To see Australia. Ship and staff were wonderful. Food in all restaurants was exceptional. Loved all the cities we visited. Wish the cruise had been longer. The weather was hot in some areas but was always comfortable aboard the ship. Met many wonderful people and made many friends. Lots of entertainment and activities to keep us busy while out to sea. Very informative information was given before each excursion. Cabins were always clean and well stocked. The ship was handled very well by the crew. We often did not even feel us leave or arrive in ports. Loved that the cruise was all adults. We are already looking for another cruise. Would like to do another ocean cruise but would also like to do a river cruise in Europe. We stayed in Sydney for two days after leaving the ship and feel Sydney is a beautiful city. Would love to visit there again sometime. Read Less

We thought it would be a great trip. This was our 3rd Viking cruise. The first two were very good. This cruise was extremely disappointing. The service was very poor in dining. Sometimes there were no dishes and you had to wait and the cafe wasn't even busy. Dirty dishes piled on the table not removed, lack of beverages served. Some of the employees were miserable; on the other hand some were very nice. It was the miserable ones we had to deal with. I really feel we were discriminated against. The shore excursion manager would not assign us a bus number for our shore excursion although most people were already on the bus waiting for us. Passports were taken away for two and half weeks without an explanation. The excursions in Cambodia were a waste of time. I would not recommend Viking cruises. It was a waste of money, terrible service, and I really believe we were discriminated against. I would not recommend Viking Cruise to anyone, very rude, and expensive, My wife and myself were treated very poorly. I wrote a letter to home office expecting to hear from someone with authority, but I was wrong, I received a phone call from a low level employee, who really did not care. Never Viking again. My husband and I were looking to do something special to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We wanted a memorable event, and particularly a cruise. So we narrowed our choices down to travel to the Galapagos or travel to China. After doing our research it seemed almost a no brainer to choose the Viking cruise with so many excursions included, the quality of the ship and the excellent service and amenities reported by previous travelers. We are avid travelers, but frankly like to stay in 4 or 5 star resorts. So, for us luxury at a good price is important. We've travelled on many other cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival, Princess and MSC. However, this cruise far exceeded our expections in so many ways. We departed out of Beijing and ended in Hong Kong, a 14 day trip. The embarkation process was fairly easy with no surprises. Our luggage arrived very quickly (within 90 minutes of our arrival) which was a far cry from what we've experienced on other cruises. We were greeted by an enthusiastic and very friendly staff. It seemed like everyone anticipated your every need. The crew consistently greeted us wherever we went onboard. The cabin was very comfortable (we were in DV2) which was spacious enough to store luggage and lots of compartments for clothing. The ship was absolutely beautiful with so many places to sit. Everything was in working order at all times. You never felt like there were alot of people around until it was time disembark! The pool deck was cool with the retractable roof. Meals and movies were great here. Speaking of meals, the food was absolutely superb. Loved the idea that you could making dining reservations at the restaurants in advance and that they were included in your cruise price. I think that was the best thing about the cruise, you didn't feel like you were nickled and dimed about everything. Most everything was included. Excursions were terrific and the guides were superb. We did so many tours and learned so much by the resident docents. All in all, this was one of the best vacations we've ever been on. We definitely look forward to our next Viking cruise once we are empty nesters! Read Less

With daughter and son-in-law to celebrate birthdays and anniversary. Daughter has serious food issues, and the crew took fabulous care of her. The food is good, especially liked the buffets. The chef made several beautiful chocolate cakes for us. The ship is beautiful, and different from other ships we have been on. We loved our cabin, a penthouse suite. Loved the double sinks and large shower. The bed was wonderful. Enjoyed the planetarium shows, a unique feature. Enjoyed the shore excursions, but especially enjoyed sitting and reading in the afternoons. Since the was an inland passage crude, the view were wonderful. The onboard lectures were always top notch and very interesting and informative. ON the minus side, one night our Halibut was way over cooked, but that was just one occasion. The embarkation could not have been smoother. We also loved the public entertainment - very talented people. We would definitely sail again with Viking. PS loved the bird sounds in public bathrooms. Food is great. Boat is beautiful and so clean. Already booked another cruise. Can fit luggage under bed. Has more drawer space. Loved our balcony. Do the helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier and dog sledding. Loved the train ride and the excursion on the Deadliest sea boat. Manifred I had excellent steaks. Loved not always having announcements, no children, and older crowd. This was our 2nd cruise with Viking. The spa is wonderful. The pools excellent. Bar service is above all other. Entertainment could be a little better. Love having wine, beer, soft drinks included. And being able to stay pre or post at beginning and end ports. Airfare is great. Top of the line in cruises as far as I am concerned. Read Less

We joined my brother Mike Martin, his wife Sherry on this cruise. My brother had wanted to sail the Inside Passage on an Alaskan cruise. My husband and I had cruised to Alaska on two other occasions but enjoyed it so much that we were glad to go again. The embarkation went smoothly. I was glad we didn't have to wait to board ship when we arrived at the dock. For desembarkation I suggest that passengers be made aware that they can wait onboard until their color group is called My cabin review is below. Our dining experience was excellent due to the expertise of the kitchen staff. The consistently provided us delicious meals. The wait staff were always very friendly and attentive to our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed the Orion Vocalists performances, especially the ABBA Songbook and the Beatles Songbook. We also very much enjoyed the Viking Classical Duo performance of Movie Magic. We enjoyed our shore excursions especially the Kenai Fjords by boat near Seward, the Columbia Glacier Cruise near Valdez and the Potlach Totem Park near Ketchikan. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with my wife's sister and her husband. We had a double wedding ceremony so wanted to do something together that would be very special, a once in a life time experience. Viking Ocean cruises fulfilled that experience. Every stateroom had a balcony with an unobstructed view. A great place to have a glass of wine together and enjoy the wonderful views. Meals were just as wonderful. You were presented with an unlimited number of choices and each was delicious as the next. The specially restaurants were even better and did not cost any extra. Beer or wine were free at lunch and dinner. The lounge areas were beautiful as was the live music every evening. The staff were great and greeted you with a smile and by name. We took advantage of included and optional excursions that gave us the trip of a life time. We saw eagles, puffins, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, seals, seal rookery, brown and black bears, glaciers, a calving glacier and absolutely beautiful scenery. If you want the best experience, choose Viking and enjoy every minute! Read Less

My husband and daughter always wanted to go to Alaska. Chose Viking because we had a previous trip with them from Amsterdam to Budapest which was awesome. Small ship, great service and beautiful sites. Already booked this May 2020 for Homelands Trip. Customer service was excellent and provided us with updates on our luggage which was lost on airlines. Meals were excellent with a variety to choose from and coffee bar available throughout the day. Explorers lounge had a wonderful view and service was outstanding Cabins were cleaned twice a day and Daily bulletin was delivered every night. Morning Room Service was delivered on time each morning with a hot cup of coffee and whatever we ordered the previous night. Highly recommend Viking Cruises and would not travel anyt other way. Beautiful ship, clean with excellent staff of people. Great rooms with excellent views from balcony and easy access on board ship. Read Less

We have had four Viking cruises so far, with a fifth on the horizon. It’s an adult-level cruise and they treat their guests accordingly. The operation of the vessel was seamless - the passengers never had to worry about any of the details, they just showed up. Meals were perfectly handled. Some cruise lines like to make people sit around big tables so you “can enjoy the company of others”, whereas Viking has tables-for-two where it’s your choice to engage with people at the next table or not. Funnily enough, our favorite food item was the European-style bread - vastly superior to North American bread. There was no nickel-and-diming on Viking cruises. The included self-serve laundry, the wine/beer, Internet, each not expensive but it raises a tiny bit of guilt on other cruise lines - on Viking we just get to enjoy the cruise. We traveled with a group of 20, mostly relatives, and saw them only when we wanted to, our choice. Shore trips were well-vetted before Viking guests landed. All were well done. I’m still working through the hundreds of photographs I was able to take on shore excursions and each one brings back happy memories. Cabins were perfectly done. Clean, modern, very functional. There was no need for a fancy suite for our purposes because we primarily just used them to sleep - we were out and about most of the time. (Not for this cruise, but the Viking Sky cruised by Mt. Stromboli, an active volcano north of Sicily, just in time to see a major eruption in the dark of the evening. Well planned, Viking!) Read Less

I lived in Alaska as a child so I was super excited to go back and see it as an adult. I have sailed with Viking 7 times before the Alaskan cruise and absolutely love what Viking has to offer. After we arrived in Anchorage, we had a two hour bus trip to Seward. The views were amazing! My luggage was already in the room waiting for me as I used the Luggage Forward company. As always the food was delicious and since we were in Alaska, we had crabs and lobster and fish available frequently. My friend and I met two other couples at the bar and therefore ended eating a lot in the pool cafe and the casual restaurants. We had chosen great excursions such as whale watching, riding in various zodiacs, taking the train up the mountains and several catamarans to see the glaciers and whales, seals, and birds. I found the towns at the various ports quite delightful with plenty of shopping after our excursions. One night it was so foggy, you couldn't see out of the front window at the main bar. All night long you could hear the Orion's foghorn to ensure safe passage. The entertainment consisted of young performers singing and dancing but they were fun to watch. I hated for the cruise to end because we had made such good friends onboard and I wanted to see more. The disembarkation was not much fun since there were at least 5 cruise ships also there. The airport was packed. It took 2 hours to get through United etc. but when we finally got through I saw the sign that said "Welcome to the United States" and I pulled out my Global Entry card and was through in 2 minutes. I am seriously thinking about taking the cruise again with different excursions. The ambiance of the Orion is special. The spa with the pool, cold bucket of water dump, the snow room were so much fun. To sit in a room where it snows on you and then to hop in a warm pool was exhilarating. Around the spa are several shops where I bought a beautiful rain jacket and travel backpack. Also on this floor is a baby grand piano where a young man would play at different times during the day. We would get a tasty drink at the bar there and sit and listen to him almost every evening. The tearoom was packed during "high tea" every day at 4. They served delicious teas and sandwiches with many sweet macaroons and cakes while we sit and meet so many new people. Service on the Orion was fantastic. They always have a smile on their face and are so willing to help you. The bartenders can make any drink you want and love to talk with you. I love sitting at the main bar at the front of the ship as you sail towards the next destination. But all of us who ended up hanging around together felt the Bloody Marys at the bar on the first floor were the best!! Read Less

This was our second Viking Cruise. Loved it the first time we cruised with Viking Sea; all went according to what we paid for and what we got. Our Penthouse Junior Suite (PJS 8007) was what we asked for and that was exactly what we got. Based upon this positive experience, we booked a second cruise to New Zealand and Australia. We elected to add a pre-cruise extension in Auckland and love the vitality of the city. The hotel assignment offered comfortable rooms conveniently located to the city's highlights. The cruise lasted about 3 weeks and made all stops as per the itinerary. The ship handled very rough seas fairly well, and the ship's common areas were as advertised on the website. There were many "at sea" days. Meals in the dining venues allowed for decent variety. The restaurants are the same ones on all the ocean ships and, at Manfredi's, we saw the same things on the menu as we'd seen on the Viking Sun. Breakfast in the World Cafe offered a good variety. We saw one or two shows while on board. The Aboriginal show the last night was quite good. Some of the lecturers were outstanding and it was nice to be able to watch them in our room when we were not able to attend the lectures. The crew were helpful and performed their jobs well. There was not enough time in ports to really enjoy the areas. We would have liked more free time. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. The Viking Orion is identical to any of the other Viking Ocean ships which made the entire experience very predictable. Our room was horrible. Our Viking Agent concealed from us that we were assigned one of the two "handicapped' rooms (room 6020) and we only learned about our room assignment until the day before departure. This handicapped room is grossly misrepresented as a Penthouse Junior Suite room. Viking's website contains not so much as one photo for this inadequate room (there are only 2 handicapped cabins on the entire ship). If someone needs wheelchair access, then 6020 or 6021 are the rooms to book. Otherwise, the access to the cabin's deck posed a serious tripping hazard. Furthermore, the room configuration further reduces any usable interior space. Our room had no sitting room (like every other room on the entire ship besides room 6021) and we needed to sit on the bed to watch TV. We needed to bring in the table from the deck whereas all other rooms actually had a coffee table, etc. Viking advertises this "handicapped room" (rooms 6020 and 6021) as consisting of 405 sf. but it is not. We measured the suite and deck; our suite 6020 fell so far short of 405 sq as to make this a case for a serious misrepresentation. The General Manager of our cruise wrote to Viking's head office telling them "we have had complaints with this room in the past" (so Viking had already known about previous problems with these rooms) when we told him about our concerns. He told us Viking would only deal with us when we returned home. Which they did. Just as an aside (and a heads-up), unhappy travelers who decide to settle their claims with Viking are required, by Viking, to sign a non-disclosure agreement with Viking that prohibits us travelers from saying anything negative about Viking or talking about our experiences. Ever. Go through a travel agent. Protect yourself and your investment. Your own personal travel agent is interested in having "you" return as a future customer to whom they will sell future travel business. We also have an official BBB claim in progress against Viking (with photos). Variety is the spice of life. There is little or no variety here. And the more ships Viking adds, the greater is the impact on quality control. One of the two main elevators did not function for the entire duration of our cruise. The main oven in the restaurant did not operate properly one night and the raw fish for dinner was apologized for with free bottles of wine sent to rooms of all those who dined there. The room greatly impacted our ability to enjoy the cruise. Read Less

I also found not all passengers were treated the same. I think if you socialized with the crew you were treated better. If you spent time later in the evening with then and participated in their games, they greeted you and treated you differently. Because of our age we thought this would be a good way to see Australia. Flight arrangements were terrible, sent us north to go west, long layovers. Food was very good and service excellent. Food in dining room was very good, specialty dining was excellent, World Café could have been better. Excursions could have been better, on some you spent more time on the bus than being able to enjoy the sight you were visiting. We've taken Viking River Cruises and I think the excursions and value for our money was much better. Also I think the crew was more attentive to all. We didn't have as many dining options but were excellent. Read Less

We were looking for a cruise to the Middle East and had traveled with Viking on a river cruise. Their itinerary most closely matched our plans. The ship, its amenities, the crew were all outstanding. The excursions had a few bumps — it’s a difficult region for problem free visits, and the August weather temperatures were very challenging. The guides were well prepared and knowledgeable; there was a good selection of both included and optional tours, but logistics were complicated. I would have enjoyed more evening entertainment on the ship. The food and restaurants on board were great. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable. The common areas were beautiful and luxurious. I have traveled with other cruise lines and I think Viking is absolutely the best in customer service; every member of the staff was friendly, competent, helpful, and cheerful — all of which contributed to a most memorable experience. There needs to be more of a selection at the Chef's table. The excursions could have been improved if there were handicap assistance provided off and on the ship. Also the excursions were great but could have been improved if wheelchairs could be made available for the elderly and handicapped. The ship was terrific and the crew for the most part was outstanding with only a few exceptions. I would go on Viking again but I would review the restaurants food service more carefully. As for the wine selection, it was adequate but I would suggest at least provide more of a variety each night and make wine available at all areas of the ship free of charge unless you want a more premium wine. We chose this cruise because my wife's family if Serbian-Croatian and we wanted to visit her ancestor's homeland. The trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The Viking staff; from arrival at Venice airport, to our departure in Athens, could not have been more accommodating and helpful. Seamless transfers to and from the ship are always welcomed; be it the days of embarkation or debarking or the day trips available through Viking. The food; oh my, the food. Spectacular at every meal and every venue whether it was room service breakfast, sit down dinners at the Chefs Table, or (my preference) cruising the buffet at every meal. The Viking staff cannot be surpassed; everyone was courteous and knowledgeable. I have even exchange emails with one of your staff since we have returned home and hope to keep in contact with him in the near future. Thank you Viking for making our experience so memorable. A friend of mine recommended Viking as a way to visit Italy. I'm so sorry this is the path we chose. Onboard- jr. Penthouse is a fantastic room and clean. Other than that, I am NOT impressed and more than dissatisfied with the service, & ship amenities. The pool is EXTREMELY small, no casino, no evening entertainment (other than various musicians in areas of the ship), restaurant and buffet hours are limited & CLOSE EARLIER THAN HOURS LISTED. The guest services personnel ARE not informed of the various tours available & "waitlist " you if a tour is full. Waitlist means nothing other than you'd like to book it but can't. They have no regard for the traveler with limited time in ports, & do not attempt to assist in alternate arrangements. Having cruised on Princess and Royal Caribbean, and paid half the price; this cruiseline does not compare. This will be my last viking cruise! Read Less

Although we had been to the start and stop sites before several times, the intermediate stops in the Adriatic were new to us and quite interesting. The Orion is a lovely ship...just a few weeks old at our sailing so everything was impeccable. The service was probably the best ever experienced on a cruise, which was surprising given the newness of the vessel and crew. We found the casual dining to be more appealing than the main dining room, given the breadth of choices and the ability to sample many different tastes. Also, we made friends with servers there and made sure to it in their areas whenever possible. The entertainment was generally middling, typical cruise ship fare...although the professor who provided lectures on various topics was quite interesting and the planetarium was very novel and entertaining. Our younger son and his wife joined us for the second week from Venice to Athens and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. The gym/spa area was the best we'd ever seen...loved the ice room and the steam rooms being so adjacent. And the common areas/lounges were quite comfortable, especially the Explorers' Lounge that was just a few steps from our cabin. The best indicator of our pleasure with the Orion is that we are booked for another sailing on it in the Orient in September of 2019...and are planning as well for a 2020 Viking combination river and ocean cruise in Scandinavia. Viking is, in our opinion, simply the best cruise line afloat. Read Less

Our daughter always wanted to go to Italy. We were scheduled to go in December 2017 but the cruise was oversold or something so they rescheduled us and gave us better rooms in the process. Turned out July was a wonderful time to be in the Mediterranean. It was just beautiful. The ship had only been on a couple of cruises since being launched so it seemed brand new. We had been on the Star and loved it but this ship was even better. The technology especially has improved. Our favorite port was St. Tropez and our favorite excursion was there to Port Grimaud. The rose wine in that region was delicious. Dining was varied and easy with whatever type of venue you might want. Our favorite place for a snack or dessert or just lounging is Mamsen's. I joined a small group so didn’t choose the cruise or ship but enjoyed the Viking process. There was no line when we boarded and we went to our room after exploring the ship. I like to start a cruise by looking for a quiet apot were I can retreat. We had reservations at Manfredi’s and enjoyed our first Viking meal. The breakfast crowd was overwhelming the first morning but better when I found places to retreat with my first meal of the day. The room was cozy, but well designed. I was disappointed the the included coffee pot didn’t work and asked them to remove it. Beds were confortable and storage space good. Robes, slippers, hair drier and bath amenities were included. The spa area was nice and I enjoyed the Viking sauna, steam and cold water plunge. I went on the last night and they were defrosting the snow room so I didn’t get that experience. The gym looked good but I was more interested in the food, pool, dining and shore excursions, both private and Viking. Aside from the planetarium talks, which were well done, I didn’t participate in enrichment activities. I enjoyed classical music on floors 1 and 7, along with the, mostly, quiet and comfortable lounge spaces. There were books everywhere and enjoyed browsing the collections. We initially chose the cruise because of the itinerary was to places we wanted to visit. We didn't realize until onboard this was the maiden voyage. There were a few hiccups and some things that needed tending to -- as in "we are waiting for the shower door seals to catch up to us." Our cabin was very spacious and there was plenty of room to store all of our clothes and such. The bathroom as well had lots of space and the shower was very roomy. The balcony was spacious and allowed us to sit comfortably at the table and not feel cramped. The only downside was the coffee maker. It was a Nespresso but did not come with the pods. Instead there was instant coffee and tea. That was not the probleml. The problem was there were no clear instructions on how to operate when you don't stick a pod in. I thought I was following the instructions, but sometimes I got hot water and other times not. I am hoping this has been corrected. Dining was terrific. I think we just managed to hit all of the options. It was nice to be waited on and then have the option for burgers, deli or the buffet. Dining al fresco was also nice. Afternoon tea, when onboard, was delightful. There were plenty of activities to keep us busy onboard. Entertainment was great and the places to listen to music were many. The total surprise was the planeterium on board. We went every opportunity we could. The onboard astronomers were very knowledgeable and they were more than willing to share their expertise. They even scheduled extra nights so they could point out new stars/planets in the sky. The "educational" speakers, too, knew their subjects and made what could be a dry subject very entertaining. We tried not to miss them. All of the personnel were friendly and anxious to help you out. Our cabin steward was amazing. Any request, no matter how small, and he was delighted to fulfill them. My daughter used the fitness center and we partook of the spa and other areas. My only complaint was the sauna/hot tub area closed too early. We would have used it more, but time constraints with other activities forced us to choose them over relaxing in the spa. There were lots of excursions, almost too many, I wanted to go on several of them. It was hard to choose. I traveled with my parents and my daughter and all of us agreed it was a great experience. We will definitely be on another Viking cruise in the near future. Read Less
