We arrived a few days early to explore Paris on our own. After boarding the ship, we enjoyed our time on ship and explored Le Pecq (port city). Our experience in Normandy was very moving as Viking gave us flowers to place on the grave of our choice and conducted a service in memory of our troops who lost their lives. Viking's longboats are very comfortable, the staff is always working to make life onboard fun, the food is excellent and the excursions are informative/educational. We traveled with a group of 18 who took our own excursions, but joined together in the evenings for cocktails and dinner. The dining staff was very helpful in securing a section for our group to assure we had the opportunity to dine together. When we returned to Paris, our group chose to take the fast train to Lyon and connect with another Viking ship to Avignon. We were coached to the train station and a Viking representative was with us until we boarded. A Viking representative was waiting for our arrival in Lyon where we were coached to our new ship. Well done, Viking! Read Less

We choose the cruise because of the D Day beach on the agenda. We thought the ship was wonderful, accommodations and food outstanding. We enjoyed the fact that it was a smaller ship and could see the shore throughout the trip. We enjoyed the open seating arrangements as we got to meet many new friends. I took full advantage of the walking track to offset the wonderful food. There were a few nights when the dinner service was slow but courteous. This was the first cruise of the season, so still in a learning curve. The program director was a fountain of knowledge. I commend his historical knowledge and lectures. The tours were wonderful. It was disappointing to have the union strike delay one visit. Other than that, it was all wonderful. We have already booked another trip based on recommendations from some breakfast companions. We are going on the Rhine Getaway in December. My husband does not care for ocean cruises, but we are sold on Viking River Cruises and have added many more cruises to our bucket list. This was our first cruise with Viking. Our other cruise experiences were with another company and ocean cruises. Read Less

I wanted to see where WWII was fought and won and American servicemen's final resting place. The tour was very meaningful and our guide was very knowledgeable. The staff on board was helpful and the food was very good. Our tour director did every thing he could to help us have a meaningful experience. The tours were all very good and we were busy every day. While on board the lectures were also fun and interesting. We met interesting people; some of these we are still in contact with. The pick up at the airport was smooth as well as the drop off for departure. This trip was on our bucket list and it certainly met all my expectations. I was very impressed with all the excursions and the fact that it is all inclusive makes it a very good value. I would recommend the tour and have to many of them. Read Less

We chose the Normandy cruise because it was a place we had wanted to visit. Several couples from our development had been on this Viking cruise. Also our travel agent recommended Viking cruises. From the beginning of the cruise to the end we were treated royally. Viking met us at the airport and took us to a Viking bus. When we ended our cruise the reverse was true. Viking has thought of everything that will make a cruise comfortable and luxurious. It was our 50th anniversary year, and we found a bottle of champagne and two glasses in our room in honor of the occasion. Our program director was outstanding. He was extremely helpful and gave excellent lectures. The food was delicious; service excellent. We even had various drinks handed to us when we returned to the boat after a tour-- sometimes water, sometimes wine. The crew always had smiles and we're always considerate and understanding. We did not attend any of the evening entertainment , but we heard from others that it was excellent. Our tour guides were outstanding. Each guide had a different style in terms of how he or she presented the information on each tour. Part of the Normandy tour is a special service at the site given by an employee at Normandy, and it was very moving. Our room was ample in space. There was plenty of storage for our luggage. The staff was courteous and refreshed our room several times during each day. The wifi was often sporatic but that was no fault of Viking. Wifi connection depended on where we were. We met so many nice people on the boat. It was nice to visit with different people throughout the week during meal times and also on the tours. And as time went on we began to gravitate toward several couples whose company we enjoyed. We had beautiful weather on our trip, and our trip was over too soon. I in particular loved being pampered. We hope to enjoy another tour in the future. Read Less

We originally chose this cruise to see the beaches @ Normandy because our fathers landed there. We have been to Paris a number of times, so we enjoyed Paris on our own except for a late night "Paris under the lights" bus tour with a stop at the Eiffel tower..We were pleasantly surprised with the rest of the ports we stopped at. Monet's Gardens were extravagant and the excursions being included with local guides over a headset in our ears made it extremely informative. The beaches at Normandy were outstanding with stops at two beaches and an included tour of the museum on the British beach. The ceremony at the American cemetery was emotionally moving with each of us being given a rose to lay on a grave of one of the brave souls who gave their lives to establish a beachhead for the Allies to advance against the Third Reich. The meals and service on board were impeccable. In my estimation it was more than worth the investment. Crew was very friendly. The concierge went out of her way to help a friend traveling with us to pack and ship an oversize picture with frame he had purchased. Even the meal provided in a restaurant in one of the beach towns was outstanding. I will definitely cruise with Viking a third time. We had done the Christmas Markets on the Romantic Danube before this cruise and liked it very much as well. Viking is launching ships and expanding, but keeping the quality of its products and service at a high level. Other European River Cruise companies may appeal to those with "snobby" attitudes, but for my money, the value is exceptional with Viking. Read Less

Went from Paris to Normandy. Visited the Louvre, Museum D'Orsay, Eifel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and shopping in Paris. Our tour guide, Ken, was all world. The first day we said after him, Bon Jour, siv vous ple. The French people could not have been more welcoming, hospitable and helpful. Then to Monet;s home and gardens. Awesome, beautiful, spectacular. Son Brian =, an artist, took more than a150 dazzling pictures of the flowers and gardens. The colors of the flowers jumped out at you! The river journey was smooth and almost comforting. Then to Rouen, and a tour of Notre Dame Cathedral and a newly constructed church in the shape of a boat. The story of Joan of Arc is different than what we learned as children. She must have been one great lady with faith much greater than mine. Then on to Normandy. It was overwhelming. When we came back to the ship, our room was ship shape, and the food and wine at dinner were better than good. When you arrive at the cemetery (we were at the American), it reminds you of the true cost of war. All those young men, probably an average age of 22, from so many countries who gave their lives for their nations. They had veterans in the group come up, and then saluted them with the crowd singing the Star Spangled Banner. Tears were like raindrops on a light day. I am so thankful to those who served and those who sacrificed their lives so that we were able to come to Europe as free men and women. Viking was top shelf. As the old American comedian would say-Try it, you'll like it! Read Less

We had gone on cruises on large ships and wanted to experience this particular cruise through France to the Normandy area. We found the Viking cruise to be much superior to large ship cruises because they (Viking) allowed a much more personal experience, including personal time in cities throughout the cruise, less harried excursions, and all the touches you expect on a "cruise". These experiences were lush food, with apparently local produce and sources, extraordinary guides on excursions and state of the art buses. The excursions were executed on time, without problems even in slightly difficult driving conditions and weather. And our experience on this once in a lifetime trip was top drawer. We appreciated shopping opportunities, as well as all the photo taking opportunities as well. We had no problems with translating languages, as it seemed that most staff on board spoke at least 3 or more languages. It was extremely helpful, and added to our great time on Viking Cruise Lines.
