It was recommended by several friends that had already taken it. It was important for us that it was a small cruise oriented to more mature people, navigated on a river, offered excursions in every Port, and everything was practically included. It was easy making reservations and getting more detailed information from the very professional travel agent from Viking. The ship was elegantly set, with many inviting seating arrangements, an upper Deck geared to socialize. Our suit Veranda AA was so comfortable with all the necessary amenities, and a lovely balcony. Dinning was compared to a five stars restaurant, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food was incredibly exquisite. The attention of the staff was also beyond expectations, not only they learned all our names, but they had a genuine smile on their faces at all times, and were so attentive and gracious. The entertainment after dinner was lovely and so much fun. We went with one of our daughters and son in law, in spite of being the youngest ones on the trip they also had a terrific time. The cities in the different countries visited, and the excursions on very comfortable buses, were a phenomenal cultured experience, completed by the expertise of the tour guides. Viking made the whole trip from beginning to end smoothly, enjoyable, and unforgettable. We are looking forward the next one. Read Less

We had wanted to do a small river cruise for such a long time. Our friends were thinking the same thing, so we sealed the deal when free air and shipboard credit was offered to sail the Rhine. We all had ocean cruised, but the Viking river cruise is rated at the top of our experiences. Our rooms were perfect, housekeeping friendly and efficient. I can’t rave wildly enough about the regional cuisine and dining! The staff was amazing and could make anything happen. Our activity director, Emily, could not have been any more knowledgeable and friendly, a wealth of information. We added days in Amsterdam and were so sorry that we didn’t add them for Switzerland too, Every excursion we took, both the included and optional, we wonderfully coordinated, the guides had excellent English, and added so much to our days. There is no doubt that we will take another Viking trip! Read Less

Never considered, nor had any interest in this type of cruise/vacation. Suddenly after receiving an email with offer of special pricing for cruise & airfare, we decided to "go for it". So glad we did. Viking made us feel like their only passenger from the very first day until our return home. They really know how to manage every angle of your vacation, while at the same time totally staying out of your way. From meeting us at the airport on arrival, to stacking our luggage in front of our bus prior to disembarkation, we were totally convinced Viking truly deserves their reputation for being #1. Ship was awesome, and service at the level of a 5 Star hotel/restaurant. Our suite cabin was beautiful and just the right size. We definitely recommend the 2 room suite over a single. Ports were well planned and thought out, as were the shore excursions. Buses were like new, clean, comfortable and the drivers never once had us wondering if we were going to survive the trip. Our only issue was related to the crowds we encountered while on tour(s). Not sure how this could be avoided by Viking or anyone else for that matter; perhaps less famous/popular locations. Of course that too would to some degree defeat the purpose of the trip, so just be prepared for lots of people and lines. The best feature of the trip was perhaps the least noticed; the crew. These people are truly wonderful and so professional. Many we probably never even saw, such as engineering, navigating, etc. The entire onboard staff was professional, ready to assist us at any time, in any way possible. Ship was clean, quite and felt like it wasn't even moving most of time. Food was beyond our expectation and the service was head spinning. Many knew and called us by our first names. How they do that is a mystery, but really highlights Viking's promise of being first class from beginning to end. Read Less

This was an outstanding cruise up the Rhine River from Basel to Amsterdam. We opted for the optional 3 days in Lucern Switzerland before heading to Basel to begin our cruise and we're glad we did! What a fantastic stay we had in the city. So glad we took the Stansehorn Cable Car up into the Swiss mountains - tremendous views!! We visited Breisach Germany where we stopped in a wonderful place called Hofgut-Sternen. Here we purchased a cuckoo clock and saw some beer steins, glassware and Christmas decorations all made by local craftsmen. We also attended a demonstration on how to make Black Forest Cake. The village of Colmar Germany is extremely picturesque and not to be missed. We saw Strasbourg France where we got to visit Europes' Parliament Building and the towns cathedral. Next up was Mannheim, Heidelberg (yet another awesome cathedral) & Rudesheim Germany where we took part in the Dine in Rudesheim am Rhein tour. Great dinner and great wine! Then it was on to Koblenz and Cologne where we took part in the Cologne Beer culture Dinner. The highlight of Cologne (and perhaps our entire trip) was the amazing Cathedral. We finished our journey in Kinderdijk then Amsterdam. Every shore excursion we took was top notch, allowing us extra time to explore on our own in each of the towns we visited. The food and accommodations on board the Viking Ingvi were terrific as was the entire staff - very friendly and efficient. All in all a most memorable trip that will bring us back to our next Viking River Cruise in the not too distant future! Read Less

Doing a river cruise had been on our bucket list for sometime and what better way to celebrate my 80th birthday! On reflection we should have booked the cruise earlier because we did not get to choose a cabin and all the post cruise stays were booked. We did pay for Air Plus which was an advantage, KLM were extremely helpful. Embarkation went well so much smoother than a ocean cruise The crew on the Ingvi were very courteous and helpful but our special thanks must go to Emilie, the cruise director. She was energetic, polite and helpful all day, every day. This lady loves her job and it shows! The excursions were good and it was nice that they were included in the price of the cruise. We chose to do some additional excursions and they were excellent. Evening entertainment was most enjoyable. Food was good although I must say my husband thought the steaks were not very tender. The staff in the dining room do a great job. We have already booked another cruise on the Danube for next year. It happens to be on the Ingvi! We are definitely hooked on river cruises. Read Less

Many friends had recommended Viking Cruises to me so I decided to try one. I have nothing but high praise for everything. As soon as I landed at the Amsterdam airport, a very friendly representative met me. She really set the tone for the whole trip. Upon reaching the ship, I was so impressed that my cabin was ready for me. I was also thrilled to know a lovely buffet lunch was awaiting me as well. The next surprise was to learn that a guide would be arriving soon to begin a walking tour of Amsterdam. What a great way to begin a vacation! The ship was beautiful. My cabin was so comfortable and the food was superb. Everyone on board was wonderful to me. I enjoyed the tours and all the destinations.I thought everything was so well paced.Offering bottled water before each tour was a very nice touch. It's impossible to describe the many excellent things on this cruise, the cabin, the crew, the entertainment each night was very good, the food was too good, and the tours were unbelievable too. We opted for the pre-cruise extra days in Budapest. Our hotel was marvelous and right in the middle of everything we wanted to see. All were a short walk away. The restaurants in the hotel and in the vicinity were all excellent too. Food on board was always well prepared and served by the staff in a very efficient manner. The choices were always great and I can't say enough about the choice of beverages at every meal. Entertainment was good too. Each evening program was well thought out and pertinent to our voyage on the river. Very entertaining at each stop. Our first cruise on a Viking river boat will not be our last one. Cruising the Danube River was something on my wife's bucket list. What an incredible journey it turned out to be. Starting in Budapest, we explored the city on our own before setting sail as well as taking the cruise provided tour. The included tours were very good and provided many highlights of all the ports we docked in. We took advantage of all that were offered and added several on our own. The highlight was a bike tour through the Wachau Valley wine country. Spectacular views at a leisurely pace. There were about 180 passenger aboard with a crew of 49 to attend to our needs. Very good service all around. Bartender was very knowledgeable. Food was very good. They offered local fair from all the ports we passed through which added to the romance of the cruise. Nightly entertainment was provided by locals which added flavor to the journey. We met some very nice people on board. Service was wonderful. After our final stop in Passau, we spent an additional 3 days in Prague. Great city. I'd recommend this cruise as a way to get a taste of Europe along one of her famous rivers. Read Less

We arrived in Budapest 2 days early. Fanni and Andrea were wonderful. Great concierge service. Gave us great ideas and directions. Agnes took us on the Taste of Budapest tour. She was a wonderful guide. Carmen in Melk was also a terrific guide, wonderful sense of humor. On our post extension tour to Salzburg and Munich, Fred was so knowledgeable and was an outstanding guide. It was also interesting to take a brief bus tour of Marcos' home town (Oberammergau). Friends ask us what was our favorite part of the cruise. Difficult to say...too many choices. All shore excursions were very organized. Cabins are a little small. Next time we would upgrade to a suite with veranda and French balcony. Wonderful service. Dining room staff were top notch. We celebrated our 50th anniversary on the cruise in Vienna. The Dining room staff made it memorable. The pre-cruise hotel (the Corinthia in Budapest) was an elegant hotel. The post-cruise hotel (Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg) was wonderfully refurbished with huge rooms. The Munich hotel (Hilton Munich Park) was a typical business man's hotel, but walking distance to a bier garden, and restaurants. We would definitely take another river cruise. Read Less

We had heard that Viking was the best and they proved it. The itinerary had places that we had never been yet also allowed us to revisit some of our past favorites. The size of the ship allowed us to get to know many of our shipmates and gain lasting friendships. With less than 200 passengers rather than thousands, we also knew most of our crew and felt comfortable asking questions. The food was superb. There were many local specialties as well as other international fares available. The waiters always had very solid recommendations. The excursions were excellent. We were very impressed with the former Eastern cities like Budapest, Bratislava, and Cesky Krumlov. Our favorite days were in Cesky Krumlov and Salzburg. Some passengers were a little surprised that meals were not included after disembarking in Passau and being bussed to Salzburg and Munich. So be prepared if you are not on the ship some days. I was very interested in the European history and the areas that this cruise was covering. I do have one suggestion to add and that is not to have so much leisure time when visiting a site. For Czechi Kremlov, we had about 2 hours for lunch and leisure time. Whereas that could have been shortened by an hour to give us time to visit inside the castle. This tour was around the castles and not being able to visit inside the castle was disappointing. I think a better planning on the time would be much better received by your customers. We really enjoyed the intimate setting and staff's attention to all details. Our tour coordinators were great and we can not say enough for their dedication and knowledge to serving your guests. Also, food was really good. Enjoyed the lavish breakfast buffet every morning. We would definitely be taking more Viking River cruises in the future. Read Less

Our coach tour before the cruise included Neuschwanstein Castle, a must-see site. We enjoyed seeing sights along the "Sound of Music" tour out of Salzburg also. Cruising with shore excursions allowed us to view many historical sites with the comfort of "going home" to our cabin each night. The cruising itself was as smooth as silk, with the only rocking sensation we experienced that of the ship turning around to dock in Budapest early on our first day there. Our walking group was assigned by virtue of my husband's slower speed, and it made the excursions very comfortable for him. The day trip to Cesky Krumlov was well worth the bus ride, and our "leisure group" guide, Oli, made sure we could all keep up with the walk. We enjoyed the dining room staff members who unfailingly performed their duties with good humor and accuracy. The entrees each evening provided a wide variety of options while allowing for the "meat and potatoes" preferences of some. Our Program Director was so personable that we felt we had gained another son by the end of the trip. Our Maitre 'D was also a highlight, engaging us and our table mates in conversations and with great humor. Portion sizes in the dining room were exactly right, especially when we were enjoying three meals a day. Our tour of the galley left us appreciating even more how wonderful the food was, considering its compact space. The housekeeping staff and director were very attentive and made certain that we had everything we needed. They even dealt with my husband returning some items to the gift shop after he determined we could use our shipboard credit another way. Our home visit on the outskirts of Bratislava was a wonderful diversion from all of the historical sites. We think our cruisemates missed a great opportunity, since only 5 were along on that side trip, besides our driver and interpreter. Upon returning home and regaling a friend about some new insights we gained, she remarked that, "That is something you wouldn't know if you traveled on your own." Precisely! Read Less

Our past experience with Viking was excellent. The price was comparable to other lines. We like the Viking takes care of us in every aspect from the time we step off the plan to the boarding to return home. The itinerary was well planned giving us enough time to enjoy the ship and the stops and yet not boring. The commentary while traveling through the countryside was very helpful and interesting with history and folklore mixed in. The timing of our entry into Budapest was spectacular. It was such a wonderful surprise. Our cabin was small but adequate. The balcony type window made it possible to get fresh air and see the passing scenery while lying in bed. There was sufficient variety in the menu with a combination of buffet and service. The variety of items was quality rather than quantity. We preferred that. The dinner service was excellent. One evening we returned late to the ship because we had been visiting relatives. When the kitchen staff learned we had not eaten past the dinner hour, they provided a meal for us. The evening entertainment was modest but enjoyable. We are not "night people" so this was fine. The included shore excursions were good and well planned. The local guides and tours contracted were informative, and experienced in pacing the tours. The bus drivers were fabulous in their skill. We had no complaints about any of the arrangements Viking made. We did both the pre cruise and post cruise packages. Both were well worth the time and expense. We were introduced to things we didn't know existed! We love history and art, culture and food. This filled the bill. Read Less

I chose this cruise (the only cruise that I had been on) because I wanted to visit with a cousin in Amsterdam before embarking on my trip. The countries that were highlighted were ones that I had wanted to visit. And, a river cruise seemed much more manageable to me....I traveled alone. There wasn't anything that I would have changed about the cruise. It was all that I had hoped it would be. Mother Nature caused the only things that I would change. It turned cold and rainy the second week, which made for some cold and wet tours. However, the area in which we traveled needed rain badly and the captain had to get creative at the locks and some docking locations. The food choices were excellent and the food itself was always sooooo good. My only problem was my own will power. As it was, I returned home 10 pounds heavier than when I left. I enjoyed every bite and didn't regret the weight gain. It was a wonderful experience for me. Read Less

We were attracted to the small ship experience after hearing horror stories about the cattle- car voyages others told us about. The small ship Viking river cruises had great reviews and their attention to detail made the cruise a great value. The room, the food and the staff all surpassed our expectations. The excursions were a delight and the optional ones (even though they were pricey) really added a lot to the total experience. We arrived two days early in Budapest after a trying flight from Portland, Oregon to Budapest on Delta Airlines. Through no fault of Viking, we arrived eight hours late and in spite of notifying Viking no one met us the airport. We took a cab and Viking apologized and reimbursed us. Budapest is an exciting and vibrant city; the Budapest Intercontinental was an amazing surprise. We wish we had booked several more days there. Most of the shore excisions were fun and informative but we would recommend that you diplomatically insist on what you want from the guide if you feel short changed. We plan to go again when we can arrange it, perhaps to the Mediterranean or British Isles. Viking is a great company! Read Less

We are 3 couples who usually cruise ocean ships but decided to travel across Europe by Viking Riverboat. As our excitement grew during the planning phase, we were joined by two other couples of friends. We were booking fairly late in the season so were lucky to get 5 cabins close together on the lower level. None of us had ever cruised with Viking before. We all thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and have become fans of Viking. All five couples are senior and do not share the same interests or physical abilities. We found the Viking cruise allowed us to be a group but still have independent activities. We requested and got the one table large enough to all of us for dinners so we ate together, sharing tales of our adventures that day. Actually we found another guest who was 93 traveling alone and managed to get him at our table as well. Our independence began with embarkation: three couples did the Viking pre-cruise tour in Budapest, another came one night early and booked their stay themselves and the fifth couple came straight to the ship from the airport. We all very much enjoyed Budapest. We all experienced a very easy embarkation procedure. Most of us usually travel in cabins with balconies so we were not sure how we would like rooms on the lower level with high windows. We all found this to not be an issue. During travel on the river we found going to the lounge or up on the outside decks offered an opportunity to see both sides of the river and gave the added benefit of enjoying visiting other passengers, A feature which we really enjoyed were the included tours. Viking usually includes one at each stop. All five couples used this basic tour to get an overview of the city or village and then we each did our own things for the rest of the time. One couple did extensive hiking tours; 3 couples often signed up for the optional tours in the city while the fifth couple stayed on board reading or touring near the docked riverboat. We enjoyed the itinerary across Europe, getting a good feel for the land as it changes across the countries. I remember our excitement at encountering the first lock but soon we were veterans of passing though locks and began assessing them on depth raised or lowered, as well as the length and size of the lock itself. By the end of the cruise we were talking about where we could go for our next Viking cruise. This one on the Viking Ingvi just got us started! Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and we could not have been more pleased. The crew of the Ingvi went out of their way to may this cruise a memorable experience. Because the number of passengers is small, we got to know many of the other passengers and everyone raved about the customer service, food, individual assistance, and daily shore excursions. The entire cruise is very organized. Someone said it is like a Swiss watch times 100. Disembarkation was effortless and all questions were answered before I even had the chance to ask them. I highly recommend this ship and its crew. The daily tours were very historical, with beautiful scenery and knowledgeable tour guides. There was usually plenty of time to tour on our own after the guides part. Special arrangements were made for guests with difficultly keeping up. The food was near gourmet quality and the servers were great. They quickly learned each travelers likes and dislikes and often made recommendations based on that. Every evening the crew held a meeting that explained what to expect the next day and what their recommendations were for that evening meal. Read Less

We have been ocean cruising for years and wanted to visit inland countries and cities. This cruise offered us the opportunity to visit both large cities and small villages. We also took advantage of a post cruise 3 day visit to Prague. Transfers were handled expeditiously on arrival and during the post trip excursion. Only issue that arose was result of Delta computer snafu. Viking rep at our Hotel insisted we go to airport when we knew from experience that there would be no earlier departure than the one we booked. We were left at the hotel and took advantage of another day in Prague. When we went to the airport our fellow travelers were there disgruntled after having spent the day in an airport. The ship was immaculate, the service impeccable and the food delicious. River cruising is a much more intimate experience than Ocean cruising and we made some good friends. We missed evening entertainment although there was a piano player and dancing. On a few evenings entertainment was brought on the ship. As a result of high water levels locks were backed up so we missed the excursion to Salzburg that we most looked forward to. Our tour guides on most excursions were well informed, energetic and sometimes entertaining. Our cabin was smaller than expected and we are not large people. Staff on the ship were friendliest we have experienced on any cruise. Overall, it was a great experience and a memorable trip. I have always wanted to go on a Viking Cruise - the ships always seem very luxurious. There was an itinerary which attracted me - Amsterdam to Budapest - which I could just afford. My travel agent got me a good deal so I was hooked. The cruise was all I expected and more. My cabin was small but all I ever use such accommodation for is a bed, a shower and somewhere to hang my clothes. It fitted all these and was cleaned every day. Indeed the whole staff were always helpful and cheerful. The food was top of the range. There was not a bad meal from breakfast through lunch to dinner. There was no set table so you could move among the guests as you wish. The choice of meal was usually three starters (At lunch this was a serve yourself choice) although you could have what was on the menu. There followed three main courses including a vegetarian choice each day and the desert was usually a calorie uncontrolled delight. At lunch and dinner you were offered wine / beer / soft drinks of your choice none of which were stinted. If all this was too much there was a separate dining area which served much simpler food. The entertainment was fairly simple - an excellent pianist plus the occasional local singers and/or dancers during an evening. There was an included trip at each port of call plus, if you wanted additional trips at a cost. Some of them I felt were a little highly priced. One or two of the trips could do with a review as they either duplicated an earlier trip or were not quite how they were described in the brochure. I understand some of them were new expeditions which may account for their slight failings. We were occasionally held up at locks and for five days we could not go on the upper sun deck because of the height of the river and the lowness of the bridges. My one regret. I had looked forward to being sat on the upper deck at the Chain Bridge in Budapest at night but, out of the control of Viking, it was the weekend of the Red Bull Acrobatic Plane Race and, because of "Health and Safety" we had to park quite some distance from the centre of the city and I didn't chance to do this. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it to every one. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking. This ship and the one we had cruised on in the Netherlands, was a little smaller than our cruise on the Yangtze river in China. Over all, the space was a little less but fine. The entire crew and service was excellent. They participated in the activities with the passengers and there was always someone close at hand when we were out on a tour conducted by a local guide. In preparation for the tour, Viking sent us a ' learn to say a few phrases ' video in each of the languages/countries we visited. Although many of the locals we met spoke English [ as a 2nd or 3rd language ], it helped in 'bonding' when we at least tried to say Hello or Thank you. Read Less

It was a life long dream of my life partner to take this Grand European River cruise. After her retirement from 28 years of teaching, I decided to make her dream come true. Everything about this cruise was magical. From the longboat Viking Ingvi and it's smaller size ( about 200 guests) to the many small towns that we visited, it was a marvelous trip. The food and service were top notch. We really got to know all the crew and most of the friendly passengers. The daily excursions were well planned and completely safe. They prepared for all types of abilities. On board there were many extras such as a master glass blower showing his skills, then local German singers giving a spirited show. Then a guided tour topside as we cruised the beautiful German countryside. So many extras. We danced every night....and Wednesday was schnapps night. The best was the friendly, courteous and outstanding staff of the Ingvi. They made it a very special 2 weeks. I highly recommend starting in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest...the excitement just builds from day 1 to day 15. Worth paying extra for a veranda to sit outside with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. One suggestion: plan one or more extra nights before and after the cruise. It helps ease the airplane/airport pain. Read Less

We chose this cruise upon the recommendation of several friends that have previously cruise Viking. I will list the pros and cons for our 15 day journey below: Pros: 1. We were very pleased with the personal service provided by our Cruise Director, Rob and our Concierge, Tamara. 2. Most of the remaining Ingvi staff were friendly, hard working and appeared to really enjoy their day to day work. 3. Our Chef was amazing and the food exceptional! 4. Our sailing in April was a very good choice as the water level of the Danube, Main and Rhine were high so a ship swap was not necessary. 5. As the Viking Ships are small we established some close friendships as a result of our cruise. 6. Our daily stops were excellent and our included tours very interesting. 7. Our Cruise Director and Concierge accompanied us on the shore excursions even in inclement weather. 8. The included wine with Lunch and Dinner was enjoyed by all. 9. Our German theme night was truly fun! Staff dressed in German attire and exceptional German food delicious. 10. We did a 3 day pre-cruise extension in Prague that was truly amazing! Cons: 1. We did have our top balcony closed down for five days due to low bridges as a result of the high water level. 2. Our bedding was not changed for the entire 15 day journey. Not sure whether this was just our cabin or routine for the cruise line. 3. We went through 68 locks on this transit. At first the entry and exit of locks was interesting but near the end of our journey they were a great deal less so! 4. Our evening entertainment on most nights was a piano player. Unfortunately his accompanying vocals were those of a poor Karaoke singer so we did not spend time in the lounge after Dinner. All in all, we will definitely consider Viking for future travels. Always felt safe. Every local guide were excellent. Loved the "quiet boxes". Favorite places were Budapest, Nuremberg, Vienna, Cologne. We have already recommended Viking Cruises to friends. Many are interested in our experiences and one couple has already booked a cruise. Two more couples may book soon. Would definitely go on another river cruise and would only use VIKING RIVER CRUISES. We enjoyed the cruise immensely. There was one major thing that we should have payed more attention to. First we had a great time in Budapest , our embarkation point; however, we spent maybe a couple of hours in Amsterdam, our destination port (at the airport). To do over we would have stayed a day or two in Amsterdam (and not part of the extended tour). The cruise itself was great. Good food and excellent service by both the cabin attendants and the wait staff. Some of the land tours were a stretch--seemed like the tour guide was wasting time; but overall they rated very good. Take advantage of some of the optional tours-- The Hungarian Horseman, Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, the Mozart Concert, Rothenburg ob der Tauber (a must see) and the BMW factory are all worth the extra money. This was our third river cruise with additional city stays. We always sign up for thr air package as well. The last was the Grand European from Amsterdam to Budapest with stays in Prague and Amsterdam. Everything was great even the unfortunate need to change ships due to low river levels. Viking made this as painless as possible by placing all baggage back in the same room on a new ship. They even bussed us back to the port we missed so we saw the same places. The extra excursions and on board activities were very entertaining and relaxing. This cruise was less educational than Waterways of the Tzars or Imperial Jewels of China. We had a great time with the crew and cruise director whose trivia games and musical presentations passed the evening hours after dinner. The food is always ample and delicious. We also enjoy the silver spirits package so that we can sample wines and liquor varieties that we have never tried before. We travel as a couple and are both seniors. The dining arrangements allow you to mix with other couples and develop cruise friendships and dining companions. The on shore activities are interesting, cultural and diverse. They even include many shopping opportunities. The walking tours are generally paced to accommodate those with mobility challenges. We thoroughly enjoyed the pre and post cruise visits to Amsterdam and Prague. The hotel in Amsterdam was fantastic with a sensational room view of the Harbour. After brief overview tours you are left on your own to tour and travel by public transportation. Read Less
