We plan to come again year after year. The destinations were amazing! The food and service is first class, truly 5 star! We will definitely travel the world with Viking, thanks again for everything! I just can’t write enough good words and praise for Captain Tomasz Danelski & his crew. Our trip was made incredibly memorable by Hotel Manager Alexandra Woods, Master Chef Nuno Maia (World renowned), Director Daniela Ebert, Maitre D’ Marci Jasinski, Bartender Extraordinaire Goska Kurowska! Also cannot ever forget The Legendary Dominika Lipska, Caramfil Florin Andrei and of course Rumen the Musician! Viking as a cruise company once again provided a terrific cruise ship and staff. This was our second Viking river cruise and everything about this company and its employees is top shelf. But I didn’t like the itinerary on this cruise as well as our initial cruise, which was southern France. This cruise up the Rhine was just not as interesting and the cities were not as picturesque. You can’t go wrong picking Viking as your river cruise company. But make sure you’ll enjoy the stops on your cruise before you book it. The southern France cruise ended up docked in a new city every morning with easy access right off the boat directly into the new city. The Rhine cruise in contrast often involved cruising during the day and docking in places where a bus trip was necessary to get to the city center. Again the cities visited were just not as interesting and there was too much down time cruising during the day. Read Less

We chose the Rhine River cruise because we had friends that took it and they said it was Fantastic ! Our Fiftieth Anniversary was coming up and we decided to see for ourselves. What our friends told us did not come close to describing what an absolutely Spectacular experience Viking provides. From the moment we arrived at the ship, to the (unfortunate) moment that we had to leave, everything was perfect. Our cabin was immaculate upon our arrival and was maintained that way for the entire trip. My wife has a very strict special diet and the chef came to our table the first night to discuss it with her & almost every night thereafter to make sure that he was meeting her needs. If you have some special dietary needs? Have no fear ! Viking can & will accommodate! The shore excursions are so well managed & organized that you would have to really work hard to get lost, due to the wonderful tour guides (all English speaking) that are easy to follow & extremely informative. All I can say is "THANK-YOU VIKING" for a Cruise of a life time. We are now in the planning stages for our next Viking River Cruise! Read Less

Loved Basel and our extra time there and in Amsterdam! Loved seeing the sights along the river.Enjoyed the museums and tours. The tours were great and we enjoyed meeting people on the cruise. There is plenty of time to relax, read, and enjoy the lounge. The service was excellent and staff was friendly. All meals were delicious and there were plenty of choices to accommodate all diets and allergies. The ratio of staff to passengers is amazing and all staff seemed to enjoy the chance to make our trip a special one. The "extra" tours were worth the money. Would recommend that people wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for walking on the cobblestones! Don't underestimate the toll on your feet! It was lots warmer than we thought when packing so think "layers" when you pack! This was our second river cruise with Viking and we will go again! Maybe France next time! Read Less

We had heard so many wonderful things about Viking cruises - the ships, the tours, the food. It was all true; we had a fabulous trip. We took excursions to Basel and Amsterdam, which were both terrific cities. We also traveled by train to Lucerne while in Basel, and had a delightful lunch by the water there. Our cabin was beautiful and comfortable, the service for the room and dining was exceptional. All of the tours were well done and interesting, and we enjoyed exploring on our own as well. There was plenty of time for this, which we appreciated. The entertainment on board was lots of fun, and our activities director and all the staff were friendly and fun. We traveled with two other couples and had a fantastic vacation together. We are going on another Viking cruise in July 2018, and hope to take more in the future. Read Less

I can't say enough good things our Viking cruise. We had a veranda cabin and it was very spacious. The veranda was not really needed in November but it gave us great view of the locks. From the moment you get off the plane, Viking takes care of you. The included tours in each port are more than enough to get to know the ports. We took several optional tours and would highly recommend the beer culture of cologne tour! Also the medival city of Colmar was fascinating and had time for shopping. The dining room staff were all very friendly. There is no assigned seating so you can meet new people at every meal. There were terrific soups every day. That was great after those cold days touring Germany and France. Entertainment was good in the lounge and drink prices are reasonable. This is not really a party ship as you are getting up early to tour. Overall, I highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We have seen VIking Cruises advertised for years and have had it as a goal since our last European vacation 5 years ago. Although it seemed like such an expensive extravagance, since cruising we realize what an exceptional value it is. We were offered free airfare and that convinced us to do it. And we are so happy we did! We went to Amsterdam on our own 2 days ahead of the cruise. It was tempting to let Viking handle it, but I'm glad we did it on our own, because it was much more inexpensive that way. Finding our way to our hotel from the airport was very simple and inexpensive by taking the train. We did have to pay a $100 pp diversion fee, but still felt we made the best choice. Our first day on the boat we were able to join in the walking tour of Amsterdam. From the moment we dropped our luggage near the port, we were treated like royalty. I can't say enough about the service! And we felt special because they took the trouble to remember our names and greet us whenever they saw us. I have to recognize Krista, Alex, Ivan, Jimmie, Rudy and Arias, Exceptional service! The rooms were comfortable. We chose a lower deck room because we didn't feel it was important to have a balcony and we really didn't miss it. They have done everything to make the small space as comfortable as possible. There was plenty of storage space. The food was fabulous with plenty of choices since there is an "always available" menu with a few choices. We only went to it once, choosing the steak which was very good. The included wines were good, but did not vary the entire week. They offered a Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec. I don't know if there was more than one beer on offer or not, but when we did have it, it was the same. I don't remember the nameof it. We did not choose the silver package because we don't drink liquor, but most of the people we hung out with did, and they seemed to think it was worth it. The drink prices are reasonable. You have the option to add the silver package up to the second day of the cruise. We chose the dining room for every meal. There was much more on offer and we could still eat light if we chose to. Candi, our cruise director did a wonderful job and was always informative, patient and and jovial. We did not do any of the optional excursions. We felt the included excursions and then exploring on our own the rest of the time was a perfect mix. We enjoyed all of the included excursions. There was a singer, pianist most nights. Although it was clear English wasn't Gigi's first language, he did a good job and the crowd joined in with him and enjoyed his entertainment. There was another pair playing classical one night, but it wasn't our thing, so we went to the top deck, since we were going rough the locks that evening ( that in itself is an event worth seeing. We went through many locks but most of them were while we were sleeping.). Another afternoon, there was a speaker, but we missed it because we went in to explore the town. We would love to take another Viking Cruise. We couldn't give t a better recommendation! Read Less

Since having been on several ocean cruises, we looked forward to making our 30th wedding anniversary extra special by trying river cruise, with Viking was our first choice - and the correct one! From arriving at Basel to leaving Amsterdam, there was literally NO detail overlooked and not expertly executed. The embarkation and disembarkation process was handled seamlessly with immediate access to our hotel and stateroom. The included and optional excursions we enjoyed were staffed with expert local guides that provided rich history and unique perspectives to the cities and sites we visited. We hope to go back to many of them on future vacations. Our dining experience was 5 Star with a delicious assortment of food choices and impeccable service. We decided on a Viking River boat cruise for our honeymoon. Being my first cruise, I was off unaware of what to expect. Yet, my husband had been on a few previously and only heard amazing things via his colleagues and or friends. It was one of the best decision we made, as the entire experience was extremely enjoyable! What made it such, was the crew of the Hlin. Candi, was superb in every aspect. She made each transition, every port, every excursion, amazingly smooth and simple! Michael, the hotel manager, made our stay effortlessly. So many amazing members of the crew on the Hlin, I could not name just a single person as they all made our experience wonderful! Not to mention, everyone was also extremely courteous. If you are at all thinking of booking a river boat cruise, Viking is the only way to go! The entire experience was about the countries and the culture. So, by far the best option! Read Less

Fantastic trip. We had seen the ads on Public Broadcasting for years and always talked about doing one. 45th Wedding Anniversary made a great excuse. Viking handled everything smoothly and professionally. The crew went out of their way to make us feel at home. Having the Captain being a former submariner (I'm a retired submarine CO) was special and his eagerness to show me his ship was great. The tours were great. Having a local actually lead the excursions gives you a much more in-depth understanding of the city and people. The tour of Strasbourg was a particular highlight specifically because the guide, a young college student, was so knowledgeable and entertaining. The cabin was very comfortable and the veranda stateroom was perfect for relaxing while watching the river roll by. The meals were excellent and a great way to make new friends. Count on us being back for another adventure soon. Read Less

The Bartenders Ivan and Krista greeted you every evening they were amazing they knew each guest well remembered what everyone wanted to drink. For a trip of a lifetime it was far beyond anything we could have expected. The boat...amazing. No sway, very luxurious. The roooms were bigger than we thought they would be. And we had a room next to our friends so sitting out on our veranda at nite was great. The food, WOW. I've eaten at alot of high end restaurants and the food on the ship was the best I've ever had, every night surprisingly it got better, even though I thought the food was the best I've ever tasted that nite. Thanks Chef Bobby. The staff was incredible. We mostly had Adrian and Krista look after us and they spoiled us rotten, we didn't want to leave the ship. the excursions were out of this world, I had black forest cake in the black forest WOOO! Just the history you experience makes you feel like your in a great dream that you don't want to end. We started out with four people in our group and by the end we had 17 people with us for dinner each nite. Great bunch of people. Gigi the lounge pianist was incredible. We interacted with him every nite and he took requests and even learned a song for someone in our group. We love you Gigi. He had as must fun as we did. We talked to just about everyone on the ship asking them where they were from and about their lives. Incredible bunch of people. I think they liked us too because one nite the Chef and the Captain came out and partied and danced with us in the lounge to the amazement of the servers haha. It was like one big happy bunch of friends, our gang and the crew. We booked our flight through Viking so we had everything taken care of from the time we landed until the time we left. We didn't have to worry about anything they had it all under control. What a load off that is. We got the silver package which lets you choose spirits, wine and beer off a high end list of alcohols. They give you wine or beer with lunch and dinner but you get a separate upscale menu for drinks if you have the silver package. That made our trip as well, because it let you try some of the finer alcohol with the food you were eating, and Krista was very knowledgeable about pairings and would recommend us to try this or that with certain foods. It ups the quality of your meals 10 fold and you have the added bonus of not having to sing for anything. Once we said we had the silver package Krista said she would take care of what ever we needed. And she did. Ivan the bartender was also amazing. We wanted to have mamosas on our balcony while cruising the Rhine at night and Ivan put a bottle of champagne, a bottle of orange juice and 4 glasses for us and our friends and walked it to our room for us. The excursions were so organized and timed our perfectly with one exception at one castle. there wasn't enough time to shop afterwards so it was really rushed. Everyone made them aware of that and all the future trips should have more time. All the other excursions were relaxed and their lollipop system for hearing the guide worked really well. The bus drivers were amazing drivers, and very professional. Top notch from start to end. Even though it's an expensive trip both my wife and I felt like we got our moneys worth and more. My wife said I have to end before I write a book lol. the best ship (Hlin) the best food the best crew the best excursions = the best trip ever Thank you Viking Read Less

We chose this cruise as we were going to a wedding in Germany and we elected to cruise the Rhine prior to the wedding. We has wanted to go on a river cruise as we had seen the Viking advertisement and I found the advertisement to accurately describe what we experienced. Every day we were in an interesting port and had great guides. When we were on the boat we had great food and enjoyed the company of many interesting people. We liked this cruise so much we went on another Viking cruise on the Danube in December. The second cruise was just as good as the first one. The beauty of the Christmas Markets and the less crowded tourist locations made the cold seem just fine. We would definitely consider another cruise. We made new friends on both of our cruises and have kept in contact after the cruise. We are very impressed with the quality of Viking and would book again at some time in the future. Read Less

The personel aboard was very welcoming, polite and friendly, the food excellent as well as the wine offered at meal time. We enjoyed the ship and cabin which were kept very clean. All public areas were well kept. Shore excursions, included and others, were well organized and guides were excellent. We chose Viking for 2 reasons...firstly TV advertising..2ndly ...they offerred an exceptional package which included flights vs their competitors. Even though timing did not work for us and we changed carriers pricing was still less than offerred by comprtitors so booking through Viking was a real PLUS! We spent 3 days prior to the cruise in Amsterdam. Vikings staff were great in providing tips when we were on our own and the city tour they provided was very enjoyable. We stayed at the Hilton on a canal close to public transportation and downtown. Hotel staff from all the concierges to management could not do enough to make our stay comfortable. There were several cafes/restaurants and shops in close proximity and while the Hilton restaureant was very good it was nice to have lots of choice. Staff on HLIN are top notch! The ship manager (Jan) was wonderful with all the passengers; our Cruise Director held daily meetings to fill us in on the following days' activities; local information and other info she thought was beneficial. We were particularly impressed that she and her staff looked after the needs of those who may have been physically challenged...booking special transportation etc. The dining staff were wonderful....and genuinely interested in meetin your every need. will we travel agin with VIKING???YOU BET we will! We met very interesting folks on this cruise from other parts of the US, shared our views with them and we appreciated their views. Dinner time was often the most interesting. The entertainment while overnighting near Strasbourg was charming. This was a busy cruise, with tours daily and some of the excursions were a bit demanding But if one did not take the tours, how could you see the country? The cruse was great. We arrived in Amsterdam very early in the morning as we had an overnight flight. Our Viking Cruise host met us while we were waiting for our luggage to come off the plane. We were then shuttled to our ship aboard a coach bus and given cold water immediately. It was a nice way to start. When we arrived at our ship, the staterooms weren't ready yet but we were encouraged to go to the dining room and enjoy a hot breakfast as service was still ongoing. Another fantastic way to start our trip. We did take advantage of the shuttle bus that took us to the center of Amsterdam so we could explore a bit. Unfortunately many of the museums were closed and the Anne Frank house was completely sold out but we took a wonderful canal cruise and saw many of the sights. The weather was a bit chillier than I thought it would be at that time of the year so we didn't spend any time on the sundeck but the Aquavita Terrace was wonderful! And on the one day that we were hit by rain while on an excursion, the ship's kitchen staff met us with hot chocolate and rum! YUMMY!!! The food was excellent! I loved that we had the choice of either a more 'informal' meal on the terrace or a more formal meal in the dining room for lunch and dinner. Even for breakfast there were many many choices from the to die for buffet to the order from the menu options. If you just wanted muffins, coffee, and cereal there were those options also! The bar staff was extremely friendly!! My husband and I looked forward to going to the lounge whenever possible because it was so welcoming! Ships staff weren't afraid to interact with us and it made it seem like we were cruising with family. Our cabin steward was fantastic! He entertained us with towel animals and fresh fruit each day! The ports are wonderful and the shore excursions are very interesting but bring your walking shoes!!! Walk before you go on the trip to get ready for the walking you will do. Many areas are accessible only on foot and sometimes the ship has to dock a decent hike from the main entrance to town. You will definitely get your exercise! We did extend our trip into Lucern Switzerland and I can't say that I would recommend that portion of the trip. Our hotel was again a distance from the city center and having to walk for everything was not the way I really wanted to end my trip. But my husband and I are looking forward to going on another excursion with Viking. We just know what we want to do more than we did for the first trip. Read Less

This trip was recommended by friends, actural experience turned out to be excellent and memorable for my wife and I. We are now recommending Viking river curises to our friends for both quality and value for money. We were particularly impressed with the shore excrusion trips. All were well-organized and led by experience and caring guides. Tour buses appears to be dedicated to Viking lines, they were clean; comfortable and with safe drivers. The shore excrusions was a pleansant surprise (and a job well done) on top of the "river crusing" experience. Daily activity sheet and visiting fact sheets were easy to follow and comprehend. On-board dinnings included sufficient culture varieties and themes; all were well prepared and served. Staff were friendly; personable; happy and patient. Some improvement feedbacks: 1. The cabine hallways were bit narrow. 2. The weather - there were some "cold-and-rainy" spring days in early April . . . 3. Embarkation was changed last minutes, an earlier notice would be better. We look forward to our next river cruise with Viking Read Less

This was my "retirement vacation" after 33 years with the Fire Department. My wife and I saw the ads for Viking River cruises and said "why not?" My wife used to book corporate travel when she worked in the corporate world, so she handled the arrangements. We decided to spend a couple of extra days in Europe on each end of the cruise, so we did 2 extra days in Amsterdam and 2 in Basel, Switzerland. She booked the trip, and when the itinerary came in, we were a little concerned. The initial trip over, we would have flown out of Boston with a connecting flight from Keflavik, Iceland. We prefer direct flights, but this for this leg of the trip it wasn't a major concern. The return flight, however had us leaving Zurich, catching a connecting flight in Copenhagen to Keflavik and then to Boston.. it would have been total of 13 hours to get home. We inquired about getting direct flights, we got a Boston to Amesterdam flight on Delta. The return trip was from Zurich to New York/JFK with connecting flight to Boston on Delta. Our flight was nice, we arrived in Amsterdam around 7:30 their time. We were met at the airport by a Viking representative, who made sure that we and our luggage made t to the hotel. The hotel was the Raddison Blu. it was very nice and we ate at the restaurants at the hotel. We did do a hop on/hop off boat tour of Amsterdam. One of our stops was the Van Gogh Museum (my wife is a student of art history). If you take the boat tour, make sure that you get back early enough. the stop that was closest to our hotel closed. We ended up walking distance and eventually hailed a pedicab to take us back. The transit to the ship was smooth. There was still time before the ship set sail to do little exploring if one wished. We had a suite cabin, it was very nice, with a sitting room as well as a bedroom. We left Amsterdam in the evening and arrived in Kinderjik, a UNESCO heritage site. We did an excursion to the windmills. One of the things that Viking does is have a group for those with mobility issues. One gets to see the same things, the tour is at a slightly slower pace. After Kinderjik, we cruised downriver to Cologne (Köln in German) We did a walking tour in the afternoon and visited the Köln Cathedral. In the evening I did the Köln pub crawl, visiting 5 different German pubs and sampling different varieties of Kölsch beers. Next was Koblenz and Rudeshiem, where we toured the Marksburg Castle. Again we cruised down the Rhine to Heidelberg and Speyer. Speyer had a transportation museum, with many aircraft, trains, boats and vehicles. It is hard to miss a Boeing 747 in Lufthansa livery looking like it just took off! I would have loved to tour the museum, but being a self professed "airplane geek" I probably would have missed the boat! We left Speyer and headed for Strasbourg, in the Alsace Lorraine. Strasbourg is beautiful. I took a winery tour there. We made one more stop in Germany...Breisach. We took a bus to the Black Forest region. Upon the return, we set sail for Basel. Once we arrived in Basel, we disembarked, then took the bus to Lucerne. Our hotel room at the Grand Hotel Lucern was, in a word, magnificent! We spent two days in Lucerne, Taking a Lake Lucerne cruise as well as visiting the Titlis Glacier. We said goodbye to Switzerland as we drove by bus to Zurich and then home. Food: The food on the boat is awesome! Breakfast is served buffet style , with many choices. Lunch is low key, dinners are wonderful .There are usually 3 different menu choices as well as 3 "staples"... I could go on and on about our experience with Viking, but I would probably be writing the equivalent of Dostoevsky's War and Peace. If you are thinking about going on a Viking River Cruise, take my advice... DO IT! Read Less

My wife and I cruised with Viking for the second time. This time we were on Viking Hlin. The entire staff were truly fantastic - from the Captain, Hotel Manager and the rest of the crew. They were a really happy crew and that was reflected in their work and service to their guests. The food was, as usual, magnificent and we met some lovely people along the way. Viking make sure there are alternative trips for all levels of fitness and ensured that no-one missed out. If you felt you didn't enjoy this cruise, then it would have been your own fault! Read Less
