Went on the cruise to learn more about Provence. On the shore excursions enjoyed some of the small villages and talks about pdroducing essential oil of lavender and producing of wine in Burgundy. We were fortunate with the weather since it was originally hot and then a cold front for the rest of the trip. Learn a great deal about the history of the region, including influence of Greeks, Romans Lombards and religious wars. Some beautiful churches and cathedrals was also a highlight. Unfortunately did not learn much French but am a slow learner of languages. It was nice that we covered very modest distances so could spend so much time ashore. Used the sun deck, including the jogging path to try to keep in shape. The food was delicious and service superb. Out room steward, Bogdan, was one of the best we have had and we have taken quite a few cruises. All in all a great trip. Read Less

I have traveled other European rivers with Viking, but had never been on the Elbe so was eager to return to Prague and head north to Berlin on the Elbe. The boat was great, the good was excellent (and plentiful), the tour director was amazing, and the weather mostly cooperated. The stop in Litomerice was a disappointment and I would have liked to have had more time in Meissen, but other than those 2 changes, the tour was excellent. We didn't really see Melnik, because we arrived late in the afternoon to board the boat, so that might be another small change to make. The Elbe reminds me of a wide English midlands canal (Mersey, Fradley, or Coventry) in that the water was calm and very pastoral, with cows, sheep, and a few horses coming down the to the river banks to graze and drink from the river. The Saxon-Switzerland area was just the opposite, with soaring rock cliffs climbing up from the Elbe. Touring the Bastei cliffs and bridges was amazing and provided great views of the Elbe far down below. Amazing! Prague is a magnificent city - a favorite place to visit. I was delighted to have a reason to return there! Do spend extra time there if you can. The service, as usual, was flawless. I feel bad marking it below the top ranking, but feel I must because of the wording of the question: was the service above your expectations. Viking always delivers such excellent service that my expectations are set very high - so they "met my expectations", but they have spoiled me on prior trips! The cabin was very comfortable and spacious enough for 2 people; however, I must add that we had one of the 2 biggest cabins on the boat, so my comments are about that cabin. It was well-designed and perfectly cleaned every day. The boat had convertible glass walls, so they could be opened when the weather was very nice. They even had a barbecue on board, and we had a BBQ one day. What fun! We love river cruises - being able to start in one city/town and then visit lots of other interesting places during the river cruises and winding up in another interesting place, having to unpack and then pack only once! Viking does a superb job, and listens to their passengers. This was my 5th or 6th trip with them, and I will go with them again - perhaps in Portugal next time... --- and, oh, there wasn't a "dud" of a passenger on our boat. All passengers were pleasant, interesting, and delightful to get to know - and extra plus, for sure. Read Less

We chose this cruise specifically for the itinerary and it was the third time we have taken this particular cruise. The crew is always helpful and the staff go out of their way to make sure everyone has a good time. We took a couple of complimentary tours and chose additional tours which went to places we had not seen before. We enjoyed all of them. The food was wonderful and we always enjoy the complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner. We also really enjoyed the lounge and piano player. There was always something going on in the lounge where you could participate or just watch. When boarding in Amsterdam, we did not have to wait long to get into our room and they upgraded our room to a French balcony which was a great surprise. We loved it. Leaving the ship was also easy. They let us know the time we would be called; we identified our luggage and got on the bus. It all went very smoothly thanks to the staff person who went with us right into the airport to make sure we had no problems. Read Less

My wife and I had done Viking's "Romantic Danube River Cruise" from Budapest to Nuremberg in November, 2011, and the "Rhine River Getaway Cruise" from Basel to Amsterdam in November 2012. We thoroughly enjoyed both cruises- the sights, the shore options, the great food, and outstanding professionalism of the crew. We were treated as if we were royalty! The weather that time of year, though, left a little to be desired. So we thought we'd like to do the same thing, but at a different time of year. Viking's "Grand European Tour" gave us that opportunity. We sailed from Amsterdam up the Rhine River, then across the Main River/Canal in Germany (a new experience), and then down the Danube to Budapest. While many of the sights we saw were the same, there were some new ones. Besides, spending two nights in Vienna can never get too old, or seeing the magnificence of the Melk Abbey was worth it. And we got to experience the Middle Rhine and Wachau Valley part of the river cruise in sunshine instead of clouds and fog. I know Viking can't do anything about the weather, but cruising in the spring proved to be worth it. We had a great time experiencing the trip with our brother-in-law and his wife, but made many new friends (an easy thing to do on any cruise). We really like the 14 day length of the trip; it didn't feel like we had just boarded the ship and had to pack up to leave. A great itinerary! We'd highly recommend this tour and any of the Viking cruises- we've also done the Seine River Cruise from Paris to Rouen/Normandy and back, and the Viking Homelands Ocean Cruise from Stockholm to Bergin. We've been so satisfied with Viking, that we're signed up to take the "Elegant Elbe" River Cruise from Prague to Berlin next spring. Our fifth Viking cruise. And I'm sure there will be many more. Enjoy! Read Less
