We chose this cruise quite by accident because some friends were already booked and we decided to tag along. We could not have been luckier. We ended up with the last room on the boat, suite 308 - which we loved! The ship is constantly being cleaned, we never had a dirty window. The crew was young and friendly and from a variety of countries through Europe and abroad. We loved the diversity. With the suite you also get free laundry service - which sounds silly - but it was the icing on the cake for me! The space in our room and the additional light was wonderful. I never felt closed in. Our cruise director was Gary and he was incredibly organized, everything went off without a hitch. He made it very clear that the excursions leave on time and don't be late. I appreciated that. Each excursion was wonderful. The daily talks from Gary on what to expect the next day were very helpful. The food was pretty good. Loved breakfast - lunch was only so/so and dinner was sometimes fantastic and sometimes missed the mark. But we weren't there for the food, we were there for the itinerary - which did not disappoint. Each small village after another was unique and wonderful. The bigger cities were also interesting and charming. Loved it - can't wait to go back - I would do the same trip again. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and first time to Europe and we did not want to travel on our own. A river cruise was very appealing as we aren't ocean cruise fans. The itinerary was wonderful and we planned for a year! We felt "looked after" from the minute we arrived at the baggage claim area, actually in Prague where we did a wonderful pre-extension. Transfer to the hotel, then from Prague to Budapest was seamless. The speediest check-in ever experienced was a joy. All the tours along the way were narrated by experienced local guides and very well done. We loved the size of the ship, the accommodations, the common rooms. Tasteful. The dining experience was top-notch, beautiful to look at as well as to eat. Our chef, Gabor, was wonderful and entertaining. The wait staff remembered your name from the first introduction - no small feat when we moved around to different tables. Our program director, Marek Snelly was the BEST. Entertaining, witty, knowledgeable, a most wonderful man who made the trip extra special. The evening entertainment was spot-on for the locations. The service from everyone was impeccable, always smiling faces, anticipating every need or desire. All the ports held their own magic from tiny towns to the larger ones. WE POSITIVELY LOVED THIS CRUISE!! Read Less

I wanted to experience the tulip fields of Holland. And they were magnificent!!! The tour of the windmills was also a draw. Loved it!! Only wish we had more time in the tulip fields and gardens. The Viking cruise itself was terrific, as usual. The attention to detail was amazing. For example, one afternoon when we returned to the ship after a walking tour, we were handed a pure white tulip. I thought the gesture was lovely, but also thought, "What am I going to do with this tulip?" When we got to our rooms, there on the counter was a crystal bud vase! The room cabin, the dining room and the front desk and concierge service were impeccable. The food was just yummy--lots of selections at every meal. Our veranda room had plenty of space. The itinerary was busy, but not too busy. We especially enjoyed visiting with the locals in Hoorn. We got to spend an hour in a home and asked questions about life in Hoorn and were served tea and apple strudel!!! Although we booked on March 1st, for a departure date of March 31st, we were amazed at how smoothly our booking process went. Thank you, Viking, for a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

This was the first part of a six week European Adventure which also included a ocean cruise and a number a rail trips. After two nights in Budapest at the Budapest Hilton in the castle district we boarded Viking Longship Magni and the real relaxing trip commenced. From the moment we approached the Magni we were made to feel welcome and after a welcome drink and brief introduction we were escorted to our cabin. The professionalism of the crew was outstanding, so friendly and anticipating, it was a joy to be with them. All the major activities like primary tours at each port, where included and organised so professionally. They had us in groups according to our physical capability, all the tour guides where issued with 'paddles' to hold up which included our group number and we all had 'Quietbox' receivers to easily hear the guide and if we strayed a little we could still hear what the guide was saying. Our cruise director Stein was exceptional and so knowledgeable and ensured everyone knew exactly what to expect, where to be and made sure we all had a great time. The meals where exceptional and well themed with plenty of choices and I loved the little 'specials' that occurred on a regular basis. Viking have the 'Grandfather' rights to the Danube, so, we always seemed to berth right in the middle of the ports/towns we where visiting and saw other brand riverships berthed some distance from the ports. Viking also have there own coaches at many of the ports and these were of very high quality and always spotlessly clean and well presented. The 1% gripe - many of us liked to get up at about 6.00am for a thirty minute plus brisk walk around the walking track located above the cabins on Level 3. We were on Level 3 and my wife never heard any noise, however, some precious person complained and then we could not walk until after 8.00am, however, slowly we all started walking a bit earlier than 8 as the cruise went along!! I could go on and on about how great the cruise was, however, just do yourself a favour and choose a Viking cruise. Read Less

This was our first river cruise -- the Grand European -- and we went in with limited expectations, although at the steep rates we did expect the best. We weren't disappointed. No complaints possible about onboard conditions and treatment -- everything was well-maintained and the staff were extremely helpful and cheerful. The food was also superb, thanks to chef Michel and his team. It was hard not to over-indulge. Wine was included with lunch and dinner. Program director Claus ran a good tour and onboard event program as well. Pianist Jerzy provided good lounge entertainment and there were some special concerts a few evenings. There were many activities, but no feeling of pressure to participate. It was an enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere and we had a lot of fun. We travelled with friends, which added to the enjoyment, and we met lots of other interesting people on board. A lot of the actual travel took place overnight, to permit shore stops and tours, with a limited amount of daytime cruising through the most interesting sections of the Rhine and the Danube. Most of the onshore tours were included, but there were a few optional extras. We chose a few and were happy with our choices (e.g. bus to Rothenburg, concert in Vienna, wine tour in Krems). Our shipboard days were very full, but you could always choose not to go onshore for a tour. There was plenty of relaxation time. We also took extensions in both Amsterdam and Prague. There was more free time in the extensions, but the tours were a little tougher, especially in Prague, where we had a very long and gruelling first day. Fitness involved walking, since there were no exercise facilities on board apart from a walking track on the top deck. Tours at the stops were mostly on foot, and many on cobbled streets. Some were quite lengthy, a challenge for some passengers. I know I was stretched at times, having arthritis. They did offer some slower-paced tours in certain spots, as well as some tougher trips in others. It balanced out pretty well, but I would like to have seen a lot more information ahead of time in order to pace myself better. As well, they always give distances in times, and everything seems to be "5 to 10 minutes"...whether it could be 5, or 25, depending on your degree of fitness. A distance in kilometres would be more helpful, with information on the degree of incline and the frequency of stairs. We had our flights and transfers arranged by Viking as well, and another time would probably do our own. Transfers were "legal" but very tight, with little leeway for delays or getting lost in airports like Frankfurt. We got where we were going, with our luggage, but it was the most stressful part of the trip. We found Viking responsive to comments, both good and critical, and felt we got good value for the trip as a whole. We would consider travelling with Viking again, possibly on one of their new ocean trips. Read Less

We had a wonderful time! Our favorite vacation ever. The cruise folks were great! From our meal servers to our room maid to the managers to everyone, we were treated extremely well. The food on board was always varied and of high quality. The meals were some of the best relaxing time, a chance to chat with fellow travelers and exchange experiences. The visits to the cities on the way were always educational and well planned. The guides did a super job. As we review our pictures, we re-experience the whole trip and can't wait until we can schedule another cruise. I could go on for a long time about all the folks, visits, and memories we enjoyed, but I will end this review by simply saying "Thank you for providing a high point in our travel experiences." This cruise was fantastic and I would highly recommend Viking. We travelled as a couple and weren’t sure what to expect but I have to say that we had one of the best holidays we have ever had, we met some fantastic people, had some great laughs, saw a myriad of interesting places, ate far too much and thoroughly enjoyed everything. The Magni was first class, it was pretty new and everything was modern. We had to pass through the Viking Sun several times when we were moored together and the Sun didn’t look half as nice. Our room was cute, had everything you needed and was just large enough to squeeze down each size of the bed and into the bathroom. I would suggest booking the best room you can afford however you are more likely to get a good deal on rooms on the bottom floor, just be aware there is no view and its fun watching the world pass by as you relax on your balcony while sailing along. The staff were lovely (big cheers to Roos the events lady who was outstanding), everyone was polite, helpful and kind and they seemed to work very hard. Bedrooms were cleaned and tidied twice a day, the beds were comfy, you could just about fit into the bathroom, the heated bathroom floor was lovely as were the toiletries. There is only one small washing line in the bathroom, we took along our own line and this, added to the existing one, meant we had no problems hanging our daily washing and the heated floor helped dry it overnight. We found the food outstanding, there was plenty of choice and nothing too outlandish. We weren’t hungry once, between meals there’s a coffee and cookies station with a choice of teas/coffee/cookies and even honey and lemon. Very impressive. The mooring in tandem thing was probably the only thing I didn’t like about the cruise, especially if you have booked a room with a view and all you can see is into the cabin on the boat next to you. This means you have to have your curtains closed. One time we opened our curtains and scared a couple on the next boat who were lying on the bed We were lucky in Budapest and had a view of the Chain Bridge which was out of this world, especially when its lit up at night - I would have been pretty peeved if we had been on the other side of the boat. It seemed to me that the left hand (port) side was given the best mooring views – this is the side which has the posh double cabins on the top floor so I suspect they pander to them first (which is fair as they pay the most). However on the second floor this side is all French balconies so you can get the best views and not pay full balcony prices. This is just my experience and not necessarily company policy. I should also mention that we were originally booked on the Viking Baldur but were advised a week before we left that the Baldur was stuck on the other side of low water and so wouldn’t be able to get to Budapest. The Baldur people were ferried by coach between 2 ports and had to change from the Baldur to the Magni. Be aware that the river level can impact your holiday. Luckily we were fine, smooth sailing all the way. Read Less

Our first time in Europe and with Viking River Cruises. What an experience! Our stateroom was great, but we were barely in our room since we took advantage of the included tours and most of the optional ones. Our guides were of high quality. They knew the subject matter and many were very entertaining too. The tour groups were small enough that we were able to move efficiently around each town. The use of individual headsets for each member of the group was very effective. We could easily hear the tour guides without having to be right next to them. We really appreciated seeing the palaces, castles, and churches. A lot of walking and a few days of rain, but we were prepared thanks to the trip material sent to us in advance. Our cruise director, Klause, was excellent. His daily briefings were very informative. The food was fantastic! The chef and his staff prepared a variety of regional foods that made it hard to choose which dish to pick. We ordered several dishes we may not have normally tried, but we had confidence in our chef and were never disappointed. I can't say enough about our wait staff! They were very efficient and served us as if we were guests at their homes. Just a few days into the cruise they knew our preferences in wine, soft drinks, and water. Even though they were busy we seldom had to wait for anything. We extended our trip by adding two days to the beginning of our trip in Amsterdam. Somehow we left our camera at the Radisson Blue hotel as we were transferring our luggage to the shuttle that took us to our ship. I contacted someone at the counter of the ship as soon as we noticed the camera was gone a few hours later. He contacted the hotel staff, but they offered little help. On advice of an experienced cruise passenger we contacted our Hotel Manager, Guiome, the next day. He started making contacts immediately and worked with Klause on the issue. Klause continued to make calls throughout the rest of the cruise. He kept us informed on a daily basis, but we were unable to recover our camera even though we had several reports that the camera was found and shipped to our next port. We really appreciated Klause's efforts to recover our camera. Even though we lost our camera and two days worth of pictures our cruise was a fantastic experience. We are continually looking at other Viking river cruises and ocean cruises.   Read Less

Our ship was changed from the Baldur to the Magni due to low water. The crew was magnificent, the food was exemplary, and the tours we were able to accomplish were great. Our biggest issue was the ongoing mechanical difficulties that resulted in a cancelled shore excursion, extra busing, offsite dining due to loss of electrical power. We missed part of the castles while cruising and the Lorelei rock. We also rejoined our ship at some unscheduled docking locations. Our final day ended at 3:00 in the morning. This was a very short 15th day. The crew was very helpful, extremely courteous, and tried to make amends for the ongoing mechanical issues. This was our first cruise with Viking. We were expecting a perfect trip because of the new ships, but were a little disappointed. Read Less

Wonderful trip! This is a great way to see a large area of Europe . The ship was immaculate. The food offered a wide variety of regional food as well as traditional favorites of steak, chicken and fish. The food was very fresh and offered healthy choices. Excellent!!The crew was so kind and wantied to make you feel welcomed. They greated you with a smile wanting to make sure your trip was perfect. The tours in the towns we visited were lead by local area guides who were able to give you so much history of the area. They all seemed so proud to share their town. We have traveled in Europe several times both with a group and on our own. This cruise provided a perfect blend of both styles of travel. The mornings we had tours and afternoons we could explore on our own. We plan to go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

This being our 4th cruise with Viking we were prepared for the varied well designed meals, the wonderful way the crew answers questions and offers solutions for any situation. We have been in Amsterdam several times and understood the openness by which the Dutch accept different life styles. We understand the Euro and the union that was formed throughout Europe, we were aware of the ease of getting from the airport to the city and the small crowded streets as we moved our luggage to an apartment for a pre-three-night stay. But having never been in the Netherlands in April, we were not prepared for the beautiful fields of flowers and the crowded Keukenhof gardens. We have never seen that many buses in our lives. But April in Holland is not to be missed. It's truly an explosion of color, taste, and emotions as you wind your way through the wonderful canals and streets of the various little villages. Some shops and cafes were closed, but you could find a cup of coffee or a souvenir somewhere, and at the end of each stop there was a friendly crew to assist you on board and prepare you for the next delightful surprise at the dining table. We've booked a Viking Cruise for September 2015 and look forward to all the quality it offers. Viking is truly the ruler of the rivers in Europe. We hope each year will give us another of their wonderful voyages. Read Less

Since this year was fraught with lock strikes, high water and the possibility of bad weather we were a little skeptical that this cruise would go without a problem. Also, the airfare was very reasonable through Viking and we were a little skeptical about our flights. Well, there was absolutely no problem at all. The flights were direct from Dallas to London then to Munich and back to London from Budapest. Timing between flights was excellent, gave us enough time to navigate Heathrow. The Magni was beautiful. We had the Explorer Suite and it was such a luxury for us. More room than we really needed as we were not in our cabin much. The 110 outlets were a plus, very easy to plug in Ipad, Iphones. The safe was large and held the ipads, etc. Heated floors in the bathroom were great, even though we did not have any ice or snow on the trip. The food was good. Enjoyed the lobster and the filet with foie gras. A couple of the nights the pork dishes were good, but not great, however my husband had the steak most nights (optional) and it was good and cooked to his tastes. The wait staff from Pam who poured the drinks and wine to Karyzma who waited on us was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. They went out of there way to learn our names and what we liked. My husband had his coke light even before sitting down. Made us want to eat in the dining room and at Karyzma's tables only. Friends traveling with us wanted to go to the Opera in Budapest (we had already gotten our tickets on line) and utilized the Concierege. That was done without a worry and they had great seats. Marek, the Cruise Director was fantastic. His Mozart show is not to be missed. The information he gives is correct and done in a manner anyone can enjoy and learn. I would love to see his Dracula show sometime, I can only wonder. Tibor was our cabin steward and worked hard and had taken care of our needs. All the staff was great and personable. Kyle did a great Tina Turner impersonation. The ports were the usual. But in Vienna they had a by subway walking tour of Vienna, which we took (we had been to Vienna several times, but not on the subway). We now feel comfortable on the subway there and got to see the Schmetterling Haus (butterfly house) and the Royal Treasury at the Hofburg. The hotel, Le Meridien in Budapest was beautiful and perfectly located for our Opera excursion. It was a short walk to the Opera, and the Christmas Market around the hotel was still open till Jan. 1. In short, this trip was perfect from start to finish. Weather was good, river levels good, no lock strikes and the ship functioned well. This is our fourth Viking trip and most of them had a small glitch or two due to weather or water levels, but we enjoyed those trips too. Thank you Viking and the staff of the Magni for a great Christmas to New Years cruise that we won't forget for a long time. Read Less

We just returned home from our most excellent river cruise. There is something to be said about a new ship - Magni being only in service for 3 month was beautiful, clean and decorated for the Holidays. We found the staff to be absolutely wonderful. Everyone on the ship made us feel welcome. This was to be our Thanksgiving Cruise, however as it turned out it was also a Christmas Market Cruise - all the Christmas Markets were open or just opening... We were very lucky as far as the weather goes - it was cold but sunny most of the trip - not a drop of rain was to be seen the entire time - we heard that the people on the previous cruise were not so lucky, as it rained every day. The trip started out with a greeting from the staff and a glass of champagne and the news that we had been upgraded to the 3rd deck, can you say room with a Balcony? Amazing - the room was small but beautifully laid out. We had sufficient storage for all our clothes and the suitcases fit under the bed. Bathroom was tiny but big enough for our use. No clingy shower curtains here, but a glass door separating the toilet from the shower. Food on the ship was also amazing. Breakfast was a buffet (or you could order), Lunch was also a buffet served both in the dining room and in the Sun Room. Beer and wine was served for Lunch and Dinner. I am not a beer drinker but had several glasses at lunch time and it was excellent, in my opinion. Dinner consisted of three courses - the main course always included a vegetarian meal (which was great for me). Wine was flowing freely..... Tours consisted mainly of bus and walking tours, and almost each tour included a Christmas Market with the wonderful smells of Christmas filling the air and the hot wine (gluewein) calling my name. Tours were well organized and attended well. Each evening we had a meeting to go over the next days events and some talk or entertainment from the different countries we visited. A shout out to our wonderful and amazing Cruise Director who went above and beyond organizing everything. The passengers on this cruise were a delightful, well traveled group and we enjoyed meeting and dinning with many of them. We got lucky at the Captains Farewell dinner and were invited to dine with the Captain and the Hotel Director. It goes without saying that the behavior of the staff reflects on how the Captain and Hotel Director treat them and this was one very happy group of employees. Places we visited: Passau - a very cute town that was still recovering from high flood waters Salzburg - a wonderful city with lots of history and the ride to the city which took about 1 1/2 hours was beautiful. Landscape covered in snow covered mountains. would not have missed this for the world. Melk - amazing tour through Melk Abby and of course don't forget to try the Apricot Liquor that the town is famous for.... Vienna - what can one say about this city? A must see for history and music buffs. There were several Xmas markets open but if you are there on a Saturday, beware - shopping is almost impossible with all the people at the markets it's hard to see anything - still an experience you have to try. Bratislava- Slovakia is a fairly new country and is still building itself up - it's charming to walk through a town that has not yet reached the 21st century.... Budapest- Wow, so much to see and do in this gem of a town. Highly recommended for all you History Buffs out there. I hope this makes each and every one of you reading this review want to go on this amazing journey just ones in your life time. As for my husband and I - we shall try and go again....soon... I have never done a cruise before, ocean or otherwise, but my friend and I who are both in our 50s decided to do the Passau-Budapest Danube Waltz. The advertisements were compelling, but they don't do justice to the stunning sights. Our flight to Munich was great; a Viking agent picked us up immediately and put us on a cushy bus to Passau....absolutely no problems. The boat, the Magni, is clean, new, tasteful, and we were greeted with a champagne cocktail. Our room was ready when we arrived, even though we were there before check-in time. It had ample room for our luggage and ourselves and was chic and well-designed--down comforter and smart finishes. No wasted space. A huge flat screen TV that offered CNN, BBC, and a few other channels, (that seemed to show American crime dramas only), as well as the weather, movies, and travel videos. The floor in the bathroom is heated!. We had the French Balcony room and could open our door and look out whenever we wanted. I was surprised at how quiet it was. And smooth too--I couldn't tell when we were moving or docked. The food was delicious--mind you I am not a connoisseur---and certainly not adventurous with food---so I was pleased to see food I recognized. American cuisine along with local/European dishes. They have GREAT coffee machines--espresso, cappuccino, coffee, tea, hot chocolate---anytime of day or night. Everyday there are activities planned--mostly bus or walking tours of various places--but you are free to go off and do what you want. I am not much of a group-tourist--I prefer to go on my own, but I did find that the 45 minute bus and/or walking tours did give me lots of information and afterwards we would go exploring on our own. Don't underestimate the places on the tour. Our first site in Passau was a cathedral. I yawned at the thought, but the place just floored us! Baroque style (get used to it--it's everywhere in Europe) and we even got an organ concert! There are other excursions you can do. We did Schonbrunn Palace but I wouldn't do it again. It was crowded, vast, and held so much ornateness and over-the-topness that I became overwhelmed after the first few rooms. It seemed to me that the stops got better as we went--first Passau, then Melk (whoever heard of Melk? It has an abbey that is nicer than anything you have ever seen--who knew?), Salzburg, then Vienna. I didn't think there could be anything grander than Vienna---until Budapest appeared. We arrived at night and the place was lit up like a birthday cake for God! DO NOT MISS IT. The service onboard is impeccable. Rooms cleaned thoroughly. Food served quickly and special requests honored gracefully. Every one of the staff, from the program director to housekeeping, were friendly and attentive. Bed turn-down service with next day's itinerary on your bed when you come back from dinner. I had never been treated so well and at the end of the cruise, I didn't want to leave. That is service. Okay now for the downside :# 1. We went to shop the Christmas markets, but everything was way too expensive. Wait until Bratislava or Budapest to shop--prices are much more reasonable. But it was still fun drinking their mulled wine and soaking up the atmosphere. #2. If your airfare is included and Viking is making your reservation, you cannot upgrade your seats beyond economy 'comfort' class. The seats were roomier but not like in first class. Overall, we had a great cruise. I have no other cruises to compare it with, but at this point, I don't plan on cruising with anyone but Viking again.   Read Less
