I have sailed a lot, probably close to100 cruises. On Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, I have spent over 360 days. But I was so impressed with everything about this voyage, I’m not sure I ever will go back to any other line; I think I have found my new home on the seas. embarkation and disembarkation both went very smoothly, a benefit of sailing with only 900 other passengers. This was not only the first and last day of the cruise but also for every port we visited. We were in Suite 4000, a ES1 category. Before sailing, I looked at the diagram for the owner’s suite on deck 7. I wondered if I would have wanted or needed everything provided in that cabin. Once we boarded and were settled in our suite, I was perfectly happy and would not have wanted to move upstairs. Heck, even the lowest standard cabins on Vining Ocean are better than many higher-level cabins on other cruise lines. I have often been a Grills passenger on Cunard. The Queen’s Grill on QM2 is considered by some to be the best restaurant at sea. Although Wiking does not offer dishes prepared table side, the quality and presentation and variety is equal to the food on other ships. Open dining was a delight and we never had a wait, It was nice to have the alternative dining restaurants and not have to pay extra. The rotating menu at the Chef’s Table was a deal. We ate there five nights during the month we were on board. Wine (which was not bad) and beer (which I don’t drink) were free during meals and I never paid for non-alcoholic beverages and coffee away from the restaurants. I consider it a benefit not to have a casino on the ships, photographers always wanting to take your picture, and on the shops on board lining the hallways as they apply their wares. I loved not having announcements every hour. The lecturers were very good and well-versed to discuss their topics, especially the port talks. Evening stage shows were above-average and well attended, but not the glitzy performances produced on larger ships. At least one excursion is free in every port. I participated in some of those and they were fine. The optional, paid excursions were well run and educational. Good variety of options. The gym is good, plenty of machines. Never crowded. A great spa and - since the line is Norwegian - great sauna, jacuzzi, ice water buckets AND a snow grotto. Imagine a snowball fight in the Suez Canal, I can’t say enough to complement the Viking professionals who made this such an enjoyable adventure. I liked it so much that I already have booked a one month journey next summer. I am sold on Viking! Read Less

We have taken two Viking river cruises and wanted to experience an ocean cruise with Viking. We were not disappointed!! It was even more than we hoped for in every aspect! T We enjoyed some time in a Villa before embarking. The new ship had everything we could have asked for in the line of amenities and entertainment and gracious living! We were spoiled!! We especially like the spa, infinity pool and the daily afternoon teas. The shore excursions were handled very well and very educational. Our post extension in Athens was equally fantastic-sights, food and always help from the Viking Reps. The ship's food was fabulous and the entertainment was first rate. Embarkation went more smoothly than we thought possible. Our cabin, a deluxe veranda, was spacious and very comfortable. We traveled with two other couples and our rooms were adjacent to each other. Whenever we were in port, the staff came to turn down the veranda dividers so we could all visit without leaning over the dividers- we didn't even ask for them to do this. The staff and crew were always smiling and in good humor- at the ready to help and make our cruise a memorable one! And it was!! . Read Less

The trip was splendid. Two years ago, we took a marvelous Viking river cruise up the Danube that covered the eastern side of the former Yugoslavia (now Serbia & Croatia), so we chose to go down the western side (Croatia and Montenegro) when we saw that the Orion was going to make the trip. Having lived in Europe for about 10 years, and having been to Venice and Athens 3 and 4 times, we found visiting them again was splendid as we got the opportunities to observe change as well as explore other locations within those cities. We found our shore excursion guides in Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, and especially Olympia, to be superb. The visit to Corfu, while not "awful", was not up to the standards set by the other visits. The service by the crew was especially good, be it for the cabin, dining, activities. The "entertainment", particularly its academic side (be it astronomical or historical reviews of destinations) was first rate--not too much and not too little. We especially liked the libraries. The gym and the bars were first rate. Viking, by holding its passenger size down to less than a thousand, has made the trips reasonable. I travel to the Caribbean islands about once a year (but not by ship) and am astounded by several vessels coming in, each carrying multiples of thousands. The same goes for visiting cities like Venice and Athens. I fear that too many people at one time may ruin a good thing. So would I go again? Rivers? Definitely! Seas and oceans? Not so sure... We’ve always wanted to go on a cruise to Italy and this was the best one we could find for the dates we wanted. The cruise was excellent and the service was exceptional. The ship and cabins were exceptionally clean but this is a new ship for Viking. Our only complaint about the cruise is that some of the included excursions were bus tours of the cities which gave us few opportunities for taking photos. The tour guide were very knowledgeable about the places they showed us but were difficult to understand on the bus tours. If you want to spend time in Rome, I suggest you get there a day or two earlier or purchase the pre cruise package. Dining on the ship was excellent with some of the best European food we’ve had. With the buffet style World Cafè for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you should never go hungry. And did I mention that the food is awesome? This was our second time on a Viking tour (our first was a river cruise) and there is no doubt in my mind, there will be more. Read Less

We lived Viking River Cruises so we thought we would try an ocean cruise. Traveling around the boot of Italy sounded like a great first Ocean Cruise. We heard Viking’s Ocean Cruises were No. 1 so we decided t go with it. Great decision!!! People were so nice, food was delicious, tours beautiful and the whole trip a wonderful experience. We highly recommend it to everyone we talk to. Breakfast was always very tasty and friendly service everywhere. When we had lunch onboard we always had choices around the ship. Dinners were the best! Special restaurants were available with gourmet meals and wines! Entertainment was always available with so much talent. Special bars were located all over the ship with very friendly and helpful bartenders. The pools were fun to jump into at the end of very hot days. Overall I just have to say that it was the best trip we have ever been on. Thank you for a trip of a lifetime! Read Less

Orion was immaculate, a new ship and the crew was together just two months prior to our sailing; so in essence, everyone was "new" onboard. In true Viking fashion, everything went very smoothly (for us). We essentially sailed what's now called Mediterranean Odyssey (Barcelona to Venice). Our cruise was somehow overbooked, so the ship seemed more crowded than usual, full capacity I'm sure. (We've cruised with Viking several times, both River and Ocean.) Nonetheless, they asked for daily real-time feedbacks and seemed to make adjustments along the way. Overall, the trip was very enjoyable. Unfortunately, just about every port we went to was extremely hot. The walking tours would have been wonderful strolls otherwise. Nevertheless, we saw and learned so much. The trip gave us what we wanted: an overview of the land for future visits. Things that were unexpectedly outstanding: the cruise director and the entertainment. The cruise director was very personable and talented. He also mixed with the crowd. We found the singing/dancing by the four young people at the theater totally amazing. When not performing, they greeted us at the theater doors, and impressed us as ordinary people, all from the UK. When on stage, however, they transformed into professional performers who sang ABBA, Beatles, and Broadway songs. Their choreography was excellent. I was transported back to the 60s/70s. Parts of the Broadway songs even brought tears to my eyes--just wonderful performance. Read Less

This was an excellent cruise line. One of the outstanding features is that it is really an adults only cruise. I have nothing against children but it's not relaxing when you have to listen to whiny children on a cruise you've worked so hard to be able to pay for. Time and place, etc. It was educational as well. Shore excursions offerings were spectacular and educational. The guides provided were excellent and knew their stuff. Another plus with Viking is that they don't try to sell you things while you are on your vacation. Have cruised Royal Caribbean's Alaska Cruise. While that cruise was enjoyable, they were always trying to sell us things like liquor packages, pictures, etc. They did not do this on Viking. Also big plus was the size of the ship. It was smaller and more intimate yet inclusive. Staff was excellent. Meals were very good. So nice to have a veranda in every stateroom. Would highly recommend Viking and will go again in two years on another cruise. Read Less

My sister and I have always wanted to cruise on a smaller ship and see the Mediterranean. We had been on a Viking River Cruise and discovered they had a new fleet of Ocean ships. The Viking Orion ship is beautiful with all of the elegant touched of Nordic style, art, and the space explorer theme was especially wonderful. Our local guides and thoughtful and friendly crew made us feel at home and provided enriching excursions at every port. Food choices were awesome, and the spa exceptional. I loved listening to piano and guitar music in the atrium and viewing art in the changing 3 story display. There were plenty of quiet places to relax and enjoy watching the scenery. We never felt crowded. The resident astronomer set up a powerful telescope on deck for us to view the rings of Saturn and moons of Jupiter, and we also spotted the international space station making its way across the sky. We also enjoyed two 3-d shows in the ship’s planetarium. A special highlight was watching the movie under the stars on the top deck that featured Florence the day before we set off for our post cruise Tuscany adventure. This was truly an adventure of a lifetime and worth every penny. We had to depart the day we arrived in Barcelona, but were able to arrange tickets to tour the Cathedral de Familia on our own, that had to be purchased months ahead of time. It was so beautiful and inspiring, and the first of many beautiful and amazing churches we would see at every port. Read Less

We chose the cruise because we enjoyed the river cruise we took in May of 2017. We also wanted to compare the ocean cruise to Princess ocean cruises. We liked the smaller ship, loved the free laundry. The entertainment was good for a smaller ship. Princess entertainment is extravagant in comparison, due to the fact that they have been around longer and are experienced in it. Their sets are well designed and we enjoyed meeting the actors, seeing their rooms and finding out about what it takes to be an entertainer on Princess. We loved eating at the Chef's Table, Asian Panorama. We enjoyed the Winter Garden, the spa with the Snow Gratto. We enjoyed dancing on the deck under the stars and at the night club, danced from 8:30 PM until it closed. It was such a wonderful experience that we booked another Viking Ocean cruise in May of 2019. Read Less

I had heard that Viking Cruises provided a higher cultural experience than other lines. I find that to be true. The music, lectures, art on board all lend to a extraordinary experience. The spa and fitness center are excellent. There is no casino, water slides, blaring music or kids. The amenities included (WiFi, shore excursions, drinks at dinner) are well worth it. The free shore excursions are all walking tours of whatever port we are in. Those that we booked I found interesting. If you are in the last group that gets to book excursions you may find the best times sold out. The paid excursions are excellent especially if you like exploring the food and wines of the regions visited. Many excursions focus on these aspects of culture. On board activities and entertainment was good and varied with something for everyone. It ranged from lectures about upcoming regions, an ABBA music revue, Jazz concert, various musicians playing each night. I have already booked another cruise for 2020. Read Less

Viking always is top notch cruise experience. The ship is always in immaculate condition has the most space per passenger I've experienced. You can sit by yourself at dinner if you choose because there's always enough space for everyone to have there own table. The food is excellent and the service staff is very attentive. The accommodations are very comfortable and well appointed. The room has everything you want and is setup in an efficient way. The cabin cleaning staff is excellent and attentive. The food is fantastic, excursions are great and the staff is super helpful/friendly. Entertainment is very good with fantastic shows nightly. The fitness center is good with lots of high tech aerobic machines, dumbbells and cable machines. i would have liked some more free weights, but probably not too safe on a ship.. Highly recommend to travelers who want a excellent all inclusive, relaxing and enriching cruise experience.. Read Less

Fabulous adult oriented cruise without the kids, art auctions, or casino junk. Best cruise we have ever been on. No lines to wait in. The staff was exceptional. We are spoiled and will never go back to the other guys. Some of the moderate rated excursions were a little difficult for us older folks. We would like a few more leasurely easy excursions for some of us that can't walk or stand for 2 hrs or so. The food was so good in the restaurant we did not even go to one of the two specialty restaurants. We really enjoyed the explorers lounge with the live entertainment. Each day after our excursion we cleaned up and relaxed there before dinner. The next time we go we will be sure to use the sauna and cold room as well as the pools. We were not prepared for all this luxury and pampering. Read Less

Had never been to most of the cities, had never cruised the Mediterranean or Adriatic. The brand new ship was marvelous in every way; great amenities, wonderful food, and friendly, helpful staff. Appreciated the changing menus, the locally sourced food items, and the variety of food offerings both in the main dining rooms and in the special restaurants. The on-board lectures and entertainment were top notch. The Port Talks were very helpful, as were the talks on European history. It was wonderful and special to have an astronomer on board and to hear his lectures as well. We appreciated the ship's small collection of books, the comfortable lounge areas, and the swimming pools, spa and gift shops. Given the itinerary, we were prepared for and wanted to experience a "tasting menu" of ports. Even so, a bit more time in some of the ports would have been welcome. This was particularly true in Venice, where it took an hour to get to the morning tour start point, then we had an hour tour, then an hour to get back to the ship, a fifteen minute break, and then an hour ride back to the afternoon tour start point. There must be a way to let morning tourers stay downtown and meet up at a major city location to start the afternoon tours. Except for one location (Naples), the tour guides were engaged, friendly and knowledgeable. The tour guide who took our group to and through the Venice airport was particularly helpful, since that airport is an overcrowded, confusing, disaster. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed being on a Viking riverboat and wanted to try a larger, ocean going Viking ship. It was amazing. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it seemed music was everywhere. The central area seemed to have musicians playing whenever we passed by, but there were great musical shows in the theatre as well. On board was an intimate planetarium with two movies literally surrounding the guests. We enjoyed all three pools, the infinity, the large indoor and the quiet spa pool, and found swimming was a great way to counter the absolutely wonderful food on Board. Every single dish we selected was delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant twice, and next time I will reserve it for even more nights. However, the brightly decorated Norwegian restaurant was the most fun, with limitless lax and other great entrees and desserts. As with the river cruise, we could go on free tours at every stop. We found them well-organized with excellent guides. Even at those ports we had been to in the past, the tours were so educational. We never felt rushed or crowded and were taken to unusual spots, like the most elegant wine-tasting in a noble’s manse. Our room was the nicest one we have ever had on a ship. It was a balcony room with more drawers that we could possibly fill up. But that was good to know, as we can’t wait to go on a longer trip and have made plans to go on the Viking’s Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise in Feb. 2020. Read Less

We had cruised four times with Viking River Cruises so we knew what to expect from Viking. Viking did not let us down!!! The cabins were large with a veranda. Crew was fabulous - definitely up to Viking standards! Dining was extraordinary. Prepared well and the service was fantastic. Of course the included wine with every meal helped the meals go down smoothly! Enertainment was thoroughly enjoyable! Ranged form opera to a flautist to curent musical productions. Fitness room and sauna was exceptional. The 'snow room' in heir sauna aera was unique. It complemented the whirlpool and dry and wet saunas. Excursions at eah port of call were great. Embarkation and debarkation were handled as only Viking can do! Truly exceptional We only vacation with Viking now! Read Less

It had the itinerary I was looking for. My wife always wanted to visit Rome and this cruise allowed for that. The size of the ship and the number of passengers was a big plus. I have been on other cruises that had several thousand people on board and that was too crowded. The fact that the age was restricted to keep small children away. Not having to fight for a spot in the pools or hot tubs was great. With the smaller number of passengers the service felt more personal. The crew was always ther waiting to help and not having to rush because they were keep so busy. The option of selecting where to eat and who to sit with made the dining experience more enjoyable. Not being told what table to sit at was great. Although a bit on the small size the cabin was comfortable and the veranda was a nice experience which I hadn't had before. Read Less

Researched, seemed like it offered more, although pricey. Totally worth every penny! The staff was very professional, well-informed. We have to give great compliments to our main restaurant servers/attendants, Shendy, Hengky, Casper, Gorky, Zharko, Khadafi. I'm sorry, can't recall all, but these definitely stood out in service. The room service was also exceptional. Laundry room good, but needed staff to walk us through process as the signs were difficult to understand. The excursions were outstanding! The tours, guides were the best. We did get lost when my mother had to use the bathroom in Dubrovnik Walking Tour. Would have been nice if the guide waited as it was, I recall, a 4 hour tour, no bathroom break, just pointed to ladies room with long line ahead. Reason why we lost her. Also, cancellation of paid, not included tour policy is not acceptable for those that are unable to do, after previous day's tour. A lot of walking for my 87 year old mother that was too tired the following day to do the paid tour. Had to wait for refund, only if someone on waiting list. Luckily, one person was interested, therefore, we were refunded for the pricey tour excursion.Something that needs correction. All in all, we are going on another cruise in 2019, and 2020. Wouldn't do any other overseas cruise unless it's Viking! Read Less
