I always swore to never take a cruise, however several friends persuaded me otherwise. My biggest challenge when I returned was to find a "favorite" part of the trip. Every part of the vacation was magnificent. The accommodations were superb, starting with the the people that ran the operation. Customer service for Viking obviously was the main priority. The food prep, from presentation to taste, I am still talking about. All of the meals had relevance to the country and city we were visiting, which I found amazing. Cabin's were very clean, information prior to tours extremely informative and the tour guides were so knowledgeable. I appreciated the size of the tours were broken down into easy group sizes. Entertainment was great in the evening. The expectation for the trip prior to leaving was "high", but Viking Legend even surpassed all my expectations. I was concerned about safety prior to leaving, but really had no issues during the entire cruise. I will definitely take another, but not certain where I will be going. Read Less

This was our first cruise, if I have to dress for dinner, I won't go. We went 3 days early to spend some time in Munich (was stationed in the area while in the army). Munich should be a pre-cruise choice. Took the train to Passau and had no trouble finding the ship. During the cruise all of the excursions were great. Especially the "Back-stage tour of the Vienna Boys Choir" where we got to hear a 45-minute concert by one of the choirs and meet them afterwards. The castle in Bratislava is really impressive at night. The Hungarian horsemen tour was surprising, I didn't know what to expect, but it was fantastic. David, the Program Director was exceptionally good. The cabin was plenty big enough for us. Always clean and neat. The food service was special. I had a diet-coke (my preferred caffeine) at the table for breakfast almost before I sat down. The food was excellent. I enjoyed the Chef coming around to talk to everyone. The only downside was something that can't be foreseen, low water in Budapest. We didn't miss anything, just had longer bus rides to places and back to the ship. All in all it was well worth doing. We have been telling our friends that they should go. Read Less

Although we have traveled to Europe several times, the Danube Waltz cruise on the Viking Legend was the most fun and relaxing trip we have taken recently. Our favorite stop was Salzburg, where coffee and a pastry at Furst's was simply wonderful. The tour offered excellent photo opportunities, but the time in Salzburg seemed so short. The Melk Abbey tour was awe inspiring ... it was amazing to see the work of Immanuel Kant. The beautiful frescoes were breathtaking. The Vienna tour seemed rather hectic, but we did have an opportunity for a brief visit to the Art Nouveau Museum to see the Gustave Klimt exhibit. We had the pleasure of attending the Mozart Strauss concert in Vienna. The acoustics were amazing and the performance was wonderful. The Viking staff moved patrons to and from the venue in a quick and orderly manner. There were no long lines or waiting for transportation. It was as we were heading to Bratislava that we learned we would be unable to cruise all the way to Budapest due to low water levels on the Danube. An adjustment was made to spend more time in Bratislava. Although we were disappointed initially, we loved spending time in Bratislava, enjoying the shops and outdoor markets. Viking tried to make the best of the situation by providing excellent coach service to Budapest. The travel time reduced the amount of time to visit Budapest, and we were unable to visit shops we had patronized before. There was, however, a lovely lunch at The Spoon on the Danube. We sadly left the Viking Legend, but the disembarkation was extremely well organized ... luggage was removed like magic. The food and service aboard the Viking Legend was excellent. There were many choices for even the most particular diner, and the staff made every effort to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Chef Michael was present during most meals. We wish there had been more time to explore these exceptional stops on the cruise, more time to sit and breathe in the atmosphere with a glass of wine, listening to music ... or quietly reading. We will cherish these memories forever ... this is a very special way to travel, to relax, to meet new friends, to laugh and to make memories that will last a lifetime. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we were very pleased. The staff could not have been more pleasant and responsive..everyone was very friendly and helpful. The Cruise Director David Morgan, was very charming as well as conscientious. The food was outstanding...portions were not gigantic, which was good! The buffets were excellent for breakfast and lunch. The tours were interesting and well organized..and the ear pieces made sure you could hear the guides. The cabin, though small, was very well appointed with many places for storage, comfortable bedding, thick towels and upscale amenities. The entertainment at night was not the caliber of the big ships, but much more appropriate for this kind of cruise. And there were lectures about the ports visited, the locks, the boat itself, the Danube etc. We met many very nice people. All in all, a very positive experience! Read Less

We cruised at night which meant early morning docking allowing us to begin our day sightseeing. Many land trips are included in the price..a real plus. Communication re: side trips were announced the first evening and one could sign up for trips for the whole week...another plus. Evening entertainment was fun and a wonderful pianist played during cocktail hour. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We started with a pre-cruise stay in Prague at the Hilton-Prague (beautiful hotel). Pre-booked two city tours (a walking/boat/dinner tour and a food tour the next day). Both took us to different areas of this fascinating city. Then it was off to Passau, Germany and the Legend on the Danube River. Wonderful trip visiting fascinating cities, beautiful churches, countryside and historic sites. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and clued us in to the real Von Trapp family history in Salzburg. Wish we had more time to spend in many of the places. Thank goodness for a/c in the hotel and on the Legend, as Europe was experiencing a drought and heat wave. Delicious food, wonderful service, friendly staff and--best of all--we didn't have to pack and unpack for one whole week! How good is that! Read Less

We sailed on the Legend from Passau in July and found every aspect of our holiday excellent. The ship was one of the older ones in the fleet, but we found it well presented and it had all the facilities we wanted. We had not sought a balcony, and would not do so, since there was plenty of room on the full-length sun deck. The itinerary was excellent - sailings being timed to optimise the time at the stop-overs. Going down stream, the night cruising was at low throttle and quiet. Obviously, Viking had managed to obtain the best of the city-centre mooring locations. Throughout our holiday, the crew were excellent- efficient and professional, yet always having time for a little chat or banter. Their great personal qualities were the stand-out memory of our holiday. On shore excursions were all good to excellent, though I think those who went to the optional (expensive) Mozart recital had poor value. So good that we have already booked for next year. HINT - location of stateroom on boat is more important than facilities such as balcony etc Backroom staff deserve praise, since everything worked well, but we largely saw just the dining room staff. A musician played in the lounge each night, and two nights when local entertainers performed were enjoyable. Nothing much to find fault with, at all. Read Less

This was our first experience of river cruising but wish we had done it earlier. The crew were wonderful and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a wonderful time. The ship was the perfect size not too many people on board. We weren't looking forward to having to share a table for meals but the atmosphere was such that it did enhance the experience meeting different people ever day it was abonus that everyone on the ship with the exception of the captain spoke English. The room we had was comfortable not huge but we didn't go on a cruise to spend all day in our cabin, having a french balcony was good being able to see the world go by.there were occasions when other boats were moored alongside us but that did not occur too often and we had been warned about that in the brochures and did't spoil our enjoyment. There were excursions every day which were well organised and interesting with usually some free time to do some exploring on your own, the guides were informative and friendly, and the transportation was comfortable and bottled water was supplied. The food was well prepared with sufficient options available, plus the staff were always willing to come up with options if you had a problem with anything. Drinks were supplied with the meals which was sufficient for us, there was a drinks station with tea and coffee. The whole experience was wonderful and we would love to take another one. The only slight problem was the journey home the bus taking us back to the airport didn't appear to know where we were going and we were also disapointed to find that we weren't seated together bon our flight. This was my first river cruise, based on my wife's recommendation, she did the Moscow to St. Petersburg cruise last year with a friend. From the moment we boarded on the first day to reluctantly leaving on the last day we received 5 star treatment, nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, the food was tasty and well presented (I'm a fussy eater) and gave you a flavour, pun intended, of the area being visited. The evening entertainment was excellent. Apart from the overall package, a couple of things struck me as being a nice touch, every time you left the ship you were given a bottle of cold water also, as one who uses a walking stick, I appreciated the fact that each walking tour had an "easy walking" group that went at a more leisurely pace and avoided the steeper routes. The ship was not one of the new longships but it did not detract from the overall feeling of being on an elegant cruise. I would thoroughly recommend a Viking river cruise for a relaxing holiday. Good and bad, mostly good. Good = a clean, quiet ship; every meal began on time; meal servers efficient, attentive -- ready with coffee refresher, ready with a second glass of wine or beer; meal portions sensible; food tasty, nicely presented; breakfast buffet variety of items (cereals, eggs, omelets, sausage, fruit, croissants, jams/jellies, OJ, grapefruit juice, coffee, tea, butter, honey, etc.); 24/7 quality coffee from a dispenser near the lounge; treats (cookies, pastry) always available by the dispenser; sanitary standards obviously a priority, from your room to the hallway to the lounge to the restaurant Bad = tours to Salzburg and Durnstein too much emphasis on shopping -- not worth the 2-hour trip to Salzburg, although scenery was beautiful; Salzburg bus dropped you off just outside the main shopping district (don't believe the Web and brochure of the Salzburg gardens because it is only about two blocks long and a block wide) and although some free time was available to get to the hilltop castle there was not enough time to actually stroll into the city proper to see neighborhoods and other city life; Durnstein was one long, narrow street packed with touristy shops, with the ancient castle perched above, reachable by a hike on a steep trail, which actually was good exercise; my advice is to skip Salzburg and stay in Linz to see the city there and you'll have all day to do it; conversely, not nearly enough time in Vienna, only a morning tour with afternoon free time -- it's a city worth part of another day, which could be accomplished by leaving Durnstein off the itinerary and just docking in Melk, with its beautiful abbey. Good = some of the local tour guides who actually were informative because they mentioned modern life in whatever community we were in (Bratislava, Budapest, Passau) with details about the economy, housing prices, political conditions -- in addition to the usual history info. Bad = some of the local tour guides who stuck to a script and did not deviate, had almost no sense of humor or otherwise put no personality into their talk (Salzburg, Vienna). Good = free time in Passau and Budapest to explore the cities on your own, get away from the tourist areas. Bad = not enough independence allowed you, because we would rather have gone off on our own with a good local sightseeing book rather than being stuck in a slow-moving group. Good = attitudes of ship's crew, servers, program director and assistants, concierge; all to be expected, of course, because their livelihood depends on it, but still pleasant to encounter. Bad = attitudes of too many fellow passengers who never tipped the local tour guides or bus drivers; this is inexcusable because that's how these people earn extra income and saving a few euros a day by not tipping just so you can pay for the extra booze you want is awful. Good = We did our airline travel, and we would recommend it because you can rest a day before your cruise and you can continue to where you want to go when you want to go. However, even though we booked our own flights Viking made sure we had transportation (we paid for transfer from Budapest hotel) and a Viking representative met us at the airport as the sun rose in the sky to make sure we got through the baggage process. Viking doesn't forget you when you leave the ship. Would we go again? A couple years from now. Meanwhile, what we learned was how to plan our own trip at less expense. We took trains before and after our cruise (this was a dream vacation that stretched to 22 days) and now we feel comfortable navigating Europe (English, French, German trains).   Read Less

My wife and I were first time river cruisers on the Viking Legend. As luck would have it, our cruise started the day before historic flooding that made the last floods of 2002 look tame. In fact, the floods in Passau were almost 2' higher than the record flooding of 1501, the previous record. We were disappointed that we could not actually cruise, but did have 4 lovely dinners on the boat and made some great new friends during dining and on the bus tours that were arranged for our first several cities. Ultimately we had to abandon ship and be relocated to Munich where we were put up at the Westin Grand, a very up scale hotel. We were given options for additional tours from there. Yes, being on buses was tiring, but we completely understood that our Tour Director David, and all the staff did a magnificent job under trying circumstances. We were told that Viking management would be offering some type of compensation as an offset to the problems. Shortly after the end of our travels, Viking sent an email indicating we would receive a 75% credit of the cost of our cruise toward any cruise they offered. We thought that was more than fair and will definitely take advantage of the offer. The ship itself was vintage 2009, but in excellent condition. Our room was very clean and both functional and comfortable. Dining was an absolute pleasure. The chef made dishes from various regions, but there were always options for the less adventurous. We did not get the special wines and spirits option, but the wines included in the base price were excellent. In short, the staff on board was great. Even the Captain pitched in to help get our luggage off the ship for our trip to Munich. All of the passengers we spoke to were also very complimentary of the way that adjustments were made to do as much as we could before the flooding became overwhelming. Read Less

We boarded the Viking Legend in Budapest on Sunday, October 14 and cruised for a week up the danube and extened our tour after disembarking to include 3 days in Prague all arranged through Viking. It was an amazing tour. The sights we saw were fabulous and the service and care we recieved on borad the legend was extraordinary. We were looked after every second of our trip. Catalina, our program director was a delight and David our Conceirge was everywhere. Everyone on boad was pleasant and helpful. The bar crew of Andrew, Filip and Sava were extraordinary. Peter, the on board musician was wonderful. All transfers were handled very, very well. I was particualry impressed with little things....when we reboarded the ship after a local tour ( all of which were splendid) just exchanging our boarding passes for our room keys was done most expeditiously, never leaving us feeling like cattle ( much as you are made to feel by the airlines). Our room was constantly clean. Each morning when we went to breakfast, we returned to a spotlessly clean room. One time I even forgot something, went back to my room and somehow it had already been cleaned. Their timing was down to the minute with the few exceptions of arriving early once or twice to a destination. We were truly made to feel that, as Catalina would say, the Legend was our home away from home on the Danube, except with much better service. They handled our transfer to the Prague Hilton, our check in and then our transfer to the airport seamlessly. Much to our surprise, when we reached the airport at Prague, there was the Viking rep smiling and waiting to whisk us through the check in process painlessly. By this time, I was fully expecting a Viking rep to be waiting at our home when we returned with our mail all sorted, refreshments ready and waiting. They really could not have done anything more to make us feel comfortable and welcome. The arranged tours were professional, informative and fun. We met and made many new friends aboard So well done to Viking and especially the crew and staff of the Legend. We would certainly consider taking another cruise with Viking. You gave us the gift of a wonderful vacation and memories we will cherish forever. Thanks to all aboard and all the staff on land that made our trip truly special. THANK YOU!!! John Stevens Read Less

The Viking Danube River cruise was beyond my expectations. We were very busy, and I loved touring different cities each day. Each one was interesting whether it was Passau, Germany, Salzburg, Melk, Durnstein, or Vienna, Austria, Bratislava, Slovakia, or best of all, Budapest, Hungary. We were always given some free time. The Viking Legend staff provided excellent service. The food was delicious and served very elegantly. I also enjoyed the lectures on the European Union and Mozart. Also, one afternoon, we had tea and strudel while they demonstrated making apple strudel. There were so many extra delightful surprises. For example, after we returned from an all-day trip to Salzburg, we were greated with cold drinks. When we returned from our Budapest tour, we were greated with snacks. They always made sure we had plenty of water, both in our room and before we left on a tour. When we returned from a classical concert in Vienna, they served Hungarian goulash at 10:30 PM. The rooms were not large, but we spent very little time in the room. The ship was quiet and smooth. It could not have been more enjoyable. The room was not very large, but the only time we spent in the room was to sleep. We had a French balcony on the top level. It was very quiet. I don't think you would want a room near the back of the boat though. The libary was at the back of the boat, and it was quite noisy. We were given large bottles of water each day. They showed Sound of Music on the TV the night that we went to Salzburg, which we enjoyed because we had just seen places where it had been filmed. The service was good. Each evening when we returned from dinner, we were given the daily briefing for the following day. We had our own listening devices which we charged each night in the room. Read Less

This was the first cruise my wife and I have ever taken (if you exclude the overnight ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen in 1974, during the worst storm to hit the North Sea since before D-Day - which may explain why this was the first cruise). It was a River Cruise on the Viking Legend from Passau to Budapest and we had with us our travel companions: my wife's sister and her husband. We'd decided to do it over a year ago and I called Viking to set it up, explaining to the fellow we dealt with, Zack, that we'd never done this before so some candid advice would be welcome. That set the tone for the cruise, by which I mean he was an extraordinary point of contact: helpful, informative, candid, responsive; indeed, more adjectives than I can easily list. The cruise itself went like clockwork, with people meeting us where we were to be met, getting us to the ship with no fuss or bother, and taking care of us throughout the eight days we were with them in a pleasant, low-key fashion. The ship was only a few years old, the cabins comfortable and well-designed, and the food keyed to the country we happened to be cruising through along the way. The other nice thing about the food was that it wasn't the overwhelming excess one associates with cruising. Rather it was nicely portioned for lunch and dinner and the few buffets we had were - essentially breakfast - were just enough. As for the itinerary, for us the Danube was an ideal venue, since it meanders through numerous countries and cultures, most of whose capitals are along the river, and the tours were nicely timed to see all of them, a good mix of driving and walking, with time to wander about after the 'formal' part was finished.. We stopped at Linz to bus to Salzburg, then Melk, Durnstein, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest Our favorite places were Bratislava and Budapest, plus the portion of the cruise during the day through the Wachau Valley.
