Few people travel to Russia so it gets peoples' attention when you tell them where you have been for the past couple weeks. They sincerely want to see photos and hear about the trip and it is more than just a nice gesture on their part. We had to have 5 "gatherings" here at the house to show off the photo album and explain all the educational values from the trip. Things like the population of the cities, where do people live, work and play, the traffic, the airport, cleanliness of the parks, streets and rivers are what I want to learn while there. Those are things I want to learn and the reason for my taking the trip. Then you have the luxury of having many guided tours and events, all of which are very well planned and executed and if you don't learn from them, you aren't listening to your earphones or reading provided material ahead of time. And at the end of the day, you have the pampering from the crew on the ship. All the crew members on this cruise were outstanding from the wait staff to the housekeeping. The food was GREAT, well presented and ample in quantity. Thank you for a great cruise, Read Less

With a career in retail management, I traveled all over the world: Europe, Asia, India, but I never experienced Russia. As Viking Cruise HQ is two blocks from my home, I wanted to experience a Viking River Cruise. So #1 on my bucket list was a Viking River Cruise of Russia. It did not disappoint. The trip was outstanding in all areas. The ship was beautiful. The rooms were so well designed that they comfortably held two weeks of clothing, accessories and toiletries. The time in port was ideal with three days in Moscow and St Petersburg at the beginning and end of the cruise. The days in between were spent sailing into small Russian Hamlets that were primarily a source of cruise souvenirs. My only recommendation is that Viking describes that day tours as strenuous; my husband and I needed to improve our physical stamina to better enjoy the daily outings. (The excursions in Moscow were too hard for us physically.) The special sights of Moscow's Red Square and the Kremlin were breathtaking, as was the Hermitage in St Petersburg, The evening entertainment of the Ballet and the Cossack Dancing were very enjoyable. The food service under Manager Damien was a delight. The special service by the two waiters Bim and Armando treated us like royalty. The meals were delicious and the menu varied enough for all tastes. Cruise Manager Daniel made sure every aspect of the trip was superior. Read Less

#1 on my bucket list was visiting Russia. On July 3rd we embarked on the Viking Truvor from Moscow to St Petersburg. We spent three days in Moscow touring Red Square, the Kremlin, three ornate Russian Orthodox Cathedrals, and other sites. We then sailed for five days through hamlets in the Russian Countryside to reach St Petersburg. We spent four days in St Petersburg, a rich cosmopolitan city. St Petersburg was amazing with tours of the Pushkin Museum of Art, the Hermitage Museum, two famous Russian Orthodox Churches, the Ballet, Cossack Dancing and more. The trip was marvelous. The rooms were very comfortable, laid out to easily accommodate clothing and furnishings for 13 days. The food was excellent and the restaurant staff service was exceptionable. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. We will certainly take another Viking River Cruise!!! One word of advice: get in shape. The tours are physically demanding both in length, terrain and duration. Read Less

A comfortable leisurely way to an introduction to Russia, from large cities (beginning & end) to the countryside. We recommend ending in Moscow, making the whole trip a build-up. The ship was very comfortable, the food good, the service impeccable; it was the right size of ship. The excursions were varied, interesting, even intimate, without being overwhelming in number and size; scheduling was excellent. The guides were very professional, informative and friendly, and always available. We picked a time period which was cool / cold (could not really use the outer deck effectively), but this ensured that the places visited on excursions were not over-crowded. Some of the events -- ballet, concerts -- were particularly enjoyable, as was the banya (Finnish sauna & plunge). The embarkation and disembarkation experiences were extremely smooth and easy; Viking was very well organized for a glitch-free entry / exit. We would gladly book with Viking again on another such trip elsewhere; we tend not to repeat trips. Timing is critical on any trip because associated popular excursions can easily be over-crowded, detracting from the enjoyment. Read Less

The captain and crew were knowledgeable, efficient and very friendly. The tours of Moscow and St. Petersburg were excellent. I was a little disappointed at the tour of the Hermitage because they stuffed people through very narrow corridors. The Moscow by Night tour was amazing....touring Red Square at night and seeing the Kremlin and St.Basil's lit up was breathtaking. The home visit in Uglich was fun and very welcoming. The visit to the school was vey informative...the kids were such a pleasure to meet. St. Petersburg was very full of history and great architecture. We added Helsinki, Finland at the end of the trip and it was such a beautiful city to visit. We really appreciated all the effort by Viking and the crew of the Truvor to make our trip easy and memorable. Read Less

My wife and I wanted to visit Russia and we thought this would be a good way to see the country. We had no idea what a great decision we had made. From the time we landed in Moscow to the time we left to the extended trip to Helsinki, we never touched our luggage. The service we received was exceptional. The food was fantastic. Our expectations were exceeded only by the restaurant service staff. Service to our cabin was absolutely perfect. The first day on board we found to large bottles of water in our cabin. We emptied the bottles before the evening. From that point forward on the second day we received two bottles in the morning and two in the evening without requesting anything from staff. Everyone paid attention to all our needs without being asked. Ports and shore excursions were unbelievable. We learned so much history from our leaders and they were exceptional in their knowledge of the country. We made a number of cruise friends that we plan to stay in touch with. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the Russia experience. We absolutely loved the small ship and the small number of passengers. Our cabin was perfect - clean and plenty of room. The food was fantastic and the dining staff met all of our needs and requests. I cannot say enough about the staff supporting the entire ship and cruise. Not only did they take excellent care of us, we had a great time getting to know them personally. The shore excursions were extremely well planned. The excursion leaders were well educated about Russia not only for current life styles but educating us about Russia from early history. This was a trip of a life time for my wife and myself. We thought that this would be a one time trip but we are now looking and planning for future river cruises with Viking. Meeting other people on the cruise was wonderful and finding out that most of them had taken more than one cruise with Viking and as many as seven cruises. We are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We knew we wouldn't go to Russia on our own, our usual travel plan. This cruise was ideal, we saw two major Russian cities and a few little villages. We were on board for every night, so no daily packing challenges. AND the Viking folks really know how to spoil you for any other travel. The meals were delightful with new companions several days. The entertainment was special. Our cabin was always sparkling clean and neat. Excursions were well planned and organized so that 145+ people enjoyed each port and shore visit and didn't have the sense that there were "crowds" - not even once! I can't say enough good about the crew and staffing. Our guides were well-informed and genuine. The crew was friendly and never overbearing. Yes, we would definitely love to do another cruise similar to this one. It was so relaxing and informative. Such a pleasure to travel with Viking. Read Less

We really enjoyed visiting the school and the home visit. Read Less

This was our second Viking river cruise. We did the Danube river a year ago. The Moscow to St. Petersburg was absolutely wonderful. The country was beautiful, the Russian people were wonderful, and the excursions well done. The service crew was fantastic and the service was exceptional, mostly Russian and Filipino and very friendly. The food was truly outstanding in every respect. There were two other couples with us and they agreed too that the cruise was exceptional. One of the men is a frequent world traveler and he said that it was the best trip of all that he has made over the years. Evelyn the hotel director was exceptional and truly went out of her way to make sure that all of the guests were satisfied. My wife and I truly had no complaints about the trip. Russia was the last place that my wife wanted to go in the world but she turned around 180 degrees very quickly. Our perception of Russia really has changed a lot. We found the people to be delightful, friendly, and they love Americans. They are very proud of their country and its culture and history. You should not miss the Russia river cruise. Read Less

A tour of St. Petersburg, RU was the only item on my bucket list and I was delighted to have accomplished my longtime goal. It was an excellent cruise including the accommodations on board the ship, the food, the chef, the servers and the tour guides. All were very friendly and knowledgeable. Some didn't hesitate to go out of his/her way to provide service beyond the expected or to share information that made the trip so interesting. The ports of call were very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of the region and hearing first hand descriptions of life during the Soviet era. The on-board lectures were well organized and informative. My greatest reward was touring the many churches and palaces and viewing the art and architecture. My only disappointment was the modern/interpretive dance ballet on the first night. I was expecting to see a traditional, classical ballet. But I will not judge my entire experience on that one night. Overall, Viking more that met my expectations and would would not hesitate to book with Viking again. Read Less

From the very start the holiday was wonderful. The coach journey from the airport to the Viking Truvor was comfortable and restful. The cheerful greeting as we boarded was more than expected and we were efficiently shown to our cabins. These were excellent; spacious, clean and well appointed. The dining room was lovely and we especially liked the tables for two by the windows. The dining room and kitchen staff did a wonderful job for the whole two weeks and the food was very good, including all the local delicacies which were served daily. Shore excursions were informative and visually stunning on most occasions as the museums and palaces were some of the finest we had ever seen. Cruising the rivers and lakes of Russia was fascinating and the sheer number and variants of onion domes was mind boggling. The evening entertainment was relaxing which was pleasant after the day's exertions, the lounges both being spacious and comfortable. Moscow came as a great climax to the whole cruise, a beautiful city with lots to see and enjoy. The most amazing thing about the cruise, though, was the Viking Truvor staff, who could not do enough for everyone from start to finish of the trip. The Hotel Manager, The Cruise Director, The Captain and The Maitre'D were so so helpful at all times and the rest of the crew backed them up superbly. All in all one of the best holidays we've ever had, if not the best. Read Less

We have traveled extensively, but have only started our cruising career. We have had two extensive cruises, one for 26 days, and the other for 30 days. Cruising is our preferred method of travel in the future. Having visited Europe more than 30 times, I am familiar with Europe and love it dearly. My desire to visit Russia was based on my study of history (I am a retired University VP, amongst other executive career positions in government and industry). My expectations of Russia were mixed, with an expectation of many Stalinist buildings and drab city facilities. My experience was exactly the opposite and the cruise exceeded every expectation. Russia is fantastic. St. Petersburg was a surprise and a delight. The visits to Peterhof, Catherine's Palace, the Hermitage, the Swan Lake Ballet, and the city in general were breathtaking. The quality of life was much better than expected and the Russian people were polite and helpful. Our cruise to Russia and the stops along the way have become life-time memories. Moscow was everything you could hope for and much more. The tours to the Kremlin, Red Square, the Metro, and the folk concert were simply beyond description. Our experience on board the Kirov, our cruise ship was exceptional in every respect. The food was 10 star, the staff were exceptional, the tour guides were first class, and the entire experience was amazing. We have made a movie of our cruise and have now convinced several other couples to go to Russian on Viking River Cruises. My sincere thanks to everyone associated with Viking River Cruises. I could write a book on this trip. Thanks again. Read Less
