We had been wanting to do a European river cruise for quite a few years. We had been receiving Viking literature and finally decided to book a trip. We added on a Lucerne pre-excursion. It was a great way to get to Europe early to explore and get accustomed to the time zone difference. Viking was spot on with all the details. All their t's were crossed and their i's were dotted. We felt like royalty from the moment we got off the plane. The ship was wonderful and had all the amenities one would need. Our cabin was a comfortable retreat at the end of a long day of exploring. And the deck was a bonus for relaxing in the evening or watching the beautiful countryside go by while sailing. The tours throughout the cruise were top notch. The free tours were just as fabulous as the paid tours. The food on the ship was fabulous in both the dining room and the Aquavit. Their customer service was wonderful and top notch. As an example, while we sailed through the Rhine Gorge, it was a cool, crisp morning; they came around with blankets and hot cocoa (with a little extra "warmth" to add, if desired). The staff was amazing and most remembered our names by Day 2. They were always smiling and very attentive. We would do another Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Thanks Viking for making our dream come true!! Read Less

I’d been wanting to go on a Viking river cruise for years, but I was always concerned that I would be the youngest on the ship, by a decade. At 47, that simply was not the case. There were people of all ages (younger and older), that are all well traveled and love the adventure of Viking. The staff is absolutely amazing. Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton would drool for these people! Every single person, from the cabin steward to the captain were warm, welcoming, and open to help in any way. We loved the food!! Every day was different with varieties to meet any palette. And the chef is just wonderful! If you hang out in the lounge after dinner, you’ll definitely see him. He’s loves to mingle with the guests, so don’t be shy! The highlight of the trip for me was my engagement. My boyfriend planned the whole thing with the senior officers and they pulled off a complete surprise! The captain was even involved! This happened in front of the entire ship and on the last night of the cruise....it felt like we were surrounded by family and friends. Viking creates an environment that is welcoming and fun! Don’t wait to go! It’s a trip you will remember for years to come. Read Less

Fantastic trip! As totally novice cruisers we were apprehensive about our first trip overseas. Booking directly with efficient/knowledgeable Viking staff went smoothly. A little confusion on short time span to add trip insurance (ask a lot of questions). Took the discount 3.3%. Made a big mistake in filling out personal data by NOT including passport numbers by the time we made full payment. (We had gotten our passports later). This apparently led to a delay in getting our plane reservations well after the stated 60 days before departure!! We had made multiple calls to Viking to try to rectify lack of reservations and on three occasions were told to "wait a few days, and you will get the info". We Didn't! Tip: Fortunately my wife had been accessing a VIKING travelers Facebook page - This was a GREAT source of info! One of the super Viking travelers gave us a Viking contact that immediately got our plane reservations!!! The running commentary on the site was extremely helpful - You should use it! Because of the delay we were booked on Delta flights from Phil to Atlanta (2.5Hrs), then flew back north past Phil to Amsterdam?? We wisely used our airline/upscale credit cards to enter Delta's courtesy clubs and enjoyed a few anniversary drinks and food. Tip: Contrary to popular belief traveling the day before the fourth of July (Thurs) the courtesy clubs were devoid of business travelers because of the mid-week holiday! Last glitch was sitting in Amsterdam airport an hour waiting for Viking shuttle. After that we had a Fabulous Time. The ship was beautiful (even compared to several competitor ships docked nearby), The staff was five star rivaling many US top hotels. The food was very good, plenty of specials and standard fair that was table served or buffet serviced. The lounge service was superb - TIP: If you like higher end beer, wine, cocktails, soda - GET the all inclusive SILVER SPIRITS package. It provides access to better wine at meals, champagne at breakfast and top shelf drinks at any open lounge hours. Check the individual drink menu prices on-line (canned soda - $5 Euro!!). Tip: Get to know the names of the staff - Your extra effort will pay big dividends. They love to become part of your experience. The inclusive tours were all worthwhile (Black Forest got the lowest score - long bus ride for short tourist trap stop). The local tour guides provided were all excellent! WE liked Cologne the best, Cathedral amazing! Shopping & food wonderful. We managed to have our 40th Wedding Anniversary meal at a restaurant we stumbled across that had the same name as the one we got engaged at 41 years ago in NYC - "Mama Leone's" ! To complete the romantic nostalgia, we bought a lock and hung it on the "LOCK" bridge across the Rhine and tossed the key. Many of our fellow passengers bragged about the optional pub tour!! Don't miss Captain's Bridge tour. Loved our on-board Tour Director - Renee ("Sooooooo,....!!!!), Rebecca - Hotel manager, Super Mario - Master of the lounge, the extraordinary dining staff - Will, Mickey, Chris and too many others to mention!!!! If you have the time, take the optional add-on tour to Zermatt-Geneva. Includes a not to be missed train ride into the Alps, a Swiss town, have a meal across from the Matterhorn after a quirky cog wheel train ride scaling mountain sides ending above the clouds and lodging in a most unusually furnished hotel. The tour finished off with a Lake Geneva cruise, winery visit, UN tour and exploration of old town in Geneva! Our tour guide (Tina) on the optional tour was like an encyclopedia and maximized our appreciation of Switzerland. Tip: The passengers on board were very friendly. Try to sit at different table at each meal! A lot of interesting encounters and coincidences - a couple with the same wedding date also 40 years ago, a traveler with same full name as our son's girlfriend, and someone from the old neighborhood. Many married couples, grandparent and mature grandchild, school teachers and retirees, pairs and groups, mostly first-timers and averaging about 50 years old. Read Less

Friends had recommended I go. Transfer at the airport was so easy. Didn't spend much time in the room, but it was what we needed and the beds were quite comfortable. I loved that each evening we had the following day's itinerary waiting for us. The staff could not have been more helpful and almost became family. The food was delicious. I have food restrictions which were addressed. One morning, we walked to our table, planned to put my purse down and go get my omelet. When I turned around, here is the waiter with my plate - chef had seen me walk in and remembered after 3 mornings how I like my omelet. How impressive is that? The outings were well-planned, interesting and so informative. We booked additional ones besides the included ones. Any time I had a question, someone was there to assist. The onboard entertainment was wonderful and varied. It was a nice way to relax at the end of the day. \We have already planned my next trip :), can't wait to go down the Danube. Read Less

I still keep in touch with our new friends from Sheffield. Dining was excellent. Almost bottomless wine glasses was a plus. Service for meals was superb, wonderful and friendly staff. Being able to chat with them was enjoyable and u=interesting to note their various background. German oompah entertainment was really fun, as ist brought back memories of past visits. I especially enjoyed Strasbourg and Koeln, history, architecture, and the sun. the tour guides at each port of call were excellent, with good knowledge of each place we visited, also excellent English. Our cabin was a bit smallish but comfortable. The layout of the ship proved comfortable, with the bar and dining areas close-by. The River portion was so relaxing and comfortable with excellent accommodations and service by the crew. We feel like we really got to see and experience the sites and culture of the areas we visited. The tour guides were exceptional and gave excellent advice when we went off on our own.especilly enjoyed Vienna and Bratislava and our extension in Budapest. Because the weather was nice, we were able to walk back to the ship from the Monastery at Melk and shop in the town. The crew were so friendly and accommodating and got to know us individually. The food was well prepared, fresh, healthy and tasted good, even if the menu was not particularly exciting, there was always something we enjoyed eating. The food, especially the steaks were high quality. We enjoyed our meals and fellow travelers. We felt pampered and appreciated. Read Less

Cruising the Danube River was something on my wife's bucket list. What an incredible journey it turned out to be. Starting in Budapest, we explored the city on our own before setting sail as well as taking the cruise provided tour. The included tours were very good and provided many highlights of all the ports we docked in. We took advantage of all that were offered and added several on our own. The highlight was a bike tour through the Wachau Valley wine country. Spectacular views at a leisurely pace. There were about 180 passenger aboard with a crew of 49 to attend to our needs. Very good service all around. Bartender was very knowledgeable. Food was very good. They offered local fair from all the ports we passed through which added to the romance of the cruise. Nightly entertainment was provided by locals which added flavor to the journey. We met some very nice people on board. Service was wonderful. After our final stop in Passau, we spent an additional 3 days in Prague. Great city. I'd recommend this cruise as a way to get a taste of Europe along one of her famous rivers. Read Less

Word of mouth says Viking are by far the best. After one week covering 5 countries in seven days without unpacking and repacking I can highly recommend this cruise. Service exceptional and quality food, stateroom classy and kept exceptionally clean. Tours broad and varied and comprehensive. Management friendly and super organised. Sail was smooth and on time perfectly. Dining experience from a comprehensive breakfast buffet with optional waiter service, a two venue choice for lunch, and immaculately presented and tasty dinner dining experience, every request and allergy catered for, nothing was too much trouble for Cruz the maitre D and his unified and positively cheery crew. All tours had local guides with an immense knowledge of the Cities, customs, history and colourful stories that made every destination enchanting. The housekeeping crew on board are exceptional, every detail in our stateroom was attended to, and the speed and efficiency that these crew work at is an immense achievement all co ordinated by the super competent Marina. My husband and I chose this cruise as our first real vacation in about 10 years. Needless to say, after completing 2 graduate degrees and completely rebuilding our business in a new location, we were greatly in need of rest and relaxation. Viking and the crew gave us just what we needed and much more! The staff was amazing! They were all so pleasant even when we were so tired we could hardly smile (just the first day because it was a long flight with 2 connections and we missed the second connection because of mechanical problems with the plane, making our journey to the cruise over 36 hours without sleep. Next time we will upgrade our flight arrangements and leave more than 2 hours to catch an international connection.) We were running so late that there was not much time to explore our departure city and all we really wanted to do was sleep, but by the second day, we couldn't help smiling as our local guides were all so positive and passionate about sharing their home with us. We were so grateful that Viking included excursions at every port, allowing us to get to know the territory and the history without us having to do a whole lot of planning. It was all very educational, but in a relaxed manner. It was also nice to know we would be back on board this gorgeous boat for all our meals. The river view is so calming and the food is excellent. It's also nice not to worry about tipping and everything else that goes with eating out. The boat really felt like our home away from home, but kind of like a royal home with amazing service! I loved that cookies and tea were always available when I needed a pick-me-up! I feel terrible that I can't remember the name of our cruise coordinator, but he was amazing when my husband accidently left his cell phone in a bathroom in one of the castles we had just left. He knew just who to call and stayed incredibly calm and we had the phone back before we left port. I simply cannot speak highly enough of this incredible team! Thank you for an amazing vacation! This was our 40th anniversary trip & our first River Cruise. From beginning to end, it was superb! We had WONDERFUL weather, great tour guides, excellent accommodations, & awesome Viking staff! We were treated to an anniversary serenade & dessert at dinner 2 hrs after embarkation! On the last evening on board, I asked HOW the staff knew who we were, and they chuckled as to how they pulled it off(at check in, the desk staff sneaked a picture of us-unbeknownst to us, and the walked the dining room to find us, then notified the Maitre D where we were sitting!). We made lots of friends that we will hopefully keep in touch with after the trip! In hindsight, we wished we had extended our trip at BOTH ends, Budapest and Amsterdam, as we didn't know what to expect, and wished we could have spent more time in BOTH cities. Glass blower had a demo on the boat- AWESOME! We have shared our trip memories with family & friends & would DEFINITELY do it again. My sister & her best friend (& both spouses), have already booked a Viking River cruise for next summer (on our strong recommendation)! The staff also helped me surprise my husband by celebrating his birthday which also happened to fall during our cruise! We enjoyed the included tours and also booked several extra tours that were also a great value! We felt like royalty in our mini suite! Read Less

I have always wanted to go on a Viking Cruise - the ships always seem very luxurious. There was an itinerary which attracted me - Amsterdam to Budapest - which I could just afford. My travel agent got me a good deal so I was hooked. The cruise was all I expected and more. My cabin was small but all I ever use such accommodation for is a bed, a shower and somewhere to hang my clothes. It fitted all these and was cleaned every day. Indeed the whole staff were always helpful and cheerful. The food was top of the range. There was not a bad meal from breakfast through lunch to dinner. There was no set table so you could move among the guests as you wish. The choice of meal was usually three starters (At lunch this was a serve yourself choice) although you could have what was on the menu. There followed three main courses including a vegetarian choice each day and the desert was usually a calorie uncontrolled delight. At lunch and dinner you were offered wine / beer / soft drinks of your choice none of which were stinted. If all this was too much there was a separate dining area which served much simpler food. The entertainment was fairly simple - an excellent pianist plus the occasional local singers and/or dancers during an evening. There was an included trip at each port of call plus, if you wanted additional trips at a cost. Some of them I felt were a little highly priced. One or two of the trips could do with a review as they either duplicated an earlier trip or were not quite how they were described in the brochure. I understand some of them were new expeditions which may account for their slight failings. We were occasionally held up at locks and for five days we could not go on the upper sun deck because of the height of the river and the lowness of the bridges. My one regret. I had looked forward to being sat on the upper deck at the Chain Bridge in Budapest at night but, out of the control of Viking, it was the weekend of the Red Bull Acrobatic Plane Race and, because of "Health and Safety" we had to park quite some distance from the centre of the city and I didn't chance to do this. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it to every one. Read Less

It was a life long dream of my life partner to take this Grand European River cruise. After her retirement from 28 years of teaching, I decided to make her dream come true. Everything about this cruise was magical. From the longboat Viking Ingvi and it's smaller size ( about 200 guests) to the many small towns that we visited, it was a marvelous trip. The food and service were top notch. We really got to know all the crew and most of the friendly passengers. The daily excursions were well planned and completely safe. They prepared for all types of abilities. On board there were many extras such as a master glass blower showing his skills, then local German singers giving a spirited show. Then a guided tour topside as we cruised the beautiful German countryside. So many extras. We danced every night....and Wednesday was schnapps night. The best was the friendly, courteous and outstanding staff of the Ingvi. They made it a very special 2 weeks. I highly recommend starting in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest...the excitement just builds from day 1 to day 15. Worth paying extra for a veranda to sit outside with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. One suggestion: plan one or more extra nights before and after the cruise. It helps ease the airplane/airport pain. Read Less

We've been on one other river cruise (France) and loved it so much we were a little hesitant that this 14 day cruise might not be as nice. We shouldn't have worried. The ship was wonderful, the itinerary was wonderful and the entire Viking staff was amazing. Bottom line, we LOVED both the cruise line (Viking) and the itinerary (Grand European). We arrived at Budapest airport in the afternoon of boarding day and were greeted (along with a lot of other people) by representatives of various river cruise lines. After check-in, we boarded a bus and set off for the dock. It was a little "iffy" at first as the crew on the dock didn't seem to realize that there was a bus full of people arriving from the airport (and neither did the front desk staff as it took several minutes for someone to appear). After that, everything was absolutely seamless. We were shown to our cabin and then told a light lunch was being served. Of course it was the first day and everyone was exploring the ship and meeting each other, but the atmosphere was still calm and relaxed. The next day we awoke, ate breakfast and prepared for our included excursion. This was our only opportunity to explore Budapest but it gave us an overview and we were able to explore a little more, close to the boat, on our own in the afternoon. That evening, after dinner, the captain pulled away from the dock and gave us a brief cruise past the lights of Budapest. Beautiful! During the remainder of our cruise we enjoyed good weather which helped but what we really enjoyed was the itinerary itself -- absolutely wonderful. I never dreamed that a major river (the Danube) would be narrow enough to enjoy the passing countryside, almost at arm's length. The cities we visited were amazing and the included tours, for the most part were very enjoyable and gave you a good overview of the cities. The food and drinks on board were quite good and, while the serving sizes may be smaller than some are used to on cruise ships, I found it refreshing not to have to leave food on my plate because there was too much. Plus, if you wanted more, you received it! The buffets at breakfast and lunch were great and I loved the fact that you had two choices for dining. We loved, loved our bar staff and enjoyed many evenings just sitting and chatting with them. We found everyone on the Ingvi Viking staff to be warm and welcoming and we really appreciated the fact that the crew did not try to call everyone by name. Instead, they chatted and bantered with the guests, answered questions, pointed out sights and just acted more like friends. In fact, the entire atmosphere of the ship was one of relaxed friendship. You could tell that from the Captain on down, everyone looked out for each other and, if someone needed help, another crew member was right there. I have never been on a cruise, river or sea, where there was such an obvious feeling of camaraderie. If I could cruise again with the same ship, the same crew, the same itinerary and the same weather, I'd be standing on the dock, suitcase in hand right now. As it is, I now count Viking as one of my favorite, if not my favorite, cruise lines. (Of course, I've decided that I love river cruising!!) Read Less

This was our third river cruise with additional city stays. We always sign up for thr air package as well. The last was the Grand European from Amsterdam to Budapest with stays in Prague and Amsterdam. Everything was great even the unfortunate need to change ships due to low river levels. Viking made this as painless as possible by placing all baggage back in the same room on a new ship. They even bussed us back to the port we missed so we saw the same places. The extra excursions and on board activities were very entertaining and relaxing. This cruise was less educational than Waterways of the Tzars or Imperial Jewels of China. We had a great time with the crew and cruise director whose trivia games and musical presentations passed the evening hours after dinner. The food is always ample and delicious. We also enjoy the silver spirits package so that we can sample wines and liquor varieties that we have never tried before. We travel as a couple and are both seniors. The dining arrangements allow you to mix with other couples and develop cruise friendships and dining companions. The on shore activities are interesting, cultural and diverse. They even include many shopping opportunities. The walking tours are generally paced to accommodate those with mobility challenges. We thoroughly enjoyed the pre and post cruise visits to Amsterdam and Prague. The hotel in Amsterdam was fantastic with a sensational room view of the Harbour. After brief overview tours you are left on your own to tour and travel by public transportation. Read Less

We went on our own to Budapest for a week before the cruise, although we booked our flights through Viking. I think we paid $100 each as a deviation fee and we had to get to our hotel on our own, but that was no problem. We stayed at the Marriott as that's one of the hotels they use and the views were fantastic. We booked a concierge level room and were very happy with the use of the lounge. We loved Budapest and can't wait to go back on our own. The waters were low when we were there and we had to change ships in Passau, Germany, but we think that Viking handled it as well as they could have. We started out on a different ship in Budapest. We were very pleased with the itinerary. Our guides were all knowledgeable. The food was very good and we appreciated the wine and beer included with lunch and dinner. The wines frequently reflected the area we were traveling through. We were in Cabin 227 with a veranda. The room was small, but it was comfortable. The ship itself was lovely, very modern and bright. Both ships were longships and identical. Except for the painting on our wall, I wouldn't have known we had changed ships. The weather was very hot, close to 100 degrees many days, which made some of the excursions difficult. Since we had been to some of the ports before, we stayed on the ship some days and actually enjoyed the relaxation. Depending on which country we were in, entertainment from the local area was provided, and it was uniformly good. The cruise was a great choice for an anniversary celebration. We wouldn't hesitate to take another Viking River Cruise. We are scheduled for one of their new Viking Ocean Cruises to the Baltic in May, starting with a pre-cruise excursion to Iceland and ending with a post-cruise excursion in Oslo. Read Less

This is our 2nd cruise with Viking. Our 1st cruise was in Russia in July 2014, which we loved immensely. No wonder, we booked our 2nd trip with Viking. We loved the itinerary, the land excursions, the food, the hospitality. Howver, there were certain pitfalls: in our 2nd day in Buda, we were horrified to return to our meeting point to see the bus was leaving. Our local guide did not do a head count. We list our way, trying to take a short cut and was 5 mins late! This has never ever happened to us! We had to take a taxi back yo the boat! We were never told that the bus cannot wait! The ship was Ingvi. We sailed along the Danube, Main and Rhine into Amsterdam. In Vienna, in the tour of Schonnbrunn Palace, the Guide told a time to meet in front of the ticket gate. Thank god I was listening in the quiet box. He started the tour 5 mins early. We had to run to meet him. That was done again, without doing a headcount to make sure everyone was present. In Passau, we were informed of the low water level in Danube and had to change ship in Regensburg and boarded Alsvin. I hate to say: but the food and service was much better! In Ingvi: there was a limited choice of dinner for my wife. she is not fond of Steak, veal, pork or salmon! Unfortunately, the fish she took smelled a little. She was unable to eat her main meal. Same thing happened in Russia River cruise, the waiter was very nice and got something which she was able to eat. We were shocked to hear from the waiter that " He cannot do anything. Have some dessert". We thought that was most inconsiderate and unprofessional! That was the waiter in Ingvi. In contrast, the waiters and waitresses in Alsvin were nicer, friendlier and more courteous! Read Less

my wife and I wanted to celebrate this special anniversary in a grand fashion. Viking River a Cruises Grand European Tour looked to be just the answer. The choice was absolutely correct. Starting with a 2 day extension in Amsterdam and ending with a 3 day extension in Prague, we could have not been more pleased. INGVI is a beautiful vessel and the staff could not be better. As this was our first river cruise we were pleased with the closeness achieved with other passengers and the crew. Christine Couper was fantastic as Program Director. She maintained the programs regardless of the problems which materialized. Every crew member demonstrated such positive attitudes. There was nothing which they would not do to be sure the passenger was happy. Meals prepared under the direction of Denes Sookey were amazing. Michael Logtenberg the hotel manager was involved in everything necessary to keep things running smoothly, even to the point that one day I saw him loading supply's on board. You might see that I was impressed with the crew. As a manager for many years I know how important motivated personnel are. It is clear that Viking recognizes and accomplishes that result. I was also impressed with the high quality of the shore tour programs. Tour guides were professionals knowledgable of the venue and it's history. They related this to the passengers in a manner which was educational, personal, and with personality. Thanks to all for making this a trip to remember. Read Less

Loved excursions and just the nights sitting on our balcony enjoying the scenery on the river. Highly recommend to all if you haven't river cruised do and do it with Viking you won't be disappointed. Most enjoyed the daily excursions well laid out with great guides. On board entertainment was fun and culturally awakening. Loved on board lectures and pre-port briefings, very informative and entertaining. Ship was beautiful and very new, just at one year old. Service was beyond compare from front to back. Yeah Viking.
