This is our second Viking ocean cruise and we have already booked our third! The ship is luxuriously appointed with comfortable seating everywhere. There is a choice of dining venues from the informal World Cafe to the Chef's Table. Food is outstanding at each and every venue. The onboard "enrichment" (lectures, talks, films etc.) were all most interesting and enjoyable, with some outstandingly good speakers. The expeditions were also excellent, well planned and interesting. They even provide a 'shuttle bus' service for passengers wishing to arrange their own excursions. The exercise and spa facilities are just the best ever. The sauna, steam room, snow cabin, swimming pools and other installations are But the thing that really makes Viking the BEST is the staff. Every member of the ship's crew and staff wants to make their guests as happy and comfortable as possible. Any small problems that may arise are dealt with promptly and courteously. Viking are not the cheapest, but they are undoubtedly the best value for money. I'm counting the weeks until our next Viking cruise! Read Less

After our amazing Viking River cruise in 2011, we swore we'd never do an ocean cruise again! We eventually did do an Alaska cruise which was great, but the whole time we said, "It's not Viking!" So when Viking started their ocean cruises we began looking for the best opportunity to sail with them again. We wanted to sail over spring break which narrowed down our dates and ended up on the Italian Sojourn cruise. We had always wanted to see more of Italy and the dates worked. Our first impression of the Sky was one of awe. This was a five-star floating hotel! Our cabin (5034 - PV2 cat) was beautiful and spacious beyond our expectations. The finishes on this ship are gorgeous - the wood, furnishings, and even the handrails are beautiful! We toured the ship and settled into the Explorer Lounge to await the arrival of our friends. It is the most special place on the entire ship -- chairs and sofas of the softest leather, a gas fireplace, a bar, and the most spectacular views. Our friends were next door to us in 5036 (DV2 cat) - noticeably smaller but spacious enough. The service on the Sky was nothing less than spectacular. Our cabin steward saw to our every need, usually before we asked. Every waiter, bartender, tour guide, and entertainer we came across was friendly, spoke perfect English, and anticipated our needs. The entertainment was just right for this ship - mostly soft, acoustic music in the common areas and restaurants (the piano, flute, violin, and cello players were amazing) and the shows like the Broadway review and Beatles shows were excellent as well. The food! Most cruises I've been on (with the exception of the Viking River cruise) have food that looks better than it tastes. The meals we had on board are equal to any luxury restaurant on land. How they manage to feed 900 passengers and make each meal more special than the last one is beyond me. The breakfast buffet in the World Cafe was plentiful. Snacks were available throughout the day, as was bottled water. Our meal in Manfredi's will go down as an all-time travel favorite. Our meals in The Restaurant were likewise memorable and anticipated. The itinerary was a great overview of southern Italy. I was shocked to see how industrial the port of Naples is and was glad we had taken the excursion to Herculaneum. We debated between that excursion and the one to Pompeii. Several on the Herculaneum trip had been to Pompeii before and thought Herculaneum was far superior. It was astounding! We took the excursion to Taormina in Sicily and that was delightful as well. We did not book an excursion in Crotone as the ones we wanted were sold out so we did the walking tour on our own (the bus takes you into the town and brings you back). This was the only port I was disappointed in and would highly encourage you to book an excursion on this day. Bari was stunning -- another included walking tour, but this one was amazing! I'm glad we stayed in the city for that one. In Croatia, we took a bus from Šbenik to Split to Diocletian's Palace. Highly recommended! And finally, we just did the Doge's Palace walking tour in Venice which gave us plenty of time to explore on our own. From door to door, our trip was perfect (even the predicted rainy weather held off!) and I am already looking forward to cruising with Viking again. Read Less

We had never cruised with Viking before but seeing photos of their new Ocean ships, we fell in love with the aesthetic and the designs of the ships. First impressions on board, the staff were so friendly and helpful, immediately had a glass of wine in hand and we were off to a great trip. We were on the 8th floor in a deluxe Veranda Cabin. First time having a balcony on a cruise and loved it. We hit rough seas leaving New York and I was starting to wonder what we got ourselves into but once we arrived in the Caribbean it was calm and beautiful. The drink package was a great deal and allowed us to try many different new wines with dinner, the wine stewards were also very good with their suggestions. We did not partake in many activities on board, we enjoyed our team reading, going to the indoor spa and gym, and using the pools. The Spa was a nice touch and after a port day was very relaxing and enjoyable. The main dining room was always very good and I liked the regional tasting menus at each destinations. Manfredi's Italian was very good and I absolutely loved the Chef's Table, I wish I had tried all the different menus. I have booked another viking Cruise for December 2018 and can't wait. Read Less

Had no preconceived ideas as first Viking" cruise experience. From check in and embarkation I knew this was different. We felt like invited and treasured guests. The Explorers lounge was our intro...a good one. The greeting from staff was so welcoming and so personal...and the small number of guests made us feel we were on a private cruise..til we immediately made friends of like minded folk. And all we're of the same opinion as many many were returnees. We literally had NO negative experiences on board. Excursions were excellent and the presence on the on board "experts" at some excursions especially helpful, I love the academic/scientific/historical aspect of the areas we visited and found the coverage exceptional. The local guides were truly delightful especially in Scotland. Knowledgeable and entertaining, we were taken onto an adventure that they lived and breathed. The opportunity to visit the archeological ruins of these tiny islands was an exceptional treat. Impossible for tour descriptors to really capture but the pre tour lectures were near perfect preps, especially those by scholar/scientists on board. Norway was spectacular as promised. The access we had to enter narrow exquisite fjords in near silence amongst the breathtaking scenery was unforgettable and we are so grateful for the opportunity In short, i cannot recommend too highly. My husband and I have different goals sometimes and different expectations of travel...Viking met them all with this trip Read Less

The three best things about this cruise for me were the staff, the onboard facilities and the furnishing and fittings of the ship. But there was nothing that was less than excellent. The staff bent over backwards to make sure our holiday experience was as good as possible - nothing was ever too much trouble. Best of all was our lovely cabin steward Ayu. The staff were friendly, smiling and helpful. The Nordic sauna and swimming pools (one outdoor) were lovely and everything was immaculate, not a speck of dirt or dust anywhere. Meals were wonderful as well, with a huge choice of dishes, always including some local specialities. The excursions were well organized, enjoyable and informative. There was a wide variety of entertainment onboard as well, including a splendid professional pianist. I'd do this trip again without hesitation. I have tried hard to think of something but there was nothing I could possibly criticize. Even the haircut I had onboard was exceptional! Thank you, Viking, for a wonderful two weeks. Read Less

The cruise itself was great but our cabin was not! See below. Besides the cabin, while we were getting ready to take our shore excursion early in the morning, one of the workers were on our balcony. There was no notice made, our curtains were wide open and I was so surprised to see him there. I quickly put on my shirt and pants. This was very inconsiderate of them. Another concern was when I asked for crème brulee when we were dining at World Café. I had them at World Cafe (I had to request for it) when we took a cruise last year and during lunch that day. The waiter said he would ask his supervisor. He came to our table and said that crème brulee was only available at the restaurant. I expressed my dissatisfaction and asked him if I had to go to the restaurant to get it. I also mentioned I had it during lunch and in my previous cruise without going to the restaurant (I had reservations at the restaurant but decided to dine at World Café). He then said he would get it for me. Read Less

I had never been anywhere in Africa, and this cruise visited Tunis (the medina and a Roman aqueduct ruin) and Algiers (the botanical garden, the basilica, and the martyrs' monument), plus Valletta, Cagliari, Valencia, and a breathtaking view of Volcano Stromboli. Superbly co-ordinated transfers from Rome airport to ship and ship to Barcelona airport. Wonderful food. Excellent, informative lectures, on geology of Mediterranean and World War II in North Africa. Five computers with fast internet access. Beautiful ship with lovely artwork throughout. Tours ran on time and guides were excellent, and fluent in English. Heated towel rack and bathroom floor. On one tour, I left jacket in tour bus -- the guide found it and returned to ship lost-and-found where I claimed it. Spacious stateroom with bed fit for a king. Expert classical-music trio (violin, violoncello, and flute). Gracious, attentive, high-class service throughout, from EVERYONE. I had trouble (fault of the airline); could not print boarding pass last evening of cruise -- the guest service agent was helpful and comforting -- and (GASP!) -- he telephoned the airline and enabled me to talk with a REAL HUMAN BEING about the problem!! Wanted to try out viking oceans having done a river cruise. Our cruise which has just finished was the caribean experiance. The Star is new ship and is excellent well laid out, good signage excellent atrium. Cabin size adequate small but nice balcony Main dinning room nice, food nice but service slow had to chase wine waiter on a number of occassions. Special resturants food avarage except asian night which was excellent The premier drinks package was well worth paying for which you cannot say the same for Holland and American Entertainment avarage Staff attentative and helpful Shore excursion could be better paid ones were worth the money. The two day extension in Purto Rica at the Hotel Hilton Carib was not so good, day 1 spent most time awaiting for room to be cleaned and made ready so lost the day. Day 2 using the Red city bus tour was excecellent. Would I go again with them very much so but not where I would be having to transfer in America. Transferes at Miami and at JFK were a nightmare American security and Imigration were rude, agressive even though you were doing exactly as they wanted. I can only assume the Americans do not want tourists, Read Less

Initially it was the route we wanted. The idea of a Viking ocean Cruise was new to us, but the ship facilities looked excellent and turned out to be superb. The plan had been to spend a day and a half in Istanbul, but the political situation meant that we were immediately coached to the ship and sailed away. An interesting visit to Troy was introduced as a replacement which although a shame was very acceptable. Good to have the special dining venues available at no extra cost. Generally the seating and meal ordering and delivery process was very efficient, the food of course was very good. 2 memories stand out - the spaciousness and decoration of the communal areas on the ship - and the friendly attitude of all members of staff who always had time for a few words. Not realising we had booked a maiden voyage, it was clear that both the ship and crew had been through a first class work-up. We mostly used the complementary excursions which, although simple and short, were very acceptable and gave us free time to explore or rest. The paid excursions were well organised and interesting. As a result we have booked our first river cruise (with Viking) and await the next Ocean Cruise catalogue. Read Less

We had done two Viking Ocean cruises and have cruised other lines such as Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Oceana. We like the Viking River cruises better. We had a balcony but it was on the rear of the ship so we walked a lot. There were few hangers and not that many drawers to put things in. They kept the hallways very cold, the restaurants were cold and the theater was cold. We were in the Caribbean so it should not have been cold when it was warm outside. I was getting sore throat and had to take a lot of cough drops. We ate most of our meals in the World Cafe even though tipping is automatic. The specialty restaurants were included but you needed to make all of your reservations at the beginning of the cruise. I am a comfort food person, not a gourmet. The Mexican restaurant food was not like any Mexican food I had before. The portions were small and some of the food was unfamiliar to me even though I spent 30 years going to Mexico. The Italian restaurant menu was in Italian with extremely small print in English and I could not read it with my glasses on. I just asked for ceasar salad and Chicken Parmesan. The Restaurant seemed to serve the same menu pretty often. Viking gives you wine and beer with lunch and dinner and we had purchased the silver package using a credti from our travel agent and that was good. There were two Captains parties plus a sale away on the last night with champayne and snacks and this was very good. I had a problem about being invited to a mix and mingle even though I had started the role call. So I missed the first event but Mara from Romania, who was the head of Guest Services helped us out and there was a second mix and mingle that we did attend. It seems redundant that first you have to either start the role call or enroll and an exiisting role call and then also register for a mix and mingle, But I now know this and will be ready for the next cruise. I like the River cruises better because the ships are smaller, it was never too cold and we had people, who kept us fully informed on all events. Read Less
