Wanted a full European river cruise and this was it. Great service - better than great - it was excellent. Loved the include excursions at every port. Tour guides were locals who really knew their town and its history. Ship crew was wonderful in every respect. Chef was great, Program Director was very entertaining, all levels of the crew pitched in where ever needed. Going through the many locks was interesting. Went through 4 countries and along the Rhine, Main, the canal and the Danube. Countryside with all the castles and vineyards was very relaxing. River cruising was much more relaxed than ocean cruising. Spent a couple of extra days in Amsterdam prior to the cruise and a few days in Prague after the cruise. Overall, the entire trip was much better than I expected. We are looking forward to a trip through France as our next river cruise and we would definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!! GREATEST VACTION WE'VE EVER BEEN ON!!!!! From the moment we landed at the Budapest airport the Viking team was on the ball. You are welcomed on board the ship with a complimentary drink and escorted directly to our room and then enjoyed lunch. Throughout the entire trip one meal after the other was outstanding. All of our wait staff (Raul, Stan, and Mai) made every meal a great experience. Because of the wide variety and tastes of the soups at lunch I've become a soup eater back home. The Viking crew was always on the ball, they were organized and planned ahead for issues that happen on a River Cruise. Can't wait to do it again and YES it will be on Viking. Our tour director Dawn worked hard to make sure that our excursions went smoothly even though we high a problem with high river water which caused us to fall almost a full day behind on the cruise portion. Because of Vikings great service the arranged for slightly longer bus trips, etc. so that we did not miss one of the planned destinations. The Captain and crew worked hard to catch up once water levels reduced and our trip ended exactly as planned. Only suggestion I would make to anyone is to extend your trip at the end. We got to tour our embarkation city (Budapest) but only got to see Amsterdam on a bus going to the airport. By staying with the extension, you get to see both. Read Less

15 days just seemed like a good length of time to spend on, what we thought was going to be, a relaxing cruise through Europe. After spending three teriffic days in Prague, we were bussed to Buddapest where my wife fell on the cobblestones and scraped her knee pretty badly. So she limped through the tours provided, and even fell again in one of the castles. But she was having such a good time on the ship, and on the tours, that you would never know she was "wounded." When we got home, I asked her what she thought of the cruise. We cruise quite a bit (3 or 4 times a year) so I was anxious to hear what she was going to say. She said she thought it was one of our two best cruises ever. I thought about her answer, and I agreed. It ranked right up there with our cruise in Tahiti and the Society Islands. Enough cannot be said about how the Viking crew/staff treated us passengers. There was nothing they wouldn't do for us. They were great. So, besides the two falls, this trip was super. Read Less

Had taken this cruise 12 years ago and thought my companions would enjoy. The ship was well laid out and quite luxurious. Crew was absolutely wonderful, especially the program director known as Joey. Food was very good. I cannot give cruise 5 stars because of some ill-chosen ports. Miltenberg and Bamberg were small and not interesting enough to justfy the hours we had to stay there. Rudesheim, Mainz, etc would be better choices. Bishop's Palace in Würzburg was overcrowded and guide told most of us far more than we wanted to know about the decor. I recommend this be an optional tour. Rothenburg was optional and the opposite would be better in my opinion. Another complaint is lack of time in some of the more interesting ports such as Budapest and Nurnberg. I did love having full days on Vienna. If you like river cruising Viking is an excellent choice. They train their staff well and are attentive to guests. There is freedom to relax aboard if that suits you. In some ports it was possible to avoid the tours and explore on one's own. Read Less

First time river cruisers and chose this one for the full Grand European Cruise experience. First and foremost, the Viking Staff were absolutely outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure the passengers were always treated as top priority throughout the entire voyage. We also chose the late April sailing so we could enjoy the tulips in full bloom and they were definitely showing their colors. A beautiful sight. The trade off for going on this cruise in the Springtime is having cooler temperatures. They were so cool that we had days with sleet and hail while in Amsterdam. The local people agreed the temperatures were extremely cold for the time of year when we were there. The only thing preventing a top mark for the overall rating, is the large amount of idle time for passengers. Morning walking tours were routine in most cities, but once they were complete, the remainder of the day is pretty much up to the individual passenger. There are add-on excursions that can be taken at additional expense, but they would help to fill up the day. This type of cruise is not suitable for children and I would strongly recommend parents not bring them on a river cruise. They might be extremely bored. Read Less

restaurants - the service was impeccable, always ready to assist with a smile. The staff could not do enough for the guests. the food was average tasting but elegantly presented. I think the problem was the quality of the beef offerings or possibly the country it was obtained from. No matter how elegantly it was presented, the beef was just average. Maybe you need another supplier. The kitchen sure did their job in the presentation, but it was the flavor. Chicken dishes were better. The cabin was lovely, clean at all times, bright and airy, light color furnishings. Bathroom sparkled. The housekeepers were exceptional. They did their job with a smile at all times. the room sparkled, linens were bright white and pressed, a joy to sleep in. The ship's staff was excellent. "Joey" our cruise director was exceptional. It was always a pleasure to meet with the group and him in the lounge at the end of our day, one never knew what he would say. He had us laughing over and over again. Excellent choice. He made our trip! Our housekeeping manager was excellent, any request was joyously provided! She was great! The excursions were well chosen. Top notch buses and tour guides on all trips. Our time was well spent on excellent and well planned excursions. A trip we will never forget. Thanks Viking Read Less

Always wanted to do a Viking Cruise. We did the Rhine Getaway in April 2016. Highly recommend if anyone does this Cruise when you are in Strasbourg, France to do the optional tour "A Taste of Alsace". What a wonderful excursion. One day we cruised and saw so many castles it was unbelievable. I think there were about 18 castles. Also like how you have free time to tour or shop or just go into town for local entertainment. And Joey, our tour director, was the best! No complaints regarding the food or drinks. The themed dinners were very nice, especially German Night. Enjoyed the accordion player and the organ grinder. We really have no complaints about this Cruise and are ready to go again! The only con was the weather at the end went we got to Amsterdam. We did the extra nights but it rained and hailed and was so cold we were unable to really do anything. Oh well, Que Sera' Sera'! Read Less

We like sailing Viking, opportunity to see Paris. This trip gave us both. And both were great. The thing that was best about the cruise was the care that the crew took in serving the passengers. It was beyond just being nice. In every port the tours were informative and entertaining. The wait staff was super. The tour director was efficient and very entertaining. The concierge was fabulous. The ship's hotel staff, from top to bottom was excellent. The Captain and his staff ensured everything went smoothly from start to finish. Paris was, well, Paris (fabulous). The Viking personnel there were efficient and courteous. The hotel, Le Meridian, was ok. Breakfast was very good. The room was clean. Our view from the room was of the HVAC system. And one day they missed cleaning our room. Not quite five stars. We opted for the two extra days there (on our own). The location of the hotel, near the Arc de Triumph, led to ease in self exploration of that great city. Read Less

For our first trip abroad, we wanted a guided tour that was relaxing but where we would still be able to visit parts of France and Germany. Seeing Switzerland was a bonus. With all the excellent meals on board, and transportation provided, this trip was bargain for us. The staff and service on board catered to your every whim. The tours are adapted to seniors and there was enough free time and tips to make every excursion enjoyable. The only disappointment was the rainy weather, as we would have loved to enjoy the sun deck more. Viking greeted us with hot towels and warm drinks upon our return to the ship to make up for this. It was exciting to find out what gourmet meal the chef had made for us each day. Everything was first class! We do plan to travel again with Vikng to see more sites. This is the only way to travel! We chose to cruise in October to celebrate my birthday. We had hoped for good weather but Mother Nature did not co-operate. All the days but one were cold, rainy and overcast. Of course Viking had no control over the weather. We chose the 2 day extension in Amsterdam and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The hotel was very nice and we had a great tour of the city. The cruise started off with a glitch as the Viking Modi had run aground on her previous voyage and could not reach Amsterdam in time to pick up the passengers so we were bused to the ship. We were aware that there had been many problems with low water levels in the European rivers last year but decided to go on this cruise anyway. We were the first ship to make in all the way through without changing ships midway through the trip. Previously we had cruised on many larger ocean going ships. So this was a definite new experience for us. One of the positives is that you get to know the crew and fellow passengers very well. After the first few days of the trip my favorite waitress knew what I liked for breakfast and had it ordered before I sat down. The crew were all very attentive. We liked the open seating as it gave us a chance to meet many new friends. Compared to other cruises, the food was just OK. The entertainment was only so-so, mostly just piano music. We really prefer the entertainment on the larger ships. The excursions that were included were very nice, we learned a lot about the history of each of the ports. I highly recommend the optional excursion to Rothenburg, it was amazing. Another inconvenience we encountered was the closing of one of the bridges that forced us to pass Vienna and then get bused back into town. Viking did make up for it by paying for our admission to the symphony which was originally an optional tour that was not included. I will say that Viking always tried to please the passengers by making adjustments to the excursions and other arrangements. The last port was Budapest and I would suggest staying up when you arrive later in the evening to see the beautiful lights of the city. Very well done! I also personally missed not having a place to workout. There was a track available on the top deck, but it was cold and many days it was closed. Actually I may have been one of only a few passengers that missed a workout area as most of the passengers were older. We enjoyed the experience but will probably go back to ocean cruising. You can only visit so many churches and castles. Read Less

This was an excellent cruise and one of the best travel experiences my wife and have ever had. The Viking organization was exceptionally well organized with our booking and in coordinating our travel arrangements. The Modi ship was clean, spacious and the food was exceptional. All of the crew, housekeeping, tours and entertainment simply could not have been any better. Attention to detail and a service mindset was definitely apparent with everyone on the ship. Bathe scenery, the excursions, the historical facts presented were top notch. By the time we finished the cruise we knew most of the passengers on board and all the crew which made for a nice and friendly cruise. I highly recommend this Viking cruise and the Viling organization. In fact, we have already booked our next Viking cruise. Read Less

This was our first trip to Europe and first river cruise. We had no idea what to expect. In a nutshell, Viking exceeded all of our expectations! Friendly, always ready to help staff; fabulous, healthy food choices every day. Beautiful ship with every amenity you would need...and more! Entertaining shore excursions with such efficient fun staff members. Bus travel was wonderful- when needed. Everything appeared to be brand new and fresh. We never felt lost or unsure of where we were supposed to be or how we were to get there. Everything was well planned and orchestrated. I give Viking stright 10's across the board and can't wait for our next Viking adventure!! The Rhine was gorgeous and offered so much to see and experience. A week was absolutely not long enough! We loved the shore excursions- there was something for everyone. Viking was kind enough to arrange to have bicycles delivered to our ship so that our group could go off on our own bicycle trip two afternoons of the trip! It was fantastic. The staff offered suggestions of places we could go to on our own and great activities we could do for some good exercise. We love to remain active while traveling and Viking helped us do exactly that! From the Captain to all crewmembers, we say "Thank you" for a job very well done! You made your home feel like "our home" while traveling. We will travel on the rivers of the world again with Viking! Read Less
