We chose this cruise in hopes of seeing the elusive Northern Lights. We were so lucky as we saw them on four or five different nights. Our best views were from the ship after leaving Narvik. We cruised from Bergen to Tilbury on the Viking Star February 15 through February 27th. We have been on over 50 cruises but this was our first on Viking. We were surprised with the uncrowded open spaces. Service was exceptional. Food was good. The ship was beautifully furnished. Our stateroom was attractive, convenient and well planned. Public Areas The Star's public rooms are lovely. It is the most uncrowded ship we have seen. There are three floors of open area around the atrium with an abundance of seating areas, game tables and cocktail tables and also a big puzzle table and Viking heritage items and photos. There is no designated game room but people were invited to play cards or Mah Jong in the Chef's Table. Scrabble and others games were available. We had been on the Caribbean Princess in October in Canada. It was cold and windy so no one used the pool decks. You couldn’t find a seat anywhere on the Caribbean Princess. Great entertainment but no room. Another issue on that ship was there was only a handful of kids so all that room was wasted. At the other end of the spectrum from the CP is the Viking Star - uncrowded, lovely Scandinavian style and great service. The pool area is firmly covered in winter. There is much available seating there also. We usually travel with friends or family. All this roominess would truly be used and appreciated when traveling with a big group. The workout room is well equip and was never crowded. With a total of 930 passengers no line was ever long, no area was ever crowded. Dining The main dining room is the Restaurant. My husband and I were traveling alone. We were always asked if we wanted a shared table. Most of those are for six people. Tables for two are grouped closely together by threes so we always visited with our table neighbors which was really enjoyable. We met many people because of the Restaurant set up. Our fellow travelers were mostly Americans but there were many from Australia and England. The food was good but not exceptional, the included wine was mostly just okay. Some of it was quite good. We realized on the last night that some people had found an included wine they really enjoyed and asked for it specifically. Manfredi's is a wonderful Italian restaurant. The sole and chicken Parmigiana were delicious. Loved everything I tried. I forgot to book this ahead so I was afraid we couldn’t get in but we got a shared or individual table each time we asked. The buffet and pool grill had great food. You could take pool grill food into the buffet or eat near the pool where there are many, many tables. I am missing the fabulous strawberry sorbet I enjoyed repeatedly. Service We have been on over 50 cruises. The service on the Viking Star was exceptional. Our room stewards Juan Carlos and Vee were the best ever. They were so attentive. Our suite was always perfectly clean and welcoming. They were friendly and seemed happy which many room stewards are not. They kept our bottled water stocked and ice bucket full. Housekeeping on the whole ship was very good. Maybe since we traveled as the novel Coronavirus was first leaving China, we saw hand rails cleaned repeatedly. Every thing was spotless. My only suggestion would to have crew members do all the serving at the buffet. In all restaurants they were insistent on using the alcohol sprayers on our hands. When we boarded the Viking Star on February 15th we were given a health interview as well as the usual health form. We also had our temperature taken. The Northern Lights We were so very fortunate to see the Northern Lights on four or five nights that we were above the Arctic Circle. It was amazing. The best event was the night we left Narvik. The sky was clear with the Big Dipper visible through the extraordinary, ever changing lights. Entertainment The on-ship entertainment was fine. The guitarist, Paulo, was exceptional. The ship band was really talented. They accompanied everyone who performed in the theater. We enjoyed the group of four who danced and sang with the ship band several evenings. We watched one show twice! Quite often a talented pianist or two violinists were performing in the atrium. The TV set up was really good too. So many on-demand options were available which was great when we couldn’t get a satellite signal to support live TV. The included internet worked every day. It generally wasn’t strong enough to download pictures. My husband was able to stay in touch with his office through email the whole trip. The included excursions were mostly riding on a bus to see the areas. We were able to go inside the very unusual church in Alta and went to a museum with a great planetarium style theater with a beautiful display of Northern Lights Film. We wanted to see the outside area with ancient indigenous stone carvings but snow covered them. There are some on display inside the museum. We did the Pulpit Rock cruise in the Lysefjord from Stavenger. It took most of our scheduled stop in Stavenger. The town was so pretty we wished we had explored the town instead. Stavenger has an oil museum that we would have enjoyed seeing. The cruise was in a huge, enclosed ferry with a whole lot of people. The fjord was very pretty. Our stop in Bodo was cancelled due to rough weather. This seemed a very smart move as I think that’s where the Viking Sky got into trouble last year. Our reindeer sled ride was fun and memorable. We enjoyed meeting a few Sami people there and getting up close with the reindeer. Some fellow travelers were fascinating. One lady who had to be well into her 80s was traveling alone. The little Australian put on her short snow boots and heavy coat to walk at each stop. She would take an included excursion and then hop off to explore on her own. i don’t think I will be so fearless in 20 or 30 years. Or now! All the towns except Tromsø kept their streets and sidewalks mostly clear of snow and ice. Tromsø was treacherous. I would recommend wearing boots with great traction or attaching ice cleats. Disembarkation was smooth and quick. I highly recommend this ship and this itinerary. This was our first Viking cruise. We will sail with them again. We were on Caribbean Princess in Canada in October and Disney Magic in the Caribbean in November. I plan to avoid the Caribbean Princess in the future. The weather was chilly and windy so no one was on the pool decks which drove all the passengers inside. Princess has wasted so much space with their “art gallery”, shops and casino that all the public areas were extremely and uncomfortably overcrowded. Viking has taken the opposite approach. They have only three small shops (clothes, essentials and jewelry) and no casino or art sales. The specialty restaurants have no up charge. No photographer is trying to snap your picture to sell to you later. Unlimited and included wine and beer are available at lunch and dinner. Each port has one included (generally lackluster) excursion. One of our paid excursions was cancelled due to weather so Viking owed us money at the end of the cruise. Read Less

Over the past 35 years my wife and I have been on over 25 ocean cruises. We had sailed with 4 other cruise lines, but this is the first Viking Ocean Cruise. We chose Viking as they have a ship with a great deal fewer passengers. Not that my wife and I have anything against being with a large group of people, but we were looking for a less busy, noisy cruise and we thought with less passengers that is what we would get. One of the reasons we enjoy cruising is because we love meeting folks. I must admit: YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE ON A VIKING OCEAN CRUISE!!! The people we met were people that we would want to met again and even spend more time with outside of the cruise. To begin; as soon as we walked on board the Viking Sky we knew we had made a good decision. The decor was relaxing yet very up scale. The entire ship made you feel very comfortable yet special as well. We felt this way the entire cruise. The cuisine was some of the finest, it was available at each meal, and it was available not only in the Main Dinning space, and specialty restaurants but at the buffet as well. The food was not only great, but the service was excellent as well. If you have not sailed on Viking I would strongly urge you to BOOK IT now and you will not regret it!! What really sold me was that we often saw the various ships officers including the ships captain eating beside us. In addition when you sail on Viking they include an excursion, usually at each port. My wife and I took those offered and enjoyed each one. The guides who lead the tours were very informative. Last, but certainly not least is the ships crew: One of the best my wife and I have experienced on any cruise previously. I even got to speak with the head chef as well as the ships captain when they were moving about the ship. All the crew, from the cabin stewards to the captain were open and friendly as well as doing an excellent job! Bottom line: We will make Viking our number one choice when it comes time to explore the world from a ship. We are seriously looking at the Viking River Cruises as well as from most of the passengers we did meet most had also been on a river cruise and were very positive on how we would enjoy them as well! Viking Star sailed to Norway above the Arctic Circle and gave us the opportunity to realize a dream and experience the northern lights. And we did see them--TWICE! We most enjoyed the optional excursion to visit the Sami people in their wilderness camp and go on a romantic reindeer sleigh ride underneath a full moon. We loved the Viking Star and the comfort of the Explorer's Lounge, the fantastic food in all the restaurants, the fitness and yoga rooms, the lectures and learning opportunity, the entertainment, and friendly and efficient staff and crew. Your ceremony for initiating us into the Blue Nose Society to celebrate the Arctic Circle crossing was fun and delightful. The included bus tours were very good. I especially liked the Alta Cathedral and Borealis Alta exhibit, and Alta Museum and rock carvings. Tromso tour was good, but wished we could have gone inside the Arctic Cathedral. The Planetarium visit was also a highlight. We enjoyed all 4 Lecturers. The two best were Ian Ridpath and Tim Hodges was informative about photos. I learned about Vikings from Dr. Bazin, and conservation from Professor Mazour. We celebrated Ken's birthday on board ship and thank you so much for supplying the sparkling wine and birthday cake. It made him feel special and gave him a birthday to remember. The treadmills in the fitness center need to be serviced and calibrated. Include in brocure that clamp on for your shoes are necessary for this time of year. Sami excurstion should go straight to the camp in the day light instead of diverting to sight seeing the fjoids waste of time. Sleigh ride should be in the day light. Read Less

My husband and I have always wanted to see Norway. We both have Norwegian DNA. It is also a place that neither one of us has been before. The ship and our cabin were immaculate. Our cabin stewards anticipated our every need. All of the Viking employees were wonderful. We enjoyed the port talks and all the lectures they offered. Our favorite excursion was the husky dog sleds. We also got to see the National Reindeer Races in Tromso! We missed going into Bodo and seeing the maelstrom because the seas were too rough. We understand that safety is first and we appreciate that. We were told that the ship hasn’t been able to get into Bodo in months so I would think they would re-evaluate that destination and maybe add another one. We are grandparents and love children but we very much enjoyed that there were no children on board. I also enjoyed no casino, smaller number of passengers and smaller boat. It enabled us to meet so many new people. We loved Bergen and would have enjoyed more time there. We enjoyed all of our tour guides although the guide on the way to Polar Park concentrated on global warming and her mental health which was not what we expected to hear on a one hour bus ride. We would have enjoyed hearing more about Norway and the area we were riding through. We absolutely loved our cruise and it was the first time we have done Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. Previously have had three cruises with Cunard. This fared better for us as there were no formal nights. Had two nights at the Chefs table and two at Manfredi’s an Italian themed restaurant. The food and service was excellent in every respect including the buffet restaurant. Dining outside at the Aquavit was particularly enjoyable and the themed evenings were a bonus where the chefs cooked outside. The ship is very modern and very tastefully adorned with its Viking theme. It was unobtrusively cleaned to a high standard. Our stateroom was pristine at all times. All staff were courteous, friendly and professional at all times. As soon as we arrived at San Juan Airport we were met by Viking staff who kept us fully informed of the procedure for embarkation and we had the same experience when it came time to leave. The entertainment in the theatre was excellent, we particularly liked the ABBA and Beatles themed evenings. There was also a classical pianist and a violin duo, both very competent and played alternatively in the Atrium. This was adjacent a bar where you could either sit and talk or relax in lounge seating and listen to their music. Dancing under the stars and the Steel band were both thoroughly enjoyable. A very good range of excursions was on offer. All professionally executed. What we particularly liked was that the ship was not too large, there were no casinos, no children under 18, no gratuities, excursions included and the silver drinks package. We enjoyed this cruise immensely and have no hesitation in recommending Viking to our friends. Read Less

We enjoyed Viking Reine cruise and wanted to try Viking Ocean cruise. Viking handled our flights, and transfers which went smoothly. The smaller Viking Sky was particularly enjoyable for us compared to the many larger cruise vessels we have sailed on with other companies. All the support crew - housekeeping, bar and restaurant staff, and Customer Service staff, were particularly friendly and courteous. The entertainers - classical violin and cello, and piano, were superb and to our taste in relaxing music. The gym was good. While small, it served me well and was not crowded. Looked at the beautiful Spa but did not take advantage of it, as we were too occupied with other activities. We did a shore excursion at each of the six ports and we found every one educationally interesting. Our interest in Archeology was sated with visits to many Mayan ruins, and the geographic differences in the smaller Carribean countries was also of interest. The on-board restaurants were top notch. Having the options of the specialty restaurants as well as the dining restaurant and buffet, make meal time choices difficult as they were ALL excellent in terms of quality diversity, and service. The whole trip was run smoothly by Viking from end to end. We will certainly take advantage of another Viking adventure in future. One suggestion we have is that some cruises we have been on offer ATM Cash Machine service on Board. This cruise did not. As we did excursions at every port, there was not always time to find an ATM on shore. As we wanted to provide adequate gratuities to the excursion guides and drivers, it was sometime a struggle having adequate cash on hand without an ATM. An ATM on board the Viking Sky would be an added value service. Read Less

Selected this cruise line after much research. We are in our 60's and wanted an experience that was easy, comfortable and well planned. We splurged and went for a Penthouse Jr Suite that turned out to be better than we had expected. Plenty of room for two people to lounge around in with outstanding views from the large veranda. The added perks to a room like this were very fun, they do your laundry (nice to come home with clean clothes) , supply a fully stocked bar daily and the restaurant tables available were outstanding. We are not the most social type of people and found that it was a perfect blend where one could blend in without having to engage unless you wanted to. We were very surprised at the quality of the food available . Healthy choices were always available and this will probably be one of the main reason we return to this cruise line. Another important concept that we were impressed with is how much "everything" is included...no nickel & dimeing here! Wine/beer generously served at lunch & dinner, popcorn at the theater and all amenities though out the ship. This being our first cruise we picked some pretty tame excursions and usually had a great experience, would not be shy about trying more exotic ones next time. A notable point was how clean and well planned this ship was...we came away with the thought that this is exactualy what a cruise should be like...they do virtually everything right. Although it was expensive we both thought that we got our money's worth and are already thinking about where we will go next !! Read Less

We decided to escape winter for a bit and took our second Viking ocean cruise because of the great itinerary.....2 nights in Puerto Rico and a port a day. It didn't disappoint, with perfect weather. We had included bus transfer from our hotel to the port, and the embarkation was the simplest ever....we walked up to a table and they gave us our room keys and tickets for our shore excursions. The ship is for adults, elegant and easy to explore. Our cabin was ready early and it already had our luggage in it. We had a deluxe veranda cabin on deck 4 and it was comfortable and spotless. There is a lack of drawer space, but the bathroom is very spacious. Our cabin attendant, Michael, was unobtrusive but was always there for us if we needed anything. I loved the soft, squishy pillows but my husband wanted a firmer one, and it was provided almost immediately. The breakfast and lunch buffets had a varied assortment of food and the pool grill had good burgers and a salad bar. We ate dinner most nights in The Restaurant and the food was uniformly good. It was especially nice having a destination menu every night. The service seemed more harried than our last cruise, it seems like they have less staff because our first 3 waiters didn't even have time to introduce themselves, talk about the food or check back with us. We finally found Singh and Azri, who were excellent. We had the beverage package, so the sommelier, Enea was very helpful and knowledgeable making recommendations from the premium wines. We ate 2 nights at the Chef's Table and both meals and wine pairings were delicious. Mamsen's during the day has delicious desserts. The entertainers on-board were all talented, especially the Viking Band and the guitar player Pablo. We would listen to them every night in Torshavn and they played a wide range of music with no repeats in their set-lists, unless they had a request. It was fantastic not hearing the same songs over and over. They were some of the most talented musicians we've seen and really made the cruise for us. The optional shore excursions were fun, especially the Secret Sand Beach Break in St. Thomas. It was the one of the most relaxing, peaceful beaches we've been to. We like that there is a container for wet towels when you get back on-board and that water is provided as you leave the ship. We had an issue with one of our other shore excursions and it was resolved more than satisfactorily right away. We really appreciated the excellent customer service. We had a small Meet and Mingle in the Wintergarden and Viking did a great job. It was nice to meet so many officers and the appetizers and drinks were very tasty. The fitness center is very clean and the included spa saunas and pool and worth doing. The staff and service are what make Viking cruises so excellent. The people are helpful and friendly and we hated to leave them. We have 2 more ocean cruises booked with them. Read Less

A smaller cruise ship ( about 900 guests). Although the ship was almost at capacity, never felt like it. Excellent friendly service....great food, wonderful experience. We chose it for the itinerary and were pleased with every port. Rough seas made it necessary to divert, missing a port, but adding a fjord, so we were pleased. This is our first Viking Ocean cruise experience and we loved it, clearly the focus is on providing service and a great experience, as opposed to selling and up selling, as has been our experience on other cruise ships. The staff appear to enjoy their jobs - have noticed true team work and staff going beyond the “job” on many occasions - we can feel the positive atmosphere. All port guides have been interesting, engaging and very knowledgeable. Friendly and helpful. We choose cruises according to itineraries- and have been on many cruise lines. Viking is on the top of our list. Read Less

Viking Orion was fun we always felt welcome and were treated with utmost respect, from the Captain to the people who cleaned our rooms. They are very happy people who love their jobs and they show it with warm smiles and conversations. The Cruise Director, Brian R. was multi talented and it was a joy to hear him and his wonderful team of entertainers sing. Back to cleanliness, ever minute I was on the ship everywhere we went the staff was cleaning and I must say I felt very safe onboard. We chose this cruise because we had been on a Viking River Cruise the previous year and really enjoyed it. Viking had the best ratings. Almost everything about the trip was wonderful. The ship was beautiful, staff was super friendly and helpful. The stateroom was exceptionally comfortable and well designed so that there was plenty of closet and drawer space. The ship was also very clean and well maintained. The food at all the restaurants was also excellent. With the Chef's Table being the best. Even the buffet restaurant was the best we tasted anywhere, compared to other ships on which we have sailed. What was lacking was good entertainment. The cruise director, Brensley, did one excellent show. She had a beautiful voice. There were four other singers who did shows, and they were very amateurish. The resident historian was very knowledgeable, informative and interesting. The tours were interesting also, but we would have liked a little more time on our own in each port. All in all, it was a very enjoyable trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise while on another Viking ocean cruise. We received several perks (cruise credits for current & future cruise, Silver beverage package & discounts) for immediate booking. We were elated with the entire experience from start to finish! Our Viking agent helped with air transportation and notified us of any airline scheduling changes made after initial booking. The transfer from airport to ship was seamless & comfortable. We explored Valparaíso by taking the optional Artists Tour, and again we were enthralled by the kindness, quality and craft of the talented artists. Embarkation was seamless for us. Our room was ready. Our Cabin Stewards, Danica and Jeremy greeted us and introduced us to our new surroundings. They were a team that worked well together & were able to help us address minor cabin maintenance issues with immediate follow up. The Viking Jupiter is new. It is beautiful. Though we had a couple days of rough waters on the Pacific my motion-sickness prone companion did not become ill. Executive decisions were made to not complete the passage around Cape Horn and we recognized their buy in to safety first. It was appreciated by us. Whether dining at the Restaurant buffet, Mamsen’s or reserving with Manfredi’s or the Chef’s Table, our dining experiences were 5-Star. Wine sommeliers Daniel, Valaria, & Omega we’re indeed extraordinary in their descriptions of wine profiles and food matches to entice our palates. The food prep, temperature and spices were just right. Playing was beautiful. Salads were consistently fresh, flavorful and if dressed, the dressing was adequate. I personally enjoyed immensely the educational seminars by our invited educators and the historian in residence. I learned so very much about culture, economy, topography, government and their current issues. For me, this was a highlight. I’m not much into shows but I loved the classical duets and piano pieces played in the atrium. We made at least one shore excursion at every port. I appreciated the learning, though some local guides were clearly better than others. We ventured out some on our own as well, and that too made for a great cultural experience. We also tried the Nordic bathing ritual. In that hands of the Scandinavian professional, Elena (?) we learned how to relax and clean deeply. Unfortunately, the non-Scandinavian hair dresser did not know what she was doing. Her massages caused pain for some of us, and in fact one older gentleman yelped and added, “That hurt!” . It was our only “miss”. We have now signed up for 2 more Viking cruises as a result of our largely terrific experiences. Read Less

I would recommend this tour to anyone. We had one day at sea that was rough but we survived it okay. The Christmas decorations were very tasteful on the ship. The food was superb. I loved the fact that I could try lots of different items and did not have to clean my plate or feel too full. We could order 24/7 room service which was so nice. I liked the fact we had time at each place for a little walk on our own. I very much liked the shopping on board. The onboard shopping was something to look forward to each day one hour after the ship sailed. If I did it again, I would add on a few extra days either in the beginning or at the end. The Viking embarkation and disembarkation process were fast, efficient, no hassle, no long lines. From the luggage area to and from the airport, Viking representatives were always at hand. Such a smooth and relaxing process! Everywhere at the ship, cabin, spa, dining areas, evidently portrayed ELEGANCE and LUXURY! Our penthouse veranda cabin was always kept clean and the refrigerator stacked with water, sodas and snacks. Our room stewards were always on their toes! So impressed with their efficiency. The Atrium Bar and Explorer’s Lounge were our favorite hangouts due to their excellent service! We were constantly at the Atrium Bar to order drinks and stay for an hour or two talking to other guests, and to amazing Carlos and his wonderful staff. The classical music was much appreciated. Pablo, the incredible guitarist, was our favorite entertainer. The tea time was a great addition to a relaxing afternoon. Dressy casual was required at all dining venues and at the theater except at the World Cafe. We appreciated the complimentary excursions. The sites were well planned and the guides were so knowledgeable. Viking’s high standards far exceeded our expectations! The best service we ever encountered in a cruise line. Viking's West Indies Explorer was just the kind of cruise we were looking for. We like to spend more than one day in a particular area, which is hard to do on many cruises. The Lower Antilles brings a series of Caribbean destinations together in close proximity so we never completely left the islands, and we were able to visit a different one every day. Perfect! Viking always offer an included excursion in every port. These always seem to focus on local geography, scenic points, and local culture. These are often not extensive in duration, so Viking arranges some much more immersive tours starting with some reasonably priced excursions into natural areas, historic landmarks sometimes recognized as UNESCO World Heritage site, or local industry or artists. For a bit extra we stepped up to a few more indulgent tours involving some great sailing on a catamaran, or special local cuisine. Every cabin has a veranda, so we always had a quiet place with a fresh breeze to relax for an hour or just for fifteen minutes. The standard cabins aren't terribly large, but we never felt like we were cramped - the bath was arranged so effectively that even the shower had plenty of room. So much better than some of our cruises on other lines. The ship, of course, was beautiful - there's something very simple and clean about Scandinavian design. It's pretty much our definition of elegant. Viking's open buffet dining is about the best of any line we've tried, and the main restaurant always offers the opportunity to meet new people or have a quiet dinner as a couple. Every passenger has the opportunity to book one or more meals in a smaller specialized restaurant. The Italian dishes in Mancuso's are among the best we've had anywhere, and we've found some pretty wonderful places in Rome and New York. Somehow we overlooked booking before our trip but a young lady named Grace, on the restaurant staff, persistently watched for an opening to get us in and called to tell us. The service of the Viking staff is consistently excellent, and you can see that they're always happy to make you feel welcome. This was our third Viking cruise, the first was along the rivers of central Europe, and the second in the western Mediterranean. Not a hint of disappointment with any of them. When I finally retire, we'll certainly take a few more. Read Less

The cruise hit the locations I wanted to visit. Super itinerary, excellent food and service. The alternative gourmet selections, especially the Chefs Table, were excellent. Shipboard internet access was reliable. Great lectures, especially historic perspectives, scientific topics and educational lectures. The crew was reliable and friendly, and most helpful in assisting with excursions, dining reservations, etc. The captain’s frequent updates on the ship’s location, weather, etc. was very welcome. Our Stateroom steward was very attentive and helpful, and he kept our stateroom clean and comfortable, and would often provide useful advice. The physical fitness facilities were first class (and used often). Spa facilities were excellent. Disembarking and security procedures at ports of call were handled professionally and smoothly. The shore excursions, both inclusive and optional, were well designed for maximum effect. I would also like to commend the very effective way Viking handled pre and post cruise accommodations, air travel and administrative issues. I will definitely choose Viking ocean cruises in the future. Read Less

As expected from our experiences with Viking River Cruises, this was five stars all the way, from transfers to and from the airport, to luggage handling, to greeting on the ship. We stayed in a deluxe veranda, which is one of the smaller suites, but still had plenty of room and a fabulously comfortable king size bed. Besides, who wants to stay in the room? LOVED that there were only 900 passengers - it makes disembarking at ports uncrowded. We appreciated that this was not a “party cruise” - no casino, for instance. And no passengers under the age if 18 !! nstead there were lots of interesting lectures: a naturalist, a historian, a travel writer, and an astronaut on board to give talks. The food was (as expected) wonderful: a buffet style restaurant with live grilling, a Norwegian deli, a pool bar with grill, a table service restaurant with ever changing menu and (one of our favourite things) open seating so you could eat as a couple or meet different people each night. In the afternoon, the upper deck Wintergarden served full English cream tea. The 2 specialty restaurants (no extra charge) were fantastic: Manfredi’s Italian, and The Chef’s Table. We especially enjoyed the curated menus at the latter. On sea days, there was also a pop-up restaurant on the pool deck: the king crab day was spectacular! Christmas Eve’s chocolate buffet in the “Living Room” was amazing - chocolate sculptures highlighting thousands of delicious treats. We were also on board for NYE, which was a fantastic party, followed by an amazing NY Day brunch. Entertainment included music everywhere (grand pianos in 3 places, classical string duo, acoustic guitar, and nightly shows by both the onboard talent and acts flown in from Vegas!! The ports of call and included excursions were carefully chosen to give us a taste of the “real” South America, but side excursions were also offered to the more well-known tourist attractions like Macchu Pichu. Must mention the fabulous fitness facilities and Nordic spa (with a snow room!), as well as terrific estheticians, massage therapists, and wellness instructors. Overall a fantastic trip. The 27 days were over too soon. It really was an excellent adventure! Read Less

Why did we choose this cruise? Honestly, it was a last minute decision based on a really good price offered by Viking. We have been on two River Cruises with Viking, and knew that Viking was 5 star all the way. We were not disappointed. The ship was lovely, our room was perfect, and the amenities on the ship were stellar. Particularly, we enjoyed dining at the Chef’s Table. The multi-course menu with wine pairings was something we had never experienced before. And, they change the menu every 3 or 4 days. We also enjoyed the smaller ship with less than 1000 passengers, and adults only environment. Our cruise director, Vicki Van Tassel was also outstanding. She organized some outstanding entertainment. We were on board over Christmas and New Year’s and Viking arranged outstanding Chocolate buffets on Christmas Eve, and an amazing brunch on New Year’s Day. We will certainly cruise with Viking again. Overall the cruise and vacation in totality was a dream vacation. The ship is new and sleek. It's beautiful appointed. The staff are all well trained, friendly and utterly professional. The itinerary was amazing. The problems in Chile are not Viking's fault, but the social unrest did curb our activities in Porte Montt, Valparaiso and Santiago. That said, there was an excursion for everyone. We enjoyed ours. There was a mass of people at the Buenos Aires ship terminal, but there was a Viking representative on hand to walk us through the crowds straight to the front of the line. Viking confidently took possession of our baggage at curbside. Our stateroom really could have been a wee bit bigger. Compared to Cunard, the room was too small. The area between he wall and the end of the king size bed was really just too tight, and there is no tub like Oceana offers. Some luxury lines offer tubs, some offer bigger rooms, Viking didn't do either. Other than the size of our stateroom our only other complaint, except for the last day in Santiago (See below), is about the dress code. Viking either needs to change the dress code and all their advertising including videos - or enforce it. Some of the people showed up to dinner in t-shirts. Flip flops with rhinestones on them aren't "smart casual". Many of the people had on hiking sandals and cargo, baggy shorts/capris in the evening at least at the beginning of the cruise. The food was wonderful. We enjoyed the Chef's Table and Manfredis, but frankly the quality, service and variety of food available in The Resturant was sufficient that we only ate at in the speciality restaurants a few times outside our initial bookings in them. We ate breakfast occasionally in the Explorer's Lounge's little, unknown resturant called Mamsum's (sp). The waffles are to die for! The afternoon sandwiches are delicate and much lighter than the ones in The World Cafe. The World Cafe, the buffet, was delicious. We ate there for breakfast and lunch. The omelettes were full of yummies and the salad bar was extensive and superb. Weird though, the water glasses in the World Cafe were plastic. I didn't care for that. We bought the drink package so we can't speak to the drink prices or complementary wines/beer at lunch or dinner. They gym was clean and well equipped. All the cardio machines were always stocked with water and a towel and the weight area had an ample supply of water and towels. I also joined an add on package for $50 for Pilates, yoga, cardio, guided meditation, etc. It got me out of bed and a nice little workout. I highly recommend it. I discovered that program by reading the Daily Viking. We both had 80 minute massages which are superb. I had a facial, mani and pedi. All were top notch. The ship's astronomer, geologists and historian were all excellent speakers. There is a planetarium above the Explorer's Lounge that the astronomer gave private talks (12 people or so) which was fun. The stairwells also had life-size renditions of the Bayeux Tapestry that the historian gave limited tours/talks about which was a wonderful time. NOTE: You have to go to the talks to find out about these add-ons. The Viking Daily doesn't advertise them. The ports of call were all wonderful. Just note, your activities will be curbed in parts of Chile due to the repeated warnings from excursion guide. And then there was the last day...F- all the way.... We were going to stay on in Chile for a few days, but we cancelled that after the civil unrest really started popping off. Viking offered a package where they'd take us to Santiago, give us a tour of the city, and then take us to a hotel's lounge where there would be a place to rest, eat, etc. to await our late-night airline departures back to the States. The bus ride to Santiago had one bathroom break. Once we made it to Santiago, we went our a several hour tour with NO WATER, NO BATHROOM BREAKS, NO FOOD AND NO WARNING THAT WE'D BE DOING THAT BEFORE THE HOTEL. Consequently, no one was prepared for the tour BEFORE the hotel. We finally revolted and told the tour guide to take us to the hotel. At the hotel it was an utter mess. Mind you we hadn't eaten since 7:30 a.m. or so and it was ow 2:30 p.m. All the "free" food had been eaten up. We ate in the resturant which we had to pay extra for. Then there was no place to sit except on the floor in the courtesy area - unacceptable and we did not sit on the floor. There was no water except for two, one gallon jugs of water that we had to nag them to fill. There was no real clear way to tell what was a clean glass and what wasn't because the hotel didn't pick up the dirty glasses/dishes from "lunch". Just a total, utter, disgusting mess. Save your money. Go to the airport hotel. Check in for a day. Take a nap. And get yourself to the terminal for your late night flight on your own. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and island destinations. This was our first cruise so we only had online research to help us. Once we were onboard and speaking with other guests -most of which were Viking Explorers which means repeat guests- we knew how lucky we were to have chosen this line. No up-sell. No one in your face. Attentive service with amazing food. Every port included a free excursion which helped to educate the guests about the country, local population and tour some of the sights. The cabins all have balconies. Repeat, all. They are lovely with enough room to feel at home. I admit, we had sticker shock when we saw the price compared to the discounted competition that floods the internet and our emails. Again, we learned what the Viking experience provided versus the unexpected pay as you go options. We enjoyed the adults only atmosphere with luxury spa facilities of which a large part were free to use as you wish. Specific treatments etc were pay as you go. The entertainment crew was creative and beyond talented. Something for everyone and at various times to suit personal schedules. We will definitely choose this line and travel method again....they have so many options... Read Less

Our 23rd cruise and first with Viking was most enjoyable , 10 nights around the Eastern Caribbean in and out of San Juan . Having cruised with P & O , Royal Caribbean , Cunard , Norwegian & Oceania before we felt it compared favourably with most of them with Oceania the nearest comparison . Loved the small ship feel , never busy , loads of space , never having to wait for a table and at times it felt like our own luxury ship . Adults only was a plus and sunbeds were always freely available , no having to rush for one on this ship . No casino or towel cards , water freely available , excellent drinks and included excursions were good . We paid extra for 1 excursion in Antigua and throughly enjoyed a catamaran trip with lunch down the west coast . Food was very good ( not quite Oceania standards but still very good ) entertainment was a little lacking but I guess that is because it is a small ship . Pablo the guitar was superb and the Viking band and singers were also very entertaining in my opinion much better than the main 4 singers . Very few complaints from us , the swimming pools are deep throughout so you cannot stand up unless very tall and the main pool area gets very very hot when the roof is closed but small issues . Staff are the happiest we have encountered on any cruise ship and there seems a great connection between them and the officers/senior management . Cabin was very comfortable although a little short on storage , but great bathroom with heated floor , excellent lighting and USB charging points by the bed . The only negative we would say is coming from the UK we had flights via JFK New York and these were very hard work , 2.5 hours getting through immigration going out and delayed flight coming back meaning we had to take a later flight back to the UK which was stressful and hassle . We would love to cruise with Viking again but would only consider the Caribbean again if we can get direct fights . This however did not spoil our cruise which was one of the best relaxing cruises we have been on and it was lovely not to feel herded about . Viking treat you as individuals and also as an adult ! We chose this cruise because it stopped at all the islands we were interested in. My husband will only cruise with Viking, and this cruise did not disappoint us. The crew, all treat you like royalty. Something I have not experienced on other cruise lines. The cabin was kept very clean and supplied with whatever we requested every day. The food, you just can't say enough about the food and the presentation! Exceptional. We took a tour of the galley and that was extremely interesting to see, well worth the time. We like Viking as there are no kids allowed under 18, makes it so much more pleasant for us. The excursions we took were great, some better than others. Embarkation and Disembarkation is a breeze with Viking. So much so, we forgot a bag at the terminal, and the crew were amazing and brought the bag to us at the airport. I can't rave enough about Viking!!! We have 2 more cruises already booked!!! Read Less

51st Wedding Anniversary trip for the most wonderful girl in the world. The Viking Sky is a beautiful vessel. The room stewards were very friendly and efficient, although we did lose our first steward because he was selected for the Round the World cruise and sent home on leave to be with his family before the extended voyage (the best of the best!). ( I showed him his home on Bali using Google Maps satellite imagery and we became friends.) Food service was excellent and we used the World Cafe for most meals- the staff and food selections fit us better then the other venues, and the ice cream and chocolate cookies were beyond description. We particularly enjoyed the Port Call briefings and the art, history lectures. The Met's "Aida" opera was a great delight and a pleasant surprise. Our off-ship tours were excellent, the Rhodes tour guide was especially good. The three Israel tours (Old City & Modern Jerusalem, Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and Nazareth & the Sea of Galilee) brought us both a sense of wonder at the Life of Christ and his time and place. were particularly outstanding. A port change from Ashdod to Haifa resulted in our included tour taking longer than originally planned, but a meal was provided off-ship, proving the logistics staff at Viking was on top of events. Oh yes, seeing Stromboli erupt during the night passage to Naples was a highlight of the voyage. Read Less
