Our first river cruise with Viking...we were met at CDG airport upon arrival by the Viking staff, whisked to the motor coach for transfer to the Viking Rinda docked in Le Pecq, outside of Paris. Lovely location for walking on your own. A wonderful lunch was served and then our cabin was ready. Our cabin had a French Balcony on the second floor which I highly recommend. It is easy to make new friends because at all your meals it is open seating. At breakfast we met folks from Maine, Colorado, Canada etc. The staff is another reason the trip was so wonderful. Always a smile, there to help with any requests and Peter Jr. the bartender was fantastic and makes a mean Mojito. Some of the friends we made decided to sit together each evening when possible and Martina our wait staff was delightful, funny, and a real professional. A special thank you to all the Viking staff. Now a word about the Program Director, Ken, every evening before dinner we met in the Lounge for a briefing about the upcoming day tours etc. always a joke, always entertaining, always on top of everything while on board, on tours and he had a lot on his plate with 180+ guests to take care of. I hope Viking is aware of what a gem they have in having him on board and all the staff that we met while on this cruise from Paris to Normandy. Magnifique! Je vous remercie! a la prochaine! We had a marvelous time. The ship, our cabin, the staff, the meals and alcohol...all of these exceeded our expectations. The town stops and the tours were all excellent. The service was extraordinary; we have never experienced such good service anywhere or anyplace. The only confusion and downside was that we ended up sailing from Le Pecq which is a port on the far western edge of Paris. I understand now that Viking River cruises are dependent upon the French government for the port placement and the scheduling of the port that they sail in and out of. Apparently this gets shifted around a lot and the company has no control over this aspect of the river cruise business. I imagine that this must be highly irritating for Viking River cruises to contend with in scheduling and in dealing with customers. Our fantasy had been to sail from Port Alma in central Paris which would have been a grand exit and entry point. As we arrived a week early to explore Paris, this port change meant we had to take a taxi from the 7th arrondisement to Le Pecq which was quite a trek. (Viking River Cruise gave us a substantial shipboard voucher for drinks for our trouble which was quite nice). As it turned out, we were there during the attacks of November 13th and Le Pecq was a good place for us to be situated as docking in central Paris would not have been possible nor desirable. On that note, I must say that the shipboard staff handled that whole dreadful situation with calm, ease and aplomb. There was no heightening of anxiety but it was all taken quite seriously even so. They managed, at the last minute, as Paris was in lockdown, to get a tour for everyone to see Chartre cathedral. I found this quite remarkable and it reveals a powerful efficiency. Another note. I was absolutely appalled by and ashamed for many of my fellow American travelers. The staff, bartenders, table staff, room cleaning staff, tour guides and all the people in the kitchen are dependent upon the gratuity that the passengers contribute. The suggestions in the handbook that you will receive is an excellent guide. If you can afford to go on a river cruise and disembark for the daily tours then you can afford to pay the suggested gratuity! Given that it was the absolute best service we have ever received the gratuity was ENTIRELY reasonable and amounted to about E300 plus what we gave seperately to some extraordinary individuals. We took the Paris and the Heart of Normandy cruise on October 26. Our real disappointment was the location of the dock. It was several miles outside of Paris which made it hard to visit the City whenever we wanted. That being said, the cruise, the staff, the food, and the scenery was wonderful. One of the best stops was the home of Monet and viewing his beautiful garden. Even though it was the end of the season (winter was fast approaching), we could still see the beauty in the garden. From every angle there was a new scene to paint or photograph. No wonder Monet spent so much time there. The next favorite thing was the shopping trip to a local market with the Chef. It was most interesting and informative. Of course, the main destination and main attraction was the Cemetery and Beaches of Normandy. We toured Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, where we had a private tribute to the brave men who gave so much there 70 years ago. This was one of the most moving and emotional parts of the trip. Visiting the almost 10,000 graves of American Soldiers who died there and seeing the wall listing the thousands of names of those who could not be located. We were disappointed only in that our visit was too short. We wish Viking would allow 2 days to see all of this. Read Less

After several ocean cruises (which we love), this was our first river cruise. What an amazing experience!! The ship was beautiful - clean, very well laid out. The service was beyond impeccable. I was so impressed with the service - from the cruise director (who knew us after just one day!!), the wait staff, the front desk personnel... All around, we loved everything about our cruise. The excursions were very well organized and interesting. The food was delicious!! We particularly appreciated that alcohol with meals as well as the excursions were included in the price of the cruise so we didn't feel like we were nickeled and dimed the whole time. We met a wonderful array of people on the ship with whom we still keep in touch. We can't wait for our next river cruise. We are also looking forward to trying a Viking ocean cruise. Read Less

DO NOT RECOMMEND! Lost the promised and paid for 3 nights moored at Paris, reduced to a bus tour of one hour in and back, no evenings. Read Less

There were many disappointments on this highly touted river cruise to Normandy and back. First we did not dock in Paris as advertised and promised, but rather an hour from downtown and did not tell us until we boarded. This was the prime reason for the booking and no alternative dates were offered. Second, Internet service was the poorest of any cruise in the past 10 years. Third, there were many poor decisions made during this cruise to the detriment of passengers. No church service on Easter Sunday was arranged until the last minute. Food was mediocre at best with small portions and limited daily options. There was no room service food and lines were as long or longer than on most of the large ships we have been on. If you are used to top quality entertainment, shopping, activities on board, forget it on this ship. There was no money exchange service, Discover card not accepted, and no pre-recorded information about upcoming ports as on other ships. We were taken to the airport four hours before our flight and had to place luggage in the hall at 5:15 AM on disembarkation day, nearly six hours before flight time. What we thought would be our best cruise experience turned out to be the worst. Read Less

The Viking Rinda was a beautiful ship. We had sailed on Viking previously but not on their new longships. The new ships are truly much more luxurious. Really liked the top deck which permitted walking around the ship for exercise, a sun area and a covered area. It was also great for viewing as we went through the Iron Gate on the Danube and some locks. There was plenty of viewing room for all the passengers. The food was excellent and the alternate dining option for lunch and dinner was very nice. As we had good weather, we could sit out on deck and enjoy the lovely weather. The itinerary was excellent and the guides combined a lot of history with descriptions of the sites. They also had a lovely set of programs highlighting local music and dances. There was also a very informative lecture in Belgade on the area. Overall we were extremely pleased with the cruise and the staff who were attentive and gave us excellent ideas about things to do on our own time. Read Less
