The two week, Grand European River Cruise appealed to us much more than a weeklong cruise. We believed it would allow us to “settle in” without immediately counting how many days we had left. And “settle in” we did. We began in Amsterdam after a four day jet jag adjustment in Amsterdam. Embarkation was efficient and welcoming, and the wine tasting on the Aquavit Terrace was a grand introduction. We were immediately impressed with our stateroom, and the overall condition and appearance of the Viking Longboat. Exceeding both were the professionalism and warmth of the ship’s staff. The variety of food and beverage selections ensured there was something for everyone. Service was outstanding, as was the quality of the meals, from breakfast through dinner. Shore excursions offered were varied and appropriate. Guides were uniformly outstanding, from personality and communication skills to their professional knowledge. It was hard to depart in Budapest. We wanted the cruise to never end. We came with very high expectations, and they were exceeded in all respects. Read Less

I highly recommend this trip. We are actually looking at doing it again but in the opposite direction. We were in the lowest level on the boat and the rooms were fantastic. Good sized closets, excellent shower, fridge, television and comfortable beds. Also very nice shower products (leave your toiletries at home) Viking is very organized from the time you embark to disembark. I would look on the television every morning to view the menus for the day so I could toss around what I was going to order as many days it was hard to chose and everything sounded so good. Chef Jan would come to the lounge every evening before dinner and give the chefs recommendations and explain how the food was prepared. Chef Jan also had a sense of humor. The lounge had music every happy hour and then again at 9:00 pm for dancing. they would change the themes nightly from Country and Western, Classical, and Rock and Roll etc. There was always something to do in the afternoons after our daily tour. There was an afternoon English tea one day and another the Chef demonstrated on how to make strudel. The waiters in the dining room and the lounge were excellent. They quickly learned your tastes to be able to recommend a wine. We purchased the Silver Spirits package in our own currency and it was well worth it. The shore excursions are well managed and there was never any line ups to wait in.We met lots of very nice people and we now have new friends. Another great thing about this trip is there are no children allowed. Viking is there to great you at the airport to take you to your hotel or boat and there at the end for your return home. My only complaint is that I gained weight due to the great food. Read Less

We had heard from our neighbors and friends about their fantastic experience with Viking River cruises and had been on our ever expanding bucket list for "to do" things. We finally did it in June of 2018. It was a 15 day Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It turns out that the cruise turned out to be better than our extremely high expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, service, and the worry free cruise. The crew was fantastic. It felt like we were with our loving and caring extended family. The included excursions were more than we would have asked for. It was convenient and educational having not to worry about what to do and what it is going to cost. The food was exceptional with compliments of wine and beer. We are taking another Viking Cruise on Dec 13 to Cuba & Panama, and one in May of next year. We love Viking Cruises; they meet and exceed our expectations. Read Less

We travelled on Viking 3 years ago and our friends have heard all the stories. 2 of them asked if we wanted to go again with them from Budapest to Amsterdam and there was no hesitation, we accepted. Our only problem was getting to Budapest, we were delayed leaving by 2 hours due to weather, and so missed our connection but we were rebooked on 2 new connections and arrived only 4 hours later than scheduled, though our luggage didn’t make it. No problem, the front desk was on it, I was on it from another angle and by morning we had our bags. The crew was fantastic. They got us robes, slippers, and toiletries as we didn’t know if/when the bags would show up. They also threw in free laundry while the bags were missing, though we didn’t need it in the end. Viking cabins are small, even the “larger” cabins, but that's OK because you are not in there except to sleep, change clothes, and shower. The lounge and sun deck are where most time is spent when on board and are more than adequate for the 190 or so guests on a full cruise. We had 178 on ours, which included a crew from Discovery Channel doing a show on our ship, to be aired in the fall. We were on the top deck of rooms and had a balcony, barely wide enough for a chair but still useable. We tried to sit at the same table every night or close by so that our wait staff could get to know us, and they did. Always friendly, efficient, and eager to get something for us. The food was very good and reasonable portions, though our chef tended to make dry cakes and other baked desserts. A fellow passenger mentioned it to him and he ignored her, blamed it on the recipes, yeah right. The bartenders in the lounge were also excellent. The waiters in the lounge were mixed. One lady and one guy were good but the others were hit or miss, frequently miss. Get to know your bartenders, you might find free wine/beer times with lunch and dinner get extended a bit and if you get them to join in late night dancing, they can be really fun and generous on your next pour of a drink at the bar. I usually don’t go for a lot of the entertainment, but it wasn’t bad and several local entertainers were brought on to give us local tastes in music or activities. There was a free walking tour included at every stop, which we found adequate. Our friends did some extra excursions that they enjoyed, but one of them was 4 hours each way on a bus so it was a long day for them whereas we relaxed after our walk and enjoyed the scenery and the quiet. We booked the trip a year in advance, and did get a more expensive room, but it was worth it. Breaking it down to a daily cost and remembering that our air fare was included, it wasn't that bad for a 2 week cruise that included excursions, food and some drinks, travel to each port, and hotel all on 1 ship. We each got a $100 voucher for another cruise, which turns into a $200 on board credit when we use it. No expiration date, transferable or refundable. You can’t go wrong. Also, nobody under 18 on board, so it's quieter than some cruises we have been on. My favorite? Cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine with all the castles, almost a new castle around every curve on the Rhine. DW Read Less

My partner was a "newbie" and not sure that he would like a cruise. So, our friends and I suggested a Viking River Cruise and it proved to be an excellent introduction to the cruising experience. The cruise itself is a premium experience. We sailed from Budapest to Amsterdam and everything conspired to make it a memorable trip, including the weather. The cities along the route were all interesting and the included excursions were well-passed and staffed by locals who knew their locations intimately. The ship was top-notch, with excellent dining choices and pleasant on-board entertainment. One highlight was the cruise through the Wachau Valley of the Rhine where, for 4.5 hours, we sailed past many river towns and hilltop fortresses and castles with a delightful intermittent commentary by the program director. My partner is now ready to try a sea cruise, though he still wants to stay close to land. So, we're considering a North Sea cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise from friends referrals and we corroborated their comments by taken the cruise. We are very happy with the experience and we also would recommend it to our friends and family. The excursions were very well guided and planned to perfection, on all the details and guides very well informed. Your on board crew members, were very good trained and that was reflected in their professionalism. The cabins are very comfortable and with plenty of space for comfort. Dining was excellent and the culinary aspects superb. Entertaining was very good and your PR lady well trained to conduct such job. We expect to sail in other cruise very soon and definitely will be on Viking Cruises. To finish the embarkation and disembarkation well planned and as a consequence very smooth. Again the crew members were outstanding. Before the cruise we explore the city of Amsterdam for two days and we were very much impressed with the buildings and and the environment in general. The staff was so personable. It was like being at a B&B. The service was second to none. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone . We liked it so much we already booked another river cruise next year for our 30th wedding anniversary. The thing we like most about this cruise was the size. It was nice and small. We weren’t a number. The staff always addressed us by name. We went on the Tulip and Windmills cruise. The gardens were stunning. We even had the opportunity to visit a home . That was wonderful. Excursions were great, added excursions even better. Thanks to our guides, not one disappointment. Our Cruise Director, David was amazing. He appeared everywhere, never needed to look for him, but there was never a reason to worry as everything was so well organized. Captain Marcel was very sociable. Always around to talk with. One day of grey weather out of 13 days, rather fortunate. Made cruise a delight. Lounge entertainment was great. Bar tenders were so good, always there to help out. Experienced a possible transfer by bus, but it didn't happen. We stayed on the same ship although water levels were low. Must of been magic. Thanks crew... The itineraries and destinations were all places that I wanted to see. One of the highlights is actually one of the more simple things though- the scenic cruising days that we would spend on the sun deck sailing past castle after castle in the warm sunshine. Everyone that worked on the ship was amazing and had my name memorized which was awesome. I miss them very much! Don't get me started on the food. I was so spoilt! It was often difficult to choose from the options on the menu because they all sounded good. We loved the complimentary coffee/hot chocolate and cookie station. We often helped ourselves to a nice hot chocolate and cookie then would go back to the room and watch episode after episode of Downton Abbey on the very nice flatscreen tv's. Nicer than the tv in my house! As was the heated floor in the bathroom. I might have enjoyed myself too much. Made a lot of friends. Unforgettable trip. Read Less

We are not into cruising but the concept of a river cruise where everyday you were in a different town with planned excursions appealed to me. I also did not have high expectations of the cruise itself thinking it would be like riding a Greyhound Bus because of all of Viking's advertising. The cruise blew me away. It was way beyond my expectations. Five stars are not enough to describe it. From the ship, to the crew, to meals, to the daily excursions..........all were well beyond first class. The ship was high tech and wonderfully appointed. The crew was genuine and sincere in it's treatment of all "explorers". The meals were five star, gourmet. The included and optional excursions had wonderful guides that provided a local perspective to the areas toured. I can not think of anyway to make the Viking Grand European Cruise any better. I would recommend Viking and the Grand European Cruise to all. It is worth every dollar it cost. Read Less

We moved into a community of active cruisers. Having never river cruised, they explained what we were missing, and the Viking Gefjon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam proved them right! From the welcoming at the airport, outstanding hotel for our pre-cruise stay, to the final sad moment of heading home, their attention to detail, and our happiness, never diminished. Our 3rd floor balcony cabin was cozy yet comfortable and any extra request was completed by Monika with a warm smile. After a day, staff greeted us by name and so began the feeling of extended family that spread to all on board. Having only 190 passengers made dining and excursion adventures delightful! The menu was exceptional, and we particularly enjoyed the local cuisine and wine pairing. Stephan, Stephan, and Lucia were always ready with tempting options from the bar! The staff, from captain, Sam delightful cruise director, to head chef (who took us to the local outdoor market) and all others, were the best coordinated cruise team we have experienced in our 34 years of cruising! We were quite impressed with the quality of the included excursions, giving you options for additional tours, or time to cruise the beautiful towns and meet the locals (and taste the great beers)! Truthfully, it will be quite hard to return to big ships! We will certainly be enjoying more Viking cruises. Thank you Viking Gefjon for making our first river cruise spectacular ❣️ Read Less

I can't say enough about our wonderful journey on this beautiful Viking longboat. The staff were absolutely amazing...every one of them warm, caring and always smiling. The organization of embarking, daily tours, special events, was impeccable. Often after an afternoon excursion, as we entered the ship there'd be waiters in the lobby to welcome us back with a cocktail and appetizer. Food was delicious...dinner was 5 star restaurant quality. Loved the included wine and beer. Entertainers from local towns were very good. Our onboard pianist was delightful. The included tours were great, with informative and fun guides. Loved the fact that there were only 180+ passengers so able to meet and chat with at least half of them. Many were "world travellers" and I didn't hear one complaint from anyone. There is even a "Gentle" walking tour group at every stop, for those who have limited abilities. We were shown special attention to make sure we both were taken care of. We both felt like royalty. When one of us got sick and stayed in the cabin through two dinner services, the staff of the restaurant made sure that he received a full hot meal, delivered by the restaurant Manager. We were totally impressed with the entire staff and crew. The shipboard entertainment was first-class, with shows by such professionals that I would compare them to highly paid stage performers. The food on the ship was outstanding. I cannot praise the chef and his team enough, especially after seeing the tight quarters that they have to prepare the meals. Truly a "Trip of a Lifetime"! Itinerary - it took us through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Our room was conformable, maybe a little smaller than the usual hotel room, but everything we needed was there, including bath supplies. We had a room with a veranda which allowed us to sit and watch the scenery as we sailed. The room was cleaned and freshened two or three times a day. In fact the whole ship was always being cleaned and kept in pristine condition. There were only 150 passengers which made for an intimate trip. The guests were mostly polite, congenial, not "party animals" making for an enjoyable atmosphere aboard ship. The food was excellent - many selections at all meals, with snacks always available (although we didn't need any extra foods) and the staff were the best I have encountered - well trained, polite, attentive to our every needs. The walking tours of the cities we visited allowed us to discover culture and history. The tours were relaxed. My husband surprised me with this cruise to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. A Rhine River/Danube River cruise was at the top of my wish list, but I never dreamed that this would become a reality. The whole experience was magical for me. I didn't want to sleep. I didn't want to miss out on what surprise might be around the next bend in the river. I wanted to soak in every moment, often sitting on our veranda watching the ripples on the river in the moonlight, as our ship silently made its way to the next port-of-call. The shore excursions were well organized with friendly guides who gave us complete history lessons about the town we were visiting and its surrounds. Every guide spoke beautiful English with a sense of humor, even though English was not their first language. All staff were courteous and friendly and it wasn't too long before they were calling us by name. We were always greeted with a smile. The food and service was 5 star. The evening entertainment, be it an instrumental concert, an operatic performance, quiz games and fun team nights, or relaxing to beautiful easy-listening piano music, was enjoyable and filled with laughter. I sometimes sat on the Aquavit Terrace at the end of a very full day, and listened to the piano, the cool breeze softly muting the notes. I loved retreating to our cabin of an evening, getting hot cups of tea from the service area on our way, and enjoying the view of the river from the veranda together. I can't wait another 30 years before I "sail" again. It won't be long. Read Less

SO.......2 First Cousins and their spouses and my wife and I talked about doing this together and we even had 3 meetings to discuss this Grand European River Boat Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in the summer of 2015. Well on June 2nd, 2016, this "DREAM" became a REALITY for ALL of us. Talk about having a FANTASTIC Time on the Viking Gefjon would be difficult to put into words other than JUST DO IT!!! IF you want to be PAMPERED, then Viking will MEET your expectations for sure with Service, FOOD and Excursions!! The Food was 5 Star.....the Wine and Beer with Lunch and Dinner was Great too! The deserts.......well I GAINED 9 lbs on this trip so READ between the lines!! ALL the ports and tours were very interesting and informative also. We had a cabin that the widow slid open, but no balcony which was fine as we really weren't in the cabin that often. There are so many COMFORTABLE places to relax on this ship that this really wasn't an issue. We have always had a Balcony or better on all our Ocean cruises, but this was OK. All I can say is that this River Cruise really SPOILED US as now we probably won't want to go on the Ocean again...LOL!! PS: I did book a 7 night Caribbean Cruise for this coming November. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had heard good reports about Viking, and we also liked the length and destinations of this cruise. We had been to several of the stops along the way before, but we wanted to return to see them again. The cruise exceeded all that we had heard. The service, the staff, the food, the itinerary, and every other detail were absolutely perfect. When river conditions (high water) altered our normal itinerary, Viking handled the logistics seamlessly so that we did not miss anything and they did it without any inconvenience to us. For those who are not sure about a cruise, I would say several things. First, the ride was smooth as glass - no worries about seasickness. Second, it was wonderful to see so much while only unpacking once, unlike bus/train tours between hotels with multiple packing/unpacking episodes. Third, we really enjoyed getting to know other people on the ship - it was small enough that you could really do this. Fourth, the ship was very comfortable and virtually noiseless. I would DEFINITELY book with Viking again. Read Less

Went on the new Viking Gefjon on the Danube Waltz. Loved the locations where we stopped, loved the bus tours around the cities, loved just sitting on the deck when the younger travelers went on other explorations, food was excellent, love the free wine or beer at lunch and dinner, personnel from tour guide to cabin attendant were above expectation. It was my fourth Viking Cruise and already looking for another seasonal special. Enjoyed having an elevator to help go up and down steps. Very comfortable in all areas from the reception area to the lounge. Would like to have the lounge camera show the entertainment instead of just the piano and when the tour guide showed slides would like to have seen them on our TV instead of just hearing her talk. Other cruises had a wider view of the lounge area and we could see the entertainment from the comfort of our room especially late in the evening when old people like us like to relax. Loved the optional excursions from the ship especially when lots of us have traveled with Viking before and have seen many of the locations we stop at. But always something new to see. The captain was very visible and was at many of the occasions and always welcomed people to see his control tower and had answers to all of our questions. This was a wonderful cruise - something you will never forget. The rooms are great, good food and love that you get free drinks with lunch and dinner. Met some wonderful friends and the crew was friendly and polite. There were a few waiters that were not up to Viking standards but most were wonderful. Carl, our cruise director, was quite funny and excellent with his info. We really did not get into the entertainment because we were pretty tired every night. The excursions keep you busy and we saw so much. Passau was our favorite port. We did have to change ships due to low water but it was not an issue and they more than made up for it by giving us all a free lunch in another town. Quite a treat!! We have to say that the staff on Viking Ve seemed to be better all around than the Gefjon we transferred to. First time we had cruised on a smaller ship and they have spoiled us for sure. So easy getting on (we had done a three day pre visit to Prague) and the bus ride was very comfortable -when we got to the ship there was no waiting - no rushing. We cruised from Budapest (beautiful city) to Amsterdam. Cruised out of Budapest at night - stunning!! The ship was always being cleaned and every time you went on an excursion they would give you some water to take along. The stewards were awesome and always had our room spotless. Everything was great!! Viking definitely has it together in river cruising. Really didn't need a balcony since was pretty cold most of the time. We would love to do it again. Read Less

The Gefjon was only 70 days in commission at the start of our trip - but you would have never known it by the way everything happened on time, cheerfully and with every detail taken care of in advance. Everyone ends up with several people in the crew that they seem to enjoy being with and we had several crew members that made the trip even more special - I especially remember Georgi, one of our waiters, who did a really great job taking care of us. I don't remember all the names, but we have some great pictures which will help the memories remain fresh. The dining room, terrace and bar were just excellent, and the omlet man, who's name I cannot remember, did a wonderful job there and on the grill out front. The young bartenderess was sweet and mixed us many a great drink. If you go on one of the "long ships" you are in for a treat! And do get a cabin with the veranda so you can spend some time just watching live along the river take place, mile after mile, never fast, but always changing right before your eyes. My wife considered that time one of her favorite memories of the trip. And part of the price of the trip were all the excursions that were set up for us. One every day and never too long or hard or boring, ever. And we always made it back in time to eat another wonderful meal! The food was varied, ethnic and well prepared. My only complaint is that we were offered bread pudding only once! And I guess that is really a good thing since I can't resist and it was great and I would not have fit into anything to go home in after 15 days! Both our arrival in Budapest, with it's trip to the boat and our trip to the airport in Amsterdam was handled with cheerfulness and efficiency. Thanks to all those fine folks! All in all this was a great cruise and when I asked I tell folks that it is as good as the TV ads make it seem to be -- ONLY BETTER! Read Less
