Have done a Viking River Cruise & had great experience, so decided to do Viking Ocean Cruise. Wanted a worry-free trip where all was paid for in advance from pickup at airport to pre-excursion to ship to post-excursion to airport. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly with no issues. Ship was top notch with well appointed cabin. Was a great Mediterranean experience with gorgeous views. Cabin service was great. Food and drink was top quality including days we used room service for breakfast and options for friends with dietary was taken care of with no issues. The Spa both free and with fees were top notch. Overall shore excursions good. Some ports were better than others for excursions offered. recommend the Pre-extension: Tuscany,Ultimate Italy. Favorite ports: Venice, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Santorini. Would take another Viking Ocean cruise for the Western Mediterranean area from Barcelona to Florence/Pisa, Rome, Naples & around the Amalfi Coast with possible pre &/or post excursions.Would also look at another Viking River Cruise as well possibly France, or Portugal. I do recommend this cruise but there were numerous shortcomings. I wish there was a rating of 3.5 stars as that is what I would have chosen. Overall Viking does do a very nice job. The lobby live music nightly was quite nice and relaxing and overall was excellent. I did not find the included wines to be particularly good. The food though was excellent througout the journey of 12 nights. The nightly official entertainment was pretty good and I cannot complain. The onboard spa was also very nice with the warm wave pool, snow room, and other pleasantries. The planetarium and astronomy/flying lectures were a very nice addition and appreciated. There are certain items I cannot explain like the failure to have a full size roller in the exercise room as opposed to half-size ones. Also, there were at least a half dozen times when servers brought me an ice-tea or ice coffee but failed to bring a straw or a spoon to stir in the Splenda or cream. This was particularly the case in the World Cafe where the staff generally appeared less experienced. There was also an issue of not refilling the water glasses promptly. The included excursions and some of the paid ones were not particularly compelling or that well executed generally speaking. I cannot say they were bad but they should be better. If we do another Viking cruise, I would likely independently book private excursions at each location. Also, other cruise lines we noted along the way had multiple stops for their shuttles to the city from the boat. Viking had one single stop and one had to find their way from there. To that end, it would have been most helpful if Viking had prepared potential walking itineraries for travelers taking the shuttle. This would have made it much easier on guests wishing to walk about the city without an organized excursion without the need to recreate the wheel. I also found prices on the optional pre-cruise stay and the price of returning to the airport at the end to have been excessive. I recognize Viking is a profit seeking enterprise but there is no need to gouge folks. This is especially so for guests not staying in the cheaper cabins on the boat. I also do not like the fact that gratuities are not baked into the cost of the trip and that modestly priced liquor and wine is also not baked into the cost. Internet access was not stellar but acceptable. I suspect higher speeds could be attained if Viking were willing to pay the price but I am not certain of this. This is not a bargain basement cruise line and they could do better in certain areas. Nevertheless, as noted, they do a nice job overall. Read Less

This was a family cruise picked because the dates and ports were of the most interest to the majority of the group. The ship was a good size, easy to get around in and offering a good opportunity to get to know most of the crew and passengers. The crew was exceptional, from the housekeeping, to the beverage and dinning crew and the entertainment group (special kudos to Heather and Eion ). The cabins were comfortable and the bathrooms a good size. The planetarium and the Nordic Spa (with its steam sauna and snow room) were a unique and pleasant experience. All of us enjoyed the lectures offered, the nordic museum, and the common areas. Was somewhat disappointed with the food on the Chefs Table and Manfred's specialty restaurants and would not rate any of the excursions ( the included ones and some of the optional ones) more then mediocre. Over 100 years ago, 16 year old Emilio Schiavone left Italy with little more than the clothes on his back. In 2019 his grandson returned with the clothes on his back*. Air Canada lost his luggage for 5 days. But Viking graciously gave me a ship board allowance, even though it was not responsible. *(and several major credit cards) The ship board experience was excellent. We were treated like royalty. Meals and service were outstanding. The shore excursions included in the tour ranged from very good (Pisa) to poor (Barcelona). Our Barcelona tour guide did not wait for the slower members to cross intersections and channelled us into specific tourist shops. We paid for the Vatican Museum and Sistine chapel. Excellent. Very knowledgeable guide. Obviously paid tours are the way to go. We are taking another tour, this time to Germany, in 2020. We found Viking through its sponsorship of Downton Abbey. I would very much like to take more trips with viking, now that I am more knowledgeable. Meals on board were everything I could imagine . my wife is vegetarian and they were very accommodating. The 4 pm tea with the musical duo provided a dash of class. I especially enjoyed my daily campari and soda in the lounge. The ship had a well stocked library as well. Read Less

This was my first ever cruise and I'm told I'll only want to stay with Viking from now on. Everything exceeded my expectations. We booked air through Viking to take advantage of the transfer services which made flying to and from foreign countries much less stressful. Viking runs a tight ship (get it) and it shows. All transfers were smooth, easy, and on time. Getting right out of the airport and onto a van to take you directly to the ship is much easier than having to worry about taxis or buses. The ship itself looked brand new, which it might have been, a plaque said Anno 2019. Everything was clean and no detail was overlooked in the decoration. Cabins were comfortable and spacious, although the beds could have been more comfortable. I particularly enjoyed the heated floors in the bathroom. The private veranda was nice although I felt as though I didn't take full advantage of it because there were so many other cool places to hang out. The dining was excellent. Something for even the pickiest eaters. I enjoyed the destination menus. Manfredi's was just okay in my opinion. The pasta was very good, but the entrees were uninspiring. The huge portions didn't really win me over either. Entertainment was engaging and the Explorer's Dome was a fun touch. The service was EXCELLENT! It seemed like everyone knew my name after the third day. All of the staff had bright smiles and were fun to talk to. Friendships were fostered and it made leaving the ship that much harder. Already planning our next trip with Viking! Read Less

Our original intention was to take a river cruise but rooms sold out for the dates we could schedule, so we opted for the ocean cruise. The ports were good as well as the length of the cruise (12 days). Smaller ship but very quaint and easy to get around. Restaurants were perfect for food selections and never waited for tables. Entertainment we witnessed was unexpected. It was grand and beyond our expectations. More to do then we could squeeze in. Staff was personable and extremely polite. Excellent pool and steam area. Fitness machines were so updates I could not figure some of them out. A few time when I went to the gym there were no lockers. Small area for amount of people on board. Appreciated the elegance of the ship without the youth running around you. We added 1 day in Venice and 2 days in Barcelona on our own. The cruise add on's were priced way out of line! We booked luxury hotels for less that half. Only drawback is you handle your our luggage. Boarding and debarkation was as smooth as we ever experienced. We wanted to see it all so port excursions became tiring. So many to choose from. New and very clean buses. Good excursion hosts. Drop off/pick up point in France was seedy and dirty with no shopping. Monaco was beautiful and clean. Needed more time there to enjoy the museum, casinos and shops. Overall our trip was beautiful and memorable! Thank you! Read Less

We found the ocean cruise the be a delightful experience as well. Our treatment by the crew, the excursions and other dealing made us want to take yet another cruise with Viking. We really enjoyed the specialty restaurants. The food and service were outstanding. The crew members called us by name and exceeded our expectations. We also liked the beverage package with the upgraded wine pairings. We appreciated the opportunity to dine in a variety of locations including the buffet, the pool grill, the Explorer Lounge and other locations. Shore excursions were well planned and allowed us to see prime locations in the ports/cities visited. We also like the low pressure, relaxing itinerary fo the entire cruise allowing time to relax and refresh. Read Less

The itinerary was exactly what I was looking for and it didn’t disappoint. The Jupiter was clean, beautiful and just the right size. The food was phenomenal and the variety was spectacular! Our stateroom was comfortable and always serviced when needed. The balcony provided exciting views in every port. The onboard entertainment was suited to the age of the cruisers and was presented by extremely talented performers. The overall atmosphere was warm and conducive to allow the chance to form new friendships. The staff always had a smile and was always available if needed. I can’t think of any vacation or trip that I have been on where you could tell the staff all loved their job. Excursions were varied in difficulty so that they provided the opportunity for everyone to participate. They also offered the chance to glimpse a port or delve in deeply if one had visited the area previously. I can’t think of anything I would change! Read Less

We cruised with two other couples who had chosen this cruise to celebrate birthdays. This was our first cruise and we were very impressed with the Viking Jupiter which went into service earlier this year. The food at the restaurants was excellent and we had no problem making reservations at Manfredis and The Chefs Table. The included wines that were served at lunch and dinner were excellent in our estimation. Our cabin (deluxe veranda) was well appointed and was well cared for by housekeeping personnel. We particularly enjoyed the entertainment of the TV which included US networks. The Viking band and entertainers provided great entertainment each night. We particularly enjoyed the games and musicians in the Atrium. We toured each day and did three optional tours. The included tours were very well organized with knowledgeable tour guides. Like everything else, the enbarkation and disembarkation procedures were very well organized and efficient. Read Less

It was an exceptional experience and I was sad to disembark and leave behind the crew that had become like family over the 2 week experience. The food selection and quality of food was amazing and the additional of the destination menu was superb. The ship was beyond clean in every inch of the ship. The cabins were cleaned twice a day . The crew was so friendly yet professional. The whole operation of the ship was flawless. From the embarkment to the dismemberment process which was so smooth, the port excursions were run on time and seamless. This cruise took us to many places that we hadn't been to before. And not having to pack and unpack a suitcase at each port was a real plus! We found the ship to be immaculate and the staff to be so very friendly and accommodating. The food and dining options on this cruise were wonderful! We also found the entertainment in the theater to be outstanding. We especially enjoyed the daily presentations that were given regarding the port we would be embarking on each day, in addition to the historian and astronomer's presentations. It was nice to be able to view these presentations on the TV set in our cabin if we couldn't see them in person. The classical music in the atrium, plus the rock music and dancing in the lounge each night provided nice entertainment options. Viking does a great job of handling passengers to and from its scheduled excursions at each of the ports. We liked having a Viking representative by our side from the time we got off the airplane in Venice to the time we got off our bus at the Barcelona airport. We're looking forward to our next Viking cruise, which we've already booked to Australia and New Zealand! Read Less

We enjoyed the excursions. With only one exception, the local guides were very professional. The guide in Naples was the exception. The guide in Split was extremely good and very knowledgeable. The guides in Dubrovnik, Corfu and Marseille were very good. Ship cabin immaculate each and every day. First day required service from maintenance to fix closet sliding door. Done very efficiently. Room stewards always very polite and interested in hearing about our excursions. Entertainment fun and also, at times, full of interesting facts and info. I like hearing about sights to be explored. During the cruise itself, food was excellent, staff listened to concerns and addressed. Shore excursions and weather were excellent. Liked the included shore excursions as well as option to choose another excursion for additional fee if desired. Liked the educational information and UNESCO sites provided by Viking. It was nice to have wine/beer/ sodas included for lunch and dinner so no need to purchase a drink package. If desired additional beverages outside of mealtimes the prices were reasonable to purchase. The cleanliness of the ship and the service was good. The Spa area was a nice feature which was an included amenity unless you desired to purchase facials or massages. Fitness area was very nice. Our cabin was well appointed and looked new. Enjoyed the outside balcony area. The bathroom was perfect even though smaller than the bathroom on the river cruise. No children for the cruise and preferred this and was another reason chose Viking. Loved the sites and would use Viking again and recommend Viking to other travelers. Second time with Viking, first time on one of their ocean cruises. We were part of a group of 22 that go on a "big trip" every two years. After a successful 15-day Viking river cruise, we decided to do a Viking ocean cruise in an area that most of us had never been. We started in Venice, had four stops down the Ionian Coast ending with various stops in Greece. Dining was really nice. The World Café had great selection of standard and rotating items for all meals. We ate our breakfasts and lunches there. Drink service could be a little long when it was crowded, but you may also easily get your own. The dining room was always very nice with old stand-bys, the chefs suggestion, plus five other entrees and a vegetarian three course selection always available. I think there were a total of eight deserts each night. You may order ala-carte from any section of the menu and ask for changes. Gluten free was the only items we were a little disappointed in. It was hit or miss with some meals being as nice as everyone else and some meals being very bland and unimaginative. Viking does provide a particular officer who meets every day with special diet passengers to try and make their dining experience seamless. Embarkation was pleasant and as quick as possible. No delays and from entering the embarkation room to being on the ship was less than thirty minutes. Enrichments activities were nice, but we did not get to many of them as we were exploring the various ports. Entertainment was good, with a nice four-person song and dance team and a four-person band. The spa and gym areas were exceptional, especially for a ship this size. If you work out, you will be able find everything to do your cardio or your strength and fitness. The spa is really nice and the pools and snow room have to be experienced at least once. Overall onboard experience was great! Everyone (crew AND passengers) were so nice and easy going. Special requests were taken care of with a smile and surprisingly quick. I watched the guest services people perform minor miracles for their guests all day …. and with a big smile! The public rooms are phenomenal. They are comfortable, relaxed, easy for groups to meet or to find a quiet nook for reading. You have to check out the upstairs of the Explorer Lounge! I have mentioned service though-out this write up and you will not be disappointed. Sure a buss person gets busy or a barista takes a few minutes for your expresso, but everyone from guest services to security is pleasant and strives to help as best they can. The included shore excursions are generally quite good. Many times will do one and get a general look at the port we are in and then head off on our own. We did have one excursion where the guide was not knowledgeable of their subject and kept making political remarks. Viking provides critiques forms for each excursion. Value for the money is subjective, everyone would like to save some money here and there, but we did feel the trip was worth what we paid. Read Less

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we chose the Viking Empires of the Mediterranean cruise and it was indeed fantastic. The Viking ship is beautiful and never feels crowded! The service is impeccable, the stewards are incredibly accommodating and personable, and the entire staff is to notch. The lounge areas are great, especially the Explorers lounge at the front of ship where we watched many a sun set while sipping cocktails. The restaurants are all fantastic and we also enjoyed room service breakfast every morning as we came into port at sunrise. The spa area is relaxing and fun with a unique snow room and cold bucket to experience Nordic traditions. The Winter Garden room for afternoon tea was a relaxing nice touch after a day of excursions. The ports and excursions were just unbelievable on this cruise highlighted by a gondola ride in Venice, the Acropolis in Athens, the sheer beauty of Santorini and the incredible walled fortress of Dubrovnik. We also did pre and post extensions with Viking which were very well run with interesting excursions, highlighted by a trip to Delphi and Olympus. Highly recommend Viking and this cruise. Read Less

We wanted to experience several cities along the Mediterranean coast but didn’t want to travel by land and reserve multiple lodgings...plus we were excited to experience ship life aboard Viking since we have had several friends who raves about their Viking cruise. We were not disappointed. Everything from boarding the first day to our disembarkment was flawless. The ship is beautifully designed and appointed with comfortable furnishing to wonderful artwork throughout. We loved how many quite spaces/places there were aboard to get away by ourselves...so different from other cruises where all the spaces are crowded. Our room was plenty spacious and very luxurious and our room stewards were delightful and always at the ready to offer us assistance. We frequented the World Cafe where the food was fabulous with a wide variety at every meal and the waitstaff was attentive without being intrusive. We dined at Manfred’s once and the meal and service was superb as was the view from our window table. We dined at the Chef’s Table the night they were serving an Asian themed meal. The food was interesting but not our favorite meal. Our days were so busy and filled with excursions that we rarely took advantage of the entertainment. I did attend the cooking class taught by the lead chef and pastry chef which was a fun event and also the tour of the ship’s bridge which was most interesting. We also enjoyed the on-board musicians. The overall service was top notch with nothing lacking their attention. We often took many of the optional excursions in addition to the included ones...meaning we were very busy almost every day of the cruise. We most likely would not do that again. Celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with a Mediterranean Cruise. We chose Viking because of its comprehensive itinerary of 6 countries in 13 days. The weather was great and the pre cruise and post cruise extensions greatly enhanced the actual cruise itself. The pre cruise extension enabled us to meet, and make, new friends that we enjoyed when embarking for the cruise itself. The shore excursions were interesting, fun and educational at the same time. The ship's cabin was a comfortable size and we very much enjoyed the heated bathroom floor. The food was plentiful, tasty and had something for every; plus, the included wine for lunch and dinner was a very nice addition. The crew members were very attentive to our requests and eager to make our experience special. This was our fourth cruise and first with Viking, we will definitely book with Viking again. We very much enjoyed the way evening meals included foods from whatever country we had visited that day. It was enjoyable to try new foods from the various destinations, and the food was always prepared and served so beautifully. Having our comfortable veranda room to return to each day was a big plus. We only had to unpack once. Our room had generous closet and drawer space, and was tended diligently to by the crew. We were so impressed with Viking on our cruise to Great Britain in May that we just had to book this cruise to the Mediterranean in October. The trip started with a wonderful three days in a villa in Tuscany before we took a bus ride to Venice to embark on the cruise. Embarkation took only 15 minutes, and our luggage was already waiting for us in our cabin. We chose the Penthouse Jr Suite for this cruise and found it to be roomy, spotless and quite comfortable. You cannot beat the extra large showers in this suite! For the next twelve days we thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful ship, its crew and excellent cuisine. Our favorite eatery was the terrific buffet. The World Cafe is simply superb! It is, hands down, the best buffet we have experienced on a cruise, and that includes Celebrity and Regent. The specialty dining did not disappoint either, although we really don't care for the Chefs Table. Viking makes no excuses about being an excursion focused cruise line. We only had one sea day and every day contained lectures on various topics related to the Mediterranean. Port talks were very well presented and always well attended. Speakers were interesting and very informative. The entertainment on our first Viking cruise was barely average, so we skipped most of the evening activities this time around. Overall, this was another fantastic cruise that convinced us Viking needs to be on our short list for cruises in the future. Read Less

We had heard so much about Viking river cruises that we thought we would try Viking Ocean to be the best vehicle to get the multiple countries within a short time accomplished. Once we were on the ship and had familiarized ourselves, we began to realize what a great choice we had made. The ship's staff was extremely accommodating. The food and beverages were plentiful and excellent. The activities and entertainment were all more than we expected. We enjoyed most of the daily excursions, but we found that we needed to read and select them carefully. We were disappointed with a couple of the bus-based excursions like Rome and Marseilles, France. Corfu, Greece was less than we had hoped and if it were deleted from the itinerary, we wouldn't have been disappointed. We enjoyed the walking excursions and the history that we experienced with the tour guides was fantastic. We are considering Viking for our next cruise as they earned our respect and appreciation.
