We had done two Viking River cruises and wanted to try the Ocean cruises. We were not disappointed and have no desire to go back to the usual big cruise lines with too many people and not enough personal interaction with a great crew. They knew us by name and were always friendly and helpful. They were always anxious to please, never in a hurry to move on without being helpful and polite. Since we had visited some of the ports on other cruises, we were perfectly content to stay on board, enjoy the solarium and read our books. We have been on another one since in January and have one booked in October. Great cruise line and amazing crew ,the best!! Love the loungers by the pool looking out the glass windows, the excellent food, especially in Manfredi and hot dogs and hamburgers by the pool. I couldn’t believe it the first time I went into the ladies room and heard birds and then ocean waves. Such a simple thing to do to add to the wonderful cruise. Really fast and easy embarkation and debarkation. Can’t wait for the next one! Read Less

Honestly, we loved the Viking River cruises so much that we wanted to try the new Ocean Cruises. We were hoping they would transfer everything we loved about the river cruises, and they did, plus some. I was tiring of taking out a bank loan to have a bottle of wine with dinner on the mass market mega ships. Viking offers paired wines with lunch and dinner and beer, too, at no additional charge. Soft drinks, juices, water, coffee and air (joking about the big ships nickel and diming you to death) are also included. We were we're fortunate enough to be able to dine in Manfredi'is multiple times. I'd love to eat there every evening but, so would many others. We dined in the Chefs Table twice. That was not my cup of tea. I'm not into foam appetizers and fancy plates of food. The wine pairings in the Chefs Table were very interesting and even if the food was not appealing, the wines were fun. Speaking of food and drink, if you'd like to have drinks throughout the day and evening, Vikings Silver Spirit package is only $19.99 A day. This is a real deal compared to the rest of the cruise lines. Most others are getting in excess of $60 a day with a 15% gratuity added on. We only ate in the main dining room twice. The food and service were good. We only went to one event in the theater. For those that are always cold, they had "throws" on the back of some of the seats. I don't recall going on any tours but, that's not unusual for us. We've been to the Caribbean so many times, we usually prefer the pool and a good book on port days. Speaking of the pool, lunch is available from around 11:30 and throughout the afternoon. Great burgers and foot long hotdogs and all the fixings. They also had other items including a Philly cheese steak, wings, grilled tuna and bbq. Of course beer and wine are included with lunch. The design of the ship was very inviting in every area. Great places for drinks, reading and just relaxing. On this particular cruise we had a PV (Penthouse Veranda). The room was spacious and had more storage than we could use. A walk in shower, heated floor. All rooms are balcony staterooms. The PV includes a mini bar that is restocked daily with soft drinks, beer, liquor mixers and snacks. If you are in a Veranda or Deluxe Veranda there is no liquor in the mini bar. We enjoyed the Viking Sky so much that we booked the Viking Sea for January of 2018. It was just as fabulous as the Sky. We've also booked the Viking Sea for N.Y. to San Juan in October of 2018. The staff were wonderful. By the second day, they knew you by name, by cabin preferences, by drink preference. They made it easy to sit back, relax and enjoy. Oh yeah....something very important to us: no kids allowed. Read Less

Fantastic ship with great food, great service, and many excursions which were very good. Cabin on Veranda Penthouse had great space and the room service was wonderfull as we had breakfast in the room many mornings. Looking forward to booking another cruise as soon as possible, and definitely will book on viking sky...Spa was great and usually not crowded. The entertainment each evening provided some very talented singers and dancers and made the evening, whether before or after dinner and enjoyable experience. Attending some special events such as the Scotch tasteing was very much appreciated by my spouse, as well as other special activities on the ship. Having traveled on many other cruises, it was great to see a well organized embarkation for the tours each day we had one scheduled. No long lines or waiting to get on or off, but timing was done so there was no waiting or rushing. Read Less

Have had outstanding experience with 6 prior river cruises in Europe and wanted to experience a vessel of under 1,000 for the first time. If you expand beyond Mexico and Key West would be very interested in going on future cruises say along the East Coast up to and including locations such as New York City, Baltimore, Boston, Cities along the coast of Canada and possibly going up the rivers in the East to possibly Qubec. Will be going on another Cruise in Europe in late March from Paris to Zurich. Wonder trips and accomodation on board. Would however like to stress the buses in Belize and other ports, they are very dangerous when traveling on dirt roads at excessive speeds. Need to get a hande on who is transporting your passengers. Don't like the fact that we were asked to sign liability waives on each bus we entered. Not a good thing to do particularly when a bus crashed just two weeks after our excursion on the same roads we traveled on to get to the ruins. Read Less

We have done several Viking River Cruises and wanted to try their ocean cruises. The ocean cruise being similar to the river boat cruises in that no casino, shore excursions included at each port, very good food and service, never felt crowded, lectures were quite good, and entertainment was very good. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to avoid smokey casinos, crowded environment, and wanting an excellent experience. The one thing that is needed is a better selection of Craft Beers. Craft beers are extraordinarily popular now and their appeal is still growing, much more so than the Budweiser or European Lagers. Manfredi's Restaurant was outstanding. The Chef's Table was also quite good. Actually, all of the meal venues that I tried were good to outstanding. Did not have to worry with a lot of young drunks or loud people trying to instigate trouble. The overall experience of the people we met was very good to excellent. Most people were fairly friendly and open for discussion. Read Less

We've done a river cruise with Viking and decided to try their relatively new ocean cruise line. We have traveled extensively with the larger cruise lines and found this to be so much more relaxing and attentive. The food was outstanding; the staff was extremely friendly, accommodating and always smiling. With the included shore excursions wi-if, drinks, excellent entertainment, and smooth transitions to get on shore and return to ship, you are hassle free. In one port we were docked next to one of the behemoth cruise ships, and we felt like we were getting onboard our own yacht. Of note regarding the entertainment, there is no casino on board which was fine with us. Also, there is no huge theater production, just a small stage with young enthusiastic good voices singing their hearts out for you. Do not expect a loud music filled pool scene; instead it is quiet and reserved with people sitting around reading and conversing. Pre dinner music is classical or flamenco guitar in the atrium by the Explorer Bar where we enjoyed our cocktails with friends we made the first day. By the way, the silver drink package is well worth it if you enjoy good wine and cocktails. The nightclub is small with a good band and vocalists for dancing; no disco balls here. If you're looking for a more raucous type of entertainment, then this is not for you. The included Caribbean ports were interesting for their Mayan ruins, but I think we became Mayaned out after Belize and Cozumel. Belize City itself and Progresso/Merida were a disappointing trip and not worth the amount of time sitting on a bus. Would we use Viking again? The answer is yes, as we have another river cruise booked! Read Less

We wanted to visit the Yucatán Peninsula to see and learn about the Maya civilization. Thanks to the shore excursions and the onboard lectures we did learn some. Of course we learned how much we still did not know--but this was not the fault of Viking! We could have preferred the port excursions to be a couple hours longer, but certainly there are itinerary reasons that govern that. And it's probably always a good sign that one wants more! The cruise pampering was exquisite--always a treat. Crew members were consistently courteous and reaching out to help. Dining was delicious, and we loved the variety of offerings. The shows and performance were wonderful and professional quality; we enjoyed getting to greet the artists following the performances. I had not mentioned to anyone or at any point that my birthday would occur during the trip. But what a lovely surprise to have a beautiful slice of birthday cake delivered to our cabin on the evening of December 15! It was already a special day, but Viking's thoughtfulness was the ICING on the CAKE, so to speak. :-) Read Less

Four months of traveling alone, both firsts for me (and for the Sun), along with eccentric eating practices, made me rather apprehensive as the embarkation date approached. Instead it was a glorious experience. The variety of the 50+ port excursions, my raison d'être, many ports one-dayers and/or new to Viking, not to mention the preparatory port talks, were well run, seldom a cattle-car experience. The World Cafe provided me with my best dining experience ever, for its variety and convenience. I'd done a short cruise on the sister Viking Star, and was as delighted as I expected to be with the cabin. The senior staff, especially the cruise director, were extraordinarily warm, energetic, and responsive to constructive feedback. Other high points were the duplicate bridge, trivia contests, and library contents. With respect to entertainment, I've never been charmed by stage shows or cocktail parties, but I was delighted to watch the Eagles' march to the Super Bowl during the first weeks crossing the Pacific. Though I'm quite happy by myself, the fellow travelers I met on excursions and shipboard activities were mostly good companions. Only persistent problem was temperature control in the public spaces -- not unexpected for a first cruise in the tropics which were mostly new to Viking. Value for money? Well, compared to the costs of my other travels, I expected this would be a one-off, but not so! Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking and we chose this cruise because of our past experience. The ship is so conveniently designed for the comfort of the passengers. Our Cabin was quite comfortable even for a 122 day cruise. The steward were extremely attentive and took care of our every need. The food was very much to our liking and offered many alternatives for us.there were always excellent alternatives from which to choose. The shore excursions seemed well organized and offered many alternatives from which to choose. There was high quality entertainment every evening. I don’t think we missed more than a handful of the performances. There just seemed to be so many things to do for personal enjoyment. The interaction with so many new friends was awesome and several have kept in touch even four months later. We have booked another, our fourth cruise with Viking and are counting the days. We even booked the same cabin as well. With all of Viking ships constructed and laced out the same it just felt like we were going to our home away from home. We sailed with Viking River Cruises previously and had a wonderful experience. We expected the same with Viking Ocean Cruises. What was originally a 4 port cruise to Belize, Cozumel, Key West and Cuba turned out to be a 1 port cruise to Cuba. This cruise line is totally unprepared for ocean cruising and kept changing the itinerary and rules. The food and service were great. There is practically nothing to do on board. 3 lectures a day; trivia contest which conflicted timewise with the afternoon tea and let's not forget the; terrible "entertainment" is not my idea of a good time. Oh, I forgot the 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle the passengers can work on when there is nothing else to do - which is most of the time. If you want nothing more to do than sleep, lay by the pool and eat this might be the cruise for you. Read Less

We took this cruise due to the list itinerary. It included Key West, Belize, Cozumel, w days docked in Havana, and 2 sea days. It gave a test of destinations that we had never seen. We had been on the sister ship last year and loved the cruise. 2 days before cancellation without penalty or a penalty of $100 a person, we were alerted to an extreme itinerary change. It eliminated Belize, Cozumel and instead of docking in Havana, we were anchored ( not docked) in Cienfugoes, about 150 miles or a 4 hour arduous bus trip one way to Havana. Viking tried to compensate by giving each guest who had signed up for the original itinerary, $250.00 ship board credit, included a night in a hotel and included the shore excursions. There was little to spend on the ship and all of the affordable items were gobbled up immediately. The ship was nice as was the food, service and entertainment. Had the original itinerary been in effect, this would have been an exceptional experience. Oceania had a cruise in the same time slot, but were already booked by the time we were alerted to the extreme itinerary change. Obviously the most disturbing part of this was that we did not get to dock in Havana. I had called Viking several times with questions and got a different spin on the whys of the change. The representatives were all courteous, but apparently not well informed. I checked into future Viking cruises to Cuba. Still no docking in Havana. A shame. This was our 4th Viking cruise. To cruise critic, I cannot think of anything further to add. Ship and service was good. Itinerary was disappointing. Entertainment was good. What more can I say? Read Less

We really enjoyed the Cuban experience but were very disappointed by the cancellations/changes in itinerary. A cruise which included Cuba, Belize, Cozumel, Key west, Miami was reduced to Miami & Cuba. We were informed prior to embarking that the ports of Belize & Cozumel were scraped & we were not pleased. Some of the day excursions were unavailable. Also, we were not permitted to dock inn Havana which caused us to have to take a bus from our port to Havana which was more than 3 hrs. away; not good! The specialty dining was disappointing as well. Due to weather we were unable to visit Key West which was an added disappointment. Cuba was great but our time there did not make up for the rest. We have been on a Viking River cruise & have one scheduled again but would be very wary of Viking Ocean in the future. Read Less

we initially booked when we were docking in multiple ports and Havana so were disappointed with the Cienfuegos docking only for cuba. We weren't able to tender in key west due to rough seas but had been there multiple times as we live in the Miami area so that gave us an extra sea day pretty rough. The problem is that Viking doesn't offer much for sea days as far as activities and entertainment. When we finally did dock in Cienfuegos we had excursions to Trinidad and overnight Havana. The poverty in the rural areas is pretty much like may 3rd world countries. Trinidad had some interesting architecture the lunch was ok but it was very dirty. And they were selling a lot of not very interesting art. We stopped at the mill and had some aggressive vendors forcing birds to stand on you ! One guy grabbed my baseball cap off my head to put on palm leaves I grabbed it back! The overnight Cuba was amazing, although a bit of a hassle with the overnight bag and four hour bus ride each way. The old Havana area was amazing the food was amazing and the classic cars and Tropicana show were all amazing ! The hotel was dated but had a beautiful beachfront location. I wish they had planned it out better and more time in Havana! The people were warm and interesting and welcoming of Americans! Once back on the boat we opened our champagne in the minibar for our cuba sail away. Again was amazing! The boat is breathtakingly beautiful and clean. Service was hit or miss, food was ok in Chefs table and Excellent in the main dining restaurant and Manfredi's Italian. We opted for the silver spirits package once onboard and enjoyed top shelf single malts and grey goose included! The crowd on board were older with a mix of some 40-50's looking to visit cuba. Everyone was well travelled and great in conversation especially after a few scotches! The explorer bar was my favorite and they made the best drinks! The whole boat was very cozy and never felt crowded. The shows were cute if not cheesy and the performers all mingled with the travelers which was awesome! We had a penthouse veranda cabin which was well laid out and nice shower bathroom with warming floor! Spa was nice and new have to check out the ice room! The immigration process in and out of cuba was very easy although we did buy some art in Havana and had to show immigration the receipt or we would have had to pay a 10 CUC tax on leaving the customs area so have some cash when leaving if u have art! the cuc to dollar is essentially a 1 to 1 so not too confusing some vendors even took dollars but u should exchange some CUC when u arrive at the port. So overall a great trip with some minor kinks that Viking hopefully will work out. A great way to see cuba ! Read Less

Wanted to visit Cuba and love sailing with Viking so this was a good fit for us. Rated very good instead of excellent because we did not dock in Havana. Instead we were tendered in Cienfuegos, which is about a 4 hour drive to Havana. Viking offered an included overnight excursion to Havana which we did. We rode in a bus to Havana, visited an artist in their home, had a good tour of old Havana and had a nice lunch with music. Hotel was nice. For dinner, we were picked up in the classic convertibles (a highlight for us) and driven to another restaurant, then onto to Tropicana. Wonderful show. Next day on way back to ship, did a tour of Bay of Pig museum...this could be excluded in future tours, in our opinion. We also did the included excursion to the city of Trinidad. Drive was a little over an hour. Saw more of countryside. Good tour. We had read postings from others who did this trip 2 weeks prior to us so we were prepared with hand sanitizer, tissues, etc. 2 of the restaurants we went to did not have flushing toilets...attendant had to prime them with water after use (maybe too much info there) Sun is a beautiful ship. Never feels crowded. We enjoyed entertainment in the Exployers Lounge and Atrium Bar. The Long and Winding Road show poolside was fun as was the ABBA show. We found service aboard to be wonderful. We were very surprised that they ran out of Chardonnay on Day 2 of our cruise. Our favorite dining is at Manfredi’s. No cost but reservations required. The Restautant also has wonderful food. Not a big fan of The Chefs Table as you have no idea what menu they will offer when you make reservations prior to sailing. It is fixed menu but does have wonderful wine pairing. Would be nice if they would post menus on MyVikingJourney so you could select a day with a menu you would enjoy most. Read Less

We decided on the last minute to join this cruise and explore Cuba. The deciding factor was that we would spend an overnight in Havana. This provided an opportunity to spend more time in the culture. The hotel was beautiful. The experience was fantastic. Viking provided us a drive in vintage American cars through Havana. The driver was personable and friendly. After dinner we were then taken to the Tropicana nightclub for a colorful, entertaining musical dancing show. It was also a time to interact with your fellow shipmates over the bottle of rum provided the 4 of you at the table. The Cuban bus tour guide had perfect English and was well educated and provided wonderful information about Cuba and the people in a delightful manner. It was exactly what we were looking for in a trip. The ship is fantastic. The staff is attentive and professional. We absolutely loved the Chef's Table dinner. We loved how you could grab a cup of coffee or drink, and go find a place to just sit and enjoy it with a book. Very relaxing experience. Read Less

I really wanted to rate this trip a 4.5..... We had taken a Viking River cruise and wanted to try a Viking Ocean cruise. We chose the Cuba cruise, based on the itinerary which also included Belize, and were disappointed when we were informed of the itinerary changes 4 months before departure (Belize was dropped), however, we were more than satisfied with the options Viking offered to compensate for the changes. The ship was fantastic. It was the perfect size, spacious and well-designed. We had one of the larger cabins (Penthouse Veranda) and were very glad we upgraded, although I could have been happy in a "Deluxe" cabin. We liked the extra closet space and larger bathroom. In addition, at our cabin level, we were able to make dinner reservations and select our excursions earlier than lesser-priced cabins, which meant we pretty much got what we wanted, when we wanted it. The staff was wonderful and attentive. The excursions were also well-done and the guides were very knowledgable. I only had two minor complaints. The gym/fitness room is beautiful and well equipped, however, no classes were offered. It would have been nice if some stretch, yoga, Pilates classes had been available. Even small sailboats like Windstar offer early morning classes on the deck. It just seemed a shame that they did not take full advantage of the wonderful workout facility. Secondly, guests need to be aware that the Chef's Table menu changes every three days and alternates between Scandinavian, Asian and French cuisine. This was not mentioned on-line when we made our reservation, so we ended up with the reindeer appetizer rather than the escargot, which would have been my preference. All in all, it was a great trip and we loved the Viking Ocean cruise experience so much that we booked the same ship, same cabin in 2018, with a stop in Belize! I am counting down the days.... We chose to go to Cuba because it was a once in a lifetime experience. There is no telling when and if the US will cut off relations with Cuba. It was quite a memorable experience to say the least. However, it wasn't the trip that we initially signed up for. On several occasions we were scheduled for dinner reservations, however when we arrived at the dining room, we were told they did not have our reservations. The first incident, we were told that we called and cancelled our reservations, which was not true but we were able to have dinner that night. We then made a second reservation and when we went to eat, we were told they did not have a reservation for us. We were then asked to wait or come back later, we said forget it and left. Our excursions were booked before the cruise. While others received their excursion tickets, ours were missing. I had to go back later to check on them and they were ready for me the next day. We were on the December 1-8, 2017 cruise to Cuba on The Viking Sun. Very beautiful new ship with really nice public areas, pool, spa, and fitness center. Like the river cruises, Viking did an outstanding job with the Cuba tours with highlight being and included stay at a very nice Havana hotel and Tropicana Show. Cuban guides were excellent! Reason for giving Average score for Dining and Service: 1. Breakfast and lunch buffets were nice, but had some quirks. Only one side of the World Cafe had a salad bar and way too many desserts! 2. Wine service in the Restaurant was very poor because they only has 3 wine stewards, leaving only one for the Restaurant and the others for the specialty restaurants. Never did they announce what white or red wine they were pouring, nor did they offer a wine list. Once they lost a bottle of Chardonnay we had purchased, and after much to-do looking for it ending up just giving us a free bottle. The Head Waiter agreed with me about the poor service but said that upper management was not listening to his recommendations. Service was excellent in specialty restaurants. The Viking Band was excellent and really livened the place. Demographics of passengers were 60+ years in age and were retired college professor/ school teacher types, not saying their is anything wrong with that! Overall great cruise and beautiful new ship. Viking just needs to iron out some service issues in the Restaurant. Read Less

We had always wanted to go to Cuba, and when Viking said it was going, we signed up. While there were obstacles along the way (Cuba nixing port call for us in Havana, unexplained medical problems suffered by American diplomats in Cuba, itinerary changes, U.S. Cuba travel regulation changes), we are very glad we didn't cancel this cruise. There was some extra effort in getting to Havana, but Viking outdid itself by working with a travel agency to give us a fabulous experience that was interesting, fun, and well choreographed. Of course the ship is beautiful, as was our cabin. Dining is great. My husband loves the World Cafe, and I love eating outside if the weather is decent, so we spent a lot of time in the World Cafe. Activities were low-keyed but adequate for probably the majority of people Viking atracts. We appreciated the free internet and included excursions, and the extras Viking gave us when our itinerary was changed. Free use of the spa pool, sauna, etc. was nice too, although I'm not much of a spa person. We thought the port talks were excellent. While the entertainers didn't present the big, splashy nightly shows that some other cruise lines present, we felt the quality was high. We loved the service on the ship, and the little things as well - ship phone number on your key card, door bell, more drawers on the Sun, placement of your luggage on the bed when you embark, etc. I liked the impromptu/informal gatherings in the Atrium, and the fact that the cruise director was personable but not in-your-face friendly/accessible. Most importantly, I think the excursions were well run, and I know how hard that must have been, given that Cuba is a new country for Viking. Yes, we spent time on buses, but hopefully Viking will gain approval to go to Havana in another year or so when Cuba feels it can handle more visits. Also, hopefully people will feel freer to arrange their own excursions and not be dependent upon ship excursions, which are usually more expensive with less quality than what can be arranged on your own. Given what Viking had to work with, I think they and Cuba Travel Services did a fabulous job. I loved Trinidad, and of course Havana was very interesting and rewarding to visit. Those classic cars everywhere make Cuba a pretty unique travel destination, and I'm glad I got to see (and experience) Cuba before it is completely overrun with American tourists. My only regret is that despite visiting Cienfuegos, I had little time and energy left over to see much of it! Read Less

We wanted to visit Cuba, and Viking offered the most comprehensive experience for a cruise tour. This was our second Viking cruise (the first was a river cruise in France), and we were delighted. The shore excursions (including an overnight in Havana) were well-planned and enjoyable, and the small boat was far superior to the larger boats that we'd experienced on previous ocean cruises. As on our first Viking cruise, we found it easy to make friends, and we've kept in touch with several of our cruise friends. On other cruises, we've found ourselves racing through shore excursions, while, with Viking, the schedule is flexible and responsive to what the travelers need and/or want. The food is quite good, and the ship staff are uniformly excellent. The cabins are comfortable and well-designed, so we never felt cramped or inconvenienced. For what it's worth, we also got a great view of the crew practicing their evacuation procedures, and it was very reassuring. Viking is not taking chances with safety! We highly recommend Viking--We've already booked our next Viking cruise and are looking at a fourth! Read Less
