Great experiences previously with Viking River Cruises and wanted to try their ocean small ships. This ship was 4 times larger than the Viking longships, but we never felt crowded. There were so many places to find a quiet spot to hang out, it felt like a private resort. Spa was excellent with full use of hydro therapy circuit at no additional charge. Food was excellent. Never had to wait for anything with open seating. Main dining room was large and fairly noisy. We we traveling as a group of nine and found the World Cafe buffet dining to be more than suitable for our group. Infinite choices, never rushed, attentive service by staff at all times. Explorers Lounge on top deck was wonderful place to sit and have a snack/drink at any time of day. Never crowded. All staff were excellent. Never without a smile on their face and showed true desire to meet your needs. Including the captain who was happy to stop and talk while walking his rounds on deck. We loved the experience and have already booked our 2020 Viking cruise from Bali to Sidney. Can't wait to go! Read Less

My husband had never been interested in cruising after spending a substantial amount of time on Navy ships, but he wanted to see Alaska. Years ago we made a deal that we would take an Alaskan cruise; we figured it was a good way to try cruising and “checking the Alaska box” for him at the same time. We have a few friends that have cruised on Viking, and it definitely sounded more of the kind of cruising experience we were looking for, with it’s smaller ships, ”all inclusive” cruises. We were not disappointed! Once we arrived at Anchorage airport, Viking took care of everything from that moment until we boarded our plane for home in Vancouver almost two weeks later (we purchased the post cruise package as well). Most days we either did the included excursions or set out on our own with third party excursion companies. We also loved our days at sea, and spent many hours on the top deck of the ship just watching the world go by. We are pretty casual people, and ate most of our meals at World Cafe (the buffet restaurant). We did try all the others; we had dinner at Mamsen’s and the Chef’s Table, and it was very good. We went to The Restaurant once, but we really liked the spontaneity and quick turn-around of walking into the World Cafe and serving ourselves (and the food was excellent, by the way). The service was excellent, and the staff was so helpful. Our steward, Burhan, was friendly and helpful and always seemed happy to see us. Bottom line: we loved it. The only thing we might do differently is pick a few more “active” activities (or set out on our own) as we are pretty active and healthy, and some of the excursions which are geared to all levels felt a bit “slow” for us. But that’s understandable and a simple “lesson learned” on our part. Back to my husband and his skepticism about cruising - he loved it, and we are booked for our second cruise (first river cruise) in October, traveling from Amsterdam to Basel on the Rhine River. We are also looking ahead to several other possible destinations (both ocean and river). I just can’t decide where to go next! Read Less

Alaska still holds, for travellers, the experience of the Great Outdoors of wild forests, mountain sky lines, fast and slow flowing water ways. Wild life abounds in their natural habitat that will hold you in that moment. Spend your leisure time in local restaurants and saloons passing the time with the local people. Sunrise and Sunsets make many photo opportunities. We took the before and after extensions. This gave us "Alaskan Wilderness Express" rail journey to the Denali National Park. Then on by coach over land with well appointed Hotel accommodation to Seward. Our extended stay in Vancouver which allowed to us unwind before the flight home. Viking Orion we found to be such a relaxing ship to cruise on. The service by all the staff and crew was absolutely outstanding. The entertainment felt soft and intimate around the bars. Talented show artists gave excellent performances across all styles of entertainment. The Night Club Torshavn will complete your day. You will find food that covers all appetites. The Viking name has been synonymous with excellence. We were so happy when they announced they were sailing in Alaska. It was our dream come true! This was a special cruise for my husband’s 70th and his retirement. Everything and everyone on this ship exceeded our expectations. The twice a day housecleaning made it that more special. The dining was easy and never included lines for buffet and we always got into the Restaurant with a group of six. We appreciate that Viking ocean cruises require passengers to be 18 or older. Our one included shore excursion at Icy Strait was not of the caliber that I expected. High school students performing a story was sweet but wasn’t what was described in material. We did enjoy the nightly entertainment and noticed all the entertainers participated almost every morning in the disembarkation and return to ship by handing out water, towels etc. I can’t wait to go on another cruise. Hopefully we will be in France river cruise in two years. Read Less

Many of our friends had recommended a cruise of the Alaskan inner passage, sharing their experiences with enthusiasm. Some had sailed with Viking and were very impressed. We looked into available sailing dates and found an ideal match for our summer travel plans. From the time we walked into the airport lobby in Anchorage, we knew this was going to be an experience to remember. Every detail of transportation from getting to the ship to excursions at every port, then including at the last port in Vancouver CA was very well organized. The staff was professional, understandable, and "in charge" the whole time. On board, the ship was immaculate, our state room was spacious, bright and well appointed. We enjoyed practically all the activities that were available including learning about the local history and culture. Our on-shore excursions were also learning experiences. We saw breath-taking natural beauty, experienced the local art and cuisine, plus had a great thrill ride on the world's highest and longest zip ride. Our sailing experience was smooth and picturesque with beautiful vistas, sunsets, and calm seas. Of course the food was delicious and varied. Meeting others on the ship was fun and added to the spirit of adventure. What a trip! Read Less

I heard very good things about biking and wanted a cruise ship that did not have children. Our cruise to Alaska surpassed anything that we envisioned. The staff was incredible, very attentive to needs. It was one of the best vacations we have ever been on. The food was amazing, everyone in the staff was fabulous, and if the staff had allowed us to win The bean bag toss, it would have been perfect.lol! We were celebrating our anniversary, and it was made it into a very special occasion. The entertainment had very talented people, However what I liked most was lectures that they provided. There was a resident astronomer and a resident historian ho gave lectures that were incredibly interesting. We even got to look at the stars and planets through the Telescope that was on board. The singers in the lounge were absolutely incredible. Excursions were handled very well , and they were all well-planned and well-executed. We are planning on many more Viking Cruises. The Viking Cruise Line is highly recommended. Read Less

Always wanted to do an Alaska cruise. As this year was our 50TH wedding anniversary we chose to celebrate by going to Alaska with Viking. We were not disappointed. Overall I would rate the cruise as excellent. Up to Viking standards, we had gone on a Viking River cruise in 2014 and had a great time. Couple of things - the excursion included for the Rocky Narrows Point was a bit thin, the native dancers were great. The dinner island cruise was a disappointment, we were promised a gourmet feast, the food was OK but not gourmet and we had to ear at 4pm. Consider changing this to a lunch cruise. The extended stay in Anchorage at the Hilton was not up to Viking or Hilton standards, the hotel was old and tired and the hallways were dirty. When it was time to get off the ship we were told we had to have our bags out the night before. This was a major inconvenience -- put this in the information kit that we get before we leave for the cruise as it was a surprise. But overall we had a great time and Viking did a great jog, food was great, staff were excellent, lots of good memories. Read Less

The ship is lovely, public spaces really well designed, and many of them. Lecture program was outstanding, if anything there were too many different lectures but they covered every possible aspect of the areas we travelled through as well as very interesting space topics. Food varied. Loved Manfredis but not impressed either time we went to Chefs Table, mainly service rather than food, and cancelled our third booking. Every night the buffet featured Alaskan crab, plentiful and beautiful. We often called in there for a drink and a snack before going to the show. Food in The Restaurant varied, but there is an always available menu so could always find sonething to suit. Unl8ke some cruis3 lines with included drinks, drinks were very generous and filled often. Included shore excursions varied greatly, in some ports you were given tickets to the attractions, in others you had to pay for youself. All 5he 'better' excursions you had to pay for which I had not 3xpected when I booked. Our only complaint was the cabin. Based on the official Cruise Critic review we chose a deluxe balcony cabin which they had praised.. Never before have I had to keep delving into my suitcase for things that would not fit in the wardrobe. Deluxe bacony and balcony cabins in all grades are exactly the same, just in different positions on the ship. Storage space is woefully inadequate, one narrow full length hanging space and another half length. Unfortunately you had to reach over the bedside table to access the main wardrobe door which was very inconvenient. Bedside tables had one drawer and the rest was just space! Thankfully there were other two sets of drawers. Had a look at the Penthouse cabin, and although the wardrobe space there was also inadequate I would recommend going for this if you can manage it. We Carefully Choose viking Orion for our Alaska cruise when first available in 2016 because of ships open vista views and as a small ship also very importantly the itinerary and full package details . As our first Viking voyage we have been very satisfied and loved the ship it’s ambience decor space and lovely staff. With the amazing Alaskan scenery and fantastic wildlife and wilderness al around us we had one of our best ever holidays thank you viking, We started with a pre cruise in Vancouver lovely city, wonderful hotel by the bay , the pre cruise tour and lunch alfresco after boarding and sail out was lovely with seaplanes landing and taking off around us , and boats of all descriptions paddle steamers , sailing and small pleasure cruising craft to other ships then the cruise up the inside passage humpbacks sighting wonderful scenery sunsets and all enhanced by the ship! Really very good food right through the voyage onboard Orion majority of our meals we ate seafood,. Enjoyed all of the restaurants onboard, open seating only waited the once for a table but seated in restaurant reception with offers of drinks! There’s also a bar in the restaurant where you can have a pre dinner drinks . We enjoyed all our ports of calls and trips with only one complaint about the lunch on our Haines bear search and wildlife tour which was dealt with with a small refund to compensate however no bears seen but then that’s wildlife although we were probably not going to see any as Haines had hosted the state fair a few days earlier, trip highlights amazing Juneau glacier helicopter and dogsledding and glacier and whales trips , Valdez sail out amazing beautiful weather swimming in the infinity pool and hot tub and escorted out by high speed coast guard rigid inflatable with machine gun mounted and manned past all the Valdez salmon fishing fleets which were laying nets ! A James Bond moment! Dinner that evening a favourite with to start soft shell crab , lobster Thermidor and desert a lovely soufflé , with lovely wines and all made exceptional by Alaska delivering with beautiful scenery and Orca’s seen alongside during dinner !!! A Most memorable evening I must also thank the staff on Orion Nearly all were fantastic except for the future cruise lady? The shows on board such a small ship were all delivered by the Orion team and were excellent thank you to Jade And Karine and speedy and the viking band also bar waiters stewards Ivan and Corrinia ? Overall a fantastic holiday experience one of our very best highly recommend this voyage and ship if viking can keep price correct Read Less

After two river cruises we wanted to see Alaska. The Orion was like a large longboat, very familiar and comfortable but with room for many more amenities. We enjoyed the many lounge areas and dining choices. The spa was relaxing and invigorating and the gym was well equipped. The restaurants were well run, the food was excellent and the staff was incredible, always there when needed with a smile. There was always something to do if didn't want to stay in the room. Walking around the ship we always discovered something new, from the sports deck to the shops, the outdoor lounges, the Explorers Lounge, the atrium with its music and game tables, or just having a drink while watching the water. We wish we had been able to reserve more optional shore excursions but many had already been full. The embarkation and check in was lengthy but well organized. We had a quick meal and our luggage was waiting for us in our cabin. Disembarkation was also very organized and we were sorry to get on the bus to leave. Overall it was a very worthwhile trip in the Viking tradition. Read Less

The special restaurants were wonderful and we dined there more than once without a fee each time! The staff was very friendly and made a point to learn our names. The food was much better than the other 3 cruise lines we’ve been on. MUCH Having free on demand television with current movies and some of our favorite television programs like NCIS (all 3) was also a nice touch! They gave us a shore excursion at every port, it is nice to have but some were less than exciting and you still pay for anything decent. I was afraid I’d miss the entertainment as we have done many Disney cruises but we found plenty to do and the entertainment that was provided was excellent, we especially enjoyed the classical musicians. From the beginning embarkation and personnel were great, this was our first Viking ocean cruise, we had two river cruises and another Portugal river cruise with Viking coming this summer 2020. The ship Orion was spotless, the cabin steward was fantastic, always there and ready to serve our every request. The food was delicious and plentiful, the only concern I had was with the coffee service in the dining area, it was supposed to be fresh 24/7 but the first two mornings 5am they only had instant and expresso. I brought it to the attention of the supervisor and was remedied from then on and also received fresh coffee in our cabin the rest of the voyage. The ports and excursions were spot on, Alaska is beautiful, a bit to many Glaziers and Totem poles but the wild life is plentiful. My wife and I enjoy traveling and so far Viking meets all our expectations, We will definitely travel and recommend Viking to whoever inquires. Read Less

Friends invited us to join them on Inside Passage. We were reluctant since we had never been on a cruise. The trip surpassed all expectations. After spending four days in Vancouver, the departure city, we stepped aboard the Viking Orion for our first ever cruise and were greeted with a glass of champagne! A great way to start our experience. We met our friends for cocktails and dinner as our ship left shore for Alaska. The next day we spent discovering what was on the ship. The spot that became our afternoon favorite was the hidden coffee and pastry bar. Delightful after a day of shore exploring. Every crew member was friendly and eager to be of service. I had mentioned that I use soy milk/cream in my coffee. Miraculously, soy milk appear in our cabin fridge. Our verdana windows were cleaned daily so that nothing blurred our beautiful view each morning. Loved the World Cafe relaxed dining. Food from every part of the world was available and perfectly cooked. This is not just a buffet. Many selections were made to order. Alaska is stunning. Most of the places we visited could only be accessed from shore. The towns are quaint and full of history. It was a most relaxing vacation. Read Less

As soon as I heard Viking was going to Alaska we reserved our room. Alaska had been on my bucket list. We had enjoyed our river cruise down the Rhine. We were able to include an old friend and husband which enhanced our trip. Our room was perfect , comfortable, able to relax and every morning as we sailed into port I was on the balcony taking pictures and feeling in awe at the scenery. The food is tasty and the variety amazing.we dined at various restaurants and enjoyed them all. Every night we watched the entertainment and enjoyed it. It was geared to our age group. The excursions were informative and fun. I used the spa and enjoyed a massage and salon. We enjoyed cocktails at and listened to the music of violins and guitar. Very relaxing. The staff is Friendly, and enhance the trip. I am anxious to take our next cruise this summer. The common areas such as the main open area. Is divided into small intimate areas with comfortable chairs and tables. Very easy to converse with friends. There are constant activities on board and off. The daily news letter details the next days activities, weather, etc. every morning the activity director gave a detailed synopsis of pertinent information. The Television had constant weather and information as to where the ship was at that moment and the proposed destination for the day. The large assortment of food choices and food venues was impressive. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet most days but the dining room offered more formal dining. Everything was fastidiously clean. Even the balcony was washed daily. Every staff person talked to us in passing which impressed us. Returning to the ship after excursions involved security precautions which were impressive. Again can’t wait for our summer river cruise. At every cruise we take we include one or two add on excursions which greatly enhance our trip. Viking manages everything which means stress free traveling. The land and hotel accommodations have been five star. We have enjoyed our trips from start to finish. Read Less

Enjoyed the smaller cruise ship, because you got to know the other guests and seemed that you didn't have to rush to an event. It was wonderful to have an included tour of each port. After taking the city tour, later you you could go back to something that interested you. The only area that we felt needed was in the selection of extra tours. Because of the way these tours are assigned most of the tours are sold out before we were able to any of the tours. The process of assigning these tour by the among of money you spent for cabin. We have been a loyal guest of Viking for several trips and have two more scheduled this year, we feel that Viking could use the date the cruise was booked as fair system to assign these extar tours. So we said lets give a cruise with Viking a go! Wow, we were overly impressed about everything from boarding to disembarking on the last day. Our cabin was spectacular. Our dining experiences were splendid. We especially enjoyed the reservations required dining. The food was mouth watering the service was attentive and always seeking to please. Wanted to visit Alaska for years for the scenery. This cruise was everything we could have hoped for. We did a Rockies extension beforehand and that was a great idea as we made good friends on that part of the holiday who we were able to meet up with on the ship. Our stateroom was very roomy 8019 and we had complimentary laundry service which was very useful. Staff on board were brilliant and we can’t fault any aspect of the service. Food was excellent, although there could have been more variety of potatoes available at dinner. Attended two talks which were very interesting and a couple of shows in the theatre. Excursions were very good value for money and not too crowded. As usual they were well organised. An excellent cruise which enabled us to enjoy our holiday of a lifetime. We wanted to do the Inside Passage but we also wanted to combine with an inland tour. The Pristine Alaska Extension gave us the best of both worlds. From Fairbanks to Denali to Talkeetna and in-between, excellent tour with varied destinations. Some were a little tacky since so much of Alaska's commerce is cruise and tours. That was to be expected. The train ride between Fairbanks and Denali (Wilderness Express) was a wide eyed excursion that allowed us to see and hear about the topography, wildlife and history. What a wonderful way to ride in a domed railroad car! Other destinations were absolutely wonderful such as The Husky Homestead, Riverboat Discovery and The Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. Once on board Orion, the restaurants are varied and provide a client with an extensive array of food choices. Being gluten free myself, foods are labeled so you don't have to ask about each thing you choose. Attentive and professional wait staff. We indulged in the spa - some of the best massages and facials that I have had. Wonderfully relaxing and refreshing. The staff aboard the Orion were attentive, personable and professional. Again, we booked our next (third) ocean cruise with Viking during this cruise, as well as a river cruise this summer. My only comment to Viking is that they do not nurture enough their loyal customers. Discounts or upgrades are minimal or none. We had been on another Viking Ocean Cruise (Empires of the Mediterranean) and loved everything about it. Plus, for a long time, we've been very interested in going to Alaska. That combination made the decision very easy when Viking announced it was starting Alaska Inside Passage trips! We were again completely delighted with everything both on board and on shore. Our cabin had plenty of space. The ship has lots of food options, and all very tasty. We appreciated the lack of dress code. There are plenty of activities on board...but you could also do nothing if you wanted to...lots of places to curl up with a book. We would (and most likely will!) go on another Viking Ocean Cruise. We chose this cruise because we had loved our river cruise with Viking and wanted to try our first ocean cruise with them. We liked the idea of a smaller ship and no kids. The itinerary sounded good and we were interested in the pre and post extensions. My husband and I selected the 5-day Denali extension. The train was a wonderful experience as we relaxed in the glass domed car and watched the gorgeous scenery go by! The food on the train was really good as well. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun. We went into the park on a park bus with a naturalist learned a lot. We wished we could have gone further into the park. The included dinner buffet was just acceptable. The hotels were nice and scenery was amazing! Talkeetna was a great town with arts and crafts along with good food. We boarded our ship in Seward and took the Kenai Fjords optional excursion. Great views of puffins, Stellar sea lions, humpback whales and sea otters. Holgate glacier was wonderful and we were very near! In Valdez we took the optional Wrangell-St Elias excursion and were surrounded by stunning mountain views and waterfalls. We took the optional small boat whale watching excursion at Icy Straight Point and couldn’t have been more thrilled with the Orcas! There was a pod by our boat that was no more than 5 feet away! We enjoyed Skagway with the Gold Rush Cemetary and the Red Onion Saloon. The trip through the White Pass was a disappointment as it was all fogged in as usual. We took the included excursion in Juneau to Mendenhall glacier and the salmon hatchery. The scenery at the glacier and Brotherhood Bridge couldn’t have been more beautiful with the fireweed blooming! I recommend taking the tram up the Mt Roberts -great views and interesting exhibits! The raptor center and bear sanctuary in Sitka were interesting. We opted for the 2 day extension in Vancouver. Unfortunately, the transfer to the bus was poorly managed and we all stood on concrete for the better part of an hour before we were able to board the bus. The city tour was great and very inclusive of all the city sights. We loved Vancouver! Friendly people, great seafood and gorgeous! The only disappointment was that Viking had scheduled our flight out at 6:20 AM which meant our time in Vancouver was cut short and we had to get up at 2AM. We tried for at least 6 months to change the flight and were never able to change it. We even paid the extra charge to try to do so. The airport did not function well at that time of the morning. We stood in long lines for almost 2 hours and had to load our own luggage on to the conveyor belt. Poor ending for a magnificent trip. Our cabin on the ship was great! Roomy with great amenities. It was a Penthouse Veranda. The food on the ship was great. We liked the general buffet and Manfreddi’s best. The ship size was perfect! The guest lecturers were very informative and if we missed a lecture they were recorded to watch in our cabin at leisure. Read Less

We joined my brother Mike Martin, his wife Sherry on this cruise. My brother had wanted to sail the Inside Passage on an Alaskan cruise. My husband and I had cruised to Alaska on two other occasions but enjoyed it so much that we were glad to go again. The embarkation went smoothly. I was glad we didn't have to wait to board ship when we arrived at the dock. For desembarkation I suggest that passengers be made aware that they can wait onboard until their color group is called My cabin review is below. Our dining experience was excellent due to the expertise of the kitchen staff. The consistently provided us delicious meals. The wait staff were always very friendly and attentive to our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed the Orion Vocalists performances, especially the ABBA Songbook and the Beatles Songbook. We also very much enjoyed the Viking Classical Duo performance of Movie Magic. We enjoyed our shore excursions especially the Kenai Fjords by boat near Seward, the Columbia Glacier Cruise near Valdez and the Potlach Totem Park near Ketchikan. Read Less
