Western Mediterranean Cruise, 12 nights. Traveling solo. Rome to Lisbon Shore excursions were very good. Guides knew their subject matter. Viking Sun staff needs to recognize and treat solo passengers the same as other passengers. Except for one experience, dining staff were negligent and offhand to me as a solo passenger. At one dinner I was literally taken to the last table in the dining room, past all the other empty tables (I was early). I asked what was wrong with those tables. I was told they were for "the other passengers". Obviously I did not take that table. And I won't be cruising with Viking again. Generally recommended Mediterranean ports, eastern and western: Rome - a great walkable city Florence - spend time in the museums Valencia - very pretty Greek Islands - any of them, all beautiful Istanbul - see the Blue Mosque Malaga - see the Moorish architecture Read Less

Friends were going. Like traveling by ship with all of the amenities. Disappointed that we were not able to see more of Barcelona. The docks were too far from the center of town. The ship was awesome. Viking really catered to the older adult. Food was fantastic. I am to 2 other cruises on the same size ship. We were docked at the downtown area and were able walk on and off the ship. I would have liked to see more of the cities, especially Barcelona. Dining was enjoyable. The breakfast and lunch buffets were great and the dinner dining room and staff were awesome. The dining hour was a plus for seniors. The shows were fantastic - of the times. Movies could get a little uncomfortable after an hour. Especially enjoyed tea time. Flights were booked with no long waits for connecting flights. I am considering a river cruise in the near future. We selected this cruise for Vikings reputation and our desire to explore the Western Mediterranean. From the moment we stepped on board we were treated with great curtesy and everyone was so helpful. Our cabin was well appointed and so comfortable with wonderful views. The entertainment was so enthusiastic and fun to watch. We looked forward to every opportunity to attend a performance. We enjoyed the crew interacting with the passengers. Everyone we met had only positive praise for the ship and it's qualities. The comfort was everywhere. Each port held an adventure that we will remember for a very long time. We had so much fun at Torre A Cenaia winery and farm on our Florence stop. We made delicious foccacia bread and biscotti which we consumed with free flowing wine. This is a must do adventure. We felt like we were part of Tuscany and not just a tourist. We would recommend this trip for anyone who wants to feel relaxed and spoiled. Every meal was delicious and we had an unforgettable anniversary dinner at the chef's table with a special anniversary cake. Thank you Viking! Read Less

We loved the ambience of the ship - light Danish wood, great excursions, excellent service, great food ( esp. in the main dining area - awesome buffet)! Specialty dining rooms were ok but service not quite as top notch. We also liked the spa - good pools, hot, cold, and rippling, rooms were spacious as was bathroom. Loved heated floors. Washer/dryer facilities good too. The “included beers and wines” were more than adequate and the staff made you feel special no matter what you drank. Algeria was amazing bee took 2 tours with tour leaders from different generations. Thus we got 2 different perspectives on the government, etc. We did the 2 day Rome addition. Viking concierge based at the hotel was great and actually chased after us to make sure the restaurant she rec. would seat us!! We are sailing with Viking again 6/19 on new ship Jupiter to Norway! We chose this cruise for the itinerary and reputation of the cruise line. Once we landed in Rome everything was flawless. However, dealing with Viking in the U.S. was very frustrating. We had originally booked a cruise to Cuba and cancelled it after they made several port changes. We wanted to use the "cancel for any reason" Viking insurance to cover some of the cost of this trip. It took 4 months to get the voucher approved, submitted and our money refunded, only after my agent did a manual override. The insurance is expensive and worthless. We were also given no information about the post cruise as it wasn't available so we booked our own tour in Barcelona. We were told in the U.S. that the shore team would transport our luggage to the hotel so we could go on our excursion. NOT TRUE! Once onboard we were given no help with this and told we would need to arrange for and pay to have our bags shipped once we docked and get ourselves to Barcelona. Since we paid for transfers and were told stateside it wouldn't be a problem that hardly seemed fair and not consistent with their image of customer service. Finally, Viking Air....it is very hit and miss. Our airlines changed our connecting flights and I had to fight with Viking to arrange another way to fly since it was clear I would miss our connection. When we finally got the flights arranged and I checked a day before we were to leave our seats had disappeared on one portion of the flight. I finally called the airlines myself to fix it. Some of the Viking Air people are helpful and others misinformed and indifferent. Again, it was the most amazing cruise ever (room, service, food, ports, embarkation), and the ship experience was flawless. Regarding the whole arrangement experience I have had much better and less stressful experiences on Holland America and Carnival. Read Less

We have travel on many Viking Cruises both river and ocean. This was an itinerary that my wife and I thought was very interesting and it was that. Viking cruises gave always been exceptional in every way possible, room comfort, food , excursions and cultural entertainment. We have found that Viking has the comfort of their guests foremost in their operation and this was displayed by the change in the itinerary due to hurricane that was heading to the same area of England as the ship. During this cruise I was struck by an attack of Bells Palsy. The ships doctor and staff were very good and arranged for me and my wife to be picked up at our next stop for transport to a local hospital and after treatment there brought back to the ship. We can not say enough good things about the crew and their concern for passengers.. Read Less

We have traveled on Viking Ocean cruises and Viking River cruises and they never cease to amaze us of how they can be so consistently well run. The cabins are always well maintained, spacious and comfortable. The onboard staff are terrific, they meet you once and they remember your name for the whole cruise and we even met some that remembered us from a previous cruise that remember our name. The airline lost my wife's luggage and it kept going back and forth from Amsterdam to Bergen, like four times until it finally caught up with us in Amsterdam on day four. The staff was very helpful, they did her laundry for free every night and some offered her the use of some of their cloths. The food is exceptional, plentiful and served correctly. We like the World Café for breakfast where there is a huge selection of traditional and ethnic food available. Another plus is the free wine with lunch and dinner. Most of the people on all of the Viking cruises are older but that does not mean less active. No kids on board is a plus. Embarkation and disembarkation are handled very well. I could go on and on of how we love Viking but I guess you get the idea. Read Less

This was our second trip on the Viking Star having been on the Baltic Cruise in July 2015. The ship was very well taken care of. It was like a five star hotel with amenities and tours included at every port. The tours introduced you to the port and took you all around to the sights by foot or on buses. The cabins are very roomy with full size closets, bathroom with heated floors, a large flat screen tv on which they had TED talks and the workshops given on the ship. They are decorated quite nicely. The bedding is excellent and each room has a nice balcony with two comfortable chairs and a table where you can have a meal and enjoy the views. The food is excellent, like the finest restaurants. Plus 24 hour Room Service. They offer a full schedule of events each day and a wonderful tea time. All around the ship are musical presentations. The piano player was superb. In addition the entertainment crew were excellent and performed on many nights in various venues. This is not a ship for children. It does not have a casino but we didnt miss it at all. It is just what a retired couple enjoys, peaceful days and evenings, relaxing shows, great niteclub entertainment and of course some quality shoppes. Everyone on the ship was accommodating. The steward was excellent and a big help to meet our needs. As I said this was our second trip and we are already registered for a cruise to Alaska and looking forward to it. The transfer to the airport was very smooth. Our luggage was handled for us. Read Less

Highly recommend Viking Ocean. Excellent cruise, service, deluxe cabin is set up very nicely - plenty of storage. Bathroom is very nice- heated floors, plenty of storage space. Our cabin was kept very cleaned - serviced twice a day. Always had plenty of ice. The main dinning room and World Café are very good. Our favorite is Manfredi's. Excellent. Least favorite and should replace is the Chef Table. Shore Excursions were very good. The included are nice, we did the optional tour to Windsor Castle and Monet Gardens -- the guides were excellent. Did our own private tour in Cherbourg to the American Sector. We suggested on the review that they give us more time in Portugal and skip the A Coruna port as well as they could skip Haugesund, Norway - not much to see and the shops all closed on Saturday at 4:00 pm and we did not dock until 1:45 pm and with tour no time to shop. What is great about Viking Ocean is it is geared for adults - not children. Very relaxing - pool area is great, options for entertainment. If you go don't miss the Rat Pack and Cabaret in the Torshavn lounge. What is great about Viking is you can do their tours or your own, they don't hassle you about getting off the ship - they supply free transportation getting into the city and back to the ship. You can drink your own wine at dinner without a corkage fee. They are very service oriented, friendly and provide an excellent cruise experience. Wonderful lounges. Read Less

We had sailed on Viking Rhine River cruise and loved it and were intrigued by the ads for the Viking Ocean itineraries. The ship was fabulous, it was truly the nicest ship we had ever sailed . It was wonderful.Food was excellent, although the Chef Table could use a better ways of serving...we felt very rushed, as our wine glasses kept adding up on our table, while we were eating. A restaurant fashioned like this needed to slow down between courses. But my biggest complaint was the lack of time in each port.We would have been better off having on or two less ports, and spending longer days or more overnights in the others. In our itinerary, if we didn't go to Coruna, which basically a waste, we could have spent more time in Portugal. We whisked around Lisbon and Porto so fast, that I hardly remember half of what we saw. But overall, it was otherwise a wonderful voyage and we are already booked for your Turquoise Caribbean cruise out of Miami in December Looking forward to it, and anxiously awaiting your newest itineraries for 2019. Hope there are some new choices.. Read Less

Good cruise, great food and wonderful cabin. A few of the included tours didn't meet the standards for the rest of the cruise. Especially in Porto, the tour guide did not need the level of the tour guides in other cities. Had a great time in Paris, the tour guide was very knowledgeable. Food on the shop was was great! The spa was very comforting as well. This is our second Viking Ocean Cruise and I rate them very highly. Suburb quality. Met several wonderful people in the wait staff. Going off season was not a disadvantage. We dressed accordingly and had a wonderful visit. Actually much better than in season when the temperature is much hotter. I love Barcelona! All of the sightseeing is great there. I'm a fan of Gaudi. He's absolutely fantastic. What a great mind! Service in the restaurant is fabulous, the quality of the food in restaurant is suburb. Had heard many good things about Viking and they did not disappoint. The staff was outstanding, the food was excellent and the cabin was roomy and immaculately clean. The itinerary of the Mediterranean cruise was a match to places we wanted to visit. A couple of the shore excursions were a little weak and the concierge staff on board did not always seem to be well informed about alternative options. However, everything else about the cruise was first class.Dining options were excellent and all were very good. A variety of entertainment options were available each night and some were very good. The design of the ship made you feel like you had plenty of space and were never crowded. We loved have a balcony with our room and spent many enjoyable hours watching the scenery while we enjoyed beverages. The Explorer Lounge was another favorite spot. Would highly recommend Viking to anyone considering a cruise. Read Less

We chose Viking because they had the best Med stops as well as the level of luxury and service. Viking is a top notch company. We have been so pleased with the river cruises so we gave their ocean cruise a try. Wonderful overall experience!!! Having done over 15 ocean cruises this was by far the best! We loved the size of the ship. We never felt like a number at all, in fact the staff knew us and would often greet us by name! The embarkation was effortless. The bar service wonderful. The shore excursions were all really good and they allowed us to change one of our excursions due to an injured ankle in our party. The dining options were spectacular! The buffet was over the top good! Fresh sushi every night! Our stateroom was like being in the lap of luxury! The disembarkation was easy and we didn't have to wait in any long lines, that is very rare! We would defiantly cruise with Viking Ocean Cruises again! Read Less

Our room was fabulous and the view from our veranda was great. The shore excursions were very interesting. We had never been to the Mediterranean so we got to see things and people that lived there. The food on shore was okay but of course we were spoiled with the food on the ship. We had a stop in Madrid before our initial cruise and it was great. The hotel there was fabulous. and the trip to Barcelona on the fast train was fun..and fast! Read Less

Everything was perfect! I have visited Barcelona in the past but not recently. I wish we had had more time there since there is so much to see. We'll have to return again to stay a while. The Viking Sky is an impressive vessel. I enjoyed it much more than Royal Caribbean's monsters. By having several dining venues, we tried them all to our advantage. The meals were tasty, filling, and the additional advantage of having a beer or glass of wine was similar to that we have encountered on the Viking River Cruises. Actually, I wish Viking would have add river cruises in North America. There are two American companies of which I am aware, but I would prefer to go with Viking if this becomes a reality. We couldn't get into one port, so we took a bus to Monte Carlo, which I like very much and my husband had never visited. We entered the Casino and had lunch at the Cafe de Monte Carlo to the Casino's left. Since it was my husband's first visit to Monte Carlo, he wanted to spurge. We order 6 escargots each and a glass of wine for the grand total of almost $35.00. Read Less

A Critique of the Ship Viking Sea : I and my wife were recently on this ship for a cruise from Rome to Barcelona via Tunis and Algiers. The cabin space and the balcony size were adequate, but not enough drawer or shelf space. The desk had a lid which lifts up to access the drawer but became a nuisance because it lessened desktop space. There was no sofa bed. The TV had good quality, and the controls, and software were good. They have an app for the iphone for you to look up daily events, schedules and bookings, which was really a nice feature. They have Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC, but no CNN. However no TV whilst in port at Tunis. The Bathrooms and Showers were good and spacious. But no second set of towels. The Sink is square and shallow, has a flat bottom, so shaving cream does not drain out. The Drinking Water was free and plenty in the cabin, both bottled and in a large container. The Refrigerated Soft Drinks were also free and plenty and renewed daily. The Architecture was all straight lines or rectangles, with hardly any curves or rounds. The Design was all Scandinavian with simple bland pastel colors. Everything is square cornered: on the sink, table light, wall light, handles, faucets, shower head, etc. There was no Casino on board. Games such as bridge or chess had to be played in open spaces. There was no closed private room, and it was Impossible to play Mah-Jong. The maximum Capacity was 900. There were 850 passengers, with no kids. The Service was good with one service personnel for every two passengers which was really appreciated in the dining room. The Wine was free at lunch and dinner, and of good quality, with endless refills, like on their river cruises. Good only for wine lovers. The Food was generally good, similar to Oceania and Crystal, but the choice is less. The World Café is a clean lengthy cafeteria, one on each side of the ship, with the kitchen in the center of the ship between the two sides. They appear identical, but on closer look, the 2 sides serve different items, e.g. Ice creams, seafood, and sushi, only on one side, which you might miss if don’t visit the other side. However, the Sushi is very fresh and good, all the time. Like ice-cream, only on one side The Specialty Restaurants were difficult to book, but there were plenty of vacant tables, which were wasted, so their booking system needs to be improved. The Manfredi’s, - an Italian Restaurant, was quite good, almost as good as on Crystal’s. You could have all the following items for hors d'oeuvres, if you want: mussels, fried calamari, crab cakes, pate de foie gras, and escargot. The Chef’s Table – another specialty restaurant, was a joke. It is designed to promote Scandinavian cooking, and although they offer a different menu every 2 days, the flavor is just too bland. Can you imagine, the high-light on their menu was the Poached Salmon! After we tasted the main course, we walked out, and then ate again at the World Café whose average daily menu was much better. The owners would be well advised to convert this restaurant into French or Asian. The City Tours – were free and very well organized, similar to their River Cruises, usually 3 to 4 hours in the mornings, which was enough. For 800+ passengers, I counted 29 buses lined up at the quay side. The takeoff was staggered, and was quite a sight. In the city tours of Malta, Caglieri, Tunis and Algers - really nothing much to see. The worst experience was in Caglieri – where there was only one bathroom for 4 bus loads of passengers, which took over an hour. The Ship – has only 8 floors. The Pool has a roof that is openable. The Elevators take only 8 persons with comfort, not 14 as noted. All the office areas, computer stations, shops, and bridge and chess areas - are open on the corridor side with no privacy. They are open spaces, not rooms. The Dining Rooms were clean and bright, but no lunch is provided there. There were only 2 Shops, so you could not spend any money. They give no on-board credit, because their basic price was fairly low. They do not offer any Foreign Exchange so you must bring all the cash in Euros you might need. The Shows and Entertainment – were good on average, but not spectacular, with only 6 dancers and 2 singers who perform every other day. Life Jackets – are not stored inside the cabins. Peter Fan. Ship was outstanding, expecially the Nordic spa! Great selection and quality of food throughout the day. Wonderful common areas in different areas of the ship. We appreciated the low-key noise level on the ship. Food on the ship was delightful! Lovely fruit, custom omelettes and egg dishes for breakfast. Nice variety for lunch. Dinner was amazing! The self-serve area included crab, shrimp and sushi every night! Fantastic original dining in the specialty restaurants, at no extra charge (unlike other cruise lines). We loved our visit to Malta! Great guide, incredible sites to see. We had an interesting and informative excursion in Sardinia on the included tour. The Tunisians welcomed us after a few years without cruise visitors. The tour was a little rough, but we saw and learned a lot! We loved our time and tour of Valencia! Great food and sights, and a very informative guide. Very easy disembarkment. We chose this cruise because it was going to both Tunis and Algiers, ports we have always wanted to go to. The offshore excursions were wonderful. Viking made sure that everything went smoothly. Malta and Sardinia were fascinating as well, and the guided tours were very professionally done. There was always enough personnel to adjust our daily itineraries if we chose to do so. The lectures on board regarding the destination ports were extremely helpful. Just a piece of advice. Change your dollars to Euros before you board the ship because there is no way to change currency on board. We would have loved to make more purchases in Tunis and Algiers, but we did not have enough Euros. The food in the restaurants on board was excellent and there were so many choices of where to dine all day. The service by everyone was high caliber. We look forward to our next Viking journey. We chose the cruise so that we could meet up with friends from Maryland who we had met on a previous Viking River Cruise. Originally we were going to sail on the 15th January but the British Government advised not to go to North Africa, Viking contracted us to cancel and so we changed to a week earlier for the cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Viking were extremely helpful with the change and even booked us in Club Class for the journey out and also gave us a cabin upgrade. The journey and transfer to the ship all went well and our cabin was up to the high standard we expect from Viking with plenty of room and all the facilities you would expect from a 5 star hotel. Facilities on the ship were very good and one of the most noticeable things was that it was never crowded. There always seemed to be seats for entertainment or relaxing for a pre-dinner drink. Food on the ship was also of a high standard, of course accompanied by wines or beers and service in the restaurants very good. We tried all dining options during our trip and were not disappointed. Overall the crew on the ship were very friendly. Entertainment on the ship was enjoyable and of a high standard and shore excursions were good and well planned. We were late docking in Rome due to bad weather but Viking rearranged the included shore tours with very little notice although some extra tours had to be cancelled and reimbursed. Disembarkation was well organised and went without a hitch. In hindsight, our change to the earlier week was a good move as the weather the following week was not very good causing delays getting into port but I guess this is something to be expected when cruising during the winter. I had never been on a Ocean cruise. More than that, I did not want to go on a Ocean cruise. You see, I get seasick. Not just "seasick" but "stay in the cabin in misery" seasick. But I had been on many of Viking's river cruises and I know them to be first class. And, my wife wanted to go on a cruise. So I said O.K. if I'm going, it's going to be good, someplace that I've never been. Barcelona, I've never been there. So we booked the 7 day Romantic Mediterranean, now called the Iconic Western Mediterranean. Barcelona to Rome. I can tell you that it was as easy as it gets. The flights that Viking arranged were perfect and the transportation to the ship was smooth and easy. The ship, the Viking Sea was far better than I had imagined in all respects from the food, cabin, dining and entertainment. Shore excursions were well thought out and planned with ample free time to explore on our own. The service was excellent from the wait staff, couldn't be any better. The food was very diverse and of excellent quality. Reservations at the specialty restaurants were easy and the food was great. We were there for "Lobster Night" which I understand is the second night of your cruise. Watched a movie, listened to the band and watched the Ocean go by. All in all a very pleasant experience. My cabin DV5 - Perfect! We had book a Veranda which was a lower class and Viking upgraded us prior to sailing. I've booked the next one already and by the way, I didn't get seasick! Read Less

Originally, we planned this cruise to complete the circle of the Mediterranean following our earlier cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Sadly, mechanical issues resulted in our cruise going from Barcelona, almost to Toulon, France, and then back to Barcelona for 12 days. We were offered the opportunity to remain on board with access to free shore excursions, free shuttles to and from the city, and of course, all the services of the ship. What could have been a huge disappointment turned into one of our best travel experiences. We explored Barcelona and the surrounding area with gusto. The staff and crew were nothing short of amazing, never letting us feel mistreated. There were unexpected financial considerations made as well, so in all, we felt not cheated, but rewarded. Viking Ocean is certainly our first choice for future cruises (we have in fact already booked another), and we anticipate more, positive experiences. We did not partake of the on-board entertainment, with one exception, but anecdotal feedback from other cruisers indicated a great deal of success. The exception was the staff bringing a flamenco experience on board for our viewing pleasure, and they were a total delight! Hotel was Hilton Athens and facilities and food were excellent. Planned tours were informative and excellent choices. Ship facilities were excellent and food was excellent with many options. Room was excellent and well maintained by staff during the cruise. We participated in many of the port tours during the cruise. All of these were informative and well run with plenty of time for each activity. We would go again on other Viking cruises.
