We initially chose the cruise because of the itinerary was to places we wanted to visit. We didn't realize until onboard this was the maiden voyage. There were a few hiccups and some things that needed tending to -- as in "we are waiting for the shower door seals to catch up to us." Our cabin was very spacious and there was plenty of room to store all of our clothes and such. The bathroom as well had lots of space and the shower was very roomy. The balcony was spacious and allowed us to sit comfortably at the table and not feel cramped. The only downside was the coffee maker. It was a Nespresso but did not come with the pods. Instead there was instant coffee and tea. That was not the probleml. The problem was there were no clear instructions on how to operate when you don't stick a pod in. I thought I was following the instructions, but sometimes I got hot water and other times not. I am hoping this has been corrected. Dining was terrific. I think we just managed to hit all of the options. It was nice to be waited on and then have the option for burgers, deli or the buffet. Dining al fresco was also nice. Afternoon tea, when onboard, was delightful. There were plenty of activities to keep us busy onboard. Entertainment was great and the places to listen to music were many. The total surprise was the planeterium on board. We went every opportunity we could. The onboard astronomers were very knowledgeable and they were more than willing to share their expertise. They even scheduled extra nights so they could point out new stars/planets in the sky. The "educational" speakers, too, knew their subjects and made what could be a dry subject very entertaining. We tried not to miss them. All of the personnel were friendly and anxious to help you out. Our cabin steward was amazing. Any request, no matter how small, and he was delighted to fulfill them. My daughter used the fitness center and we partook of the spa and other areas. My only complaint was the sauna/hot tub area closed too early. We would have used it more, but time constraints with other activities forced us to choose them over relaxing in the spa. There were lots of excursions, almost too many, I wanted to go on several of them. It was hard to choose. I traveled with my parents and my daughter and all of us agreed it was a great experience. We will definitely be on another Viking cruise in the near future. Read Less

I joined a small group so didn’t choose the cruise or ship but enjoyed the Viking process. There was no line when we boarded and we went to our room after exploring the ship. I like to start a cruise by looking for a quiet apot were I can retreat. We had reservations at Manfredi’s and enjoyed our first Viking meal. The breakfast crowd was overwhelming the first morning but better when I found places to retreat with my first meal of the day. The room was cozy, but well designed. I was disappointed the the included coffee pot didn’t work and asked them to remove it. Beds were confortable and storage space good. Robes, slippers, hair drier and bath amenities were included. The spa area was nice and I enjoyed the Viking sauna, steam and cold water plunge. I went on the last night and they were defrosting the snow room so I didn’t get that experience. The gym looked good but I was more interested in the food, pool, dining and shore excursions, both private and Viking. Aside from the planetarium talks, which were well done, I didn’t participate in enrichment activities. I enjoyed classical music on floors 1 and 7, along with the, mostly, quiet and comfortable lounge spaces. There were books everywhere and enjoyed browsing the collections. This is no party ship and I enjoyed it. Read Less

Our daughter always wanted to go to Italy. We were scheduled to go in December 2017 but the cruise was oversold or something so they rescheduled us and gave us better rooms in the process. Turned out July was a wonderful time to be in the Mediterranean. It was just beautiful. The ship had only been on a couple of cruises since being launched so it seemed brand new. We had been on the Star and loved it but this ship was even better. The technology especially has improved. Our favorite port was St. Tropez and our favorite excursion was there to Port Grimaud. The rose wine in that region was delicious. Dining was varied and easy with whatever type of venue you might want. Our favorite place for a snack or dessert or just lounging is Mamsen's. We had to tender to a couple of the ports and that process went as smoothly as possible. Everything about Viking is professional! Read Less

Excellent cruise. My only problem was the switch in the number of days in Barcelona. We were expecting two days in Barcelona. That was one of the reasons we booked the cruise, to see Barcelona. Then as soon as we paid for the cruise, we were informed that the itinerary has been changed and we would only have one day in Barcelona. No explanation or adjustment from Viking. A little disappointing. I expected better service and communication from Viking on this important itinerary change. We were forced to book additional days at our expense, as a result of the change. The ship was beautiful! The staff was very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent. Lots of items to choose from for meals. Lots of places to eat. Guests need to explore the other locations for meals wile on board besides the dining rooms. Many things things to do on the ship and many excursions off the ship. Read Less

We will never use any other ocean liner than the Viking we loved it far above our expectations!! The staff was helpful every time, food incredible and the staff their we’re superior. The food everywhere on the boat was increadible, fresh and wonderful. Pools were incredible. Boarding and unbarkkng were fast and easy and all transfers were organized and on time always. Activities on the boat were great too. All the service in the boat we can’t say enough good about it. Easy to use washer and dryers like having our own hair dryers in each room. We never used the coffee pots as we loved being out on the ship and eatting and drinking with others it was an incredible journey for sure! Read Less

A friend of mine recommended Viking as a way to visit Italy. I'm so sorry this is the path we chose. Onboard- jr. Penthouse is a fantastic room and clean. Other than that, I am NOT impressed and more than dissatisfied with the service, & ship amenities. The pool is EXTREMELY small, no casino, no evening entertainment (other than various musicians in areas of the ship), restaurant and buffet hours are limited & CLOSE EARLIER THAN HOURS LISTED. The guest services personnel ARE not informed of the various tours available & "waitlist " you if a tour is full. Waitlist means nothing other than you'd like to book it but can't. They have no regard for the traveler with limited time in ports, & do not attempt to assist in alternate arrangements. Having cruised on Princess and Royal Caribbean, and paid half the price; this cruiseline does not compare. This will be my last viking cruise! Read Less

Although we had been to the start and stop sites before several times, the intermediate stops in the Adriatic were new to us and quite interesting. The Orion is a lovely ship...just a few weeks old at our sailing so everything was impeccable. The service was probably the best ever experienced on a cruise, which was surprising given the newness of the vessel and crew. We found the casual dining to be more appealing than the main dining room, given the breadth of choices and the ability to sample many different tastes. Also, we made friends with servers there and made sure to it in their areas whenever possible. The entertainment was generally middling, typical cruise ship fare...although the professor who provided lectures on various topics was quite interesting and the planetarium was very novel and entertaining. Our younger son and his wife joined us for the second week from Venice to Athens and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. The gym/spa area was the best we'd ever seen...loved the ice room and the steam rooms being so adjacent. And the common areas/lounges were quite comfortable, especially the Explorers' Lounge that was just a few steps from our cabin. The best indicator of our pleasure with the Orion is that we are booked for another sailing on it in the Orient in September of 2019...and are planning as well for a 2020 Viking combination river and ocean cruise in Scandinavia. Viking is, in our opinion, simply the best cruise line afloat. Read Less

All of the food was top notch. The only issue was the fact that the Chef's Table had a different menu each night. We do not eat DUCK so we had to cancel. There needs to be more of a selection at the Chef's table. The excursions could have been improved if there were handicap assistance provided off and on the ship. Also the excursions were great but could have been improved if wheelchairs could be made available for the elderly and handicapped. The ship was terrific and the crew for the most part was outstanding with only a few exceptions. I would go on Viking again but I would review the restaurants food service more carefully. As for the wine selection, it was adequate but I would suggest at least provide more of a variety each night and make wine available at all areas of the ship free of charge unless you want a more premium wine. We chose this cruise because my wife's family if Serbian-Croatian and we wanted to visit her ancestor's homeland. The trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The Viking staff; from arrival at Venice airport, to our departure in Athens, could not have been more accommodating and helpful. Seamless transfers to and from the ship are always welcomed; be it the days of embarkation or debarking or the day trips available through Viking. The food; oh my, the food. Spectacular at every meal and every venue whether it was room service breakfast, sit down dinners at the Chefs Table, or (my preference) cruising the buffet at every meal. The Viking staff cannot be surpassed; everyone was courteous and knowledgeable. I have even exchange emails with one of your staff since we have returned home and hope to keep in contact with him in the near future. Thank you Viking for making our experience so memorable. We cannot wait to cruise with you again! Read Less

We were looking for a cruise to the Middle East and had traveled with Viking on a river cruise. Their itinerary most closely matched our plans. The ship, its amenities, the crew were all outstanding. The excursions had a few bumps — it’s a difficult region for problem free visits, and the August weather temperatures were very challenging. The guides were well prepared and knowledgeable; there was a good selection of both included and optional tours, but logistics were complicated. I would have enjoyed more evening entertainment on the ship. The food and restaurants on board were great. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable. The common areas were beautiful and luxurious. I have traveled with other cruise lines and I think Viking is absolutely the best in customer service; every member of the staff was friendly, competent, helpful, and cheerful — all of which contributed to a most memorable experience. I also found not all passengers were treated the same. I think if you socialized with the crew you were treated better. If you spent time later in the evening with then and participated in their games, they greeted you and treated you differently. Because of our age we thought this would be a good way to see Australia. Flight arrangements were terrible, sent us north to go west, long layovers. Food was very good and service excellent. Food in dining room was very good, specialty dining was excellent, World Café could have been better. Excursions could have been better, on some you spent more time on the bus than being able to enjoy the sight you were visiting. We've taken Viking River Cruises and I think the excursions and value for our money was much better. Also I think the crew was more attentive to all. We didn't have as many dining options but were excellent. Read Less

This was our second Viking Cruise. Loved it the first time we cruised with Viking Sea; all went according to what we paid for and what we got. Our Penthouse Junior Suite (PJS 8007) was what we asked for and that was exactly what we got. Based upon this positive experience, we booked a second cruise to New Zealand and Australia. We elected to add a pre-cruise extension in Auckland and love the vitality of the city. The hotel assignment offered comfortable rooms conveniently located to the city's highlights. The cruise lasted about 3 weeks and made all stops as per the itinerary. The ship handled very rough seas fairly well, and the ship's common areas were as advertised on the website. There were many "at sea" days. Meals in the dining venues allowed for decent variety. The restaurants are the same ones on all the ocean ships and, at Manfredi's, we saw the same things on the menu as we'd seen on the Viking Sun. Breakfast in the World Cafe offered a good variety. We saw one or two shows while on board. The Aboriginal show the last night was quite good. Some of the lecturers were outstanding and it was nice to be able to watch them in our room when we were not able to attend the lectures. The crew were helpful and performed their jobs well. There was not enough time in ports to really enjoy the areas. We would have liked more free time. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. The Viking Orion is identical to any of the other Viking Ocean ships which made the entire experience very predictable. Our room was horrible. Our Viking Agent concealed from us that we were assigned one of the two "handicapped' rooms (room 6020) and we only learned about our room assignment until the day before departure. This handicapped room is grossly misrepresented as a Penthouse Junior Suite room. Viking's website contains not so much as one photo for this inadequate room (there are only 2 handicapped cabins on the entire ship). If someone needs wheelchair access, then 6020 or 6021 are the rooms to book. Otherwise, the access to the cabin's deck posed a serious tripping hazard. Furthermore, the room configuration further reduces any usable interior space. Our room had no sitting room (like every other room on the entire ship besides room 6021) and we needed to sit on the bed to watch TV. We needed to bring in the table from the deck whereas all other rooms actually had a coffee table, etc. Viking advertises this "handicapped room" (rooms 6020 and 6021) as consisting of 405 sf. but it is not. We measured the suite and deck; our suite 6020 fell so far short of 405 sq as to make this a case for a serious misrepresentation. The General Manager of our cruise wrote to Viking's head office telling them "we have had complaints with this room in the past" (so Viking had already known about previous problems with these rooms) when we told him about our concerns. He told us Viking would only deal with us when we returned home. Which they did. Just as an aside (and a heads-up), unhappy travelers who decide to settle their claims with Viking are required, by Viking, to sign a non-disclosure agreement with Viking that prohibits us travelers from saying anything negative about Viking or talking about our experiences. Ever. Go through a travel agent. Protect yourself and your investment. Your own personal travel agent is interested in having "you" return as a future customer to whom they will sell future travel business. We also have an official BBB claim in progress against Viking (with photos). Variety is the spice of life. There is little or no variety here. And the more ships Viking adds, the greater is the impact on quality control. One of the two main elevators did not function for the entire duration of our cruise. The main oven in the restaurant did not operate properly one night and the raw fish for dinner was apologized for with free bottles of wine sent to rooms of all those who dined there. The room greatly impacted our ability to enjoy the cruise. Read Less
