We joined the cruise in Basel for a weeks cruise. The whole experience was far in excess of our expectations and definitely of high standards. The ships are well appointed, the cleaning staff are very pleasant, hard working and a delight to deal with. The barmen were attentive, with great sense of humours and their memories to our favourite drinks was impressive. I did find the main female bar member only favoured serving men so we found we had to wait a while sometimes. A bit annoying. The rooms are well set out - I do suggest you upgrade to having a separate lounge. We were traveling as 2 friends and had a twin bedroom so it was nice to have the extra room so we weren't tripping over each other. The single beds are very narrow, I nearly fell out each night but it would have been difficult to have any wider in the room. The bathrooms are super clean, the shower has great pressure and overall nicely designed. The amenities - soaps, shampoos etc are top quality and replaced each day if required. The only niggle was as the sun deck was directly above us we were woken by someone with thunder hooves doing their morning brisk, thumping power walk about 7.15am. Now that may not be early for some but hey we were on holiday and I didn't have to get up at my normal 6am start. The cruise mainly consists of people over 65-70. We are only in our late 40s but didn't find it a problem and most were a delight. The food was incredible, good menus, well presented and I loved the Villeroy and Boch cutlery and dinnerware, very tasteful. One day I overheard a women complaining there was just too much food .......... hello you don't have to eat or order everything! We gave up breakfast by the 2nd day, just didn't need it. Plus even if the desserts do look good - do you really really need it! The only time I faulted was the Banana ice cream and it was fabulous. If we were there for lunch we just had the casual lunch not the full blown a la carte menus. We would either take an excursion or go into a town where we were stopped for the day and have some local food rather than rushing back to the ship for the "free/included" lunch. We were concerned there is no kettle in the rooms for tea or coffee but there are coffee and tea stations just at the end of the corridor from the rooms and the coffee is good. We picked a couple of the excursions but used them mostly as a form of transport and did our own thing. We were "over" the castle/church trips having done that before. The 2 tours we enjoyed were the cheese factory tour (even though I've done ones before at home) and the Lindt Museum tour which we did on our own but I am a huge chocolate fan. The walking tour of Basel before we left the 1st port was very informative and we had a lovely guide. I found the internet connection was better in the rooms or below deck than up on the sun deck but overall better than I expected. The ships are very smooth, no engine noise at night and it was fasinating going through all the locks. It was a busy river with all the traffic and interesting watching all the different cargo boats. All in all I would highly recommend Viking after all they have won awards for service etc for 3 years running and I feel the awards are justly deserved. Read Less

Our needs were well attended to and the meals were lavish! The views from the ship were spectacular!!! The shore excursions were superb--especially enjoyed the small towns and Black Forest. The Mercedes Benz tour was incredible with all the robotics. Our crew was most pleasant. We enjoyed our visit to see the ship's operation and were delighted to see the Caterpillar engines since Cat headquarters are close to where we live. Would highly recommended this tour down the Rhine. The Hlin was practically brand new with all the latest gadgets and electronics. The computer area let us keep up with news back home. We sprung for the veranda but since there is so much room on the ship it really isn't needed although we enjoyed sitting outside each day. Read Less

My wife and I cruised with Viking for the second time. This time we were on Viking Hlin. The entire staff were truly fantastic - from the Captain, Hotel Manager and the rest of the crew. They were a really happy crew and that was reflected in their work and service to their guests. The food was, as usual, magnificent and we met some lovely people along the way. Viking make sure there are alternative trips for all levels of fitness and ensured that no-one missed out. If you felt you didn't enjoy this cruise, then it would have been your own fault! Read Less

My sister and I signed up for this cruise because of the Christma markets and were lucky enough to book one of the Explorer Suites. The accommodations were outstanding, our cabin steward (Ria) was terrific. The excursions were good, but difficult walking because of the cobblestones at times. The food was good, but I liked the food on our Danube cruise in 2010 better. I would have preferred to eat dinner a bit earlier. The staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant, we particularly enjoyed our private tour of the wheelhouse and dinner with the Captain. Everyone was wonderful. I was disappointed in Cologne that we couldn't tour the Cathedral in the morning as promised, we had to go back in the afternoon because of the Sunday masses. I did go back in the afternoon and noticed there were guided tours, that would have been much more meaningful than wandering around on my own. Just a suggestion. Travel to embarkation is always tiring, nothing can be done about that, but the flight arrangements were fine. The handling of Disembarkation is amazing, extremely well organized. The Viking reps in Amsterdam were very helpful. We liked the hotel. I recommend Viking to all of my friends because of the ports, tour guides, staff and overall exemplary experience. True value for the money, lots of free publicity from me! Read Less

This was our first experience on a river cruise. My husband and I can't say enough about how wonderful Viking treated us. From our first meeting by our ship cruise director, Petra, to the excursions, the meals, the attention to our needs and the friends we made. There is no favorite excursion, because they were all superb with excellent tour guides. Every evening we were given an overview of the next day's activities and then we would go to dinner. After dinner there was some form of entertainment and then we would return to our room to find a printed version of the next day's activities. We toured the Black Forest, Strausberg, Cologne, Heidelberg, saw castles on the mountain sides, toured cathedrals, palaces, windmills and learned so much history at each location. We traveled with another couple but still made new friends at meals. We will definitely take another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We have been on at least 6 Vikings and loved them and this one we hadn't taken yet and wanted to see it. We are sorry we did. It was a disappointment. The trip was okay as was the food. The weather was bad. We did enjoy Basel a lot. Would love to go back there sometime. We liked Strasboug, France, Black Forest and Cologne, Germany. The ship entertainment was weak to non-existent. We found the focus on board was to sell drinks. We don't drink alcohol and found we were outsiders on own trip. Too much focus on drinking and not enough for people like us. The Airport connections were terrible. We were dumped off at 5 am at Amsterdam and abandoned , when the British flight desk didn't open till 6:30 am. All were rude. No place to sit. Awful! The walk to the gate was way too far away...miles. Read Less
