My wife and I had a very nice cruise on the Viking Lofn in June, 2019. The staff were excellent, although we had to grin at the cruise director's obvious over-hype on occasion. We had one management level staff member in the dining area seem to "put down" a guest at our table when she ordered a steak rather than the suggested entre- that didn't set well with any of us who heard his statement about "Americans." (He did apologize to her the next day at dinner.) Honestly, the food was good, but not great in our opinion. We've had better. As an example, the scnitzel we had at a nice restaurant in Rudesheim au Rhine was much better than the one we had on the Lofn; twice as large, very tender, with fries and a nice salad- all for less than $12 US. The tours were very nice, but felt rushed. Occasionally we had time to spend on our own, but nof often. My Black Forest hike lasted all of 30 minutes, yet the bus ride there was 2 hours round-trip. Our tour of Marksburg castle was limited by the many other tours on-site. We rarely had more than a few minutes in a room or location, We did get a few minutes at the end of our tour to buy a Coke and sit on a bench. We don't blame Viking for this at all; there were hundreds of tourists on-site while we were there. The Bruhl tour was fine, but understand that one cannot take any photos of the beautiful interiors of the castle or hunting lodge. One must buy postcards of the interiors. I could add more to this review, but won't. We had a very nice time. Will we do it again? No, we won't. Are we glad we did it, yes. Viking did a very good job. The staff onboard, with one exception, was superb. The Rhine Getaway should have been a 10-day trip in our opinion, Thank you to Viking, the staff of the Lofn, Viking's staff in Amsterdam (where we took a wonderful 2-day pre-cruise stay at the Pulitzer Amsterdam) and all the tour guides. We would rate this cruise a solid four of five. Read Less

We had sailed with Viking on the Danube and were pleased with our experience so we picked them again for a Rhine River cruise and we're glad we did. Our balcony cabin was small, as are most river cruise cabins, but there was ample storage. The service was outstanding; we would like Marlon, our waiter, to come and live with us. He knew all of our drink preferences after the first day and, when one of our party became ill, he never failed to ask about his progress. We were very lucky: the water level and the weather were close to perfect. We spent most of the afternoon of the Middle Rhine sailing on the top deck and Viking showed great attention to details: we had maps that showed all of the 31 castles we sailed by, the program director did a commentary, we were given ice water, shade umbrellas, and ice cream (the sun was very strong that day - we all had red skin on areas where we failed to use sunblock). Most of the excursions were very good; the one exception being the Black Forest where it takes much too long on the bus to spend an hour at a very touristy visitors center (let's not talk about the rush hour traffic we hit on the way back). We would love to travel with Viking again. Read Less

I chose this cruise so my wife and I could spend some time with our daughter and her family after the cruise in Basel. All-in-all we were very happy with this cruise and how Viking took care of us. We spent a day in Amsterdam prior to departure to get over the jet lag flying overnight from Chicago. The ship and facilities were in very good condition. We are mostly experienced in ocean cruising with about a dozen overall cruises, but this was only our second river cruise, both with Viking. Viking did an excellent job navigating the Rhine as it was at a historically low water level, given the drought in Europe last summer. At one point, Viking thought we were going to have to be off-boarded and transported to another ship to get past the most critically low-level areas. However, they got through with apparently only a few inches of clearance and it was really cause for celebration to avoid that possible obstacle and delay! The stops and excursions were all excellent. Typically, we are willing on cruises to pay extra for excursions, but on this trip, what was included in the base price were excellent, and we didn't upgrade a single excursion! Very unusual for us, yet we felt we saw everything we wanted to. The areas for improvement for us are in evening entertainment and the ability to have room service for your meals. The previous river cruise with Viking had significant evening entertainment which we didn't feel this cruise offered. Also, the balconies are very nice on the ship and we love to have our meals brought in to be consumed while we sail and we often do on our ocean cruises...unfortunately, Viking doesn't offer that on their river cruises, that I am aware of. A third complaint is that this river ship did not offer a small gym or workout room. Other than those complaints, we were very happy with the ship, the staff, the service, and the entire experience with Viking. Read Less

We had tried a river cruise with another carrier and were very much disappointed. Subsequently we were very impressed with a ocean cruise aboard Viking Sky and decided to determine whether a Viking river cruise measured up to the ocean experience. It did from an excellent crew to a great cabin complete with a sitting balcony from which we thoroughly enjoyed the passingscene. All of the shore adventures were sheparded by delightful guides that made visits to local restaurants and shops memorable and full of fun. The food aboard ship was tasty and attractively served by a staff that were clearly attuned to making each meal special. We especially enjoyed the option of formal or informal dining. The entertainment was delightful and well attuned to each point along our journey. Each day was very special because of the care and planning that was evident throughout every aspect of our river cruise. Best of all was our extended tour through Switzerland. Our guide anticipated our every need and some we didn't know we had. She was articulate and added much to each of our adventures. We didn't even have to think of handling our luggage for the entirety of our extended tour. We were particularily impressed by the thoughtfulness of Viking in handling our miss of the ship at the outset because of a 7 hour delay in our arrival due to our air carrier's equipment problems . We were suprised when met at Amsterdam very late in the evening by a Viking rep who saw us to a convenient hotel and arranged to have us motored to catch the ship the next morning. We were warmly welcomed when we arrived at the ship's first stop with the result that the trials of the previous day were quicky forgotten. We have already committed to a future Viking ocean cruise aboard Orion commencing in Japan with a shore extension under Viking's direction and we are considering another river cruise in Russia. That says it all. We are very pleased with what we have found in Viking care and service Read Less

Our second Viking River Cruise. Again, the trip was outstanding and, as usual, too short. This time we added both beginning and ending extra days and added every optional tour we could cram into the available time. All optional tours were wee-ll worth the money and enhanced our trip. Highly recommended! The extra time before our cruise was spent in Lucerne and was truly spectacular. We loved all aspects of Switzerland! The cruise was, as usual, well organized, the food on the Lofn was exceptional, the crew was very efficient while still being friendly and chatty with us poor Americans. The cruise down the Rhine was typically spectacular, with yet another castle every kilometer. (Our cruise director, from our first cruise, called it an "ABC Tour", meaning "Another Bloody Castle". We spent extra days in Amsterdam at the end because we didn't before and missed seeing a lot. This time, we spent extra time with all the optional tours possible, sort of like taking a drink out of a Dutch fire hose. Well done Viking! You have more than exceeded our expectations. Any organization of this complexity requires massive coordination. It boggles the mind that you continue to pull this off with such skill while make it look so easy. Again, WELL DONE!! Our next Viking trip will probably be an ocean cruise in 2019. the Baltic Cruise is at the top of our list right now. Read Less

Interesting, knowledgeable and fun. Boat crew very professional and pleasant. We were treated royally. We liked it so much that we are going on a Viking ocean cruise in 3 weeks. The cabins were great although we didn't spend much time in them because we busy with tours and activities. Food was superb served by attentive and polite wait staff. They go out of their way to make sure everyone is happy at all meals. Tours/excursions were very interesting and informative. Ground transportation was very comfortable and efficient. We felt comfortable and secure everywhere we went thanks to thorough communication by the boats personnel. I highly recommend Viking River Cruises. We will most likely take more. The Rhine Cruise in spring is beautiful. We're anxiously awaiting our Viking Ocan Cruise in 3 weeks. I'm sure it will be great just based on how much we liked the river cruise! Read Less

We had a non-stop flight from Portland, Oregon.Viking met us at the airport in Amsterdam and took us by coach to the Lofn. At the end of the cruise In Basel Viking took us by coach to the airport and walked us to where we check in for departure. They were there throughout the journey. This is a lot smaller ship than the big sea ships so more contact with the crew. The crew was great from the Captain on down. The cabin was roomy enough with the 2 beds. No balcony which was fine, the window was at water level. Just right to view the swans. There was always a choice at dinner time between local food or American. It was fun to try something different. The tours were set up with local people that knew their area well. It was wonderful to have a shore excursion included in every stop at no extra charge. They also had different excursions you could pay to join. The "Leisure Group" was great for people with walking challenges. We avoided stairs and walked slower, but still saw all the sites. I am 67yrs and my husband is 71 yrs. He has two new hips and he was able to enjoy all the excursions we went on. If the walking is not smooth, they let us know in advance so we could decide to try or not. The ship looked bran new. It was in excellent condition. Always very clean and comfortable. Everything about the trip was beyond our expectations. We will definitely travel with them again. Read Less

Just cozy and comfortable! Viking took care of absolutely everything imaginable! Loved the itineraries and especially appreciated the bottles of water as we left the ship on our excursions! The cruise director (Gavin - I believe was his name) was a pure delight!! The cabins and the bathrooms were a wonderful size. Really appreciated the glass shower stall. We enjoyed the excursions and the point of interests. Our guide was very courteous and knowledgeable. The cruise director always made sure we are in the group when we go out on tour and when we go back to the ship. The food is fabulous, the entertainment is very nice. We went on this cruise because it was a good way to see Europe without having to plan out the whole trip. The ship was great! All of the crew was AMAZING. The food was really good too! Our family ate on the boat for almost every meal. There were always so many options to pick from and the waiters really took the time to get to know you. We also met most of our friends during meal times. EVERYONE that we talked to on the boat was so nice. We made so many new friends who we are planning on visiting in the future. The excursions were fantastic. It was helpful that we had a guided tour at each location because it helped us know where we were and where we needed to meet to get back on the boat. I would recommend Viking to anyone because it was effortless to plan. The whole trip was planned out for you and all you had to do was show up. My husband and I chose Viking because of their excellent reputation and cruise destinations. It was also important to us that at least one shore excursion a day was included in the price of the cruise. The service is top notch and very friendly. Everything is well organized and efficient. We were in an A cabin that had all the amenities we needed. It was very small, but we spent little time in the room except to sleep. On our next Viking cruise, we will not book morning and afternoon excursions. We were so tired that we never once were able to stay up for the after dinner entertainment. The shore excursions were all excellent experiences, with only one exception. ( A wine tasting tour that was mostly watching a video) The guides were always so passionate and informative. This was so refreshing and charming. Make sure you have very comfortable shoes and expect lots of walking. The food was always good and plentiful, but in no way gourmet. Sorry foodies. It is nice that beer and wine is included with meals, but I was disappointed in the Malbec red wine that was served. It was very harsh and not to my taste, and was the only red wine that was offered without additional cost. I would highly recommend Viking to my friends and family. We booked a two day extension in Lucerne, Switzerland and set sail later in the week from Basel. Lucerne was beautiful and our Viking host was welcoming and gave us a great walking tour of Old Town. We met happy, friendly fellow travelers on the ship and enjoyed the attentive service of the ship's staff. The cabin was comfortable and the food was excellent with more than one dining option for breakfast and lunch. Even though this was a "small" ship, there were many places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, the view, a conversation, or a book. The excursions in each port were well-planned and guided by knowledgeable local citizens. It was definitely a memorable experience! The Viking Lofn staff and crew were simply amazing, very friendly and outgoing. They made sure that this vacation was incredible. The only hitch in the vacation came directly from Viking, and that was the flight arrangements. Flying from Los Angeles into Paris, and only having a 1-1/2 hour layover does not give enough time for any mishaps in the schedule. We missed our connecting flight to Amsterdam by 10 minutes, since we had left Los Angeles 45 minutes late. We eventually made it to Amsterdam and stayed at the Movenpick Hotel right at the port. I had ordered the IAmsterdam cards for everyone in our party, which allows bus/trains etc. Well worth the price since we arrived 3 days before the cruise. We fell in love with Amsterdam. Would definitely go back there. When we boarded the Lofn we had a Veranda B cabin. The cabin is beautifully laid out, plenty of storage. We enjoyed the balcony, sitting out and watching the swans, and scenery. Some of the locks we went thru we saw from our balcony, quite an experience. Our room steward learned out habits quickly and made sure that we always had fresh water and an ice bucket filled with ice. Cabin was spotless! The shore excursions were fun and informative. We did do a lot of walking, though there was a leisure group, for those who had trouble with stairs, and hills. Most of what they saw were the same things but just easier access. The personal communication systems work great. Was able to hear the tour guides clearly, could even wander a little and be able to still hear them. Food was wonderful, if we wanted only appetizers they brought them, can't decide between two things, no problem. Wine and beer were good. We didn't get the silver package, if you like mixed drinks it might be worth the price. Most everyone on board was over 55. The ship is really not set up for children. Read Less

We booked our Viking River Cruise well over a year before we left on this cruise. We were very much looking forward to this adventure and to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. This cruise did not disappoint. I must admit it was a little rocky start when we arrived into Amsterdam and there were some mishaps beginning with the ship which was actually in Rotterdam and we were bused there, because of the inability for this "longship" to dock in Amsterdam due to a boating regatta in Amsterdam. A couple other issues while waiting at the hotel made us wonder. HOWEVER, once we arrived on our ship The Lofn, settled into our beautiful cabin, after having the entire crew welcome us on board, it all became very wonderful. The crew, the guides at each port, the views out the large ship windows, the service, our Program Director, our cabin person, wait staff, desk staff were all more than helpful throughout our journey on both the Lofn and the Vidar which was a ship change due to low water levels on the Danube. The crew made that pretty seamless too, as no one was looking forward to packing up and moving. But, the crew made it so easy and even all the new crew on the Vidar were doing all they could to make us comfortable. The sights, the countries, the guides who were so knowledgeable made our adventure just fabulous. Thank you Viking for a 50th Wedding Anniversary that will always be remembered. Read Less

We chose the Grand European for our 30th anniversary and wanted a more leisurely experience with wonders of Europe in view. We got just what we wanted. We love the small ships of Viking compared to other companies. The meals on the Lofn and Vidar were most satisfactory. The staff at all points saw to our comfort. We knew we were in for the trip of our dreams when during the first lunch the hotel manager of the Lofn sought us out and told us the ship was upgrading us to the suite as a thank you for our loyalty to Viking. All we could say was WOW and DANKE, DANKE! The accommodations were wonderful and roomy with a wrap-around view. The land tours and guides were great. Sailed on the Viking Lofn out of Budapest on July 13, 2015. Wonderful new ship, friendly crew, knowledgeable tour guides and great techy earphones to hear guides. No need to miss anything if you aren't directly behind the guide. Viking personnel where waiting at the airport to pick us up and we went directly to the ship for a lovely bunch. We mostly ate in the dinning room and met new fellow travelers every day. Two concerns I have: this is not a cruise for newlyweds - and I felt bad for the couple on our ship - unless you like traveling with your parents/grandparent/great-grandparents. This is also not the cruise for folks needing walkers - yes, there were 3 or 4! They did their best to get in/out of some of the bus trips, but forget trying to push a walker on cobblestones! These dear people waited too long for this trip or choose the wrong venue. Loved the local entertainment on featured nights - glass blower, folk dancing/singing, classical music with comedy, a well as guest singing participation and dancing (are we really still doing YMCA?!). Had to disembark half way through do to low water and change to our sister ship the Vidar to complete the cruise to Amsterdam. No problem, didn't miss anything, handled well, 3 hour bus trip wasn't a burden. Great trip and we highly recommend it! Read Less

They even provided a jacket and umbrella on one of the cooler excursions. The accomodations were first class. Loved the heated bathroom floor. Crew was exceptional and we loved the food. You had a choice of eating in the dining room or on the deck. The message boxes enabled everyone to hear the tour guide without having to crowd around her. The tours were very educational and well done. You were divided into groups at your choosing for difficulty levels. You did not miss out on anything but walked at a leisurely pace. Onboard entertainment included glass blowing demonstration, strudel making and entertainment. Passengers were mostly older, but there were some youg ones traveling with their granparents. Diembarkation was smooth. The crew did everything in their power to make sure we had a great time. Would definitely sail with Viking again!! Read Less

The Lofn is new this year and had made only five short cruises before we were on its first Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest. We anticipated some glitches from a new vessel and crew, and we were very pleasantly surprised that there were none! Our transfer from the Amsterdam airport to the ship was well handled, our cabin was ready and our luggage came to us shortly after we arrived. Our veranda cabin was compact but comfortable, and we spent many pleasant hours on or balcony watching the river scene go by. The crew was well trained and friendly and helpful. Every evening we had a complete report on the next day's activities delivered to our cabin, and the times were respected with minimal waiting. The food was very good, if somewhat fussy. So we had an excellent vacation and cannot fault the Lofn and its crew in any respect. The weak spot in the Viking River Cruise operation is in the shore excursions and the guides used by all the Viking ships. There is minimal preparation for the passengers before arrival, so the guides head for the least common denominator in what they say. Some seemed to be more interested in listening to themselves talk and in perfecting their memorized patter than in being useful to us. Our first urban stop was in Cologne, and we were outraged that our guide never took us inside any building, that her discussion of Cologne Cathedral was worthless, that there was no mention of the nearby Romanesque churches for which Cologne is famous, and that we had lost precious hours to her we could have used much better on our own. Things did not get better as the voyage proceeded. Two suggestions to Viking: first, distribute materials on each excursion to the passengers in advance, so they will know what the guide will be discussing; second, encourage independent shore excursions by providing specific information on how to get around the city being visited.
