We were looking for a smaller ship that visited different ports than the larger cruise lines. We really enjoyed the smaller cruise ship. It was easy to get on/off at our ports, the optional and included shore excursions were very nice. No children made for a nice experience onboard. The only negative was the entertainment was not nearly as good as the bigger ships, but I didn't go on the cruise for the entertainment. The food is excellent, even having high end food like foie gras and lobster. The optional dining experiences (all included) were terrific - very much like eating at a very nice restaurant. Our cabin steward was excellent and made sure we had everything we needed. We booked the silver spirits package and enjoyed diet cokes throughout the day and a couple of cocktails at night. We booked a river cruise with Viking and hope they are as nice as this cruise ship experience. Read Less

This was our first cruise so we have nothing to compare it with. However, it was amazing. We met wonderful people, from other on-board guests to the cruise staff and had a great time. We heard from others that once you take a Viking Cruise you will never cruise with another line. We are now afraid to take a chance with another line. We rented a cabin that came with a stocked bar (as part of the package) and did not take advantage of the bar as we wanted to confirm that it was complimentary. So make sure you verify what is included in your room! My husband jokes to friends that "Oprah kept knocking on our door saying she wanted her room back." The dining choices and food selection was great. Be sure to try the various dining areas. We also enjoyed the entertainment, public spaces and talks. Be brave and experience the spa area, including the snow grotto and cold shower. Invigorating and no regrets. Since this was our first trip to Europe, we stayed two nights prior to our departure in Rome and took the train from Rome to the ship. This was a very easy process and the train ride was enjoyable. (It was about an hour ride.) We also stayed two nights in Barcelona, before heading back to the states. We stuck to the City tours for our excursion choices, as this is what we usually do on our first visits to most places. The tour busses were a little cramped for my husband who had a knee replacement, so at two of the Ports we simply took shuttles and explored the City's on our own. We did not worry about getting lost because we usually encountered a Viking tour group on our journeys. We are looking forward to our next Viking journey... Read Less

All new destinations for my wife and me. The shore excursions, both provided and extra, were superb, with the best being the Marsala Wine Tasting and visit to the baron's vineyard and winery. Algiers was a totally new and unexpected eye-opening experience. As expected from Viking, the food at all the venues, accommodations, on-board activities and entertainment were outstanding. The cabin service was also outstanding. The housekeeping staff was very responsive as well a extremely friendly and courteous. The restaurant and bar staffs were also superb. WE enjoyed the music of the "wandering troubadours" as we called them, and the onstage musicians were also met the very high expectations we have for everything Viking. We did experience the pre-cruise stay in Rome and it was outstanding as well. I suggest that a full day in Rome be offered as part of this cruise if the logistics can be worked out. Read Less

We have been Viking fans for many years but this was our first sailing on the Sun. Our biggest issue was intermittent sewer odors coming through the ventilation system (not from the bathroom area). Although maintenance and Engineering attempted to resolve, they did not resolve, possibly because this is a design issue or requires a bigger fix than they could do at sea. Either way, Guest Services management was totally unsympathetic and offered no apologies, etc. One really nagging concern is that we were upgraded from a Penthouse Veranda on deck 4 to a Penthouse Veranda Junior Suite on deck 8. I can't help but wonder if they had previous sewer odor issues with this room and this was their attempt to get by until they could get a permanent fix? Noise level in this room was unusually loud and apparently came from doors slamming immediately below the room in crew access corridors or ? Food service often was very lacking in the World Cafe (sometimes nearly had to tackle waiters for beverages) even though they appeared to be adequately staffed. Perhaps this was a training issue related to the rapid growth. The quality of entertainment from the on board musicians poor. Again, this was very different from all our previous Viking experiences. Optional excursions ranged from poor to good (but none "great") and most of our's were expensive (more than $200 pp). With tipping and other costs included, the Viking price point and value is not what it used to be. Although I left similar comments with Guest Services and on my end of cruise survey, I have yet to hear any response from Viking Management. We will likely stick to Viking river cruises going forward and look to other small ship cruise lines for ocean cruises. Read Less

We enjoy cruising with Viking. They are first class and do not “nickel and dime” you. The service is excellent and the crew is very good. Everyone working on the ship is friendly and says hello with a smile. The food is outstanding and the two specialty restaurants serve unique food . It is nice traveling with only adult passengers and also not getting harassed by photographers. The entertainment is average. We usually enjoy the lectures and classes , however, we did not enjoy them on this cruise. The topics were not interesting or relevant for us. I don’t care about somebody rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. The cruise port talks were not well done and the moderator seemed to be just reading his presentation. The two cruise directors were very friendly and personable- Mark and Heather. The two musical shows that Heather and her assistant, Brian Rodriguez, put on were very good. They both have beautiful voices . The glitches on our cruise were associated with the transition from one cruise to the other. It seemed that they forgot we were doing a B2B and we got no communication about the second half. There was a considerable change in the service for the second cruise and service wasn’t as good as the first part. There were long waits in the dining room for just service and food . Read Less

PROS: We picked this cruise for the length and itinerary--Rome to Miami 24 days. Iincluded tours in most locations were very good. The sea days were much appreciated after spending 14 days on a port a day. Getting on the ship was a breeze. The Sun is mostly identical to the Sky which we had been on in June, just newer. Very clean and well appointed. The Chef's Table had the best food. CONS: The included tours in Barcelona and Lisbon were a waste of time. Having been to both locations previously, we skipped out on both tours midway through and did our own thing. These could have been much better The exercise classes were very disappointing in selection and length. And the evening entertainment was hit and miss. Enrichment talks were often scheduled at the start of dinner. If you went to that, you would eat late and miss the entertainment. Getting off the ship in Miami was a nightmare--very disorganized and lack of communication. They kept reminding people to vacate their rooms but we couldn't leave the ship. And the people who were on their own (no flights, etc) were grouped to leave the ship first--just a bad end. Read Less

We were on the ship for 14 days. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed the cruise very much. We never felt like we were crowded. The public spaces were lovely and our cabin was a nice size with an amazing amount of storage. We were given an upgrade to the Penthouse Veranda suite which was a wonderful surprise. The mini bar was generously refreshed daily and the linens were always crisp. We wanted to see Lisbon, Valencia and Lucca so chose this trip. It was very easy getting on and off the ship, there were no tenders which was fantastic. You could walk into most towns or Viking would provide a shuttle. Viking also provides included tours in all ports. Many ships do not. We did pay for a few extra tours. There were many to choose from. Unfortunately because of the protests in France we couldn't drive into Aix-in-Provence but we understand that those things happen when traveling. The Chef's Table is high end food cooked perfectly and presented beautifully with wine pairings. There is no cost for the special dining rooms which is unlike many other ships. We found that if we didn't have a reservation, if there was room you could be seated. The World Cafe buffet had many fresh and good tasting offerings for breakfast lunch and dinner. The Pool Grill had a surf and turf night that was delicious and the chocolate buffet in the beautiful Wintergarten was stunning. Although we did not try the free sauna and snow room other guests raved about it. Read Less

The cruise is advertised as off season which is great. The weather is still good and the crowds are significantly smaller. Only disadvantage is shorter daylight hours. It is a very busy cruise with no sea days and lots to see and enjoy. The service on Viking is always excellent. We enjoyed four dinners in the included alternate dining. The Chef's table is definitely a great experience with very tasty menus. They always have a wide variety of shore experiences which are also very informative and of good value. My only complaint is you are supposed to get an included tour , yet they do fill up and sometimes are not available which I feel is false advertising. The other suggestion I would have is schedule the tours so you could do both an included tour and an option tour if desired. The resident historian was great. If I had only had him in high school , I would have learned and retained a lot more about history. Read Less

We had previously cruised with Viking in 2017 on a river cruise from Paris to Normandy. The service, excursions, food, camaraderie, and outdoor dining was very relaxing for us, and educational. We still talk about what we saw and learned. A Viking flyer sent to us detailed their new ocean cruises and brand-new ships. Their ratings were right at the top of the chart. We signed up and were truly happy with the congeniality, sincere friendliness (to include the usually behind-the-scenes crew) and stress free sailing. Many of their crew would remember our names to boot. All areas of the Sun were never crowded during both day and night activities. Alcoves to sit and talk without the din of crowds of other passengers was very welcome. No one pushing drinks constantly around the pool areas. What will keep us coming back is the absence of any photographers, no casino, and, sorry grandpa-ma, NO KIDS. The ship is QUIET. We are seniors, and the mega-ships being launched lately hold no appeal for us. Food is plentiful and healthful, but we avoid packing on the pounds by not ever taking the ship's elevators and walking extensively each day. Not many others did, as we usually had the walking deck to ourselves! Viking is the best value out there, bar none. Sorry again, no water slides! Read Less

This was my first venture across the Atlantic. My husband was in service and had visited some of the countries 50 years ago. When I suggested this cruise, he was interested to see what, if anything, had changed. We chose a pre cruise extension in Rome which was amazing. We spent two days exploring with visits to the Colosseum and Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, shopping and restaurants. Our hotel was convenient to everything. The major positive of this experience was the fact that Viking was so organized, their employees very gracious, and the follow-up phone call from Vic was unexpected. We did not have one complaint about anything. We truly enjoyed our stewards - Viveck and Rinaldi (I hope I spelled their names correctly). We got to meet and enjoy the company of the entertainers: Tina, Shaun, Josh and Amelia. Truly exceptional voices and so friendly. Overall the entertainment was unbelievable including Minky G and her guitar. Enjoyed talking with Alex in Torshavn, and Suzannah in the SPA. The dining experience was beyond expectation. The tour guides on the shore excursions were so informative which enhanced the shore excursions' experiences. The people we met during our free time in the different countries were so nice to us. And of course, our ship, The Viking Sun, was fabulous. We did a one day post extension in Paris which was so memorable. While we got to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night, we were disappointed that we didn't have time to experience the Louvre except by night by taking photographs. I wish we could have done two days in Paris. My husband's sister and her husband have traveled several times with Viking River Cruises. They praised Viking for their attentiveness and graciousness. We would like to also "pay it forward" with our compliments to Viking, the crew, and the whole fabulous experience. Read Less

The Viking Sun is an absolutely gorgeous ship, furnished with Norwegian taste which is sleek and elegant in nautical blue and silver-beige. The public spaces are large and comfortable and beautiful, and don't seem crowded because there are so many of them. Free access to high-end spa featuring Nordic options like a heated mineral water spa, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and snow room. The crew knows how to show you a good time and make it seem effortless. Food was extraordinary, with several restaurants to choose from, and menus that varied every day featuring local items like tapas while in Spain. Room service is also available 24 hours. And the excursions were managed efficiently and hosted by the best local tour guides. There is an included excursion in every port, plus many optional ones to choose from. Being in the Mediterranean in the off season was delightful. My friends commented that our photos showed well because they sights weren't overcrowded like they are in the summer months. Western Mediterranean Cruise, 12 nights. Traveling solo. Rome to Lisbon Shore excursions were very good. Guides knew their subject matter. Viking Sun staff needs to recognize and treat solo passengers the same as other passengers. Except for one experience, dining staff were negligent and offhand to me as a solo passenger. At one dinner I was literally taken to the last table in the dining room, past all the other empty tables (I was early). I asked what was wrong with those tables. I was told they were for "the other passengers". Obviously I did not take that table. And I won't be cruising with Viking again. Generally recommended Mediterranean ports, eastern and western: Rome - a great walkable city Florence - spend time in the museums Valencia - very pretty Greek Islands - any of them, all beautiful Istanbul - see the Blue Mosque Malaga - see the Moorish architecture Read Less

Future booking are inevitable. We want to sail the world with Viking!!! All of the excursions were so informative and thought/organized so well. On board entertainment nightly and the bar service was grand. All on board service was from breakfast/lunch/dinner was outstanding. I just can't say enough of the service, meals, onboard ship persons and utmost service from all. Spa, pools and on board amenities are a huge factor on why we booked along with only 940 guests on the ship. Food and dining was so fabulous with lobster, Peking duck, shrimp, steaks/filets, fresh vegetables and amazing deserts....so much variety that you can choose from. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and we had enjoyed our Viking river cruise several years ago. Also, we booked when Viking was offering reduced air. We loved the ship and especially ou cabin. We were upgraded from deluxe to veranda a bout a week before cruise. We did not really care for dining in main restaurant. Service was very slow - not waiters fault- they just had too many tables to service. We have done a lot of cruising and prefer confirmed dining at same table with same waiters at same time (for dinner). We also missed the evening shows in the theater. The included excursions were tooearly for us, so we even missed the one optional that we paid for. We go on cruises to relax , and hurrying thru breakfast to get on a bus just wasn’t appealing. The air schedule was great going to Rome from Atlanta. Returning was a nightmare!!! We flew from Barcelona to JFK. OMG - what a horrible airport. Luckily we had a four hour layover - it took us almost three hours to maneuver customs , going thru security again and then our gate changed twice. We had to go outside and get a bus their to take us to correct terminal. A very nice ship but a bit disappointing. We had hoped to do Danube next year but not sure now. Read Less

My wife and I booked cabin 5083 originally, a penthouse veranda, as she was worried about motion sickness. A few days before the cruise was to depart, Our travel agent said that Viking had upgraded us to cabin 8007, a jr. penthouse suite. After reading several reviews of the 8000 series cabins, all but one cruiser stated that they felt no or minimal motion on that deck. Apparently my wife is a little more susceptible to motion as we left Rome at 10pm to cruise to Livorno and my wife slept poorly. We spent two days in port and she was better, but as we left Livorno at 6pm for Monaco, the motion sickness became so bad she didn't sleep and we had to see the ship's doctor(an $85 fee) to get motion sickness pills. We missed the Monaco excursion, but Viking refunded the cost. We asked if we could move to a lower deck and since the ship was almost full, we took cabin 3031, a veranda stateroom. Viking stated that they would not refund the difference for what we paid for the original room and the lower grade room since it was a motion sickness issue. Between the pills and the lower cabin, we were able to finish the cruise in relative comfort. As many others have stated, the ship is beautiful, clean, and well maintained.Cabins were cleaned twice a day, no one asked us to but anything, and all staff members were friendly and courteous. Food was excellent and, plentiful, and varied. My only complaint with dining was that after my wife had a glass of coke with lunch or dinner, she was not offered a refill. The included shore excursions we took were rather dull and short; we took a few long optional excursions and enjoyed them. We enjoyed the Beatles and ABBA shows, but outside of those, there was not a lot of entertainment unless you like classical pieces or acoustic guitar solos. Singers in Torshaven, the night lounge, did a nice enough job though. I did spend a lot of time in the spa which is extremely well kept and is probably one of the best at sea. Read Less

Wanted to visit friends in Barcelona and coupled this trip with seeing them after the ship docked there. Good ports -of-call with interesting sights to see. The only issue was the weather, which we had hoped would not be a major factor. But is was. Lots of rain in this trip. The ship provided many great tours. The staff were attentive and friendly. The entertainment was super. Enjoyed the tours, which were both educational as well as interedting. One tour had an inexperienced guide who miscounted at the meeting place and left us behind. This made for a difficult time for us. We enjoyed meeting new people in the ship and touring the kitchen and Bridge were a real highlight. The food was exceptional and varied. The restaurants were terrific and the food was fantastic. We did not make it to the Italian restaurant as we did not know about it at first and then found it was booked solid. This speaks for itself. The ship was beautiful in every way. We enjoyed the seafood meal on the upper deck near the pool and went to several 4 o’clock teas. This was relaxing and fun. Thank you. I retired in January 2018 and this TRIP was my retirement cruise. What a great way to start off my retirement. Everyone was very friendly. Hard working staff. The shore excursions were top notch! Our transportation to and from the ship was pleasant and non stressful. Embarkation was easy. The ship arranged transportation for 10 of us to our hotel with ease. We were pleased with the great service. The meals were delicious and the staff was very accommodating to our food sensitivity. We found the lounge areas very calming and peaceful. I thought the entertainment was a pleasant surprise. Thumbs up to the staff! It was nice to have a balcony that was actually larger than I had anticipated. My biggest surprise was the size of the bathroom. Never expected it to be that big. Not to forget the washroom had a heated floor!! Thank you Viking for making my retirement cruise one to remember. We decided we wanted to see some of Europe while we were still mobile. We are in our late 60's! We heard from several friends who had great experiences on Viking River Cruises, but also we wanted an ocean cruise. Viking's Iconic Western Mediterranean's itinerary was compatible with our interests and dates we were available. The start date also was the date of our friends wedding anniversary, so they joined us as well to celebrate their special event. We decided to book the Penthouse Veranda and splurge at bit. Our friends chose the Deluxe Veranda! We were so glad we chose the Penthouse Veranda as it was a much larger stateroom with plenty of storage for our luggage. It also had a stocked liquor mini frig with beer, wine, and hard liquor as well as candies. The frig was stocked frequently! Scotch Whiskey was stocked, but I prefer bourbon. The room stewards were unable to accommodate a request for bourbon, but that was perhaps one of my only disappointments. We were spoiled though by the stateroom stewards. Two are assigned to each room and your room was tidied up every time we stepped out. Every aspect of our trip was a delight, from the aspect of no children to the food quality and service. Excursions we chose perfect, both free and purchased! Viking has their act together! Only recommendation would be fewer ports and longer stays in each port. Barcelona, our last port, was our favorite and we left with a desire to revisit that wonderful city! Awesome entertainment and Viking is so organized with all activities as well and embarkation and disembarking. Oh,as a side note, a friend who recommended Viking received a $200 cruise credit and we received one when we also recommended Viking to a friend! If we were to do over, we would add more time before and after at those ports! Read Less

Loved the information we could access on room television. We did not take advantage of the ship's entertainment activities as we did as many tours as possible. Although I loved the Beatles show! The guest services personnel ARE not informed of the various tours available & "waitlist " you if a tour is full. Waitlist means nothing other than you'd like to book it but can't. We were having lunch approximately 5 minutes of arriving at the cruise terminal. Ship is beautiful, food was fantastic no crowds. I enjoyed every second. Loved the high quality Viking offers. The first night in the restaurant was one of the best meals in recient memory. The buffet for dinner was also fantastic. Lots of choices, king crab legs etc. they also set up a cooking station outside grilling fish and various meats. They also have great cappuccino machines. The room is very well designed with lots of room and first run movies My only complaint and hopefully it’s not a trend to start charging extra is they are charging $10 for fitness classes that used to be included. Getting off the last morning was so nice. We hate the other cruise lines that have thousands of rude passengers pushing and shoving all trying to leave at once. They wanted you out of your room by 8 am and off the ship at your leasure by 9:45. Viking might charge more than the bigger cruise lines but I think it’s more than worth it. Read Less

We were especially happy that Viking provided plenty of education and information prior to touring each city on the cruise. We left feeling we knew so much more about the country and people. Our friends were a little disappointed with the reservation system for purchasing tours due to the fact there was limitation on numbers which did not allow us to choose the same tours for all of us on certain stops. They also were frustrated that exceptions were not made to accommodate adjustment to our tour schedules in order to allow us to be together even though we tried to call ahead of time within the guide lines and timelines. The consumer service department did help us at the last minute to grab a couple of spots on one of our tours and that was very helpful. We understand the priorities based on type of cabin, but the most popular options might be better to add additional seats rather than limit them based on a fixed number. Despite this issue we felt all the tour guides were very good and well prepared to deliver a quality tour experience. The buses and destinations for the most part were great and gave us a nice picture of the culture and people living in Italy. The entertainment was very good, however might have been geared more for an older group as we are all in our late 50s and early 60s and would like to see a bit more variety. Overall, however, we enjoyed most of the shows especially the opera night. We were very impressed with the detail to service throughout the entire boat. We had no bad service during the cruise and enjoyed being pampered during our stay. We plan use Viking every other year to allow us to tour more parts of the world. We feel that the cost is the only thing keeping us from traveling with you every year. We would have probably booked another trip, but we did not understand the savings of booking while on the boat until late in the process. We did not have time to get with your people and discuss due to the busy schedule at the end of the trip. Hats off to all the hard working people on the Viking ship!! we had a great time. Read Less
