This was our second cruise which we picked in order to see the Rhine River for our 38th anniversary in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. The worry of the travel logistics, being on time, Looking for tours, planning meals are all taken away, and what is left is just your sheer enjoyment. Great tours to the best and feature spectacular sights which is the expectation and what is delivered. Tours provide insights into culture, history and present day life in the cities and countries you visit. To add to your understanding there are also cultural lectures and programs on board the ship. The program director informs you of what to expect the next day in a daily briefing. There are included tours in every port and you can select other tours that interest you. The cabins are very comfortable, the meals are gourmet cuisine and delicious, and the staff go above and beyond any expectations to make your trip the best experience possible. My wife and I enjoyed both trips and we will definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less

Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. River cruise was on our bucket list. This cruise hit all the ports we wanted plus the pre and post extensions (Lake Como And Amsterdam) added to our trip. Turned out to be so much more than we expected. The Viking reputation was upheld by the entire crew. From our captain to our Hotel Manager, to our breakfast server. Every person was amazing. They knew our names by day 2! The long ship was spotless. The food was outstanding. Even our nightly entertainment was great for the 30 of us who stayed up past 9:30 pm. We even made life long friends with some our shipmates. Seriously, it was so nice to be on a ship that concentrates on making relationships and truly providing service, rather than just purely entertaining you to make money. The crew of the Loft loves what they do. They have so much pride in taking care of their guests it shows every day. I am in the Hospitality Business, so trust me, I understand how hard it is and how special this group of people are. TAKE THIS CRUISE! That is my recommendation. Read Less

We had sailed with Viking on the Danube and were pleased with our experience so we picked them again for a Rhine River cruise and we're glad we did. Our balcony cabin was small, as are most river cruise cabins, but there was ample storage. The service was outstanding; we would like Marlon, our waiter, to come and live with us. He knew all of our drink preferences after the first day and, when one of our party became ill, he never failed to ask about his progress. We were very lucky: the water level and the weather were close to perfect. We spent most of the afternoon of the Middle Rhine sailing on the top deck and Viking showed great attention to details: we had maps that showed all of the 31 castles we sailed by, the program director did a commentary, we were given ice water, shade umbrellas, and ice cream (the sun was very strong that day - we all had red skin on areas where we failed to use sunblock). Most of the excursions were very good; the one exception being the Black Forest where it takes much too long on the bus to spend an hour at a very touristy visitors center (let's not talk about the rush hour traffic we hit on the way back). We would love to travel with Viking again. Read Less

We had never been on a cruise before and had heard great things about the Viking River Cruises in Europe, so we booked our Rhine River cruise to coincide with the Tulip Festival in Amsterdam and our 30 year wedding anniversary. Everything we had heard about and even more was true. The entire crew of the Viking Lofn gave each passenger first class treatment. We were so impressed with the quality of everything about this cruise. The guides on the excursions were so knowledgeable and informative, helping us to understand and appreciate every stop along the way! We celebrated our anniversary in Rudesheim, then came back to our cabin to find flowers and champagne and a lovely anniversary note from the staff. Because we could sit anywhere we wanted at meals, we were able to meet so many wonderful people with whom we still stay in contact. The final two days in the breathtakingly beautiful Lucerne, Switzerland were among our best memories. What a way to end the most glorious couple of weeks. To put it simply - we had the best time!!! We wanted to try a river cruise for our twentieth anniversary. It was true excellence all the way. The ports had lots to see. The staff was professional and very friendly. I loved the intimate feeling of a small boat versus an ocean liner. Most guests got to know each other really well. The ship was very clean and all activities were well organized. The food was delicious and planned to themes with the area the boat was visiting. The cruise director Gavin made our experience extra special. He was funny and personable. The alcohol was top shelf. The idea of an adults only cruise was very romantic and a great way to spend our anniversary. The tour guides were very knowledgeable about their ports. The one add- on excursion we took to the monastery with dinner was advertised as a working monastery and it wasn’t. That was our only disappointment of our trip. I have recomended Viking to all my friends and family. Read Less

Overwhelmed by the many choices of ships, destinations, just had to pick one. We were told a good place to start, having never been river cruising before was the Rhine or Danube. We decided on Rhine due to my love of castles, but can't wait to go back and do the Danube. I had such high expectations, I thought I would surely be let down, which couldn't have been further from the case. Staff was fantastic, service impeccable, everyone remembers your name after the first day which I thought was just remarkable. They even remember how you like your eggs or what kind of cocktail/wine you prefer. Food was delicious and loved the fact that we never felt stuffed or over served The Silver Spirits package was most definitely the way to go if you enjoy wine with your meals. The boat never appeared crowded. They choreographed getting on and off for excursions, going to dinner, etc. perfectly. We opted to pay extra for the add on excursions in several ports and were so glad we did, they were well worth the extra $$$. The pre-cruise Lucerne bonus was wonderfully done. The hotel was beautiful and day trips awesome. Cannot wait to go back again and would highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We started by doing a pre trip in Lucerne. This gave us time to adjust and get adjusted with the time. First day just wondered around Lucerne Very easy to do. 2nd day we did the pearls of switzerland. This is a 12 hour day trip taking you out on the lake to the top of Mt Rigi and to a Monastery then to a farm for cheese making followed by a dinner. This was a perfect way of seeing Switzerland. A wonderful trip in a mid size sedan to Basel. Each stop included a tour We did only 1 extra tour and I would say you do not need to do them. I found the walking tours were perfect then you have free time to do things yourself. The staff was wonderful. Each day you have a gathering were they discuss what the next day brings. Follow there recommendations on where to go in each city. They must have checked each place out carefully as we were never disappointed. Language was never a problem Somebody always spoke english. Did not see any of the port of calls. We left Lucerne and headed straight for the boat and docked in Amsterdam and headed to the airport. We plan on doing another Viking Tour next year. Read Less

This was our second Viking river cruise. And it was just as spectacular as our first river cruise. Everything is extremely well planned and executed from embarkation to your room to all activities on and off board ship. I have had questions in the past about the age of the people taking the Viking River Cruises. And I have found them to be very active and very middle-aged from 50 to 60 s. Ports and Shore excursions very well done and a huge plus to the cruise experience. I would go on a Viking river cruise again although next time we will probably do a viking Ocean Cruise. The staff on the Lofn was outstanding and service friendliness and assistance in meeting all of our needs. The dining experience was outstanding. We never had a meal that was anything but excellent. The lounge and and service by the cruise staff was also excellent. I would only suggest that there be a variety in the bar snacks that are provided. Read Less

Recommended by a friend, and we loved every moment of this adventure. This was our retirement gift to each other. Everything was more than we imagined. Outstanding service. Our luggage was lost by the airlines and the Viking Cruise representatives assured us they would locate and have it brought to the ship. And they did! Also our flight was delayed and we had to be rerouted, the Viking Cruise team assisted us and took care of everything. Amazing. Cabin had plenty of room, comfortable beds, hot and lots of pressure in the showers, great music or movies to view on the TV. The internet was sketchy, but they shared that it would be. We met some fascinating people and now have new friends coast to coast. The shore excursions were organized, educational, and we loved each and every one of them. Viewing castles while cruising down the Rhine and sipping wine....priceless! The dining and beverage experience was outstanding. Highly recommend paying the extra for the Silver Beverage Package, well worth every penny. We did the extra three nights in Como and explored Lake Como. Yes, do this! The ferry ride to Bellagio, Funicular ride to the top of the mountain, loved it all. And we too stayed three nights after the cruise ended and explored Amsterdam. Highly recommended. I'm still dreaming about this adventure and cannot wait to plan the next one! Thank you Viking Cruise team for the exceptional service. A+ Read Less

This was for my honeymoon, and was my first cruise, so I didn't know what to expect. Here's what I got: The ship was absolutely gorgeous! Well-appointed, always spotlessly clean, and nicer than a lot of land-based hotels I've stayed in. Our cabin was super-comfy and quiet for when we wanted time to ourselves. The food was surprisingly great, both in the restaurant and on the Aquavit Terrace, and the service in both was top-notch! Activities on board and shore excursions were super fun! I still remember the name of my trivia team from one of the activities. Daniela was a masterful Activities Director, always entertaining and personable, and ready to answer any questions that anybody had. The service was amazing. From the housekeeping staff to the bartenders and the waiters, it really felt like I'd known these people my whole life, and I wish I could have taken them home with me. If you ever get Dalibor as a bartender on your cruise, you won't be disappointed! We will definitely be going on another Viking cruise after we decide where to go! Read Less

This was our second Viking cruise, have enjoyed a marvelous week cruising the Garonne River near Bordeaux the previous year. We had high expectations based on the Bordeaux experience, and we were not disappointed. Accommodations and service were again outstanding, food was excellent. We had great weather, and the Rhine Gorge morning cruise was something we will always remember. The staff were wonderful and many were able to call us by name after the first couple of days. The only downside was the musical entertainment. We had been spoiled on the Bourdeaux cruise, and the person on this cruise was not up to the same quality at all. The other thing we missed were the large, fresh croissants each morning. Yeah, this is a small thing. We took several optional excursions, including the full day in the Alps with cog railway, and a winery visit in Mosel. These were quite nice. We are looking forward to our third Viking cruise next month in Portugal. Read Less

We wanted to do something special and neither my husband or I had ever been on a cruise. When this opportunity came up, we decided to jump on it! We are not getting any younger and it was time to be pampered! And pampered we were from the minute we boarded the Lofn. Our cabin was perfect and we really enjoyed the veranda. Meals were fabulous. We enjoyed meeting people from all over. We thorouly enjoyed the included excursions. It allowed us plenty of time to also explore on our own. Our activities director, Emily, was fantastic and made each day enjoyable. The staff on board was so attentive to our needs. The highlight of this cruise was the scenic trip down the middle Rhine where we could enjoy all the castles and vineyards from the top deck of our ship. We would encourage anyone who is thinking about a Viking cruise to just do it. You will not regret your decision! Read Less

We had previously cruised the Danube with Viking and wanted to have another river cruise vacation. We were not disappointed! We booked a two day extension in Lucerne, Switzerland and set sail later in the week from Basel. Lucerne was beautiful and our Viking host was welcoming and gave us a great walking tour of Old Town. We met happy, friendly fellow travelers on the ship and enjoyed the attentive service of the ship's staff. The cabin was comfortable and the food was excellent with more than one dining option for breakfast and lunch. Even though this was a "small" ship, there were many places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, the view, a conversation, or a book. The excursions in each port were well-planned and guided by knowledgeable local citizens. It was definitely a memorable experience! We've already booked a Viking Ocean Cruise to see the Panama Canal and expect that the Viking ocean cruise will be just as wonderful as the Viking river cruise. Read Less

We were able to sit down with the owners in their own dining room and taste three different cheeses they had made over the past year! The included excursions were all excellent - the castles were all breathtaking! We tipped each of the excursion guides - they were excellent, informative, professional, and one was extra fun! The Viking Lofn staff and crew were simply amazing, very friendly and outgoing. They made sure that this vacation was incredible. The only hitch in the vacation came directly from Viking, and that was the flight arrangements. Flying from Los Angeles into Paris, and only having a 1-1/2 hour layover does not give enough time for any mishaps in the schedule. We missed our connecting flight to Amsterdam by 10 minutes, since we had left Los Angeles 45 minutes late. We eventually made it to Amsterdam and stayed at the Movenpick Hotel right at the port. I had ordered the IAmsterdam cards for everyone in our party, which allows bus/trains etc. Well worth the price since we arrived 3 days before the cruise. We fell in love with Amsterdam. Would definitely go back there. When we boarded the Lofn we had a Veranda B cabin. The cabin is beautifully laid out, plenty of storage. We enjoyed the balcony, sitting out and watching the swans, and scenery. Some of the locks we went thru we saw from our balcony, quite an experience. Our room steward learned out habits quickly and made sure that we always had fresh water and an ice bucket filled with ice. Cabin was spotless! The shore excursions were fun and informative. We did do a lot of walking, though there was a leisure group, for those who had trouble with stairs, and hills. Most of what they saw were the same things but just easier access. The personal communication systems work great. Was able to hear the tour guides clearly, could even wander a little and be able to still hear them. Food was wonderful, if we wanted only appetizers they brought them, can't decide between two things, no problem. Wine and beer were good. We didn't get the silver package, if you like mixed drinks it might be worth the price. Most everyone on board was over 55. The ship is really not set up for children. Read Less

We enjoyed the Food & Wine excursion. It was excellent. We progressed through the town, eating and learning about the cookies, cheeses and wine. Plus, we had a private tour of the cathedral and the fabulous astronomical clock. All this was included. The fabulous dinners were prepared by a top notch chefs and delivered by top notch waiters. This was our first trip to Europe. We let Viking handle everything. Left Dulles on 4/13, landed in Amsterdam, were met by Viking guide, right to clean, modern van to our hotel, the Radissan Blue for 2 nights to recover from our jet lag which was a good idea! We explored the town ad relaxed. On embarkation day, we were met by Viking vans, had our luggage loaded and whisked to our ship, the Viking Loft, luggage taken to our cabin and we were set. Hot moist towels and snacks to take the edge off. First class all the way! First day we toured Amsterdam with a canal cruise. This was a Tulips and Windmills cruise and the flowers and weather did not disappoint us. Had some rain but mostly at night and no tours were a washout. The ship was spotless and gleaming. I am a Coast Guard vet and I look at the details, safety, crew, ship condition, etc. This Viking ship is a class act! Dining was exceptional, nothing left to chance. Occasionally, the service was a little slow, but the wine and beer was included, so no problem there. Let me say this: ALL CREW MEMBERS were supportive and cheerful. EVERYONE! One lady had a little too much to drink and they helped her to her cabin without any problem. One thing- This is not a "Mega Ship" with all the bars, casino, etc. There is a lounge with a piano bar and you can dance or just relax. Shore excursions were included and there were some optional ones at a modest price. Slow walkers were taken care of. Ports were varied and interesting. DO NOT MISS KULKENHOFF GARDENS! This was our first cruise of any kind and, overall, we were very happy. Because of low water conditions we were forced on two occasions to transit by bus, once to change vessels from Lofn to Vidar and once to hotel accomodation in Budapest. We found the guides on all shore excursions to be very knowledgable and quite entertaining. The crew of the Lofn was outstanding - service was excellent and very prompt, attentive and considerate. While the crew of the Vidar was good, there was a noticable drop off in service quality. The same can be said of the quality of the food - outstanding on the Lofn; materially less good on Vidar. All things considered, the arrangements for the transfer from Lofn to Vidar were handled very well. However, we were not happy with the hotel arrangements in Budapest. The hotel was located away from, and with no convenient access to, the city centre. Our luggage was misplaced. While a meal credit was provided for dinner in the hotel restaurant, the service was extraordinarily bad and we, along with several other guests from the cruise, eventually gave up and walked out. Other than the hotel bar, there were no other' dining' options. With luggage having to be made available in the hallway at 2 am and a 4 am departure for the airport, our stay in Budapest left us bored, hungry and exhausted. As a result of the foregoing, our ratings for the have been reduced from what would otherwise have been 'excellent' to 'average' to 'very good' in a number of categories. Read Less

We spent several days in beautiful Prague, Czech Republic, prior to boarding our river cruise in Budapest, Hungary and then spent the next 15 days with the Viking Lofn crew and guests. What a spectacular time we had. The boat was new, comfortable, easy to navigate and a great home away from home. We've visited southern Europe several times in the past, and this cruise introduced us to The Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. We will definitely return and feel very grounded now with the geography. We were so impressed with how many people spoke fluent English and were self conscious about our lack of foreign language skill. The river cities we visited were all wonderful, the shore guides were all excellent and our crew was spectacular. This is our second Viking cruise (the first was in China) and we are already booked for our next cruise in 2017. Can't wait to go. We booked our Viking River Cruise well over a year before we left on this cruise. We were very much looking forward to this adventure and to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. This cruise did not disappoint. I must admit it was a little rocky start when we arrived into Amsterdam and there were some mishaps beginning with the ship which was actually in Rotterdam and we were bused there, because of the inability for this "longship" to dock in Amsterdam due to a boating regatta in Amsterdam. A couple other issues while waiting at the hotel made us wonder. HOWEVER, once we arrived on our ship The Lofn, settled into our beautiful cabin, after having the entire crew welcome us on board, it all became very wonderful. The crew, the guides at each port, the views out the large ship windows, the service, our Program Director, our cabin person, wait staff, desk staff were all more than helpful throughout our journey on both the Lofn and the Vidar which was a ship change due to low water levels on the Danube. The crew made that pretty seamless too, as no one was looking forward to packing up and moving. But, the crew made it so easy and even all the new crew on the Vidar were doing all they could to make us comfortable. The sights, the countries, the guides who were so knowledgeable made our adventure just fabulous. Thank you Viking for a 50th Wedding Anniversary that will always be remembered. Read Less

We have had spectacular Viking cruises. Five of them. The first on the Volga, Moscow to St. Petersburg, was, we thought, the trip of a lifetime. I'd like to go again. The China trip, Shanghai to Beijing, was a long way to go to see a new world but so worth it. And Vietnam and Cambodia, ditto, sights and sites of a lifetime. We chose the Grand European for our 30th anniversary and wanted a more leisurely experience with wonders of Europe in view. We got just what we wanted. We love the small ships of Viking compared to other companies. The meals on the Lofn and Vidar were most satisfactory. The staff at all points saw to our comfort. We knew we were in for the trip of our dreams when during the first lunch the hotel manager of the Lofn sought us out and told us the ship was upgrading us to the suite as a thank you for our loyalty to Viking. All we could say was WOW and DANKE, DANKE! The accommodations were wonderful and roomy with a wrap-around view. The land tours and guides were great. It was the right combination of special sights and free time. The organization for switching ships because of the water level and the final leaving were as good as they could be. Sailed on the Viking Lofn out of Budapest on July 13, 2015. Wonderful new ship, friendly crew, knowledgeable tour guides and great techy earphones to hear guides. No need to miss anything if you aren't directly behind the guide. Viking personnel where waiting at the airport to pick us up and we went directly to the ship for a lovely bunch. We mostly ate in the dinning room and met new fellow travelers every day. Two concerns I have: this is not a cruise for newlyweds - and I felt bad for the couple on our ship - unless you like traveling with your parents/grandparent/great-grandparents. This is also not the cruise for folks needing walkers - yes, there were 3 or 4! They did their best to get in/out of some of the bus trips, but forget trying to push a walker on cobblestones! These dear people waited too long for this trip or choose the wrong venue. Loved the local entertainment on featured nights - glass blower, folk dancing/singing, classical music with comedy, a well as guest singing participation and dancing (are we really still doing YMCA?!). Had to disembark half way through do to low water and change to our sister ship the Vidar to complete the cruise to Amsterdam. No problem, didn't miss anything, handled well, 3 hour bus trip wasn't a burden. Great trip and we highly recommend it! Read Less

This trip was a celebration of our 20th Anniversay - a gift to ourselves. From the moment we stepped on board the Lofn we were impressed with the ship and the service. The staff provided impeccable attention to detail and made it a priority to get to know the passengers. The food surpassed our expectations and we are foodies! We participated in all but one of the included excursions and found each to be entertaining and rewarding as we learned the history of the sights through the eyes of informed guides. Even though we planned to skip one of the excursions in order to spend the day with our French family, the staff checked with us again to make sure our plans hadn't changed at the last minute. Our cabin was perfect and the shower was oversized and quite enjoyable. A clothes drying line in the shower allowed us to rinse things and hang to dry overnight. We also used the cleaning service on board and had our items back in 2 hours. When we mentioned to the room steward that our pillows were too flat, they addressed it immediately and adjusted them. Overall, we couldn't have asked for more and we are already making plans for our next trip in 2017 on the Danube. Look out Budapest, we will be headed your way! Read Less

After enduring an overnight "cruise" from Portland to Nova Scotia some 20 years ago, I have never had the desire to take a cruise. Being stuck at sea with 5,000 strangers does not sound like much fun to me. Enter the Viking River Cruise: a perfect way to see so much and not have the hassle of checking in and out of hotels. The ship was fantastic and only making its second voyage when we checked in. The engineers did a fantastic job thinking of virtually everything in terms of getting as much out of contrained space as possible. The bed and linens were top shelf, storage ample, bathroom and water pressure was perfect. The only negative worth mentioning is wifi acess and the TV. I think the internet access is a long term problem that goes beyond Viking, while I chalk up the spotty TV service to being a new ship with glitches to work out. The dining room, food, and service was impeccable. Menu selections were varied and I actually appreciated the smaller portions, as one could always get seconds or even sample another entree at any meal. We really enjoyed the passengers and crew we met on this trip. It is the kind of trip that could be fun to enjoy with another couple, but I think if you were to go with a larger group, you may tend to flock together and really miss out on meeting some interesting people. Forget bringing the kids on the trip (there were none and they would go out of their minds of boredom if there had been any); youngest person we met was 31, and at 51, we were certainly in the "youngest quintile" of folks. None of that is a negative, but I think we were told the avg. age was 50 and I'd say that was a bit low. We really enjoyed the excursions and the history lessons we felt we learned throughout the trip. They are very well organized, but there is some variety in the quality of the local tour guides (ranged from excellent to "mehh")- luck of the draw. The other lesson we learned is that when they say they sail from Basel to Amsterdam, don't assume that builds in any time to actually tour either city. We did Lucerne extension (which was excellant), but by the time we were delivered to the ship, it was set to sail in less than 2 hours. With Amsterdam, arrived at 2 am but nowhere near center city...we got up early and took a cab to the city to see as much as we could before returning to the ship for our tranfer for a 1pm flight home. We will definitely be taking another Viking River Cruise. Destination TBD. Read Less
