See Don465's review...my sentiments exactly! When making plans to go on a cruise, my only goal was that it be a river cruise. Not being on the ocean with thousands of other people was what initially drew me to a river cruise. What an excellent decision that turned out to be! Everything from start to finish was wonderful! I can't say enough about the staff! If there is a school on how to make passengers feel comfortable, and well taken care of, the Lofn staff were all star students! Matter of fact, every Viking employee, no matter what their job was, was superb...from the staff that met us at the airport, to the employees who took care of our cabin, to the chef and his staff, to the tour guides on the excursions, to the Viking woman that helped us during our stay in Basel, to every person with a Viking name tag! Our trip was truly one I will never forget! Read Less

I chose this cruise so my wife and I could spend some time with our daughter and her family after the cruise in Basel. All-in-all we were very happy with this cruise and how Viking took care of us. We spent a day in Amsterdam prior to departure to get over the jet lag flying overnight from Chicago. The ship and facilities were in very good condition. We are mostly experienced in ocean cruising with about a dozen overall cruises, but this was only our second river cruise, both with Viking. Viking did an excellent job navigating the Rhine as it was at a historically low water level, given the drought in Europe last summer. At one point, Viking thought we were going to have to be off-boarded and transported to another ship to get past the most critically low-level areas. However, they got through with apparently only a few inches of clearance and it was really cause for celebration to avoid that possible obstacle and delay! The stops and excursions were all excellent. Typically, we are willing on cruises to pay extra for excursions, but on this trip, what was included in the base price were excellent, and we didn't upgrade a single excursion! Very unusual for us, yet we felt we saw everything we wanted to. The areas for improvement for us are in evening entertainment and the ability to have room service for your meals. The previous river cruise with Viking had significant evening entertainment which we didn't feel this cruise offered. Also, the balconies are very nice on the ship and we love to have our meals brought in to be consumed while we sail and we often do on our ocean cruises...unfortunately, Viking doesn't offer that on their river cruises, that I am aware of. A third complaint is that this river ship did not offer a small gym or workout room. Other than those complaints, we were very happy with the ship, the staff, the service, and the entire experience with Viking. Read Less

The crew was awesome and provided exceptional professional service. The tour director scheduled and supervised exceptional day trips that provided an introductory experience to Germany, France, Norway, and Switzerland on a very abbreviated schedule (10-days). The cruising experience afforded us the opportunity experience a comprehensive cultural sampling of all the visited countries and helped us to understand and appreciate what areas we would like to return to on a future date to experience the culture in more detail. The cruising experience was very "family like" allowing us to make many new friends from all areas of the United States. Destination focused cuisine was expertly prepare and provided a sampling of the area we were currently visiting. American classics were also available if we were "homesick" for a more customary fare. Evening entertainment was exceptional, by cruise completion we were in need of a follow-on vacation to relax. For us this cruise was not relaxing as we wanted to experience everything the cruise had to offer. That said many of the more senior passengers opted for a more leisurely schedule which was perfectly coordinated and executed by the Viking staff. Extensions and flexibility in scheduling to both the "front-end" and "back-end" of the cruise offered "cruisers" to experience either Amsterdam or Basel (we went to Lake Lucerne for 10-days at the onset) in more detail. This was our first cruise and we could not have been more impressed. Everything Viking did was 1st Class. We loved the crew, food and excursions. The 3 wonderful meals a day were plenty but if you needed a snack, there was always cookies or muffins along with coffee, tea or hot chocolate. After dinner, there was some type entertainment every night. We were impressed with how the staff was able to remember our names and room number. The cruise director did a remarkable job coordinating the daily tours and the entertainment every night. The captain was always available to answer any questions and help you if needed. All of the tour guides they gave us were nice, funny and informative. When needed, Viking had some nice modern busses to take us on our excursions. We purchased discount vouchers to use on our next Viking cruise. We can't wait to go back again. Read Less

Our accommodations were incredibly comfortable and the ship, along with its crew, made the whole experience a week-long welcome. Each meal was a new experience and the service was both gracious and friendly. Our travels in Europe had never taken us to the ports that we visited, so every shore excursion was a first. We have taken cruises before, but always on large, ocean going ships with hundreds to thousands of passengers. This was our first river cruise and we were pleasantly surprised to find fewer than 200 passengers. Viking's smaller capacity makes the entire experience a lot more personal and individual. Every port embarkation and disembarkation went off exactly as scheduled, with plenty of time ashore to visit the high points of the larger cities or take a long wander through the smaller towns and villages. The big decision now is whether we take another Viking river cruise or try one of the Viking ocean cruises. Either way, we will definitely be back. Read Less

My last real chance to do this due to age and health - and I picked a winner! The crew on this trip was outstanding. They all memorized my name within the first day. Made me feel welcome at every turn. The excursions were outstanding. One of the reasons was that each of us was provided a personal receiver so we could hear the tour guide withount crowding up to the front. Didn't feel hurried or stressed to hear his her descriptions. All of the guides lived in the areas visited on each stop, including the bus drivers (where required). They were all very knowledgeable and courteous. I liked the ability to go to top deck to get unobstructed 360 views of the shorelines. Marvelkous food and plenty of it!! I would have very much appreciated a price break for me because I had to travel alone (wife totally incapable of traveling). This meant I had to pay for two persons (for the stateroom). Read Less

We spent two extra days in Amsterdam prior to the cruise. We arranged these on our own, saving a little money. We then did the eight day cruise up the Rhine to Basel, Switzerland. The whole family enjoyed this trip. Great accommodations, good food, fantastic service. Logistics were excellent. My only complaint was the short time available on some of the excursions. We could have easily spent more time in Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and the Black Forest. (Speaking of the Black Forest, show us a little more than a quick stop at a tourist trip to buy souvenirs. We know there are plenty of quaint villages in those hills.) Finally, we did the two-day extension in Lucerne, Switzerland. Initially, it appeared a bit expensive, but the accommodations were grand and the location outstanding. Overall, an excellent value for the price paid. We already have another Viking cruise booked for next summer. Read Less

We went on this cruise because it was a good way to see Europe without having to plan out the whole trip. The ship was great! All of the crew was AMAZING. The food was really good too! Our family ate on the boat for almost every meal. There were always so many options to pick from and the waiters really took the time to get to know you. We also met most of our friends during meal times. EVERYONE that we talked to on the boat was so nice. We made so many new friends who we are planning on visiting in the future. The excursions were fantastic. It was helpful that we had a guided tour at each location because it helped us know where we were and where we needed to meet to get back on the boat. I would recommend Viking to anyone because it was effortless to plan. The whole trip was planned out for you and all you had to do was show up. It was perfect for a family or couple or individual who has never been to Europe before. I think our whole family would go on another Viking Cruise. Read Less

So I had actually never been on a cruise prior to this cruise on the Viking Lofn. In fact, I was a little wary about cruises as I've heard stories about the big cruises down in the Caribbean...and the stories weren't good. But I went in with an open mind, and I can absolutely say that I was blown away! From the bartender's remembering our drink preferences to the maitre d' remembering our room number to the waitstaff at meals remembering our dining preferences...I couldn't believe it! The rooms are small, but they were actually larger than I expected based on what I've heard about cruises. Plus, the videos on the Viking website showing the rooms and the ship are excellent. I feel like I already knew the layout of the ship before we ever arrived! The food. I can't even begin to describe how amazing the food was on board! I work in the food industry, and I understand the difficulty of producing amazing food. But Chef Oliver consistently impressed us! We would absolutely go back on another cruise on the Viking Lofn...in fact, I would pack up and leave this very minute if I could! Read Less

We chose this cruise because my sister and son had not been in Germany or The Netherlands before and my Mom and I wanted to go back. We needed an option that did not involve alot of traveling and getting in and out of a bus (up and down motion). My mom has a walker. We also did not want the typical cruise where you are at sea several days and do not see significant land. We wanted to visit cities, etc. We picked a river cruise, and Viking is the 1# river cruiser! We really like the smaller size. We did not want a casino, a lot of dance contests, etc. We had been on 3 Holland America, and really loved them, but we were tired of that. We wanted a small ship. We also did not want too strenuous (we did an expedition ship from Iceland to Greenland, it was great, but my mom could not always land in Greenland. This cruise forfilled our expectations, so now we are going to Russia on Viking! Read Less

My husband and I sailed with 4 other family members. We explored various options for several months before selecting Viking - which ultimately became a unanimous decision. Throughout the planning process, our questions were always addressed and answered professionally and with much enthusiasm. Once our trip began, we immediately knew that the welcoming and caring staff on the Lofn was committed to anticipating our every need, and they did so with genuine warmth and infectious smiles. Our rooms were beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. The entertainment in the lounge was most enjoyable, and the Cruise Director's daily messages about upcoming events, activities, and destinations were always informative and helpful. The meals were outstanding- with every attention to detail, quality, appearance, options, and amazing taste! The tours offered and available at each destination were well-planned and beautifully executed. In summary, from beginning to conclusion, our Viking experience was absolutely first-class, and we would encourage anyone considering a river cruise to go Viking! Read Less

This was my second river cruise on Viking. In 2015 I did the Paris to Normandy trip on the Rinda. The Lofn was equally well appointed and the and the staff as wonderfully attentive. The itinerary of Basel to the North Sea provided many interesting stops and local guides both well informed and personable. The onboard lectures were very well done by local talent. The food was excellent with a good variety of choices. The staff met with one member of our party with gluten and lactose issues and prepared personal meals to accommodate her needs. The one area I think needs improving is the system of rafting with other river boats at docking. The boats are mere inches apart and if you have a veranda it is unusable. This happened to us for the better part of two days. Everyone in our party of seven thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. We will be planning another for next summer. Read Less

The Lofn was my first experience on a Longship and quite different from cruising on big ocean liners, but very nice. The ports were wonderful. Our guides were fantastic. Everything was very well planned. I would have enjoyed more evening entertainment. A dress code for dinner would have been appreciated-jeans are fine during the day, but no jeans and t shirts for dinner. Including a tour of Ann Frank's house would have been appreciated. My friend waited 2 1/2 hours in line. Visiting the many cathedrals was a highlight of my trip. The tulips were gorgeous the third week in April. The dining hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner accommodated our tour times. Rene was a great entertainment director. The waitstaff went above and beyond to make sure everyone was pleased with service, food and special diets. Being able to tour the galley was an unexpected treat. Read Less

We had greatly enjoyed two previous trips with Viking leaving from Moscow and Budapest and chose a route that was new to us and included going through an area that some ancestors came from and ended in Switzerland where we had family ties. The ship was first class with very comfortable dining and meeting areas and always in perfect order. We always looked forward to meal time and the many selections to choose from, and appreciated the opportunity to occasionally order off menu. All the staff, with their varied responsibilities, were professional, knowledgeable and personable. There was no doubt that the crew was there to support and have "happy" customers. The officers were readily available, and were quite visible throughout the trip including the evening events. It seemed like some of them had second jobs as entertainers. Our cabin was very comfortable and excellently maintained. I don't believe we missed any of the organized events. The one thing I think that could be improved on this trip is the shore excursions. They seemed to be totally time driven. If you stopped to look at something of interest you risked getting left behind. We certainly have hopes for a fourth Viking trip. Read Less

My mother in law chose this cruise, to take the whole family. We were concerned at first because of her age (mid 80s), but the crew took excellent care of us and especially of her. There were many ways the crew assisted her or made accommodation so that she could participate in outings. I personally enjoyed the many choices available at each stop, and also the choice to simply sit on deck and enjoy scenery. The crew were exemplary. I have done nothing but sing your praises since arriving home, and I hope to do it again very soon. The trick is to pace yourself at the same time that you push yourself: choose what interests you! On the same day, I had a "Mozart" experience in Vienna that was a peak life experience and my brother-in-law had a peak life experience watching the Lipizzaner stallions. Our family was amused that we were both excited and thrilled with our "bucket list" days which were so completely different from each other. In another town, our peak of the day was to have a coffee and pastry at a sidewalk cafe and simply people watch. Each day brings different possibilities, so pay attention and follow your feeling of the moment. Bring a couple of pairs of good walking shoes, and enjoy the many different ports of call, each with some treasure waiting for you to partake. Read Less

Staff was beyond wonderful. They were always upbeat and helpful. One night my husband forgot to check in that he was on board. I was in the cabin asleep and one of the staff called to see if he was in the room. I freaked out because I knew we were sailing at that point. My husband however is always very punctual and I was worried something had happened to him. The staff person called me back to let me know he was with the guys on the top deck. I was so impressed and of course very relieved. Food was fantastic. I did gain the 10 pounds they promised. My big disappointment though was that we did not dock close to towns. We did in Passau and a couple of others only. It was over 100 degrees quite a few days and I would have liked rather than going on tours to be able to walk into town and come back when I wanted. Other Viking ships docked closer to towns. If there was a reason for this I would have appreciated knowing. Friends of ours who were on the Grand European from Budapest to Amsterdam at the same time we were stopped at docks in the towns. The tours we took were wonderful. The Kinderdik windmill stop was much better than the last time we stopped on a different brand of cruise ship. We got to go inside one and have demonstrations by the windmill keeper who even wore wooden shoes. To sum up I love Viking but since being able to get off the ship and walk around is important to me, I am not sure what I will do the next time we take a river cruise. I don't know if I can find out where the boat will dock- next to towns or not. Read Less

I was a little concerned with this being the maiden voyage and with the exception of AC problems in my cabin the experience was fabulous. The staff was superb especially paying special attention to my 83 year old mother who became exteremly ill (sever cold) and spent 4 days in her room. This was done for both her comfort and shielding the rest of the ship. The staff delivered food to her room 3x daily and went the extra step of preparing her special light requests that were not on the menu. I can't say enough about how caring they were to my mother's needs. Food, staff, entertainment were excellent. Could not have asked for more. Will definately plan another cruise with Viking.
