I had cruised only on large ships before and vowed never to cruise again. I detested the crowds, the noise, the hard sell of 'art', photography, etc. I detested the noisy silly games, music so loud that I couldn't stay in pool area, no quiet spots for conversation or reading and most of all the crowds. A friend told me about Viking and since I wanted to sail the Norwegian fiords, I booked. It was a revelation...no crowds, plenty of quiet lovely spots to converse, read or simply contemplate the sea. There were comfortable area to have drinks, view the sea, listen to lovely music especially a classical guitarist. A small shop with necessities and a few luxuries but no 'selling'. The spa was lovely. I did not go to any of the non included speciality restaurants as the included restaurant and the buffet were lovely. There is one included excursion at every port. They were pretty basic but gave an overview. I did about 11/2 and 1/2 of included vs purchased. All were excellent. The highlight was kayaking (not included) in a fiord! I ad one of the less expensive staterooms. It was spacious and lovely, a very nice balcony and a large wonderfully appointed bathroom. The crew starting with room stewards, waiters, chefs, everyone were excellent. Not a single glitch! I liked it so much that while on board I booked a Viking cruise to Australia! Read Less

We had never been to Iceland, Norway, Finland St Petersburg, Copenhagen etc. this cruise touched all of these countries. Also a small ship cruise no more than 900 people We were very impressed with the attention to detail, the attitude of the staff their service was exemplary. The cruise director Bevin was so engaging and brought great talent to the ship. The variety of restaurants and the quality of food was without question outstanding and there was some food available all day and an afternoon tea was thrown in as well As is true with many excursion opportunities the experience is in the eye of the beholder. All included excursions very basic and usually a bus panoramic of the city. Anything more required an additional payment and that could add up quite quickly. thhecgym was well equipped and while I did not use the sauna or the snow room those who did were quite happy with it. Overalll a company that delivers on outstanding customer service. Read Less

We have gone on four river cruises with Viking, so we knew we'd have a high-calibre experience. However, this was our first ocean cruise. We've avoided ocean cruises because the idea of sailing with thousands of people on a behemoth of a ship held no appeal. But Viking's small ship experience is something completely different. No tendering in from a ship docked in open water, 5 minutes to disembark for even the most popular attractions, and no children. (Sorry, but now that we are empty-nesters, we want adult company when we travel.) The staterooms were excellent and the food exceptional. We paid for a penthouse veranda cabin (which got us free laundry and lots of space) but didn't go so far as to book a cabin with a separate sitting room. That turned out to be a good move: the sitting room cabins were really the same accommodation with a curtain separating the sleeping and sitting areas. The tours were excellent and varied. Every port included at least one free tour, but we found that the "included panorama tour" was often a bus tour with little chance to really explore - bite the bullet and do one of the special activities in every port. To be honest, we didn't take advantage of the nightly entertainment, preferring to socialize with fellow passengers or hit the hay. We chose the tour for the itinerary, never having been traveled through Scandinavia. Traveling in September meant we hit rain and cool weather in Finland and Norway, but even then the enrichment activities were well worth the time. Once out of Finland, the sun was with us for the rest of the trip. We took way too many clothes. Despite the advice to dress formally for the specialty restaurants, one nice pair of pants and a nice blouse or sweater is really all you need - and men didn't always wear jackets even in the nicest restaurants. Furthermore, if you are in a penthouse category stateroom, the laundromat is free so you don't need two weeks' worth of clothes (just don't plan to do your laundry when the ship is at sea for the whole day - everyone has the same idea!) As I said in the title, we had such a great experience that we booked 2 more cruises (Bergen-London and Barcelona-Venice) before we left the ship. There are some excellent perks offered for doing so and few penalties if you subsequently change your mind. We were glad to book early, as the ocean cruises seem to fill up very quickly. Read Less

We have travelled the world extensively but never been to Scandinavia or Russia so this looked like a good way to do a first experience in that part of the world. When we looked at the various options it seemed like Viking was the best for many reasons. First among those reasons was that it was a smaller ship which meant that everything was not so crowded with only 930 guests. All cabins were outside with balconies and from the internet pictures looked very comfortable and well appointed which they were. One of the features that particularly attracted us was the list of what they did not do or have since we were more interested in an expedition type cruise rather than a floating party. For example, they have no casinos and big entertainment. No passengers under 18. No umbrella drinks. No photographers. No nickel and dime treatment. No extra charge for different dining venues. No charge for wifi and the list goes on. The shore excursions were interesting and varied as well as being included for at least one in every port with other options which cost extra. They were all very well organized with smaller groups. Prior to any shore excursion there was a comprehensive briefing to supplement the hand-out information in their booklets. The crew were very accommodating, the entertainment good without being too elaborate and every aspect of the service was first class. Read Less

We are interested in this part of the world due to our heritage and were very excited to see all the delightful tour spots. We also met up with our high school foreign exchange student from 50 years ago in Bergen Norway. We loved every minute of the cruise and everything on board the ship was just perfect. You could not ask for better facilities. The food is just terrific in every way and delicious. From the more formal dining restaurants to the World Cafe, you always receive a fantastic meal. All the crew is top notch in every regard and always gave the most gracious service for any and every request. I love the way they remember your name. Our only regret is that we did not have more time in Berlin. I guess we are going to have to go back! The Soviet Flashback tour was a unique eyeopening and informational event as well as the most entertaining day. That was our favorite tour. We also were so fortunate to have dinner at the Captain's Table which was a real treat. And our cruise director Beven Addinsall was terrific! We also appreciated and feel so fortunate to have received the opportunity to upgrade our room just prior to the cruise. It really made a difference in our comfort level and total experience. We are looking forward to our next cruise to Egypt this September! Read Less

We chose the Viking Sea because we really liked the itinerary and had never sailed on Viking before. Our previous river cruising has been on Uniworld and Avalon. Trying the Viking ocean experience was a change for us. Embarkation in Bergen was easy and we were so impressed once we got on the ship. It is just lovely. Our stateroom was a PV1-Penthouse Veranda suite on deck 5 and it was great. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage. Our only issue was with our shower head. It kept sliding down the pole and would not stay in place. We told our cabin steward and he had a plumber take a look at it...didn't fix it though...it was a pain to take a shower. Our cabin stewards were fantastic...Niko and Ariel were some of the best we've ever had. The laundromat onboard was a great perk. It was free to use and they also provided laundry detergent. Viking touts the free beer and wine with meals. What they don't tell you, is if you order a drink during lunchtime hours in The Living Room where they have muffins, small plates and various snacks to choose from, they will ask you for your room number and you get charged. They don't specify that you need to be in the dining room, buffet or one of the specialty restaurants. Sorry, but I think that's petty. The food overall was good. We enjoyed Manfredi's very much. The waffle with berries in Mamsen's was great. The buffet was good but some of the food servers could use an attitude adjustment....it costs nothing to smile. We ordered room service breakfast several times and have no complaints. One day from 9 AM-1PM they put on an amazing brunch in the Wintergarden area. It was a sight to behold. You could tell a TON of work went into planning and executing it! Our biggest disappointment was the lack of interesting (for us) entertainment. The enrichment seminars were never ending. The lack of varied entertainment was glaring. The best show we saw starred the Cruise Director...singing. During this cruise I read 3 books and took naps (which I rarely do) out of boredom in the afternoons. The included shore excursions were just okay. We loved the tour in Lerwick, Scotland but thought the included excursion in Reykjavik was awful. The first place our German tour guide took us was to a ditch where women washed clothes 100 years ago......zzzz Based on our experience on the Viking Sea, we don't feel we got the value for the amount of money we spent on this cruise. For the amount spent, we can get a Neptune suite on HAL along with many more activities. Read Less

In the Wake of the Vikings - Ocean Cruise (Sep 2018) Sep 01 - SAN DIEGO - FRANKFURT * Flew on Lufthansa First Class (excellent service) * Arrived in Frankfurt and was met at the plane with a wheel chair for Glenn and full assistance transporting us to our departure gate. (Excellent service) Had a couple of hours layover in Frankfurt. Ate lunch at airport. Sep 02 - FRANKFURT - OSLO * Flew to Oslo, Norway (short flight) * Our arrival was late afternoon. * Transfer from Airport to Hotel - provided by Viking - Private Mercedes Benz Limo. * Joe Christian was our driver. (Exceptional service) * Hotel was excellent. * Due to our arrival in the early evening our visit to Oslo was limited. Sep 03 - OSLO - BERGEN * Breakfast at hotel (Food was delicious, procedure for seating in dining room was chaotic) * Transfer from Hotel to Train Station via included Bus tour of Oslo - (Tour Guide was very good) * Train to Bergen - There was confusion regarding the seating on the train. * (The arrangement for lunch on board was unexpected, but the boxed food was hot and good) * Transfer from Train Station to Hotel did not go well. (Guide was late, unapologetic and very unprepared. * Bus driver and passengers were kept waiting with no explanation from the Guide). * Hotel was excellent. We had dinner in the bar as the dining room was full. Sep 04 - BERGEN * Breakfast at hotel (excellent) * Transfer to from Hotel to Ship via included Bus Tour of Bergen did not go well. * Tour Guide was not organized, very difficult to understand. * We literally drove in circles and passed the same locations two and three times. As a result we were not able to spend sufficient time at the Gamle Bergen Open Air Museum * Tour Guide did not clearly point out the difficulty of negotiating the open air museum to our physically challenged passengers. * This included tour has the potential to be so much better. Sep 05 - BERGEN * Breakfast on Ship * We chose to walk on our own from Ship to Funicular in the morning * Strolled through town back to ship seeing some sites along the way * Set sail in the evening for Lerwick, Shetland Islands (UK) Sep 06 - LERWICK - SHETLAND ISLANDS * We chose to skip the tours and took a shuttle bus from the dock to Downtown Lerwick. * We strolled the streets and enjoyed our visit. Sep 07 - TORSHAVN - FAROE ISLANDS ALTERNATE PORT - KOLLAFJORDUR * Our cruise hit a major snag here. After the Captain docked, he was informed by the port authority that we could not dock there. Apparently the dock was double booked and our ship eventually (after 2 hours of discussions) had to relocate to another port on the island. * After relocating we were finally able to disembark and take a two hour bus tour of the area. OK but nothing to write home about. Captain to be commended for his handling of the situation. * Sad thing was the town of Torshavn lost out on our visit entirely. And some of the tours had to be cancelled. * The alternate port was nothing more than a dock and no village. * Very disappointed that none of us were able to visit Torshavn due to the dispute with the port. Sep 08 - AT SEA Sep 09 - REYKJAVIK, ICELAND * We docked without incident at this port. * Glenn took a bus tour of the city. * Pat went to the Blue Lagoon. Very well done with one exception - we were told to bring a towel with us to the lagoon. However when we arrived at the lagoon we were informed that towels were provided as part of our tour package. * This was the only port of call where some of us encountered rain. Sep 10 - AT SEA Sep 11 - NANORTALIK, GREENLAND (aborted) ALTERNATIVELY - AT SEA * Due to bad weather conditions in the area it was decided to skip this port and continue to Qaqortoq, Greenland. * As a result we had an extra day at sea. * Because we had the time the captain took us through a couple of magnificent fiords on the way. Sep 12 - QAQORTOQ - GREENLAND * We woke up this morning in this charming village community. * We tendered in. * We opted out of any tours and wandered around the village on our own. * Viking did an excellent job of greeting us on shore. * The weather was picture perfect. Sep 13 - AT SEA Sep 14 - L’ANSE AUX MEADOWS, NEWFOUNDLAND (aborted) ALTERNATE PORT - SAINT ANTHONY, NEWFOUNDLAND * Due to dangerous weather conditions in the area we continued to an alternate port, St. Anthony, which proved to be a delightful and very friendly community. * Glenn stayed on board the ship. * I took a tender into town and did a lot of walking, exploring and hiking. * Another picture perfect day for weather. * This port should be on the itinerary Sep 15 - AT SEA Sep 16 - SAGUENAY, QUEBEC, CANADA * The scenery as we left the Seaway and went up the river to Saguenay was beautiful. * We arrived in the morning to great fanfare. Several of the town folk came to the dock to greet us with dancing and music. * Upon arrival we were taken in busses to a very large auditorium for a major theatrical production. Excellent. * The port provided wheel chair and electric cart service for the physically challenged from and to the ship. * The transfer from ship to theater and back to dock was a bit chaotic, but short. * Back on board we freshened up, had lunch and then did some walking along the harbor. * Our ship had the best docking location. * There were three other ships in port at the same time and they all had to tender in. * Crew and Staff were on shore to welcome us back to ship with music and champagne! * Another picture perfect day for weather. Sep 17 - QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC, CANADA * Pat toured the town on his own including a trip on the funicular and coffee and sandwich at Starbucks. * Glenn took a guided bus tour of the city. Excellent Tour and Tour Guide. * We did not get the ideal docking position but there was a shuttle that transferred us between ship and the city. * We felt that an overnight with an extra day in Quebec City would have been preferred. * Another picture perfect day for weather. Sep 18 - MONTREAL * Arrived in Montreal. Disembarkation went very well. Viking Staff there to help and give directions inside the Terminal. * Short Transfer to Hotel via a large van. * Settled into the Westin hotel and began our explorations on our own. * No included tours here. * We had lunch and dinner at the hotel. * The Hotel and Dining Room was excellent. Sep 19 - MONTREAL - Extended stay * Enjoyed our included breakfast at the Hotel. * We set out on our own and toured the city including a visit to the Bank of Montreal and Notre Dame Basilica. * As suggested by the Hotel concierge we had an excellent lunch at the Portus 360 revolving restaurant with commanding views of the city. * We then continued exploring the city on foot, including a visit to St. Patrick’s Basilica and the Olympic Monument. * We attended the night show AURA at Notre Dame Basilica followed by a delicious dinner back at the hotel. This should be highly recommended to all clients in advance so as to get a seat. Very popular. Reservations should be made well in advance. We purchased our tickets on line from home before the trip. Sep 20 - MONTREAL - PHILADELPHIA - SAN DIEGO * Enjoyed our included breakfast at the Hotel. * After breakfast Pat took one last walk through Montreal Old Town * We had a private included transfer from Hotel to Airport in the afternoon * Flight was late leaving Montreal - no one at the airport kept us informed * Arrived in Philadelphia and was met at the plane with a wheel chair for Glenn and full assistance transporting us to our departure gate. (Excellent service) * Arrived in San Diego late at night and took cab home. The ship - Viking Sea * It is important to note that there was a serious problem on board this ship. Based on our own personal experience and conversations with some of the passengers - there is a noise problem that needs to be addressed. * Our cabin, 4084, was so noisy we could not sleep at night. * We invited engineering into 4084 so they could hear the noise as well and they did. Not at all clear what the cause was but it was intermittent and even occurred when the ship was not moving. It was a very loud booming sound and vibrated one wall in the cabin. * After two nights in that cabin - Viking relocated us to cabin 5026 which was identical to 4084 except without any noise. * The staff was excellent. The public areas were comfortable. * Attention to detail could be better. Example: the tile floor in the World Cafe is chipped and cracked in places and the grouting appears dirty. Food Service & Entertainment * Food on board the ship in the main dining room and the World Cafe was creative and delicious. The food was not often hot and only mildly warm. Warm plates were offered as an alternative to the cold plates under the counters at the buffet. This needs attention and better notice. * For one of the meals in the main Dining Room Glenn had to ask the waiter for a replacement of the main course as the one delivered was barely warm. * Meals were creative, excellent presentation and flavorful. * Eric, the maitre’d, was outstanding. He was attentive and helpful. Prior to the cruise we were not able to get an earlier seating in the Chefs Table and Manfredi’s restaurants. Eric took care of that and we were able to dine earlier. * The Pool Grill provided nice simple options for meals. * The waffles in Mamsen’s were outstanding. * Both Alternative Dining Rooms were excellent. Service excellent and food excellent. * Wintergarden Afternoon Tea very well done. * The Afternoon Brunch in the Wintergarden was outstanding. They did run out of some of the items too soon. * Table 131 in the main Restaurant is a very bad table to sit at. There are glaring fluorescent lights from the kitchen area visible in parts of the dining area. Recommend a modification so the light is not visible to guests. * Entertainment on board was good. Drew, the Cruise Director, was amazing. His ability to sing, play musical instruments and his knowledge of the ports we visited - incredible. Read Less

2 years ago we chose this cruise to followed the path my ancestors( Vikings) took to discover the North American continent. This cruise took us to places that most people will never visit. The cruise introduced us to a world of harsh weather conditions with unique beautiful landscapes, and lots of sheep! We chose a three day extension on the front end of this cruise to explore Iceland. We were put up in an excellent hotel (Hilton) and the included tours, golden circle, blue lagoon and Reykjavík tours allowed us to see many of the top ten sights when visiting Iceland. Flights, transfers were all handled professionally. Next we flew on to Bergen, Norway, our port for embarkation. We were in Bergen two days allowing a complete tour of the local area. The included tour gave us a great view of Bergen. We signed up for an optional tour to go to the top of Mount Floien. This tour was a little disappointing as half of the tour completely overlapped the included tour. We would have better served to have just walked off the ship and to the funicular, bought a ticket and gone to Mount Floien on our own, definitely not worth the extra cost. This was our first Viking Ocean Cruise so being on their ship was a new unique experience. The ship was beautiful throughout with only 900 passengers. Our cabin, a penthouse suite, was very comfortable throughout the cruise. Our cabin staff was absolutely outstanding, we were treated great. The dining options on the ship again were fantastic. Many daily options with changing menus allowed a new dining experience at every meal and the food was fabulous. Again the waiters and waitresses were excellent. We were amazed how they all knew our names by the second day. The specialty restaurants, Manfredi’s and Chef’s Table both had unique menus. Manfredi’s an Italian cuisine had many terrific dishes to choose from. The Chef’s Table was a uniques dining experience with a changing menu every 3 or 4 days. This restaurant was a set five course meal. While unique and things we normally wouldn’t eat the portions were kinda tiny. During the entire cruise multiple educational seminar were offered by four different professors on a full range of Viking and Country specific topics. We found these seminars excellent and made days at sea flow quickly. In addition, the professional entertainment in the evenings far exceeded our expectations. Throughout the cruise we utilized the spa facilities to workout, utilize the saunas and cold room and the hot tubs. We found these excellent. Finally we utilized some spa services and found these enjoyable. During our cruise we found the included tours at each port to be very good. On the Shetland Islands and Faroe Islands we signed up for optional tours to try to see more of these islands while we were there. While these tours (North Shore of the Shetlands) and (The Island of Vagar) on the Faroe were interesting, both of these tours repeated the included tours taken in the morning, so in the future we will be more careful what optional tours we select. On this trip it was just myself and my spouse, no kids, in fact there were no kids on this cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise on a Viking ocean ship after many cruises on Holland America and several on Oceana and the entire cruise was excellent. Our stateroom on deck 6 was a good size with lots of storage space. The selection of shore excursions was quite good and this was a big concern with us as we have been spoiled with the Holland America shore trips selections over the years. The food is very good and the service was outstanding. We like the concept of no broadway shows, no casinos, and no one under 18 years old. Overall Viking is very well organized for embarkation and extremely well organized on disembarkation. The only issue was the immigration folks in Bergen, Norway who were very slow. Viking uses Bergen as its headquarters we believe so they need to exert influence on the Norway officials. The Viking Sea is a very nice, modern ship and Viking obviously did their homework before launching it. There are lots of nice public areas. Their World Cafe is well organized with very few lines to get served. The other great point compared to other cruise lines is that they don't "nickle and dime" you to death. There is free WiFi, free water when going ashore, free wine and beer with lunch and dinner, no charge for the specialty restaurants, ability to bring a bottle of wine on board from shore trips at no charge, one included shore trip at each port, and wonderful staff. We chose this cruise because we had never previously been to Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Shetland Islands, or Faroe Islands. We learned so much about the Viking influences on these places, and enjoyed surprisingly good, sunny weather. The only disappointment was not seeing the Northern Lights, but it was probably the wrong time of year. Even when turbulent seas prevented landing in one port, it seemed that the staff went "overboard" to increase activities and food choices that day. We continually recommend Viking because of the service, attentiveness, and informative shore excursions. We like the fact that there is an included excursion in each port, with additional options in some places. Also, the included wine and beer with lunch and dinner is a plus, but additional beverage packages are also available. My advice to smart consumers is to become a repeat customer, as the perks are enviable. Additionally, the Viking Ocean liners hold about 930 passengers, with the amazing spa areas including hot bathing, snow room and sauna. Try them, you will like them! Read Less

Fantastic dining, fabulous musicians (Viking Trio). Outstanding excursions and itinerary. Comfortable stateroom. Viking ocean exceeded our expectations. Having been on more than a dozen cruises, we are pretty hard to impress. The Dining Room manager more than accommodated vegetarian menu requests by having a vegetarian "soup for one" prepared every night for dinner. He also worked with the chef to create entrees that were unusual. Menu diversity is generally limited on cruises, not true on Viking Star. The Chef and staff went above and beyond to meet our requests. Cabin life was comfortable, storage was limited but once we organized ourselves it was comfortable. I really loved the cashmere throws available on the bed and in public spaces to help ward of any chill. The Viking Trio was outstanding. Their performances were wonderful. The variety of music from a string trio was exceptional. The group members were personable and made the evenings very enjoyable. We hope to see them again on future cruises. The Baltic region is magical. We booked the 2 day pre cruise in Oslo and the accommodations were great, the staff were fantastic and the train was a wonderful experience. We highly recommend Viking Ocean to our fellow cruisers. Read Less

There were so many interesting locations to view and visit while enjoying luxurious service, dining and comfort. Viking spoils their passengers. Service is impeccable and wonderful selection of restaurants onboard. Cabin service is excellent, from cleanliness to accommodation. This was my fourth trip with Viking River and Ocean cruise and I’m now planning my fifth. Viking makes traveling so easy for you by collecting you at the airport and retuning for your flight home. It’s obvious Viking takes the time to properly train their employees. I actually walked into my once and found someone cleaning under my bed. You’ll find from the stewards, bartenders, servers will help you with anything you ask. The concierge will go out of their way to grant any request you have. Viking has wonderful entertainment. From dancing, singing, comedy etc. to a large current selection of movie and tv programs. After a day of fascinatingly excursions it’s nice to have dinner in or out of your room and then relax with a movie. Again, I’ll say Viking absolutely spoils their guests. Read Less

Past good experience with Viking so wanted to take this cruise with them. This was our 1st ocean cruise with them, previously 3 river cruises. As previously the ships are spotless, with a friendly, helpful and polite crew. Cabins were excellent and cabin boys very helpful. The food was excellent, especially the 2 "speciality" restaurants, again wait staff very friendly, helpful, and efficient. Ample food selection. Entertainment was very good but did not attend many lectures. The shore excursions were well organized, with knowledgeable guides, the only negative being the 3 hour (each way) train trip to visit Berlin. Given the experience we have already booked our next ocean cruise - "Empires of the Mediterranean"; however, due to the popularity of Viking cruises, this cruise will only be in 2020 as all 2019 cruises for this itinerary were sold out by September 2018! Given our experiences with Viking cruises, we would definitely recommend any of their cruises, though the accomadation on the Mekong River cruise was a little sparse. Read Less

Viking is the best in every way: accommodations, excursions, food, service, transfers & crew. We met & dined with many friendly & interesting people from all over the world. The excursions were well organized & the tour guides knowledgeable & friendly as well. Cabins were kept clean daily with replenishment of fridge daily as well. Plenty of room/space with a nice balcony. Room service was a plus & breakfast came promptly at our requested time. Plenty of joices & not limited to breakfast. Even had drinks delivered to our room so we could sit on the balcony & enjoy the view. We had the drink package which is a definite must. Another plus is booking the next cruise while on the ship. You get discounts on both the current cruise & the next one. Also, get extended time to pay for next cruise & can change up to 4 months prior to the cruise. Read Less

I selected the trip because friends were going-I hadn't been to many of the ports for many years and I had heard great things about Viking.I have traveled on many cruises from Seaborn to Princess including Regent and Oceania which is why I placed Viking in the middle. Many aspects were good- it is a lovely vessel- spa is wonderful- while many aspects of the trip were poor. If you didn't take an excursion, there was NOTHING to do on the ship; the food was erratic- some meals were excellent and some awful (my chicken was too dry to swallow); the music was good; two of the three enrichment lecturers were excellent but the third was a shill for products she had brought on board for sale. The excursions were alright- don't expect much from the free included ones- they are mainly walking tours. The others are alright and of course they varied but in general the guides were good. Problem is that they push tours and there is nothing to do on board if you don't take a tour. No large tables for dining so you sat with your companion and didn't get to meet anyone else. Fine for couples but not good for singles and there was only one singles mixer which wasn't enough. Staff was gracious and of course differed in experience level; customer service desks were excellent but there was no purser. Just a litany of small issues caused me to rate them only average. With all I had heard, I wish I could do better, but I can't. I won't travel with them again because there are many better options on the water-ways. Read Less

The crew and staff were especially consistent in delivering quality, friendly, help and service, job well done. The disembarking needs help. It is not acceptable to be required to be ready to leave the ship so early. 5:15AM. Please improve this! This alone prevents me from making the overall rating more than 4 stars. The bar and food were excellent along with the servers were the highlight of the 14 day cruise. I especially enjoyed the lunch selections and environment on the aft of the ship. The fresh immediate preparation of the food, especially the salmon and shrimp were grilled and fabulous. The facilities; spa, thermal facilities, lounges, seating areas were very well done. The atmosphere and decor are crisp and fashionable, but not gaudy or over done and you might see in other cruise lines. The upper decks had snack areas and desert areas that complemented the bar and seating areas for a very relaxed and comfortable trip. Thank you. Fix the untimely debarking times! Read Less

This cruise visited six countries we had never visited. Our cabin was beautiful and as nice as any hotel we have ever stayed in. Our room stewards, Adi and Mohammed, must have been the best Viking had to offer. Each day when we returned to our cabin, it was spotless and everything that needed restocking was restocked. The food at Chef's Table and Manfredis was great and the World Cafe and The Restaurant were equally delicious. Shore excursions were efficiently executed with mostly good guides. Each one that was included or we chose was informative and worthwhile. Most of the guides spoke decent English and were knowledgeable. We were very impressed with the elevators--never waited more than 30 seconds. We never wanted to take an ocean cruise because we figured everything we wanted to do would involve waiting--but we were so happy with the efficiency of Viking. The crew was A+. I think Viking should market their training program. The crew was friendly, attentive and helpful. (but not "smarmy"). The entertainment was geared to many different age groups and interests. Our cruise director, Heather, could have a top-rated talk show. If we did not attend her port talks, whey were posted on TV later. I could go on, but briefly, it was exceptional. Read Less

We just returned from the Viking Homelands cruise on the Viking Sky. It was our first Viking experience. We have become Viking fans and won’t be cruising on other lines if Viking goes where we want to go. Here are some of the things that stood out: • The crew was fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble. Most had university degrees in some hospitality related area. From the Captain on down, they would greet guests in the passageways. I saw a Commander (3 stripes) stop and pick up a tiny piece of paper and put it in the trash. • Attention to detail was amazing. • The food was amazing. Even the buffet, aka World Café, was great. Nothing on the buffet was ever “tired.” Much was made to order, such as pasta dishes, cut to order prime rib, One night we had lobster tail, filet mignon, and prime rib. It was not a free for all like the buffets on other lines. The Restaurant, the main restaurant, was really nice and had great service. • Passengers seemed friendlier. I think that rubbed off of the crew being so friendly. Most other passengers had been on river cruises. (We go next year.) • The organization of everything, from embarkation to excursions, to disembarkation and busses to the airport (airport transfer after disembarkation was included,) was impressive. • Great coffee at the bar in the Living Room on Deck 1. It opened at 6:30am, but if you got there early, Kamdesh, the barista was more than happy to make your favorite drink, which he knew. I’d sit and read the news on my Surface computer and watch him greet passengers by name and make “the usual” for all of them. His memory was uncanny. • The included excursions were very good. I had no idea how beautiful Norway is or how great a city St. Petersburg could be. St. Petersburg should have been a bucket list item. Who knew? Internet was included, but a little slow. 2 Mbs down and a respectable 8 up. We gave entertainment 3 stars, except when the cruise director, Heather, sang, it was amazing. Sara Brightman has nothing on Heather's voice. Amazing. We’re looking forward to next July for the Grand European river cruise. Read Less

My wife and I have long looked forward to doing the 'Viking Homelands Cruise', and were able to do so on the Viking Sky starting on the 18th August 2018. After a somewhat disappointing Cruise on the same ship from Montreal to New York in 2017, we eventually decided that it was worth another try in its own ‘Homeland’ region of the world. Our hopes were validated, and indeed we were thrilled by the whole experience this time. From our welcome aboard in Bergen, to our departure in Stockholm, there were so many pleasant occasions that it was hard to pick a favourite day on the cruise. Our Stateroom, as in the past was excellent, and the service of our stewards, Honey and Aji, was beyond reproach. In addition, Room Service from the ship’s kitchens always appeared at the requested times. The quality of food in multiple locations was of a high standard, and there was such a variety of food offered in each, that it would be hard to imagine anyone but the most fussy being disappointed. My favourite was at Manfredi’s, while my wife always enjoyed lunch in the Explorers Lounge. Cheerful waiters were always nearby with an extra wine or beer. The ‘new’ Sunday Brunch was an exciting occasion. Such a variety of foods in brilliant settings, left you almost overwhelmed, and made it almost impossible to know where to start. I have never seen so many surprised people walking around in awe and wonder at the splendour of the occasion. Our Shore excursions were always well organised, and information sessions the day before were always entertaining and enlightening. We attended most of the ‘included’ tours, and generally enjoyed them, though we found that our interest and enthusiasm was on occasion measured by the local Tour Guides who ranged from excellent to fair. Paid Excursions were well planned and generally excellent, with very sound knowledge and a pleasant delivery by our Guides. As always, the standard of Buses was both consistent and reliable. Entertainment is always a subjective area, where everyone has a different opinion. As Director, Heather Clancy was the gel that made everything work. Her effervescent nature, and approachable personality made you always feel that you were getting a highly professional performance from the various artists. The Viking Sky band, as in the past, proved to be extremely talented, though the four young ‘show’ entertainers needed a little more experience, but were so enthusiastic, you could not fail to feel their drive and vitality. Their stature will grow with time, while their stagecraft was very professional. Our Captain could be seen around the ship, and was both approachable and sensible in the way he thought of his passengers and crew. This was indeed a rewarding experience, and credit must go to all on the Viking Sky for presenting such an improved benchmark of efficiency. Read Less

The ship & crew were wonderful. The ship was beautiful. There were many places to sit & relax. Our cabin was outstanding, loved all the room & views. The dining experience was unique with a great deal of variety. The captain made sure we were aware of unusual & special sights, moved the ship as close as possible to a Waterfall & over all was the most smooth journey. The entertainment was great. We wanted to dance in the aisles. The shore excursions were interesting. The embarkation & disembaration was effortless. Everyday, the crew made sure you were aware of where we were & the important points of interest. The crew was so caring & professional. Loved the whole experience.Have recommended this trip to everyone. Will travel on Viking again & again. Please keep the ship small & personable. We loved our days in St. Petersburg. Our guide was the best. Read Less

We were interested in the ports in the itinerary (several in Noreay, Denmark, Germany, Poland, St. Petersburg Russia, Estonia, and Sweden) and we had gotten a great recommendation from friends on the quality of the Viking Ocean cruises. We particularly enjoyed the several stops in Norway. Other highlights: Helsinki was lovely. We visited the Stutthof Concentration Camp near Gdańsk, Poland. St. Petersburg was absolutely amazing. Excursions were well run, and the local guides were terrific. We enjoyed dining options aboard the ship, none with an extra cost. There is 24 hour room service available, also at no charge. Free internet worked well throughout the ship. Viking also provides free internet to the crew, unlike other cruise lines, which allows them to stay in touch with family during time away from home. The crew were all terrific, and provided a high level of service. Common areas were expansive and never crowded. We enjoyed our trip so much that we have booked another Viking cruise for next year. A number of our group had been on a Viking river cruise and had enjoyed it so much they recommended we do the Viking Homelands (Baltic) Cruise. A great suggestion and choice for 16 friends. As our first cruise this cruise turned out to be beyond expectation and an unforgettable experience. The service, amenities and shore excursions were excellent. The food was amazing and the Viking entertainment top class. We were treated like VIPs during the duration of the cruise. The state room we had on deck three was very well appointed and extremely comfortable. The ports and countries visited were really well chosen and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits to each one. The trip to Berlin with the Viking train was amazing and on returning we experienced a poolside party and entertainment. The ship also put on a Sunday brunch which again was a culinary experience. There were many memories with the splendour of St. Petersburg, magical Bergen and Eidfjord in Norway, just to mention but a few. Thank you to the Captain and crew of the Viking Sky. In naval terms a very well run ship. As a result of our first Viking experience, we have booked our Oberammergau 2020 River Cruise and a 2021, 21 day Mediterranean Cruise, with Viking. Read Less

I wanted to see my homeland of Scotland and Ireland. With the highlight of the trip being two days in London. We pre-toured in Oslo with a train ride to Bergin, fantastic. We finished the cruise with three days in Edenborough, again a fantastic stay. The tours from the ship were not of the caliper of previous voyages with Viking. We were driven by museums and castles, and told that if we had more time we could go in. For a few dollars more tickets to castles and museums could have been purchased and that cost past on to the consumer (me) as part of the cost of the cruise. The crew was fantastic, I am amazed that they can remember the names of all the customers. On our first night in the Restaurant, out server introduced herself and then responded that she had met us before. She was correct, she was working on our previous cruise. To myself and other guests that I spoke to, a big disappointment was planning on two days in London. We were hoping to see the sights and felt cheated that London (Greenwich) was only a convenient Disembarkation / Embarkation point that the customer only had a few hours to visit. Embarkation left a lot to be desired, too many buses going to the airport for the transition to Edinburgh, and to many flights to the next destination. The Viking Travel people did not include a baggage allowance for the flight, we and other customers had to pay the fee out of pocket. Recommendation: Make the ride to the airport a city tour, explain what we are seeing and take a roult that would allow the customers to at least see London if not able to experience London. Instead of using the airlines, send the customer from London to Edinburgh by train, it would have been a 3 hour trip, we would have seen the country and Viking could have reserved an entire car. The Viking Air people on this trip did not seam to be engaged in the product Viking was selling. Twice I had to contact them to issue tickets from London for the extention in Edenburgh. I am looking forward to a river cruise in 2020, not sure if I will due another ocean cruise. Read Less

Viking really knows how to delight their customers. This British Isles Cruise was a bit of heaven on earth. Cabins and amenities are excellent and all personnel are more than accommodating with a solution to most any situation in which you find yourself. Food was excellent in variety and quality. Especially like being able to go to specialty restaurants free of charge. Wines were very good and as much as you want with your dinners. Shore excursions were interesting and enriching with multiple options selection of ports was also fantastic and many are a part not normally included in British Isles excursions. Entertainment onboard was also very good and relatable to the average age on board. Spa amenities are also really luxurious and great. I especially loved the Explorer’s Lounge for viewing coming in to and leaving ports. Launderettes were also a little welcome luxury. Wish I could have stayed another week Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We wanted to go to Scotland, Ireland and Wales and this cruise offered it all. The best thing about the cruise was the staff. It was the most competent, caring, friendly and attentive staff we have ever experienced. Next, the ship is beautiful. The design, the furniture, the stateroom layout and all the appointments are very well done. We were very happy to have been upgraded to a penthouse veranda which is quite a bit larger than the deluxe veranda. The food was plentiful and very good. We loved the sushi. We actually preferred the Restaurant and the buffet to the specialty restaurants. The entertainment was perfect, and it was nice to see the performers around the ship. They were always out there right after the shows. It was just right and not over the top. We also enjoyed all the shore excursions, always wishing there were more time in each port. Judy did an amazing job with her organization of the shore excursions. We were less impressed with the pre and post excursions. We did not realize that Viking farmed these out to other companies. The pre excursion in Oslo offered nothing except a hotel room and train ride. No effort was made to contact the participants and by the time we saw the Viking desk there was no reason to even check in. All they did was give info regarding tours that were available at an extra cost. The post excursion in Edinburgh at least offered some interesting excursions which were included. A meeting was held when we arrived and information was dispersed. Pick up and drop off at the airport was totally inadequated. Our pickup person was 15 minutes late and no one knew what to do. Our drop off was not near the entrance to the airport and we had to drag our luggage quite a ways. All in all, we would no consider any pre or post excursions in the future. Read Less
