This trip was for our anniversary that we were not sure we would make as my husband has cancer. This was also our first River Cruises. We so happy with not only the service and the accommodation but more than anything the Crew. The Program Director Candi and her team were fantastic everything from the organization of the excursion to the entertainment. The shore excursions, we great and the knowledge that was shared by the local guides was so helpful in understanding the local culture. The entertainment on board was also perfect. This was truly a trip of a lifetime. They truly made us feel welcome and like were part of the family. We are already thinking about another trip, I can only hope that it will be just as wonderful. Thank you, Viking, for a wonderful vacation. Thank you again for a wonderful trip and we hope to see you again. Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise. In October 2017, we went on our first Viking River Cruise on the Danube River. The Rhine River cruise was as just as enjoyable as our first one. We started our cruise in Basel , Switzerland and finished in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The tours were wonderful and the food, service, and accommodations on Viking Hlin. We were scheduled to cruise on Viking Kara, but switched to Viking Hlin because the water level on the Rhine River was low because of the summer draught in Western Europe. We were very pleased with the way Viking runs their river cruise and enjoyed every minute of it. The food and accommodations on Viking Hlin were wonderful. The entertainment on the ship was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Despite the low water levels, we were able to do our entire cruise itinerary and visit all the stops that were on the original river cruise schedule. Our only complaint was that it ended far too quickly. Read Less

We plan to come again year after year. The destinations were amazing! The food and service is first class, truly 5 star! We will definitely travel the world with Viking, thanks again for everything! I just can’t write enough good words and praise for Captain Tomasz Danelski & his crew. Our trip was made incredibly memorable by Hotel Manager Alexandra Woods, Master Chef Nuno Maia (World renowned), Director Daniela Ebert, Maitre D’ Marci Jasinski, Bartender Extraordinaire Goska Kurowska! Also cannot ever forget The Legendary Dominika Lipska, Caramfil Florin Andrei and of course Rumen the Musician! These people are doing such a great job and I really hope to see them again on our next epic adventure! Read Less

We've always wanted to see the areas included in the Rhine River Cruise. We were not disappointed because everything was beautiful. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated all week and were able to spend one lovely afternoon up on the deck as the ship slowly passed by many, many hillside castles. The food was delicious and the staff were fun & friendly. Unfortunately my husband was having some health issues prior to this vacation and Viking provided exceptional accommodations for anyone with "special needs." We never missed out on anything that the other tours saw but we were able to walk around at a slower pace, take ramps & elevators when others used stairs, and even had mini-vans transport us to bus locations when others had to walk there. We were certainly impressed and would highly recommend Viking cruises (we've done their river & ocean itineraries and absolutely loved all of them). Read Less

After cruising the Seine two years ago, we decided to make the Rhine our next cruise. Viking never disappoints. From the moment you step off your flight ( with Viking having great airline prices too) from the time you leave, every staff member makes you feel at home. We loved every port and excursion. We added a dinner in Rudesheim excursion and it was just what we wanted to be a part of. It was a fun night in a small German town with lots of music, authentic food and drink. I was not in my best walking form so the day I chose not to leave the ship was still enjoyable. The staff made sure I was comfortable, and well fed as well. We extended our stay in Lucerne. If you can, take the Pearls of Switzerland excursion. It was a day packed with fun and adventure ending with a wonderful fondue dinner. We are looking at the Danube next as well as taking a Viking ocean cruise We will not look at other riverboats as Viking has it all for us. Read Less

We had heard so many wonderful things about Viking cruises - the ships, the tours, the food. It was all true; we had a fabulous trip. We took excursions to Basel and Amsterdam, which were both terrific cities. We also traveled by train to Lucerne while in Basel, and had a delightful lunch by the water there. Our cabin was beautiful and comfortable, the service for the room and dining was exceptional. All of the tours were well done and interesting, and we enjoyed exploring on our own as well. There was plenty of time for this, which we appreciated. The entertainment on board was lots of fun, and our activities director and all the staff were friendly and fun. We traveled with two other couples and had a fantastic vacation together. We are going on another Viking cruise in July 2018, and hope to take more in the future. Read Less

The dinning is relax and free form. The tours offered on the ship were first class. I have take other tours in Europe and have had guides with PhD conduct tours. The guides that Viking provided were just as skilled as any I have had before. My children played the board game Trival pursuit, the version on the Hlin is from England, is a little hard to follow. I think you should get an American version of the game. Armin Hermann is very warm and engaging. He sat and talked with me several times. My adult children were on the trip with me and my wife. I was concerned that they might be bored, but they had a great time also. Read Less

My friend and I chose this cruise because it was a dream we had always had. When the price dropped so low and included air, we jumped on it. Viking couldn't have been more wonderful to us. The pace was perfect and allowed us to relax as well as participate in excursions. We met lovely people with similar interests and have maintained contact with them. The atmosphere of the ship and services offered made me feel like I was on an expensive luxury cruise rather than being in the cheapest cabin available. After we got on board, I forgot all the hassle we had on the trip over. The Paris airport was a nightmare. We arrived with enough time to transfer to Basel but the red tape and disorganization made us miss our flight. We spent the entire day in the airport and missed seeing Basel. I believe that Viking should take this process into consideration and allow more time to get through Paris. Other than that, I would take another cruise with Viking in a New York minute. Read Less

We have seen VIking Cruises advertised for years and have had it as a goal since our last European vacation 5 years ago. Although it seemed like such an expensive extravagance, since cruising we realize what an exceptional value it is. We were offered free airfare and that convinced us to do it. And we are so happy we did! We went to Amsterdam on our own 2 days ahead of the cruise. It was tempting to let Viking handle it, but I'm glad we did it on our own, because it was much more inexpensive that way. Finding our way to our hotel from the airport was very simple and inexpensive by taking the train. We did have to pay a $100 pp diversion fee, but still felt we made the best choice. Our first day on the boat we were able to join in the walking tour of Amsterdam. From the moment we dropped our luggage near the port, we were treated like royalty. I can't say enough about the service! And we felt special because they took the trouble to remember our names and greet us whenever they saw us. I have to recognize Krista, Alex, Ivan, Jimmie, Rudy and Arias, Exceptional service! The rooms were comfortable. We chose a lower deck room because we didn't feel it was important to have a balcony and we really didn't miss it. They have done everything to make the small space as comfortable as possible. There was plenty of storage space. The food was fabulous with plenty of choices since there is an "always available" menu with a few choices. We only went to it once, choosing the steak which was very good. The included wines were good, but did not vary the entire week. They offered a Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec. I don't know if there was more than one beer on offer or not, but when we did have it, it was the same. I don't remember the nameof it. We did not choose the silver package because we don't drink liquor, but most of the people we hung out with did, and they seemed to think it was worth it. The drink prices are reasonable. You have the option to add the silver package up to the second day of the cruise. We chose the dining room for every meal. There was much more on offer and we could still eat light if we chose to. Candi, our cruise director did a wonderful job and was always informative, patient and and jovial. We did not do any of the optional excursions. We felt the included excursions and then exploring on our own the rest of the time was a perfect mix. We enjoyed all of the included excursions. There was a singer, pianist most nights. Although it was clear English wasn't Gigi's first language, he did a good job and the crowd joined in with him and enjoyed his entertainment. There was another pair playing classical one night, but it wasn't our thing, so we went to the top deck, since we were going rough the locks that evening ( that in itself is an event worth seeing. We went through many locks but most of them were while we were sleeping.). Another afternoon, there was a speaker, but we missed it because we went in to explore the town. We would love to take another Viking Cruise. We couldn't give t a better recommendation! Read Less

The cruise director (Daniel) was one of the highlights of the cruise. He was funny and engaging and always so helpful with any problem we might have. He should get a raise. The level of service was absolutely wonderful. And the side trips were both educational and fun. Loved the day we toured the windmills, and the castles and cathedrals we saw were spectacular. Another side trip we loved was a day trip through the Black Forest. Absolutely beautiful, and the guides we had were so knowledgeable. We were more than satisfied with the ship, the food, the service and the wonderful excursions. We're going on another Viking river cruise next summer. This time down the Rhone river. Can hardly wait! We decided on a Viking River boat cruise for our honeymoon. Being my first cruise, I was off unaware of what to expect. Yet, my husband had been on a few previously and only heard amazing things via his colleagues and or friends. It was one of the best decision we made, as the entire experience was extremely enjoyable! What made it such, was the crew of the Hlin. Candi, was superb in every aspect. She made each transition, every port, every excursion, amazingly smooth and simple! Michael, the hotel manager, made our stay effortlessly. So many amazing members of the crew on the Hlin, I could not name just a single person as they all made our experience wonderful! Not to mention, everyone was also extremely courteous. If you are at all thinking of booking a river boat cruise, Viking is the only way to go! The entire experience was about the countries and the culture. So, by far the best option! Read Less

We took the Viking Delling cruise on the Danube (Nuremberg to Budapest) in July, 2014 and loved every minute. We were so impressed we decided to take the Rhine cruise last month. Where the food on the Delling was always excellent and regional dishes were featured, the meals on the Hlin were disappointingly repetitious, with generally over-cooked meat. It was especially bad on Friday, when the "special German dishes" of weiner schnitzel and sauerbraten were both so over-cooked and tough, they were just plain awful. On another evening , ahi tuna was cooked till it was uniformly gray. Entertainment on the Delling was, as we remember, very enjoyable, with a good deal of diversity. The piano player on the Hlin, while (I'm sure) a fine musician, may have modeled his performance on Bill Murray's "Nick the Lounge Singer" bit on SNL. Flourishes abounded, making every tune sound like every other. We did not "hang out" to listen to him. The shore excursions were fairly enjoyable, particularly the tours of Amsterdam, the Kinderdijk Windmill, Marksburg Castle, Cologne, Strasbourg and Colmar. However, the Heidelberg Castle tour was a total waste of time, our guide was not good, and the town is merely one very long street of nothing-noteworthy shops, in which we had no interest. The excursion to the Black Forest, while picturesque, was mostly geared to trying to encourage us tourists to buy cuckoo clocks. The demonstration on making them was so crowded, we couldn't see or hear. Finally, I think it would have been nice to be given some information about Basel, rather than being just left on our own, since the Tinguely Museum was closed on Monday when we tried to go. We wanted to experience a river cruise along the Rhine River and to see all the interesting cities along the way. We were not disappointed; the views and shore excursions were spectacular! We did a 2 day pre-cruise in Amsterdam and a 2 day post cruise in Lucerne. Amsterdam is definitely the city of bicycles and Lucerne had spectacular views of the Alps. Viking personnel gave us a very informative walking tour of Amsterdam and Lucerne. The information provided gave us the opportunity to go out on our own and tour the cities at our leisure. In Amsterdam, we did a canal cruise, visited the Van Gogh and Rijks museums and even had a tour of the infamous "Red Light District". In Lucerne, we visited the glacier museum and took a gondola ride to the top of Mt Stanserhorn (what a view from the top!). Our cruise along the Rhine was historically very interesting (castles, century old cities, WWII memorials). All the Viking shore excursions were well planned and organized. When arriving back at the boat, the executive chef would give us a special drink or snack as we walked on board. We had access to the crew (including the captain) if we ever a question, comment or concern. The boat and our cabin were keep clean and neat at all times. The food and drinks were excellent. Although there was no "formal" entertainment, Viking provided special "events" that were truly entertaining and relaxing. Read Less

It was my first cruise and it stopped in several cities I wanted to visit. The guides were local and very informative and entertaining. Humor was intertspersed and even music and singing. The bus driver was amazing! So many narrow streets we were holding our breath at times! He was always outside when we arrived lending a helping hand out of the bus. Embarkation and disembarking went smoothly. This is why I wanted to go on a river rather than ocean cruise, which to me is a floating city. I had time while waiting for my friends to arrive and waited in the bar with a glass of champagne. This was my retirement gifdt to myself. The food was excellent and such a variety. Every meal was 5-star. The wines selected were perfect. Service was exceptional. The ship itself was clean and the various areas were nicely decorated. I have scheduled my next cruise for the first week in November 2018 on the Danube and can't wait! Read Less

We have sailed with Viking previously (Christmas Markets of the Danube) 3 years ago, and in fact, on the same ship. The ship hasn't changed, but the crew, and attitudes, has. This trip we opted for deck one (cabin 110) and the cabins are just fine....typical for a river cruise ship, with the usual space constraints. The crew was very good (Arturo, the Concierge) said we would remember him...a true statement. The rest of the crew and staff went out of their way to assist my wife when she had to return to the ship due to medical reasons. (The ship was to drop us off, immediately sail on, and remeet later.) All of that was good. One problem was the itinerary...it just did not take full advantage of the Rhine River. Our stop in Kobletz is a prime example. We docked at the base of the cable car to the castle, just a few meters from the statue area at the conflux of the Rhine and Mozelle Rivers. Absolutely no time was allocated to be able to go into the town, or to explore the monuments. The group going on the included castle tour grabbed their bus and took off. Those remaining going to the alternate (extra cost) castle headed to the cable cars, hand went up on their tour. The ship, in the meantime, headed up river, to dock near where the first group would end up. After the second group finished their castle tour, we all boarded buses and went to where the ship was waiting. Food was not as good this trip, and there were some nights the "always available" menu was needed. Entertainment was very good, as brought aboard. However, why, in Germany, was there no "oom-pa-pa" band? Will we sail again with Viking? Yes. They do care, but they need to do some refresher courses. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we were going to a wedding in Germany and we elected to cruise the Rhine prior to the wedding. We has wanted to go on a river cruise as we had seen the Viking advertisement and I found the advertisement to accurately describe what we experienced. Every day we were in an interesting port and had great guides. When we were on the boat we had great food and enjoyed the company of many interesting people. We liked this cruise so much we went on another Viking cruise on the Danube in December. The second cruise was just as good as the first one. The beauty of the Christmas Markets and the less crowded tourist locations made the cold seem just fine. We would definitely consider another cruise. We made new friends on both of our cruises and have kept in contact after the cruise. We are very impressed with the quality of Viking and would book again at some time in the future. Read Less

It was nice to have a choice of where to eat. We had dinners up on the atrium deck and could get smaller portions. The 2 evening performances were a nice addition and very enjoyable. All the tour guides were well informed and the ear phones made the tours much much better. The only disappointing experience was at the beginning in Amsterdam. We couldn,t find our Viking greeter and if we hadn't met another Viking passenger we would still be wandering the airport. Then when we found our meeting point no one would listen to the fact that we were doing a extended stay. When we got to the hotel there was no viking person to greet us we were just told at the desk that the Viking office was around the corner. We ended up doing Amsterdam on our own with a guidebook . When we finally met the Viking person in Amsterdam the word useless comes to mind. We have now done 5 Viking trips and all were very well organized until Amsterdam. Our cabin suite was a bit pricy and booked at the last minute. However, I was given a discounted rate by my travel agent. I enjoyed everything that we got from Viking, from the moment we stepped in the Hlin Viking Longship. The staff who met us at the airport and the staff on board were very friendly and accommodating. The food was mostly great served by the friendly staff. Our room was always kept fresh and clean. The daily excursion was very informative and well planned. Traveled from Basil to Amsterdam, via Rhine. Unfortunately, the river was to shallow to pass and we were moved to another Viking ship on the other side of low section. The transfer was done very efficiently however it did interrupt some of the sightseeing. Accommodations and onboard service and facilities was very good, however the vacuum waste system over our stateroom, aboard ship, was noisy. Our travel director was extremely friendly and helpful, as were the local guides. Regarding ships, we started on the Hlin and were transferred to the Kara. We preferred the Hlin staff over the Kara. Excursions were often slow due to the elderly (we are in our 60's and many could not match pace) so one must be patient and understanding. One elderly gentleman complained as I removed my jacket while traveling on a coach to an excursion, another made negative comments regarding drinking a beer, while sailing past various Castles in Germany one late morning, then once they realized the Beer was free, then it was okay and they ordered for themselves... Love river cruising. Everything was convenient. The service was good and always helpful. We like the small ship and less walking for activities. The scenic views of the landscape were breathtaking. We had a illness while on board and the director helped with finding a emergency room and accompanied the sick passenger to the doctor. We enjoy meeting all the guests and after a few days knowing most of the people we travel with. We will definitely take another river cruise. Our cabin was neat and tidy and we were never rushed out for cleaning. The ship was beautiful and we enjoyed the view from the front with the serving area for food. This was new to us from previous cruises. I thought the food was delicious and never had any thing I didn't like. The entertainment was okay. Sometimes better than other times. However, our director was just delightful. She always brightened up the evening no matter what. Our excursions were perfect with the built in hearing device. I really like that and find it makes our experience more complete. The only complaint I would have is the first day on arrival we walked the city of Basel and it was too taxing. After the long flight I should have rested and then later left ship. When returning our flights were scheduled to Minneapolis and then to Dallas. They timing was too close. We missed the Dallas flight because of customs and security lines were too long. We only had about an hour and 15 minutes to make it. The airport was so big we had to ride to the Dallas connection but missed the flight by about 5 minutes. Had to stay in Minneapolis over night. This was a bucket-list cruise for me and I was not disappointed. We left for Amsterdam early and had two full days to spend there. We were amazed at the number of bicycles there (600,000) which made walking an adventure. We then boarded our ship, the Viking Hlin, and were personally escorted to our stateroom, which was very adequate regarding space and appointments. The best part was the spacious shower and bathroom area. The ship itself had a small library and computer area with Wi-Fi. I was born to eat and found the breakfast/lunch buffet to be excellent. The choices were well presented and very tasty. The scrambled eggs were the absolute best I have ever eaten ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As for dinner, the choices were less than on an ocean cruise, but WAY BETTER. Very gourmet! The best part was there were only 184 passengers, compared to thousands on an ocean cruise. Having fewer guests and no loud music, made for a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. With no huge stage productions, the entertainment was another surprise....consisting of local talent from the various ports. I won't tell you about it, but you will be pleasantly surprised. Very classy! Regarding port and shore excursions, there was a tour of each city visited. Be prepared to walk! I walk with a cane, but found two walking sticks to be my salvation. We were broken into three groups, with the third being the "leisure" group. Some of the tours included a motor coach and one had a taxi. Regarding the crew, we found them to be more than eager to assist and make our time onboard pleasant. I would have to say that my favorite part of the trip was cruising down the middle Rhine and seeing all of the castles. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day to view them from the top deck. With all things considered, this (our first River cruise) was our absolute favorite cruise ever out of a total of eighteen. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, but not to worry. We left the ship in Basel and spent an extra two full days in Lucerne. It is a beautiful city, but very expensive. Would I do another Viking River Cruise? In a heartbeat. Well done VIKING! Read Less

On April 7, 2015 we were a family of 8 from Hawaii that boarded the HLIN in Amsterdam for a Rhine River Cruise ending in Basel. I want to say the experience for all of us was OUTSTANDING, the boat was incredible, clean, well organized, and having been in the hotel industry most of my life, I'm 73, must say the staff was absolutely outstanding!! They were professional, helpful, friendly, sincerely looked out for us and connected with us from the moment we came on board. The food was excellent and the Chef from the Philippines prepared us a special meal which was outstanding! One young lady who was our server for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was Cherielyn, she took care of the 8 of us each meal, each day for the whole trip and works in the main dining room and her warmness, personality and professionalism was an added bonus to our having a wonderful trip. The staff and management of the HLIN Boat was so well organized, always ready to help, and always had a sincere smile on their faces. The tours, the boat, the food, the staff, from the Captain to the deck hands were incredible!! I couldn't and can't think of anything that Viking could have done to make our trip better, it was perfect!! This was our first river cruise and from all of us, it will not be our last with Viking River Cruises.” Read Less
