We've sailed on Viking River cruises and found them to be first rate, so we were eager to sail on their British Isles Ocean Cruise. We have traveled on other ocean cruise lines and have been disappointed in many aspects. Viking does not disappoint! The attractiveness and cleanliness of the Viking Sun was amazing. The Sun had the most comfortable stateroom ever, with a veranda, ample closet and drawer space...and that bathroom with the heated floor! Many cruise ships have redundant menus and not a lot of dining options. So many choices were available and we booked the specialty restaurants a few nights. We also enjoyed the seafood buffet on several occasions. The menus were varied and wine or beer was served at each meal. The menus included some of the local flavors of the areas we visited...and that's an important part of traveling to us. I also have to say that we also took advantage of breakfast in bed on more than one morning! I have to mention ... all of this at no additional cost! Other cruise lines "nickle and dime" continuously. Unfortunately we weren't able to partake of all the activities offered on board...there were so many, we didn't have enough time to do them all! The entertainment was more than outstanding and we look forward to the performances of the talented performers every night. One of the most outstanding features of this cruise was the service. I commend whomever does the hiring and training of the staff. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly and eager to serve, in a comfortable, relaxed way...no stuffiness! We were always addressed by our names, we felt like valued guests. The port excursions were terrific. The guides were so informative and we appreciated the local perspective and personal stories they shared. It was nice to have included excursions in each port and well as more in-depth tours available to book. We were so delighted with our experience on the Viking Sun, that while on board we booked an Alaskan Cruise! **Warning** They book up fast, we couldn't get on til 2020! I truly have to say that our first choice will always be Viking for any future cruises! Read Less

This was our fourth Viking Ocean Cruise which makes us a real Viking follower and supporter. As usual, the embarkation went smoothly with a Viking representative meeting us at the airport and providing transportation directly to our ship. On this particular cruise, we started in Bergen, Norway and did one of the included tours plus we went up to Mt. Floien. Both our ship and cabin were first class, very clean with outstanding facilities to make our trip that much rewarding. One of the perks of sailing with Viking is the first class dining onboard that makes you feel that you are at a Michelin star restaurant. In addition to the main restaurant, you have two specialty restaurants in Manfredi’s and the Chef’s Table. Both serve amazing food and first class service along with a pretty good selection of wines. Besides Bergen, we stopped at different ports in Ireland, England and Scotland. The included tours and excursion obviously are first class but we did book some optional excursions that were both intriguing and interesting. Viking has a variety of entertainment including visiting speakers and musicians. The Viking entertainment group performed several different dance and singing routines that I thought were excellent. Overall, Viking provides a wonderful travel experience from start to finish. They are well organized and as a traveler, everything is provided so that you can just sit back and relax. From start to finish, the crew and staff can’t do enough for you so that the only thing you have to do is be grateful that you have so many memories. Read Less

We chose this Cruise to travel with another couple and made the reservation over a year ahead. The quality of ship, crew, services and experiences was exceptional. We enjoyed the amenities of the ship and quality of the design of the ship. Our prior experience with Viking has been on European River Cruises. The ability of us to be on the same tour bus was not able to be accommodated consistently.. Many times, much to our frustration, we found that we were assigned different busses for a given tour. We found some local guides were much better than others. Uneven utilization of audio devices was disconcerting as some guides said they had requested one but had been denied. We wish that they would not fill the tenders to capacity when shuttling for tours. More trips with less crowding would be much better. We found the internet connection speeds to be inconsistent. I would think this should be able to be improved. We particularly enjoyed Luis on the guitar and Dr. Lori talking about Viking history. Read Less

This was our first experience with Viking Ocean Cruises. The ship was a perfect size, the staff was very accommodating, the food was delicious and plentiful. The included tours were all very good and well organized. We had no complaints with any aspect of the cruise. We were so pleased that we have booked a river cruise for next year and have been told that they are even better. We loved the fact that there were no passengers under 18. Viking does Ocean cruises like they were meant to be and used to be. Bigger ships does not mean better, in fact, just the opposite. You may pay more with Viking but it is worth it. Viking ships provide balconies with all their rooms, no inside cabins. Awesome setup. The bathroom floor was heated which is nice in the colder climates. We can’t wait to do another ocean cruise with Viking. Read Less

We took this cruise to try out Viking and see if they were worth it and they are! Brand new ship, perfect size, very happy, friendly crew willing to serve. Excellent food, very good entertainment and all around great time. Very good excursions. Only one included excursion that my wife took in Dublin was a total disaster due to a very bad male tour guide who did a very poor job. My two paid for excursions that day in Dublin were excellent. We liked all the ports we visited but wished that we could of had one more day in Edinburgh. That best thing the ship had was the high tea everyday with wonderful scones. I tried out the spa with the large soaking tub, snow room, sauna and cold dip pool and I was really impressed with the whole thing. Every day I went to the gym and found it very clean and the perfect size but wished they had more bicycle/spin machines. We liked Viking so much that we booked two future cruises. Read Less

Unpacking once and being able to experience multiple ports of calls by simply stepping off the ship was wonderful. The food overall was delicious and we had many choices of cuisine and restaurants. . It was fun to taste the local cuisine at lunch and dinner in each port of call. The guides were so knowledgeable and having the Port talks and Q&As helped tremendously. It enabled the experience of the historical sites to be all we hoped they would be. The Cruise Director gave us little tops for each stop. My favorite spot Eidfjord,Norway, was beyond spectacular as we viewed it from our balcony at sunrise. It had been a life long dream to see the Fjords and it surpassed all of my expectations. The most wonderful part overall was the total relaxation on this beautiful luxurious ship. There was nothing you could want for, from the throw blankets everywhere to the popcorn and movies at night to be taken care of at every moment by a very efficient, friendly crew. Read Less

This was our third Viking Cruise (second Ocean), and we have two more river cruises scheduled for 2019. In our opinion, Viking Cruises has always been at the top of our list. I'm not sure if they are experiencing growing pains, but.. Viking does a poor job at advising passengers that they are put in the back of the bus when it comes to booking amenities such as Optional Excursions, Included Excursions, Restaurants, and other Ship activities. If we had know that Class of Service was a direct tie to options, we would have never booked it. All of the optional tours were sold out when we were allowed to book them. All of the included tours were only available in the afternoon. Don't get me wrong, we were pretty excited to be able get the lowest fair available for this Cruise, but we paid a price for the options!!! To say the least, we were disappointed!!! Utilizing Viking Travel leaves a lot to be desired!!!! At one point, we were about to board our flight for our extended stay in Edinburgh. I'm not sure why, but we got stuck paying for our luggage at a tune of GBP 130. We were told by a Viking Customer Service Rep to refer to the "Fine Print". I sent a claim to Viking Customer Relations, but received a canned response that it will take 5 Business Days to review and respond. The entire staff on the ship exceeded our expectations. Overall, Viking has dropped a notch in our books from "Excellent" to "Very Good". Read Less

The time of year is perfect for us. The food was the best I've had on any cruise. Delicious soup. Sea food was outstanding: sushi, crab, shell fish, salmon, etc. And this was nightly fare on the 7th deck. The specialty restaurants are overrated. They tried too hard. Food was better in the main restaurant and the 7th floor. The Explorer Lounge was a treat at any time of day. High Tea was very satisfying. Ship size is perfect. Closest to Holland American than any other that line I've been on. Shore excursions were adequate. Guides were indifferent; some were good, only a few were outstanding, but the good ones were surperlative. But the excursions were uniformly satisfactory. Music was balanced. The trio improved the more they played together. Service was tops, rivaled only by the River Cruise in China. Superior to River Cruise oin Germany. Room service was punctual and complete. Laundry self-service was most convenient. Booked our next cruise while on board the Viking Sun. Read Less

The ship was gorgeous with so many wonderful spaces, fabulous food and great, varied choices. good wine with meals, outstanding entertainment and we even enjoyed the excursions. The staff was simply amazing and we wanted for nothing. There was always a smile and a warm welcome. We will definitely take another Viking Ocean cruise. We thought that 14 nights would be too long. It was just perfect...We also loved the itinerary. The only negative is one of the excursions that we paid extra for was a huge disappointment. It was for bird watching and we were informed too late that all the sea birds were already gone at this time of year. Viking should have known that and informed us. That is our only complaint, other than the gym. IN a perfect world there would be a more varied schedule for classes other than 7:30am. A casino would be fun as well. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the cruise line. We have traveled on Viking River cruises but not their ocean line. We did the pre-extension in Iceland and then flew to Bergen, Norway to board the ship. The ship is beautiful. All of the crew were wonderful and helpful. Even though there were 900 guests on board, it was not crowded and just a fantastic experience. The cabin, which was a Verandah on the 6th floor, was perfectly planned. Lots of storage and easy to move around in. There were two, no reservation dining areas, and two reservation dining rooms. We chose to eat in the areas that did not require reservations. The staff was great and the food was plentiful and wonderful. We did a shore excursion in every port as we wanted to experience as much as we could. We truly enjoyed the ones out in the countryside versus the ones in the city. It was great that they offered excursions for folks with mobility issues as we met wonderful people that could not go on many of the excursions we went on but thoroughly enjoyed the simpler tours. We sailed with the Viking Sea from London to Britain and then to the multiple Fjords in Norway. We were very impressed with everything Viking. Everything from embarkation to post cruise tour to Iceland went exceptionally well. It took us a few days to get used to the quality of service we experienced. Everytime we took a shower, our steward would come in when we left and clean the entire bathroom and place all new towels. Every time we messed up our bed linen the sheets were always straightened and changed if needed. The food service in all Dining options was exceptional. At the start of our trip we thought we would want to have special dinners in the Restaurant or Manfredi's or at The Chef's Table. However, we ended up eating most often at The World Cafe "buffet" area, as the food was incredible. I love seafood, and there were always, crab legs and shrimp and sea bass or so many other delightful options. My husband and our friends we were with, also always found their favorites with so many options from salads to pizza to Prime rib to steaks or lamb. The service was great everywhere and even at the buffet after making our choices the servers still brought us wines and coffee's and bread or anything we requested. Everyone treated us like we were family. Loved It!!! The entertainment was all done by staff, from the Director to the assistant Director to other servers and staff. We were tremendously impressed by the talent that we were treated to. Viking knew the audience and played to them with Elvis Presley impressionist and many other awesome shows. Amazing. We also enjoyed the evening bar singers and that atmosphere. Our ship was so impressive and spotless! The infinity pool off the front deck was awesome and the pool on the top deck was perfectly heated. On the evening of the Midnight sun we were able to see the sun go down and come back up within two minutes on the same spot! The most impressive was the nature around us, such as the Sisters Falls and the hugh troll face carved into the side of the mountain. We enjoyed and excursion everday and always were totally impressed not only with nature but also with the preparations that Viking had made that made every trip PERFECT!!! We participated in the Iceland Excursion and was so impressive. Wow! Four days where we saw Geysers that erupted every 5 minutes to a Volcano crater we walked around, and a Hugh water fall with a salmon latter, as well as swimminng in the Blue Lagoon and having a facial with the mineral's found in the Lagoon. Writing about all of this makes me want to do it all over again. Absolute Perfection all the way around!!! You may think that because this review is so good that I am just a positive person. This is not quite true as people who know me know my opinion needs to be well earned. This one was! Read Less

We had a great time on our Baltic Sea cruise. So many ports to visit! The enrichment opportunities on board are excellent. The entertainment was very enjoyable. The staff was fantastic! The sights were amazing! We chose to eat, mainly, on the 7th floor. We found that when we ate in the dining room, we were squeezed in ( even if it wasn't very crowded) almost sitting at the same table with strangers. My husband really disliked eating this way. Most of the guides were quite knowledgeable, but many weren't that engaging. We found that on a River Cruise, all guides were spectacular and were actually from those towns (many for generations). Ocean just wasn't like that. In Germany we had a college student, not even from Germany. I mentioned this on our River Cruise Evaluation too, but is there any way to provide a magnifying mirror with lights in bathrooms? The lighting isnt spectacular and most of your passengers are over 50. Read Less

My husband has always wanted to see The Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. We have never cruised before, and when our friend said she found the perfect cruise for us that included Russia, we said ok. We started booking this cruise through a good friend Kathy Geremia (Bullfrog Travel) two years in advance, and had no idea what it would be like. We traveled to Bergen a day in advance of August 7th, and when we took a walk to the port where The Viking Sea was docked we were speechless at its size! The next day we boarded this ship, and everyday for 14 days, the experience took our breath away and exceeded our every expectation. The Viking Sea is a 5 star floating hotel, with 400 staff who work to make everyday on board a wonderful experience. The 7 different restaurants are all excellent in their own way, and we were never disappointed at the quality of the food or the excellent service in each one. I have many food allergies and food sensitivities and from day one the staff knew of them all and prepared food that was incredible, and kept me from any dietary problems! All of our excursions were run with precise timing (especially since they were moving 930 people around daily) and the guides were very informative. The staff on this cruise was exceptional! They knew our names, always had a smile, and nice things to say to each guest. They made everyone feel special. Everyone worked hard to make this cruise wonderful for everyone on board. We set the bar extremely high for our first cruise, and will highly recommend this Viking Ocean cruise. It truly was the trip of a lifetime! Thank you Viking for creating wonderful memories for my husband and I. Read Less

The Viking Band was an added plus if you want to dance a little after dinner. The included side trips were very good especially the train to Berlin. The not included trips could be done in some cases better and cheaper on your own. In St. Petersburg we used Alla Tours and in Stavanger we used Rodne. We found the entire staff very very friendly and wanting to make you feel right at home. All the dining areas were very nice and the food was great. We loved the entire experience - our cabin was quite comfortable, the crew was professional and always had a smile and the food was excellent with many wonderful choices. This was our first cruise together and we loved the experience and will definitely book another Viking ocean cruise. The only complaint we had is that there were too many ports for the length of the cruise. We definitely would have liked more time in Copenhagen and maybe cut out the Alborg, Denmark stop. The guides make such a difference in the success of the shore excursions and we had fantastic guides in all ports but one. The crew was also a highlight of the trip - they came from 32 different countries and they had such an excellent attitude and always asking if we needed anything. Overall, this was a truly memorable experience for my husband and me and we look forward to our next Viking ocean cruise in Asia a year from November. Read Less

The entertainment in the evenings was varied and very professional. We also enjoyed the various lectures by the historians on board that gave us historical perspectives of each of our destinations as we were approaching those destinations. First of all, this cruise has a wonderful itinerary and spends the 16 days in the right places. We started in Oslo, and spent a few days there beforehand on our own. If you’re not comfortable doing that, take advantage of Vikings pre-sail offering. Oslo is a must see. We took the scenic train to Bergen, again on our own but Viking offers this as well. The scenery especially of the glaciers is stunning. The 3plus days in the Norwegian fjords is lovely. Spectacular scenery and great activities. 2 days in St Petersburg was enough for what we wanted, and the remaining mostly full days everywhere else were also enough to get a taste of the rich history and food! The ship itself is 5*. The service was great and to a person the staff was friendly, helpful and one step ahead of us. The food, honestly, was some of the best we’ve ever had and we are well travelled (4 of us from major metropolitan areas) . On our day at sea, we went to a cooking demo with the Executive chef, Eric (a hoot and we learned a ton), took a cooking class (small group of 9) and then went to the spa for a massage (inexpensive @ $135 for 50mins) . Then it was cocktails on our deck. Our cabin (we upgraded a few levels) was a decent size, well equipped and our mini bar was replenished daily. We also participated in a few yoga classes I can’t say enough about this cruise, but if you’re at all considering it, take it. You will be so glad that you did. Read Less

We chose the Viking Homelands cruise for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that we've never been to Scandinavia or Russia and were intrigued by the itinerary. We chose Viking having been on a Viking river cruise the previous summer and loved the experience. Viking is more expensive than most cruise lines, but the service and food are top-notch. Our cabin on the fifth deck midship was not spacious and lacked storage space, but for the amount of time we actually spent in it, it was more than adequate. A penthouse suite would have provided some extra space and we may consider that next time, although I'm not sure it's worth the upcharge. We were located close to the stairway and elevator, as well as the launderette, which was very convenient. Our cabin stewards were first rate and provided us with great service. We were always amazed that they remembered our name and could pronounce it correctly from the very first meeting. The food on board was excellent and occasionally exotic (reindeer consommé). We never lacked for sustenance. The ice cream and gelati were a daily treat that we're still trying to work off. The entertainment was superb. Usually on smaller ships, the entertainment suffers. Not so on the Sea. We also loved attending the historical lectures each day by the three onboard historians. A real plus! Read Less

The itinerary included many places of interest to us and the scenery did not disappoint. And this was our fist time ever traveling in an organised fashion. We are very independent travellers and so required some adjustment. However, we commend Viking for turning us in to cruise converts! Overall we were very pleased with the experience. The major disappointment was the ballet in St. Petersburg. It sounded as if we would be attending a performance of the St. Petersburg Ballet, but instead the production was for tourists and very amateurish. The photographs and write up in the shore excursion description were quite misleading. A suggestion we have is to provide some sort of system so that passengers can connect with others who have common interests. For example, it would have been nice to have a way for those interested in playing bridge could connect. Or, perhaps connect with others who would have liked to share a shore excursion other than those offered by Viking. The classical entertainment was quite good, but the rest was honestly pretty lame. Still we didn't have to go, so we didn't! Friends we travelled with were disappointed at the lack of opportunities to dance on board. All of our interactions with the ship's crew were excellent. People were friendly, helpful and paid extraordinary attention to ensuring things ran smoothly. Kudos and deep gratitude to them all. Read Less

Very informative and provided great background on all the monarchies so when we visited places we had a much better understanding of the history. Service was very attentive for the most part. Ship cleanliness very impressive. Shore excursions were uneven, but generally good. Limited time in each port was a factor, but we enjoyed the overview of all the places. The exception was the long and hot train ride to Berlin and back. Do not recommend doing this. The food was delicious... lots of good options, and some very healthy choices too. This was an area of the world that we have always thought of visiting. To say the least, we had an outstanding cruise! Having a day in the originating and departing port was a bonus and exactly what we wanted. Checking into the ship was a breeze, no line and greeted warmly. There were more excursions than we could ever take on one journey so maybe we’ll have to do this again? Since we didn’t think we would ever do this again, it was hard to decide on just one a day! Our excursions were outstanding, the coaches were new, air conditioned, comfortable and never crowded. Our drivers were amazing and our tour guides were very knowledgeable and personable. There were excursions for every ability level and the transportation accommodated our needs for part of the family needing additional assistance. One of our excursions was scheduled for the building opening time so we were the very first group in the church and there were at least 2000 people outside waiting. Viking books their excursions well. The dining was always just right, from the specialty restaurants, to the main dining room to the buffet. We utilized room service each morning so we could sleep in just a bit longer before heading out on our excursions. This was wonderfully convenient and the food was hot and tasty. The common areas were impeccably clean and inviting. The staff in these areas were there to take care of you but not a nuisance. Every staff member on this ship is there to make you happy and they did. We chose Viking because pretty much everything is included and that included one excursion per port per day. There was no nickel and dimeing you on this cruise line and everything was top notch service oriented. I will only sail with Viking for any of my future adventures. The route and expected subject matter of the lectures and shore excursions were what we were looking for. We found the Viking Sea trip appropriate for our age and physical limitations and we always found helpful the understanding staff and their listening to our concerns and goals. The eating options were very fine with outstanding healthy food and good choices. The classical music and entertainment in the Star Theatre was top notch and we had a good time with others. We would recommend this route and Viking highly, especially for those with historical ties and appreciation of Northern European culture and history and art. I felt that several of the excursions were overpriced and not clearly explained as to difficulty of walking required. I think it would be an improvement to offer more ideas how travelers could explore the ports on their own. Panorama bus tours are not very satisfying especially if the guide talks too much and doesn't listen more to the participants. Read Less

We did 4 previous Viking cruises. The Into the Midnight Sun last year was outstanding. By that standard, this cruise was very good. The ships staff were excellent. The food and service were very good but not as excellent as the previous cruise. The train. Trip to Berlin was a bad experience, the train trip was too long in a coach with no air conditioning and no window curtains. The temperature was in the high 30s C. A train trip of this length is too long for a half day in Berlin. Dining at thr. restaurant, Manfredi’s and the world cafe was always superior. The other dining venues was OK. Our cabin PVR 6077 was the exact same as our previous Viking cruise, it’s location was excellent and very handy to the. World cafe, elevators, the laundry and to view scenery and ports. The cabin was large with many nice amenities. We asked for it as we were so happy with the same cabin on our previous cruise. The staff on board the ship were universally excellent, very attentive and always ready to. Help with a smile on their face. The expert speakers who prepared us for each port of call were very informative.Excursions were well planned and mostly well executed excep at Gdańsk where the tour guide was hopelessly disorganized and paid no attention to disabled members of the group, frequently outpacing them or misdirecting the group. We were very impressed with the ships Captain with whom we had several casual encounters. Very skillful as one would expect but very friendly and approachable. Though not part of the Cruise, the air experience with Iceland air was unacceptable. We were mis handled and misinformed by Icelandair staff in Reykjavík, even after a passenger revolt we were compelled to sit on the dirty floor for many hours. Our arrival in Oslo was 7 hours late, we arrived at the Hotel Bristol at 7:40 PM, negating the first day of our pre cruise extension. We had a serious delay on Icelandair on the return flight from Stockholm to uyReykjavik also. Our experience on the included excursion in Gdańsk was marred by a very poor tour guide who repeatedly couldn’t decide which way to walk or what to do about a conflicting city event or a torrential downpour. He paid no heed to the disabled members of our group. Read Less

We have traveled much of the World, but never to the Baltic states. So, this was our first introduction to Norway, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, etc. I recommend arriving a day early so you can enjoy Bergen and adjust to the time difference. You can also board the ship at a reasonable hour. This was our second Viking Ocean cruise. Great food, no sales pressure, no children, very relaxing. The housekeeping is amazing. We had a room very near the bow of the ship. I was at first concerned. But, it turned out to be very quiet at end of a hallway. The ship is small enough that one can walk it in just a few minutes. The standard and optional tours were mostly great. The Bergen crab boat lunch was the low point. Too pricey and not really much. The Flam railway was wonderful as were most of the other tours. St. Petersberg has its strengths. One palace was enough to see. They are all alike! Try to get off the boat and walk the cities. It's really the best way to see people and culture. Food across the board was very very good. The best vanilla gelato I’ve ever had. Crab legs constantly. Multiple restaurants on a relatively small ship. The front of the boat Norwegian restaurant was a wonderful change of pace. Read Less
