We Arrived in Athens, we did the extension. I think it would be good to be more informative about the options on tours during the extensions. We had no idea that any tours could be booked there, so we did research and booked our own before arriving. As it turned out we did end up booking another tour with Viking that was guided, to the Acropolis. And thank goodness I had booked a "Private tour" for the same thing the next day, that wasn't guided, but since it was Private, we asked to be taken to different things. The lack of information might have been because we went through a tour company and they didn't know. But again, I think it should be a priority for that information to be given out, it would have been nice to have that option. Embarkation was a delight; we have been on two others cruise and it was so long. We ended our cruise in Rome, it was epic. We saw so many wonderful things. The ship was wonderful very beautiful and Clean. Same with our room and our Steward was the best guy, efficient and fast and so nice. The 24-hour room service was awesome only used it once, but the food was great and hot, just as good if prepared right in front of you. The restaurants were so great, wonderful food, all of them. We were very impressed by the quality of the food, and that it was truly all included. On our other cruises the Restaurant's that you had to make reservations for, the optional ones, were more money. The entertainment not so sure about, as we were so tired from our excursions we just wanted to sauna, hot tub, and snow grotto which we did every day and it was wonderful! we did go to one concert and it was nice. The violin players were very nice also. The excursions wow, they were wonderful. I love History and every port there were the best things to do. The only problem was I wanted to do them all. We did do 5 tours that were the included tours and surprisingly they were very good. I figured they would not be so nice, as the ones you had to pay extra for, but they were just as nice. The places we went and saw and learned about, is indescribable almost. We walked where Apostle Paul waked, we saw history frozen in Pompeii, The Acropolis, The Roman Coliseum, and everything in between. We are still in Awe and feel so fortunate to have been able to do and see the things we did. One thing I would recommend is water on the busses. Everywhere we went it was so, so hot. To have a cooler full of water available during the excursions would have been wonderful. We ended up after a few days learning and grabbing two bottles on our way off the ship. However, that was long gone after about two hours. The service was very, very good we felt pampered the whole time. I had to watch myself sometimes because if I joked about oh, I would like this, or that, or something, the next thing I knew it would be in our room or handed to me. I asked for bottled water once at the bar to bring back to my room and after about 5 minutes I was handed two bottles of water. Then he apologized that it took so long. Stating "sorry it took so long I had to run down five decks to get it we don't stock that here", did I mention the service was outstanding. This cruise was we thought A "once in a lifetime cruise" to celebrate our anniversary, 31 years. However, we are already talking about where we have to go next on Viking. Viking has brought our Cruising expectations to a new level. Also, fun fact there is a little museum area that was on our ship telling about Eric the Red a very popular Viking in history, I happen to be related to him. My grandfather has traced our lineage back to him. So, I Told my husband Maybe Viking would give me a discount rate because of this.... My Uncle Eric....again History, History everywhere! We highly recommend Viking! Read Less

There were many factors on why we chose this cruise. Two of the main factors were that this was a fantastic itinerary that visited the Holy Land and secondly, this was an adult cruise ship that did not have a casino. Many of our expectations were surpassed. The crew were just fantastic! From the moment we boarded, we could tell that the crew just loved working for Viking. This positive attitude permeated throughout the entire ship. Special mention goes out to Vikesh from Manfredi's. He was very accommodating to all our requests. Even though we sometimes wanted dishes from different restaurants, Vikesh would go out of his way to make it happen. Towards the end of the cruise, my wife mentioned to Vikesh that although the food on the cruise was fantastic, she just felt like having some basic Indian curry. We didn't expect it but he came back 5 minutes later and told us that he had spoken to the chef and all had been arranged. The curry would be served for dinner in our suite at 8pm that evening. Vikesh did not just arrange it, he personally delivered it to our suite. Just outside our suite was the Explorers Lounge. We spent every evening there chatting with the bar staff. We especially enjoyed the company of Eriona, Cecy and Stoyam. They were just so witty and a really pleasure to be around. On one of the evenings on the cruise, the waters were rather rough and we were feeling a little seasick. Erin concocted her special anti seasick drink which really did make us feel a lot better. Yovitza and Matthew always made sure that our wine fridge was well stocked up with our favourite wines. Having said that, I must say that the entertainment was lacking. Especially the four young singers that really couldn't sing. They were screeching and were very off key. Thankfully our Cruise Director Heather sang so beautifully. Additionally, the sound system in the theatre wasn't great either. It lacked power and clarity and didn't do justice to Heather's immense talent. It would probably benefit from a tuneup from a really good sound engineer. We liked that there were always port talks that were given by highly qualified speakers. Shore excursions were also very well organised and guides were very professional. Buses were comfortable and were never filled to the brim. In fact, most of the time, the buses were only about half-full, which made it very comfortable. It also meant that the guides had quality time with us and that we never had to wait too long for anyone. Overall, it was a very positive experience. The only thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating was the rather poor entertainment. Read Less

I have been on different cruise lines but Viking Star and Viking Sky that I have experienced has offered a near perfect experience. The staff are very friendly and eager to please. They treat you like royalty no matter the time of the day. The food in all restaurants is excellent and the fine dining experience is out of this world. The intineries were very well organized and ship staff were always around stationed at airports, cruise terminals and other areas to ensure no passenger felt tense that he/she were headed in a wrong direction. In Haifa we were disappointed that no excursion was offered for entering the Baha’i Gardens. That is why I have rated this tour as near perfect but not fully there. If there was a reason that the Gardens was not offered ought to have been made known to the guests. But barring this small disappointment, we had a most glorious 14 days on one of the finest there is on the seas. Read Less

This was our first "ocean" cruise with Viking (we previously did a river cruise). This company REALLY knows how to take care of their guests. They ship was just the right size and so beautiful. Our room had plenty of space and they provided binoculars, umbrella, extra bedding when requested, free snacks and drinks...I could go on and on. We definitely will use them again. The included excursions were top notch. I believe we only paid for an extra excursion in St Petersburg. We loved the difference in the various ports...small, large urban, historic, party town, etc. Some guests had a bit of a hard time with all the uneven cobblestone, so be forewarned about the older towns. We did a LOT of walking in the ports and had no issues (all four of us in late 50s early 60s). We appreciated that we could watch all of the port talks in our cabin and did not have to attend in person. Read Less

We have loved the Viking River Cruises that we took in Russia and the rest or Europe and decided to see if the Ocean Cruises could come close; Viking sure came though in the ocean also. From roomy staterooms to fantastic meals, everything was just what we expected! All staterooms are for two people - NO extra beds (nope no kids). When we made our reservation, we put in for a DV-6 Guarantee because all of the Staterooms on the Viking Star were Balconies so what could go wrong. The worst cabin was looking great. Finally, a few weeks, well two months prior to sailing, we received our room assignment Stateroom 8000. I knew this had to be a mistake since it was a Penthouse Junior Suite, but it was correct. This suite includes a mini fridge stocked with mini booze and sodas, pus a welcome bottle of champagne. Laundry is free in this suite and there are washers and dryers available free for everyone. Meals were up to our expectations and The Table and Manfreid's were well worth the effort of going there. The Table serves a set menu with wine pairing (well worth getting the upgraded wines) and each course is and adventure. I dislike Lamb, but the way they served it was delicious. Manfreid's is an Italian themed dining experience, however, they also served the best, rib eye ever! One of the not to be missed events IMHO is the daily TEA. It is open to everyone so do it at least once. Just aft of the Explorer's Lounge on Deck 7 is Mamsen's, a "sandwich shop." If you consider Waffles, soups and wonderfully crafted sandwiches JUST a sandwich shop. We also purchased the Silver Spirits Package, For about $19.00 a day we received upgraded wines and all the drinks we wanted (or could handle). Look, a Bloody Marry, upgraded wine for lunch and dinner and a couple of cocktails at ships prices and we exceeded that every day easily. If you do not get the upgrades lunch and dinner still includes very good beers and wines plus sodas. Coffee and teas are available all the time. There are many opportunities to gather with other people n the ship and many wonderful included excursions. Additionally there are optional excursions at your expense. I very seldom smoke a cigar, but this is my only complaint, the smoking area on deck 8 is inadequate. It is small, crowded and in the sun at all daylight hours, so very uncomfortable. Internet was fairly good throughout the ship for me, others had a hard tiem it seems. I am not sure why some had a hard time. Read Less

My husband and i love viking we love traveling with them. This time we used the free airfare promotion and let me tell you not worth the free! Viking travel department needs to step it up. everyone we talked to was booked out of their local airport and not with that local airports hub airline. I live in salt lake city, delta is the hub airline, we were booked on american airlines. others on our ship experienced the same issue. So we were booked on a red eye flight, so after working all day, leaving work, packing and getting to the airport to catch a 12:15 am flight i was already awake more than 18 hours. We land in north carolina and have a 4 hour layover. then we board and have another flight into san juan. The pick up at the airport process was fine, we got to the ship and checked in easily and got to our room. The cabin was delightful, the first meal on the ship we made reservations for manfridi's italian, glad we did, it was the best meal of the cruise. it was so wonderful we made another reservation for another night. (Thanksgiving Dinner Night, since there was no real Thanksgiving meal on the ship) The liv spa was my favorite location on the ship, i loved the snow grotto and the nordic spa experience, i booked a massage with maria from norway and she was wonderful. It was very relaxing and the massage table is heated, and it moves up and down, it helps you get up off the bed like a hospital bed. It was so nice. the pool in the spa and the hot tub and sauna and steam room got plenty of use. but mostly i liked to go and get the affirmations every day. the star theater was nice but honestly i liked watching movies in bed with my husband at night alone. The laundry service was a huge plus to cruising, because i was able to pack a lot less and bring more souvenirs home. The laundry soap is automatically added to the machine for you, so you do not need to pack your own. The laundry room itself has a tv and a couch so you can sit and watch your clothes and a movie. The west indies explorer included tours were nice, but i was hoping for more walking tours and less bus tours. The only walking tour the entire time was old san juan. It was great, the workout is what i was hoping for. like the river boat cruises you get some walking and learning. but with ocean cruises you get tour guides and a bus and some of the tour guides were really hard to understand. the optional excursions were worth the money most of the time. El yunque rainforest drive, was beautiful. sea trek helmet diving, the water was murky and you could not see a lot of fishes, the advertisement showed a lot of fish.. It was kind of a let down the day we went. harrison's cave was awesome! st. Kitts scenic railway was an awesome tour. mix and match perfume class in st. Martin worth every penny, the butterfly farm, sad do not waste your money, the snorkel tour was also much better than the helmet dive. The snorkle at shipwreck and turtle cove was awesome in st. Thomas. the legendary kon tiki was not as advertised. Now onto getting off the ship... What a nightmare, you are relaxed and had a great cruise, let me start off with this... You had to get your luggage out in the hall at 10:00 the night before, your carryon luggage needed to have all the stuff you needed for the next morning. you get up at 6:00 then go battle for breakfast with everyone else because we all have to be off the boat no later than 9:30 am. the trip to the airport was fine, but they drop you off and leave you there, and if your flight is not taking off till 3:00 in the afternoon you were stuck at the ticket area waiting to check in for your flight for a minimum of 3 hours. Then when you can check in you have to go wait at your gate for another 4 or so hours. and you were lucky if they even had your flight booked. Several people still had their flights as "pending" when they got to the airport and viking customer service was not even open for 4 more hours after they were supposed to check in. So a lot of people had to purchase their own tickets to get home because viking travel department with the viking free air promotion royally screwed up. Talk about leaving a sour taste in someones mouth after a wonderful and relaxing cruise to deal with that. It was not fun. so if you book a viking cruise reconsider the free air! Read Less

WE chose this cruise for the destinations, to try the new Viking Ocean Cruises and to be with friends. The Viking Star is small by cruise ship standards, but very nicely appointed and stable. Food is generally good, but the Italian Restaurant was disappointing. Our deluxe stateroom was very nice and the bed was comfortable. Service was very good and staff was friendly. Some shore excursions spent too much time on a bus. The train ride to and from Berlin was poorly organized (we were separated from our friends) and accounted fro 5 hours of the excursion time. The destinations are very interesting and the guide for our bus on the Ultimate St Petersburg tour, "Helen" was terrific! The cruise was great and we would do it again, but we prefer the smaller, more intimate Viking River Cruises. There were no children on our Viking Homelands Cruise and that was a real plus! Read Less

My sister, 2 friends and I selected the cruise for the great destinations and liked that all the state rooms had balconies. I have been on 2 previous cruises and really enjoy the view of a river, sea and ocean as well as the shorelines. The Viking Sea was an absolutely amazing ship. The dining options, gourmet food, service staff and entertainment were great. The singers and dancers were extremely talented. The cruise director, Heather, was awesome and also extremely talented. We were disappointed that we had to embark in Tarragona as the information and confirmation regarding the bus transfer times was lacking. However once we embarked on the ship and were greeted with Champagne we were excited and thrilled with the quality and décor of the ship. The windows all around the ship were nice and allowed for some amazing views. All areas were well maintained and clean. We would have loved to have been able to book a massage for the day at sea however it was sold out. We really enjoyed the pool area and morning room service to enjoy breakfast on our balcony. We will book another Viking Cruise in the future. Read Less

From start to finish, this was the best cruise we've ever taken. The ship was extremely comfortable and spacious, with every detail being well-thought out. Our cabin was very roomy and extremely comfortable, and our cabin steward attended to our every wish. The meals were absolutely delicious and rivaled some of the best meals we've eaten in gourmet restaurants on land. The meals and wines accompanying them were specifically prepared with fresh local ingredients, featuring the cuisine of whatever country we were visiting at the moment. The onboard entertainment and enrichment lectures added immensely to the enjoyment of our cruise. The lectures on the history and geography of the areas we visited made our shore excursions so very much more enjoyable. And to top it all off, our cruise director, Heather Clancey, was not only extremely talented vocally, but her port talks were extremely enriching as well. We had such a wonderful time on this cruise that we have already booked a 29 day Viking cruise for 2018. Read Less

We had taken the Grand European river cruise with Viking and thought the quality of the vessel, the staff, the excursions, and food were such that we thought Viking would be the best for our ocean cruise. Although the cost initially appeared higher than other cruises lines, we compared what we got for the money with Viking versus other lines and stayed with Viking. I would suggest Viking make a bigger point of these, e.g. free excursions, free soft drink and snack refills in the room, no charge room service, no charges for upper scale restaurants, no casino, sushi bar (fantastic), home made ice cream, etc. The second most key issue for us with this particular Viking cruise was the inclusion of the stops in Turkey. Although I under stand and would have made the same decision as Viking to drop Turkey from the itinerary I would suggest that it be put back on the itinerary at the earliest appropriate point. Many of our fellow travels also had these same thoughts. Every thing on the Viking Sea was wonderful. The live music through-out the ship greatly contributed to a more relaxing time. The Beatles retro was WONDERFUL. I would suggest more comedy acts as entertainment. Other lines I had been on had the entire crew compete to do a talent show. We really enjoyed these and suggest Viking consider this. Due to flights and time on the bus we did not arrive at the Viking Sea until about 1630hrs--a real let down. Otherwise the embark and debarkations were very smooth and effortless. A massive thank you to the disembarkation and transfer staff that provided my wife help after she injured her knee (old recurring injury which Viking was not at any fault for). The excursions were by and large excellent. The only stop that was rather under-whelming was Corfu. If I had the money to travel more I would do this one again and stay on board to relax more and/or go out on my own. We really liked the ship for NOT having many of the activities for younger adults and children found on other vessels. As the cruise went on we found some service staff in the World Cafe would at times pass our table by and ask others if they would like a refill of a drink when we had been sitting a while and had nothing. We joked that we must smell bad. The spa (which costs extra on some lines) was a special retreat for us and made the trip that much more wonderful. We think the passengers in too large part may have been unaware of this wonderful facility. We talked with several that did not use the spa since it was thought they would be charged for its use. The library or libraries throughout the ship was another highlight for us and we made constant use of the exceedingly excellent book selection. Bottom line- a great ship, staff, activities, and excursions. We have and will continue to recommend Viking. Thank you to those that supported us for a wonderful cruise. Read Less

We had not been to Scandinavia or the Baltic states and were anxious to go to this area. Viking's ocean cruise there seemed to offer all the places we wanted to go with the luxury of not having to pack and unpack and sail from one location to another while we slept. It was the perfect choice. Loved everything about the trip. The Viking Star was a lovely ship and the staff/crew was outstanding in every way. We had done a Viking river cruise and loved it so that is one reason we chose Viking over other options. The shore excursions were numerous with many options in each location, sometimes hard to decide which one to take. The local guides provided great insight into the region. I wish we could have had more time in St. Petersburg, especially at the Hermitage. There was so much to see and not enough time and we had no control as to the areas we visited in the museum. We had good weather and only one day with rain, which did not hamper or tour or "dampen" the experience. The food was excellent and varied with a nice number of restaurants to chose from. We could chose to have fine dining and linger over the dinner table or we could do a buffet meal quickly to move on to our next activity. There was so many choices on board of things to do we never get to do them all. We were never board. The entertainment while on the Viking Star was outstanding with options varying from the concert pianist, string trio, the ship's band to the performers (singers and dancers). The Aba show was really fun and the digital set state of the art. The young performers were very talented and always put on a superb show. We are already planning out next trip with Viking Ocean and have talked to a number of friends about joining us. (we went with a group of 3 couples) Bravo Viking Star! Read Less

I picked this cruise because of the itinerary - the opportunity to visit a range of fabulous cities and fjord towns - on what was billed as a new, stylish and not too large cruise liner. I was not disappointed. The ship is the style of the show - like living for a fortnight in a 'boutique museum', a mix of the modern scandi and a wealth of historical detail. It had all the facilities you might need and all of a high quality, designed with function and beauty in mind. Cabins were well designed, comfortable and attractive and well maintained by the friendliest room service you could wish for. Similarly, the dining facilities and food were of a high quality, from the homely Mamsens with its jam and waffles to the highly innovative, taste bud tingling Chef's Table. And make sure you have a cocktail in the Explorer's Lounge whilst passing through the Stockholm archipelago, the fjords or whilst watching the sun go down - a recipe for a magical moment. The pool areas were attractive and well maintained and swimming in the infinity pool in sunshine in St Petersburg was one of the unexpected highlights of the journey. A free trip was included at each port - I only paid for extras in St Petersburg (Gold Room and Hermitage - well worth doing), the ballet in St Petersburg and the jazz cruise in Copenhagen (pricey but a wonderful evening out). After feeling very herded on the Helsinki trip (lots of ships in port and the city felt under strain) we decided to do most of the other ports on our own which enabled us to miss the groups and investigate things of particular interest to us. We did, however, participate in the free trip in Warnemunde (alternative to Berlin) and this turned out to be a lovely day with a brewery visit (beer at 9.30am!!), guided tour of an incredible cathedral and a boat trip with fabulous views - a surprising gem of a day and all included! The following 'extras' were lovely bonuses: the quality of the lectures delivered by the guest lecturers that were informative and helped you to build knowledge as your trip progressed; the music everywhere on the ship - of a high quality but not too loud or obtrusive; the laundrette (not exciting but making packing and dressing much easier!); the fabulous spa facility - no need to pay a penny to fully immerse yourself in the Nordic spa system and the facility is usually nearly empty; the shuttle bus service at all larger ports (if you're the sort of person who doesn't like large, herded groups then this is the service for you - free transport to the heart of your port, a good map with a note of pick up point and you're set up for a great day!). This is not a family cruise ship, it is not an all singing all dancing entertainment ship, it is not a dressing up and having your photo taken at every opportunity ship. Instead it is a relaxing, informative, safe environment from which to explore a fabulous range of ports in a style that suits you. My only gripe - there was only a minimal reduction on double occupancy rates for a single traveller! A better deal would be the icing on the cake! Read Less

We heard really great things about the service and amenities of Viking cruises and we were looking for an adult cruising experience. We were more interested in a cultural experience than an entertainment environment. Viking met every one of our expectations. The organization for travel and embarkment was smooth. The Viking Journal kept us updated on the necessary preparations for the trip and provided us with meaningful insight into each port. Our cabin was very comfortable, the food was outstanding, and the staff made our trip so relaxing. We enjoyed the variety of lectures which was very important to us and we looked forward to the daily port talks. The shore excursions were very well organized and planned and the tour guides were exceptional in their knowledge of each city. There was also an interesting variety of shore excursions. Friends had ask us to join them on this cruise and we thought it would be a dream come true to be able to see lands we never thought we would. Our ship was the Viking Star new to the Viking fleet and we were not disappointed. All crew members were so helpful and there to take care of all our needs sometimes before we knew we needed anything. The shore excursions were most enjoyable especially St. Petersburg and Tallinn. These tours were just like stepping back in time and everything we had hope they would be. We loved seeing the old churches and see the Viking long houses as well as the new modern places. Seems as though the world is a much smaller place that we thought as many ports had the very same thing as we do here in the USA. Would have preferred more time in Amsterdam or Helsinki. We have traveled with Viking and are looking forward to our ocean and river cruises we have booked for next year. The rooms and service were very nice. The restaurants were nice, but we didn't enjoy The Chef's Table as much as the other dining venues. The food was very good, but we felt rushed at The Chef's Table; it wasn't a very relaxing experience. The ship as I said was very nicely sized - we do not do the "monster" cruises. It was also very clean and all the staff was very attentive. Our most enjoyable shore excursions were Gdansk, Amsterdam, Stavanger, and Helsinki. Chose this cruise based on the itinerary- wanted to go to St. Petersburg. Also wanted a smaller ship. Embarkation is the easiest I have ever experienced.... The ship is gorgeous- Scandinavian design throughout, very elegant without being glitzy. The cabin was adequate, the bathroom was fantastic. My 6ft2" husband could stand up in the shower!! Plenty of storage space in the bathroom but not enough storage space in the cabin. The luggage fit under the bed. The closet was spacious with sufficient hangers. Complimentary mini bar in room- you can decide what type of soft drinks you want, replenished daily. Choices on the TV were limited but the TED Talks available were a great bonus. Could use more choices of movies, especially more current ones. Also, could use some music channels. Bed is heavenly.... Food is excellent. The menu at the dining room and buffet is almost the same on most nights. Fresh sushi every night. Manfredi's Italian restaurant is a must!!! Rivals any excellent Italian restaurant on land. The Chef's Table is excellent if you are a foodie and like to experiment. Included tours were basic, some good others not so. Viking provides transportation to and from the ship in most cities. Crew was fantastic= could not do enough for you. Would definitely sail with Viking Sea again!!! Read Less

We have done a number of river cruises with Viking but this was our first ocean cruise with this line. As always with Viking, the service was excellent. The staff was uniformly friendly and helpful. The cruise and excursions were well organized and varied. The ship is beautiful and sailed smoothly with minimal roughness even in a storm. We especially appreciated the small size of the passenger list - just 930 travelers max - and the focus of the group - adult English-speakers only. These combined to mean no long lines, no waits while information was repeated in different languages and a emphasis on cultural experiences: no gambling,no Las Vegas-style floor shows, or children. Port talks were very informative and the enrichment speakers were excellent and very enlightening. We enjoyed the choice of restaurants and were particularly impressed with the imaginative food preparation at the Chef's Table. The public spaces are lovely and varied. The spa is the real thing, with professional staff and a variety of services. Our cabin was comfortable with a small balcony. An extra was a bathroom with heated floors! Our only disappointment was that the post-cruise excursion from Bergen to Oslo by rail stayed an extra day in Bergen with the result of only a few hours in Oslo. Read Less

Previous excellent experience with Viking River cruise, new ship, inclusive cruising, comfortable luxury. Viking takes excellent care of its clients in my opinion. An example of this care was on an evening when we returned to the ship without having had a chance for dinner, and we were rather late for the standard dinner alternatives. Much to our surprise, a lovely light supper awaited us in our cabin upon our return. It is also wonderful to have a ship with only 930 guests total. You never felt crowded or lost in the shuffle. The spa was spectacular, many activities were available, and we especially enjoyed having an included tour in each port. We did participate in some extra events, but the included tours we attended were also excellent. Our tour in St. Petersburg of the Hermitage was the best and most complete museum tour I have ever encountered. Well worth the fee! The dining venues were delicious and, yes, we tried them all over the course of the cruise. My husband also appreciated that there were no "formal" nights, and we both appreciated the lack of a casino, art sales and children. Read Less

I am going to focus on the positives! This is a beautiful ship with an amazing crew many of whom seek to go the extra mile in trying to give you a great time! We had an amazing trip. It was our first sea cruise and we were not disappointed. All of the four restaurants are excellent and we eat 3/4 times int he evening in each. Even the buffet style World Cafe is great in the evening as it is quiet, spacious and has the best views on the ship! We particularly enjoyed the Chef's table and were able to enjoy 4 out of 5 of the menus offered when we were on board. The included wines repeat a bit over 2 weeks but we are not great drinkers so it dodon't bother us. We loved the entertainment programme and music which were outstanding but for us the enrichment lectures were rather highbrow...and I am no intellectual slouch at all! They seem to be enjoyed by the academically minded on board. So for the downsides...security was a bit of a shambles...with the scanning process quickly abandoned after a port or two due to inefficiency. My wife's bag was impounded as she had a picnic knife and it took us 2 hours to track it down after we had to go to Guest Services and initiate a search! Finally what must be imporved - excursions...we had a really poor experience before we went with changed excursion times ( which Viking put right under pressure) and one really bad excursion that I am still discussing with them ( awful guide and not as described) . It is a challenge to get 700 or so people off on an included excursion. Those disattisfied with their walking tour allocation learnt that groups could be gatecrashed on the quay leading to a loss of control! ( not a problem with coach trips though as tickets were tightly controlled). It is early days and I am sure Viking will sort all this out. Most of our excursions are fine but be ready for immobile people who cannot keep up with the most gentle walks! Enough of that...an amazing experience...we loved it and hope to be back on a Viking cruise ship in a year or two. Read Less

The finest ship on the water at that size (930 passengers) Best service from all personnel including management. Food was great and the buffet is probably the best on the ocean. Overall ship design and quality of interior public space could not be better.. NO CASINO was a welcome relief!! Free land tours at each port were well above expectations. Once onboard the ship, it was perfect. HOWEVER, it was necessary for my travel agent and I to contact the Los Angeles based ground service group several times before departure and our experiences there were with the WORST GROUND SERVICE GROUP OF ANY CRUISE LINE. We have traveled over 20 times on several lines and never have we seen such totally incompetent service. Nothing was correct, factual or relevant to the requests being made. Unfortunately, we plan on another Viking Ocean cruise and dread the interface with the Los Angeles ground service people. Read Less

this was our first cruise on Vikings ocean ships. The Star is a very beautiful ship. Cabins are roomy, bathrooms larger than most ocean ships we have been on. Entertainment excellent. Dining and food was excellent. Service in the World Café not so good. Tables not cleared so people ended up sitting at a dirty table until staff came around to clear and wipe it down. embarkation and disembarkation very efficient, best we have had on a ocean cruise. We had an outbreak of Norovirus and my self and husband were confined to our cabins for 2 days each. Doctors and nurses very considerate and tried to help us through this bad time. Cabin person very good at trying to keep everything clean. Because of this problem the ship had to adjust ports and delay sailing from Bordeaux France, we missed Greenwich and shortened time in London. We missed the included shore excursion to Paris because of our illness. We feel a lot of the reason we sailed with Viking Star was missed so that was the reason for not giving them an excellent rating. Viking promised to reimburse us for adjusted stops etc. and for our illness . We received a voucher for $250. each on our next cruise, which we feel was not enough and called customer service to register our complaint, they promised $500. each which we never received.. May not cruise again with Viking Read Less

My friend invited me to join her as she had paid 2 for 1 on her single cabin so I lucked out!!!! The Viking Star is like a first class hotel - the staff are very kind and helpful and the food is just unbelievable!!!! I made sure I took full advantage of all the port talks and lectures, the spa (including being snowed on, don't enter without shoes and definitely don't sit down or your tush could be frozen to the seat for ever!!!!) I loved the infinity pool and swam there regularly, often alone for some reason! We took several excursions and enjoyed them all - the canal jazz tour around Copenhagen was the only time I was sad to see the Viking Star - our excursion was not long enough! It was great fun! We did manage to book all our included excursions eventually but that was the only thing about the entire trip that caused some anxiety - how can included excursions be sold out? Luckily extra trips were added so we got to see St. Petersburg. It says somewhere that you need to purchase a Russian visa if you want to leave the ship unaccompanied. I think it should be in bigger print because I was about to book to go to the Hermitage on my own when someone at home warned me that it was a problem without a visa and they are expensive!!!!! I had the best time and met many lovely people. I had withdrawals from being able to log on to My Viking Journey. com when I got home but the photos and memories will remain with me forever. Thank you Viking Star - I really hope to see you again some day! Read Less

We chose this cruise for the destination and previous excellent cruises with Viking. It was far better than our very high expectations. The ship makes one feel like high royalty in every way. Beautiful furnishings and common areas. Gracious, highly trained, professional staff. Gourmet dining in lovely onboard restaurants. Wonderful entertainment to suit a variety of tastes. No punk, heavy-metal or CW, on one end of the culture spectrum. Fabulous, professional flute-violin-cello trio, an acoustic guitarist, & a classical pianist played several times daily; lightly attended. Lots of Broadway tunes & toned-down Vegas-style shows were packed with elderly, middlebrow cruisers. Great variety and quality of food & service worthy of fine NY or European restaurants. That said, probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the cruisers ate pizza, burgers, steak, fries & ice cream most of the time. Can't say enough good things about the destinations and activities offered. Read Viking's brochures, look at the TV ads, & fully expect it to be 2-3 times better! We're experienced Europe-travelers & heretofore France & Italy were our favorite countries. On the basis of this cruise & before/after stays in Stockholm & Oslo, we think Scandinavia & the Baltic are even better. We like to socialize & we met lots of exceptionally nice people on the cruise. Most of our shipmates were age 75-85+ with some in great shape, and a good many more with significant physical limitations, including wheelchairs & electric scooters. This really compromised shore excursions, on some of which it seemed most of the time was spent getting people on & off the bus, & on long & frequent bathroom stops. The cruise offered lovely onboard & off-ship classical music programs. Our shipmates' concert etiquette tended to be annoying & embarassing. Photography including flash. Video recording, and playback with sound, during a performance!!!! Arm-waving & loud talking. All in all, the cruise was just wonderful & we can't wait to go again! Read Less

I choose this cruise for two reasons, first because of Viking and secondly because of the trip itself. Th Viking sea is a five star ship with outstanding service. It is a beautiful ship. The cabins are comfortable and each room has a balcony. Each room has a small refrigerator that is restocked daily at no charge. It has candy, snacks and juices. There is coffee machine in your room as well. There is a small Laudermat on each floor for the guests to use. The furnishings are lovely Scandinavian pieces. Even the furniture in the grand hall are very nice. The grand hall is three levels where entertainment is provided each evening. There is also a bar for after dinner cocktails while you listen to the piano player, guitarist or string trio. There are also nightly talks given by the tour director. The restaurants are many and varied according to your taste whether it be Italian,a steak house and several others to try. The buffet is outstanding serving everything you could possibly want from a variety of soups, breads, fish, meats, vegetables, and desserts. They even have sushi available. And of course wine and beer are available at lunch and dinner. There's plenty to do on board from the exercise room, the spa, the snow grotto or go for a swim The staff are efficient and will see to your every need. And they do it with a smile. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was some of the tours that were included. Maybe some of the tours you pay for were better. The best tour guides were in Berlin, Norway and Poland. But here again it all depends on the tour guide not Viking. Maybe they could do better to include museums. Read Less
