We recently did the 12 day cruise from Norway to Iceland on the Viking Sky. We usually cruise with Regent so we curious to see how the Viking Ocean Cruises compared to Regent. Everything about this cruise exceeded our expectations and in fact, we booked another Viking cruise while on the ship. Ship - Everything is clean from the decor to the housekeeping. Everything sparkles! Service - Beyond incredible. Everyone from the housekeeping staff (who always remembered our names from day 1) to the restaurant staff and coffee bar. There was never more than 30 seconds in the buffet, when someone did not ask if we needed anything or were cleaning up dishes. They all had a smile on their faces and really seemed like they enjoyed their jobs. Food - Buffet - first, we usually avoid buffets, but after eating at the Viking Sky's buffet the first time, we were regulars for breakfast and the occasional dinner. The food was amazing. Fresh and hot...always. Restaurant - Again, outstanding food. Wish they had a little more poultry options, but still great. Manifredi's Italian - Not sure how we will ever eat Italian at home again. This was by far the best Italian food that we have ever had. The bread is delicious. We did not try the other restaurants. Room - We stayed in 4104 which was just towards the aft. We loved the location of our room. It was quiet and always one of the first to be made up. Everything was perfect in the room, though a bit tight. Two people cannot pass each other around the bed. The bathroom was perfection, especially the no fog mirrors and heated floor. The bed was very comfortable. The storage space was perfect for a 12 day cruise. We had plenty of room to store all of our things in the room and bathroom. Entertainment - We loved it. Cute shows with great singers. We were never bored. Over and above - this is where we were most impressed. - Our flight home was very late in the day. Viking did not kick us off the ship. Instead, they arranged for a late departure from the ship and then transported us to the city center. They arranged for our luggage to be stored while they provided us with a nice lunch at the opera house and time to walk around the city. Then they transported us to the airport. It didn't stop there. They escorted us into the airport with our luggage until we checked in! Wow! We cannot wait for our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We have not been to Scandinavia or the Baltic countries so we really enjoyed the cruise and the ports of call. We ate in the Restaurant most nights where they had a good selection of dishes including a featured destination selection. We also ate at Manfredi’s two nights and throughly enjoyed the experience. We did not spend a lot of time in our room, but found it to be very comfortable. My wife especially liked the heated floor in the bathroom. We found the staff to be especially competent and it was amazing how quickly they got to know you by name. The common areas were conducive to sitting and talking or playing a game and there was almost always some type of entertainment going on. The included excursions provided a good insight into the ports of call and there was a good selection of optional excursions if you wanted additional experiences. Read Less

Our cruise was beyond our expectations. The ship beautiful, the food outstanding and the staff couldn't have been more attentive. Be sure to try the specialty restaurants. The Chef's Table which had a different menu every night and Manfredi's which had an extensive menu. Both were amazing! The other more casual restaurants had a huge selection of food with different selections added every day. Everything was delicious! We took advantage of High Tea every afternoon at 4 pm. The scones were the best I've ever had. There's a covered pool that allows you to swim in the coldest climates and a snow cave to enjoy after the sauna. Our stateroom was comfortable and had a beautiful bathroom with radiant heat. The TV had a huge selection of movies, TV series, and documentaries. If you leave the webcam on at night and there is a northern lights sighting, they will announce it in your cabin. We ran out on the deck at 3 am to catch a glimpse! There were many activities to keep you busy and there was entertainment in the evening along with music in the atrium. The excursions were informative and fun. We went to a Sami Camp, learned about their culture, went reindeer sleigh riding and had dinner in their teepee. I would definitely take another Viking Cruise and encourage everyone to do the same! This was a really enjoyable different kind of itinerary and our first experience with Viking. We came in with high expectations for the ship and crew and it was met in every way. Also, we really enjoy this size ship. We never felt crowded or experienced lines. Our cabin was modern, comfortable and provided ample storage space. The bathroom was great with a heated floor, plenty of counter space and a very comfortable shower. The TV entertainment system was great and comprehensive including tons of free movies and TV shows, enrichment programs, music and even TED talks (I can get behind a company smart enough to feature TED talks). There was also a good variety of live channels inc, using several US news stations. At times the live TV was unavailable. The free internet was limited to one device at a time per passenger which is frustrating but a smart policy. It did not work so well in some locations but was generally fine for email and reading news. Our cabin was cleaned twice a day and our room steward managed to do so without us ever hardly seeing him. The service level was as good or better then any of the dozen or so cruises I have previously taken with both mass market and luxury lines. The food ranged from very good to great. I really appreciated the fact that Viking provides an experience that is mostly inclusive and enjoyed that pretty much everything was part of the base experience. The ports we visited were all pretty interesting. We really loved our starting port, Bergen, and we recommend spending at least a few days in Oslo, where we flew into, which is not part of the cruise itinerary. If you do go to Oslo, the 7 hour train ride from there to Bergen was very enjoyable. My one complaint regarding the ports is the time in Stavanger was just 7 hours which seemed very short. We took all the included Panoramic tours and found them all worthwhile. The one optional Viking tour we took was in Alta and including snowmobiling and the Igloo Hotel. This was very well organized and was a highlight of our trip. Finally, I must note the embarkation and disembarkation. They were incredibly smooth and there was none of the usual chaos getting off the ship. I never felt crowded at all. We used Viking to transfer to the airport for our departure flights and it was great. We were not too lucky with weather or the the Northern Lights, but this did not lessen our enjoyment of this cruise. We loved it! Read Less

We chose this itinerary because I wanted to travel somewhere to see the Northern Lights. This was our third Viking Ocean cruise and we received the excellent service we have come to expect from Viking. We have our fourth already booked for August 2019. Our trip to Bergen to embark was interesting due to the snowstorm at the Bergen airport when we arrived, but KLM did a fine job, diverted us to Oslo to refuel and then back to Bergen. The Viking representatives were still waiting for us at the airport when we got there and we were quickly delivered to the ship. Embarkation was a snap and within 15 minutes of arriving at the ship we were in our stateroom, our luggage arrived about 30 minutes later. We booked a Penthouse Veranda, 5014, and were very happy with the room size and storage. The closet had plenty of room for all our hanging clothes and there were 10 drawers available for other clothes. Each night stand has two USB port, a US outlet, and an European outlet so there is plenty of support to keep your devices charged. We especially like the Chef's Table specialty restaurant. it is a set menu of a 5 Course meal and each course has it's own wine that changed every three days. Small individual portions, but plenty of food for us by the time the meal is over. We like the Asian Panorama and Xiang. When we don't eat at the Chef's Table, We eat our evening meal in the Restaurant where you get several choices of local food or their "always available" (food for picky eaters) menu for a three course meal. The first thing all the waiters asked was if we had any food allergies. Beer and wine are always included in meals, you can upgrade your wine selection with the Silver Beverage Package. The World Cafe is the buffet style restaurant and seems to have almost everything available that is on the Restaurant Menu and again beer and wine are included with the meal. Be sure to check out Mamsen's on deck 7 for a quick sandwich and some really good soups. All dining venues are included. There is always some sort of live music in the Explorers Lounge or the Viking Living Room. This cruise had a guitarist, pianist, and string duet. The Band playing in the Torshavn was outstanding. Viking provides enrichment lectures that cover local history and culture on all their cruises. This cruise had lectures on the Northern Lights and other astronomical occurrences. The service we received from our room steward and the wait staff was outstanding. Two of the bartenders and several of the waiters were on previous Viking Cruises that we were on and remembered us. One thing everyone that booked this cruise should have remembered was that it was January/February in Norway. It is going to be cold and dark. Take warm clothes. I heard some of the passengers complained about the dark. The cold made the Pool area cold, it is a glass enclosed space and when it is 5F outside it is going to be cold inside. Our room was comfortable and I was usually comfortable in my shirt sleeves anywhere other than the pool area and we live in Florida. We hit all the ports on the itinerary except Bodo. The weather forecast at Bodo was 30 F, with 35 MPH winds. I think the captain made a good decision in not stopping in a non sheltered port. The excursions would have been miserable. The other ports were interesting and informative (and cold). The Thermal Spa was a great place to go after an excursion out in the cold. There is a large warm pool, a hot tub, snow grotto, and steam room in the coed part with lounge chairs. There is a Sauna and Cold Plunge in each locker room. This is included and there are robes and towels available in the locker rooms, all you need is your key card to lock and unlock the lockers. The Silver Beverage Package (SBP) is worth a look. At $19.95 a day per person you only need to have three cocktails/beers/glasses of wine to pay for it. It covers everything they have on the bar. We are considering going on this itinerary again, just in the summer for the midnight sun. Read Less

My wife has had seeing the Northern Lights as a "Bucket List" item for many years. When Viking Ocean came out with the "In Search of the Northern Lights" cruise I knew it was a must to do. In quick summary, We saw the lights and they were spectacular and the ship/food/crew exceeded our expectations. And yes it was cold. My wife and I are fairly seasoned cruise passengers the last ten years and usually cruise Celebrity "Aqua Class" or Princess "Club" class and find that level of service excellent on those ships. We have travelled Azamara and thought it was even better but it is expensive. This was first time on Viking and I have to say it was excellent with much the same feel and quality of Azamara but newer. Pricing is much like Oceana and Azamara. We were scheduled to pick the ship up in Bergen in late January. We were worried about flight delays so arranged to arrive in Bergen a few days before departure. We stayed at Opus IV and it was great. I would highly recommend it as the it is relative new and in a A-1 location for exploring Bergen. It has a great breakfast Buffet with friendly helpful management. Boarded the ship and headed North. We were in a "D-2" cabin which well laid out with a nice bathroom (Heated floors a definite plus for this trip). The food on the ship was great and varied. Great fish as you would expect being in Norway but the beef was also exceptional. Nicely seasoned and tender for the various cuts. The "Grill" served the best burgers I have ever had at sea. Fresh ground beef or if you wanted, Bison or Turkey or Veggie burgers were avail along with great Hot Dogs or BBQ. All fresh and prepared to order. Several nights they had a seafood buffet on the pool deck with shrimp, crab legs, lagotisnos etc - all you can eat - no charge. Their afternoon tea included besides the 3-tiered platter of goodies, fresh scones and clotted cream....Yum! Most cruises have a "Lobster Night" and serve what I call a Fla Lobster Tail. Always tasty. On Viking they served full Maine Baked Stuffed lobsters or Lobster Thermador. Surf and turf was a highlight not once but twice. So as you can see the food was good. At least on this ship, Viking Sky, everyone was friendly, has a smile and was willing to chat and help in anyway. Most cruises have one or two staff that stands out but on this ship it was almost everyone without exception. As an example, my wife is allergic to gluten. I would say most ships as well as Viking handle this well. In Viking's case, they had a Sr. Officer assigned to those passengers with food needs. He was always present insuring my wife was taken care of and would bring special chief creations that made the trip special for her. We sailed North of the Arctic circle and had, for Mid-January, pretty good weather. No real storms, cold weather (Think zero) and some snow. The two cities on the itinerary that had the highest probability to see the lights was Alta and Tromso. Alta was first but no luck. Tromso was a winner with great lights both nights we were there. Other excursion highlights were snow mobile (Heated handle bars a must), dog sledding (a little scary but terrific) and seeing the Ice Hotel (Amazing). I can't say enough about the cruise as it was very unique and certainly not your average Caribbean cruise. Viking certainly had its act together on this one which means we will definitely use them again. Read Less

The Northern Lights have always been on our bucket list so when Viking offered the cruise we jumped on it. The cruise lived up to all our expectations and more. We were in PV 6085 which was very comfortable and spacious. Loved the heated bathroom floors! Our cabin steward Fernando was always one step ahead in meeting our needs. My husband had a head cold and he added a box of tissue by the bed. He always kept our ice bucket fresh. All the staff was very pleasant and helpful. The Captain was always out and about greeting guest. At a question answer session with the Captain and a few officers he was asked about how he kept the crew in such high spirits. He felt it was the free internet that allowed them contact with their families. I did not meet a staff member that did not seem happy. The food on board the Sky exceeded our expectations. Judi which was over excursions was a pleasure to work with and went above and beyond to help. I had booked a ski trip for my husband in Narvik that was canceled because of lack of interest. She help my husband and 3 others secure a taxi and go on their own. I loved the hot drinks waiting as we arrived back on board from a cold excursion. The embarkment and disembarkation went very smooth. There was always plenty of Viking staff to help facilitate at the airport and terminals. Recommendations: -My husband really enjoyed the pianist on board very much. -waffles at Mamsen -The Grieg excursion in Bergen. -The Northern Lights excursion in Tromso ....we had the most incredible Northern Light show. -Take the cable car up the mountain on your on in Tromso. The views are beautiful. Tromso was our favorite city. - The Northern Light cathedral in Alta. We will defiantly take another Viking cruise in the future! Read Less

My wife and I were intrigued by visiting Norway in winter, and Viking included free air on this cruise from Bergen. We paid for a Veranda cabin and were upgraded to Deluxe Veranda. It seems like everything is expensive in Norway, so staying on a cruise ship is a bargain by comparison. Winter in the Arctic makes this something of an adventure cruise. The included bus excursions are fine, but they get repetitive, and we wanted to take some optional excursions into the countryside. Overnight stays in Bergen, Alta, and Tromso gave extra time for shore excursions or browsing in town. Wearing multiple layers of warm clothing made outdoor excursions comfortable, but it did make the buses seem overheated. We particularly enjoyed visiting the Sami camp with reindeer sledding outside of Tromso. The Polar Park outside of Narvik was also good but high chain link fences make animal photography difficult. More daring souls might want to enter the enclosure with wolves. High winds caused the ship to skip the planned stop in Bode, but we enjoyed a longer stay in Stavanger instead. Flying to Bergen in January was more of an adventure than planned. Bad weather across much or the US was causing extensive cancellations and delays. Viking did a good job of getting everyone to the ship, but some arrivals were quite late. A pre-cruise extension would have helped,at a cost not much more than one more optional shore excursion. On the other hand, we made friends at airports with other cruisers who had similar itineraries, and we ended up eating some dinners together. Best dining by far is at Manfredi's. We ate there twice. Make reservations at the first opportunity and don't fail to try the rib steak. Be aware that portion sizes are large, and we naturally wanted to try a variety of dishes. We ate most meals at the World Cafe because it was convenient and featured many of the same items served in the Restaurant without the time commitment or a dress code. The cabin service was particularly good. Our cabin attendant learned our names and habits and accommodated our early bedtimes with a special early turn-down service. We all hugged when the cruise was over. The enrichment lectures were all available on the cabin television. Northern Lights and Vikings were the favorite topics. I particularly enjoyed the Northern Lights Tour lecture in Alta. We had two nights in Tromso with magnificent displays of the Northern Lights. The whole sky lit up with colorful displays which were easily viewed from the ship. Those on Northern Lights shore excursions got an even better show on those nights, but on other nights they just spent several hours in the cold. The light show is going to vary from one cruise to the next, but when it is good it is fantastic! Overall, it was a wonderful cruise. Prepare to have a great time. Read Less

We chose Viking Ocean because of excellent experiences with Viking River Cruises, of which we have been on four in Europe. We were not disappointed. Before I write the review for this cruise, a word about the ocean: Traveling the North Sea and Bay of Biscay is a completely different animal from cruising the Caribbean, where most “past-cruisers” have gone. Here you really are “at sea,” with all that entails: waves and troughs that can easily be 20 to 30 feet high, storms, and other nasty weather. As a Navy veteran I absolutely loved the return to the open sea, but many on board seemed quite nonplussed that they weren’t on the glassy surfaces they had previously experienced. Do your homework. Travel to and from: Viking offers deals on air transportation. If you can, it is much easier to package your entire trip with them, including insurance (which we found to be quite reasonable). Once you land at your embarkation destination, worries go away as Viking takes care of everything. Once your trip is over and you return to an airport, Viking people go with you and make sure you have found your flight and gate. I find that quite impressive. They could, but do not, abandon you after you leave the ship. Regarding the Viking Sun: The ship was immaculate, as all Viking ships (ocean) and boats (rivers) are. The amenities were impeccable, from the four or five places to dine to the public spaces where, seemingly, every comfort was anticipated. There was even a jigsaw puzzle table. The crew was also wonderful. A mandatory tip is assessed to each passenger but we additionally tipped our cabin cleaning duo and a particularly fun waiter. We asked for his table every evening. There was not a single crew member who was less than helpful and accommodating. The size of the ship is perfect. Slightly less than 1,000 passengers mean relatively quick off-and-on. Personal service is possible with a ship that size, and the ports you visit aren’t inundated with your fellow shipmates (especially in off-season, which is when we travelled). Remember, though, that a somewhat smaller ship may be more difficult for passengers in rough seas. Dining was also very good. The portions are smaller than we are used to but we certainly weren't hungry after eating. There is a local menu, a chef's specialty menu, and a "standard" menu for those of more traditional taste. As mentioned above, the table service was as good as it could be. Shore excursions: Because I have a limited ability to walk, my wife and I had limited ability to enjoy excursions, me more than she. I offer this caution: if you can avoid the "Panoramic _____ (major city)." You get driven around in a bus with maybe a stop or two and can point at places you've heard of/seen before, but that's about it. Have I been to London? Well, I've been THROUGH London but saw it mostly through a bus window. For those old enough to remember: "If it's Tuesday it Must be Belgium." Attached is an image from an iPhone 8, taken through a bus window (Buckingham Palace in the distance). Amsterdam was somewhat different: there we toured canals in an enclosed boat, but the result was similar. Read Less

We booked this cruise because of the itinerary and my wife's experience with Viking river cruises. Both the destinations and the hospitality were outstanding! The tour guides with real historical chops and the resident historians were stars. The food was on par with a legend of Valhalla (see what I did there?) We loved creativity of the Chef's Table, and were surprised it wasn't more packed. We were also pleasantly surprised by the excellent musical talent of the entertainment; they were professional and I would not be surprised to see them in first class musical theater productions or commercially successful in selling recordings. My only disappointment was the unavailability of spots on some shore excursions. In particular, we were unable to get in the Alhambra tour, and that was one of the top three reasons we picked this cruise. Bottom line, we loved it so much that we signed up (on the boat) for another ocean cruise in the eastern Mediterranean in 2020, and we are trying to get our extended family members interested. All values are excellent combined into very high rate of “VALUELITY”. Good shore excursions included in each of the port plus some free time for self exploration. We do not require ourself much regarding the cabin, but it was roomier than we need since we spent most of the time in and about. Food was unbelievable, especially at the specialty restaurants, and most surprisingly was from the GRILL. The experience talks onboard were somewhat not in our interests as the topics were not current. The entertainments were good and suitable to the level of audience and age. We had turned in several suggestions regarding more visual (such as videos) for us to compare the OPTIONAL excursions, about more channels choice on television (such as US news and sport channels) as well as the option for close-caption. We also suggested the use of phone notification to remind us the times for excursions and for entertainment shows. Read Less

Past good experiences and the newness of the ship contributed to our choice. The service is not 6 star and the food is not outstanding. Afternoon tea is well done. The excursions were adequate. The on board lectures were well presented and informative. Our cabin this time was the lowest category. On our first ocean cruise with Viking we had a penthouse category. The service was just average. The value is about average. The Viking cruise experience is in the middle between Holland America and Crystal. The Cunard experience has fallen recently even below Holland America. Viking Ocean cruises offer a carefully curated itinerary, but the excursions are often farmed out to the local guides and coaches; thus, the quality is uncertain. The staff appeared overworked at times. The public rooms and the overall design of the ship are very attractive. The entertainment is average. On the whole, I recommend suite cabins on Holland America, which offer service above and beyond Viking, for about the same cost. Read Less

My husband & I sailed with Viking only once before, the year prior. The ship is beautiful, clean, comfortable, & the service is wonderful. The staff on both cruises were professional & so friendly. We chose this cruise because of the destinations. Instead of common places that most cruises visit, the chance to see the Shetlands, Iceland & Greenland was something we wanted to do. All went smoothly from check-in to disembarkation. The food is delicious with a great variety of offerings. It is a definite plus that wine is offered with both lunch & dinner. There is a wide range of choices for shore excursions that we have found are done by very knowledgeable local guides. Our only negative was out of the control of Viking because it was the weather & falls under Mother Nature. There were storms in the area which did not allow for us to make 4 ports. Although we were very disappointed, it was a wise decision on the part of the captain, as none of us wanted to experience 40 ft. seas. We are pleased that Viking lived up to its reputation & immediately offered credit for the missed ports for a future cruise The sales of 2 for 1 have made it possible for us to experience these cruises. Without, we would never be able to afford. We have taken advantage of another sale in combination with the credit we received & have booked another cruise, this time for a river cruise. We are truly looking forward to. Read Less

I had cruised only on large ships before and vowed never to cruise again. I detested the crowds, the noise, the hard sell of 'art', photography, etc. I detested the noisy silly games, music so loud that I couldn't stay in pool area, no quiet spots for conversation or reading and most of all the crowds. A friend told me about Viking and since I wanted to sail the Norwegian fiords, I booked. It was a revelation...no crowds, plenty of quiet lovely spots to converse, read or simply contemplate the sea. There were comfortable area to have drinks, view the sea, listen to lovely music especially a classical guitarist. A small shop with necessities and a few luxuries but no 'selling'. The spa was lovely. I did not go to any of the non included speciality restaurants as the included restaurant and the buffet were lovely. There is one included excursion at every port. They were pretty basic but gave an overview. I did about 11/2 and 1/2 of included vs purchased. All were excellent. The highlight was kayaking (not included) in a fiord! I ad one of the less expensive staterooms. It was spacious and lovely, a very nice balcony and a large wonderfully appointed bathroom. The crew starting with room stewards, waiters, chefs, everyone were excellent. Not a single glitch! I liked it so much that while on board I booked a Viking cruise to Australia! Read Less

The variety of restaurants and the quality of food was without question outstanding and there was some food available all day and an afternoon tea was thrown in as well As is true with many excursion opportunities the experience is in the eye of the beholder. All included excursions very basic and usually a bus panoramic of the city. We have gone on four river cruises with Viking, so we knew we'd have a high-calibre experience. However, this was our first ocean cruise. We've avoided ocean cruises because the idea of sailing with thousands of people on a behemoth of a ship held no appeal. But Viking's small ship experience is something completely different. No tendering in from a ship docked in open water, 5 minutes to disembark for even the most popular attractions, and no children. (Sorry, but now that we are empty-nesters, we want adult company when we travel.) The staterooms were excellent and the food exceptional. We paid for a penthouse veranda cabin (which got us free laundry and lots of space) but didn't go so far as to book a cabin with a separate sitting room. That turned out to be a good move: the sitting room cabins were really the same accommodation with a curtain separating the sleeping and sitting areas. The tours were excellent and varied. Every port included at least one free tour, but we found that the "included panorama tour" was often a bus tour with little chance to really explore - bite the bullet and do one of the special activities in every port. To be honest, we didn't take advantage of the nightly entertainment, preferring to socialize with fellow passengers or hit the hay. We chose the tour for the itinerary, never having been traveled through Scandinavia. Traveling in September meant we hit rain and cool weather in Finland and Norway, but even then the enrichment activities were well worth the time. Once out of Finland, the sun was with us for the rest of the trip. We took way too many clothes. Despite the advice to dress formally for the specialty restaurants, one nice pair of pants and a nice blouse or sweater is really all you need - and men didn't always wear jackets even in the nicest restaurants. Furthermore, if you are in a penthouse category stateroom, the laundromat is free so you don't need two weeks' worth of clothes (just don't plan to do your laundry when the ship is at sea for the whole day - everyone has the same idea!) As I said in the title, we had such a great experience that we booked 2 more cruises (Bergen-London and Barcelona-Venice) before we left the ship. There are some excellent perks offered for doing so and few penalties if you subsequently change your mind. We were glad to book early, as the ocean cruises seem to fill up very quickly. Read Less

We have travelled the world extensively but never been to Scandinavia or Russia so this looked like a good way to do a first experience in that part of the world. When we looked at the various options it seemed like Viking was the best for many reasons. First among those reasons was that it was a smaller ship which meant that everything was not so crowded with only 930 guests. All cabins were outside with balconies and from the internet pictures looked very comfortable and well appointed which they were. One of the features that particularly attracted us was the list of what they did not do or have since we were more interested in an expedition type cruise rather than a floating party. For example, they have no casinos and big entertainment. No passengers under 18. No umbrella drinks. No photographers. No nickel and dime treatment. No extra charge for different dining venues. No charge for wifi and the list goes on. The shore excursions were interesting and varied as well as being included for at least one in every port with other options which cost extra. They were all very well organized with smaller groups. Prior to any shore excursion there was a comprehensive briefing to supplement the hand-out information in their booklets. The crew were very accommodating, the entertainment good without being too elaborate and every aspect of the service was first class. Read Less

We are interested in this part of the world due to our heritage and were very excited to see all the delightful tour spots. We also met up with our high school foreign exchange student from 50 years ago in Bergen Norway. We loved every minute of the cruise and everything on board the ship was just perfect. You could not ask for better facilities. The food is just terrific in every way and delicious. From the more formal dining restaurants to the World Cafe, you always receive a fantastic meal. All the crew is top notch in every regard and always gave the most gracious service for any and every request. I love the way they remember your name. Our only regret is that we did not have more time in Berlin. I guess we are going to have to go back! The Soviet Flashback tour was a unique eyeopening and informational event as well as the most entertaining day. That was our favorite tour. We also were so fortunate to have dinner at the Captain's Table which was a real treat. And our cruise director Beven Addinsall was terrific! We also appreciated and feel so fortunate to have received the opportunity to upgrade our room just prior to the cruise. It really made a difference in our comfort level and total experience. We are looking forward to our next cruise to Egypt this September! Read Less

2 years ago we chose this cruise to followed the path my ancestors( Vikings) took to discover the North American continent. This cruise took us to places that most people will never visit. The cruise introduced us to a world of harsh weather conditions with unique beautiful landscapes, and lots of sheep! We chose a three day extension on the front end of this cruise to explore Iceland. We were put up in an excellent hotel (Hilton) and the included tours, golden circle, blue lagoon and Reykjavík tours allowed us to see many of the top ten sights when visiting Iceland. Flights, transfers were all handled professionally. Next we flew on to Bergen, Norway, our port for embarkation. We were in Bergen two days allowing a complete tour of the local area. The included tour gave us a great view of Bergen. We signed up for an optional tour to go to the top of Mount Floien. This tour was a little disappointing as half of the tour completely overlapped the included tour. We would have better served to have just walked off the ship and to the funicular, bought a ticket and gone to Mount Floien on our own, definitely not worth the extra cost. This was our first Viking Ocean Cruise so being on their ship was a new unique experience. The ship was beautiful throughout with only 900 passengers. Our cabin, a penthouse suite, was very comfortable throughout the cruise. Our cabin staff was absolutely outstanding, we were treated great. The dining options on the ship again were fantastic. Many daily options with changing menus allowed a new dining experience at every meal and the food was fabulous. Again the waiters and waitresses were excellent. We were amazed how they all knew our names by the second day. The specialty restaurants, Manfredi’s and Chef’s Table both had unique menus. Manfredi’s an Italian cuisine had many terrific dishes to choose from. The Chef’s Table was a uniques dining experience with a changing menu every 3 or 4 days. This restaurant was a set five course meal. While unique and things we normally wouldn’t eat the portions were kinda tiny. During the entire cruise multiple educational seminar were offered by four different professors on a full range of Viking and Country specific topics. We found these seminars excellent and made days at sea flow quickly. In addition, the professional entertainment in the evenings far exceeded our expectations. Throughout the cruise we utilized the spa facilities to workout, utilize the saunas and cold room and the hot tubs. We found these excellent. Finally we utilized some spa services and found these enjoyable. During our cruise we found the included tours at each port to be very good. On the Shetland Islands and Faroe Islands we signed up for optional tours to try to see more of these islands while we were there. While these tours (North Shore of the Shetlands) and (The Island of Vagar) on the Faroe were interesting, both of these tours repeated the included tours taken in the morning, so in the future we will be more careful what optional tours we select. On this trip it was just myself and my spouse, no kids, in fact there were no kids on this cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise on a Viking ocean ship after many cruises on Holland America and several on Oceana and the entire cruise was excellent. Our stateroom on deck 6 was a good size with lots of storage space. The selection of shore excursions was quite good and this was a big concern with us as we have been spoiled with the Holland America shore trips selections over the years. The food is very good and the service was outstanding. We like the concept of no broadway shows, no casinos, and no one under 18 years old. Overall Viking is very well organized for embarkation and extremely well organized on disembarkation. The only issue was the immigration folks in Bergen, Norway who were very slow. Viking uses Bergen as its headquarters we believe so they need to exert influence on the Norway officials. The Viking Sea is a very nice, modern ship and Viking obviously did their homework before launching it. There are lots of nice public areas. Their World Cafe is well organized with very few lines to get served. The other great point compared to other cruise lines is that they don't "nickle and dime" you to death. There is free WiFi, free water when going ashore, free wine and beer with lunch and dinner, no charge for the specialty restaurants, ability to bring a bottle of wine on board from shore trips at no charge, one included shore trip at each port, and wonderful staff. We chose this cruise because we had never previously been to Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Shetland Islands, or Faroe Islands. We learned so much about the Viking influences on these places, and enjoyed surprisingly good, sunny weather. The only disappointment was not seeing the Northern Lights, but it was probably the wrong time of year. Even when turbulent seas prevented landing in one port, it seemed that the staff went "overboard" to increase activities and food choices that day. We continually recommend Viking because of the service, attentiveness, and informative shore excursions. We like the fact that there is an included excursion in each port, with additional options in some places. Also, the included wine and beer with lunch and dinner is a plus, but additional beverage packages are also available. My advice to smart consumers is to become a repeat customer, as the perks are enviable. Additionally, the Viking Ocean liners hold about 930 passengers, with the amazing spa areas including hot bathing, snow room and sauna. Try them, you will like them! Read Less

Fantastic dining, fabulous musicians (Viking Trio). Outstanding excursions and itinerary. Comfortable stateroom. Viking ocean exceeded our expectations. Having been on more than a dozen cruises, we are pretty hard to impress. The Dining Room manager more than accommodated vegetarian menu requests by having a vegetarian "soup for one" prepared every night for dinner. He also worked with the chef to create entrees that were unusual. Menu diversity is generally limited on cruises, not true on Viking Star. The Chef and staff went above and beyond to meet our requests. Cabin life was comfortable, storage was limited but once we organized ourselves it was comfortable. I really loved the cashmere throws available on the bed and in public spaces to help ward of any chill. The Viking Trio was outstanding. Their performances were wonderful. The variety of music from a string trio was exceptional. The group members were personable and made the evenings very enjoyable. We hope to see them again on future cruises. The Baltic region is magical. We booked the 2 day pre cruise in Oslo and the accommodations were great, the staff were fantastic and the train was a wonderful experience. We highly recommend Viking Ocean to our fellow cruisers. Read Less

There were so many interesting locations to view and visit while enjoying luxurious service, dining and comfort. Viking spoils their passengers. Service is impeccable and wonderful selection of restaurants onboard. Cabin service is excellent, from cleanliness to accommodation. This was my fourth trip with Viking River and Ocean cruise and I’m now planning my fifth. Viking makes traveling so easy for you by collecting you at the airport and retuning for your flight home. It’s obvious Viking takes the time to properly train their employees. I actually walked into my once and found someone cleaning under my bed. You’ll find from the stewards, bartenders, servers will help you with anything you ask. The concierge will go out of their way to grant any request you have. Viking has wonderful entertainment. From dancing, singing, comedy etc. to a large current selection of movie and tv programs. After a day of fascinatingly excursions it’s nice to have dinner in or out of your room and then relax with a movie. Again, I’ll say Viking absolutely spoils their guests. Read Less

Past good experience with Viking so wanted to take this cruise with them. This was our 1st ocean cruise with them, previously 3 river cruises. As previously the ships are spotless, with a friendly, helpful and polite crew. Cabins were excellent and cabin boys very helpful. The food was excellent, especially the 2 "speciality" restaurants, again wait staff very friendly, helpful, and efficient. Ample food selection. Entertainment was very good but did not attend many lectures. The shore excursions were well organized, with knowledgeable guides, the only negative being the 3 hour (each way) train trip to visit Berlin. Given the experience we have already booked our next ocean cruise - "Empires of the Mediterranean"; however, due to the popularity of Viking cruises, this cruise will only be in 2020 as all 2019 cruises for this itinerary were sold out by September 2018! Given our experiences with Viking cruises, we would definitely recommend any of their cruises, though the accomadation on the Mekong River cruise was a little sparse. Read Less

We went on the Viking Star to see all the great places we went to. Loved the Viking river cruise we took in 2014, so wanted to try an ocean cruise. Viking is the best in every way: accommodations, excursions, food, service, transfers & crew. We met & dined with many friendly & interesting people from all over the world. The excursions were well organized & the tour guides knowledgeable & friendly as well. Cabins were kept clean daily with replenishment of fridge daily as well. Plenty of room/space with a nice balcony. Room service was a plus & breakfast came promptly at our requested time. Plenty of joices & not limited to breakfast. Even had drinks delivered to our room so we could sit on the balcony & enjoy the view. We had the drink package which is a definite must. Another plus is booking the next cruise while on the ship. You get discounts on both the current cruise & the next one. Also, get extended time to pay for next cruise & can change up to 4 months prior to the cruise. Read Less
