I am reading the review written by Disappointed in April 2019 and it could have been written by us ! Such a tired old boat , it's like an old peoples home . We have been on 2 previous wonderful Viking cruises which were wonderful so decided to book this one . So disappointed we may not do another. The ship including cabins are from the dark ages and really let Viking down . To emphasise this we are docked next to a brand new Viking ship and feel like moving over. Staff as usual are wonderful and a credit to you , just the ship which ruins the trip. The food and staff in the dining room is great but the room is boring and tired Looking at other companies for our next cruise, the stafg will not be as good but it may be more comfortable. In summary the Viking Legend is the Travelodge of the Viking fleet . Read Less

We chose this cruise for the tour down the Danube. Our first river cruiswe and we were thrilled. We met wonderful people and the staff was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The cruise itself was so fun and picturesque. We really enjoyed the tours and learned so much about the history and culture of the cities and tours. We started 2 days ahead in Prague and then went to Passau, Germany to start our cruise. So many places to see! The ship was clean and the cabin, although small was very organized and you had room to unpack and put your suitcase under the bed. The ports were fun and the excursions we chose were enjoyed! Panoramic tours of the cities: a wine tasting in Austria, bread making at a farm in Linz, A market tour with our chef in Vienna, A Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna. We would have loved to stay in Brataslava to enjoy the Slovakian food but sadly we were there just a half day. Such beautiful cities and towns. We loved them all - Budapest is very interesting and beautiful. We arrived at night and saw the beautiful parliament building all lit up looking gold with a full moon shining also. Very impressive. I think people with mobility issues would find this trip a challenge. Lots of walking and cobblestone streets in these centuries old cities. The food was delicious with many choices and fare from the areas we toured, The piano player at night was great. Someone complained in a previous comment - we enjoyed him. Read Less

Enjoyed every aspect of our Rhine cruise last year and was keen to experience The Danube. I wouldn’t have chosen another company as all aspects of our previous cruising experience were excellent. We wee not disappointed this year! The customer care Viking offers is second to none. Everything ran smoothly from the time we booked until the time our cruise ended. All the crew are pleasant and efficient and appear to enjoy their work which is a great reflection on the company. The food was delicious with a good range of choices and all beautifully presented and served. The accommodation is great you are so well looked after in an unfussy seemingly effortless way. The excursions took us to places of interest and well informed guides were able to provide you with facts and information you needed. There was a range of entertainment on offer . My only criticism would be that some of the singers needed a microphone. Well done Viking Read Less

We have wanted to try a river cruise for some time and we also wanted to experience a Strauss concert. This cruise satisfied both needs. The off boat tours were all amazing, very well organised and the local guides were exceptional. The lady who was Program Director was very good she was very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the food and service was extremely good. There was plenty of choice and more than enough quantity. The evening entertainment on board was better than expected and we enjoyed a dance most evenings. Meeting other nationalities was both interesting and entertaining. The attention to detail and information given both before and during the cruise was very good. The daily itineraries given each day was most helpful and made sure we were in the right place at the right time. We are definitely considering another river cruise and it would definitely be a Viking one. Read Less

Our first river cruise was delightful. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly helpful staff made it enjoyable. The food was enjoyable with the menu reflecting the countries that we were passing through as well as offering other choices plus a standard menu. The evening meals were normally at 7.00p.m. with one sitting and plenty of time to chat over the provided glass of wine. Dress was smart casual with the emphasis on casual. I only noticed one person wearing a jacket. Entertainment was limited. The pianist was good and each evening there was a local "speciality act" including opera or folk. The included trips were interesting with plenty of walking. Several of the cities had many cobbled streets and we were glad of our sure footed shoes. Some of the trips also had a significant number of steps so it is worth enquiring about this before hand if you have difficulty walking as the older buildings tended not to have disabled access. Most cities had a charge for using the rest rooms "Pay to Pee" which varied from 50 Euro cents to a Euro so make sure you have some coins as not all had a person to give change. Even McDonalds had a 50 cent entry machine. The ship occasionally docked outside town and then shuttle buses were freely provided. Most towns were busy and the ship often docked alongside other hotel boats so the view from the cabin could disappear. Read Less

The food and cleaning departments were super but the cruise directors were just horrible. 10 people were left behind in Vienna when a tour guide decided to leave 15 minutes early, guide and cruise directors didnt care at all. Entertainment on the ship was hideous music was a man playing a key board of songs from the 1960s and playing them badly. There were never enough seats in the lounge for people, and the free WiFi only worked in one small spot on the ship so everyone had to stand on top of each other to use it. Our room room smelled of dirty socks and while the cleaning tried hard to clean every surface, the manager of room services told us it was fine. Lastly we paid for a French balcony room only to see another French balcony room abutting ours one foot away every day. They stack there to four Viking boats next to each to save docking fees so all we saw was the boats next to us and at night they travelled to next destination so it was dark. Just the worst! We loved the historical sites experienced in the wonderful free and optional tours of the itinerary selected by the designers of the cruise. Our selection of the excursions available provided excellent activities for us commensurate with our age (elderly) and physical capabilities. The size of the optional groups (and even of the entire group aboard ship) was small and not uncomfortably overwhelming as we encountered aboard ocean cruise ships. The crew and workers aboard the Legend were all dedicated to providing their guests with optimum experiences. We noted that very quickly the staff on board began to remember our names--and we theirs. The open seating at the meals allowed us to circulate among the other passengers aboard so that we became familiar with many others. It was a congenial group overall. The food aboard was wonderful offering at each meal a buffet of several new options and a menu of fare that could be prepared to order. So far, the best cruise taken of our three thus far! Read Less

We have sailed on both Viking River and Viking Ocean ships, which we have enjoyed a great deal. When we saw the itinerary for this trip we decided to go. We are very glad that we did, because we had the most wonderful time. The ports of call were all amazing. We saw and learned a great deal at each stop. All the tour guides were excellent and we especially found the tour guide for the Schonbrunn Palace to be exceptional. There were many highlights of the trip, but two I would like to mention was the Mozart and Strauss concert we attended in Vienna and sailing through the Wachau Valley. We found the service on the ship to be excellent. We were met at Munich Airport by Viking representatives and were brought to the ship promptly, where our cabin was ready for us, and lunch was being served. The wait staff in the dining room was very attentive, the bar staff was top notch and our cabin was kept spotless. Even though we had a substitute program director he did a great job. The hotel director went out of his way to make sure the guests had a good time. We met many nice people and enjoyed dining with them. We found the food to be good. A nice touch was there was coffee and tea service available all day long. In the evening there was a pianist in the lounge and there was an occasional evening activity. The reason why I did not give this trip a 5 star rating was that we have sailed Viking in the past and found the Viking Legend did not have some of the amenities the other ships have. We missed the Aquavit Terrace and the food choices that were available there. We also found that the ship was in need of some updating in that we saw carpets that were worn and needed replacement. We also missed the heated bathroom floors. Before sailing, many fellow passengers received notice that the water level on the Danube was low, but we never received this e-mail. On day 6 of the cruise we were informed that the water level was too low to sail into Budapest and we would have to dock about 45 minutes away and would be bused into Budapest. We were disappointed we would not be sailing into Budapest at night, as we heard this was an amazing experience. Due to many passengers having early morning flights back to the USA, and the ship was docked a distance from the airport, Viking put a number of passengers on the last night into a hotel in Budapest. We were one of the people put into the hotel and I have to commend Viking for how they handled the situation. Even though we had to pack a day earlier than planned and say goodbye sooner to friends we had met, Viking placed us into a very nice hotel, provided a buffet dinner and had a bagged breakfast ready for us in the morning. In the morning the program director was at the hotel making sure we got on the buses safely to get to the airport. In summary we enjoyed our vacation and great deal and hope to sail on Viking again. I've always wanted to take a Viking River Cruise and was finally able to check it off my bucket list this September. I'd heard many great things about them and wasn't disappointed. The service was impeccable, the food delicious, the cabin extremely comfortable. There was always a snack available (a selection of coffees and teas from the beverage station, fresh fruit, fresh cookies) and there was always something going on. The nightly entertainment was pleasant, the selection on the television varied (not that we watched much). I loved the policy of unassigned seating, which gave you a chance to meet other cruisers. We did meet a great couple and had most of our meals together, with a revolving cast of characters each meal. Although we didn't sign on for any of the "special" (additional cost) land tours, all of the tours except one (in Passau) were wonderful and told you a great deal about the port. I would highly recommend this or any Viking River Cruise. The Danube was at historic lows and there was the fear that we might not be able to cruise to each of the ports (Passau, Linz, Krems, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest), they cut short our stop in Bratislava to ensure we could cruise to Budapest because of low water levels. The staff was fantastic and personable and would do anything to enhance your cruise experience. It was a bit expensive but I would definitely go again for a special occasion. Read Less

We have had two ocean cruises on the small motor sailer Winds tar. Outstanding. We expected similar experience from the heavily advertised Viking Danube cruise. This was another low water summer, but we were lucky. We did not have to change ships. We were unlucky in that we were docked three ships abreast turning our stateroom into a dark cave most of the time. I gather this is often the case. Our balcony was not a balcony. It was a sliding window. We had one day of no a/c. We had fumes overpowering us when our neighboring ships exhaust lined up with our intake. Passengers were ill and no one could stay in their staterooms. Another half day, no water. Throughout this, no information disseminated to the passengers who finally had a harsh confrontation with the ships steward. Tours were adequate, with a couple exceptions...biking in Wachau Valley was fabulous and could have been twice as long. Dining was in a dreary room, never outside. Food was good but menu choices repetitive. Passengers were surprisingly underdressed in the evening, many in their shorts and tees from the daytime. Don’t bother taking much in the elegant casual realm. The demographic was quite frail on the whole and the day trips labeled active were only moderate. Read Less

Viking Danube Waltz River Cruise August 2018. First two days in hotel due to low water levels. Fourth day in Vienna and ship broke down.p, generator failed. Spent three days trying to fix it but couldn’t. . Bussed to Germany and two more days in hotel. Viking and TripMate insurance will not acknowledge ship broke down. It is as if the ship never existed. Received 25% refund and future voucher. Further compensation denied by both stating that LOW WATER LEVELS resulted in itinerary changes. A COMPLETE LIE. The only low water levels were in Budapest at start of trip. We splurged and paid $12,000 for a suite since it was our 50th anniversary and would be our last big trip due to health issues and our only view on the ship was the stateroom of the boat parked next to us. In all my calls and correspondence not once was the ship Legend mentioned and that it had broken down. I got the silent treatment when I brought it up. We missed two destinations, Krems and Linz and never cruised an inch. We could not use the 25% off voucher for a future cruise and that was all Iwe was trying to get compensation for. I have never dealt with anyone as dishonest as Viking. Read Less

Don’t book book Viking river cruises. We bought the 7-day Danube Waltz from Aug 5 – 12, 2018, and spent one night cruising. Viking gave us a bus tour with hotel stays. Their boat broke down – couldn’t flush the toilets a lot of the time – and their compensation is 25 percent of our paid cruise fare, not including the airfare we had to pay to get there. We had low water at the start in Budpest and no boat, but even tough the water had been down for a month, they didn’t reschedule the cruise. For the low water, they gave us a 25 percent future cruise voucher that expires in one year. But the rest of the nonexistent cruise was Viking not taking care of its boat. I feel as though Viking is the car salesman who sells you a Mercedes, but delivers you a Yugo, and then says he will give you a discount on your next Mercedes. By withholding an appropriate refund, Viking is asking us to cover the cost of its repairs and to pick up the tab for a cruise they failed to deliver. I wrote the chairman, Torstein Hagen, but Viking said the 25 percent refund is the best they will do. Sounds like a bait-and-switch scam. Read Less

My mom likes to take her 3 "girls" (all in our 50's) on a trip each summer. This time she picked a doozy. We did the 7 night Danube Waltz with the 4 night pre-cruise extension (Munich and Salzburg). The hotels were well located, and the tours were good. It was nice to have some time to get over jet lag before boarding. Embarkation (for us) went smoothly - we pretty much just walked on, got our keys, and that was it. The ship was docked quite a way outside of Passau, and an afternoon shower meant those arriving late had to literally wade through a deep, muddy puddle to get to the ship. The ship moved in to an in town dock later that evening. That was very odd. I was surprised at how casual the ship was. My sister asked if there was a dress code for evenings, and was told no, and then "as long as you're wearing something!" Many, including me, wore shorts to the dining room many nights (it did get warm by the kitchen). Dining staff was wonderful - so cheerful all the time! Food was decent (a bit hit or miss sometimes), but besides some regional specialties there were always chicken, steak, and fish. Wine poured freely! Sodas as well. Wifi was also included, although it wasn't speedy. My DH and I kept up well via Facebook messenger and email. My sister was a bit frustrated trying to use Facetime (don't), and iMessage (often took a while), and downloading videos of her grandkids (not recommended, but I suppose it was worth it to her). The ship was compact, nicely kept, the cabins a bit on the small size (even compared to ocean cruises). We had our beds separated, which didn't help, I'm sure. I found the beds a bit hard and narrow, but after all that walking daily, I still managed to sleep well enough. We had a "french balcony" on the main level. French balcony apparently means big window (almost, but not quite, floor to ceiling) and a rail to lean on. The cabin was just a couple feet above the waterline, which made for very nice cruising, the few times we cruised during the day. There are cabins below which have small widows just above the waterline. I don't think those would appeal to me at all. The cabins one floor up wouldn't be as close to the water, plus would have the sundeck (and associated chair moving) above, which also wouldn't appeal to me, so I think we chose well. We went through 10 locks, so of course we were on the top deck for the first one (and the last, which was very deep). One side of the ship was always right up against the edge of the lock. If you were on that side, you felt you could just step over the rail.If you were in the cabin, it would get very dark as the ship sank with the water level. Of course if you took the Budapest to Passau cruise, you'd be rising with the water. Most of the tour guides for the included tours were good (one in Munich was dreadful, but our guide for Neuschwanstein more than made up for him). All guides spoke English well, and the headsets were great. We ended up taking the "easy" tours much of the time, since one sister had just injured her knee. It's nice to know they have that option, although you may miss a few things that require more steps/cobblestones/standing. We took a few extra tours (Spanish Riding school in Vienna, a home hosted visit). I found them a good break from cathedrals, churches, and castles (we still saw plenty of those!) I really love that they hand you water whenever you leave the ship, and have it available in the room (no charge). They also have umbrellas available if needed. The buses were comfortable, and never overcrowded. There were some "enrichment" activities, including making strudel, some talks, tours of the tiny galley and even tinier bridge. There were some singers one night, but the less said about them, the better. Ouch. Overall, an excellent experience. As for value for money, um, it wasn't cheap - I'm glad Mom paid! Read Less

The cruise director, as well as, all the staff, kept us informed of all procedures and processes. We liked the basic all in one pricing structure. The boat was very clean and easy to navigate. An older boat, the cabin was still well appointed, comfortable and very pleasant. Transfers from airport, to and from excursions were excellent and extremely well organized. The guides for the shore excursions were knowledgeable and friendly. The tour coaches were modern and clean, comfortable with good views. Food choices were varied and plentiful. We really liked the menu items suggested by the region visited. By the nature of the cruise the entertainment was limited, but good quality, fun and relaxing. We would definitely recommend Viking river cruises and plan to book in the future. Read Less

Viking was a dream vacation we had saved for and we were not disappointed at all! We also were lucky enough to meet and make friends with a Federal Judge on board with us who was allowed by the captain to renew our vows in the ships library, and which the crew also helped by creating a beautiful area for us, plus our guest services attendant surprised me by making a bouquet of roses for me, plus surprising us with a cake, towel swans and hearts with balloons and champagne waiting for us in our room, plus the events coordinator (who sings quite well), dedicated a song for us too! The crew did a superior job of keeping it clean and only worked when we were away. The ship was ably crewed and the personnel was friendly and competent. Dining was excellent, the wine selection was acceptable. Board entertainment was above average for such a small ship. Excursions were above average with practically no idle time. Embarkation and disembarkation was easy and pleasant. Complimentary bottled water and umbrellas were always available. Unlimited free coffee, tea and snacks were an added bonus. It was impossible to get access to an aspirin while on navigation. No children traveled with us. The cruise was not for children, most of the passengers were seniors including my wife and I. We definitely will cruise with one of your ships next year, probably we will try a sea cruise. Practically everything was included, avoiding the customary nickel and diming of most cruises. The dining experience was both visually and gastronomically pleasing, and we grew fond of the cheerful and attentive staff. We always felt well cared for and found answers to our questions at the front desk. The cabins were kept immaculate and well stocked with towels and bath products. We enjoyed the lectures and informative meetings in the lounge, especially the Mozart lecture before the concert in Vienna. My best friend and I chose this trip for a special 60th birthday cruise and a retirement present for myself. As first time cruisers of this type we thought an all inclusive escorted cruise was the way to go and it certainly was. The ship was clean and the crew were all welcoming and pleasant. Our cabin was relaxing and the floor to ceiling window was so nice to see all the scenery we were passing going down the river. The dining was amazing, our plan was to have eggs benedict every morning and creme brulee every night, the food was so fresh and some of the best I've ever had. Not one thing was near sub-par. The chef highlighted and explained the regional specialties and even gave us a tour of the kitchen. The mid ship coffee-cookie station was a favorite spot, every night Raquel would put out "good-night" oatmeal cookies and macaroons plus chocolate chip cookies were available all day with all varieties of teas and coffees. The library was a quiet place at the back of the ship to sit and relax to take in the scenery. The shore excursions were well planned, I would of liked to have had more time to shop for souvenirs. The tour buses were very comfortable, what a great way to sight-see on the way to the excursions. I would definitely go again and am thinking about an ocean cruise with Viking based on the river cruise experience. Going into Budapest at night with the well lit buildings and bridges was a sight I'll never forget. Read Less

Customer Service at headquarters was not as good the second time around. Did not have just one rep to work with. Reps were not as knowledgeable about cruise and itinerary as the first cruise we took. Also, the map and itinerary in book we received prior to sailing was incorrect. Improvements needed in Customer Service, We are looking forward to taking another cruise next year, but will be more contentious of Customer Service and not take some things for granted and get more info in writing rather than orally. We were “warned” that this ship was on its last legs for Viking. I hope this is not the case. We sailed her last week from Budapest to Passau. The ship was completely renovated. New carpet, furnishings and decor. Nothing showed any signs of wear. It was great. The staff seemed proud of their “new” ship. The winter weather was gone and we had a great time. The ship is still without an elevator. A few things still needed completion, the networked items, saves and televisions only partially worked. The staff accommodated my mobility problem very well. Viking has very special excursions, we enjoyed the night of music and dance in Vienna. When we cruise, my wife and I enjoy sea days to rest. There is no rest days here- the itenerary has too much to see and do. It was wonderful. This was our first river cruise, we will be back One day. We recommend the 2 night extension in Budapest it was very instructive, the Corinthia hotel was very nice and a good location. Read Less
