I am of a military family (Army), and have learned about the D-day invasion from family and books. I also am very excited about history and reading is an important part of my life. So, when this experience was offered by Viking, I jumped at the opportunity. This cruise made me feel like I stepped into the history books that sit on my desk. Notre Dame, the Louvre, King Richard the Lion Hearted, Giverny and Monet, Vernon, Rouen, and very emotionally - Omaha Beach, the invasion plans inscribed in the memorial, and the white cross against the kelly green green grase and dark green trees in American cemetery. The night before each excursion, the staff would describe what we were about to see the next day, so that when we stepped on shore, the history books, the staff descriptions, and the scenery all blended into a fabulous experience. An awesome experience! Read Less

After friends recommending Viking, we decided to go on a river cruise. We enjoyed the size of the boat and lack of "fanfare". The food was excellent. The ports of call were wonderful. The fall was a perfect time to travel as it isn't as hot. We were able to see the fall colors. The tour of Normandy was excellent. This was a very relaxing cruise. We didn't have to hurry. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and fun to listen to. If you enjoy taking pictures, there were plenty of opportunities. We also enjoyed the guy who played the piano each evening. Added to the atmosphere. One tour event was at the memorial at Normandy beach. After a few words, two air force planes flew toward us as they became closer, each made a turn. Very emotional. I would recommend for anyone to take a river cruise for a uniquely different experience. Read Less

It was a life time goal to see Normandy so our experience with Viking previously had been so stellar we decided the best way to achieve that goal was with a trusted provider! We were not disappointed. The service is top notch, the food is exceptional and the accommodations are first rate. We met new people that will become life long friends, learned more about the rich history of the area and of the wines and cheeses also. This is one of the particular things I always tell people who ar considering a river cruise. During th sailing time there is usually beautiful scenery to enjoy on either side of the ship and when you reach a port there is a tour to educate you about the area and also leave you with time to experience it on your own. I highly recommend any of the cruises offered by Viking as a result of our two previous sailings. Read Less

We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. We enjoyed the river cruise so much we are taking another one in October, the Grand European for 15 days and can't wait to see more sights and the Viking crew as we know they'll go out of their way to make the cruise the most memorable one possible. We chose this cruise for the history of WWII and the Normandy Beaches. But it was so much more! The Excursions were the best, being disabled I rarely am able to see places except for in the buses. The tour guides were excellent, easy to understand and using the sound boxes made listening very easy. From Monet's Garden to Rouen's Joan of Arc each step of the way was even more interesting. My wife is retired Army and the ceremony at the American Cemetery was very well done and emotional. the Food was very good and pastries were fresh each morning you couldn't wait to get up! Our room is the same on each boat heated bathroom floors and everything you need provided. The TV had been upgraded since our last cruise and many more selections added. The on board entertainment was really an excellent piano player. Not you ship if you want entertainment. We stayed in Paris 2 nights following the cruise, we were shown how to use the subway ah so easy and clean. The Hotel was next to many great bakeries and restaurants. Great shopping! When it was time to go to the airport they picked us up in a Jaguar! All went very smoothly, looking forward to another adventure! Read Less

We loved everything about this Viking Cruise. The ship was brand new and absolutely beautiful. Our cabin was nicely appointed. We had a spacious balcony where we could sit and enjoy the passing scenery. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food and wine was amazing. The trips into port were always fun and informative with local tour guides. The only thing we lacked were bicycles but next time we will rent them in port. We started our trip in LePec, a suburb of Paris adjacent to the very historic town of St. Germaine-en-laye. We sailed from Paris to Normandy with stops in Rouen to see the great cathedral, Monet's house and gardens at Giverny and several other ports of call in historic and charming towns along the Seine. We also had a wonderful day in Paris. The highlight was a day spent at the Normandy beaches including a walk through the American cemetery and World War II museum. Read Less

This cruise was by far and hands-down, one of the best vacations/experiences my wife and I have ever had! Our room on the ship was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. The crew on the ship was amazing, they made you want for nothing! The food, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, was nothing short of fantastic! The shore excursions that were provided were amazing. And you had choices of additional excursions you could do, which we did some of them had a wonderful time. Some of the excursions we did were... The Louvre, The Palace of Versailles, Claude Monets home, Notre Dame cathedral , Arc de Triomphe, The Eiffel Tower, King Richard the Lion Hearts castle , actual site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, and multiple landing sites at the beaches of Normandy, including the cemetery at Normandy, which words cannot describe the feelings/ emotions that you experience when you are there! My wife and I both highly recommend that you put this trip high on your "bucket list" We are planning another Viking European river cruise in the near future, can't wait! Read Less

We selected this cruise on the recommendation of our travelling companions. My wife and I have cruised extensively, but never a "river" cruise. As we are now retired, we also wanted to check a few things off the "bucket list" and Paris was high on the list. The travel from Eastern USA to Paris was lengthy. As we arrived on the day of embarkation, we brought with us a fair amount of jet lag. Next time we will make the time to spend 2-3 days at our destination first. Viking has such programs available, but we were unable to synch it with our fellow travelers. The reception and boarding were fuss-free. The Kadlin is a small but well appointed tri-deck ship that is well designed and easily accommodates the 320 or so passengers. As we cruised north to Normandy, the pace was slow and easy and the ride was smooth. Scenery was spectacular. The (included) excursions were well run and quite enriching. Our visits to Paris (day and night), Rouen, Les Andelys, Vernon (Monet's garden at Ginverny) and especially the Normandy beaches made indelible memories. The food was excellent and, of course, included in the fare...as was a fairly good wine selection with meals. The cruise director and his staff were friendly, very approachable and professional. The cabin and balcony was about the same size as we were used to on ocean cruises. Entertainment was good - but the aforementioned jet lag made us less than "party animals" the first 2-3 nights. The atmosphere of the ship was sedate - no kids and most passengers were retirees like us. This isn't Carnival.... The only "issue" we had was not Viking's fault. The tour of Versailles was cancelled at the last minute due to a French employee strike. I am given to understand that such actions are as frequent as rain there. The cruise director offered instead to bring us to Montserrat - which excited both myself and my bride - but the tour members on the bus "voted" to return to the ship. Instead, we spent the day in a local suburb of Paris and actually had a great time touring the local scene - but I would have rather seen Montserrat. Oh well. All in all, I will cruise again with Viking. Indeed, we are heading out to the Caribbean on an ocean cruise with them next month. These folks know their business and value your time and your patronage. Although I would expect no less, I rarely see it on many of the cruise lines I have used. Well done, gents. Read Less

Our first River Cruise. We had a group of 6 adults aging from 34 to 69. All of us absolutely loved this trip and experience. Everything about the trip is 5 star. One of the best crews that we have ever had on a cruise!!! The pre-cruise stay in Paris was also excellent and it was great to have the Viking guide available in the hotel. Transportation to and from the airport was extremely easy in Paris with the help of the Viking guide. They helped with our luggage and also guided us through the "maze" at the airport. In case there are middle age tourists who are "afraid" that the crowd will be too old: We were told that River Cruises only had "old" people as guests, so we were actually expecting the majority of the cruisers to be even older than we were. We found that while many were our age (mostly in the 60's), there was a variety of ages on board. I do think our son (34 yr old) was the youngest passenger; however, many of the crew, including the captain, were younger than he was. Even at his young age, he thoroughly enjoyed everything about the cruise! This type of cruise is probably not great for younger childen, but definitely is great for anyone over 18. Read Less
