I heard about Viking from watching PBS. I watch PBS and saw the ad on the television. I work with someone who highly recommended Viking. The staff were the very best and all were so friendly. Our needs were met and the local guides were well informed and friendly. Our cabin was the perfect size with a balcony. It was cleaned and ready when we returned from the shore excursions. We extended the stay in Amsterdam and Viking took care of all transportation back to the airport and even walked into airport with us to direct us where to go . The ship program director was most interesting on pre- excursion history of what we would see and the history of the location. The meals were delicious and the wait staff was friendly and always keep assisting you with meal selections. We plan on another Viking River cruise in the next year or so. I will stay with Viking since we had such a great experience on this trip down the Rhine. Read Less

Thanks to all the staff for making our vacation the BEST EVER! This is an absolute must for everyone! Check your bucket list and write this cruise down! Once in a lifetime experience is a minimum! We plan to come again year after year. The destinations were amazing! The food and service is first class, truly 5 star! We will definitely travel the world with Viking, thanks again for everything! I just can’t write enough good words and praise for Captain Tomasz Danelski & his crew. Our trip was made incredibly memorable by Hotel Manager Alexandra Woods, Master Chef Nuno Maia (World renowned), Director Daniela Ebert, Maitre D’ Marci Jasinski, Bartender Extraordinaire Goska Kurowska! Also cannot ever forget The Legendary Dominika Lipska, Caramfil Florin Andrei and of course Rumen the Musician! These people are doing such a great job and I really hope to see them again on our next epic adventure! Read Less

The total experience is wonderful. From the very start when we were on the dock, Viking saw to our every need. The food is excellent. The atmosphere on board the ship is relaxed. The dinning is relax and free form. The tours offered on the ship were first class. I have take other tours in Europe and have had guides with PhD conduct tours. The guides that Viking provided were just as skilled as any I have had before. My children played the board game Trival pursuit, the version on the Hlin is from England, is a little hard to follow. I think you should get an American version of the game. Armin Hermann is very warm and engaging. He sat and talked with me several times. My adult children were on the trip with me and my wife. I was concerned that they might be bored, but they had a great time also. Read Less

My friend and I chose this cruise because it was a dream we had always had. When the price dropped so low and included air, we jumped on it. Viking couldn't have been more wonderful to us. The pace was perfect and allowed us to relax as well as participate in excursions. We met lovely people with similar interests and have maintained contact with them. The atmosphere of the ship and services offered made me feel like I was on an expensive luxury cruise rather than being in the cheapest cabin available. After we got on board, I forgot all the hassle we had on the trip over. The Paris airport was a nightmare. We arrived with enough time to transfer to Basel but the red tape and disorganization made us miss our flight. We spent the entire day in the airport and missed seeing Basel. I believe that Viking should take this process into consideration and allow more time to get through Paris. Other than that, I would take another cruise with Viking in a New York minute. Read Less

This was a family/friends group of 25 multi-generational and widely diverse persons traveling together (ages 18-82). We choose the Rhine Getaway Amsterdam/Basel for our 1 week journey with post-Lake Lucerne. With such a wide range of ages, as well as backgrounds, I wasn't sure it would appeal or be equally enjoyed by all - HOWEVER, each and everyone of us were beyond thrilled with the entire vacation. It Exceeded all of our expectations. From the second we all were met at the airport by our Viking Host, to the minute we stepped off, every detail was handled. The staff and crew went above and beyond to make our entire trip exceptional for the whole group! Ship is very bright airy and open with views from every space. Cabins very clean, updated, and provided tons of storage. Our cabin steward was never seen, but our cabins were always impeccably cleaned and I never came back to an unmade room. If you laid out laundry/or pressing, it was done and returned within the hour. I can not say enough about the quality of service. My group met in the lounge for a bon voyage cocktail once on board - the bartender asked each of us our name & from that point forward remembered us, as well as our drink of preference! The Lounge was a favorite hangout. The entertainment pianist was fantastic appealing to all ages and played to her audience - we looked forward to every night to "unwind" from our busy day - with some nights "wound-up" for a fun filled night of singing and dancing. They also had several other entertainment performers/talks which were excellent. The food was great, never disappointing, however, it would have been nice to maybe have a late night snack or food available in the lounge or terrace restaurant late evenings. The upside to that is they do allow you to bring on food/drink from ports, so many nights we sampled our purchases in from the village we toured each day. The 24/7 coffee bar was awesome and not really that far of a walk from anyone's cabin. The coffee/espresso selection amazing and the cookies every afternoon/evening the best! The program director was a wealth of info and always available as well as the officers of the ship. The Captain was always available to answer maritime history, or navigational questions as we floated down the Rhine. Especially while moving thru the locks, which was very interesting. There were a few glitches like the ship needed to move during one port stop for generator installation while we were on our included tour, but the crew made sure it was the least disruptive as possible. Made for a long walk from the city center - but honestly, not really a huge issue. They at least saw that maintenance was handled to not cause us to deviate from our itinerary or miss any port time. One last note, as most, the initial reaction for the group was this trip would be an expensive vacation. HOWEVER, by the end, we all felt like it was a total value & exceptional price for everything included and the level of service that we each received. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Read Less

From meeting at the airport to departure the crew were very attentive but not overbearing. Being physically challenged I expected challenges getting around on the ship and ports of call. They will tailor everything to meet you abilities and desire to see the most. Even if you bite off more than you can handle they will rescue you with dignity and not raise a fuss. Yes they upfront cost may schock you but with all that is included it actually cost less overall than other cruise. The cruise line has thier own contracted bus service and tour guides. They go out of thier way to give you the best vacation ever. We visited a dutch cheese factory that took care to ensure all were greeted and tried all thier product. The cruise line uses audio headsets that are set for each group so that all can hear the guides. Don't be afraid to ask questions, they love it when they know you are engagef Read Less

My mom wanted to take a trip she is 87 and we thought a river cruise would be awesome and it was that and more. We got to see little towns. All the transportation for excursions was awesome, the ship was just beautiful, we had a suite on the third deck was great to sit outside and watch the little towns go by the riverside. The wait staff was so friendly and made us laugh. The food was great, everything was just a fantastic trip!!! Want to do another river cruise with Viking!!! We would go and visit the little towns and they provided either walking or taking a little train. It was great, we had enough time to sample some of the towns food. Was just an overall GREAT trip. We flew into Zurich and stayed a couple of days in Lucern Switzerland, that was beautiful, the Viking representative was great, showed us around the town and how to find the boats and buses. Just a GREAT trip!! LOVED IT!! Read Less

Our first time on Viking and we were very impressed! The ship was in excellent condition, the crew was so gracious and helpful! Always willing to lend a hand. Embarkation went well, the only complaint would be that Basel is closed on Sundays, would like to have had the opportunity to visit some places there. The food was very good, what I would put in the top 95% of the foods I have had on other cruises. Dinners would correspond to the city/country we were in. The weather was a bit cool at times, but it was April. The provided excursions were very educational, and the optional ones we purchased were a great value, did the wine tour in Strasbourg and the beer tour in Cologne. All the tour guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned alot about the history of the areas we visited. We are definitely going to cruise with Viking again. Read Less

This was my first cruise & trip to Europe & I would go back again in a heartbeat! The crew & staff were extremely friendly & delivered top shelf service at every turn. The entertainment was quite enjoyable. The ports/sights were spectacular! the ship was always clean & the cabin was spectacular. I have severe food allergies and the maitre de, kitchen & dining room staff were attentive & cautious every time I entered either dining facility. They prepared meals that were specifically made to order per meal! I was actually afraid I wouldn't eat anything other than salads up until the day we boarded but they soon put me at ease & made sure every meal was served with a smile & put me completely at ease! I am so grateful to them for giving me the piece of mind so that I could enjoy the experience of a lifetime! Read Less

The captain even took time to play chess with my 11 year old son, an experience he will never forget! The excursions were well organized. The tour guides were knowledgeable, professional and friendly we learned a lot about the areas we were exploring. The food was amazing! There was a great deal of variety of deliciously prepared gourmet food. The waiter made sure we were all happy with our meals and made sure we enjoyed our experience each evening. River cruising was so relaxing. Highly recommended by my friend who goes on a cruise 3 times a year and has been to most places everyone would like to go to. Our cabin suite was a bit pricy and booked at the last minute. However, I was given a discounted rate by my travel agent. I enjoyed everything that we got from Viking, from the moment we stepped in the Hlin Viking Longship. The staff who met us at the airport and the staff on board were very friendly and accommodating. The food was mostly great served by the friendly staff. Our room was always kept fresh and clean. The daily excursion was very informative and well planned. We had our own personal time as the excursions are only done in the morning and end around noon time. I can say, I got hooked with Viking, and plan to take more Viking River cruise in the future. This was my "retirement vacation" after 33 years with the Fire Department. My wife and I saw the ads for Viking River cruises and said "why not?" My wife used to book corporate travel when she worked in the corporate world, so she handled the arrangements. We decided to spend a couple of extra days in Europe on each end of the cruise, so we did 2 extra days in Amsterdam and 2 in Basel, Switzerland. She booked the trip, and when the itinerary came in, we were a little concerned. The initial trip over, we would have flown out of Boston with a connecting flight from Keflavik, Iceland. We prefer direct flights, but this for this leg of the trip it wasn't a major concern. The return flight, however had us leaving Zurich, catching a connecting flight in Copenhagen to Keflavik and then to Boston.. it would have been total of 13 hours to get home. We inquired about getting direct flights, we got a Boston to Amesterdam flight on Delta. The return trip was from Zurich to New York/JFK with connecting flight to Boston on Delta. Our flight was nice, we arrived in Amsterdam around 7:30 their time. We were met at the airport by a Viking representative, who made sure that we and our luggage made t to the hotel. The hotel was the Raddison Blu. it was very nice and we ate at the restaurants at the hotel. We did do a hop on/hop off boat tour of Amsterdam. One of our stops was the Van Gogh Museum (my wife is a student of art history). If you take the boat tour, make sure that you get back early enough. the stop that was closest to our hotel closed. We ended up walking distance and eventually hailed a pedicab to take us back. The transit to the ship was smooth. There was still time before the ship set sail to do little exploring if one wished. We had a suite cabin, it was very nice, with a sitting room as well as a bedroom. We left Amsterdam in the evening and arrived in Kinderjik, a UNESCO heritage site. We did an excursion to the windmills. One of the things that Viking does is have a group for those with mobility issues. One gets to see the same things, the tour is at a slightly slower pace. After Kinderjik, we cruised downriver to Cologne (Köln in German) We did a walking tour in the afternoon and visited the Köln Cathedral. In the evening I did the Köln pub crawl, visiting 5 different German pubs and sampling different varieties of Kölsch beers. Next was Koblenz and Rudeshiem, where we toured the Marksburg Castle. Again we cruised down the Rhine to Heidelberg and Speyer. Speyer had a transportation museum, with many aircraft, trains, boats and vehicles. It is hard to miss a Boeing 747 in Lufthansa livery looking like it just took off! I would have loved to tour the museum, but being a self professed "airplane geek" I probably would have missed the boat! We left Speyer and headed for Strasbourg, in the Alsace Lorraine. Strasbourg is beautiful. I took a winery tour there. We made one more stop in Germany...Breisach. We took a bus to the Black Forest region. Upon the return, we set sail for Basel. Once we arrived in Basel, we disembarked, then took the bus to Lucerne. Our hotel room at the Grand Hotel Lucern was, in a word, magnificent! We spent two days in Lucerne, Taking a Lake Lucerne cruise as well as visiting the Titlis Glacier. We said goodbye to Switzerland as we drove by bus to Zurich and then home. Food: The food on the boat is awesome! Breakfast is served buffet style , with many choices. Lunch is low key, dinners are wonderful .There are usually 3 different menu choices as well as 3 "staples"... I could go on and on about our experience with Viking, but I would probably be writing the equivalent of Dostoevsky's War and Peace. If you are thinking about going on a Viking River Cruise, take my advice... DO IT! Read Less

On April 7, 2015 we were a family of 8 from Hawaii that boarded the HLIN in Amsterdam for a Rhine River Cruise ending in Basel. I want to say the experience for all of us was OUTSTANDING, the boat was incredible, clean, well organized, and having been in the hotel industry most of my life, I'm 73, must say the staff was absolutely outstanding!! They were professional, helpful, friendly, sincerely looked out for us and connected with us from the moment we came on board. The food was excellent and the Chef from the Philippines prepared us a special meal which was outstanding! One young lady who was our server for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was Cherielyn, she took care of the 8 of us each meal, each day for the whole trip and works in the main dining room and her warmness, personality and professionalism was an added bonus to our having a wonderful trip. The staff and management of the HLIN Boat was so well organized, always ready to help, and always had a sincere smile on their faces. The tours, the boat, the food, the staff, from the Captain to the deck hands were incredible!! I couldn't and can't think of anything that Viking could have done to make our trip better, it was perfect!! This was our first river cruise and from all of us, it will not be our last with Viking River Cruises.” Read Less
