outdoor cafe in Paris! From here we continue on to the Louvre. We had a tour guide who showed us the highlights. We actually got to see the Mona Lisa up front as the crowds were so small in October. We had some time to visit an amazing chocolate shop within the Louvre, La Maison du Chocolat. Wow! Some of the best chocolate ever. Great tour. Vernon: We oped for the Monet Foundation tour in Giverny that included the house and gardens. We were concerned that in October there might not be much to see in the garden but we were wrong. Beautiful colors everywhere! We had plenty of time to shop both in the Monet shop and in the town and visit the church where Monet is buried. This was a fabulous, included excursion. In the afternoon we took the walking tour of Vernon. This turned out to be one of our favorite towns. Our guide was wonderful and the shopping was really good! Very scenic. Rouen: Took the walking tour of Rouen in the afternoon and it is a beautiful town where you can get right off the ship and explore on your own. Beautiful architecture and history and great shopping, too! The cathedral is beautiful and the church dedicated to St. Joan of Arc is modern but also beautiful. There was a festival going on and it was extremely busy and crowded but that didn't take away from our enjoying of Rouen. Rouen, day 2, to Normandy: The Normandy beaches tour is an all day tour and included. We began in Arromanches for a tour of the museum that included a movie about the Normandy invasion. Very informative and sobering. Lunch was included here and we did have time to shop in this beautiful seaside town. Next we drove to Longues sur Mer to see the various gun batteries along the sea. Many still remain and it is hard to believe such ugliness could have been in the beautiful place. We then went to the American cemetery. It is hard to describe this place and all that it means. When we got off the bus we were given long stemmed roses to place on a grave. My husband and I looked for soldiers from our state. There was a ceremony at the memorial where all veterans in our group participated. It was moving and very sad. When they played taps, there was not one person with dry eyes. Our program director was probably the most emotional and she isn't American. We had time to visit the museum here, too, and it is heartbreaking and moving but a must see. We then went to Omaha Beach were we could walk on the beach and view the beautiful memorial there. This is one of the most important tours we have ever taken. There is also a tour for Canadians and Brits. Highly recommended. It is a long day, but worth it. Les Andelys: Beautiful town. We did not take the walking tour as my husband got a virus and wasn't feeling up to climbing to the castle, which was OK by me! We walked the town on our own and did some shopping and returned to the ship. It was another beautiful day so I found a nice spot and read looking out over this picturesque town! Getting back to my husband, he did not make it to dinner that night because he wanted to feel better for our trip to Versailles the next day. I went to dinner and saw they were serving French onion soup and I asked our waiter if I could get a bowl to take to my husband. Not 2 minutes later, Susann, our Program Director, came to my table with a tray with soup and break and butter for him. I walked with her to our room to give it to him and he was so shocked an happy. From then on every time she saw us she would ask how he was. That is the kind of service you receive on this ship! Paris: We opted for the Versailles excursion. We drove to Versailles where we were put into groups for the tour. We had a great tour guide who was British and really knew his way around! His tour was informative and fun. We toured the gardens first and they were beautiful but Paris had recently had a frost and all the flowers were gone. Still beautiful in the October sun and blue sky! The inside tour was very informative and beautiful. If you don't want to pay for this excursion, the staff will happily show you how to get a bus from the port to Versailles. There you can pay your own admission but in busy times, this may not be the best way to go. We were there in October and it was still very busy and having a guide was very helpful. We returned to the ship for lunch. You could also opt to get a shuttle into the city and do your own thing all day until the shuttle returned at 6:00 PM. There were many folks who did this. There is a Paris by Night excursion and our friends had told us it was just drive by's. I guess if you haven't seen Paris at night it would be worth it, but just know you do not stop anywhere. Disembarking was quick and we were transported to the airport. Some were opting for an extension in Paris or on their own. There are many presentations throughout the week as well as food sampling and special menus for both lunch and dinner. There are games in the bar at night, music playing and many fun things to do. The majority of the people on this cruise are in their 50's or 60's although you may find younger people. But this doesn't mean quiet and stodgy! These people like to party! Most are very well traveled and very friendly. On such a small cruise you are bound to meet people that you will enjoy dinner with as well as the excursion. This was one of the best things about this cruise! We had the beverage package even though you do have wine and beer included for lunch and dinner. I'm glad we did but not sure I would to it again. We loved this entire cruise. People ask if we preferred the southern cruise over the northern and there is no way to answer that. They are both spectacular in the sites and experiences. We are so looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise next December for the Christmas markets. Read Less

We're looking forward to doing the Rhone Lyon to Marseilles at some future date. We especially enjoyed the time at Omaha Beach & the American Cemetary. It was very special that day as it was Sunday, 9/11/16, and in addition to the little ceremony for the veterans (about half the passengers) they did a similar ceremony for the victims of the 9/11 attacks on New York, timed to coincide with when the first plane it the towers. Not a dry eye in the house! And having the roses to place on the tomstones was a very nice gesture. We've since talked with friends who did a similar cruise and went back to stay locally and see more of the sights. We would have enjoyed seeing St. Malo. Read Less

Not as many castles as some other cruises, but very much enjoyed the Seine River views of French villages and countryside. Had time to explore Paris, both on our own and with guided tours, both before departure and last day before leaving for home. The Normandy Beaches full-day excursion was very educational, emotional, and moving. For us personally it was the best part of the cruise. So much to see, had to pick and choose what we most wanted to see. The tours of The Louvre, Versailles, and Monet's gardens and home were great, both visually and educationally. Enjoyed Delling more mostly because of the place visited in southern France. Staff and facilities on both ships were excellent. Staff seemed to anticipate guest needs. The food was superb and chef and staff very friendly and helpful. The cabins were comfortable and bathroom and shower were above average. Enjoyed Normandy the most even though it was a long bus trip. Gave us enough time to see all the sites and do any shopping we wished to do. Paris was so large and could only do a limited number of tours but feel received best value for tours I was on. Second time Viking cruise; wanted to visit Amsterdam and many other cities along the Rhine river. We arrived two days before the cruise and stayed in Amsterdam. We made the mistake of arriving in the early (7 AM) morning in Amsterdam and couldn't check into our room until 3:00 PM. It was raining in Amsterdam; as a consequence, most of our time was spent in the Lobby of the Hotel. Service on board was excellent; the crew went out of their way to accommodate us with morning room coffee etc. Dining was excellent with a wide selection of local food, wine and beer. Hope to sail with Viking soon, also would like to check out Viking's Ocean Cruises. Viking is the only way to travel. Hope the come to the US and give our rivers a visit. Read Less

The Viking agent actually walked all passengers in our van into the airport to ensure we had no problems navigating the check-in process. We traveled on the Viking Rinda, cruising down the Seine from Paris to Normandy. What a wonderful and carefree way to travel. The Viking experience offers excellent customer service from start to finish. Staff on board the ship go out of their way to engage in conversation and ensure your care and comfort. Cuisine is very good and the chef incorporates local recipes to enhance the ambiance and experience of local flavors. Dining is freestyle which offers the opportunity to make new friends. We had a French Balcony cabin with a wonderful view out the sliding glass door. The bed was very comfortable. There is ample storage and space to store all travel necessities. There is also very good in room entertainment. Wifi is available at no cost, but can be spotty at times, depending on location. We absolutely loved the tours. Viking handles everything and excursions ran smoothly and on time. We elected to add a couple special tours, Palace of Versailles and Paris by Night. We happened to be at the beaches of Normandy on Memorial Day, which was very touching. Cruising down the Seine is beautiful and peaceful. The gardens and home of Monet were exquisite. We experienced art and history at it's best through the great planning of Viking River Cruises. Read Less

We loved the itinerary because we got to see Normandy beach, Monet's Garden and Versailles all in one 8 night river cruise. The ship was spotless; the food was excellent. This was our second river cruise and it will not be our last. Our cruise director, Ken, was fabulous. Our cabin steward was wonderful, too. Each day we took a tour with Viking and used the head phones in our room that we charged every night. The only downside was that the ship was technically not docked in Paris but about a half hour drive away with no view of the city. Plus, there wasn't much cruising because we didn't go very far up the Seine. Our first river cruise with Viking was 15 nights from Amsterdam to Budapest and an add on excursion to Prague; if you are looking for more cruising time, that is the cruise to take! Read Less

My father was the 13th man to jump over normandy beach during the D-Day invasion. This trip has a deep personal meaning to me and my family. The history, monuments, museums were all deeply moving to our family. Both my brother and our wives enjoyed a spectacular historical walk back in time that made this a very special event in our lives. In addition to the travel and historical experience, I must say that the crew on board was nothing short of first rate. Beginning with the activity director to the dining executive, the wait staff and servers were in a class by themselves. While I probably would have rated this trip highly just on the locations and destinations, it was the quality and attention to detail of the cruising staff that took this trip into a 5 star range. Kudos to everyone associated with this trip - thanks for making this special in so very many ways. Read Less

Although we have taken a number of ocean and Caribbean cruises, this was our first river cruise and our first visit to Paris. Bottom line: This was a very enjoyable trip, and that was essentially the comment we heard from everyone on the cruise with whom we spoke. A few people were unhappy that the Rinda docked in Le Pecq, rather than Paris as originally advertised, and had we not opted to take the 3-day pre-cruise extension in Paris I’m sure we, too, would have been. We made our reservations direct with Viking. Because this involved a number of firsts for us we purchased the air arrangements from Viking, along with an air “deviation”. And because of the deviation we chose we lost the airport transfer for our arrival in Paris, even though we were scheduled to arrive at about the same time as flights that Viking arranged. That’s Viking’s policy; however, after 3 attempts I got to someone at Viking who offered to try to get an exception for us. She succeeded. (Things did not go smoothly at the airport – it became obvious that we were swimming against the tide – however they did get us on one of the vans going to the hotel.) The pre-cruise hotel was 2 short blocks from the Eiffel Tower, 2 blocks from a Metro station, one block from an RER (suburban/regional railroad) station, and less than half a mile from a self-service laundromat. The Rinda is a clean, modern ship with a superb crew and staff. Everyone was competent, courteous, helpful, efficient and pleasant. The meals and wines were quite good. The one-man entertainment (Peter) was superb! All of the shore excursions were satisfactory; not as comprehensive as Road Scholar (Elder Hostel), which is to be expected, but on a par with (and better than some) excursions we have taken on other cruises. Recommendations of family members and friends led us to the VIking River Cruise. We were not disappointed! We loved the smaller ship, the somewhat slower pace. Everything was perfect! We have been on several larger ships for ocean cruises, and enjoyed them, but we have "matured,' and are now much more happy with a smaller, more compact space. We also appreciated the somewhat slower pace of the shore excursions, and the increased free time. The food was delicious, as was the wine (we purchased the silver spirit package,) and the bar service was attentive and prompt. We enjoyed relaxing on our balcony, as well as on the upper deck; the views were amazing! We liked the open seating in the dining room, and enjoyed getting to know many different travelers on the cruise. Due to the limited number of passengers, we felt more "connected" with the folks onboard, and we were ble to get to know the crew and staff, as well. Was it a good experience? Well, we have already booked 2 more VIking cruises! Read Less

This was our fourth Viking cruise and we had enjoyed every other one in the past. The ships are always lovely and the staff is attentive. Each guest is made to feel special. The cabins are kept very clean and have plenty of storage. The food is fabulous and chef makes a point of serving local dishes. We love being able to dine outside, especially at lunch time. The excursions are well organized and educational. Guides are local and well informed. We spent several days in Paris after the cruise and the hotel Viking used, Pullman, was well located, close to the Eiffel Tower. Rooms were very nice and a wonderful breakfast was included. There were many good restaurants within walking distance. Viking had a man at the desk able to help us with questions about the city and transportation. We have recommended Viking to many of our friends and will continue to do so! We are already planning our next trip. Read Less

We took the Paris and the Heart of Normandy cruise on October 26. Our real disappointment was the location of the dock. It was several miles outside of Paris which made it hard to visit the City whenever we wanted. That being said, the cruise, the staff, the food, and the scenery was wonderful. One of the best stops was the home of Monet and viewing his beautiful garden. Even though it was the end of the season (winter was fast approaching), we could still see the beauty in the garden. From every angle there was a new scene to paint or photograph. No wonder Monet spent so much time there. The next favorite thing was the shopping trip to a local market with the Chef. It was most interesting and informative. Of course, the main destination and main attraction was the Cemetery and Beaches of Normandy. We toured Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, where we had a private tribute to the brave men who gave so much there 70 years ago. This was one of the most moving and emotional parts of the trip. Visiting the almost 10,000 graves of American Soldiers who died there and seeing the wall listing the thousands of names of those who could not be located. We were disappointed only in that our visit was too short. We wish Viking would allow 2 days to see all of this. Read Less
