This was a 'bucket list' cruise which did not disappoint. We had sailed with Viking in China (5 stars) and this could not compare with that experience. That said, it delivered on all of its promises, with the exception of the hotel accomodation before and after. The experience on the ship was excellent, made better by the seamless planning and execution of the outstanding staff on board. By the end of the week we felt as though we were friends with everybody. Mealtimes were great, with excellent food and attentive service. We gained 5 pounds each! Our room (french balcony) was small but adequate, with a great shower and heated bathroom floor! TV reception was surprisingly good, watching the BBC world news was a treat. We slept well. Coffee and biscuits were always available, and very good! The shore excursions were good, with local guides, some of whom were excellent, none were awful. Highlights were the opportunities to explore on our own - in Mainz the Chagall glass in St Stevens was amazing, and worth the walk to see it. Viking handle the details so well. Luggage was transported efficiently - amazing to see the entire crew (including the Captain!) form a human chain to unload the bags at disembarkation. The only negatives were the choice of hotels before and after. Both were in business districts and somewhat out of the way. Le Meridien in Paris was very disappointing, even though we were upgraded to an Elite room. But it was within walking distance of the Arc de Triomphe and convenient to a Metro station. I can only imagine that this would be a challenging trip for folks with mobility challenges. Lots of walking and stairs would advise careful consideration. Read Less

We had always wanted to see the Swiss Alps and parts of France and Germany. Paris was wonderful to explore and set us all up for an exciting time abroad. Our trip from Dallas to Toronto to Paris went smoothly. The air bookings were fine, however, the end of our trip was not up to Viking standards, and I will touch upon that at the end. The arrangements were impeccable as was the communication around all the trip itself. We appreciated the very professional, informative all-inclusive cruise documents which included the "Before You Go" introduction at the beginning of the brochure. That whole brochure was fantastic. Not only was it informative, but it was a wonderful way to get us excited about going! Dining was simply a wonderful experience. The food was fabulous, the wines were delightful. We just cannot say enough about the exceptional dining experience. The ship itself was very, very clean and well-maintained. The upper deck gave us a lovely view of the Mosel and Rhine, however, the chairs were often taken under the canopy and we did not want to sit in the direct sun when temperatures were in the 90's! The tours were wonderful. Our guides were great and we loved their expertise and personal interjections of facts. The morning tours were great before the very high heat took over! Coming back to the ship was like coming home again. The staff was so friendly and we were greeted with a wet towel or a cool drink. Such a nice and unexpected touch! The other guests on-board were having a good time, as we were. A big plus was the wine with lunch and dinner. We appreciated that being included in the price rather than charging each time. The wines were excellent, too, by the way. We actually tried to find them in the states. We participated in many of the tours and each was wonderful - our favorites were Palace of Versailles, Notre Dame the lake excursions, the cog wheel train up the alps and the lake shore excursions. Our trip was lovely except for the END at the Renaissance Hotel in Switzerland. We left our bags outside our hotel room, as requested and they were loaded onto the coach to take us to the airport. The only time the carry on was out of my sight was from the hotel hallway to the coach. Unfortunately, when I opened up my carry on at home, my corporate computer shoulder bag (back with silver buckles) was missing out of the top of my blue carry-on. I was disappointed that this had happened. I did write to Viking but never heard a word back from Viking. There was no computer in the bag, only some inexpensive jewelry, about 50 euro, incidentals and some work documents. As I noted, I did report this to Viking directly on an e-mail but I did not ever receive a reply from anyone, which seemed unusual. Also, the Renaissance hotel was not up to Viking standards. We had one towel for the two of us and had requested a towel from our hotel room that first evening. We ended up sharing a towel and never had a facecloth. No one ever came up with a new towels. The towel hanging in the bathroom was also dirty looking. We just think Viking should be aware of this since Viking had treated us so well and had such high standards of excellence in all that they did on the entire cruise - from quality brochures to fine dining, to intelligent guides and tours, to spot-on travel arrangements. Additionally, and unfortunately, the flight out of Switzerland was delayed which in turn made us miss our connecting flight in the States. We ended up sitting in Newark, NJ for over seven hours trying to get a flight out of New Jersey to Dallas, Texas. That was very disappointing and we were very, very tired. Viking tours are wonderful and we would love, love, love to go on another one some day. Our only wish is that we had started years ago and could keep going back for more! Thank you for a most wonderful, celebratory, memorable, educational, very-organized delightful time with my dear husband of 45 years! Read Less

We spent a week in Switzerland, starting in Geneva, we traveled on tomZurich, Zermatt and Basel where we got onto the ship. What a gorgeous country Switzerland is! Wethen took a Rhine cruise and ended up in Paris for 3 days. All taken care of by Viking. It was effortless, no hassels, first class hotels . The train ride was amazing and the tour guides are really superb, nothing was left to chance and our comfort was all that mattered. Food allergies were taken very seriously and the chef made sure everything was done correctly, the waiters were excellent and left nothing to chance they were truly five star. The tours were amazing, very knowledgeable guides and for the slower passengers there was always a group that took an easier path and fewer stairs. This was our 34th cruise, 2nd with Viking and we are now loyal Viking travelers. We have booked and Alaskan and a Mediterranean Ocean cruise for next year. Read Less

This cruise had all the elements we were looking to achieve as an experience that led to our commitment/marriage in Paris at the end of our trip. The Swiss pre cruise was a memorable experience and I would highly recommend it. The excursions, both included and addons, were all excellent and really make the river cruise the valuable experience we expected. The customer service. cabin, dining and entertainment were all 5 star and what we have come to expect from Viking. The staff helped us with our Paris extension plans and arranged for an upgrade to a larger hotel room that made our wedding preperations much easier. Beginning with the first contact we made with Viking for this once in a lifetime trip, the support from Viking Air, the airport meet and greet and departure co ordination, the Swiss staff, the ship's crew and ground staff in Paris, all our expectations were exceeded. My husband and I were looking for a special way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary so we decided to take our first Viking River Cruise. We were NOT disappointed and have been bitten by the Viking travel bug! We chose to add 2 extra days in Basel before the cruise started. After an orientation walk by a very informative and personable guide we had plenty of time to discover Basel on our own. Once we boarded The Hild, the onboard staff was all so helpful and friendly. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us! Our balcony gave us the option to watch the river go by in our pajamas if we chose. We enjoyed the relaxed dining room attire and the food was marvelous! In addition to the included excursions we took at least one extra excursion in each port. Our favorite was probably the Alsatian Wine and Tasting excursion which was as much about strolling through Alsace as it was about tasting wine. We had the pleasure of visiting the Albert Seltz vineyard where we had a direct audience with the vintner himself who was very knowledgeable and friendly. We wish we had added 2 days in Amsterdam to the end of our cruise but that might have to wait for our next trip. We loved that The Hild was small and cozy and not a overwhelming, crazy, floating megalopolis as some cruise ships have felt to us. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise and Viking! Read Less

This was our 2nd Viking Cruise...the prior one was on the Danube. We wanted to see new/different part of the country so chose the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. The ship was brand new and really lovely. Rooms were comfortable and very well appointed, with very comfortable beds and heated bathroom floors!! The lounges are very nice and the service is beyond belief. All meals are excellant and servers are extremely attentive. I would rate Viking as one of the very best in the business...including service, coordination, cuisine, flight arrangements, transfers...you name it, and it was exceedingly well done. We traveled with friends and made new friends along the way. If you want to see more castles along the river, we commend the Danube. The Rhine is much wider, and more commercially travelled. WE are going on our 3rd in the spring and know it will be just as excellant as the last 2! Read Less

Previous trips with Viking very good. Staff were excellent along with accommodations. Food was average for a river cruise, not as good or varied as previous cruises. we received very little concern. Service was excellent, but for the most part the meals were uninspired and when questioned as to variety or quality we received little response. Disappointed in entertainment on the ship, not as good or interesting as on previous cruises. Not much emphasis on artisans from local areas. Tours were very fast with little time to enjoy local culture. Very fast paced with guides who wanted to make certain you saw highlights of every local monument with little time to enjoy the moment! Always felt we were being rushed with little tome to enjoy the moment. Since we were traveling through some world's greatest vineyards, it would have been good to have local growers on board to explain the process of growing their vineyards. Overall, the experience seemed rather bland. The ease of arriving and leaving for both the hotels and ship were excellent. Read Less

Intimate cruise, all inclusive, no nickel-and-diming us. Excellent guides, great staff, plethora of ports of call. Sooooo much better than previous ocean cruises. We especially liked all of the UNESCO heritage sites and the wine tasting opportunities. We met some amazing people, primarily because we got to see them in an intimate setting throughout the cruise. In fact, we’re cruising with people we met on this cruise again. They have become very good friends. The staff was amazing! They perform multiple duties because it is a very small ship compared to ocean cruisers. They were excellent at all their different jobs. From beginning to end we were pampered and taken care of. We lack for nothing, and didn’t have to purchase anything extra for this trip. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth the money. We still talk about this trip to our friends frequently. We signed up for one twice as long a year later. We are looking forward to cruising with biking again and again. Read Less

I chose this cruise so my husband would have a very nice introduction into Europe. So, I chose it for the ports and land tours. We arrived in Pairs and stayed at the Pullman Eiffel Tower and explored Paris (!) both day and night. We did some on our own and also took the Highlights of Paris tour and then the Montmartre tour with the funniest and knowledgeable Janice. She was absolutely delightful, We then boarded a bus and traveled to Luxembourg and saw the American WWII Cemetery and then on to Trier Germany where we met with the Viking Hild. We cruised the Mozelle and Rhine Rivers by an expert captain and crew. Our Cruise Director Carla was ever so attentive to our stay and excursions. She was so kind and caring. The food was amazing. We also loved dancing to a wonderful Pianist Cezar. You would think we would be tired after sightseeing, but Cezar had us up dancing. Service and cleanliness impeccable. The people at the ports were delightful and our tour guides were so well educated to the area. I liked that you could do all the excursions or just be on your own. We so enjoyed Germany especially Mainz, Spyer and Cochem. We sailed to Strasbourg France - again amazing. Our final cruise stop was Bazel Switzerland. Amazing. We took the option tour of the Alps which was well worth it. We also cruised the lake in Zurich. Travel plans including plane travel, arrival,pick-up and disembarkation were so sooth. Again - Amazing. From the travel person assisting with the reservation on to the cruise and home. So personalized. I loved the volume of passengers. We made great friends and memories. I did not feel like a number. Amazing. My husband so loved Europe and Viking that we already are planning on our next trip soon! Read Less

I chose Viking due to the fact that myself and my family have previously taken a Viking River cruise down the Danube about five years ago and had a spectacular experience. This time we tried the Switzerland to Paris river cruise which took us down the Rhiene and Mosel rivers. What can I say, the Hild, a brand new ship, 2017, was fantastic in all its appointments. The staff was very accommodating in every way, the food was off the hook great, the entertainment was very good and the excursions and guides were top notch. The Captain, Johan was very professional an yet personable along with the Hotel Director, David and the Director of the restaurant, Theresa couldn't be better. The Chef was absolutely top notch, always delighting us with his creations, so great thanks to him. However, the star and hero in a few cases due to unforeseen bumps in the road was Suzie. She was very professional through a couple of rough spots which included a medical emergency and very knowledgeable of where we were, what we would experience and tended to all of the ships guests needs. She certainly is an asset to Viking and deserves a mountain of recognition. Suzie, you made it great for all of us! This cruise would have gotten a solid 5 from me if it wasn't for the Hotel area we were put up for 2 days in Switzerland. The Hotel that Viking chose was in a Techno area of the city, very bland and out of away from the "old" town which I was expecting to stay in. This would have been a much better experience, It kind of painted a less than palatable start for the trip. The Hotel, even though a large one, didn't seem to be ready to accept the number of guests that were arriving. We had to wait for our rooms a very long time. Even then, Suzie stepped in and made things a bit better. Thanks to all, A great trip, would go again if they tweaked the Swiss Hotel issue. Read Less

We just returned about a week ago from a 7 (?) night cruise on the Rhine on the Viking Hild. Our first trip to Europe. What a wonderful experience. The ship/cruise director Mathias, is about as good at his job as anyone we've ever seen. Super friendly, upbeat, informative, humorous, fun, etc. ... but so was everyone else. You get the feeling they all like what they do and they all get along. The bartenders, servers, etc., all just superb! The excursions (all included) were top notch.... (we chose a couple extra optional ones)... Loved Strasbourg, France!... The Cologne Cathedral is jaw dropping, the medieval castles sop interesting.... Being from Northern California, we are kind of wine snobs. We purchased the beverage package, which is unlimited cocktails, sodas, wines from the dinner wine list, etc. A great value at $300. per couple/room for the entire week.. I think they lost money on us. The nice selection of red wine lacked anything to die for..... By the last night however, we had figured out what was the best red.....and it was not one of the more expensive european ones. It was a less expensive California red. They have no problem if you bring your own wine on board. No corkage fee. Next time we bring a case of assorted killer California reds to last the week. Overall this cruise from 1 to 10 was a 15!!! As avid travelers, who are hard to impress, we can honestly say...we were VERY impressed. We booked through Costco travel, and there was a $700. Costco gift card waiting in the mailbox when we returned.... We also got a $100. on board credit for booking thru Costco, which we applied to our drink package - reducing it to $200. upon settling our bill. Read Less

The food was exceptional. The ports were fantastic and beautiful. The tours and the guides were fun, informative and just perfect. Left the ship in the morning for the tours, back on the ship for lunch and afternoon free to explore the city or lounge on the ship. The entertainment on the ship was wonderful. It's a small ship without a lot of the frills of a big ship but that is part of what I liked about it. All the staff new your name and what your preferences were.
