We picked this cruise line based on reviews and reputation. We picked this cruise for the its itinerary and excursions. Viking missed the mark all too often, then when they had the opportunity to offer some accommodation for their error - chose to pour gasoline on the fire. Save your money and your sanity - sail another cruise line. I will acknowledge that the ship is lovely, but that is where the good news both starts and end. Our bed was like concrete and the towels were worn. The sheets were heavenly. Finally after a week, they had added enough mattress toppers and foam that we could sleep with waking up with aches and pains everywhere. Our pre-cruise extension to Victoria Falls, advertised as 4 days/3 nights was really 2 days as 2 days were spent in airports and on planes. The specifics of the travel arrangements were not disclosed until we arrived at our Johannesburg hotel. The transfers were to include all portage, yet we had to manhandle our luggage from the airport carousel to the bus for transfer to the ship. Daily activities: This cruise was 50% sea days. Normally, I am fine with that. But, this ship had very little to do day-to-day. There was one 30 minute exercise class at 8AM - go figure. Or you could sit with the knitting instructor for 2 hours in the morning, then repeat in the afternoon. Or you could make dolls from wood spools. If you played bridge - have at it for 3 or 4 hours a day, Repeat on every sea day! The food: Well, the starting ingredients are high quality. But the preparation is bland, tasteless and insanely inconsistent. The Chef's Table served tasty, hot food. But the main dining room, Manfredi's and World Café all failed on both those counts. We ordered the gnocchi at Manfredi's 4 time and it was different every time, proving that the kitchen didn't care about consistency or quality. And what should have been light, fluffy potato-based pillows where instead dense, lead pellets - they went back. Hot food was almost never served hot and we eventually gave up and simply ate from the cold tables. We spoke to all levels of kitchen and restaurant staff, each listened intently and empathetically and yet over 28 days - NOTHING CHANGED. If you have dietary restrictions, specifically Celiac disease, you will be hard pressed to stay healthy. We travelled with several people afflicted with this disease and can testify to the facts that wait staff and sometimes kitchen staff could not accurately provide ingredient information and no one took care to prevent cross contamination of gluten-free items as serving utensils were moved from platter to platter by uninformed passengers and crew. Excursions: This is where Viking really blew it. There was a nice selection of optional excursions including many opportunities to see the native animals of Africa, which frankly is the only reason we picked this itinerary. I spoke at length to the Viking representative about the tours and pricing prior to booking the trip. Unfortunately, every one of those excursions was sold out long before we were able to book any excursions, getting a waiting list was a challenge for us and Viking told my travel agent that there were no wait lists - which turned out to be a lie. Our segment was the last one of World Cruise and even all of them didn't get the excursions they wanted. Viking's response - a sharp stick in the eye and a terse "take the included excursion". Well, excuse me, but no one flies half way around the world and spends their hard earned money to sit on dirty buses, ride around filthy cities and look at buildings whose better days were decades ago. That Viking responded in that way illustrates a basic lack of customer service skills and no understanding of their customer base. In talking to on ship personnel who bore the brunt of wide spread discontent, there were approximately110 slots for safari and safari-like excursions across all African ports for 950 passengers. Really, Viking thought it reasonable to have capacity for just over 10% of passengers?? On cruises with Crystal, Regent and Oceania, we were rarely locked out of an excursion or suffered through a bad meal. For Viking this was the norm and at this class of service it is simply unacceptable. IN SUMMARY, SPEND YOUR MONEY WITH A CRUISE LINE THAT UNDERSTANDS AND VALUES YOU AS A CLIENT. Read Less

We just returned from "Along Africa's Western Shore" where we found ourselves joining (unwittingly!!) the last 4 weeks of a World Cruise, with a major impact on our experience! I have looked at many negative reviews of this cruise on cruise critic and I can assure everyone that they are all true!! This is a lengthy review but it's only a summary of the key issues we faced.: there is much more I could say! Although elements of our experience were first class, there were issues with the management of the cruise that fell very short of our expectations. The ship we sailed on, Viking Sun, is beautiful and the crew are excellent. The service experience on board is first class. Our issues mainly relate to the arrangement and subsequent management of the cruise itself. The cruise was not marketed to us as the final leg of a world cruise, which is very significant. We did not appreciate this at all until late in the booking process. Initially this meant that we were unable to book the excursions we would have liked, as all the really exciting ones were long since fully booked when we were allowed access!! It also meant that we found ourselves joining a cruise where most passengers were already starting to look forward to leaving when we got on board; where aspects of the passenger experience had become a bit stale; and where many passengers were very set in their routines and relationships (with other passengers, with the crew and with the cruise director, who barely acknowledged guests who were not ‘world cruisers’). A further issue in relation to the marketing of the cruise was the number of sea days, which was hidden in the correspondence. To exacerbate this, we then experienced additional sea days due to missing calls into Luderitz and Casablanca (see later) making a total of 16 sea days out of 28 days on the cruise - that's 60% of the time and nearly twice what we expected. Whilst it’s very nice to be on the ship, we did not expect to be sat around it quite as much as this! I laugh at the current Viking radio ads talking about how they spend ‘more time in port and less on the ship’! To expand on the on-board experience, many passengers exhibited a 'sense of entitlement' above those passengers joining in Durban for the final leg. Additionally the daily activities were really focused on an elderly American world cruise audience and we expected a far better on-board schedule. The daily schedule always included 3 sessions of bridge, 3 sessions with knitting or crafting, and several other 'non-events' that were all for the world cruisers. This is very poor: well below our expectations, and what we have experienced elsewhere. The cruise itinerary looked good when we booked, but it was only really the time in South Africa that met our expectations. There were issues all along after leaving S Africa: we were unable to land in Luderitz due to slightly rough seas; Walvis Bay was OK but there really isn't much to see there at all; in Dakar, Senegal we were told it was perfectly OK to take the shuttle bus into town, so that's what we chose to do. This could not have been further from the truth. A frightening experience!; Santa Cruz, Tenerife is a nice place but we managed to dock there on a holiday when 99% of shops were closed; Casablanca. Well what can I say! The Captain chose not to travel here due to a potential storm in the Bay of Biscay a few days later and he wanted to travel through the bay ahead of the storm. Whilst I understand this, in fact the risk appeared quite low and, as far as I could ascertain, the storm moved far to the north west by the time we would have travelled through the bay. This seemed to be an extraordinary and extremely ‘risk averse’ decision. In place of Casablanca the on-board team added Portsmouth into the itinerary!!! This caused ructions on board and I am not surprised. I truly suspect this decision was a 'lazy' one based around the fact that Viking Sun uses this port of call anyway, so it was easy to arrange a tour schedule, and because it was no doubt easy to find a berth in such a large port. Further, when we challenged this decision on board, there was a sense that the entertainment staff felt it would appeal to the largely US passenger base. But for the British passengers on board this was a poor decision again. We live around 90 minutes from Portsmouth and have been there many times: why would we go there on a cruise? We almost decided to leave the ship in Portsmouth and I believe some Brits did so. The outcome of the above change is that, as well as missing out a key port on the cruise, we then ended up with nearly 2 full days of excess time to 'lose' in the English Channel before the ship was due into Greenwich. At times we were barely moving. There are so many ports we could have called at along the French coast - in fact we could have easily managed 2 ports of call north of the Bay of Biscay in the time we had available. This would have taken a lot more work to arrange of course, but vastly improved the cruise experience! So, we spent the last 5 days of our cruise travelling only a few hundred miles, very close to the UK! Summarising the itinerary overall, the time in South Africa was great, but the rest of the Western Africa experience was a big let-down and for about the last 10 days of our cruise it felt like the ship was operating a ‘close down’ routine. We loved the ship and the core Viking experience, but we did not receive what we expected. As a British passenger on this cruise we were definitely second-class citizens overall, which is not what you expect at this huge cost! I am a few weeks from our return home when posting this note. That’s because I took the trouble to write directly to Mr Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises, because I felt there were a large number of issues that the company should be aware of in planning future cruises. Having taken the time to write personally to an executive of the company (at the US head-quarters) I did not expect to receive a letter from a customer services agent a full month later. The response made light of the very serious concerns that we raised, IGNORED the key issues, and had the audacity at one point to refer to ‘force majeure’. I wrote again the chairman and, a few weeks later, received a further letter from customer services basically telling me to go away! Viking cruises have an astounding inability to listen and respond the like I have not come across with any other company. They are not listening to their customers and will thus not achieve their very high ambitions for the business! Responding to concerns should not be an exercise in ‘customer relations speak’: it’s an opportunity to turn a concerned customer into a real advocate, but right now they have succeeded in creating a significant detractor. The main idea of my post is that I strongly recommend you to refrain from taking Viking Cruises. I was dreaming of a round-the-world cruise and decided to a 3-month journey with Viking Cruises. It turned out into a total disappointment. Beautiful website descriptions and vivid manager speeches have nothing to do with reality. I have huge experience in sea journeys and have traveled with almost all well-known companies, thus I have a lot to compare with. Personnel qualification level is very low and does not correspond with the one declared by the company. The crew is occasionally rude and careless. Throughout the whole journey I felt discriminated against basing on age and nationality. From my personal observations, the company focuses its services on aged clients but there is nothing to learn this information from and managers will not inform you about that. The quality and variety of meals is very poor: the menu barely differs from day to day and it’s not tasty at all. Meal courses are mean and thrifty, quality of service is very very low. Here’s an example, we were given an apple (a single one) and were constantly stared at, harassing us and signaling us to leave. Here’s my story: My acquaintance with company started with my personal manager almost ignoring me shortly after I purchased the voyage. Later on, he totally disappeared. It turned out occasionally that he quit the company and forgot to hand over me to another manager. It was almost impossible to verify the status of my special requests before the start of the journey. And that’s what they call and individual approach to every client. The first day on board ended up with room service team breaking all the buttons on my new suit, which was quite expensive and purchased exactly for the trip. My friend faced the same situation. The only thing offered to us as compensation was to attach black buttons used for the crew uniform. As soon as we boarded, we informed guest service about food allergy. Despite this, kitchen crew ignored this information and served dishes with products we are allergic to during 2 months of our journey. Guest service never intervened and helped us, we were able to fix the situation only after a huge argument. Soon after leaving South America, the entire ship was left without internet. Guest service managers made up various excuses: something broke down, no signal and many else. The connection was restored only at French Polynesia islands. This information was published in daily bulletin along with new excuses for the situation. Be aware that cafe waiters are very tardy and lazy. You may spend an hour or two waiting for your order to be cooked. The guest service explained the situation in a way that cruise focuses on elderly customers and thus everything is done slowly on purpose for the convenience of aged people. That is a real problem, instead of making the crew work faster the guest service justifies their lack of action. Moreover, the waiters behave themselves very unfriendly. Another serious problem faced throughout the whole journey - dirty dishes and cutlery, in all of the ship’s restaurants and room service as well. Dirty spots and leftovers from previous clients were noticed on a daily basis. Waiters never reacted to this situation! After contacting officers, the only answer received from them was an explanation of the factors that may lead to these leftovers not being completely washed off. This is not the information that I am willing to receive as a guest. I require proper service, not the explanation why the dishes are dirty. Sanitary conditions were a very serious issue, so keep this in mind while booking a cruise. Be extremely careful while ordering chicken eggs during trips on Viking ships. It was a common issue to receive dirty eggs for breakfast while ordering room service. There were several occasions when eggs were messed up in something black or had feathers stick to it and something else, supposedly feces. Multiple complaints to guest service ended up in nothing, Ana, the manager, set it off and stated that she doesn’t know whose fault it was. Fish dishes were of low quality, the fish itself was literally old and tough, absolutely impossible to eat. It felt like fish was frozen several times killing all the taste and flavor. I faced certain problems with Australian visa. Officer pretended he was helping me. I was made to pay for new visa with no guarantees for success, and I felt that Officer wanted me and my friend leave the ship. We got lucky that my friend found a way to solve the problem and Officer had nothing to say against us. Discrimination was also present during this journey. Me and my friend felt being discriminated against every time we went for dinner. Waiters were extremely friendly and gallant with Americans and blatantly ignored other guests. Furthermore, we faced negligent attitude as we were the youngest on board. Discrimination against nationality and age is present and it is unacceptable for international company! Shame on Viking company. The entire crew of Viking’s ship turned our journey into a nightmare with constant problems arising due to their actions or inaction, and nobody except us tried to solve those issues. Financial issues are not properly solved by the personnel. As the journey started, I was told that residuals on my on board account will be refunded at the end of the cruise. The day before the journey ends, I was told that residual funds will be sent to my credit card. Two weeks later I discovered the fact that residual money will be sent to me in check via mail services. This is a total incompetence of the crew and purposely misleading. I’d also like to pay your attention to the uniqueness of cruises declared by Viking company. Small ships used for Viking’s voyages should be able to visit unique ports as it’s claimed by the company. This is a trickery. During our 3-month trip the ship often made stops far from main city ports forcing the passengers to spend 50-60 minutes each way to reach the cities. There were several occasions when the stops were made in absolutely uninteresting and empty ports. The way Viking company contacts its clients after the trip requires special description. All my inquiries are being ignored and none of my e-mails were replied. Official complaint took very long time to be replied and in the end the only thing Mr Cohen could offer me was a 250$ refund for the spoilt 3 months or discount voucher for further cruise. This sounds like mocking rather than serious approach to problem management. I encourage all readers and those who traveled with Viking to write reviews and leave comments on things thaw went wrong during your trip! Currently, the company services are just overvalued and its ratings are absolutely unreasonable! I urge all those who suffered from the actions of the Viking company to unite! Read Less

Two weeks ago, I returned from a four-month Around the World Cruise on the Viking Sun. The ship is beautiful. However, there were many things wrong with this cruise which is why I can give it only two stars. Five ports were missed because of "bad weather". Passengers were given NO compensation for ports missed except for one port when the ship had engine problems. The ship is two-years old and understaffed in the dining room. The service is very slow and the food is often served cold. Perpetual chaos in the dining room. Even though I complained several times to restaurant managers, the service never got better. The temperature in the dining room is often overly warm and uncomfortable. Asian food is served more often than to my liking and some foods are repeated often. Outdoor grilling is often served on the pool deck but the lines can be 15 minutes long because the cooking is slow. The passengers on the world cruise had two photo ops provided by the Viking staff on the bow of the ship. We were told that we would each receive a copy of a photo. We never received a photo. I recently learned that not only will we not receive a photo but also that the photo is posted on Facebook, and unless we have a Facebook account, we cannot see the photo nor will we receive a copy. I do not have a Facebook account and do not intend to get one. The Guest Services, Housekeeping, and bar staffs are excellent. The Shore Excursons staff does a great job of trying to accommodate passengers for their choice of shore excursions. The General Manager, Sujith, is extremely nice and does everything he can to grant requests from passengers. To sum up, I think that missing five ports on a world cruise with no compensation is unacceptable. I doubt I'll travel with Viking again. I found too many annoyances to make me want to sail with them again. Read Less

Ship & crew were far & above expectations. Food was excellent @ beginning of cruise but average by the end, was to bland for my taste. Excursions were excellent, some countries guides were below average. The ports were good, some could have been skipped & more time spent @ other ports. No sports excursions such as golf, sporting events ( would have loved to go to cricket or rugby matches. No deep sea fishing. Viking could have gotten well over 30 people for these activities. The medical staff was excellent. Our room was great. Housekeeping was excellent WiFi was always an issue. Entertainment was good, lecturers were hit and miss, seemed to be overrun by UK lectures. If I’m in the Far East would liked to have had Far East lecturers not British etc. Also UK entertainment was to much, especially comedians., with most of the passengers US Or Canadian don’t get British humor But everything put together was well above my expectations. Especially being Vikings first round the world cruise & going to many ports they have never been too Read Less

This cruise was for 121 days and was Absolutely fantastic. Viking pulled out all the stops for this round the world. They added many extras like 24 hour room service, free laundry, and premium drink package. Everything was top notch. There was over 50 stops and each one was unique and interesting. The excursions were well planned and exceeded my expectations. Customer service was incredible. Every detail was thought about and taken care of. Although we visited many different countries all the customs procecedures were well taken of, eliminating any custom issues. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and professional and the tour buses very modern with airconditioning. The crew was superb and the Captain, cruise director, and general manager were spectactular. Even though we had over 900 passengers, the managers personally knew me and my background. The crew worked very well as a team with showed that management was very effective. The food, entertainment, and cultural presentations were first class. I cannot say enough on how good this cruise was! I would highly recommend Viking to all my friends. Read Less

Viking offered their first world cruise that for us started in Los Angeles January 5, 2018 and ended in England on May 5, 2018. 4 months, 25 countries and 52 ports. I can't say enough how much the crew on Viking exceeded every expectation and provided customer service that was 5 star ++! You can not imaginine how efficient being on board ship allows you to make the most of your time, not only while at sea but also when at a port of call. Viking offers included tours at every port of call, along with many optional tours at each port. You can also go ashore in most countries and tour on your own. Most, not all ports, are very closet to if not right at city centers or you can take a taxi or "Tuk Tuk" to your desired destination. While on board Viking ships, 6 now in use and I believe another 8 or more under construction, there is so much offered that you can either choose to participate or not. We enjoyed the "Trivia" sessions where when at port for 1 hour you team up and play Trivia answering 15 questions and then a final team playoff. You not only learn a lot but get to meet so many new friends. The nightly entertainment was exceptional and changed as new top notch tallent came on board every few days. Most important is Viking's service. I expect a high level of service and my expection was exceeded time after time. Their staff from the Captain, first mate, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Chef and down to each employee treated you like family with smiles and chit-chat. We have already booked another cruise with Viking and are looking forward to seeing many old friends and can't wait for our next adventure on Viking. Don't wait or procrastinate, your own "Trip of a Life Time" is waiting for you...you won't regret it as you will have so many adventures and meet so many new friends to share your experience with on board Viking. Go see, experience new countries and share with your friends. Have lots of fun! Read Less

The crew and staff did their best to ensure everyone’s safety Some of the passengers were obnoxious demanding and very rude to the crew and staff More disciplinary actions should have been taken towards those obnoxious passengers though The ports of call were fantastic and there was so much to see We felt safe at all times Some of the passengers came on board sick and their coughs and colds spread like wild fire The medical staff was excellent and caring ensuring the health and stability of the passengers I wish though that some of the staff would not have been so negatively chatty with the passengers One in particular was the female singer who talked about the passengers in a very negative way She was the opera singer and thought she was the “star” of the Viking Sun She was very negative Unfortunately she is on the new around the world cruise this year 2019 that left early January Read Less

The brand new Viking Sun, one of Viking’s many identical mid-sized ships to come, seemed ideal as it would be sparklingly new in every way. Then too, the itinerary sounded fantastic from Miami, Florida to London via the Panama Canal and Los Angeles, multiple south seas islands, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Manila, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia/IndoChina, Thailand, India, Arabian ports, Egypt, Malta, Algiers, southern Spanish ports, and Porto Spain. Many cruise ship features that are usually paid extra en route were included in the quoted cruise fares which made it feel richer and more convenient, but of course passengers are getting nothing for free. Wi-fi, for example, which has been a ripoff for many passengers for years, was “free” but very marginal and intermittent at best. For a very long cruise one was basically unable to carry on much of modern ordinary financial or communications needs with such inadequate service. Many ports were simply too far from sight-seeing and cultural destinations to make visiting them much more than very long round trip bus rides. Partly this was poor planning and port selection by Viking. Partly it was a low pecking order in port assignments for a firm new to many world ports. It also showed shallowness of knowledge about the most desirable places to visit. Many passengers were experienced and well educated and in some cases experienced comical day tours for quite a bit of extra cost. This was also true of on board entertainment, much of which was sophomoric. There was quite a bit of crew rotation which caused service of all kinds to be quite variable. About the time young crew members knew and performed their jobs well, they’d be off the ship and new ones joined. The younger crew themselves were wonderful and eager to please, so it was management’s newness to long cruising that was at fault. Cabins or staterooms were new, clean, cheerful, functional, and all had small verandas. Food service consisted of a breakfast and nearly day long buffet, three dinner restaurants, and several small bars and snack sites. One dinner restaurant was walk-in and the other two were reservation only. Good food was had, for the most part, but portions were rather meager in the reservation restaurants. The chefs in these two were quite creative, often too much so for some people. I would say food was one of the better aspects of Viking Sun. Senior crew who interfaced with the public seemed inexperienced and sometimes rather rude. Many were not very fluent in cruise languages, primarily English. There were quite a few excellent lecturers on board between many ports who added much to the amateurish shore excursions and on board entertainment. They were knowledgeable and fine teachers on many subjects. Read Less

We took the 141 day cruise because it hit most of the places on our bucket list and it was in celebration of our retirement. The ship was quite nice and our cabin was spacious enough. But after 4 months we started to get bored with the menu, it had been repeated once already. The activities were getting humdrum as well as the entertainment. At the beginning of the cruise, there was a great variety but near the end it was very drab and a lot of countrywestern music which I hate. I wanted to see more illusionists and modern music. Most of the ports were quite nice but it was very very very hot and humid. We had many people nearly pass out, including myself, from the heat. China and india were very polluted and filthy. There was garbage everywhere. Because of my asthma, it was difficult to breathe. Most of the ports we docked at were commercial ports unlike most of the other cruise line ports. My embarkation experience was okay. I had no problems with my flights. My suitcase was damaged between the airport and the ship and delivery was delayed until quite late . I thoroughly enjoyed my time on board. I liked the decor and available amenities. I frequently walked on the decks and used the gym. I used many of the public areas throughout the day. I especially enjoyed the upper level of the Explorers' Lounge when I wanted a quiet spot and I enjoyed the pool area when I felt more social. My cabin was comfortable and most importantly had enough storage. I ate breakfast and lunch in the World Cafe. The food was good and I enjoyed the variety and ate out on the Aquavit Terrace as often as possible. I often had dinner in The Restaurant and was pleased with the selections offered. I enjoyed multiple meals at Manfredi's and they were awesome. I often enjoyed tea in the Wintergarden and the scones were excellent. I also ate at the Pool Grill on days I returned late from an excursion and my food was cooked to order. I thought the entertainment was exceptional. The variety of guest entertainers was great. I believe new entertainers arrived every six days. Each of the three acts performed two nights so that after six days they left the ship. The Viking Band was awesome. They usually played with the guest entertainers on stage and played in Torshavn Lounge after the stage show. I have great memories of many nights listening and dancing to the music of these talented musicians in the Viking Band. The band sought requests and socialized with guests. I enjoyed The Viking Trio, the guitarist Laslo and the pianist Ferry. who played between 5:00 and 11:00 each day. Concerts in the Atrium we excellent.All the service was exceptional - bar staff, waitstaff, & housekeeping were the best. Educational speakers were excellent. There were too many out of the way industrial ports requiring long commutes to the desired destination. Excursion descriptions were glorified and inaccurate. The complimentary wifi was pitiful and it was very difficult to post on my blog. I preferred this ship to the larger options and would consider cruising with Viking again. Since this cruise was Viking's first World Cruise, I hope they learn from experience and improve in the area of shore excursions with accurate descriptions. Read Less

We chose Viking because we had cruised with them on the rivers of Europe. We chose the 141 day World Cruise so we could see the world. We were not disappointed on either goal. Many friends asked before the cruise if 141days was too much and we weren’t sure but now that it is done we could recommend it without reservation. The ship was brand new and a beautiful design, elegant but comfortable, plenty of places to find a quiet spot to read. There were bridge lessons and duplicate play which was a surprise. The entertainment was fantastic and quite varied. Food was outstanding. Viking doesn’t nickel and dime you with a lot of extra expenses. On such a long cruise we actually got to know the crew well and crew members actually left the ship before we did and the good bye ceremonies were great. Our Cruise Director, Heather Clancy, was the most amazing talent and amazing person. As we left the ship to come home at 4:45AM in London, she was there to say good bye and give us a hug, as were the other Officers. She also led our Christian Worship each week. The house Band was amazing and backed up a wide range of entertainers on the stage at night and performed afternoon concerts in the atrium. The whole 141 days was the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We have done 4 world cruises previously and wanted to try their first World Cruise 141 days.The ship is lovely the food was like most ships we did not as a whole enjoy the specialty restaurants the food was not the higher quality we expected. The portions were small and usually too salty or strange to our taste that even though they were offered to the world cruise set free we canceled our reservations after the 5th try! The Italian restaurant was good but did not offer spaghetti or angel hair pasta without previous arrangement. The room was lovely we had a Deluxe Veranda and the heated floors and large flat screen TV was the best we had seen, even in some of the ships highest end rooms! The service was excellent the restaurant staff and bar service was top notch. Because the ship was financed by the largest Chinese Bank the serving staff had to be a large portion of the staff was Chinese and they were well trained and excellent at their jobs! They went overboard with their on board cultural experiences! Entertainment was often local and the ship usually did only one show unfortunately there was no way to display the talent properly. Their theater seating could not seat everyone on board so many had to stand or dodge the person in front or get there early to get the front row. For some reason the ship refused to do 2 shows a night even though they know neither the pool area or theater could seat everyone on board. This was something we had never run into before so if you are going for entertainment you might pick another ship. All entertainment except for 1 night a week at the disco (the dance floor will only accommodate 6 or 8 couples) the bar was the only place they had real rock and role to dance to everything else was very cultural high brow. Guitar, Chamber Music,Opera ,Piano and Violinist were the order of the day every day!!!! If this is what you like this is your ship but if you were raised on Rock and Roll like most Americans seek another ship! A once in awhile comedian or magician was a treat. Believe me this can make a lonnnnnggg World cruise! If you like musical theater and dance this is not your ship. The ports of call were standard fare and as they were new at this some mistakes were made they did not have the money to pay for us to cruise Hulong Bay as we were promised we were not happy! One of the best things on board was the large outdoor seating for meals on the stern. When the weather was good they threw all the sliding doors back and it was wonderful. The Spa is spacious and the extras they offer are great fun. The Gym is well thought out and works very well. Only it does not open early so if you want to exercise early or late you will find that it is closed to the guests and opened for the crew only! Beware we were told Cruise insurance was included of 150% when my husband became ill but they paid us less than 100%. There was no asterisk or foot note to say up to etc. even on the contract but the insurance company refused to live up to the promises that Viking made to us in their brochures so you might want to get additional insurance. In essence she is a lovely ship but would be better on a shorter cruise. Also beware the promises that Viking makes they will not pay 150% they lied! When I booked the cruise they said they had Zumba on board and they did not! Read Less

Inaugural world cruise that gave me an opportunity to see the world on a beautiful new ship. The ship is beautiful and has so many spaces for meeting friends or spending some quiet time alone. The crew was always helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The guest speakers were excellent and the entertainment was excellent. Lots of local entertainers and a variety throughout the cruise. The captain was very friendly and gave a noontime status report. In every port we were provided with many options to fill our time. The dining options were very good and several local chefs joined the cruise to provide local favorites. Our cabin was comfortable and the staff were constantly checking to make sure we had anything we wanted. Viking went out of their way to make sure we had a memorable vacation. Read Less

Enjoying immensely our 141 day world cruise, which is Vikings first. First class in every way except the included shore excursions - so don't consider that shore excursions are included when weighing up if this is the cruise for you. You have to buy your port excursions through Viking or independently online unless you want crap and don't mind wasting your time. They may look great in print, but this has been our experience port after port. We have sprung for some of Vikings upgraded tours and they have been adequate. We have also booked online through Viator and had wonderful experiences. Amazing cruise director Heather Clancy. Far more things to do on board than we ever expected. Most not needed in our opinion. More wheelchairs and scooters onboard than we ever expected too, since you read in Vikings info that they are not allowed. People who are not able bodied, but who still attempt shore excursions beyond their ability have added to our frustration as large groups are slowed to the speed of the least able bodied. Viking has thought of everything to make this World Cruise the best of everything. The entertainment, excursions, enrichment, and food have all been exceptional. Viking has staffed this World Cruise with their best people in every department. Thus service is excellent. We have enjoyed cooking classes on days at sea. The enrichment program speakers have been very good and come from a variety of backgrounds including art history, government, retired military, and even a cookbook writer. Please note that this cruise is not for handicap or elderly people. The excursions require quite a bit of walking, climbing stairs, and stamina. No excursion is wheel chair, scooter, or walker friendly. Getting around the ship can be maneuvered easily when the seas are calm. We have encountered quite a few days of rough seas when even able bodied guests have struggled to stay on their feet. All in all our expectations have been more than met on this wonderful Viking Sun. We've always wanted to go on a world cruise (150 days) - and we had heard such wonderful things about Viking. Also, the Viking Sun was a new ship with modern electronics. The ship was a smaller one with less than 1000 passengers, which was great for us. All the appointments on the ship were clean, new and comfortable. A goodly number of dining venues was available and all were very good. The ship planned many, many daily activities just in case the shore excursions weren't enough. And at every port, there was always one included excursion. There were also a varied quantity of other excursions if you wanted to go in a different direction. The nice thing about the ship being smaller was that we rarely had to be tendered into port. Also, we visited ports that larger ships couldn't go to. Initially the Wi-Fi was too slow, but the management listened and arranged to have it augmented and sped up. Much happier after that. The en suite TV electronic system was marvelous. The service was wonderful and the crew always cheerful and attentive. Getting on and off this ship was much easier than the larger ships by far. Will definitely sail with Viking again. Read Less

It was happening when we wanted to go, and to places that were on our bucket list. And we had previously been on a Viking River cruise . Which was totally outstanding. The ship was brand new, it was its maiden voyage. The restaurants on board were magnificent, there wasn’t a detail that was missed. I don’t think you could ever beat how terrific the crew was, it was like a family. And you were welcomed home after your day ashore. This was a World Cruise, we were gone for 141 days, it was sad to leave the ship. The way the ship was set up, public areas, it was like going into someone’s private living room or library. The different lounges were absolutely amazing. We enjoyed this cruise so much, we booked another, a back to back. Starting in Stockholm and doing the Baltic and ending in Bergen and then going to the top of Europe and back to Greenwich. Read Less

We have always enjoyed cruising with Viking. First with their river cruises and then Ocean cruise. We initially were skeptical about a 120 day ocean cruise but we were. very happy that we chose to take this cruise. I had some food allergy issues but the staff were very good to make sure my needs were accommodated. The staff of the ship were excellent. From the Barista who made us Capuchinos, to the bartenders and all the dining staff in the various restaurants. The Captain had a good sense of humour and kept us informed of what was going on. The Cruise Director was outstanding in all aspects and readily available to talk to anyone. The entertainment throughout the cruise was excellent. The enrichment lectures were very good for the most part. The shore excursions surprised as and were very good. Overall, no complaints at all. We had planned for this Viking inaugural round-the-world cruise two years earlier, but we decided to get married one week before our departure - so it became our extended honeymoon and what a memorable honeymoon it turned out to be. Before signing up for the cruise, we studied the countries and ports we will be visiting. We were very impressed with the ports that Viking has chosen since most of them were not the frequently picked by the usual crowd. We were also glad that Viking has taken the chore of obtaining all the necessary visas at no cost to us. The entire embarkation and disembarkation process was a breeze and we were the envy of the passengers of other cruise ships docking nearby. Everything was top notch, services such as dining, entertainment and excursions, to the ship and cabin. Viking has always been rated numero uno for their river cruises, but after launching world cruises three years ago, Viking has been rated numero uno already for 2016 and 2017 - very impressive. Four months of traveling alone, both firsts for me (and for the Sun), along with eccentric eating practices, made me rather apprehensive as the embarkation date approached. Instead it was a glorious experience. The variety of the 50+ port excursions, my raison d'être, many ports one-dayers and/or new to Viking, not to mention the preparatory port talks, were well run, seldom a cattle-car experience. The World Cafe provided me with my best dining experience ever, for its variety and convenience. I'd done a short cruise on the sister Viking Star, and was as delighted as I expected to be with the cabin. The senior staff, especially the cruise director, were extraordinarily warm, energetic, and responsive to constructive feedback. Other high points were the duplicate bridge, trivia contests, and library contents. With respect to entertainment, I've never been charmed by stage shows or cocktail parties, but I was delighted to watch the Eagles' march to the Super Bowl during the first weeks crossing the Pacific. Though I'm quite happy by myself, the fellow travelers I met on excursions and shipboard activities were mostly good companions. Only persistent problem was temperature control in the public spaces -- not unexpected for a first cruise in the tropics which were mostly new to Viking. Value for money? This was our third cruise with Viking and we chose this cruise because of our past experience. The ship is so conveniently designed for the comfort of the passengers. Our Cabin was quite comfortable even for a 122 day cruise. The steward were extremely attentive and took care of our every need. The food was very much to our liking and offered many alternatives for us.there were always excellent alternatives from which to choose. The shore excursions seemed well organized and offered many alternatives from which to choose. There was high quality entertainment every evening. I don’t think we missed more than a handful of the performances. There just seemed to be so many things to do for personal enjoyment. The interaction with so many new friends was awesome and several have kept in touch even four months later. We have booked another, our fourth cruise with Viking and are counting the days. We even booked the same cabin as well. With all of Viking ships constructed and laced out the same it just felt like we were going to our home away from home.
