This was my 1st Viking cruise but my 9th cruise overall (including 1 prior river cruise). As a retirement present, my wife & I decided to break open the piggy bank for an upscale vacation in France. Viking's commercials are very enticing, but the actual experience was somewhat disappointing. Overall, we had a good time in France, but based on previous cruises I expected more. Let's start with some positives: 1. Our program director, Brenten, was excellent. He seemed to be everywhere at once, always smiling, always active. 2. Captain Stuhl was a visible presence on board & open to interacting with guests. 3. The lounge performer, Blondie (not to be confused with Debbie Harry!), was a multi-talented gentleman with a good repertoire. 4. The included tours were good for the most part. Now for the not-so-good aspects of our cruise. The cabin was small, even by cruise ship standards. The bathroom was microscopic, with such a low ceiling that my hand scraped against it every time I brushed my hair. We paid a lot extra for a "deluxe" veranda room which is exactly the same as a regular veranda except for a more central location. On a ship this small that doesn't make a big difference. And we barely used the veranda because the terrace & the sun deck were so easily accessible. One thing that surprised me was the impersonality of the service. On prior cruises I got used to being treated as an individual & greeted by name, with my personal preferences noted & remembered. On Viking this was not true. Service was perfunctory at best, with little effort to personalize it or even act pleasantly toward guests. (I make an exception for 2 servers - Laszlo & Stela - who at least smiled as they worked). It was the same for cabin stewards. On all previous cruises the steward practically became a member of the family. This time there was no effort at personal communication or interaction. Finally, the food. Nothing was awful, but nothing exceeded banquet hall quality. We were asked about allergies on the 1st day but this was never honored. Each day my wife had to struggle to find enough on the menu that wouldn't make her sick. The worst was during our trip to Normandy. We were specifically asked about dietary needs in advance, as they needed to notify the restaurant where we were stopping for lunch. At least 3 crew members verified this information with my wife, yet at the restaurant she was presented with a platter filled with the one vegetable that she said she couldn't eat. In summary, I felt I overpaid for a substandard shipboard experience. Viking should spend less on commercials & mailings, more on training staff about making guests feel like guests. Read Less

A great compromise between me and my husband, especially saving money by booking well in advance. He got fulfilled his dream to view the historic WW2 Normandy battlegrounds, and I got to accomplish my dream to experience the charm, the beauty, and the history of Paris and the gorgeous sights along the Seine while the excellent tour guides, tour drivers, and Viking crew orchestrated a wonderful trip itinerary from the airport arrival gate all the way back to the departure desk at CDG airport. The boat was beautiful, spacious, and provided a wonderfully smooth ride along the river. We spent much time on the upper deck enjoy the scenic French countrysides. We always had access to staff and crew to help with translation, tours, food, and service. This was an excellent introduction to Paris by seeing many sights and smoothly being guided through the entrance gates and constantly able to see and hear our guides while touring at an easy pace around each scenic and historic venue. I am of a military family (Army), and have learned about the D-day invasion from family and books. I also am very excited about history and reading is an important part of my life. So, when this experience was offered by Viking, I jumped at the opportunity. This cruise made me feel like I stepped into the history books that sit on my desk. Notre Dame, the Louvre, King Richard the Lion Hearted, Giverny and Monet, Vernon, Rouen, and very emotionally - Omaha Beach, the invasion plans inscribed in the memorial, and the white cross against the kelly green green grase and dark green trees in American cemetery. The night before each excursion, the staff would describe what we were about to see the next day, so that when we stepped on shore, the history books, the staff descriptions, and the scenery all blended into a fabulous experience. We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We'd cruised the Danube with Viking before and had a great experience. Janet wanted to see Paris and i was eager to tour the Normandy beaches, so we both got something we wanted. I crashed in bed when we arrived on the Kadlin but Janet & another passenger took a shuttle into the city to explore on their own. I strongly recommend using Viking Air for your flights. We had no problems & the layovers were not too long or too short! We had a standard cabin and it was very comfortable-what little time we spent in it (other than sleeping & showering). We don't cruise to spend time lounging in our cabin. The meals were exquisite - tailored to the cuisine of the regions of France we were seeing. Staff were great, helpful & attentive! Activities and excursions were well organized and informative & entertaining. We would certainly do another Viking cruise! They know how to do it! ...Joe Zima Read Less

We selected to cruise from Paris to Normandy as my wife wished to celebrate her birthday with a review of the Eifel Tower. On my bucket list was to visit the beaches of Normandy, and we both were excited about our side excursion to Oxford England to visit the very castle where Downton Abby was filmed. Overall, a great cruise experience and the staff and crew were fantastic. We met loads of new friends and cruising buddies along the way. The ship was very easy to get around on and all meals were exceptional. Our shore excursions could not have been any better and the tour guides were phenomenal. We got to peek inside with a much better perspective at all of the side excursions that we would not have had access to if doing on our own. Great job to Viking and it's crew and staffs. Our education levels were raised to new heights because of Viking and it's staff. Will book again on Viking!! Read Less

We had heard Viking River Cruises were great! And ours was! We opted for the 3-day pre-cruise in Paris and stayed at the beautiful Marriott Opera House on Hausmann. We were met at the airport on time and were transported in a very nice Mercedes to our hotel where we checked in and met with our Viking rep at the hotel. There were free walking tours available that gave us some great history and recommendation of great places to eat. We boarded the long-ship on our 4th day for our cruise from Paris to the Beaches of Normandy. Omaha Beach was worth the trip as was the movie at the visitors center. At the American cemetery our guide conducted a very moving memorial service for us consisting of the singing of the National Anthem, prayers, recognition of veterans among our group, and we each received a red rose to place on a gravesite as we walked the rows and rows of white headstones. It was a very moving and beautiful visit. We took the optional Versailles tour, which was expensive and consisted of an included lunch at a golf course. The lunch there was terrible, but the tour was excellent. We also paid for a Paris By Night tour. It rained that evening so we didn't get to see through the bus windows as well we would have liked. It was great to see the Eiffel Tour at 11 p.m. With it's twinkling lights. We had a Veranda B room that had a lovely outdoor sitting area with 2 chairs and a table. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage to unpack our things. The room had it's own thermostat control, so we were always comfortable. All of the food was great! You could eat the buffet breakfast or choose items from a menu for all meals. We had free wine/beer with lunch and dinner. There were no assigned seats at meals which allowed you to meet lots of new people. The entertainment was wonderful with music during Happy Hour and after dinner. One evening in port a small 3-person local "soft jazz" group played, another night the piano guy sang. Both were excellent. Another evening there was a fun "dance with a staff member" contest, which was loads of fun. We met some wonderful people on the cruise as there were only 196 people aboard. Most were close to our age ranging from 60-80. The tours in each port were great, some free, some you had to pay extra for. All guides on our tours were locals and spoke English and were very knowledgeable. There were beautiful sitting areas aboard the ship. The top deck had lots of lounge chairs and also had shaded area for enjoying the view. All of the ship's staff were delightful, helpful and fun. No children are permitted, which, although we enjoy children, we didn't have to listen to whining, etc. The Captain of the ship was young and a very personable young man. My husband being retired Navy enjoyed talking with him. Our chambermaid, Gunita went the extra mile the whole trip. She noticed we had wine on the table in our room the first afternoon and that evening there were 2 wine glasses waiting for us. Our room was sparkling clean and the bath products were top-notch with fluffy towels. The bottom line is we were treated like royalty, and like family, wined and dined and loved everything about our cruise. We are already looking forward to our next cruise Amsterdam to Budapest in 2020. Read Less

The service was excellent, the cabins were very clean, the food and nightly entertainment was amazing. And the excursions were well planned, informative and memorable. We were traveling with a party of 8. In our group there were 4 couples. As a group, we especially liked the way we were treated. The guides did their best to make certain we were in the same tour group each and every day. The attendants on board did their best to make sure we were seated together at each meal. The servers we very attendant when it came to refilling drinks and clearing away dishes. At the end of a long day of touring, it was comforting to arrive back to the boat and enjoy a warm beverage and a cookie. It was the little special touches that made Viking a great choice. Viking did most of the logistical planning including air flights, meeting us at the airport, bringing us to the ship, along with many other niceties that impressed us so very much. Each meal was excellent, service again excellent the staff and crew also excellent. The ports and excursions were well planned and went without a hitch, thoughtfully and engineered to make the trip an enjoyable pleasure. Our cabin was clean, well maintained, comfortable along with the patio. The air conditioning was very good as was the TV. We certainly had a good time meeting and socializing with other guests at dinner and other activities in the ship and on deck. Our excursions were handled with us, the guests, in mind, water was freely given for each trip the buses used were the best. We were fortunate that this trip was chosen by us and Viking River Cruises certainly exceeded our expectations, Thank you Viking. Read Less

My wife was interested in castles and we were able to visit six of them during our cruise. My father was a veteran of WWII who landed on D-Day and we visited the beaches of Normandy. We visited Monet's gardens on another shore excursion. The Ship was very nice and the crew was friendly, and helpful. We enjoyed meeting new people every night over delicious food and wine. The cabin had ample storage and the crew kept it spotless through the entire trip. This was our first cruise and we both had a wonderful trip thanks to viking and their great staff. We wanted to experience a more intimate, friendly cruise experience. We have grown tired of the big, mega ships with thousands of passengers. The meals were of top quality and a highlight of each evening. The ship staff were always polite and willing to help with any question s we had. The excursions were right on. They were long enough so we could enjoy the locale that we were visiting and still gave us time to unwind before dinner on the ship. In general, everything went well. All the events and excursions were well planned and went off without a hitch. GREAT TRIP. We enjoyed the experience so much that we have already booked another river cruise for next summer. Both of our fathers served in Europe during the second world war and we wanted to partially retrace their footsteps throughout France and Germany. Again a very good trip. Worth every penney. It was a bucket list item to go to Giverny and was going to England for a tour of English gardens. Thought since I would be there so close that I would include the Paris tour. The trip was well organized, from finding the Viking Tour people at the airport when we arrived to being escorted through the airport by a representative when we left. Almost every experience was perfect, especially with the system of earphones that connected to the guides. The only negative was on the only excursion we paid for - Versailles. The crowds were large and extremely rude. The cabin was comfortable and very nicely decorated, as was the entire ship. The chef and wait staff were accommodating of my food allergies. They were sociable and pleasant, you could tell them enjoyed their jobs. I enjoyed the pace of the trip with excursions most days and then time to just sit and watch the "world" go by. I would suggest a menu that provided choices for just a sandwich and fruit at the smaller restaurant, rather than a full meal. I would caution travelers to review the options recorded for any special deals. Although we chose to use the credit given as our gratuities, it was somehow recorded as the on board beverage package, that we did not discover until four days in. I don't drink so I would never have chosen that. The on board staff said they could not remedy the issue. Read Less

We chose this lovely cruise because it was recommended as an ideal "first timers" trip for non cruisers. Friends recommended our itinerary for our anniversary. Our special day we were at the gardens in Giverny and it was perfect. That evening we were serenaded by "our song" from the marvelous pianist/vocalist and we also received a sparkling dessert to be shared with our tablemates. Could not have been better. We felt spoiled. Every day brought new experiences. We could take part or not and that was delightful. We loved the education component and our trip on board organizer was exceptionally good at his job. We met interesting people and had wonderful wine fueled conversations as the sun set and the music filled the lounge. Who could ask for more? When something is so much better than what you anticipated you can only say "Thank You Viking for helping us celebrate our marriage milestone" in such a perfect way. And yes, we would choose to go again and bring friends with us to share the experience. Read Less

Excursions were so interesting and full of knowledgeable information. After the cruise ended, we opted to spend some post-cruise days in the Loire valley. Was so worth it!! We visited chateaus in fine places-Chenonceaux, Amboise and Chambord and the cities of Tours and Orleans. So much beauty, so many nice French folks and such history! We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. We enjoyed the river cruise so much we are taking another one in October, the Grand European for 15 days and can't wait to see more sights and the Viking crew as we know they'll go out of their way to make the cruise the most memorable one possible. Paris is always a great destination. Just walking around the city is a great pleasure. Lunch in a little brasserie near Notre Dame added to that pleasure. And, a visit to Notre Dame is good anytime - a place of peace. We had never been to see Monet's gardens. This was a reason for the trip. The gardens more than lived up to expectations even though we were too early for the lilies to be in bloom. Our guide was wonderful, very knowledgeable. We took lots of photos, and had to buy a guide to the gardens to figure out all the variety of flowers. (The gift shop was an excellent shopping stop.) Omaha Beach and the American cemetery were very moving places. Rouen and the smaller towns along the way were most pleasant. And then, there was the simple pleasure of cruising on the Seine River. As always on Viking, the food was excellent, the service friendly and unparalleled, and the cabins most comfortable at the end of a hard day of tourism. Food was superior with gourmet meals for lunch and dinner. I chose Continental Breakfasts just because I knew the exquisite meals of lunch and dinner with excellent wines were coming up in a few hours. Viking Kadlin is a newer ship. The food was great with a local influence and the servers in the restaurant although not technically perfect were efficient and personable. The excursions that we went on were well organized … the only comment would be that we would have liked more time at the beaches of Normandy. The reality is that it is there is only so much you can see in one day – if you really want to see everything then you must spend several days there. The ceremony arranged by the ship was a nice touch and made a big impression on us. Overall the tour program was really well organized and the concierge did a great job organizing the tours. The Program Director was also informative, but a little high pitched and too long briefings. All the guides were clear and easy to understand. We have cruised the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii so when our friends called about a good deal on a Viking River cruise in France we were intrigued. It ended the day before our 40th Wedding anniversery. Freinds , Anniversery and value--seemed like it was meant to happen. This was the Paris to Normandy cruise on the Kadlin. The price tag was twice our usual Caribbean cruising and with upfront payment this will probably make River Cruising a special treat not a routine event. We did add the 3 day pre-cruise Paris extension and were glad we made those arrangements. The pre-cruise extension gave more time to explore Paris on our own and recuperate from the flight before the cruise. Our friends who went straight from the airport to the boat were exhausted for the first 2 days. Our Viking Hotel representative noted her observation that those who come before the cruise enjoy the time more than those who stay after the cruise. Those after the cruise are tired from the cruise. We hired our own guide for tours in Paris those three days and used Viking's when we moved to the Kadlin. We went with the Viking Cabaret experience which was very enjoyable. It was a late evening and not having to coordinate transportation was big plus. Our Balcony cabin was comfortable and functional.which suited us welll. The Kadlin is well laid out as one would expect on a new boat. The staff for the most part were attentive but in the background. The meals were delicious and well served. Having the wine included meant I did not have to spend time trying to match the right wine at an affordable price at each meal as was done on prior ocean cruises. The Cruise Director was very personable, a wealth of information and made sure all went smoothly. The evening cultural events were more enjoyable than I expected. There was a good balance between tours and events and time to relax. The pace is much slower than a typical Caribbean cruise and allowed more time to savor the culture rather than be constantly active, The tours provided with the cruise were professional and enjoyable. Size of the groups was kept manageable. They provided a good exposure to the culture for those of us who had not been to France. I suspect if one has spent significant time in France they would have been too touristy. Best yet there was no sticker shock at the end of the cruise. Return to the airport and getting us to our plans was well orchestrated and smooth as was the whole experience. This river cruise is generally not designed for children. If you are to consider bringing children I would suggest take a river cruise yourself and then decide. Right age, right child and this could be a special memory. Wrong age wrong child could make this a trip you wish you had not chosen. There were no children on our cruise. The intamincy of the boat allowed us to meet some interesting and enjoyable people on this cruise. There is more personal interaction with other cruisers than normally found on a large boat. The boat was big enough when we found someone who was not enjoyable for us it was easy enough to put distance between us afterwards. We love to travel and my Wife and I both agreed this is our favorite adventure together. 40+ years of adventures, so that mean this cruise can be very special. We look forward to enjoying another river cruise when we can afford it in a few years. Read Less

We were greeted with a warm towel upon our arrival onto the ship and it just got better from there. The staff was wonderful-so friendly and eager to help with any question or concern. The ship was beautiful and clean. Our cabin was spacious and the housekeeping staff did an awesome job at keeping it spotless. The activities on the ship were great. Our program director, Lionel, gave a daily briefing on what we could expect on our next excursion as well as his humorous take on river boat sailing. He was great! We really liked learning about the cities and towns where we docked. We also liked the exposure to the culture of France, from the cheese tasting to the French singing group to the informative talks. The menu also highlighted dishes from Normandy. All of the food was ample and delicious. Our chef was superb and the wait staff is amazing!! All of the ports we visited were spectacular! The audio devices that are provided really make the sightseeing that much better. All of our tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We definitely recommend Viking to everyone who asks about our vacation. We have already booked another one for next year!! Thanks, Viking, for an unforgettable vacation! Read Less

This was my husband's first trip to Europe. It was thoroughly delightful. He was in seventh heaven with every historical venue from the Arch de Triomphe to the Normandy Beaches. The room was extremely nice, the food was exquisite, the service was superb. The only disappointment was the amount of time we had to tour Versailles with the group. We could have used at least another hour at the site. However, Napolean's Chateau later that afternoon was grand !! Given the proximity of those two sites...we should have lunched nearby instead of going back to the ship for lunch. That would have given us much more time at Versailles. Not only would we love to sail the Seine again but we have already booked the Rhine Getaway for next year..with a couple that we met on the Seine cruise. Thank you Viking for our 1st Grand Adventure !! There will be more ! Read Less
