As always, the service staff was exceptional, from our arrival in Barcelona to our departure at Heathrow. The restaurant professionals were courteous, pleasant and friendly, unlike many of the guests. May I suggest hiring some entertainers and staff from the destinations being traveled. That was a feature that made our Russian voyage so richly rewarding. Evidently, the Brits received a much better package at a bargain price. They behaved boorishly and dressed poorly, even in the dining rooms. When commenting on their complementary Silver Package, one couple actually said to me "We don't have to drink that garbage wine." There was little emphasis on Spanish or English foods and beverages and I was unable to schedule even one visit to the Chef's Table or Manfredi's at my preferred times. The included shore excursions seemed short and rushed which was accentuated by the number of sea days. Our visit to Portsmouth resembled a tour that might have been given by a real estate agent. Malaga was beautiful and our guide very pleasant. Our visit to Santiago de Compostela was the exception. Our guide was very articulate and knowledgable, and projected the Viking image very well. I understand that the Iberian Explorer may be an outlier, yet given our recent experience we are less likely to travel with Viking any time soon and not as enthusiastic in our recommendations to others. Please call me If you wish for additional comments. I really enjoy engaging with each of your employees. Best wishes Read Less

Our first cruise and we were not disappointed. We booked a penthouse veranda and the room was quiet, well designed, aesthetically pleasing and importantly with a comfortable well sized bed. The food, ambience staff and overall experience was 5*. Be aware that Viking promote and market heavily in the USA and a small number of American guests were loud and rude, especially in the select restaurants with little consideration for other diners. I really don't want to know about how Trump is doing a great job or hear a group of girls whooping while we're enjoying a quiet meal! However we also met some lovely guests and new friends from America, the UK, Australia and Canada and remain in contact. Disappointing that on the final night the boat is being cleared and cleaned ready for the next guests and you feel like you are in the way. The only other issue to be aware of is that although we had registered our Credit Card a small charge of $2.50 was picked up by the card company as suspicious when Viking tried to charge the account at 1am on the morning before leaving and we were not informed before departing. This resulted in me being held and escorted back to the service desk to resolve with my wife concerned, unaware and waiting on the transfer bus with other guests. This was highly embarrassing and could have been resolved if Viking had left a note in the room before we vacated the room. I informed customer service and although the team verbally apologised we received no written apology and again this is less than satisfactory given the cost of the cruise. No follow up from Viking whatsoever other than marketing emails. Read Less

We are currently on the cultural Cuba cruise, and I would not advise anyone to take any cruise to Cuba unless you can be in Havana for 3 days. The Cienfuegos and Santiago ports are very lame. Havana was fantastic but the drive is over 6 hours on very poor roads. We will try to plan another trip to Havana only in the future. The ship is beautiful, but seems to shake more in the ocean than other cruise ships we have been on. We had a junior suite that was very roomy with great bathrooms. The beds are very hard, but they gave us a topper to make it more comfortable. The internet was very slow and movies kept freezing up at night when more users were on. The premium wine selection was not good but the drink package was worth it for great mixed drinks. A big miss was not showing the college football National Championship game and it could not be watched anywhere on the ship. The food in the 2 specialty restaurants was excellent and the pool side grill had a great hamburger and tuna burger. The other restaurants were just ok. Room service seemed to run behind schedule most days for breakfast, so order at least 30 minutes early. The fitness center is small and we would have liked to see more weight machines but it seemed to work for us. On the plus side, Janice our cabin steward was excellent and we had fantastic bartenders in I Made and Eddie. The spa staff that did the pedicures were fantastic. Read Less

*Cruise chosen primarily for ports I had not been to before...specifically, Naples, Barcelona and Algeria. *Food in main restaurant was very good, including selections. Service was adequate. *Entertainment was up to highschool level...quite disappointing. *Surprised by additional charges for wine in main rooms...should have better perused info *Enjoyed indoor hot baths...very nice and rarely busy. *Shopping mediocre...poor selection. Would have loved to have more items from the geographies' visited. *Service in the bars was very good, attentive and friendly. *Lack of Holiday decorations was disappointing...ship was sterile in appearance (previously enjoyed Crystal cruises...Holiday trimming there was amazing!) *Scandinavian restaurant menu (fixed) was disappointing and we cancelled our second reservation. Believe the party we travelled with also cancelled their reservation...lack of choice primary reason. *When returning from Taste of Sicily shore excursion, all restaurants were closed except Grill...however due to the number of buses returning simultaneously, people were in the cue for 45-50 minutes...seems to me that the timing of this excursion should have been better managed by Viking. We choose this cruise because we loved our Viking river cruise on the Danube the previous year and also because I've always wanted to explore the Amazon river and rain forest since I was young. We have sailed on RCL 4 time and Princess once. This was our fist Viking ocean cruise and more than likely our last. The staff on board was excellent. Every single member of the crew was friendly and helpful. They felt like family to us. The ship was very nicely appointed in Scandinavian design. The Explorers lounge and Mamsens were particularly nice common areas. The spa with the steam and cold rooms we used frequently. Our room was acquitted but could have had more storage space. Dining was hit or miss. We had some excellent meals at the Chefs Table restaurant. We also ate some under done steaks and over done fish at the restaurant and the buffet. The musicians and entertainers we professional. Typical of the entertainment you would find cruise ship. The Brazilian female singer was wonderful. Snorkeling in Saint Thomas and sailing on a catamaran Saint Lucia were wonderful. The shore excursion in Brazil were as good they could be is the best way I can describe it. Our focus was to see as much natural beauty in the Amazon region. The city tours were a bit underwhelming and struck me as typical cities you would find in many developing countries. We could have skipped Belem all together. We never got off the bus probably for good reason. We enjoyed the Pink Dolphin encounter, the survival trek, piranha fishing, and the search for caimans excursions. I wished we saw more wildlife. It's my understanding the best time to see animals in the area are at dawn or after dark. The caimans excursion was at night so we did see what we were looking for. The other excursions were during the day so the animals were not active. Our tour guides did their best to find what they could though which we appreciated. Our biggest complaint about the cruise was the lack on activities. We had 8 days at sea and we were not big on catching up on reading so we really started to go stir crazy. The few activities they did offer like the lectures (which were great!) felt mobbed. If you didn't arrive 30 minutes early to the theater you had trouble finding a seat. The atmosphere generally speaking felt a little sedate on the ship. This is what many people on the ship enjoyed, but it just wasn't for us. I think we need a little more excitement. It seemed like Viking I using the minimalist activity model which works on the river cruises but does not for a ship this size. Our next complaint is that it seemed like we had to wait in long lines more than I would expect. Wait in a line for a table for dinner. Wait in line to get into the Theater. Wait inline to get out of the Theater. Wait in line for the excursions. Wait in line for crab legs! We didn't feel this way on larger ships we've been on. Lastly, We purchased the premium drink package and the ship started running out of our preferred beverages 2 weeks into our 3 week cruise. We talked to others who were having the same issue. Viking should plan better for this or ask us what we like prior to departure. All this being said, we are going on another Viking river Cruise this summer. All the issues I have with Viking Sea seem fixable. I'm hopeful Viking figures it out. Matt Note: we had to conserve water while in the amazon river since the ship could not desalinate fresh water. Not a big deal but something I didn't know prior to the cruise. Read Less

Really wanted to see that part of Germany/Hungary. Enjoyed the ship and cruise however due to the Danube being low we had to change ships 3 times. We were told ahead of time the Danube would be low and we'd have t change ships in ONE time. Viking was very efficient about getting our luggage and moving it to the next port. They certainly had a plan in mind for this type of problem. Unpacking a d packing 3 times was a bit much. The reason my husband and I like to cruise is so we can relax when we get to the next city. We were alway thinking now we have to pack again..or live out of our luggage. If we had it to do over again, I would have postponed the cruise till the river was adequate to cruise without changing ships. Missed a few sights we really wanted to see due to having to be bussed to the next ship. That was very disappointing. Sorry I couldn't have given the cruise part a better grade. Staff was excellent. We spent a few days ahead of this cruise "doing" New York city -- seeing a couple of outstanding plays and touring the 9/11 Memorial. Ironically enough, that time became even more memorable and enjoyable in some ways than the cruise on Viking Star itself. Embarkation was a hassle only because the precise location of the ship was not made known to us, so our Uber driver had to drop us a quarter-of-a-mile away and we had to drag our luggage to the check-in location. I chose this cruise because it would take me back to where I grew up -- spending the first eighteen years of my life on the island of Aruba (part of the then Netherlands Antilles). I also wanted to share more with my wife what it was like to live on one of those islands in the southern Caribbean. As with every cruise that we've made with Viking (and this was our third -- the last through Europe and the Mediterranean on this same ship), our time aboard ship was enjoyable and the ship's staff were extraordinary in their service and care of us. One glaring exception, however, were the ways in which passengers, themselves, laid practically permanent claim to lounges around the pool area -- even when they were not there -- by leaving pieces of their clothing or miscellaneous properties on or around the lounges. They effectively made whole areas around the pool extensions of their staterooms which the rest of us, then, could not use. The food aboard was delicious and the serving impeccable. For those two reasons, alone, I'd sail with Viking again. I've rate our overall experience of this cruise as "Average," then solely because of the very poor port excursions that Viking chose for us. Except for our time on Aruba (where I rented a car and drove us around on our own because I grew up on that island), all of the other excursions/tours were of poor quality and largely a waste of time and money. For this reason alone, I doubt that I'll ever take a Viking Cruise to the Caribbean again. Read Less

All the hype couldn’t wait to cruise this line. The ship was beautiful, the staff and service was wonderful. Embarkment was ok except when came on had to leave luggage in lounge and claim later did own transfers. The cabin was Good but I have had nicer on other ships. PV1...Dining was also good not spectacular. The open table with wine pairings was the best. Manfredos was nothing special. We did not do any entertainment outside of hearing music here and there and high tea which was nice. Our excursions were early and the talks seemed to be during dinner. It was nice that it was a small ship and no children. The silver drink package was well worth the money as the pours are much better then the included drinks. That being said we did optional excursions which for the most part were good, but we got abandoned on one and spent a lot of time with guest services and excursions trying to remedy the situation. We imagine older guests should beware. The reluctance of the line to remedy the situation for a small amount of money when the tour did not follow Viking standards was disappointing. Small things like not having an ATM on board was a big inconvenience in Europe. Overall we had a nice cruise but we are not in any hurry to board Viking unless the itinerary warrants. Read Less

We had cruised with Carnival and Princess before and this year went upscale to a Viking Med. Ocean Cruise with our brother and wife as travel partners. The positives: 1) Food was excellent, 2) Less crowds with smaller passenger loads. The negatives: 1) Simple requests required escalation to management. We had a plumbing problem with the shower, special requests for honor bar drinks, that took several calls, finally to the customer service manager to resolve. 3) Our deck four laundry was broken more than it was working and the response to get it fixed was poor. 4) Some shore excursions, especially the one to Pisa was poorly managed for toilet breaks...in this case no breaks until the end of the bus ride and tour during our short free time. 5) The Spa was hard to get appointments for a simple pedicure (again requiring elevation to mgt) and this costly pedicure's quality was sub par for the $69 price tag. 6) The ship cancelled one of two days in Barcelona (a big disappointment) and getting reservations at times desired for fine dining and shore excursions was onerous, even though we reserved early. 7) Lastly, Viking seeks manual input surveys for feedback but in a short cruise with no sea days there was virtually no way to get these forms back in...they truly need an online survey system and allow customers up to a month to provide input...subsequently they probably do not get an adequate sample size. In summary, Viking costs quite a bit more than the traditional big carriers and for that cost we had many reasonable expectations that were not met.... while we enjoyed this cruise could and should have been better managed. Perhaps they are still in a learning curve with ocean cruises, an off shoot of their river cruises that they are known for. Read Less

This cruise had a lot of ports that were on our bucket list. We enjoyed the three over night port stops. Our room was nice and kept very tidy by our room steward Anton and his team. It could use some more storage for clothes such as shelves or a few more drawers. (That’s my only complaint). The ship is beautiful. The spa with the thermal suite and snow grotto is so cool. We went as often as we could. Nice gym that we used only a few times unfortunately. The 2nd deck is great for walking laps. The food was excellent as well as the service. We ate at the Chef’s table twice and Manfredo’s twice. Both very good. I really enjoyed the outside seating at breakfast and for lunch. The pool grill was very good for burgers and sandwiches. The included beer and wine with meals was an added bonus and plentiful. The included excursions are ok. I prefer private tours with smaller group. Some where better than others. We hired private guide in ast Petersburg. TJ Travel was excellent. We also had a private guide in Berlin who was also very good. We loved our cruise so much we booked a river cruise while on board. Viking has excellent customer service. Read Less

viking is a great cruise line and i have been on it before. however, after completing a cruise on viking sky a few weeks ago i would really hesitate to choose it again. from the moment i got on the ship i had trouble breathing. the hallway outside our stateroom was freezing all the time and after a few days i had a full blown asthma attack. have never had one before..............my asthma is very well controlled but there is something that they are putting in the air on this ship that irritates your nose, your throat and your lungs. we started out with having our room only cleaned with hot water.....no detergents. didn't work. went to the doctor every single day for two weeks to have an inhaler put on me which helped for a few hours. with every stop.....................i could breathe again on land but as soon as i got back on the ship,i would start having problems again. even a specialist i saw in madeira confirmed there was something toxic in the air on board that was causing the problem. i talked to at least ten people who were experiencing allergy problems on board. i don't know if anyone else had it as severely as i did but they all complained of running noses, coughs etc. in their attempt to kill off every single germ on the ship, viking is putting something in the air conditioning system that is irritating to the lungs. i hope they look after this. Entertainment I am afraid is pretty amateurish. The kids try hard but whoever looks after this part bof the on board program needs to get out of the "tribute to the Beatles " era. Nothing new..nothing even remotely interesting. Food is good.. especially in alternate restaurants. Staff were helpful and I liked the casual atmosphere. Read Less

We chose the Miami pre-cruise extension and were disappointed. I am accustomed to having Viking provide sightseeing each day. There was nothing scheduled for our arrival day, so we arranged our own tour. Our room was not ready, so we were told to return after 4. We returned after our tour, around 6, and our room and similar ones had been given away!! We spend an interminable time at reception trying to find a place to bed down for the night. The hotel eventually upgraded us and gave us a $50 chit for dinner, but that didn't quite make up for the hassle we had endured. The wine and cheese party the next night (a disappointment after the usual Viking river welcome dinners) was held in room off the lobby that was open to the sky. It was a virtual wind tunnel. We were the first to take our inferior snacks and glass of wine out to the lobby, and were soon joined by most of the group. What a poor choice of a room...and of the nibbles. The Hilton Cabana Hotel was not the best. Only one elevator worked, so it was a disaster on the day of our departure for the ship as people tried to bring themselves or their luggage down to the lobby. Our luggage was never picked up, so Bob had to bring it down himself. The embarcation process was the smoothest I have ever experienced. (The same was true of disembarkation) Everyone was ready for us, passports were scanned, ship key cards issued and we were ushered onto the ship and greeted with a glass of bubbly...always a nice treat. We chose this to visit Key West, the Panama Canal and Cartagena, all of which we enjoyed, plus we wanted to experience a Viking Ocean ship since we've been on several Viking river cruises. The ports, other than the ones mentioned above, were not very interesting and the tours were dip. I was disappointed and I was also disappointed in the number of sea days, tho I knew how many there would be when I signed up. I never dreamed that I would finish three books of over four hundred pages while on a sightseeing cruise. The meals in the main dining room were the expected high caliber of Viking. The selections were so wonderful that we always had trouble deciding on what to have. We always selected different courses so we could sample each others choices. The idea behind the Captain's Table was clever- small bites of special sumptuous food- but we found the main dining room preferable to the Italian restaurant. The buffet lunch was always tasty, so was breakfast there, tho my husband preferred to have breakfast in the main dining room...so we alternated. I did have a problem with the tossed salad at lunch on the buffet. On your riverboats it is so easy to fix up a big plate of salad by yourself. On the Sky, the toppings/additions were out of reach so we had to stand in line and wait for the chef to serve us...time wasted and no one likes to stand in line for food. We are smokers and appreciated the fact that our area was covered and so protected from sun and rain, however the tall cigatette disposal towers were never emptied. There wasn't much to the gift shop, but it was certainly better than on your river boats. I have already complained about the rotating globe that we purchased in the shop and you can check your records for that. I think the shops on the Regent ships are more interesting...especially when there are so many sea days. Naturally, despite what I have written, we will try another Viking Ocean cruise...I am thinking of Bergan to Greenwich. Read Less

We went on this cruise to see Montreal and Quebec. The included tours of Quebec, Gaspe and Boston were very, very disappointing. We will not be taking any further Viking cruises in North America. If we decide to go on a Mississippi cruise, we will use the American Cruise line. The girl who handled our embarkation was the least friendly of the entire staff. The food was good but there were too many items on the menu that I could not eat. The entertainment was very good. It was nice that they had the port talks and other talks on the TV. The service both in our cabin and in the restaurants was excellent. The staff was very well trained. Because we did not get to see too much of Quebec, we are going back there this summer. We did not take any children on this cruise and it really wasn't designed for children. Disney is the only cruise line suited for children. Read Less

Friends and acquaintances said Viking River cruises were wonderful; from morning till night Viking took care to make their stay on their ship to the excursions the best! We unfortunately assumed the Ocean cruise would be the same. The ship is beautiful, however the excursions were minimal. Realizing we were on a limited timeframe; one port per day, we choose to take advantage of using the excursions included in the cruise, thinking they would be like your river cruise excursions. We found these excursions were short and did not give much insight into the ports due to the timeframe of each excursion. With the cost of the cruise, we were hoping for much more. After the excursion, the majority of the day we spent guessing where things were and what to do. Because we chose to use the excursions included in our package, we could not get other Viking excursions because the additional excursions always conflicted (time-wise) with the included excursions. If you're looking for a relaxing ocean cruise on a beautiful ship, choose Viking. If you're looking for an informative tour type ocean cruise, I would not recommend Viking. Realizing this was only the the Viking Sky's second cruise, I'm hoping they get better at excursions or change their campaign to reflect their wonderful ship and not so much the port excursions. This was my 8 or so times cruising, with past 2 cruises on Oceania (Riveria) and latest, Regent (Mariner). This latest cruise was chosen with the following requirements: 1. Did not want to cruise on a cruise brand lower than premium status. 2. Did not want to go on a boat with guest of more than 1200 or so guest. 3. Had to be a Mediterranean Cruise and Port of Call was important as I have been on 4 Mediterranean Cruises and did not want to go to the same ports. 4. Dining an important area as both Oceania and Regent did a great job and we like to eat well. 5. Had to be in January as wife wanted to go on babymoon. Viking "Secret of the Mediterranean " fit this perfectly....especially with the deal I received (1799 USD per person for a Deluxe Veranda). I purchased this quickly especially after reading the great feedback (92%) compared to 60% something of Regent. This included "free " shore excursion and free beer/wine for lunch and dinner. There is a Silver Package Drink upgrade for 139 USD and included drinks up to 15 USD (except champagne) which I purchased. Embarkation at Rome was ok, but be aware that you should hail a cab with a permit to enter the port or else you will have to wait at the Port Transfer Station, which buses passengers to the cruise ship....we waited 30 minutes at the station before being transported to our boat and it was freezing weather. We got on the boat within minutes of checking in. The ship itself was one of the beautifully designed boat (interior and exterior) i have cruised on. Scandinavian interior was just a treat to be in. The ship was literally brand new. Stateroom was about the size of Veranda Room on the Oceania Riveria. The design of the room....to be honest....very IKEA, functional and minimal. Heated bathroom floors was a nice touch. Restaurant Service was -B. The effort of the restaurant staff (especially Indonesian and Filipinos) was great but the overall service of the restaurant staff was not as polished as the other cruises I have been. Wrong orders here and there...forgotten orders and so on. House Keeping was spot on and were great Room Service was relatively fast was average food Bartender in Torshavn was Top Notch Gym was surprising big Thermal Spa with Sauna and Cold Dip was great (free) The remaining Service Team (mostly Europeans) such as Guest Services/Excursion and Front Desk were effective but not as friendly as the other staff. Everything else was below standard. Food - Too salty, no imagination, no variety (often repeated) and wrongly cooked....just not very good. Food in Regent and Oceania were far far more superior in terms of taste, variety and ingredients. Port........Malta, Tunisia, Calgari, Algiers, Valencia. These were truly exotic and for me, the deal breaker to go on this cruise. We missed Valencia entirely due to bad weather. We stayed in Tunisia and Calgari for only 4 to 5 hours...way too short. Algiers was just a waste of time as we had to stay with the Cruise excursions only. Excursions - we did the free included excursions and i personally thought they were all crap and way to short....average of 3 hours long....Algiers was 2 hours. We decided to take a taxi while we were in Tunisia and that was worthwhile and around 40 Euros. If Viking thinks "included" excursions will be a unique selling point....they should consult Regent. Entertainment was so so. No big production, just mainly LED screens. The band in Torshavn was good. Though at first i was ok with no casino....in retrospect, a casino would have made life on board a little more bearable. Overall, it was a good cruise and given the price I paid....not a terrible result. But i am still confused about the outrageously high reviews on Cruise Critic and though Oceania and Regent were a bit more expensive, my next cruise would not be with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise to see some parts of the world we never visited. We were particularly looking for ward to visiting Tunisia and Algeria. What we were not told is that we could not leave the ship unaccompanied in either port. On tour, we were heavily guarded by police with rifles. A bit unsettling to say the least. The tour buses in these are not close to Western standards. In fact, our bus broke down in Tunisia, which cut our touring time considerably. Viking did provide a partial refund, but hey, we traveled this far to see the sights!! Algeria is essentially a military state and we witnessed an encounter between our tour guide and a self important military lackey at a visitor site. It was embarrassing for our guide and telling to us as visitors. The food on this ship was very good. We were able to book a couple of nights in Manfredi's and one at the Chef Table. Skip the Chef Table. My wife has a food allergy to shellfish. Despite making this known to the restaurant manager, three of the four courses served at the Chef's Table had shellfish!! It would have been easy to inform us of this issue ahead of time. Didn't happen. The chef even tried to convince her that oyster sauce has no real oyster in it. We were not taking the chance. We had ship board credit which we used for the Tunis trip. As earlier mentioned, we we refunded a part of the Tunis trip, but there was no time to use the credit as we were unable to get into port in Valencia due to 50 MPH winds and 20 foot seas. Viking refused to reimburse this credit. Our stateroom was low and central in the ship. This was a good choice because the seas were rough and many folks were getting seasick. Our steward was OK, but not great. One day we came in and found another passengers key card in our slot. We got a convoluted explanation as to how this happened. The on board entertainment was not bad. The performers were energetic and gave it their best. The internet was surprisingly good. The biggest complaint was the confusion on our final day. We were to disembark at about 9AM. However, due to the aforementioned high seas, we could not dock on time. We were told the best case was we would be docking later that night and spending another night on board. You can imagine the chaos that ensued with people worried about flights home and post cruise plans in Barcelona. We canceled our hotel in Barcelona. Low and behold, about 5PM we are docking in Barcelona, unannounced!! We were able to get our reservation reinstated and we got off the ship and jumped in a taxi. We missed a tour we had set up for earlier that day. After spending two nights in Barcelona, we headed to the airport for our flight home. We ran into a couple we had dined with. They were originally scheduled to leave on Sunday, but Viking was unable to get them on a flight until Tuesday. What a shame. Their vacation was ruined, our troubles paled in comparison. If you are going to this part of the world,do not assume the Med is not rough!! And don't have high expectations for Tunis and Algiers. Read Less
