My wife and I and our good friends celebrated our 50th wedding anniversaries together via the Viking Homelands Cruise. We enjoyed a couple of extra days in Stockholm prior to embarkation so that was a treat; our third time in Stockholm and I hope we have many more. The Ship was spectacular, the crew was outstanding, and the overall experience was excellent. We expected a few glitches due to the fact the Viking Star was on its inaugural cruise with actual paying customers from Stockholm to Bergen and there were a few. Certainly there was one excursion we would vote to have removed and that was the Ice Bar in Helsinki. Our expectations may have been too high but vodka shots and a dog sled in a tin shed were not what we bargained for. The other minor issue was dinner on board at the Chef's Table. The food and service we exceptional, however, the menu rotated once every 9-11 days. We had two reservations and would have had the same meal for the second reservation as we has for the first. My expectation of a "Chef's Table" was for the Chef to feature a different menu daily highlighting some of his/her experimental or signature dishes. Everything else was great. The cabins were roomy, comfortable, and well appointed. The service staff was well prepared to meet our needs. We hated to disembark although Bergen is a great place to claim land once more. We finished the trip in Iceland with a post-cruise extension. Interesting place; great people, nice to visit but why people would live there I will never know. (They might say the same thing about my homeland!!) We have enjoyed three Viking River Cruises (Russia, Southern France, and China) and will definitely do more of them. Will also keep itineraries for the Viking Star on our radar because we loved the size of the ship and the quality accommodations. Read Less

We choose Viking because we had already done the Danube and had a wonderful time. We began with an extended stay in Iceland and ended with an extended stay in Barcelona. The service, hotels, etc were exceptional. We had to intercept the boat in Copenhagen as this new boat had a problem as it was coming from St. Petersberg. Viking not only accommodated us with extra nights in Bergen, flew us to Copenhagen and gave us credit on a future trip so we are headed to France for two weeks with extra nights in Paris. The food was exceptional, especially the Chef's Table. If you like seafood this is the cruise to be on. What impressed us the most is that the boat only housed about 910 passengers We did not want to be on any boat bigger than this. At no time did we feel overwhelmed with the number of passengers. Viking has so impressed us that we are also booked a trip to China and Tibet with them and we are looking into other future trips with Viking as well. Choose your shore excursions carefully. Most were very good, a few we could have probably learned more by ourselves but since we had not been to these cities before we definitely got a good introduction to the history and sights. Entertainment and various talks were great. We were disappointed with the "flamenco" dancers; wee saw better dancers in the courtyards on shore. Personally I was glad to see that there was a "Friends of Bill" meeting on board but they could have had one meeting a week instead of one every two weeks especially on a long ocean cruise. For me it was not an issue but for one passenger who was traveling with several friends who drank a lot, she definitely needed someone to talk to. Perhaps there could be some other way for recovering people to identify themselves to each other. Read Less

We had taken a river cruise in October and loved it. We thought the Mediterranean Cruise would be just as good we were not disappointed the food, cabin, staff were excellent. The excursions were all well thought out. However a suggestion would be that at some excursions the time was too short and at other places it was too long a stay. I think this was expressed by others on the excursions even the tour guides . I think that some fine tuning on the excursion time frames for each destination would make things perfect. But all in all it was a trip of a life time for us . We loved the entertainment. The spa grotto was also amazing and refreshing after a days excursion. Read Less

We have been on three Viking river cruises, thought the Med cruise and Viking Star was worth a try, even though we thought the ship would be too big for us. It was wonderful! Great food, great tours, beautiful cities, awesome staff, beautiful and clean cabin. We enjoyed the Star singers and dancers; went to a few of their shows. We ate in the dining room most mornings and evenings but did have a couple if meals at the buffet and the pool grill and Mamsen's. It is a beautiful, comfortable ship. No issues w/ embarking/disembarking. Got from and to the airports safely and w/ plenty of time. We stayed in Venice two nites before embarking. Venice is a beautiful, friendly city. We stayed at the Hilton Molino Stucky on Guidecca and had a beautiful view of the main island of Venice. We had a wonderful meal at a small restaurant o Guidecca. We shopped in Murano, we bought masks at Ca' Macana, ate pizza, drank wine, had a gondola ride, walked everywhere. The vaporettos and water taxis are fun and safe. Not a cruise for children, but we did some late-20's people. It is really more for retired or almost-retired people; in their 50's and older. We will go again, probably September 2017, In the Wake of the Vikings. We also want to do. Portugal river cruise and another France cruise. Seriously, no complaints. We loved all of it! We met a couple our age on our first river cruise in 2011; we have done the others w/ them and will schedule our next cruise w/ them. You will meet wonderful, friendly people! Read Less

We were a group of 6 couples who took advantage of the 2 for 1 deal offered by Viking, cruising the Meditteranean from Venice to Istanbul on the Viking Star. For most of us, it was a first cruise on a smaller ship and we were not sure what to expect. The Star's crew and the ship itself met and exceeded our expectations. The ship is state of the art in its technology and appointments. From the consistent wifi on board to the clear, concise updates of all our daily activities to be found on our personal accounts, to the beautiful computer graphics of varied Viking journeys to be found on the coffee tables in the stunning atrium, the ship is first class all the way. The staff and crew were solicitous, courteous and took care of any requests we had expeditiously. For example, when we requested a special meal to be prepared for us to celebrate a festival, they not only obliged but outdid themselves in the thought and care they put into its preparation. Dining options were plentiful, with several restaurants and cafe's offering varied options. Shore excursions were timely, informative and varied. Since the ship docked early in the morning and was in port most of the day, there was ample time to do one or sometimes two excursions per day. The theater, jazz club and atrium offered fun music and dance presentations performed by energetic youngsters who got everyone energized as well! Both the embarkation and disembarkation process was seamless and easy. The crew and staff took care of the luggage and registration procedures were quick and painless. Room for improvement? Of course! The exercise facilities could be larger, more vegetarian food options could be offered and the high tea service could have expanded space and hours. However, overall this cruise was the best that we have taken thus far and an excellent value for the money. We have been strongly recommending it to all our friends. Thank you Viking Star staff and crew, for a wonderful and memorable 9 days! Read Less

Absolutely fantastic. We stayed in Istanbul for two days before the cruise on our own and three days in Venice at the end of the cruise. My evaluation would be to tour the Blue Mosque and Sofia Mosque in Istanbul, and spend a few days getting to know Venice at the end of the cruise. Overall we are very pleased with the cruise and the ship. Absolutely and totally perfect in the ship's appearance, on board expectations and entertainment and food, all more than expectations. Also, the staff, especially Marta, as desk and cruise ship liason for rooms and people traffic, she was excellent. Our rooms were more spacious than our former Viking Cruise rooms and of course the room stewards we very attentive. I used room service for late night delivery and that was very efficient. All staff were friendly and took the time to get to know us and tell us about their home town base and when they might travel again. We highly recommend Viking to our friends and family and will travel again with Viking. This was our third cruise, the past, which is our favorite of all, Amsterdam to Budapest, and then China. All so many memories to cherish. Thank you, Viking and staff! Read Less

We sailed on this Viking Ocean cruise because of our great experience with Viking River cruise and we were definitely not disappointed. The same comforting, friendly, and expert service was shown on the Ocean cruise. We heard other Viking River cruise veterans say that they also felt the same regarding their first time on the Viking Ocean cruise. They would certainly return for another Viking Cruise, Ocean or River. The ship's crew, ship's staff, on-shore reps, tour guides and bus drivers were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable in making our vacation a great experience. The inclusive shore excursions were well planned and enjoyable. The optional tours were very interesting and added to the overall travel experience. At our embarkation port of Barcelona, we signed up for the optional Gaudi tour and thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely learned a lot about this person and his beautiful architecture. We also signed up for the Flamenco dinner/show which was excellent and was not to be missed. We opted for the post-cruise stay in Rome and enjoyed the extra days to enjoy the city. We added another Vatican tour to add to the Viking tour we had already taken. Our hotel was in a very nice area and close to transportation and some shopping and restaurants. The hotel was very nice, clean, and comfortable. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. On our departure day, we were picked up by a Viking representative who escorted us to the airport, thru the ticket check-in and to the security check-point. A plus for Viking for sure! Our cabin on the Viking Star was on the Deluxe Veranda deck and was very comfortable and roomy. The bathroom was a very spacious and seemed to be from an on-land hotel room instead of a cruise ship. Our room steward was attentive to our needs and comfort. We weren't able to experience the various dining options aboard the ship but very much enjoyed the dining variety/choices and daily specials at the main dining room. The galley staff, cooks, and servers were friendly and courteous. The food was delicious, plentiful, and tasty. There was always a variety of yummy desserts and scoops of gelato. The Viking Star is beautiful, clean, and well-designed ship that was definitely built for the comfort and convenience of it's vacationing guests. Viking has certainly successfully brought over it's river cruise experience to it's new ocean cruise line. Read Less

Excellent choice for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration...Barcelona to Barcelona. Lovely antiquities aboard ship. Great accommodations. Would rather not have walked so far to begin excursions. River boats do spoil you for close accessibility. Crew and staff were more than hospitable and made our voyage a trip to remember. The assortment of excursions was more than expected and the port history, etc. talks outstanding with excellent background information. Viking made our trip memorable from our flight arrangements, transportation, ground travel and terrific, top line entertainment. Our cabin was neatly kept with a fine hostess who made every effort to please us with her pleasant disposition. The TV system was better than expected. Dining was always a pleasure, and the various restaurants, tea areas as well as entertaining music provided was so relaxing and pampering as well as chic. Excellent service. Cannot say enough about the well organized itinerary of our port choices, length of stay and attention to detail. Very impressive from start to finish! Always a pleasant and helpful crew/staff. Heard so many wonderful things about Viking and the itinerary on this particular cruise was exactly what we are interested in. The ship and our cabin were luxurious! Dining a treat! Now we would like to experience a Viking river cruise in the near future so we are looking at their river cruise itineraries. The Viking Star is a smaller ship. I have sailed out of Port Canaveral several times on various cruise lines(I won't mention any names!) with larger ships. I enjoyed the smaller ship and smaller crowds. The ship itself is beautiful. Our cabin was quite comfortable and our steward, Michael, was a joy and took excellent care of us. I told him I didn't know how I would be able to take care of myself after the cruise! There are several offerings as far as dining. The Chef's Table is particularly fun with the different food and wine pairings. There is Manfredi's if you like Italian. And The Restaurant has just about everything else you could possibly want. We took in a few of the stage shows. The spa is lovely and we enjoyed that several times. I cannot say enough good about the meticulous detail Viking puts into itineraries. Informative programs about destinations are televised and can be accessed in your cabin. Guest speakers(professors, etc.) who have expertise about some of the destinations actually travel on board and give presentations. Maps of all ports are available. We had all local guides at the various destinations who add a personalized touch to what would otherwise be just factual information. We are personally interested in the cultural, historical aspects of the destinations so this cruise was a joy. Due to the unfortunate occurrence in Istanbul our itinerary was changed mid-cruise but I feel Viking did the best they could under the circumstance, and actually managed it quite well with little planning time. We had already decided to stay on a few days in Istanbul by ourselves so when Ancient Troy(bucket list!!!) was added we were thrilled, we knew we would be sailing right past it but had no idea we would get to stop and see it! Sailed with Viking before & found their ships to always be excellent. It was a new ship & from all the literature, it appeared to be a first class ship. We weren't disappointed. Stateroom was very roomy & comfortable. All the restaurants were very well appointed with outstanding food. Common areas were very attractive. Shore excursions were excellent in content, places visited & quality of the guides. We've been on about 12 cruises & the Viking Star was the best ever. Also liked relatively low number of passengers. Only disappointment was that the ship failed to set its clocks ahead by one hour for Turkish daylight savings on Sunday, 27 March. This resulted in wakeup calls coming to the staterooms an hour late. We were also disappointed in not seeing Istanbul, but fully understood the reason. Croatia was probably our favorite stop, particularly, Dubrovnik, where we had the excursion of the cruise. My wife had a cyst which erupted while on board. The required several visits to sick bay where she received excellent treatment from a very professional and caring staff. This exceeded our expectations. Had an opportunity to meet the Captain who we found to be very "down to earth", polite and outgoing. The wait staff in every restaurant was top quality, extremely friendly, had a good sense of humor and provided excellent service. This was one our very best cruises ever and we'll be back to Viking again. About the only disappointment was that they just dropped us at the Istanbul Airport without any guidance of what to expect or how to proceed with check-in. Read Less

We went on a Viking three week river cruise in 2014 and found it excellent so we, myself, husband and eldest daughter, booked on a Viking Ocean Cruise for 50 days departing Istanbul on 3rd April 2016 After we had booked, we found out that this would be the Viking Sea's maiden voyage and were a little apprehensive but decided that we would trust the Viking company and made our plans to have a few days in Istanbul and then board the vessel on 3rd April, 2016 We had booked a Junior Penthouse Suite and our daughter had Deluxe Verandah right next door on Deck 7. We chose the Penthouse Suite because of the large area of 405sq.ft and it was close to lifts, swimming, dining and the winter garden area. We were welcomed aboard at 11.00am. our boarding time without any problems of hold up. Our luggage was taken onto the boat and the thing that impressed us on boarding and indeed on the whole of the 50 day trip, was the smiling welcome and greeting that everyone from the Captain, the officers, all the staff and crew gave you every day. It was so welcoming and you immediately felt like 'family' aboard and with every single member of the ship smiling and asking how was your day, etc. you responded with an equal smile and answer. Viking are to be praised for training all their employees in this manner. Our cabin was perfect, the bed and down pillows comfortable. We had two television sets, a refrigerator stocked with drinks and goodies, our own coffee pod machine and plenty of drawers and wardrobe space. The cosmetic and jewellery drawer that lit up with LED lights when opened so you could put your make up in the mirror in its lid. It was so good I drew out the design and measurements hoping to have something similar constructed in our own home when we got back. The bathroom/ensuite was another thing. Heated floor, two basins, huge heated towel rails and a big acrylic shower recess which was huge. Love the tap where you could just adjust the temperature and flow of the water and it was always hot whenever you wished to shower day or night. Toiletries were provided and were of a high standard as were the huge white soft towels changed as often as you wished. The restaurants, bars and grills where you could always find somewhere available to eat and the food was just out of this world. We tried all the restaurants and each was really special in its own way. We did use the World Cafe mostly for breakfast and lunches as it was on our deck level. The food variety was fantastic and you could have as much or as little as you wished. Never in the whole 50 days of our cruise did we have to queue up with no more than two or three people at the counter. The Chefs Table was a five course degustation menu with complimentary wines with each course. Bookings were essential but there was never a problem getting in. The Restaurant was delightful and a really comprehensive menu as was Manfredis with an Italian menu. The Pool Grill and Mamsens were also incredible as was the High Tea served every afternoon at 4.00pm in the Wintergarden. The entertainment provided was world class bringing in international artists on the piano, violin, singing and dancing which was augmented by the permanent entertainers, four male and four female giving many evenings of opera, music, dancing which kept us enthralled. There were several other musicians, pianists, a three piece band, a three piece classical group, and a guitarist which played in various sections of the ship daily and there was always the resident vocalist and Viking Band setting the scene with toe tapping numbers to take you to the dance floor every evening till midnight. There were so many information talks with specialist experts on board enlightening us with information on the geology, history, ships and their development from little rafts to the great ships of today, We learnt all about the European Union, and I could go on and on about all the interesting facts and talks that were available if you wish to attend. The Port Talks availing you of everything about the next port you would be visiting and all the amazing excursions provided with competent guides and drivers with their big comfortable buses. Viking Sea Cruises are advertised as an enrichment cruise about the history and culture of the many places and countries you visit. In our case of 50 days it was 18 countries and 38 ports. The cruise is definitely more for the mature 50 plus traveller and there are no children on board under 18 as there are no facilities for them. Being retired and not as agile as earlier years this was the perfect cruise for my husband and self and our daughter who is 57. Once on board everything is covered with your initial fare. Wine and beer was supplied at lunch and dinner and there were numerous VIP cocktail parties where plentiful drinks were supplied. Gratuities were included in your fare and as one cruiser said, he had been on board for three weeks and hadn't spent a penny. Of course a visit to the hairdresser, beauty salon, massage etc. incurred a fee as did the items in the jewellery shop and Viking shop, but to spend there was purely a choice. They did have another shop where you could purchase necessities like toothpaste, some medications for colds or sore throats and any other little things you might have forgotten to bring or had used up. I should mention here that Viking are incredibly particular about cleanliness and hygiene. There were many little hand spray machines scattered all over the ship where you could sanitise your hands and definitely before entering any of the dining rooms. They always had a lovely smiling crew member welcoming you to wherever you were going to eat and they would remind you so politely to disinfect your hands before eating. There was a doctor on board but we managed to go the 50 days without any problems with health or catching any colds or tummy upsets. To my knowledge the ship was pretty free of any nasties for the whole cruise. Our cabin stewards cleaned every vertical and horizontal surface in our cabin daily, Mirrors, walls, balcony, ensuite, nothing was missed and it was vacuumed daily, sometimes even twice a day. Towels and sheets were changed on a daily basis and all in all we were treated like I think the Kings and Czars and their families were looked after in the magnificient palaces we visited on our excursions. All I can say, for people who want to have a really interesting cruise without gambling, big water adventure equipment and other enticements, Vijking have got it right. With a passenger maximum of 930 people, nothing was ever crowded and there was always plenty of room wherever you wanted to be. I can only recommend them as a exciting and marvellous cruise operation and especially as I commenced this review, the smiling and welcome and great to assist you attitude of all their officers, staff and crew really makes your day such a pleasant and happy time. A group invited us to join them and we were already familiar with the quality of the Viking Experience. But this was above and beyond! This was their inaugural sailing, supposedly to work out the "bugs". But where were the bugs? We didn't see any. The embarkation port was not availble to tour with Viking and we left Istanbul as soon as all were on board, due to safety concerns about the situation in Istanbul at the time. Everthing went like clockwork. But Viking came up with another treat, a call at the port near Troy, which we would not have probably ever toured had this not occured. It was not as "touristy" a stop, very educational, and while we were disappointed about missing Istanbul, it was a worthy substitute. No kids! Yeah! Love kids, but this is not a cruise for them and the ability to find some quiet space for a nap, or a good book, was most relaxing. Tea in the afternoon was very special, with lovely strings in the background. The spa, fitness center, steam room were top notch, and we both used their facilities daily. Educational topics were raised before each landing, advising us quite well on navigating the upcoming shore adventures. Most excursions were well done, and when we expressed a disappointment about one of them, we were accorded a complete refund when we had not even asked for one. I suspect that guide will not be working for them again. Our room was state of the art with all we could have desired. If there was a need (I cannot think of one) our steward was always availble with the most cheerful, friendly demeanor. Everything was spotless, and I miss the attentiveness to our comfort. And the food! That was another delight. Our group of 8 cornered the market in the "special dining areas" and they were very accommodating. We could not have asked for more (except dessert!). One of the most impressive experiences was when we disembarked in Venice, a lady fell. Viking employees were right there, had an ambulance, off to the hospital for a thorough checkup and then within less than three hours, back to the airport and on our flight home. Her daughter was with her, they were accompanied all the time by Viking employees and her daughter's remarks were very favorable as to the caring, effiicient, treatment Viking had provided. And would we go again? We are desperately trying right now to get on the Viking Sky which is completely booked. Sure would! Read Less

Viking is a major supporter of PBS television and their ads held great appeal. Friends had taken the cruise and highly recommended it. The itinerary included both typical Northern European ports as well as Norwegian fjords and hence was very appealing since most cruises do one or the other. The organization of tours, embarkation etc. was very impressive and wait times were virtually non-existant. The entertainment on ship included a variety of different musical styles and the musicians very talented. The meals were excellent with fine food and a varied selection. The wait staff were very friendly and the service efficient. As described later, the cabin was excellent. Not having a casino was another positive feature. The common areas of the ship were inviting and you never felt like the ship was crowded. Although very fortunate with the weather, the sailing was extremely calm and comfortable. This would rate as one the best trips my wife and I have ever been fortunate enough to take. Read Less

Invited to join group of friends and the take in the beauty of the coast of Norway and intriguing Scotland. New and pleasant ship and great crew with spectacular scenery and interesting ports along the way. Cabin was very nice and new but more modest than we have experienced on other cruise line for the same category. Better entertainment than we have had on past cruises but the food was not up to the standards we enjoyed on Oceania cruises along the coast of France and Italy and from Turkey to Greece. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. We did experience problems with tours being unorganized with last minute changes. Air travel arrangements via Viking was not smooth or easily managed. An example was that we had to wait to secure seating on several flights and neither Viking or the Airlines could assist us so we were left with inferior seating choices and given few alternatives for upgrades. I would certainly reconsider using the air services provided by Viking. Also, disliked having to pay in full almost three years in advance of the cruise date. Read Less

Would have preferred more time in Amsterdam or Helsinki. We have traveled with Viking and are looking forward to our ocean and river cruises we have booked for next year. The rooms and service were very nice. The restaurants were nice, but we didn't enjoy The Chef's Table as much as the other dining venues. The food was very good, but we felt rushed at The Chef's Table; it wasn't a very relaxing experience. The ship as I said was very nicely sized - we do not do the "monster" cruises. It was also very clean and all the staff was very attentive. Our most enjoyable shore excursions were Gdansk, Amsterdam, Stavanger, and Helsinki. We did a number of additional tours and found them all worth the extra we paid, except for Berlin. Read Less

We wanted to see the Greek islands. We scheduled to leave out of Istanbul but the State Department warning level got too high and Viking was on top of it. They handled all changes to the itinerary very well including resets of the plane transportation. To compensate for the loss of some Turkish port stops, additional Greek and Adriatic ports were substituted along with the usual excursion/tour at each port. We only opted for an optional tour once (in Athens) as the included tours were excellent and covered much in each port. The Viking Sea is of course one of the new ships with under 1000 customers and therefor none of the stress of the larger ships (need to be someplace doing something at all times). Only the Sanorini tour suffered from an excess of people on other tours spoiling the experience. The accommodations were very good although to combat people like me leaving the slider deck door open all the time the off switch to the air conditioner is tied to it. The food was very well prepared with many choices. All staff was friendly and professional. Over 20 years ago I observed the staff response at a Ritz Carlton to each acknowledgement of them (thank you) to be "my pleasure". Likewise for Viking. Read Less

We had not been to Scandinavia or the Baltic states and were anxious to go to this area. Viking's ocean cruise there seemed to offer all the places we wanted to go with the luxury of not having to pack and unpack and sail from one location to another while we slept. It was the perfect choice. Loved everything about the trip. The Viking Star was a lovely ship and the staff/crew was outstanding in every way. We had done a Viking river cruise and loved it so that is one reason we chose Viking over other options. The shore excursions were numerous with many options in each location, sometimes hard to decide which one to take. The local guides provided great insight into the region. I wish we could have had more time in St. Petersburg, especially at the Hermitage. There was so much to see and not enough time and we had no control as to the areas we visited in the museum. We had good weather and only one day with rain, which did not hamper or tour or "dampen" the experience. The food was excellent and varied with a nice number of restaurants to chose from. We could chose to have fine dining and linger over the dinner table or we could do a buffet meal quickly to move on to our next activity. There was so many choices on board of things to do we never get to do them all. We were never board. The entertainment while on the Viking Star was outstanding with options varying from the concert pianist, string trio, the ship's band to the performers (singers and dancers). The Aba show was really fun and the digital set state of the art. The young performers were very talented and always put on a superb show. We are already planning out next trip with Viking Ocean and have talked to a number of friends about joining us. (we went with a group of 3 couples) Bravo Viking Star! Read Less

For our 40th wedding anniversary, my wife and decided to take a Mediterranean cruise. I chose Viking because of the reviews. We couldn't have been more pleased with the choice. All the personnel I encountered in the planning stages were superb. When we arrived in Athens, we were met by Viking porters and were treated very well. Embarkation was smooth and without any issues. The ship was fairly new at the time. I believe it had been in service for just a few months. It was well maintained and looked new. When we arrived at our suite, I realized I made a mistake. The suite was designated as ADA. My wife and I do not need an ADA room. When I asked about being moved to a regular suite, we were moved within an hour to a different suite. The suite was great! King size bed, living area, balcony, a large bathroom with heated floors and a heated towel rack. What more could you ask for? The cabin stewards were excellent. Room service was great! All entertainment we attended was great. A board ship there were a few specialty restaurants (included in cruise fare) where we ate dinner a few times. Service and food was good. We chose to eat most of our meals at the buffet... which was awesome. Every shore excursion we took was great! We visited Athens, Mykonos (Greece), Rhodes, Cyprus, Israel (2 ports), Heraklion (Greece), Naples and Rome. I would have liked to have more time in the Holy Land, but we had been there before. Because we extended our cruise in the final port, we were required to get our own transportation to the B&B. I would highly recommend this cruise, the excursions, and Viking Cruise Line. Note: There were NO kids on board. The cruise is geared towards adults. I would not recommend taking kids on this cruise. Read Less

Exceptional choice of ports serving regions of magnificent history and diverse cultures. Our second Viking experience coming after the Budapest to Amsterdam river cruise which was stunning. Fearing (only slightly) this would just have to be at least a little of a letdown, only because the river cruise was so perfect, we were not disappointed. First class all the way. The Viking Sea is the perfect size for this open water experience. Would recommend in a heartbeat! The staff who greeted us at the airport were highly visible, spoke perfect English and were so friendly and helpful. The same is true of the Viking crew who met us at the embarkation terminal and ushered us aboard ship. Our baggage arrived at our cabin door promptly. Our cabin steward immediately greeted us, carried our bags in and explained all cabin features and nuances. Throughout the entire cruise Jay (I think his name was) served us as though we were royalty. The food and service was top notch. Finally our Captain was utterly professional, and made him accessible and allowed us tours of the engine control room and bridge. FIVE STARS Read Less

We have taken 3 river cruises with Viking and been very pleased with the experience, so naturally we considered them when we starting thinking of for a blue water adventure. We were continually amazed at the level of service, the array of activities available on board and ashore in included and available excursions. A few negatives: 1. On shore experiences the guides spent altogether too much time making local shopping available to the passengers. Naturally, frequent rest room breaks are appreciated; but on a number of the excursions in Greece & Israel particularly, we were obviously & continually being dumped into souvenir shops. Most tourists want to take back souvenir items for themselves and acquaintances, but the amount of time spent in such shops could have been better spent on useful touring. 2. The tour of Haifa's Bahai Gardens is not worth the effort - amounted to peeking thru gates from the top of the hill for 2 minutes. If their religious strictures restrict the access to their facility, the limited time in port would be much better spent elsewhere. 3. In Jerusalem, as my wife is of Armenian heritage, she naturally wanted to visit the Armenian Quarter. There was no tour that offered even a brief foray into that area; therefore, she bolted the tour and ventured on her own to satisfy her desire. She is an experienced traveller and rejoined the tour as agreed after an hour's diversion on her own. You may consider accommodating that need in future tours. Read Less

I'm a huge history and ancient mythology student and "fan". We went to so many of the places I've always dreamt of seeing. We could have had two days in Rome to have been able to see more of that wonderful city. Every location had tours / activities with knowledgeable guides. Only one exception was in Cyprus, the guide was an archeologist in France and merely read the information from the signage, repeated herself, and interested in having coffee and visiting with locals at the sight. With some travels using walkers and canes, she did not insure their safety but let them "explore". Loved Rhodes and the cooking class, the guide with us, gave us hints on the town and shopping, reminded us of our timing and afterward let us shop and walk back to the ship. Jerusalem’s guide respected all religions and answered all questions on the historical locations and made it great. Pompeii was a dream come true to able to walk back in time in a city of pure history, when we were told we were only seeing a section and there were to more explore, let alone that a third remains unexcavated, you felt and were awed by the history. I've many people of the wonderful crew, so helpful and positive, the beauty of the ship, the cultural treasures in music, art and lectures available to you, the availability of the Spa, and lastly the indescribable cuisine available for each meal but particularly for dinner. We felt like we were going to the best restaurants in the Mediterranean every day. Our fellow explorers were as interesting as everything we did and made friends immediately which added to the magical experience. It was a small group of educated adults to share your time with. No children or teens and no hard selling of photos and other “items” so everywhere on cruises made you know that this is a quality experience. I came home planning my next Viking Cruise - No other cruise line could ever match the once in a lifetime experience of a Viking Cruise. You have spoiled my daughter and I for any other cruise be it river or ocean. We are anticipating a special river cruise when my grad-daughter earns her Doctorate in a few years. We can’t wait to enjoy the Viking experience again. Brava! Read Less

Choose this cruise because we winter-over in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and the cruise embarked from San Juan, which is only a 45 minute plane trip. Arrival at the ship was easy and the check-in procedures were easily completed. The staff at the check-in were very helpful and informative about what was going to occur on the cruise. The ship is beautiful and extremely clean and well-maintained. The ship itself was uncrowded and easy to navigate around the decks. Decks were well-marked and adequate elevators were available for those who wanted to use them. Stateroom (Veranda Penthouse 6th deck) was immaculate and well-stocked with a complete mini bar and beverages as we desired. Fresh drinking water was provided twice daily and turn-down service was nightly. The cabin stewards were friendly and attentive to our needs. Dining, in all venues was outstanding, especially the World Cafe on the 7th Deck, which had an excellent variety of food items with each meal served (gelato was available throughout the day as well as gourmet coffees and teas). We were unable to stop at our first port-call in Road Town due to weather conditions, but all the other stops were on-time and the docking procedures were smooth and coordinated. Tours provided at each port call were basic, well-guided and informative. We especially enjoyed the free time we had in each port to shop and see local attractions near the ports. Would definitely recommend this cruise for people who really are more interested in LEARNING and ENRICHING their knowledge of the sites seen. Read Less

We choose this cruise to celebrate the anniversaries oft of the couples in our group. The beginnings of the cruise were wonderful. The ship and cabins are great. the crew is very good and made every effort to provide a wonderful experience. On the third day of the cruise the port promotions system failed and we were force to return to Barcelona and end the trip. Viking did their best to make this bad situation as good as possible. The service never changed even after they said we would get a full refund. the only weak point was Viking air. The return flights they found made for a very difficult and tiring trip. I realize it was a bad time of year but would like them to tell me what the new flights look like before I give up my old. I would have stayed more days rather than take the flights provided. Still like Viking and am going to take another cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was for New Year's in the Mediterranean and we wanted something different for New Year's 2017. Traveled without children. (The cruise was from Barcelona Spain, Toulon France, Monte Carlo Monaco, Florence/Pisa Italy, Rome Italy, Valletta Malta, Tunis/La Goulette Tunisia, Valeencia Spain and back to Barcelona, Spain.) We arrived in Barcelona, Spain and were greeted by Viking personnel and transported to the ship 'Viking Sea' which was docked in the harbor. We booked a Veranda BUT were upgraded to a Penthouse Veranda, absolutely wonderful. Left the port the second night for Toulon France, when the Turbine went Kaboom. The Captain assured us that the ship was SAFE, and the Engineers are working on the problem. Next morning we woke up and we were in Barcelona,Spain harbor. The announcement came and 2 options were provided (ship was still save). Returned to Barcelona vs, Toulon harbor because of the repair that needed to be done. Option 1 - Return back home as soon as Airline reservation can be obtained and receive money back plus 50%. Option 2 - Stay on the ship for the endurance of the cruise in Barcelona and receive money back plus 50%. We decided to stay for the endurance of the trip. Viking provided daily additional shore excursions, shuttle service to go into town, live entertainment on ship, lectures, and other arrangements. The trip was wonderful!!! Read Less

We spent two nights in Barcelona before the cruise and two nights in Rome at the end of the cruise. Both cities have so much culture and good food. The Viking reps at the hotels helped set up excursions, gave us maps, set up dinner reservations. We have always been very pleased with Viking; this was our second ocean cruise with them. The staff on the ship was wonderful; our cabins were clean and comfortable; the food was delicious, as always; the excursions were informative and fun. We did a lot of walking, which is what we like. We used the gym on the ship three times, but we used to pool only once, because we were so busy on excursions and staying in town. We didn't see any entertainment for the same reason. We are already planning a river cruise for fall 2018 and an ocean cruise for 2019. We have been on three river cruises w/ Viking. We have never had a complaint w/ Viking, it is a wonderful company.
