For lots of reasons we booked this Grand European Tour for mid October. We had a great time, but decided we probably won't do another river cruise right away, maybe not ever again. Not a knock on Viking, but a better understanding of who we are as travelers. So, the good and great. Incredibly clean, inviting atmosphere populated with helpful, gracious people, all of whom try to make your trip wonderful. And they are mostly successful. We absolutely loved our fourteen days. Our room was small but a great place to sleep and get ready for all the adventures. The dining room is an adventure. We are used to ocean cruises with assigned seating so the whole process of 'finding a table' at night was a bit of a challenge. My wife has some hearing issues, so the noise level was tough for her. All the tables at dinner are for six or eight, so you will be with folks and trying do the polite dinner conversation can be tough. Our problem, not anyone else's. Interestingly, many folks established groups and those groups became tough to breech. We sat with at least 60 different folks (we wrote down the names). There are about 190 on the ship so we felt we did okay. Dinners themselves were a mixed bag. Some were outstanding, some average, a few awful. German regional cuisine is a tough sell as well. The next to the last night our table of six all ordered a New York steak. Of the six, two were fine, two were mostly gristle and two were uncuttable. Other nights, wonderful stuff. Breakfast and lunch more pedestrian. Main courses were the best bets. Desserts were usually the disappointing part of the meal except the sorbets and the fruit plate. Free wine and beer at dinner was a hit, but at a price. Dinners are long. Starts at 7 p.m. and rarely ended before 9 p.m. Tough time for the senior set that makes up this ship's target audience. Meals are also available on the deck outside the lounge. Buffet for breakfast and lunch, with the occasional grilled lunch (think burgers, fish, chicken). The dinner up there is off the menu, but only seating for 16 and some folks planted themselves there and went no where else so finding a seat was not possible. A bit frustrating. Alex, our cruise director, was amazingly good. Personable, handsome, humorous, and organized. Made the trip for many of us. We saw him regularly in the lounge just before dinner as he gave the port talk for the next day, or a history lesson. The lounge was fine for a lounge, not big enough for a meeting room. We experienced some water level issues so had to accelerate down the river so we wouldn't need to change ships. This meant we went past our ports and bused back. Better than ship swapping, but buses aren't as much fun as walking into town from a ship docked on the river. That said, the organizational skill exhibited by Viking was amazing. Good guides in every port. Some had more material to work with than others, as not all the stops are historical 'wows' but all were fun to see. Great trip, glad we did it, ship was wonderful, made some friends, but we decided this isn't our kind of travel. It definitely has great appeal for lots of folks, they were on my ship, just not us. Try river cruising. You will love it, or you won't. Read Less

Always wanted to do a river cruise in Europe and this one provided the most highlights and included shore excursions. Going that far, we wanted to spend more time so we chose a 2 week cruise. The reason for the poor review is the way Viking handled the low water situation. We had inquired about this problem before we left for our cruise and was told that there was no issue. They lied! We heard from the crew that the situation had been ongoing for 3 months! The main reason we take cruises is to avoid having to repack as we move from location to location. On this "cruise" we had to pack and unpack 3 times during the cruise and spent 19 hours on busses being shuttled form one ship n to another. We missed one location altogether and stayed on 3 different ships and a hotel! Had we known this, we would have waited to take the cruise at another time! This was an expensive trip and we feel it did not deliver the experience we expected. Most other people on board felt the same way. We all received an email less than a week before the cruise informing us of one possible issue in one section of the river. It turned out to be 4 sections! This was obviously too late to cancel. Viking has offered us 25% of our cruise fare off of another Viking cruise as compensation. I don't feel I can trust Viking to be honest and doubt that I will ever use this cruise line again! Very disappointed. That said, the included shore excursions were wonderful with local guides who spoke English very well as did the crew. Meals on board were fantastic with a good selection. My only complaint about the entertainment and activities on board were that they occurred at 9 pm when I was ready for bed! Embarkation and disembarkation was a delight after the cattle calls of ocean cruises. Read Less

Recommended by travel agent. The ship allowed an obviously sick man to board and infect numerous passengers and the crew. He should because of that person, I was infected with the flu and missed 80% of the cruise and tours, being confined to may stateroom because of illness caused by the sick individual. It was very unfair. One of the tours had to be cancelled because of a river closure. Viking refunded $40 of the $49 and kept $9. The air reservations were made by incompetent people who don't how to allow for time to get off on plane, go through security and customs and make the connecting flight. We missed the connecting flight and had to wait for a much later flight. We arrived in Budapest after midnight. Viking did not meet us at the airport. They said it was too late (their fault) and could not inconvenience an employee. Only passengers should be inconvenienced. That was the attitude throughout the trip. We had to take a taxi from the airport to the ship and Viking refused to refund the tip we had to pay the taxi driver. This was the worst cruise ship experience I have ever had. I will never travel with Viking and again. What was good? The food and consideration of the chef for my inability to eat anything solid for days. The chef made me fresh ginger tea, than broth until I could eat solid food. I have high praise for the chef. Read Less

We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with the Grand European tour. This is 15 nights. We went from Amsterdam to Budapest, but you can also book going the other direction. The Magni and it’s staff managed to be efficient and friendly while being both elegant and relaxed. The longships are well designed and comfortable. We were concerned that it would be difficult to make friends, however, the majority of people were open and friendly middle aged or better couples. There were a couple of honeymooners and multi-generational families with older teens, but everyone was mixing by the second week. We got to know lovely people from Australia, England, and parts of the U.S that we have not visited. The tables in the dining room are for 6, and the lounge areas are also, so it was not difficult to mix naturally. We also got to know people in our excursion group pretty well. We booked the air and a pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam, along with an optional tour. So glad we did! Viking staff took good care of us from the moment we arrived to claim our luggage at the Amsterdam airport. Our airline had lost my bag, and the Viking guide helped me talk with the mostly Dutch-speaking airline employee. It was delivered to our hotel that afternoon. When it was time to go home, an airline strike affected our plans, but the desk staff handled it for us, so we could enjoy our last day without worry. This was a wonderful, stress-free way to see many places and get a taste of the culture on a first-class floating hotel. Highly recommend. My only wish would be more outside dining space. The ports of call and included excursions ranged from enjoyable to amazing. Not all will suit everyone’s fancy, but we learned many new things each place we went. Lots of freedom to explore on your own as well. Read Less

Excellent ship, itinerary, service and overall the very best vacation we have taken in over 40 years. This is absolutely the way to go to relax, enjoy new countries, experience new countries and cultures, enjoy excellent food and service while cruising down the historic Danube. Nothing gets better than a Viking River Cruise! If you have never taken a cruise, this is the one you should take. The big ships are really nice, but the service, personal attention, guest relations and overall atmosphere of the River Cruise is terrific. We have already scheduled our next cruise for next year on the Viking Sigrum. The cost of this cruise is very reasonable and the air fare from Texas was ok. Not much you can do about the high cost of flying but the trip on the Viking Magna was well worth the price and travel requirements. Great Job Viking, see you again in April 2019! Read Less

I chose this cruise for its length I really wanted to experience a long cruise my first time out. I must say from the moment I stepped on the ship I was in awe. Everybody I met were so pleasant to be around. The crew was so helpful with everything I asked about always a smile on their faces no matter how many times I may ask a question and no matter how dumb. The food was great now I'm not much of a fancy eater and there were alot of things I didn't try but I never went hungry they made sure I had something I would like. The desserts were to die for. Our cabin was always clean and fresh towels even when I didn't ask. And the public bathrooms were clean every hour which tells me they care a great deal. Theres nothing worse then a dirty bathroom. Our tours were well informed and though a little hard at times I just kept on moving.lol I was very said on that last day saying goodbye to my new friends was rough. Theres so much to say but what I will say if you never done a river cruise this is the one to do' Thank You Ray White Read Less

Friends had taken Viking cruises, including this one, and raved about them. We found everything, from our cabin, to the staff, to the tour guides, to be exceptional. The AA Veranda cabin was spacious and comfortable. I could arise early, drink my tea, and read or enjoy the view in one room, while my wife was able to sleep undisturbed in the other. Our cabin steward was outstanding. He could not have been more accommodating. Regardless of what requests we made of the staff, they fulfilled them, and always with a smile. The included tours were informative and entertaining, with local guides who were proud of their cities and very knowledgeable about them. We particularly enjoyed dining at Acquavit. The menu was not as extensive as the one in the dining room, but the restaurant is at the bow, allowing us to see where we were headed, and offering al fresco dining most days. Read Less

Initially the deal of 2 for was the main reason. Price was good. Itinerary was good. On arrival the reception was faultless and booking in went so well without a hitch, shown to stateroom efficiently. Stateroom was small but it was a river cruise, couldn't be widened. .The staff throughout the whole cruise were magnificent and couldn't have been more helpful.. The meals were tops and if still hungry could have had extra, had wine at meals. All the included tours were topical for the areas we were in. Included was the silver package so better wines and drinks were included and some very nice wines were tasted. More on staff at meals , they got to know your preference and were ready to assist at all times. Loved the whole experience and definitely would travel with Viking again. Unfortunately the weather was overcast most of the time but was not cold and air conditioning in the ship was good so could walk around inside in shirt and go outside for short time with shirt but not a long time. Locks were amazing for the first dozen but after that you ignored them or they were at night and all you saw was a brick wall beside your room. Read Less

Looked like interesting places, and the only place we'd been to before was Amsterdam. Everything about the cruise was fabulous--the ship, cabin, staff, food, cleanliness, service. From the moment we got to the ship (we had added on 4 nights in Prague on our own), we were taken care of like royalty. The meals were superb, the staff very nice. I fell on my face in Wurzburg, and everyone was so helpful back on the ship, bringing me special food when I couldn't chew much, making sure I was okay, etc. We loved the shore excursions--the local guides were all great. We were amazed at how well-designed the cabins were. Plenty of storage space. We also booked the 4 nights after we got off the ship, 2 in Amsterdam and 2 in Ghent, w/ a day trip to Bruges, which was magical! I want to go again--maybe next year. Oh, and we were on the Magni, because of the Baldur getting delayed by a lock (?), and fortunately, we didn't have to switch. We loved the staff on the Magni! Read Less

The best vacation we ever had. I can not find fault with any part of this great cruise. First, the customer first attitude is instilled top to bottom. The ship was more than perfect. The cabins were so well built , beautiful, functional and the Scandinavian design was great. The bath featured a heated floor, ample room, luxury bath products and was kept spotlessly clean by the steward who came at least three times a day, when we were at Breakfast, at lunch and during dinner to turn down the beds. On the first day he noticed I had a CPAP breathing machine. He asked if it should have distilled water. A large two gallon container was in the room when we got back from dinner. The meals were superb, always a regional dish was offered as well as seven or eight entrées. The first course had four choices, a cheese course, desserts and beer and wine were free at meals. The tours were beyond compare, with gentle options for people not very fit. They have thought of everything and from the time you land to the time you board your flight home, they are with you every step. Read Less

Everyone, entertainment (Stein), ships crew were very nice and friendly. The food was excellent and the chef came around almost every dinner time to see how we were doing and if the food was fine. We even took a tour of the kitchen and could ask any question about the service or if we wanted any special food. We explored every town the ship docked at and our guides were always very helpful. There was some sort of entertainment every night whether it was the crew or someone or group coming on board the ship. Our cabin was always kept clean. We were notified along the route when ever there was something interesting that we were going to be going by. I can not say enough about the friendliness and courtesy of everyone on this ship. We had heard Viking was very good to cruise with. It met and exceeded our expectations. We have cruised on the Princess, Norwegian, an now the Viking, it far exceeded any of the others. The crew when acting as a guide were far superior to any guides we have ever had. The evening talks on what was the next day served as an excellent spring board for the next day activities. The entertainment at night at the local ports was often far superior to what we had seen on large ships. The intimacy of the small tables and excellent cuisine with outstanding service allowed to make multiple friends each new day. Our steward quickly understood our quirks and habits, making our room even more habitual. We never woke once during the night as the ship moved. We have already purchased a second cruise for our 50th in March 2017 to France because of the outstanding Viking service provided, especially the spacious rooms and now look forward to having another delightful week with Viking. Great food. Nice that there was always some standard, right side of the menu items. Nice that there were two options of where to dine. Only bad meal was the celebration night, everybody scrambled for seats and buffet at same time. Buffet worked great at breakfast and lunch since is was over an extended time. Service excellent and staff very attentive. Excursions were good mostly, except one private walking tour we took in Amsterdam was much better than the sponsored one. Pickup and transfers flawless. There was a good amount of free time but little what I would call scenic river cruising. A little surprised at age of group. We are in our mid 60's and the vast majority were 70+. Maybe we should have expected this being tulips and windmills. This was a problem on excursions since the slower people set the pace or the groups got widely separated and at times people got lost/left behind. Wheelchairs dont work well on gravel or cobblestone. Would had been disappointed with a veranda or suite since we were sometimes docked sandwiched between other boats, although when docked the last place we wanted to be was in our cabin. TV and wifi didnt work or was spotty, but again we spent very little time in the cabin and tv and computers are not why we took the voyage There was plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) on top or in the lounge areas. The room was good (french balcony) shower a little tight but fine. Bed was the best ever, I even made an inquiry to find out more info on it (beat our 3k pillow top hands down). Overall was a very relaxing, quiet, and safe time. Still working on losing the pounds I gained even with all the walking. . Read Less

I wanted to experience the tulip fields of Holland. And they were magnificent!!! The tour of the windmills was also a draw. Loved it!! Only wish we had more time in the tulip fields and gardens. The Viking cruise itself was terrific, as usual. The attention to detail was amazing. For example, one afternoon when we returned to the ship after a walking tour, we were handed a pure white tulip. I thought the gesture was lovely, but also thought, "What am I going to do with this tulip?" When we got to our rooms, there on the counter was a crystal bud vase! The room cabin, the dining room and the front desk and concierge service were impeccable. The food was just yummy--lots of selections at every meal. Our veranda room had plenty of space. The itinerary was busy, but not too busy. We especially enjoyed visiting with the locals in Hoorn. We got to spend an hour in a home and asked questions about life in Hoorn and were served tea and apple strudel!!! Although we booked on March 1st, for a departure date of March 31st, we were amazed at how smoothly our booking process went. Thank you, Viking, for a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

And, I actually liked the food on the Baldur better than the Magni, although the Magni was very good as well. Excursions were great and we had some really super tour guides. We loved our Nuremberg guide as well as our guide in Bamberg. And, the Abbey at Melk is a truly amazing place. I have recommended the trip to several friends. It was wonderful. Read Less

We have been on 5 river cruises but this was the first one with Viking. The staff were fine! The ship - on which we paid extra to have a third floor suite - was parked next to another ship at least 5 times. What a disappointment to wake up 3 days in a row only to see another person's room as our view. On previous AVALON cruise this never happened and noticed them in several ports this year - never beside another ship! The ship was not always docked at the port advertised - some times 20 - 30 minutes away - the buses would leave and then the ship would leave - once the ship was not even where the tour ended - 30 minutes away. This meant that after the tour they would give free time - 2 + hours at times - that is just too much time away from the ship for 75 - 87 year olds! Some people had packages from their travel agent that included all drinks (even premium ones) and tips. That meant that some signed for drinks and some did not. Not a good atmosphere in the lounge! We booked directly with VIKING and got none of that! The top deck was not open except once in the beginning and the last day - even when we were in port - they did not bother to put up the railings or seats! Meals were overcooked on 4 evenings - the chef was concerned but that did not help eating it! Many on the ship got 12-24 hour food poisoning - never been so sick! Not for us! Read Less
