I had high expectations and they were exceeded. The staff was excellent and we felt absolutely pampered. The Viking staff made an extraordinary effort to learn all passengers names early on the voyage, creating a special atmosphere and a feeling of being a guest on their ship. Food and food service were very good and were of a very good variety. The cruise director was personable and did a great job of logistics and keeping everyone informed of daily activities. Our cabin was tended to three times daily by a member of the housekeeping staff. Shore excursions were all good, some guides better than others, but that is to be expected. None were substandard. My wife was hesitant about the cruise and she has rated it as best trip ever. I highly recommend this Viking cruise. We are currently planning another Viking cruise and am excited to embark on it. My husband surprised me with the cruise for our 30th anniversary. From the time they met us at the Budapest airport until we left the boat in Amsterdam we were impressed with the way they took care of us. Our cruise was from Budapest to Amsterdam. We added several excursions including day trips to Salzburg and Munich. We enjoyed everything! The staff are amazing, the boat is lovely, food is great, scenery is spectacular, tours are well planned and the local guides are very good! They bring a special dessert to all celebrations - since our anniversary was the first night they had ours waiting in our stateroom which we appreciated. The bartenders, Christian and Vladi were great - they wanted to talk to you and make your journey the best it could be. The waitstaff was personable and attentive. The cruise director, Marie and hotel manager, Klaus were always available and even went on the 16 mile bike ride with us and brought champagne to celebrate making it to the end safely! What more do you want? And why haven’t you booked it yet?? I’d go on one of their cruises anytime and anywhere. Yes, there do tend to be more senior citizens on these cruises but that’s a matter of disposable income and free time. We are in our early 50’s and never felt out of place. These are not the party cruises of the Caribbean so don’t go expecting a party and constant food. This is about learning more about Europe and seeing history. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we loved it! We were cruising with sister and brother-in-law for their 50th anniversary, as well as another couple of friends, which made it especially fun. We enjoyed seeing new ports, especially smaller cities, and revisiting some places we'd been before. The included tours at each port were wonderful -- knowledgeable, friendly, and fun guides. We also took a couple optional tours in ports we'd been to before, and those were wonderful as well, and felt like good value for the money. Loved the pace of the river boat and being able to see the shore as we glided by. Dining was a nice assortment of old favorites, available every night, and regional dishes from the regions we were passing through. Included wines also represented the various regions. Entertainment ranged from history talks to opera to a glass blower who worked with Chihuly! The crew made the cruise fun, while providing a first-class experience. We came with friends and went home with more! We'd definitely go again! Read Less

We celebrated our 30th anniversary in October, 2017 by taking a 15 day river cruise in Europe. We arrived in Amsterdam the day of sailing. We were met at the airport by Viking Representatives and taken to our ship. The Viking Modi made a great first impression! We were greeted by friendly, smiling faces and the staff went out of their way to make our trip a first class experience. We did the 15 day cruise and all of the included excursions. We enjoyed every excursion - the staff was very organized and the transport to and from the excursions was very prompt. The tour guides were wonderful and made our experience a lot of fun. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner most days on the ship. The food was great, with a nice variety of choices. The dining room service was great; the servers were very friendly and made every meal and enjoyable experience. There was live music and dancing every night in the lounge. They also brought entertainment in from the local areas that we visited. The bartenders and wait staff were excellent. One morning, they had a glass blower come aboard for show and tell. It was very interesting to see and we could purchase blown glass jewelry and other items that he brought with him. I definitely recommend the Viking River Cruise and hope to be able to do another River Cruise to Europe. Read Less

Excellent cruise. The food was exceptional in terms of choice, venue and quality. The buffet night was not organized enough and entailed at long wait. The staff was very friendly and helpful. When the ship had engine problems the response of the crew was excellent in scheduling alternative sightseeing, meals, etc. The cash allowance was a nice gesture. We made the trip with two other couples and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The pre and post cruise stays in Prague and Amsterdam were in nice hotels and the sightseeing was well organized. They were definitely worth the extra money. The only detail that needs work is the bus from Prague to Budapest. The train would be a much more enjoyable experience. We enjoyed the entire experience and we will be trying the Viking ocean cruise in the Baltic next year. Hopefully the quality will be the same in a larger scale. Read Less

Always wanted to go to Normandy and Paris. It was everything I hoped for and more. The tour of the beaches at Normandy and the cemetery was very moving and special. Also, the special service with the park staff that was held for our tour was a deep and meaningful time. The German bunkers and gun emplacements were not expected a a nice surprise. Paris was also a wonderful city. We really enjoy the smaller towns more than the large cities but Paris was very nice. We enjoyed the Eiffel Tower by day and by night. The Arch de Triumph was as beautiful as expected. On board the Modi, the crew interacted with the passengers daily. We really enjoyed the daily briefings and the Chef's daily recommendations. Food and service were excellent. Viking took care of our every need - from water during the excursions to having umbrellas available. We were fortunate that it only rained slightly on two days and neither interfered with our tours. Looking forward to our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

We chose this time to travel because it is normally so Hot and Humid in Houston Texas, and we wanted to avoid the heat. We arrived 2 days early in Amsterdam to adjust to the time change before the cruise and see more sights in Amsterdam. We learned too late that the way to travel from the airport to the City was via the public rail transit. It is cheap and reliable. Buy a day pass for the number of days you are in Amsterdam. Once on the Modi, Viking handled everything for us - We has booked a AA-Veranda Suite and it was well worth the extra $$ - we had a seating area that made it relaxing in our room and this level offers free laundry ( which we started using after a few days into the cruise). The room was on the highest deck which was much quieter than the decks below, especially going through the Locks. The open seating was fun as we shared meals with people from all over the world. the quality of food was outstanding. I got to explain the US Electoral College to several people that were interested in the USA election for President and were wondering why it was not only the popular vote. One set of friends we met will meet us on our next Viking Cruise in January 2019. The included tours were always good and the extra tours purchased ahead of time were also fun and entertaining. Don't miss Salisbury - it was fun with scenes where The Sound of Music was filmed. We especially enjoyed the grand tour of Vienna - Waltz dance lessons, a fabulous lunch at a famous restaurant, and a walking/bus tour of Vienna with a spectacular guide. WE arrived in Amsterdam after an overnight flight from ATL-AMS on KLM. Great flight and crew with KLM. Viking met us at baggage claim and gave us VIP treatment to ship. (Our airfare was part of the cruise fare.) We had made the same cruise about 8-9 years ago Budapest to Amsterdam on Viking but this was in the opposite direction. (AMS-BUD). What a big improvement in the MODI over our previous Viking ship! While we had "basement" cabins both cruises, Modi was much improved with bigger cabin and bathroom. Really enjoyed the big screen TV and outside cameras of locks and scenery. Attention to service from the crew was outstanding! Especially in dining and bar areas. All made us feel special and the extra attention we haven't seen on the many ocean cruises we have made in the past. There was more transporting by bus than we had on previous cruise but we understand why since ship can't count on lock availability when needed since locks are so much busier now and cruise lines can not get scheduled lock times like they used to have. Viking has a fleet of dedicated Viking buses to handle us and does it well. Only complaint is we sometimes had long waits in towns to get back to ship but understand the logistics of getting the ship, passengers and buses together at the same time. It boils down to --river cruising has become very popular in Europe and there is just so much room for docking in town. The tours were very nice and well staffed with qualified guides. Headsets were great and needed by us older folks! Ports were well thought out and really interesting. Due to high water for passing under bridges, we were unable to make the wine tour of the Wachau Valley but do understand it was no fault of Viking. Only negative comment about the cruise. We were one of three couples on the cruise. WE all bought trip cancellation from Viking. One of our couples had a medical problem and had to return home early and 2 1/2 months later, they are still waiting for insurance co. to settle up with them for their airfare home and other parts of the cruise they were unable to complete. Viking was very helpful to them in arranging for airfare home at a more reasonable fare than the airlines offered. Also, folks at front desk on ship were very helpful in arranging transportation for the other two couples from BUD-Prague at the end of the cruise. Read Less

Our luggage was lost and they located it and had it delivered to our cabin. Just an example of the great service. The cruise stops and tours were excellent with very knowledgeable guides. Our Cruise Director Lubo made everything run seamlessly. It was a whirlwind tour of the cities and countries due to the itinerary, but it gave us a great overview and some free time in each city. Budapest was the highlight and an unexpected surprise. Meeting the other people on the ship was the best part of the cruise and we have many new friends from all over the world. This was our first European river cruise, though we had already enjoyed a river cruise in China and an ocean cruise in the Mediterranean, both with Viking, both excellent. The level of service on board was outstanding, even given that we had the Explorer's suite. The spacious accommodations were truly luxurious, and we particularly appreciated the perks that were included (fresh flowers, bottomless minibar, laundry service, 24-hour room service, Silver Spirits package, etc.). Food was excellent as usual, with a wide range of entrees at dinner and plenty of choice at buffet breakfasts and lunch. Table service was friendly and efficient. On board entertainment was varied and interesting; we had a hands-on lesson in strudel-making, a glass-blowing demonstration, numerous talks on local history and geography, and a German Night with local musicians and local food. The resident musicians were a talented singer/guitarist and an accomplished pianist, each with an impressively wide repertoire. Shore excursions were well-chosen and well-organized, with personable and knowledgeable local guides, while leaving enough free time to explore the various ports of call on one's own. Overall the cruise was a very enjoyable, interesting and rewarding experience. We are booked on a Viking ocean cruise to the West Indies in December. Read Less

We chose Viking’s Grand European cruise because I wanted to see the Robber Baron's' castles on the Rhine. We did that and so much more. Viking Modi traveled from Budapest to Amsterdam on three rivers and two canals. We passed through 68 locks and under a multitude of bridges. Our onshore excursions took us to castles and palaces, cathedrals and synagogues, marketplaces and cemeteries, cities and towns. Expert tour guides explained art and history. We ate marvelous food and drank excellent wines. We made friends and shared experiences with other mature, educated passengers who wanted to learn about the world and were more interested in education than entertainment. I climbed to the top of a cathedral, made weisswurst in Germany, attended a Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, and saw masterpieces in Amsterdam's two world-class museums. Our journey was as busy and as relaxing as we wanted it to be. The crew treated us like royalty every mile of the way. This was our second Viking River Cruise and we are both eager to take another one. I recommend Viking highly to all my friends and relatives. We had done several other self drive river cruises in France and one Viking France river cruise and loved all. So we decided to do something longer and less stressful than another self drive version. Really enjoyed it all especially the up front extension time in Budapest and all the shore excursions. In hind sight we should have extended also in at least one more venue. We will think more carefully on that next time. Besides Regensberg and its glass shop and the sausage restaurant we were especially impressed by the windmills park in Holland. We had no idea that there is so much interesting technology involved in windmills, lots of fun was that shore excursion. The meals on board the Modi were generally good and we found the fellow passengers friendly and easy to talk with. However the Modi meals we felt were not as good as those on the Rhone river Viking cruise a few years back. On board service by all the crew was really excellent !! It would have been nice to visit some real German wineries but we missed the one offered for some reason. Would like to try another Viking in 2018. Read Less

15 days just seemed like a good length of time to spend on, what we thought was going to be, a relaxing cruise through Europe. After spending three teriffic days in Prague, we were bussed to Buddapest where my wife fell on the cobblestones and scraped her knee pretty badly. So she limped through the tours provided, and even fell again in one of the castles. But she was having such a good time on the ship, and on the tours, that you would never know she was "wounded." When we got home, I asked her what she thought of the cruise. We cruise quite a bit (3 or 4 times a year) so I was anxious to hear what she was going to say. She said she thought it was one of our two best cruises ever. I thought about her answer, and I agreed. It ranked right up there with our cruise in Tahiti and the Society Islands. Enough cannot be said about how the Viking crew/staff treated us passengers. There was nothing they wouldn't do for us. They were great. So, besides the two falls, this trip was super. Read Less

We arrived in Amsterdam after a long plane trip from Atlanta. We were tired and it was raining in Amsterdam so we boarded the ship and stayed on board. We were welcomed at the airport by a Viking representative who was very solicitous and assisted with collecting our luggage and getting us promptly to the ship. We had an excellent room and could go out on our patio or to the outside deck area any time to enjoy the scenery, sit and visit, read, or... The Viking staff took excellent care of our room and provided assistance where and when needed. The restaurant was excellent - great food, fantastic service, great views as we cruised, and many opportunities to meet and visit with fellow travelers. We had time to share food and wine with people from various parts of the United States, Canada, Ireland, England, and Australia. The staff serving in the restaurant, as well as in other public areas, were from a number of European countries - they spoke excellent English and, when engaged, shared information about their home countries. We enjoyed the entertainment and always looked forward to presentations by our Cruise Director. The tours included with the cruise were excellent as were the optional tours we took. The guides were knowledgeable and communicated well. They were from the areas we were touring and so were able to provide a better tour. At the end of the cruise portion of our trip we did a three day extension to/in Prague. Viking staff took care of us the whole time we were there. Our tours were also conducted by Viking contracted guides and were very knowledgeable. Viking staff got us from Budapest to Prague, were there at the hotel when we needed assistance, and got us to the airport and through the check-in process. There were lots of opportunities to see and take pictures of the sights along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. Lots of cathedrals, castles, museums, and other sites that are part of European history. There were lots of opportunities to take pictures and bring home memories. We are looking forward to our next trip with Viking which we are hoping will be the Viking Homeland cruise. We have highly recommended this cruise to others who might be interested and even if they are not thinking about it at this time. We are very interested in history and why we are what we are today- this trip put pictures to what we have read and been taught. Read Less

Had taken this cruise 12 years ago and thought my companions would enjoy. The ship was well laid out and quite luxurious. Crew was absolutely wonderful, especially the program director known as Joey. Food was very good. I cannot give cruise 5 stars because of some ill-chosen ports. Miltenberg and Bamberg were small and not interesting enough to justfy the hours we had to stay there. Rudesheim, Mainz, etc would be better choices. Bishop's Palace in Würzburg was overcrowded and guide told most of us far more than we wanted to know about the decor. I recommend this be an optional tour. Rothenburg was optional and the opposite would be better in my opinion. Another complaint is lack of time in some of the more interesting ports such as Budapest and Nurnberg. I did love having full days on Vienna. If you like river cruising Viking is an excellent choice. They train their staff well and are attentive to guests. There is freedom to relax aboard if that suits you. In some ports it was possible to avoid the tours and explore on one's own. Read Less

We loved the Tulips and Windmills trip we took in April 2015. This year we wanted to see more of Europe through the Grand European River Cruise. We were so exhausted from our travels from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam that we tried to catch up on sleep since the weather was cold and rainy, rather then sight see. Fortunately we got to see Amsterdam the previous year. We really enjoyed the German cities of Cologne, Koblenz, Miltenberg, Wurzburg, Bramberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau; as well as Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. The country side was absolutely beautiful as we passed slowing on the river and through all the locks that we had to go through to change from one river to another and change in elevations in the rivers. We couldn't ask for better food on the ship or a such a comfortable cabin that met all our needs and wants. We have already booked our next Viking river cruise for Oct. 2016 to go to China. Viking does such a great job of taking care of their passengers needs and comforts on the ship. The shore excursions are so wonderful that I want to come back to all the places we have visitied so I can spend more time. I have learned so much about European history that I didn't know and truly appreciate the exposure to new cultures and cuisine. Viking does such a great job in organizing everything on the day of disembarking. We had no worries about luggage or missing our flights. There was not one crisis to face as our crew and tour Director was always there first. Outing were well planned and executed flawlessly. Dining was exceptional and the staff made you feel like they were truly interested in making you happy. Service was pleasant always no matter how trivial the request, if it was important to you, it was important to them. Cabin space was close but adequate and as time went on you felt comfortable in the public spaces of the ship and used your cabin less. Comforts in the cabin were all in place and easy to function. One day we cruised and saw so many castles it was unbelievable. I think there were about 18 castles. Also like how you have free time to tour or shop or just go into town for local entertainment. And Joey, our tour director, was the best! No complaints regarding the food or drinks. The themed dinners were very nice, especially German Night. Enjoyed the accordion player and the organ grinder. If you would like a poor river, bus and walking tour, book with Viking Cruise Line, I think. You will also get poor attitude and food at times. We were on 4 different ships which meant packing and unpacking every time with bus rides between ships. Our room flooded 3 times with sewer water on different ships. I asked for a ice pack for my diabetes meds because of the long bus rides and was refused by a hotel manager. Thus it went bad and caused me big problems. Just finished one half of a Viking cruise that was abbreviated due to low water conditions. What was supposed to be 14 days cruising turned into 7 days on the rivers and 7 days on a bus. We booked this trip because it didn't entail riding a bus. The staff did a terrific job patching together the balance of the trip by arranging hotels and tours for 140 people. I have to blame management for not having the ability to provide another ship on the other side of the low water location for us to transfer to as they'd done on several other cruises recently. This was our first river cruise and probably the last. They did offer a partial refund as well as a discount on a future cruise with them if we chose to take it. Read Less

In summary, anything on-board the actual cruise (and tours) were excellent but the "corporate" side of Viking was not. First the good (read that as the ship-board and tour part of our cruise experience): The itinerary, the ship, the cabin, the food, and particularly our Cruise Director (Marek Snelly) were wonderful. The land tours were well-organized and thorough. The first 3 nights of dinners were fabulous and then just very good thereafter. Because of water levels we had to transfer ships from the Skirnir to the Modi to get to Nuremburg. I know what you are thinking. This review started off as a MODI review so what's this stuff about the SKIRNIR? (See the "bad" comments) The Skirnir and Modi are identical. The entire ship is very well planned and efficient. We are used to Ocean Cruising (having taken 19 cruises on Princess alone) so we are accustomed to much larger (232 sq ft) cabins than the Skirnir/Modi's 180 sq ft. But Viking's are so well designed that, other than the amount of space at the foot of the bed, it actually seemed bigger and more usable. The closet doors have automatic lighting when you open them and are "soft" closing. The toilet seat is also soft closing (ladies you will love that) and the bathroom has a floor level string light for making night time trips to it safe. The shower is longer, skinnier, and somewhat trapezoidal in shape and has a shower wand ... features that are far better than what we have been accustomed to on most ocean liners. Even the built in refridgerator seems larger. The in-cabin safe is wonderful. Our balcony was a bit skinnier in depth than those we have had on ocean liners but very usable. The public areas of Viking are also smaller but very efficient. The main dining room has floor to ceiling windows on both sides and tables for 6 to a dozen. You can sit anywhere but we found that, like us, most people ended up making new friends and sitting with the same group night after night. The wait staff is assigned by table areas so you get to know them, and them you, and what you like or don't like. Our server on the Modi was particularly good. The styling of the Skirnir/Modi is "Scandinavian Design" at its optimum and best ... clean, simple, and elegantly frugal on space. The first 3 night's dinners were to die for. Then they went from being fabulous to just being very good. The one thing they could do to really improve them is to make sure that the hot foods are served hot. I got tired of sending things back and just put up with it. My wife had never had better Veal Medallions. Their salmon is always wonderful. But the "Reduction" Beef Wellington is unrecognizable as a Beef Wellington and I just sent it back and ordered a salmon. But when you see how SMALL their kitchen is you will be surprised that they can make meals for 20 let alone 190 ! All of the people on-board the Viking were very polite and wanting to do literally anything to please. This far exceeded anything we have witnessed on over 25 ocean cruises. But our Cruise Director "Marek" was particularly exceptional. There are no words to describe just how incredible a job he did. And ALL of them knew our names within one day !!! Now for the bad: Let me preface my comments by telling you that I am a dinosaur ... coming from both my upbringing as well as 34 years at a Fortune 10 Company where ETHICS, telling the TRUTH, and FOLLOWUP were demanded and key to your business and of primary measure of you as a person. Candidly, Viking (CORPORATE ONLY) falls so far short in this area it is disgusting. When I booked the cruise, I made sure our booking agent knew how important it was for us not to be seated in the back of a large plane and that this was key to our booking. He assured me that the people at Viking that booked the flights could/would accommodate us. They did not. And help ended the moment he had my charge account number. Above our repeated requests over a 4 week period we were assigned seats in the second to the last row of a 747's middle 4 section (3-4-3 layout)! And everytime I pleaded for reassignment I was hit with something they call "codeshare". Funny but brand new passengers on the flights could buy upgrades ... which I tried to do ... but was told by Viking, Delta, and KLM that it was not possible. In my life I was led to believe that there is a word that describes not being allowed to buy something that others can: DESCRIMINATION. With determination I literally "sat" on the airline websites so as to find a way, albeit at last minute on the 10 hour flight from LAX to Amsterdam segment to be able to swap seats. I was able to purchase "Economy Plus" seats on KLM for the return flight. But it turns out that Viking was only charged $625 round-trip for each of us to fly round trip from Los Angeles! $625??? Have you ever tried to buy a round trip economy ticket to Europe? It's at least $1500-$2000. So I guess that's why you should expect to have the worst seats possible when you book through Viking. You are now forewarned. We were greeted at the Budapest airport by Viking-assigned personnel (on-ship people as far as I was concerned and excellent) and transferred in a lovely Mercedes bus to the dock ... only to find out that we would be on the Skirnir, not the Modi! The river levels near Nuremburg were too low so we had to re-pack our clothes and be bused to the next port, just to be bused back to Nuremburg for the land tour of that port. And at the end of our cruise we docked in Rotterdam, not Amsterdam! It turned out that Viking corporate was not aware that "Sail Amsterdam" (an every-5-year-celebration) did not allow them to do it ... and that this was a "surprise"! What? Viking knew about it for at least 4 years and 11 months and it was a surprise??? They are either brain dead or lying. I think they lied. The point that I am trying to make is that if someone tries to hide things that are out of their control (like the Danube River level), how comfortable are you with what they will do in explaining things that are under their control? We were told when I booked the cruise that we were buying the very last cabin on the ship. Funny, but I talked with at least 4 other couples on our cruise that were told the same exact thing. Bottom line I don't think the word "honesty" is in Viking corporate's vocabulary. I also must say that one of the main reasons for taking a cruise is to only unpack and re-pack once. While this was caused by something outside of Viking's controls, it makes me seriously question ever doing another river cruise Summarizing: Everything about the cruise itself was wonderful BUT make sure you book Viking with your eyes open. I suggest you obtain trip insurance but not from Viking. I used Squaremouth, fyi, and you should expect to pay about 5% of your total cruise/airline/hotel costs to get a rough idea of what reasonable trip insurance should cost. And if you use frequent flier miles to book your flights, understand that travel insurance does not cover that ... as you didn't "pay" anything for it. But what if you used frequent flier miles and Viking cancelled the cruise ... what would you do? I guess I should be very happy. Many cruises by Viking were cancelled as well as by other carriers. Many, as ours, had bus detours. But don't you expect your cruise company to be "up front" and "forthright" in how they deal with these things? It would have been SO simple for Viking just to tell everybody, up front, that it changing ships was a real probability. I would have accepted that. But even Viking's website never acknowledged that our cruise was ... or ever would be ... affected. Read Less

We took our third River cruise on Viking and had a fabulous time! Enjoyed the people cruising with us, the incredible staff and the culinary creations of the chef! The ship is intimate, not the usual herds of people on an ocean liner. Crew was outstanding, friendly and most accommodating. Any time we can work out a cruise on a Viking ship, we will take it! If you are expecting Broadway entertainment, casinos and flashy dance floors, this is not for you. But if you are interested in history, expanding your horizons for a better understanding of our world and meeting great people, go on a Viking River cruise! It cannot be beat! Read Less
