For a trip of a lifetime it was far beyond anything we could have expected. The boat...amazing. No sway, very luxurious. The roooms were bigger than we thought they would be. And we had a room next to our friends so sitting out on our veranda at nite was great. The food, WOW. I've eaten at alot of high end restaurants and the food on the ship was the best I've ever had, every night surprisingly it got better, even though I thought the food was the best I've ever tasted that nite. Thanks Chef Bobby. The staff was incredible. We mostly had Adrian and Krista look after us and they spoiled us rotten, we didn't want to leave the ship. the excursions were out of this world, I had black forest cake in the black forest WOOO! Just the history you experience makes you feel like your in a great dream that you don't want to end. We started out with four people in our group and by the end we had 17 people with us for dinner each nite. Great bunch of people. Gigi the lounge pianist was incredible. We interacted with him every nite and he took requests and even learned a song for someone in our group. We love you Gigi. He had as must fun as we did. We talked to just about everyone on the ship asking them where they were from and about their lives. Incredible bunch of people. I think they liked us too because one nite the Chef and the Captain came out and partied and danced with us in the lounge to the amazement of the servers haha. It was like one big happy bunch of friends, our gang and the crew. We booked our flight through Viking so we had everything taken care of from the time we landed until the time we left. We didn't have to worry about anything they had it all under control. What a load off that is. We got the silver package which lets you choose spirits, wine and beer off a high end list of alcohols. They give you wine or beer with lunch and dinner but you get a separate upscale menu for drinks if you have the silver package. That made our trip as well, because it let you try some of the finer alcohol with the food you were eating, and Krista was very knowledgeable about pairings and would recommend us to try this or that with certain foods. It ups the quality of your meals 10 fold and you have the added bonus of not having to sing for anything. Once we said we had the silver package Krista said she would take care of what ever we needed. And she did. Ivan the bartender was also amazing. We wanted to have mamosas on our balcony while cruising the Rhine at night and Ivan put a bottle of champagne, a bottle of orange juice and 4 glasses for us and our friends and walked it to our room for us. The excursions were so organized and timed our perfectly with one exception at one castle. there wasn't enough time to shop afterwards so it was really rushed. Everyone made them aware of that and all the future trips should have more time. All the other excursions were relaxed and their lollipop system for hearing the guide worked really well. The bus drivers were amazing drivers, and very professional. Top notch from start to end. Even though it's an expensive trip both my wife and I felt like we got our moneys worth and more. My wife said I have to end before I write a book lol. the best ship (Hlin) the best food the best crew the best excursions = the best trip ever Thank you Viking Read Less

We chose the Rhine River cruise to celebrate our 25 th anniversary after spending the previous 2 months in Italy. 4 days prior to departure I received an email stating the ship had a broken propellor and that we would be bused to Breisach the day 2 port in Germany and not from our departure port of Basel, Switzerland. We were told to report to the Basel airport to meet the buses. Thus we missed the Basel tour and cruising upriver into Germany which is what we paid for and not a bus ride. Despite it being a Viking problem this matter was never brought up again and no compensation not even a free drink was offered as an apology. The following morning breakfast was a buffet fiasco with the wait line out the door. I felt as if I was on a Canaveral cruise. To make matters worse the wait staff really didnt smile except for perhaps one or two. On our 3 rd night when we returned to our suite 316 I checked the bedsheets and to my shock I could see blood stains and urine on the mattress cover showing through my sheet! I went to reception and the person there told me housekeeping was asleep. My response was " I'm not"! She came to our suite and she was appalled by what she saw! She did wake up the housekeeping manager but they didnt have clean linen! They put blankets as a mattress pad. The following morning the room cleaning girl apologized saying she didnt see it , but you had to be blind not to see the numerous blood and urine stains on both sides of the mattress pad. They gave us the drink package as an apology but we dont really drink. The remainder of the cruise was just ok. Too much time on buses, not enough in the towns . The food on the cruise was ok (6 on a scale of 1 to 10 ) not great so we started eating upstairs in the Aquavit Terrace as our waiter Sandor was friendly and fantastic in comparison to the wait staff in the dining room that really didnt smile! One evening I asked Tony the head of Dining for one of the dishes from upstairs and he told me to get it myself! I will say that Arturo our concierge was great. He was always willing to help and service with a smile. He indeed was a pleasure to interact with. The day we were to depart the ship the steward that came to get our bags was drinking a cup of coffee that he spilled on our luggage! Totally unprofessional! I'm so disappointed with Viking! Best thing on the cruise were the new friendships we made ! Read Less

We have sailed with Viking previously (Christmas Markets of the Danube) 3 years ago, and in fact, on the same ship. The ship hasn't changed, but the crew, and attitudes, has. This trip we opted for deck one (cabin 110) and the cabins are just fine....typical for a river cruise ship, with the usual space constraints. The crew was very good (Arturo, the Concierge) said we would remember him...a true statement. The rest of the crew and staff went out of their way to assist my wife when she had to return to the ship due to medical reasons. (The ship was to drop us off, immediately sail on, and remeet later.) All of that was good. One problem was the itinerary...it just did not take full advantage of the Rhine River. Our stop in Kobletz is a prime example. We docked at the base of the cable car to the castle, just a few meters from the statue area at the conflux of the Rhine and Mozelle Rivers. Absolutely no time was allocated to be able to go into the town, or to explore the monuments. The group going on the included castle tour grabbed their bus and took off. Those remaining going to the alternate (extra cost) castle headed to the cable cars, hand went up on their tour. The ship, in the meantime, headed up river, to dock near where the first group would end up. After the second group finished their castle tour, we all boarded buses and went to where the ship was waiting. Food was not as good this trip, and there were some nights the "always available" menu was needed. Entertainment was very good, as brought aboard. However, why, in Germany, was there no "oom-pa-pa" band? Will we sail again with Viking? Yes. They do care, but they need to do some refresher courses. Read Less

There were several of us planning on taking this cruise. The lead couple choose due to recommendations. They dropped out due to health issues but the remaining three traveled on the Hlin. We loved it! the staff was very accommodating, the tour director very knowledgeable and the cabins were well appointed. We enjoyed the Unesco tours and seeing the beautiful cities we visited. We added days in front and back of the cruise. Amsterdam and Lucerne.. The transfers between hotel and ship and vice versa were easy. The buses used to take us to the sites were nice and comfortable. Bus drivers were polite and accommodating. The tour person on the buses were full of knowledge and very interesting. We are planning to cruise the Danube in the future as well as cruising on your ocean liners to the Mediterranean. We would and have recommended Viking to all who ask. Our experience was wonderful and we have enjoyed relating our stories of the trip to our families and friends. We connected well with a few of the staff and got to know about there origins and families. The entertainment was fun and interesting. We had music of Germany and of France while in those ports and on board entertainment with a pianist and the cruise directors game nights. There was ample opportunity to speak to the members of the crew about the places you were visiting and their recommendations about what to see or do. The staff was wonderful and extremely helpful. We chose Viking for 2 reasons...firstly TV advertising..2ndly ...they offerred an exceptional package which included flights vs their competitors. Even though timing did not work for us and we changed carriers pricing was still less than offerred by comprtitors so booking through Viking was a real PLUS! We spent 3 days prior to the cruise in Amsterdam. Vikings staff were great in providing tips when we were on our own and the city tour they provided was very enjoyable. We stayed at the Hilton on a canal close to public transportation and downtown. Hotel staff from all the concierges to management could not do enough to make our stay comfortable. There were several cafes/restaurants and shops in close proximity and while the Hilton restaureant was very good it was nice to have lots of choice. Staff on HLIN are top notch! The ship manager (Jan) was wonderful with all the passengers; our Cruise Director held daily meetings to fill us in on the following days' activities; local information and other info she thought was beneficial. We were particularly impressed that she and her staff looked after the needs of those who may have been physically challenged...booking special transportation etc. The dining staff were wonderful....and genuinely interested in meetin your every need. will we travel agin with VIKING???YOU BET we will! To see a section of Europe with many castles and lovely little villages. This was our second Viking river cruise and we loved it as much as the last one on the Danube. The airline lost my luggage so the entire cruise, I had no luggage. The staff on the Hlin were excellent having my laundry done every night free of charge. The concierge called the airlines daily and was extremely helpful as all the crew. We would definitely do another river cruise on Viking We love the scenery along the Rhine as we would cruise to our next destination. It is all part of the wonderful experience. The food is always wonderful on the Viking River Cruises, and if you don't care for what is on the menu, they always off three standards. Ribeye steak, salmon and vegetarian. I ate the steak a few times, not because I didn't like anything else, but because it was so delicious! Read Less

My husband chose the cruise. The ship was lovely and our room was very nice and well maintained. The Wi-Fi connection was very weak. The food was excellent. It was nice to have a choice of where to eat. We had dinners up on the atrium deck and could get smaller portions. The 2 evening performances were a nice addition and very enjoyable. All the tour guides were well informed and the ear phones made the tours much much better. The only disappointing experience was at the beginning in Amsterdam. We couldn,t find our Viking greeter and if we hadn't met another Viking passenger we would still be wandering the airport. Then when we found our meeting point no one would listen to the fact that we were doing a extended stay. When we got to the hotel there was no viking person to greet us we were just told at the desk that the Viking office was around the corner. We ended up doing Amsterdam on our own with a guidebook . When we finally met the Viking person in Amsterdam the word useless comes to mind. We have now done 5 Viking trips and all were very well organized until Amsterdam. I wanted to do a Rhine River Cruise and this provided a wonderful opportunity with stops at ports in Holland, Germany, France and ending in Switzerland. Tours at ports were well designed and organized; on-board activities and entertainment was excellent, as was food and service by staff. Embarkation and disembarkation were timely and without problems. The ship itself was well-maintained and all public areas were spotless. I would travel with this cruise company again. Other guests on the cruise were pleasant, friendly, and interesting. A highlight of the cruise was the on-board narration of the beautiful mid-section of the Rhine River provided by the tour director, highlighting the castles along the way and the history of the area. Chef surprised us with servings of ice cream in the afternoon while we were sitting on the sundeck listening to the narration. There was plenty of room on the deck to sit either in the sun or under shade. Read Less

We chose this cruise in April because we wanted to see the beautiful flowers in bloom in Amsterdam, and also love the castles along the Rhine. We came to Amsterdam 3 days before the cruise, and loved exploring Amsterdam, from the Keukenhof Gardens, to Anne Frank house, and the museums - Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. We loved this city! The Viking representative at the hotel was helpful in providing a map of the city, and information on how to get around. We had made reservations several weeks before we arrived for the museums and the gardens. The map helped us get around using the tram system. We appreciated the suggestions for restaurants in the area. The Cruise was wonderful. The ship met our expectations, the food was great, and the service was fantastic! The cities we visited were fascinating, and we loved everything from the windmills to the castles and the quaint French towns. We came prepared with comfortable walking shoes, and enjoyed seeing all the sights. Yes, we would go again! and hope to take another cruise to a different location. This was our first river cruise, and it won't be our last! Thank you, Viking, for a most memorable vacation! Read Less

This was our first cruise on Viking. Everything was excellent; as good or better than our previous river cruise on another line. The staff, rooms, food, tours, and briefings were tailored to our mature fellow passengers. The embarkation at Amsterdam was one of the few issues that could have been improved. We were advised of three possible docking locations ahead of time, but when we emailed the ship on the sailing day, we were told the Hiln was now at a fourth location, well out of town. We had to take an expensive taxi ride and search for the proper pier. We were also disappointed by the advance booking process. We planned to take another Viking river cruise in 2017 and were interested in Viking's certificate program -- buy one (or more) for $100, worth $200 towards our next cruise. Viking's telephone representatives assured us that we could put a deposit on the 2017 cruise, then buy the certificates on our 2016 cruise. However, once on the ship, the concierge said the certificates could not be applied to an existing reservation. We spent a few delightful days on our own in Amsterdam before the cruise and a few more in Switzerland after the cruise. The seven days on the ship were wonderful, as were the included shore excursions. We enjoyed the food, included wine and beer, and too many desserts! The room was always spotless, the communications were timely, Wi-Fi worked well, and our sailing companions were very interesting. We look forward to our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we always wanted to go to the Christmas markets in Europe. It was totally worth doing and would consider doing it every year. It gets you in the spirit of Christmas and is so fun to see all the decorations and festivities. The weather is cold, but not unbearable. The food was fabulous and it is well worth upgrading your room to a suite. We wish we could take the staff from this ship on every cruise. They really made the trip so special. The tours each day are a bit early sometimes, but full of facts and information. It is also worth arriving a day or two early in Amsterdam and doing the post trip in Lucerne. Both great cities to walk around in and beautiful. We also did the tour to Mt. Titlus and made cheese and went up the 360 degree gondola. There was also an ice cave and suspension bridge way up on top of the mountain. There was an abundance of delicious food and snacks in your cabin that are replenished daily along with fresh fruit daily. We had a nice double size shower and the floor was heated in the bathroom. While my husband slept later in the morning, I could get up and close the pocket door in the sitting room and watch tv or check emails. Worth the extra money for the extra space. I can't say enough about this cruise. We met some fabulous guests and plan to cruise together in the future. Make this cruise a bucket list must do!! Read Less

Love river cruising. Everything was convenient. The service was good and always helpful. We like the small ship and less walking for activities. The scenic views of the landscape were breathtaking. We had a illness while on board and the director helped with finding a emergency room and accompanied the sick passenger to the doctor. We enjoy meeting all the guests and after a few days knowing most of the people we travel with. We will definitely take another river cruise. Our cabin was neat and tidy and we were never rushed out for cleaning. The ship was beautiful and we enjoyed the view from the front with the serving area for food. This was new to us from previous cruises. I thought the food was delicious and never had any thing I didn't like. The entertainment was okay. Sometimes better than other times. However, our director was just delightful. She always brightened up the evening no matter what. Our excursions were perfect with the built in hearing device. I really like that and find it makes our experience more complete. The only complaint I would have is the first day on arrival we walked the city of Basel and it was too taxing. After the long flight I should have rested and then later left ship. When returning our flights were scheduled to Minneapolis and then to Dallas. They timing was too close. We missed the Dallas flight because of customs and security lines were too long. We only had about an hour and 15 minutes to make it. The airport was so big we had to ride to the Dallas connection but missed the flight by about 5 minutes. Had to stay in Minneapolis over night. This was my first Viking cruise. I chose it because of the historical significance of visiting first hand all of the sites along the Rhine river. The ship and accommodations were excellent. More importantly, the information given each evening prior to reaching our next destination was superlative. The staff was first rate and service was superlative. I must give additional credit to the supervisor of the tour guides. Her name is Petra Hall. She was always available and at everyone's disposal. Her tour guides were also superlative. They knew every detail of information at the site we went to. Petra also went on a lot of the tours to make sure that the service was top notch. It is this kind of detail that will bring me back to another Viking cruise. I had two disappointments. The cuisine aboard was just so-so. Breakfast was excellent as one had many choices to choose from. lunch was usually ordinary, nothing special. Dinner was more disappointing. Food was usually overcooked or tasteless. Sauces were nothing special. I skipped dinner twice in the dining room. I hope you can fix this. I am a chef and fussy about food, however, serving food in a large atmosphere can be excellent everyday if food is fresh and sauces are not frozen or packaged. The Radisson Blu hotel at the end of our trip in Amsterdam had its issues too. While the hotel was conveniently located in the city, the room was nicely appointed and had comfortable beds. There was too little lighting and a hazardous entry to the bathroom. One had to step up to go into the bathroom and I tripped and fell twice as did my roommate. Combined with poor lighting this could have been tragic. My suggestion, pick another hotel and check out the rooms more carefully. The best part of the Radisson stay was the tour guide through the city. Her name was Hannakah. She watched out for us and was a wealth of Amsterdam information. Read Less

Viking had everything we wanted and more. The room we chose had a balcony and every available space was used so efficiently. We loved the heated floor in the bathroom and the shower. After going on a large ship cruise this was a welcome feature! The public spaces were spacious, well designed and comfortable. The staff was there to help us with our every need. After a long day of sightseeing and walking they met us with warm, damp rolled up white towels to wipe our face and necks, a lovely touch! The food was excellent with wonderful choices. Its amazing all they can do with the size of the kitchen. So efficient and immaculate. The excursions were everything we hoped for. We learned so much from their guides. This was by far the highlight of our month in Europe. We have never done a river cruise before, but we will certainly be traveling with Viking again! From the moment we stepped on board to the time we left the cruise in Basel, we were treated with respect, courtesy and friendly crew. Everyone was amazing and went out of their way to ensure all guests had a fabulous time. The shore tours were very well organized and executed. The guides were local to the area and passionate about their cities. We travelled in the midst of the heatwave and our comfort was taken into account every step of the way. We were in the 'cheap seats' as far as our accommodation was concerned, but we had no issues with engine noise or feeling cramped. The rooms were lovely and our steward was amazing! We ate in the restaurant most nights and became very friendly with a lovely couple from Mobile, Alabama. In fact, we still email each other weekly. The food was second to none, thanks to the amazing culinary skills of Mark Anthony. Our waiters, in particular Kyle, Branislav and Jerome were very attentive and super friendly. This was a bucket-list cruise for me and I was not disappointed. We left for Amsterdam early and had two full days to spend there. We were amazed at the number of bicycles there (600,000) which made walking an adventure. We then boarded our ship, the Viking Hlin, and were personally escorted to our stateroom, which was very adequate regarding space and appointments. The best part was the spacious shower and bathroom area. The ship itself had a small library and computer area with Wi-Fi. I was born to eat and found the breakfast/lunch buffet to be excellent. The choices were well presented and very tasty. The scrambled eggs were the absolute best I have ever eaten ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As for dinner, the choices were less than on an ocean cruise, but WAY BETTER. Very gourmet! The best part was there were only 184 passengers, compared to thousands on an ocean cruise. Having fewer guests and no loud music, made for a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. With no huge stage productions, the entertainment was another surprise....consisting of local talent from the various ports. I won't tell you about it, but you will be pleasantly surprised. Very classy! Regarding port and shore excursions, there was a tour of each city visited. Be prepared to walk! I walk with a cane, but found two walking sticks to be my salvation. We were broken into three groups, with the third being the "leisure" group. Some of the tours included a motor coach and one had a taxi. Regarding the crew, we found them to be more than eager to assist and make our time onboard pleasant. I would have to say that my favorite part of the trip was cruising down the middle Rhine and seeing all of the castles. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day to view them from the top deck. With all things considered, this (our first River cruise) was our absolute favorite cruise ever out of a total of eighteen. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, but not to worry. We left the ship in Basel and spent an extra two full days in Lucerne. It is a beautiful city, but very expensive. Would I do another Viking River Cruise? In a heartbeat. Well done VIKING! Read Less

Really enjoyed the cruise could not fault anything and thoroughly recommend this holiday to everyone. Especially like the way you can sit wherever you like for dinner thus meeting and mixing with more people. The food was excellent with a great variety of choice. We personally like the more relaxed dining of the buffet lunch on the sun deck and was pleased there was no dress code. The free drinks with meals also worked very well. The itinerary worked very well with just the right amount of time in each location particularly liked the microphone system which made it very easy for everyone to hear the guide and the fact that the groups were altered for each excursion thus helping you to mix with more people. The option of having half the day free in many locations also worked very well especially with bus transport to and from towns every half an hour. Also liked the fact that bottled water supplied as you left the ship and also the fact that hot drinks and biscuits were available at all times. The evening briefings and daily news sheets ensured that you did not miss anything. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, indeed nothing was too much trouble. The evening entertainment was generally quite relaxed and fun and it was nice to have the opportunity to dance. One night of the cruise was a themed evening with food, drinks and entertainment of the Country we were travelling through which gave you the opportunity to sample everything. Read Less

For our anniversary we were considering Italy or Greece but during my research an ad for Viking Cruise popped up the price was fantastic especially the airfare part. Since everything is included we decided to book. The booking process was very easy and the agent was very responsive. Hotel information (if any) - we didn't book any pre or post cruise hotels but heard from others that they really enjoyed the pre cruise trip. Ship information - the ship was nice, small, welcoming. The main lounge area both in and out were set up for socializing and the size of the ship made this very easy. Activities - loved the activities a German cooking class, Past/Present Germany lecture, Info session on the locking system used on rivers, etc. Service - exceptional about sums it up. Port & shore excursions - Local tour guides make it...the details on license plates, renting of small garden plots, etc. plus the history was fantastic. The tours were the right length and gave enough time to explore a little on your own. Travel to embarkation Port - we booked everything through Viking and weren't disappointed - flights, transfers etc. were perfect and pick up and drop off without a hitch. Cabin - and accommodations were clean and well appointed. Amazing how they use the space so well. The shower was very cool. Tip - you can cloud and un-cloud the glass for the shower. Dining - fantastic as a celiac the chef and waiters were super and I was problem free the entire time. Even had gluten-free croissants what a treat. My husband loved the food. Children's clubs - N/A age group was in the late 40's and up. Entertainment - local and on ship talent, 50/60's music night, opera singing, trivia - fun, fun Summary - value for the money, great and relaxing vacation - highly recommend.   Read Less

Two couples met in Munich for a few day visit then we were off to Nuremberg on Nov. 1 for a one week cruise on the Danube. We have done six ocean cruises; our friend's first voyage. Viking and crew do it right. The ship with 190 guests and 50 crew provide seemless service. As much attention as you prefer or solitude as desried. We selected Nov 1 due to assorted work conflicts but experienced warmer and dryer weather than planned according to Michael the ship's chief of entertainment and excursions.. The Hotel Manager quickly check us in and escorted us to our suite. When asked - at 4 PM local time on a Saturday - how long it takes to have a dress shirt laundered - Michael replied we would have the shirts back before dinner that evening. The river experience is unique as one wakes up at a new port most mornings. The excursions are simple - one tour fits all most mornings. It works. The optional excursions add variety for the energetic traveler. The oppprtunity ot walk htrough the town with a local guide than spend independent time worked for us. One area I would suggest expanding is the wine selection. I had inquired before the cruise on hte types of wine offered wiht meals. It is an Austrian wine bottled for Viking & served throughout the cruise. A greated selection and country of origin - especially a week or longer cruise - would be worth a review by Viking. We'll be back most likely for a longer cruise in warmer months.   Read Less

We just recently returned from our week long Romantic Danube River Cruise. We were a party of four traveling on Viking for the first time. We felt like the crew gave over 100% in making sure all patrons were well taken care of at meals, going and coming from our land excursions and our time on the ship. The pace of the trip was relaxing. In addition to the many excursions planned, the schedule allowed for time to just sit on the desk and enjoy the beautiful countryside. We made lots of new friends from several countries. I would gladly sign up for another Viking River Cruise as I really enjoyed seeing the countries from a more intimate perspective. The ride was very smooth and quiet. Read Less
