This was actually our 2nd Viking River Cruise as two years ago, my classmate and I also did the Viking River Cruise to Eastern Europe. Obviously, we enjoyed our pre-cruise stay in Prague and the cruise itself to Budapest, Croatia, Serbia and Bucharest. And this October, six of us classmates will be doing the Rhine Ruver Cruise. Needless to say, we are happy and enjoy doing the Viking River Cruises! During our first cruise to Eastern Europe, we didn't have the leisurely walk which we joined during our Paris cruise. We hope you will have the leisurely group again for the Rhine Ruver cruise this October as the six of us classmates are 76 years old by then. In both cruises, we were very pleased with the tour guides. Please note that we have done leisure cruises with Holland America, Princess, Norwegian and Royal Carribean cruise ships since 2010. Viking Cruise is the only River Cruise we have joined and are very happy and satisfied overall. Read Less

The itinerary was beyond our expectations. We loved the tours we took, especially Giverny. The tour guides at each stop were so very informative. The dining service was exceptional. Maitre'd George and the kitchen staff did a wonderful job with avoidance of my food allergens. A special service at the American Cemetary in Normandy honoring fallen Americans was wonderful. The tour of the Normandy beaches was awe-inspiring. Paris is everything we were led to believe. Versailles, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Eifel Tower were exceptional. We did the Eifel Tower tour at night, which was a lot of fun. Vernon was unique. At Rouen seeing their Notre Dame Cathedral light show on the front of the cathedral was amazing. The church and square where St. Joan of Arc was burnt was awesome as well. The whole cruise was well worth the price and a totally wonderful experience for both my wife and me. Read Less

In 2016, some friends and I enjoyed a Seine River Cruise that included the Normandy Beaches. That cruise was with Mayflower Tours and was aboard the Amadeus, chartered from Lueftner Cruises. No sooner did we disembark the ship than I swore I would definitely return. And I did just that this past June...sailing on a similar Normandy Beaches cruise but this time with Viking River Cruises. BIG difference between the two cruises. Both river cruises included complimentary wine with both lunch and dinner, daily excursions, and basically similar stateroom amenities. However, the standard Viking Kadlin staterooms were MUCH smaller than the same category cabins on the Amadeus. Both ships were beautiful and immaculately maintained. The staff on both cruises were friendly and professional. To me the BIG difference was the quality and variety of the food, with the Viking Kadlin meals falling far short of Lueftner's Amadeus. And the cost difference was quite surprising. The Viking River Cruise was quite a bit more expensive than the one offered by Mayflower Tours. It definitely pays to shop. Read Less

I chose the Viking Paris to NormNdy River Cruise based on what I heard and was not disappointed in the least. The Crew was great and ship was beautiful. Food and the beverage service was first class. Excursions were awesome and onboard entertainment great. An Air France strike during the cruise caused some passenger concern but Viking was on top of the situation assisting in rebooking flights on other carriers. I can not say enough about the friendliness and courtesy of all onboard staff. The restaurant provided a varied menu each day and included some standard items that could be ordered each day. Other fare offered in the restaurant were regional dishes. Wine and beer are offered st no additional cost with the lunch and evening meals. Local entertainers were brought onboard at several ports of call to add to the onboard entertainment experience. During our Normandy American Cemetery visit we were able to participate in a ceremony honoring the fallen. A special event on a very special cruise. Read Less

We had heard Viking River Cruises were great! And ours was! We opted for the 3-day pre-cruise in Paris and stayed at the beautiful Marriott Opera House on Hausmann. We were met at the airport on time and were transported in a very nice Mercedes to our hotel where we checked in and met with our Viking rep at the hotel. There were free walking tours available that gave us some great history and recommendation of great places to eat. We boarded the long-ship on our 4th day for our cruise from Paris to the Beaches of Normandy. Omaha Beach was worth the trip as was the movie at the visitors center. At the American cemetery our guide conducted a very moving memorial service for us consisting of the singing of the National Anthem, prayers, recognition of veterans among our group, and we each received a red rose to place on a gravesite as we walked the rows and rows of white headstones. It was a very moving and beautiful visit. We took the optional Versailles tour, which was expensive and consisted of an included lunch at a golf course. The lunch there was terrible, but the tour was excellent. We also paid for a Paris By Night tour. It rained that evening so we didn't get to see through the bus windows as well we would have liked. It was great to see the Eiffel Tour at 11 p.m. With it's twinkling lights. We had a Veranda B room that had a lovely outdoor sitting area with 2 chairs and a table. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage to unpack our things. The room had it's own thermostat control, so we were always comfortable. All of the food was great! You could eat the buffet breakfast or choose items from a menu for all meals. We had free wine/beer with lunch and dinner. There were no assigned seats at meals which allowed you to meet lots of new people. The entertainment was wonderful with music during Happy Hour and after dinner. One evening in port a small 3-person local "soft jazz" group played, another night the piano guy sang. Both were excellent. Another evening there was a fun "dance with a staff member" contest, which was loads of fun. We met some wonderful people on the cruise as there were only 196 people aboard. Most were close to our age ranging from 60-80. The tours in each port were great, some free, some you had to pay extra for. All guides on our tours were locals and spoke English and were very knowledgeable. There were beautiful sitting areas aboard the ship. The top deck had lots of lounge chairs and also had shaded area for enjoying the view. All of the ship's staff were delightful, helpful and fun. No children are permitted, which, although we enjoy children, we didn't have to listen to whining, etc. The Captain of the ship was young and a very personable young man. My husband being retired Navy enjoyed talking with him. Our chambermaid, Gunita went the extra mile the whole trip. She noticed we had wine on the table in our room the first afternoon and that evening there were 2 wine glasses waiting for us. Our room was sparkling clean and the bath products were top-notch with fluffy towels. The bottom line is we were treated like royalty, and like family, wined and dined and loved everything about our cruise. We are already looking forward to our next cruise Amsterdam to Budapest in 2020. Read Less

Our main goal of the cruise was to visit Normandy which was awe inspiring, but the remainder of the cruise was just as interesting and exciting. Each port provided a glimpse into the history of France. All the guides were local and provided a fun-fact tour of their cities. The transportation buses were fairly new and comfortable but some provided less leg room for those who are over 6 feet is was a little cramped. The ship was beautiful and comfortable. The crew was excellent and provided you with personal touches. The stateroom was well equiped and the space was well used. There is only one restaurant on the boat but the food was very good and varied daily. The lounge doubled as a meeting place for information talks and an inclosed relaxation area. The top deck had plenty of chairs, tables and lounges and their was enough shade provided for those wishing not to be in the sun. Read Less

The ship traveled to areas I want to visit. Have taken Viking cruise before and found it to be a great value with excellent service. Everything was well organized. Planning the trip was easy and everything went smoothy including flights and getting settled on the ship. Staff very helpful. Food and amenities excellent. Included tours informative with good guides. Loved seeing Monet's home and garden. It looked liked the paintings we saw in Paris, which were amazing. The visit to Normandy was special. The area is beautiful and visiting the war memorials very moving. We extended in Paris and had a wonderful time. It was helpful to have had the tours of Paris before our stay. We were able to plan our time so we could see all the highlights in Paris. Weather was warm and sunny. Flights home were very good. A wonderful trip we would recommend it highly. Read Less

This was my 5th cruise with Viking. Three wonderful meals a day, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, shore excursions, air and airport transfer all included, I don't think you can beat the price. The Kadin has an amazing staff. Our wait staff remembered every detail of my reds. The knew I loved the chef's eggs benedict and made sure it was ready for me each morning, even when it was not on the menu. This was my first solo trip and I was a little nervous, that is why I chose Viking. I knew I didn't have to worry about a thing. The tour director even gave the waiters in the lounge orders to dance with the single girls at our table. What great fun! We spent three days in Paris before embarkation and we had a great time. We celebrated my wife's birthday with supper at the Eiffel tower and a boat cruise on the Seine River. My wife was interested in castles and we were able to visit six of them during our cruise. My father was a veteran of WWII who landed on D-Day and we visited the beaches of Normandy. We visited Monet's gardens on another shore excursion. The Ship was very nice and the crew was friendly, and helpful. We enjoyed meeting new people every night over delicious food and wine. The cabin had ample storage and the crew kept it spotless through the entire trip. This was our first cruise and we both had a wonderful trip thanks to viking and their great staff. I would highly recommend Viking they made sure every thing went smoothly from the time our plane landed until our return flight. Read Less

We wanted to experience a more intimate, friendly cruise experience. We have grown tired of the big, mega ships with thousands of passengers. The meals were of top quality and a highlight of each evening. The ship staff were always polite and willing to help with any question s we had. The excursions were right on. They were long enough so we could enjoy the locale that we were visiting and still gave us time to unwind before dinner on the ship. In general, everything went well. All the events and excursions were well planned and went off without a hitch. GREAT TRIP. We enjoyed the experience so much that we have already booked another river cruise for next summer. Both of our fathers served in Europe during the second world war and we wanted to partially retrace their footsteps throughout France and Germany. Again a very good trip. Worth every penney. The food, the service, the excursions, everything was beyond my expectations. I loved the crew on the Kadin. They saw to every need with a smile. The chef was truly outstanding. I've never had such delicious food. We were so enthralled by the landscape and one of my favorite pastimes was sitting on the observation deck and looking at the beautiful scenery. The excursions were interesting and educational, with enough free time built in that we could shop. I really enjoyed the ones in Paris where we visited several specialty shops - chocolate, cheese, wine. We had never done a river cruise and Viking had a good rating and reviews. Our only real complaint is that Viking booked our flight with Delta - DFW to Atlanta to Paris. Our experience in the Atlanta airport was horrendous. We had an 18 hour layover because Delta couldn't seem to get a plane in to Atlanta that was not in need of repair. We were totally exhausted when we reached Paris. We booked a three day pre-cruise in Paris and missed the first day completely. Our experience on the ship was wonderful. We had never cruised on a small ship and the cozy experience was wonderful. We were able to meet a lot of nice people and could choose our table for dining and sit with different people at each meal. This made the trip more interesting. The excursion to Omaha Beach was the highlight of the trip and very moving since my dad had been there during the war. We look forward to another river cruise. We were met at the airport and driven to the hotel in Paris where a Viking representative gave us a walking tour of the area near the hotel. The next day were taken on a walking tour that, among other things, showed us how to use the Metro and the train. Our tour guides were very good. Especially the guides in Paris. The guides were informative and in most cases gave us personal attention. The cruise was wonderful. The various stops were all good. We had a Veranda stateroom. We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. We enjoyed the river cruise so much we are taking another one in October, the Grand European for 15 days and can't wait to see more sights and the Viking crew as we know they'll go out of their way to make the cruise the most memorable one possible. The shore excursions and guides were wonderful. A nice variety of guided tours, with very knowledgeable guides. Learned a lot about French history, Impressionism Art and the artists. The American Normandy Military Museum focussed on the Allies building a large port, from simple beachfront, in a week! The earpieces allowed us to hear the guide even 75 yards away. This allowed us to wander a bit, not get lost, and hear everything without needing to be right next to the guide. Each day, water, even umbrellas, were distributed by the crew on debarkation. They thought of everything we could possibly need. Our ship cruised quietly through the Seine River while we enjoyed wonderful dinners, allowing a great view from our moving restaurant. The food was well prepared, and the service was outstanding, by a very pleasant crew. We loved it so much we have signed up for another Viking River Cruise on the Rhine River this fall. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the history of WWII and the Normandy Beaches. But it was so much more! The Excursions were the best, being disabled I rarely am able to see places except for in the buses. The tour guides were excellent, easy to understand and using the sound boxes made listening very easy. From Monet's Garden to Rouen's Joan of Arc each step of the way was even more interesting. My wife is retired Army and the ceremony at the American Cemetery was very well done and emotional. the Food was very good and pastries were fresh each morning you couldn't wait to get up! Our room is the same on each boat heated bathroom floors and everything you need provided. The TV had been upgraded since our last cruise and many more selections added. The on board entertainment was really an excellent piano player. Not you ship if you want entertainment. First class cruise with 1st class people. We simply just loved, loved, loved the crew! The experience onboard the ship was great in every way. We always felt so comfortable and well taken care of. The food was great with a local influence and the servers in the restaurant although not technically perfect were efficient and personable. The excursions that we went on were well organized … the only comment would be that we would have liked more time at the beaches of Normandy. The reality is that it is there is only so much you can see in one day – if you really want to see everything then you must spend several days there. The ceremony arranged by the ship was a nice touch and made a big impression on us. Overall the tour program was really well organized and the concierge did a great job organizing the tours. The Program Director was also informative, but a little high pitched and too long briefings. All the guides were clear and easy to understand. I would have liked to see an option with a smaller tour group. No complaints about anything. You get what you pay for. Viking is an excellent value for an excellent experience. Go! Now! Read Less

We chose Viking River Cruise because I had heard wonderful things about them from others where I live in Colorado. I wanted to do the Normandy to Paris cruise because my father was a World War II veteran and I wanted to see Normandy and parts of France including Paris. Furthermore, we took an Alaska Cruise tour last year and wife didn't enjoy being at sea, hence the river cruise. The Kadlin was wonderful, a new ship and our verandah stateroom (307)was great- I did spend some time on the balcony enjoying a glass of wine and watching the scenery- the observation deck was also great. I went for walks around its circumference and enjoy a beer or glass of wine while watching the countryside go by. The food was wonderful- all three meals each day. We traveled with some old classmates from Virginia and met another two couples that we shared dinners and tours with making the trip more enjoyable. The evening meals were, well, just excellent, and the wines well matched to the meals, the lamb was great and so was the seafood. We enjoyed the classes on cheeses, cooking and tour through the galley. Being an old Navy vet, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the Captain and seeing the pilot house. The service was also very good, our hotel staff was wonderful and we grew to enjoy our wait staff at the evening meals. The bar staff was also very good. The ports and shore excursions were very good, I would like to have spent more time or seen more of the Normandy beaches but understand the time limitations. The lunch venue was good, lending some local color to the excursion. We really liked our Rouen tour guide ( I wish I remembered her name, but she had studied in Australia, if I remember right). In general, the tour guides were very good and packed with local information and history. The bus tour of Paris was quite good, giving us a taste of Paris which were able to utilize when we spend additional time in Paris. We didn't travel with children, but do feel that this cruise would be appropriate for children in the their teens or older. We would definitely go again and can hardly wait for the next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

Quality of service, tours and boat. We have traveled with Viking before and chose to go again. We had exceptional food, were offered shorter walking tours and activities as well. The boat has lots of space and we like the moving round from table to table for meals to meet more people. The side trip to Normandy Beach was especially important as my father had landed in the same area during WWII. There was additional time at port in Paris in which we were able to connect with our German daughter (exchange student) and walk the streets of Paris. We are not shoppers who need additional items but did enjoy seeing outdoor markets, small villages and places for lunch or a drink. The staff was well organized and the processes for getting on/off the board were smooth. We had added the option of airport pick-up and delivery which went well. We have marked off one of our bucket list items with the Monet garden tour and village. Absolutely as we pictured. Bus drivers were friendly and informative. We had been on a Danube River Cruise with Viking years ago and we really enjoyed our vacation - everything was first class - food, service, accommodations, etc. Therefore, we decided to go on a Paris/Normandy trip this time around and we had such a wonderful time on the river cruise - along with the 3 day Paris extension - all through Viking with transfers included - Viking made our trip very easy for us! The food and service is just fabulous; the day trips - which are included in the price - were educational and fun; the ship was lovely - and the cabins are comfortable. The top deck has a track so you can get some exercise each day or you can sit and enjoy the sailing. The sights along the river are just beautiful - the homes, towns, churches are so lovely. Before dinner each evening, Viking staff discussed the following day's planned excursions - where we were going and what we would be seeing, etc. There was nothing that you would want or need.
