March 31, 2019 on Viking Magni River Cruise Budapest to Passau. First suggestion, do your homework. We booked a French “Balcony” (sliding door) on 3rd Fl. Very small. Just enough room for a double bed. No chairs so reading or TV is lying on bed. Small bathroom. Very efficient but claustrophobic. Room has fridge but only useful for bringing in shore beverages or food. Hint. Don’t upgrade the liquor package. Buy duty free or in town and save $$ as you can bring this on board and no corkage. Fridge is useless otherwise as no room service and cannot bring any bottles from bar into room (even with their best upgraded liquor package!). WiFi is free as it should be because it was terrible. With modern service I’m sure this could be improved if they wanted to but would increase expenses. Service was impeccable from everyone. As were the excursions, even those included. That is the expectation and the standard for this caliber of cruise. The entrees we had were all good but not exceptional. Superb buffet is always in addition to table menu service. Best meal was grilled sea bass served on last day. Meals are mostly served in main dining room with tables of 6-8+. Great opportunity to build friendships and share conversations with fellow travelers. Still good value and a we hope to go again but equipped with new knowledge to fine tune our experience. Read Less

We wanted a long cruise where we could truly relax. The 15 day cruise was really great. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on board. We had beautiful weather and the shore excursions were very enjoyable. Our dining experience was very nice. We were well taken care of. The stop in Nuremberg was very moving. The guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Our director Marie was lots of fun. She kept us all entertained. The onboard staff operated like a well tuned clock. They anticipated our every need. The front desk helped us arrange a nice bike ride along the river that was very enjoyable. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxed cruise along 3 different rivers. The only thing I would recommend would be the serving of local wines. While we like Argentine Malbec at home in the USA and while traveling in Argentina, we did expect European wines would be served to us at dinner. Read Less

We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with the Grand European tour. This is 15 nights. We went from Amsterdam to Budapest, but you can also book going the other direction. The Magni and it’s staff managed to be efficient and friendly while being both elegant and relaxed. The longships are well designed and comfortable. We were concerned that it would be difficult to make friends, however, the majority of people were open and friendly middle aged or better couples. There were a couple of honeymooners and multi-generational families with older teens, but everyone was mixing by the second week. We got to know lovely people from Australia, England, and parts of the U.S that we have not visited. The tables in the dining room are for 6, and the lounge areas are also, so it was not difficult to mix naturally. We also got to know people in our excursion group pretty well. We booked the air and a pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam, along with an optional tour. So glad we did! Viking staff took good care of us from the moment we arrived to claim our luggage at the Amsterdam airport. Our airline had lost my bag, and the Viking guide helped me talk with the mostly Dutch-speaking airline employee. It was delivered to our hotel that afternoon. When it was time to go home, an airline strike affected our plans, but the desk staff handled it for us, so we could enjoy our last day without worry. This was a wonderful, stress-free way to see many places and get a taste of the culture on a first-class floating hotel. Highly recommend. My only wish would be more outside dining space. The ports of call and included excursions ranged from enjoyable to amazing. Not all will suit everyone’s fancy, but we learned many new things each place we went. Lots of freedom to explore on your own as well. Read Less

After over 30 'ocean' cruises we were excited to experience our first river cruise. We chose Viking based partly upon their itinerary and partly upon their 'dominance' in the river cruise market. As I sit here after over two weeks aboard, I am sad to report that though there were good times, accentuated by many very devoted crew members, the 'Viking experience' left me sadly disappointed. This disappointment is primarily due to Viking's dominance in the river cruise market (lots of riverboats) and their policy of 'rafting up' while at port to save on docking fees. Let me explain... Viking has over 60 riverboats cruising the rivers of the world primarily in the European market. At any one port you can expect 3 or more Viking riverboats to be docked on any given day. To save on docking fees Viking 'rafts up' (ties their boats side to side) up to three vessels deep. This results in about one foot of space between balconies, thus NO view and NO privacy for 50% or 100% (if you are the middle of three boats) of the cabins. If you are in port for a couple of days this can be very unpleasant. Utilization of the balcony and the view you paid a premium for are gone. This Viking 'experience' isn't much mentioned in the brochure or the photos of the lovely European cities (which you cannot see from your blocked cabin). The resulting 'Viking experience' is more like paying a premium for the lowest price inside cabin. Lights on 24/7 to see or just move about in your cabin. While rafting is not unique to Viking, due to the number of Viking vessels on the rivers and canals of the world (68 and growing, as I understand), you are way more liable to wind up in this unpleasant scenario with them than any other riverboat cruise line. It is for this reason that I would recommend that before booking your next riverboat cruise you should seriously consider any other cruise line than Viking. Read Less

Our pre and post cruise extensions in Prague and Amsterdam were great as well. Cabin was always clean Restaurant was great, food selection and service were outstanding Ship is kept in great condition at all times All our questions and concerns were addressed in the timely manner All the stops were interesting and exciting, the tour guides were great We are definitely coming back for another Viking cruise. We would like to thank everyone at Viking for making our vacation an unforgettable travel adventure! Our total trip was 20 days with extensions and it flew by very fast (I am so glad that we took a lot of pictures). Vacationing on a river cruise is somewhat like an ocean cruise, but in some ways very different. Viking cruise is top notch. Very refined, luxurious experience. The Danube has so much history and activities to offer! Extra stay in Budapest was amazing - the prettiest city I’ve seen at night (and that includes NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, Seattle, among others)The included excursions were great, and the extra excursions available were very well done also. Our cruise director (Wes) was fantastic and did a great job of advising us on things to do. He wasn’t afraid to tell us the excursions or things to do that he didn’t like as much, and made the entire experience so much fun. Food was incredible, with a wide selection of American and local foods. Staff onboard was exceptional. Awesome people we met on the cruise, and since there were less than 200 passengers, we got to know them better - and still in touch with several of them! It is a bit pricey, but well worth the investment for a vacation. Read Less

We had never gone to this part of Europe and we love sailing with Viking. Everything about the whole trip was fantastic, We got upgraded to a suite which was a very nice surprise. Everyone on the cruise was in the same mindset,,,out to have a wonderful time. The food was fantastic and the service was beyond compare. I have some health issues and did not feel like going to dinner a couple of times. When our waiter found out he insisted on bringing me a tray so I would not go hungry. The excursions are always top notch but sometimes a bit much for someone with disabilities. The entertainment was especially nice on this cruise, a duo that was very talented. If you have never cruised with Viking this is a trip you should take. It is not for children or people that need casinos, bright lights and lots of shipboard activity. If yo want to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace and learn something about what you are seeing in luxury, this is the line for you. Read Less

We chose this cruise for my husband's 70th birthday. The service was superior. Our every need was taken care of and even anticipated! The housekeeping staff was always there for us and kept us supplied with plenty of towels, and bath products. By the end of the cruise we were on a first name basis with the staff and they all knew our likes and dislikes. Out program director, Wes, was the ultimate host. He mingled with every passenger and kept us laughing and smiling. What a gem! He was so well versed on all the cities and their surroundings and could even give us pointers on where to eat and shop. The food was amazing and well varied. There were many "local" selections as well as the standard options such as chicken and steak. The wait staff was willing to bring you almost anything you wanted, even if it wasn't on the menu! All in all, the cruise deserves a superior rating and we would definitely consider another Viking cruise for our next excursion. Read Less

Although we have taken many cruises, this was our first river cruise and our first Viking cruise. We were very impressed. It was so nice being on a smaller boat with just a few hundred people. We felt like we got acquainted with most of them. The service was outstanding! Everyone on board was delightful with deal with- any question was answered with a smile. I especially like the excursions. Each day we had an overview of the city and most days had a chance to explore on our own. An added bonus was the excursion to Cresky Krumlov. It was very interesting. My two favorite events were the night cruise in Budapest and the afternoon cruise down the river. The lights on all the buildings and bridges were magical. The afternoon cruise was relaxing and entertaining. For such a small ship, the entertainment was fantastic. Every night there was something fun happening in the main lounge. The last night on board was our 45th wedding anniversary and the staff did not disappoint. We arranged to have dinner at Manfredi's on the Aquavit Terrace and everything was perfect - the setting, the food and the service. It was a wonderful trip. Read Less

Excellent ship, itinerary, service and overall the very best vacation we have taken in over 40 years. This is absolutely the way to go to relax, enjoy new countries, experience new countries and cultures, enjoy excellent food and service while cruising down the historic Danube. Nothing gets better than a Viking River Cruise! If you have never taken a cruise, this is the one you should take. The big ships are really nice, but the service, personal attention, guest relations and overall atmosphere of the River Cruise is terrific. We have already scheduled our next cruise for next year on the Viking Sigrum. The cost of this cruise is very reasonable and the air fare from Texas was ok. Not much you can do about the high cost of flying but the trip on the Viking Magna was well worth the price and travel requirements. Great Job Viking, see you again in April 2019! Read Less

We wanted to experience the best in cruising which is why we chose Viking River Cruises. Our friends had recommended to us that cruising on a longboat was an unforgettable experience. Therefore, we selected the Danube River Cruise which was our first experience with Viking. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on the Viking Longboat MAGNI and would highly recommend Viking. The service provided was truly exceptional which began with the airport transfer to the hotel, the transfer to our longboat, and the transfer back to the airport. Once we boarded the boat, we were all were treated as if we were royalty. The food on the cruise was truly exceptional with a variety of selections offered. I especially enjoyed tasting the local flavors as we docked in various ports throughout Europe. The wine was complimentary with each meal and the deserts were wonderful. We found all the food service personnel from the waitresses, waiters, cooks, and food director truly exceptional providing exceptional customer service. Everyone wanted to make sure your dining experience was memorable. The Concierge, Program Director, Tour Director, and the Ship's Captain were also very cordial and customer service focused. My wife and I were prejudice; however, we felt our Program Tour Director was the best in the Viking fleet. He provided tons of information and historical references on our cruise as well as providing recommendations of places we should visit at each of our stops. During our stops we took advantage of the optional tour excursions. The local tour guides were exceptionally versed on their local history which increased the educational significance of the trip. For the Danube River Cruise, I would recommend travelers to begin in Passau Germany and end their cruise in Budapest Hungry as the night lights cruising into Budapest were unbelievable as we experienced on the sun deck. What a photographic opportunity. We made so many friends on our cruise which made it that much more enjoyable. We stay in contact with several families and are looking forward with traveling with them in the future with Viking. We were so impressed with the Danube Viking Cruise that we booked two more cruises with Viking: Paris and the Heart of Normandy Cruise in April 2019 and Majestic Fjords and Vibrant Cities in April 2020. Pre and Post stays made a great transition to and from the river cruise. Everything about the Grand European River Cruise was excellent. -The Captain was up early working with his crew. -All staff were very professional and had excellent customer service attitudes. Aleksandra the suite attendant was great, dining staff were great, Gary Nicholson the Cruise Director was a hoot and kept us laughing, entertained and organized on our excursions. -The ship was open, extremely clean and limited to about 180 guests which was fantastic compared to other company ocean cruising which is overcrowded. -We did in 15 days what would probably take us months to do on our own, getting a taste of a wide variety cities, towns, history and culture. -The food was wonderful, great, excellent. My husband was pleased with the variety of offerings. Coffee, Tea and snacks were always available. -The ship was very accommodating with dining for shore excursions that ran throughout the day. We cant really identify one or two excellent points on this trip, because everything was top notch. -Not to mention the beauty of the river with its castles, towns, cathedrals and peoples which made this a trip of a lifetime for us. Viking became our go to vacation group for us, just from this one trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise quite by accident because some friends were already booked and we decided to tag along. We could not have been luckier. We ended up with the last room on the boat, suite 308 - which we loved! The ship is constantly being cleaned, we never had a dirty window. The crew was young and friendly and from a variety of countries through Europe and abroad. We loved the diversity. With the suite you also get free laundry service - which sounds silly - but it was the icing on the cake for me! The space in our room and the additional light was wonderful. I never felt closed in. Our cruise director was Gary and he was incredibly organized, everything went off without a hitch. He made it very clear that the excursions leave on time and don't be late. I appreciated that. Each excursion was wonderful. The daily talks from Gary on what to expect the next day were very helpful. The food was pretty good. Loved breakfast - lunch was only so/so and dinner was sometimes fantastic and sometimes missed the mark. But we weren't there for the food, we were there for the itinerary - which did not disappoint. Each small village after another was unique and wonderful. The bigger cities were also interesting and charming. Loved it - can't wait to go back - I would do the same trip again. Read Less

My husband and I love to travel often taking backroads to truly see the countryside. We have been on a half dozen cruises (big ships) and the large crowds and shuffling of people just doesn't appeal to us. A good friend had suggested a European River Cruise and we had seen some ads for Viking Cruises. Our trip was a spur of the moment decision, literally, and we have no regrets, in fact, we sing the praises of our Viking Grand European Tour. We flew to Miami from St. Croix, and then took advantage of the 2 day pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam. What an incredible City with its marvelous transportation system, open markets and friendly people. We took a trip to Kuekenhof Gardens and I spent hours photographing the colorful tulips. The Hotel Okura was exceptional and the service outstanding. Departure went so smoothly, with our luggage being delivered to our cabin, a warm greeting and introduction by staff of the adventure ahead of us. The ship was well designed with spacious lounges, large dining room and lots of areas where you could find a cozy chair to read and relax. Our standard room was comfortable with ample storage. Even the bathroom had a good sized shower and plenty of hot water. The food service on this ship was outstanding with so many choices and great service. The buffet always had local delicacies and the presentations were photo worthy. The wait staff genuinely wanted to make our trip memorable and went out of their way to take care of us. I was amazed at the number of excursions offered and always, there were free options at each port and all were well worth attending. In fact, the choices were exception and it was hard to choose what to do. The walking tours were my favorite as we got to really see the towns and villages we visited. While on board, there was daily entertainment and lectures and evening gatherings. Our Program/Tour Director, Gary, was fantastic and his sense of humor kept us entertained. He was a great resource and truly contributed to the success of our trip. To me, one of the best parts of the trip, were the many new friends I have added to my life. With the limited number of travelers on the ship, we had the opportunity to meet the majority of people over the course of the tour. After a few days of sharing meals and excursions, we developed a group of friends that enjoyed the same interests. Months after our tour ended, we still stay in touch and one couple plans to come visit us. Just 3 months have passed and we have now signed up for a new cruise....CUBA. This time it will be on an ocean liner but smaller and more intimate. We look forward to another trip with Viking! Kudos to all of the staff and management for making our trip one of a lifetime! Since we had never been on any ocean or river cruise, we didn't know what to expect. The Viking experience set the bar higher for traveling again! Even though we had taken several trips with Trafalgar and one with Globis and thoroughly enjoyed these land trips, we prefer being on the cruise where we didn't have to pack and repack. Plus we were treated like royalty with the extras of the warm wash cloths and canapés when we returned to the ship after an excursion, loved the educational presentations and entertainment of the countries we were traveling to, and eating the ethnic foods of each country. This was the first part of a six week European Adventure which also included a ocean cruise and a number a rail trips. After two nights in Budapest at the Budapest Hilton in the castle district we boarded Viking Longship Magni and the real relaxing trip commenced. From the moment we approached the Magni we were made to feel welcome and after a welcome drink and brief introduction we were escorted to our cabin. The professionalism of the crew was outstanding, so friendly and anticipating, it was a joy to be with them. All the major activities like primary tours at each port, where included and organised so professionally. They had us in groups according to our physical capability, all the tour guides where issued with 'paddles' to hold up which included our group number and we all had 'Quietbox' receivers to easily hear the guide and if we strayed a little we could still hear what the guide was saying. Our cruise director Stein was exceptional and so knowledgeable and ensured everyone knew exactly what to expect, where to be and made sure we all had a great time. The meals where exceptional and well themed with plenty of choices and I loved the little 'specials' that occurred on a regular basis. Viking have the 'Grandfather' rights to the Danube, so, we always seemed to berth right in the middle of the ports/towns we where visiting and saw other brand riverships berthed some distance from the ports. Viking also have there own coaches at many of the ports and these were of very high quality and always spotlessly clean and well presented. The 1% gripe - many of us liked to get up at about 6.00am for a thirty minute plus brisk walk around the walking track located above the cabins on Level 3. We were on Level 3 and my wife never heard any noise, however, some precious person complained and then we could not walk until after 8.00am, however, slowly we all started walking a bit earlier than 8 as the cruise went along!! I could go on and on about how great the cruise was, however, just do yourself a favour and choose a Viking cruise. Read Less
