This was our first cruise and we chose to take a Viking River Cruise down the Rhine River. We chose a pre-cruise extension and made all of the arrangements on our own, spending two nights in Amsterdam before boarding the Viking ship Hlin. Our first impressions with the ship and crew were...Wow!! The ship was amazing and the crew friendly and helpful no matter what we asked or requested. Our stateroom steward made us feel as though we were her only customers! The rest of the staff was just as wonderful and at the welcome dinner we were informed that the water levels were good and we should have no problems with our cruise to Basel. The atmosphere onboard is casual and we saw everything from t-shirts to jacket and ties, and the ages ranged from early/mid 30's to early 80's. We did get rained on during our first two ports (windmills and Koln), but when you take a European cruise in early April, that is to be expected. There is a lot of walking on some of the tours and the guides were wonderful. Trust the ship's classification of tours as strenuous or easy, they are very accurate! I suppose my only complaint would be that a couple of the tours seemed a little rushed and it would have been nice to have a little extra time to spend at some of the locations. The Black Forest tour was one where it would have been nice to have an extra hour. Yes, we would take another cruise with Viking and we are already looking for our next cruise! Read Less

We had not been back to Europe in 40 years, and we had never done a cruise of any kind. The Viking cruise on the Viking Hlin far surpassed any expectations we could have. It was literally the best vacation we have had. The ship was fantastic. The cabins were roomy enough for two to move around in easily; the furnishings were very nice and the veranda was much appreciated and much used. The staff were great, with special mention to our cabin steward, the captain and the maitre'd, not to take anything away from anyone else. Everyone bent over backwards to please and succeeded. The food was excellent. The wait staff was excellent. The tours were well planned and informative, and the four tour buses that followed the route of the ship and drove the tour groups was at once unexpected and appreciated. There are no negatives of any kind that I can apply to our cruise. We will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

Cruised the "Rhine Getaway" with girlfriends for a fabulous experience. The ship was amazing, the food could not have been better and the staff attended to our every need! The city tours were well-organized with Viking's beautiful motor coaches. The audio boxes allowed us to hear the tour guides who were extremely knowledgable (especially Peter 2m in Cologne & Weibe at Kinderdijk). Daily briefings were great & entertainment enjoyable, On-board staff from the dining room: Vladitza, Kyle, Jerome, Christian, Tamas & Ceresela; Bar staff: Denecia & Cherie Lynn; Housekeeping: Michaela; ALL were absolutely AMAZING!!! Also kudos to Sharon, Sasha, Chef Mark & Arturo for all they did every day. Especially enjoyable was lunch on the Aquavit Terrace, the Wheelhouse tour and the German night dinner and entertainment. Disembarkation was smooth and organized. Our cabin was roomier than expected & I loved the heated floor in the bathroom. This was a very high quality experience and it exceeded my expectations. Another voyage with Viking is on the top of my wish list Read Less

This was our first trip to Europe so we decided to try a river cruise. The PBS advertisements were so enticing for Viking we contacted them. We also contacted other river cruise lines and compared. Viking had everything we wanted and more. The room we chose had a balcony and every available space was used so efficiently. We loved the heated floor in the bathroom and the shower. After going on a large ship cruise this was a welcome feature! The public spaces were spacious, well designed and comfortable. The staff was there to help us with our every need. After a long day of sightseeing and walking they met us with warm, damp rolled up white towels to wipe our face and necks, a lovely touch! The food was excellent with wonderful choices. Its amazing all they can do with the size of the kitchen. So efficient and immaculate. The excursions were everything we hoped for. We learned so much from their guides. We took the pre-extension in Lucerne. The hotel was very nice and located near old town and excellent restaurants. Loved the Black Forest and the cuckoo clock demonstration - came home with two! We have already booked a cruise with Viking for 2017. That should more than show how we enjoyed our cruise! Read Less

I have always resisted the idea of a cruise with 5000+ strangers, but the river cruises did attract my interest. The Viking Rhine River cruise was wonderful! Every aspect ... the staff, the guests (fewer than 200), the food, and the shore excursions ... were outstanding in every regard. The ship, the Viking Hlin, was quiet with no sounds of the engine thrumming; the staterooms were very comfortable and efficient in use of space and never felt crowded. But, the best parts were certainly the people: the staff just could not have been more helpful and professional, and they were genuine in their attention to each guest. A wonderful trip! Read Less

Every detail was attended to, the excursions were first rate led by excellent tour guides. Unfortunately, what should have been a great Rhine cruise was marred for over half the passengers on the Viking Hlin. Within two days of boarding the ship over 60 out of 188 passengers came down with gastroenteritis. The ship staff took virtually no measures to control the virus so it tore through the rest of the passengers in short order. Sick people were loaded onto tour buses with healthy ones, self-service buffets continued, and there was no systematic disinfection of handrails or shared furniture. To add insult to injury they didn't bother to obtain rehydration solution or antidiarrheal medication, even though they knew dozens of passengers were sick and local shops closed on the weekend. Handling of special diets was adequate, but not up to the high standards they claimed when I booked my ticket. Despite my telling them about my gluten-free/egg-free diet six weeks in advance, breakfast was a sad affair. There wasn't a single bread or cereal aboard I could eat; even the hash browns were made with eggs. I was completely left out of the two afternoon teas because the only gluten-free option was egg custard. If you don't have a special diet or mind a round of gastroenteritis with no medicine for relief, the rest of the cruise is to be recommended. Shore excursions are to carefully chosen sites, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The tour guides are somewhat variable in quality, but most are very good. I was only disappointed by one guide, who was intent on telling a particular story and glossed over what we were looking at. There are both included and optional tours, plus short walks into port cities lead by the conceirge. Be sure to consider the optional tours which go to interesting places and provide good value. Viking provides a transmitter/earpiece system so it's easy to hear all the narration. When the ship is cruising, there are slide shows in the afternoon, appealing spreads of local pastries, and music in the evening. The cabins are well appointed and the information on their website is spot-on. L'Occitane toiletries are a nice touch. The lounge is big and comfortable with floor-to-ceiling windows and plenty of seating. There is a rooftop sundeck as well, with plenty of lounge chairs and the option of sitting in the sun or the shade. Dining room tables seat either six or ten guests and lounge seating is in conversation groups. This is a good arrangement if you like to mingle and talk to other people on the ship. Mealtimes are fairly regimented if you want to enjoy the main menu; breakfast is the only meal with a fair amount of flexibility. Dinner was often later than I would have liked. We were typically seated at 7pm and not served until maybe 7:45. The late dinners combined with 8:30 am excursions meant I ended up a bit sleep-deprived. Because of the relatively small size of the ship there were typically only 3-4 selections for lunch and dinner, plus a menu of fixed options. The food was fresh and well-prepared. Wine is served with lunch and dinner. They serve the same complementary wine with all the meals the whole week. If you want something different there are some really nice wines for purchase on the wine list. Be aware with the Rhine cruises that the ones originating in Amsterdam are going upriver. That means more time on the water and less on shore excursions. Choose your direction by whether you like sitting on the sundeck and watching the river go by, or having more time to wander the local cities. There isn't a right or wrong answer; the cruises are just different. Read Less

Dress was casual and we were glad of that after all the walking and summer heat. All staff were professional, friendly and courteous. Going again next year to the Danube. Can't wait. With such a small number of people on the ship it was easy to make friends. Would recommend to you to book now as they fill up quickly. I enjoyed the cooking demonstrations and Oliver at the piano. We joined the cruise in Basel for a weeks cruise. The whole experience was far in excess of our expectations and definitely of high standards. The ships are well appointed, the cleaning staff are very pleasant, hard working and a delight to deal with. The barmen were attentive, with great sense of humours and their memories to our favourite drinks was impressive. I did find the main female bar member only favoured serving men so we found we had to wait a while sometimes. A bit annoying. The rooms are well set out - I do suggest you upgrade to having a separate lounge. We were traveling as 2 friends and had a twin bedroom so it was nice to have the extra room so we weren't tripping over each other. The single beds are very narrow, I nearly fell out each night but it would have been difficult to have any wider in the room. The bathrooms are super clean, the shower has great pressure and overall nicely designed. The amenities - soaps, shampoos etc are top quality and replaced each day if required. The only niggle was as the sun deck was directly above us we were woken by someone with thunder hooves doing their morning brisk, thumping power walk about 7.15am. Now that may not be early for some but hey we were on holiday and I didn't have to get up at my normal 6am start. The cruise mainly consists of people over 65-70. We are only in our late 40s but didn't find it a problem and most were a delight. The food was incredible, good menus, well presented and I loved the Villeroy and Boch cutlery and dinnerware, very tasteful. One day I overheard a women complaining there was just too much food .......... hello you don't have to eat or order everything! We gave up breakfast by the 2nd day, just didn't need it. Plus even if the desserts do look good - do you really really need it! The only time I faulted was the Banana ice cream and it was fabulous. If we were there for lunch we just had the casual lunch not the full blown a la carte menus. We would either take an excursion or go into a town where we were stopped for the day and have some local food rather than rushing back to the ship for the "free/included" lunch. We were concerned there is no kettle in the rooms for tea or coffee but there are coffee and tea stations just at the end of the corridor from the rooms and the coffee is good. We picked a couple of the excursions but used them mostly as a form of transport and did our own thing. We were "over" the castle/church trips having done that before. The 2 tours we enjoyed were the cheese factory tour (even though I've done ones before at home) and the Lindt Museum tour which we did on our own but I am a huge chocolate fan. The walking tour of Basel before we left the 1st port was very informative and we had a lovely guide. I found the internet connection was better in the rooms or below deck than up on the sun deck but overall better than I expected. The ships are very smooth, no engine noise at night and it was fasinating going through all the locks. It was a busy river with all the traffic and interesting watching all the different cargo boats. All in all I would highly recommend Viking after all they have won awards for service etc for 3 years running and I feel the awards are justly deserved. Read Less

They were very easy going, took care of you and did whatever they could to ensure that your vacation cruise was a positive experience. Would do the same cruise again just because it was fun and informative. Food was always outstanding and the food and beverage staff were outstanding and fun to be around. We did the extended stay before the cruise so we were able to get our senses about us before the departure, and just for the heck of it we went to Lucerne for a few nights and enjoyed the stay in Switzerland immensely. The food was incredible - from the fancy dining to delicious breakfasts & lunches - even the cookies by the coffee machine were fantastic. We have travelled to many places, but this was our first time on a cruise. The places we saw were amazing and the way the staff took care of us was truly second to none. We highly recommend everyone takes a trip with the Viking Cruise at least once - it is definitely worth every penny. Not one single regret......not too often you can say that about a holiday!! The service was exceptional aboard the Viking Hlin; the accommodations comfortable and thoughtfully appointed, the dining exceptional, the itinerary excellent. The ship was spotlessly clean, and the staff made a point of providing for and even anticipating our needs. The tours included in the itinerary were greatly enhanced by having local tour guides, and the audio system allowed freedom to explore while listening. All of the optional excursions were worth the cost. The itinerary allows a balanced of "programmed" activity and freedom to explore. Sharon, our program director, was visible and helpful, providing an overview of each upcoming day (handily reinforced on a guide left in the room each evening during turn-down, and including museum addresses, hours, pricing, restaurant info--a thorough overview of options in each location). We loved the trip into the Alps to Mount Titlis, the extended time in gorgeous Lucerne, tours of the Black Forest (including a brief hike in the forest, which made all those Grimm stories of children being eaten there seem quite plausible), the beautiful Alsace region (and trip along the wine trail to a family operated winery)--on and on! All of that, and mornings on the Rhine beginning with a lovely breakfast (jams and yogurt made on board), and evenings ending with a sumptuous meal. It was even more than we expected, and we'll use Viking again and again. Read Less

On April 7, 2015 we were a family of 8 from Hawaii that boarded the HLIN in Amsterdam for a Rhine River Cruise ending in Basel. I want to say the experience for all of us was OUTSTANDING, the boat was incredible, clean, well organized, and having been in the hotel industry most of my life, I'm 73, must say the staff was absolutely outstanding!! They were professional, helpful, friendly, sincerely looked out for us and connected with us from the moment we came on board. The food was excellent and the Chef from the Philippines prepared us a special meal which was outstanding! One young lady who was our server for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was Cherielyn, she took care of the 8 of us each meal, each day for the whole trip and works in the main dining room and her warmness, personality and professionalism was an added bonus to our having a wonderful trip. The staff and management of the HLIN Boat was so well organized, always ready to help, and always had a sincere smile on their faces. The tours, the boat, the food, the staff, from the Captain to the deck hands were incredible!! The river cruise was the start of our honeymoon and we felt unsure what to expect as we had never done a cruise before. Well all I can say it was exceptional and outstanding. The service was excellent as was the food and wine. We couldn't fault other than they need to have some toothpicks which I know is picky!! We were trying to fill out the sheet with comments on how they could improve the cruise and the toothpicks was the only thing we could come up with. The tours were excellent as was the guide. I did do an extra tour to the winery - it was okay but not as good as the included tours we did. In the end we could not fault Viking and considering we were on our honeymoon at no time did we feel over crowded with 197 other guests. Would thoroughly recommend Viking so much so we have just booked another cruise for next year at the Captains recommendation. Read Less
