WE are a retired couple that loves to travel. When we were offered a chance to visit the Amazon with Viking, we immediately booked our cruise. This was our first cruise on a Viking ocean going vessel. Having been on three river cruises, we expected the best, but were surprised to find it even surpassed our expectations! I can tell you now, that we can't wait to book another ocean cruise with Viking. We have been on many other ocean going cruises with a variety of companies... but this was the BEST! The entire crew from room attendants up to officers ingratiated themselves being so helpful, happy, while also very professional. The numerous restaurants had not only quality food, but choices beyond our belief!! Even with a 22 day sail, we could not experience all they offered. We enjoyed the he excellent guest lecturers- all had very interesting programs. Entertainment aboard was varied and very much appreciated. There was always a variety of choices, and all very professional. Read Less

We’ve been on two previous Viking River cruises and this was the first Viking Ocean cruise – we have trusted and been happy with all aspects of Viking – we wanted to cruise the Baltics and our favorite stops were Tallin, Estonia – Gdansk, Poland – Aalborg, Denmark and all of Norway - all ports were easy to navigate on to shore (no tethering) most by bus but several were walk right off into the community like Aalborg, Denmark and Eidfjorde, Norway - after several free excursions by bus and the general 2-3 hour tour we started to appreciate some of the paid excursions that had around 20-30 people - more personable and enjoyable - we weren’t impressed with larger cities like St. Petersburg as tours to landmarks and museums were rushed and crowded - we are on vacation and do enjoy relaxation and that's what the ship offers in all areas - it's OK to skip a port and just relax on board as there is so much to do - the spa and fitness area offered programs and the top deck had the best fitness equipment and activities like shuffleboard - movie theatres provided themed movies in connection to the areas we cruised - on board musical entertainment was fun and vibrant from lounge shows to pool parties and the dining offerings ranged from great lasgna and an Italian menu at Manfredi’s to a wonderful wine and food pairing at the Chef’s Table – the Restaurant offered a wide range of choices from fish to steak and local favorites – the World Café offered a smorgasbord of main entrees – desserts and snacks – Mamsen’s served a wonderful daily breakfast with fresh pastries and fruit plus waffles and breakfast platters made to order - the lounge choices were fun – warm and friendly – relaxing views of the sea and countryside from the Explorer’s Lounge listening to a guitarist or pianist - to night time entertainment at Torshavn with shows like The Rat Pack – the Viking Bar and Living Room was a great place to hear music from highly skilled musicians and entertainers – we will be cruising another itinerary with Viking Ocean in the future and we highly recommend connecting with Cruise Critic through their Meet & Mingle on board – we have many friends just from that connection – we like the smaller ship with 930 cruisers and no casinos or themed gimmicks – this allowed us to meet so many great people - fun ship and wonderful staff !!! The Viking ship is gorgeous with a very modern, sleek design. Outstanding that Viking makes the SPA area available to everyone which includes their sauna, steam room, SNOW room, therapy pool, etc. You only pay for personal services, such as massages. This is so much better than most cruise lines that require you to pay a Spa fee just to use their spa area. The general Restaurant was very good. We prefer to eat "when you want" approach and we never really had to wait more than a few minutes. We had a choice of eating at a table for two or with a group which was nice. Excellent menus. Really liked their specialty restaurant, called Manifredi's. Their other specialty restaurant, The Chef's Table, was a bit too "fancy" for our tastes and you did not have a choice of menu. Good experience though to eat foods we have not tried before. We like the Viking approach of including excursions for each port as part of the basic cruise fee, but then also providing optional excursions that you pay extra for. We went on an excursion at every port, although this itinerary could have used a "Sea Day" for people to catch their breath. Several guests commented that this was the most port intensive itinerary they have been on which is great if you like lots of walking and activity. Some of the excursions involved much more walking that their description implied which was a problem for me who walks with a cane. Their excursion descriptions need to be more specific in terms of walking requirements. Most of the excursions we chose to pay extra for were great, but I would not recommend the boat option to see caves near Corfu - not worth the money. Crew and staff were excellent and always very helpful. Yes, we will travel with Viking on an ocean or river cruise again. Read Less

Imagine coming in very late at night the first night and finding your luggage in your room in minutes, 2 lovely trays of food and a bottle of wine waiting. Embarkation and disembarkation was a breeze - they've done this before. It took no time to aclimate ourselves to the lay of the ship and the elevators never had a wait time. Since I first saw HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, the movie as a child ,I always wanted to see Copenhagen. Yet it was the fabulous ports of Stavanger, Alborg and Bergen Norway, Gdansk Poland, Estonia, Roostock Germany that absolutely made our trip. The food is fabulous, the staff is exemplary, The World Buffet has everything the Restaurant (dining room serves). We wore our selves out touring in the morning and loved our beautiful cabin, balcony, large screen tv with tons of movies and even Downton Abbey, what a way to relax. The Infinity pool is not to be believed, the attention to detail of glassware, china etc add to the fine dining. It's a pleasure to go to the "fancy" dining venues and not pay extra. And we only had 1 day at sea. But what a lovely day for TEA! The tour directors are knowledgeable friendly and eager to please. Love the casual dress - leave the sport coat home and relax. It's the best cruise out there. Looking forward to another cruise maybe more of Norway it was our favorite. Read Less

I chose the cruise because of ancestors' homelands were around the Baltic & Norway and Viking had an excellent reputation. I never dreamed the experience would be so beautiful. The Ship's decor was wonderfully thought out with Viking and nautical themes. The spaces were so designed that there were many cozy areas to relax, read, visit with others. The Crew, no matter how busy they were, never failed to smile and greet you as you went by. The Tour choices were numerous and well planned with very knowledgeable guides. You could do as much or little to none of them of course. Our Room was spacious enough for the two of us even though adjusted for 2 twin beds. We even took pictures of the bathroom because we were so impressed by the Euro features. I've been in hospitals and rehab facilities that weren't as immaculate as the Viking ship. The excitement has not worn off after a month being home. I'm encouraging everyone I know to go with Viking. Read Less

This was my third Viking Cruise. I love the ship, ports, friendly staff, excellent cuisine. I could go on and on. I just keep coming back for more. Embarkation was well organized and efficient. Love Port Talks. Attend as many as possible. Those not attended were watched on the video feed. The ship was beautiful. It was well maintained and staff were always cleaning, painting scuffed areas. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. Any request was granted. The wines that were paired with the meals were excellent. Let me say that the Gelato was a big seller, always lines at that counter. Food was outstanding and they always offered something new and interesting. Enjoyed the Italian theme one night, the fresh fish fry, all just wonderful. The cruise director was also a gem. She had a beautiful voice and joined in the entertainment. We will keep coming back to Viking for more cruises. Read Less

Arrived in Athens 2days before departure and boarded the cruise ship with ease. Everything went very smooth and they had all the shore excursions well organized. Vey impressed. Only thing wrong was the transfers when we got to Venice (not good) but this was not done by Viking should have booked Viking transfers. All in all in was fantastic and will definitely go on another one. This was our second with Viking ,first ocean and the river cruise was aslo as great. We went from Budapest to Amsterdam and all the shore excursions were also great. Meals were fantastic and the alacart restaurants were nice to go to. The staff couldn't do enough for you always asking if everything is okay. Our cabin was very spacious and we enjoyed our terrace. It is also nice that you may bring the local wine on board to try or the local beers. Excellent holiday and will do it again. Read Less

We had already enjoyed several VIking RIver cruises and we were curious to see a part of the world where we had never been before. Seeing Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, Slovenia etc were unique and full of history and some amazing towns and countryside. The Viking Sea (VS) was an amazing experience in itself. While it carries over 900 people, it felt less crowded and more personal than even the new Viking Longships. The VS has so many special places designed for getting away and just enjoying /relaxing. The choices for eating fit every possible preference from casual to formal and there were limitless varieties of food to choose from. Both the quality of the food and the staff that served it could not have been better. Two of the perks that the ocean ships have over the river ships, is a laundry and a medical clinic. Both great additions to the sailing experience. I was a bit concerned about sailing in the ocean as opposed to a river, but the VS was so smooth, that even with white caps on the water nor at night did we feel anything. Our one major suggestion to VIking would be that more detailed information was provided concerning the optional tours. Even just providing the time spent driving to the destinations would be very helpful. Read Less

THIS cruise FAR exceeded our Expectations is every way. THAT is the highest of praise from people who have travelled widely over 50 years. VIKING is the BEST. Loved the trip, staff, cruise area but really LOVED the spa, spacious cabins and the entire lovely lovely ship! The ship is spacious with SO many little private alcoves and lounges to sit and read; high tea was informal and lovely. The Spa is gorgeous, no charge, and immaculate. The Ice Grotta was fun; the sauna and steam room so very nice and clean. The attendant in the spa was very attentive and was constantly asking us if we needed towels, a drink of water or anything at all that he could assist us with. In addition, the evening entertainment was so very nice: tasteful, relaxing and just right for the end of day soaking up the bright sunlight at midnight and seeing a new day in against the background of some of the most fantatic scenery in the world. We want to go again...and so do our friends who travelled with us. Here's hoping we can do it all over again! Read Less

This cruise went to the Scandinavian countries and other ports of call I wanted to see. I was interested in a cruise and liked that this was a smaller ship with fewer people. Viking offered great prices at the time so chose them. I had heard great things about Viking form others that had used their river cruises. One of the best things I ever did. The ship was wonderful - the rooms had verandas for viewing, they were so clean and well equipped. The staff was great - very attentive to detail, so helpful and friendly. The food was well prepared and presented at all the different restaurants. You had such a nice variety of eating arrangements available. The excursions were very well planned and organized. They provided a variety of options for choices. They also held informative seminars aboard the ship regarding different destinations. Getting to the ship and dissembarking were very well organized and comforting when you had long trips. This was our first cruise and I would do it again with Viking. Read Less

This was our first Viking Ocean Cruise, but it will not be our last. The ship was new and very luxurious. All the small details of construction were first class from the a/c supply to the beautiful dining rooms. All cabins had an exterior balcony that allowed you privacy and a beautiful view of all cities and the fjords. You never to felt crowded or pressured to buy drinks like on many cruises, but the friendly staff was always available. Everything was well organized and run very efficiently. The food and wine selections were incredible. The open seating at meals was great and allowed us to visit with people from all over the world. The Viking singers, dancers, and musicians were first class and really enjoyed their jobs. All performances were top notch and all entertainers were so helpful and easy to visit with after their performances. The entire two week cruise was like staying and eating in a five star resort. I do not think anything could have been any better. Read Less

We had never been to Scandinavia and thought this cruise would let us see a lot of it efficiently. We really signed up primarily for the shore excursions, but were pleasantly surprised how nice the ship and the crew were. (It was our first cruise) Even though the ship was fully booked we never had a sense of overcrowding...all the facilities were always available and many times we had them almost to ourselves. The ship itself was beautiful, the dining facilities were amazing, and our cabin was so spacious, more like a hotel room than a cabin. The World Cafe had excellent buffets for breakfast and lunch, and we never had to wait for a table to become available. The Restaurant had a wonderful menu and service was excellent. And the two specialty restaurants were truly experiences, and we were able to secure extra nights in them once we were on board. Read Less

The ship was beautiful. The staff and crew were very helpful and friendly. The variety of food served at all of the dining venues was delicious. Each deck had a free laundromat. The port talks and enrichment lectures were very informative. It was easy rearranging booked tours or booking additional tours. All the tours had expert guides, were very well organized, interesting and worthwhile. As Viking’s tours for St. Petersburg were full, we booked the two-day deluxe St. Petersburg tour and the evening ballet with SPB Tours. This was a suburb tour and included more sights than the Viking tour and was less expensive. Sunrise was at 4:00 a.m. and sunset about 10:00 p.m. The weather was cool—ranging from the 40s to the 60s. The only day of rain was in Stockholm. We tipped local tour guides in Euros. The Baltic was very calm; only twice, did we feel unusual motion. Read Less

We choose this trip because of all the places we would visit. This was the most amazing trip. The staff was beyond friendly and helpful in every way. We went on some included excursions and some optional ones. By far. Waking up before 5:00 am and traveling through the fyords going into Flam Norway was the ultimate experience. We took the full day rail excursion up into the mountains was the highlight of our trip. We booked a private tour in St petersbutg withAlla Tours and between Viking and Alla it could not have been easier. We enjoyed every city, best of all Estonia and Gdansk. Every city was so different and so much to see. Wod love to go backto every one. The tood was exellent in every venue. We especially loved Manfreds, we ate there 3 times during our trip. They tried to get us to book at The Chef's Table, just was not interested. This was our 2nd trip with Viking and we cannot wait to go on another. Read Less

We had done a river cruise with Viking and we were anxious to try their Ocean Cruise once it launched My husband and I travelled alone. We had planned to go with dear friends, but lost one before the voyage and decided to go ourselves to honor her wishes. The cabin was pleasant and spacious. We loved our verandah. The dining choices were great and we especially enjoyed the Chefs Table. The destination choices were great and we saw so many wonderful countries, cities and towns while not needed to pack and unpack. We kept very busy with the choice of shore excursions and shipboard activities...most very well done. In fact, we probably could have used an extra day at sea to just relax - a fact that surprised us. The highlight tours was definitely Pompeii and St. Paul.de Vence, but all but one were terrific. We did buy several of the additionally offered shore excursions. We have already booked another cruise for the Baltic in 2017 Read Less

My wife and I had done Viking's "Romantic Danube River Cruise" from Budapest to Nuremberg in November, 2011, and the "Rhine River Getaway Cruise" from Basel to Amsterdam in November 2012. We thoroughly enjoyed both cruises- the sights, the shore options, the great food, and outstanding professionalism of the crew. We were treated as if we were royalty! The weather that time of year, though, left a little to be desired. So we thought we'd like to do the same thing, but at a different time of year. Viking's "Grand European Tour" gave us that opportunity. We sailed from Amsterdam up the Rhine River, then across the Main River/Canal in Germany (a new experience), and then down the Danube to Budapest. While many of the sights we saw were the same, there were some new ones. Besides, spending two nights in Vienna can never get too old, or seeing the magnificence of the Melk Abbey was worth it. And we got to experience the Middle Rhine and Wachau Valley part of the river cruise in sunshine instead of clouds and fog. I know Viking can't do anything about the weather, but cruising in the spring proved to be worth it. We had a great time experiencing the trip with our brother-in-law and his wife, but made many new friends (an easy thing to do on any cruise). We really like the 14 day length of the trip; it didn't feel like we had just boarded the ship and had to pack up to leave. A great itinerary! We'd highly recommend this tour and any of the Viking cruises- we've also done the Seine River Cruise from Paris to Rouen/Normandy and back, and the Viking Homelands Ocean Cruise from Stockholm to Bergin. We've been so satisfied with Viking, that we're signed up to take the "Elegant Elbe" River Cruise from Prague to Berlin next spring. Our fifth Viking cruise. And I'm sure there will be many more. Enjoy! Read Less

We chose this cruise (technically, two cruises back-to-back) to visit a number of places in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially Barcelona, Nice, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Malta and Tunisia. Unfortunately, political conditions arose that forced Tunisia off the itinerary; however, Crete was added and that was certainly satisfactory. We also chose this cruise because it included both Christmas and New Year's Eve. The tours were excellent and we chose to go on as many as we could. I would note that we have gone on five Viking cruises and have found the tours offered to be uniformly outstanding - especially with the great guides. We did arrive in Barcelona a day early and toured on our own before joining the group on board. From La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to Monaco, Nice, Aix de Provence Rome, Crete and Malta, we saw all of the main the sights with thorough trips, yet adequate "fun stops" at restaurants and markets. Two of the highlights were a private after-hours tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel and a wonderful concert in a cathedral in Malta. We were told that the Vatican Museum tour was limited to eight people (plus guides) and we were very skeptical - thinking it would be "groups of eight" from a number of cruise vessels or other tours. NOPE! It really was just the eight of us, two guides, Vatican security and the cleaning crew through the whole Museum and the Sistine Chapel. One tour was a visit to the salt processing (sal de mer) location in Sicily, together with a tour of a family-owned (multiple generations) olive farm and processing plant. The tour ended with a delightful sampling of olive oils, then moving into bruschetta, pate, pesto, cheese and wine in abundance. Two of the staff also provided traditional Sicilian music with a guitar and accordion and there was some dancing involved by those of us on the tour and various staff and family members. The on board accommodations were up to the usual excellent Viking standards. We went to two of the "specialty restaurants" (including one "Chef's Table" seating) and they were both very nice; but, as always, we most enjoyed the large multi-station buffet. We tend to choose the quieter bars and those were good. We went to several on-board lectures and a couple of shows. Again, these were fun, informative and entertaining. Read Less

We stayed in London as part of our pre-cruise package. Viking reps were consistently present and were available for all our queries. We have taken five ocean cruises before this cruise. the Viking Star is a beautiful well deigned ship with classy decor. Food and staff were exceptional always attending to our 'needs' and continual questions....very very gracious. cabin 3077 was immaculate. Cabin stewards were excellent. Numerous activities on going. Service was first class. Dining was super delicious. Yum yum. Staff, again, excellent. The port and shore excursions were all excellent. We took most of Viking's complimentary excursions. We enjoyed each and every shore excursions. Every tour guide was well versed in the purpose of the tour. Where would you see little ducks climbing little stairs from the harbor onto the pier and escorted across to the park? Stavanger, Norway!! Entertainment was always good. All performers were excellent. Disembarkment went smoothly. All 'hiccups' were handled professionally by Viking personnel. We had a wonderful time. Thank you very much. Read Less

As always, Viking's focus was on destinations and enrichment. The ship is pristine, superbly designed, relaxing and entertaining. We enjoyed all the included excursions. I'll note that the quality of the guides was not up to the normal Viking bar - with some notable exceptions. However, I'm sure Viking will sort that out in short order. The food was plentiful and easily accessible. And what a pleasure it is to sail without the constant pestering to spend money on ship. There are so many quiet places on board where the traveler can go and recharge, read, have conversations with other guests. The crew, as is always true with Viking, is superb - friendly, cheerful, accommodating. We couldn't ask for more. And the destinations are topnotch. Gdansk was the only destination that wasn't fulfilling. I hasten to add: I'm still happy Gdansk is included because of its historical significance. I enjoyed seeing the city. It simply didn't impress. Read Less
